I don’t know if you’ll find this, in fact I doubt you ever will. In some ways, I hope you don’t. But this is my message in a bottle.

I know you left social media for your mental health, and I understand that. I understand that you needed to get away from all this, that it was hurting you. I also understand that it was so bad that you couldn’t even tell me, couldn’t even say goodbye.

I understand all of it.

Even so, I miss you.

Almost a year ago, I reached out into the void, just to know you were alive. A mutual friend helped me look around, she assured me you were okay. She gave you a message from me. I just wanted to know you were alright, and to let you know that you could reach out any way you wanted to, any time at all. That was enough, knowing you were okay.

But it’s been 21 months since I heard from you. Not a messenger, not someone I have to just trust is telling me the truth and not what I want to hear, but you. And it’s you I miss talking to.

It didn’t matter to me that we met online. It didn’t matter that we’ve always had the entire Pacific Ocean between us. It didn’t matter because we had this invisible string to connect us together. I knew you needed to log off now and then, sometimes weeks or even a couple months at a time. It was okay, because you always came back, even just for a second, just to let me know you were okay.

But after all this time, I guess I have to accept that the string is broken. The mutual friend has gone too. They all have. There’s no trace of you left anymore. I gave you ways to contact me, but you haven’t. If you’re still alive, you’ve moved on. You mustn’t worry about me like I did about you. I’m probably just a memory in your new life, if I even mattered that much at all.

But if you’re reading this, don’t pity me. Don’t suddenly decide to re-tie the string just because you think I’m miserable without you. I’m not. I’m doing pretty well, and life goes on. That doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to miss you. Hell, if I thought it would work or that you would care, I’d write this in a letter and address it to the entire state of Arizona, just on the off-chance that it would find you. But I have more sense than that.

I guess you’re my heartworm. You’re that person that still matters to me, the unfinished friendship. I can’t pretend not to still care about you. I loved you, I missed you, I hoped for you, and then I mourned the loss of you. Of us. Because for me, there was an us. You were someone I could share everything with, someone I looked forward to hearing from. You were my friend, and I hate to think of you as something else. I can recall your face, and I still have love for you. What I can’t recall is whether you would get that folklore reference, but that’s what we’ve come to. All I have left of you is backlogged messages from dead accounts, and your name. All the proof in the world that you ever existed.

How do I end this letter then?

I suppose in the same way I left my last message to you. I’m here for you, if you ever think of me. I’m not still at the restaurant, sitting in a corner I haunt, cross-legged in the dim light, though I am sitting in a very low-lit room with my legs crossed just cause I feel like it. I would love if you got that evermore reference, but if you didn’t, the point is that I’m not waiting for you. My life is full and happy, with or without you. But with you would be nicer.

And if you really are gone forever, if there’s no one left alive to ever find this message, then at least I said it.

Im here for your opinions on roundworms and parasites.

THANK YOU! Your enabling is always appreciated (and I think I have a pokemon ask from you that I lost in my drafts like six months ago????? I'll go find that later!) Here are some of my parasite opinions. Under the read-more because, re: last post's tags, this is not what most of you guys signed up for 😭

My main opinion- worms are, by far, the most interesting type of parasite, even amongst other endoparasites. Exoparasites are largely boring. Sorry to any tick or leech enthusiasts out there. Amoebas (and other protozoan parasites) are just okay. They were more interesting in season 2 of House MD than they are in real life, imo.

Guinea worms (draculculiasis) are maybe the most disgusting type of endoparasite, but thankfully they're incredibly rare. I'll keep it not-revolting but the removal process is disgusting, and not much gets to me but that does. When I was in vetmed classes back in like 2018-2020, I was the person who wanted front-row seats to literally everything, and despite that, guinea worms make me viscerally uncomfortable... but very fascinated. Heartworms are pretty high up there, too, and roundworms do get an honorary mention.

Not really an opinion but I need to know what kind of worm RFK JR has. I have been so darkly fascinated by this for months on end. It's PROBABLY neurocysticercosis, but what if it's something more interesting???? I have never wanted to see the full medical work-up of a politician more badly. I periodically check to see if there's any updates in the brainworm department. ALSO, it didn't actually eat his brain. I'm not a parasitologist but I'm like 95% sure that any worms that would have a presence in the brain would not actively feed on any organic tissue in that sense. It's probably a cyst caused by a calcified tapeworm larvae that damaged surrounding brain tissue. There was probably no actual ingestion of brain tissue despite claims and headlines. BUT IF THERE WAS, I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT IT. But nobody has a concrete answer.

If we want to talk about non-human parasites, then horsehair worms are a fun starting point! They infect insects and cause the insect to seek out water and drown themselves, and then the worm escapes in the water as part of the worm's life cycle. If you've got a strong stomach, go look it up on youtube. It's vile but SO interesting. The Green-banded broodsac is also a lovely little freak. It invades snail's eye stalks and pulses bright, strange colors to attract birds. The bird eats the snail (and the worm) and the worm uses the bird's droppings to scatter its eggs. It's some real freak of nature type shit and I love it.

Also not really an opinion, but I learned very quickly as a child that telling the other kids fun worm facts is not a great way to make friends, but on tumblr it works just fine!

Whelp, my dumbest, oldest doggo finally crossed the bridge today. We had to have someone come to the house to help her along because she was too dumb [affectionately] to do it herself. Then we drove her to my parents' and put her in the ground in our pet cemetery at the end of a line of Very Good Doggos™, tucked her in sound, and let the earth reclaim her. It is sad, but it is good. I knew that Good Days were a thing of the past. She was just about to turn 20, mostly deaf and blind, unable to get up on her own, prone to leakage, and her body was just twisted and tired.

We rescued her from a family who had just tied her up outside and hardly paid attention to her. She was 12 and came to us skin and bone, with heartworm, tapeworm, and broken teeth. We got her healed up and offered her a few good golden years. She said yes thanks I think I will and took 8. This last one has been pawspice care.

In her 8 years with us, she was neurotic and silly and endearing and maddening and stinky and disgusting and hilarious and had very soft ears. She always seemed like a house guest that couldn't take a hint; I never fell all the way in love with her, but she was sweet and dumb and liked by all.

We gave her a good life and a good end. Lucky little shit. <3

Over the last day or so me and my friend have made these patches for the battle jacket I’m working on! :))

I might do another layer of paint on some of them but I’m pretty proud of how they turned out. (The star in the circle is the logo for Heartworms.)

I’m planning to make a Bauhaus and Batnoveau patch along with some other miscellaneous ones but for now I’m going to add some spikes to the shoulders of my jacket :)

yay tuesday is back

return of tuesday! i had two weeks in the UK which was very fun but i am definitely vacationed out - i miss my routine. longer trips like that are only fun towards the end if you have a home base that isn't just a hotel room.

listening: newest coral bones ep is very chill. it's only three songs and they're all very vibey but i think my favorite is 'seatac'. i wish they were still posting on bandcamp. alas.

finally, i saw st. vincent live in london this past weekend!!! it was a really good concert, lots of fun, interesting venue. she's definitely got an insane stage presence. the opening act (heartworms) was fun too, my brother and his friend weren't interested and described it as 'moody goth bullshit' and i was like well. that is right up my alley. you boys enjoy the bar im gonna go be moody and goth. it was good!

i think if i do standing room tickets again i need to invest in some platform shoes, at least two or three inches, because some of that was a struggle to see Anything ... i did manage to find a spot where i had a decent little corridor between heads to see the stage, however i was directly behind a guy in a bowler (?? fedora?? idfk) hat and his boyfriend who kept moving around and dancing (fine) and gyrating (also fine ?? i do not consider st. vincent particularly gyrate-able music but what do i know) so i also had to do some leaning side-to-side to see around them. one of her songs has a line about jumping off the london bridge and the way they both looked at each other and pointed gleefully at themselves while going "meeee" was very funny. i bet they're on tumblr, they had the vibes. hello gay guys at the london st. vincent concert, if you're reading this.

reading: i read 'when the angels left the old country' by sacha lamb in the two days that i was alone in edinburgh before my brother came! it was good, speedy read, i enjoyed the characters and overall conceit well enough. probably not on the to-buy list, i'd just rented an ebook for my trip.

making: i did a lot of sketching on my trip! i made a watercolor travel journal that somehow doesn't have enough pages so i'll have to rebind it but oh well. no watercolor pics for now but i'm excited to share those as i go! in the meantime, some sketches i did in the east princes street gardent, the scottish parliament, and the victoria and albert museum in london respectively:

eating: ough i ate a lot of good food in the uk. mostly the non-british food unsurprisingly but i Did have some really good fish & chips moments. last meal of the trip especially we got a recommendation from one of my brother's friends who goes to cambridge and ouuuugh that shit was So good.

misc: it's good to be back ... now i'm back in The Grind (work) but i don't mind it. despite the jetlag i'm feeling refocused and excited to get moving on stuff again. i liked a lot of stuff about the uk (trains, vibes) but i also did not like some stuff (why are the cold meds So weak there lmfao) and overall i'm glad to e home :)

In Baltimore County, MD: Baltimore County Animal Services currently has 101 dogs in our system-this is a nightmare and not a Disney movie as we have 77 kennels and some dogs in foster, but we continue to get dogs in and struggle to find placement for them. We desperately need fosters, adopters, and rescue help! Any help is appreciated to help give us room for the continuing dogs that come in. Adopters are welcome to visit us Tuesdays-Sundays 12pm-5pm. I have no money. I just paid rent and my graduation fee, my service dog needs a root canal, both dogs need flea/ tick/ heartworm meds, it's all so much. I have three jobs. My mom's coworker, a 45-ish year old man, just had to move back in with his mom because his job doesn't pay enough. I know multiple peers who can't afford to even live with roommates. One of our family friends had his rent go up $500 between leases, all at once. My mom's ex-boyfriend has a 1 bed 1 bath duplex that's falling apart, has no fridge, no washer/ dryer, and has vandalism issues; he currently works 40 hours a week and is searching for a second job to afford his home.

This is a mess! It's not just affecting millennials and gen z, either. How can the older generations say we don't work hard enough? Fuck this.

I was gonna make a post last night about my dog Kozzi and her day at the vet and their findings. I didn't have time.

I was up most of the night doing homework and she was up with me. Until about 5:50. That's when I found her laying on my bedroom floor not breathing. She was gone.

My best friend of 12 years is gone.

They diagnosed her yesterday with a heart murmur and congestive heart failure. They gave me 2 meds to give her every day and we made arrangements for us to come back in for heartworm testing. 14 hours later, she's gone.

What am I gonna do with myself? How am I going to cope with this, my baby not being here and me not having a dog for the first time in.... I don't even know how long. I've loved her and spoiled her and shared my secrets with her and encouraged her love of hot dogs for 12 whole years. It's not fair that dogs can't live forever, not even when we love them with everything we have..

Rest in peace Kozzi. I hope you've found somewhere with lots of sunshine for sunbathing, endless amounts of hot dogs, and warm blankets to burrow in. Until I'm by your side again. ❤️😭💕😢
