“A part of the idea of the title Romance was to kind of play it or nuance it off the grotesqueness of the sound in a lot of the record. The excess and the machinery. The industrial nature of it. I feel like the artwork really captures that because to me the heart looks very metallic and simulates feeling. Simulates emotion.” - Grian Chatten

I think one of the great problems that faces people who are in the industry – within which they have to express themselves – is learning to ignore entirely anyone else’s opinion, especially complimentary opinions because the luxury with being assaulted is that you know instinctively that you’re not to take that onboard because that would affect – in a negative way – what you’re doing. But the same thing could be said for compliments, but they come in sheep's clothing. They invite you to give your sense of self-esteem to someone else because as soon as you start relying upon compliments, then you are giving away your own... I can’t think of the word, but you should be the crux of your own opinion. –Grian Chatten from Fontaines D.C. on Live with KEXP [x]

i smell like smoke from electrical fires — a year-end, happy-birthday-to-me mix.
I used to always make a mix tape or mix CD or playlist for the end of the year/my birthday. The mixes were always a combination of songs I listened to a lot that year, songs that summed up my year in some way, and then a few that I just felt like hearing at the time I was making the mix. I started doing it at around age 12, and continued the tradition until I was about 35. But that was the year 8tracks died for a while, and at the time I didn't have a way to make tapes, and also that was the year I started using Spotify, so I kinda just depended on Spotify wrapped to sum up my music-listening habits for the year. Well, since I no longer use Spotify, and since I do have a way to make tapes, I decided to get back into the habit.
As per usual, I made a YouTube version as well, in case anyone else wants to give it a listen. If you listen to we'll burn it & we'll build it again (the mix I made in July) followed by this one, you'll get a pretty clear picture of what I was listening to a lot this year/what my year was like.
Side A
MX LONELY - Rest in Salt
Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
World/Inferno Friendship Society - Burn & Scar
Daycare Swindlers - Darkness
Dave Gahan - Mother of Earth
John Doe - Big Moon (3Sirens Session)
Jolie Holland - 2,000 Miles
Big Thief - Vampire Empire
Superchunk - Crossed Wires [this is the song from which the title originates]
Green Day - When I Come Around
Jawbreaker - Want
Bikini Kill - Capri Pants
Worriers - Pollen in the Air
Team Dresch - #1 Chance Pirate TV
Side B
Sinead O'Connor - Black Boys on Mopeds
Grian Chatten - Season for Pain
The Smiths - Cemetry Gates
Squirrel Flower - Alley Light
RUSTBELT - Young and Punk
Partial Traces - Silver & Green
The Shivvers - Reckless
The Replacements - Swingin Party (Ed Stasium Mix)
IDLES - Colossus
The Pogues - Rain Street
Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Ramshackle Day Parade
Operation Ivy - Sound System

"You can edit the structure and grammar and syntax of a sentence all day, and then realise that the feeling or the sentiment is gone - and you have to really close your eyes and dig deep and try and remember what it was because it's so specific. Language can be so limiting, and it can make you forget what the innate or original thought was. There's a really good quote by yates: 'a line may take years maybe but if it does not seem a moment's thought then all our stitching and unstitching has been naught.' You can edit to zone in, or you can edit to zone out - and it's difficult to know which one you're doing sometimes."

“I did a really weird thing where I went straight from Tokyo – where we finished the tour – to LA on my own without a real plan, or even a particular fondness for the city. I went because I associated LA with being purely on tour, and I was afraid of not being on the road; taking a step back from performing can be quite scary when it’s such a big part of your identity. I bought some equipment to record out there, and then I was on a call with a counsellor who specialises in speaking with touring artists. He advised me to take a break and stop writing. That’s quite a profound thing: to try and imagine yourself outside of what you do.” - Grian Chatten

I learned that you can make it to that kind of level and remain in tact as a human being. And I learned that Sheffield’s people are very similar to Irish people. We bumped into them at the same pub a fair few times. But I believe it goes beyond that.

Have I missed some beef between AM themselves or AM circle and Fontaines? There's so much AM haters who appear to be Fontaines fans recently in this blog, and for what...?
// It will never happen. Miles is quite low in his career. But she is under Grian Chatten from Fontaines radar. And he also is. Wait for collaboration soon. Told you, AM, Alex Turner and Miles are nothing compared to Fontaines now
very strange
