my old How to Train your Dragon obsession suddenly re-emerging now, after I've spent years learning about Historical Viking Clothing and Crafts is great actually cause I get to apply the Fun History Knowledge to my favorite blorbos, and now I have some very specific scenarios.

in Viking culture, gift giving was a big complicated very significant thing. And one gift that was Especially Significant was that of a New Shirt. Women would propose to the guy they wanted to marry by making him a brand new linen shirt. I could go on for several pages about what that tells us about viking culture, gender roles, and also the extremely fun ways viking age stories used "gifting a shirt" as a symbol in romantic stories, but I'll restrain myself. This post is about How to Train your Dragon.

Astrid Hofferson can't sew. There's no way. Girl spent her whole life training to be a warrior, she has not had the time or patience to sit down and learn to sew (even though it involves a whole lot of stabbing things with a sharp object). I mean even her own clothes are made with minimal amounts of sewing (a needlebound tank top and some furs wrapped around her arms instead of sleeves).

Hiccup Haddock Horrendus III, on the other hand, knows how to sew. Sure he mostly works with metal and leather, but leatherwork requires sewing. I'm pretty sure I can find actual footage of him using a needle. Also his clothes are nicely sewn, and since he grew up without a mum, and his dad is a very busy man, he must have made at least parts of his outfit himself.

So my question is: how did they ever get engaged. How did that proposal go? Did Astrid suffer through learning a new skill so she could spend months of her life painstakingly stitching together the Worst Shirt Ever Made? I imagine her rage quitting after she has to undo that one seam for a fourth time, and in true Astrid fashion, just chucking it at Hiccup with full force when he walks into the room.

or! would Hiccup defy Viking Gender Norms because he gets that Astrid has no interest in sewing? and then he gets it into his head that it has to be the most elaborate shirt on the whole island cause it's for his girlfriend and he can't even remember ever seeing her in a nice shirt before? and that's a shame cause she deserves to have nice things! And he overthinks every choice along the way because what if she hates it???? But ofc it turns out really nice and she adores it.

Some Arcane characters and their fragrance types/notes

because one of my main interests is fragrance and I saw people doing this over on tiktok. not indicative of how I feel about any of them and certainly not legit character reads, just a silly post for my own brain worms lol. long post

featuring, in order: Mel Medarda, Jayce Talis, Sky Young, Viktor, Vi, Caitlyn Kiramman, Lest, Salo, Sevika, and Steb

Mel Medarda’s whole vibe is very considered, and there’s no reason this wouldn’t extend to her perfume choices, imo. She’s prepared for every situation. Specifically, she would love a fairly neutral, lightly floral fragrance for work. Not overcomplicated, think waterlily and sandalwood. At home, no one will ever be able to tell me she isn’t THE warm vanilla girl. Overpowering 8 step warm vanilla shower routine. After her mage realisation, I think she would lean into some more spicy, citrusy scents. Verbena and pepper.

Jayce Talis. Look. I see people’s Dior Sauvage headcanons, and I hear them. I see you. However, I have to disagree on the specific choice as a matter of my own sanity. Dior sauvage when i find you. I do think he’s a spicy, herby fragrance wearer though! Sage, basil, rosemary, and cardamom. A really fresh edge. For sure has an ‘ol reliable’ that he’s repurchased 5 times and doesn’t even think when applying any more. People gift him new ones but he forgets to wear them.

Sky Young would love something very chill and low-key, clearly identifiable and not too many notes. Approachable and friendly but with personality. Coconut & sea salt, fresh linen & white florals, and cashmere & almond are some go-to combos.

Viktor is not an everyday fragrance wearer by any means, but maybe puts something on when he isn’t just in the lab. Partial to a paper note, and likes the subtle; the kind of thing you have to be very close to pick up. If he was more interested, he’d be into weird niche stuff, but alas. Green tea, fennel. Smells like straight ozone in s2.

Vi is still working out what she likes. She only wears something when she needs a bit of a confidence boost. She wears warm, comforting smells: spicy and musky. Cinnamony, peppery, a little green. She likes things that indirectly remind her of the outdoors. She has one ultra sweet sugary thing, which she doesn’t wear, but reminds her of her sister.

Caitlyn Kiramman, through s1, would be a powdery lavender wearer. Maybe with some sort of sweet, creamy note too, like white rabbit sweets. It was probably gifted by her parents. In s2, she goes darker and smokier. Deep amber and a little woody, occasionally an oud. She wears less perfume in s2 as well.

Lest would wear something edgy and sweet and intoxicating. Vanilla rum, cut with tobacco, lemon, and a woody note that smells like a bar. On anyone else, this would be completely too much, but she pulls it off with ease.

Salo is pink peppercorn galore, bright yet serious. Certified bergamot warrior. Cashmere base note. He thinks he’s the shit for this but he smells like a rich aunt. Still kind of serving though, actually. He has like 7 fragrances and they all smell identical.

Sevika. Oh my god. She smells so good and no one will convince me otherwise. She smells like Glass Animals’ Zaba album. Really heady, like incense and boozy cherry and orchid. Dark and intense, but with a little lemongrass brightness to back it up. A little sugar too, when you least expect it. Head turner for sure and she loves it. Will not tell anyone what it is.

Steb wears herby, but in an interesting way. Tarragon and dill, really fresh but almost medicinal at first. Cloves and star anise. There’s a twang of samphire too, green and a little salty. Bitter and almost intimidating. Kind of undefinable. Very identifiable.

JOAN OF ARC + SAM WINCHESTER: POSTMODERN MARTYRS

This is incredibly self-indulgent, but there's an interesting comparison to be made here I think, between Joan as a cultural symbol and Sam as a variant on her. like her - his character also consists of ambiguities. He is both hero and monster/witch, saviour and pariah, transgressive while still fitting into the traditional mold of heroism. And because of their ambiguities, they're also both outsiders.

Joan is isolated because of her steadfast faith, and she's punished for it. She saves France as a young girl in men's clothes, hearing the voices of angels, and gets put on trial as a heretic by the very same Church that would later burn her at the stake. The very same institution to later saint her. Only in death does she get to become a holy martyr, no longer ambiguous. She is the hero with a thousand faces; Catholic saint, patriotic icon, queer symbol.

Unlike Joan, however, Sam's narrative is a horror story on failed martyrdom. He is the saint who never gets to die. His sacrifices never end in closure, not really. he's either stopped at the last moment, or retrieved from the depths of hell. He's denied the certainty that comes with dying, the nobility that comes with becoming immortalised as a memory. His faults are laid out on the altar, time and again, but he's not granted the crowning reprieve that death would afford him.

He holds onto hope and belief in others, clings onto faith in a higher power, whether that power be God or his family - his brother. He keeps faith in others in order to keep faith in himself. And he's let down over and over by that faith. His brother betrays him like a man; his visions come from a demon, the voice of God is really Lucifer in his ear. His own story turns on him like a pillory, trapping him before a jeering audience, unsympathetic to his suffering.

Sam, the heart of it all, more scapegoat than sacrificial lamb. In the end he only gets to exit the story by choosing to trust himself, and live.
