Ooh! A wonderful interview with Rich Keeble who played Mr. Arnold (the one with the Doctor Who Annual :)) in S2! :)ā¤
Q: In Good Omens 2 you play Mr. Arnold, who runs the music shop on Whickber Street. Were you a fan of Good Omens before joining the cast, and is it challenging to take on such an iconic story which is already loved by a huge fanbase?
A: ā€œThereā€™s always pressure if youā€™re working on something with an existing fanbase and people might have an idea already as to how you should be approaching something. To be honest I was aware of the show but I hadnā€™t actually seen it before I was asked to get involved. I knew it was something special though! I remember talking to Tim DownieĀ [Mr. Brown]Ā about how when you tape for certain things you know if somethingā€™s a ā€œgood oneā€. Of course by the time I was on set Iā€™d watched Season 1 and read the book.Ā
Tumblr media
I had an interesting route into the show actually: I was asked at the last minute to read the stage directions at the tableread on Zoom, and DouglasĀ [Mackinnon]Ā the director called me up to discuss pronunciations of the character names etc. To prepare further I quickly watched the first episode on Prime Video, and I was very quickly drawn into it. A couple of hours later I was on a Zoom call with DavidĀ [Tennant], MichaelĀ [Sheen]Ā (with his bleached hair), NeilĀ [Gaiman], Douglas and the whole team, including SuzanneĀ [Smith]Ā and GlendaĀ [Mariani]Ā in casting. After that readthrough I asked my agent to try and see if she could shoehorn me in and she came back with a tape for Mr. Arnold saying ā€œyou play the piano donā€™t youā€¦?ā€ They wanted me to demonstrate my musical playing ability, so I rented a rehearsal studio room in Brixton for an hour and filmed myself playing piano (and drums just in case), then I did my scenes a couple of different ways and I guess it wasnā€™t too terrible!ā€
Q: During episode five you mimed to music written by series composer David Arnold alongside a real string quartet ā€“ this must have been very immersive! How did it feel to work with David, and bring the ball to life?
A: ā€œI actually didnā€™t meet David Arnold sadly, but I did work with Catherine Grimes, the music supervisor who is lovely. David was at the London screening but I missed an opportunity to go and say hello to him which I kicked myself about.Ā
I remember before I was in Scotland there was a bit of uncertainty as to whether I would need to play anything for real or not, so I practised every day playing loads of Bach and other music I thought was era-appropriate just in case they asked me to do anything on the fly. So yes, it was very immersive as you say! They sent me three pieces of music to learn which I practised in my Edinburgh apartment on a portable folding keyboard thing I bought. They introduced me to the string quartet (John, Sarah, Alison and Stephanie) and I tried to hang out with them when I could. On the day we all had earpieces to mime to. I had to mime while listening out for a cue from NinaĀ [Sosanya]Ā from across the room, then deliver my dialogue and carry on playing, which was tricky! The quartet and I helped each other out actually: Douglas would say something like ā€œletā€™s go from a minute into the second piece of musicā€, Iā€™d look at the sheet music and whisper ā€œwhere the hell is that?ā€ and one of the quartet would say ā€œwe think thatā€™s bar 90ā€ or something. Hereā€™s a little bit of trivia: the shooting overran and the string quartet couldnā€™t make the last day, so they found some incredible lookalikes to replace them for the scene when we get lead out of the bookshop through all the demons, although I think they also kept them deliberately off camera.ā€Ā
Tumblr media
Q: What did you think of your music shop when you first saw the set? Did you have a favourite poster or prop?
A: ā€œI thought it was incredible! It couldā€™ve been an actual music shop with all the instruments hanging up with the ā€œArnoldā€™sā€ price tags on. The attention to detail was incredible, well IS incredible as I understand itā€™s all still there. Itā€™s hard to pick a favourite to be honest. I did a little video walkaround on my phone at the time so maybe Iā€™ll post that if I wonā€™t get in trouble. Interestingly the shop interior itself was elsewhere on the set to the shop entrance you see from the street. You walk out of Aziraphaleā€™s shop, over the road, through the door of the music shop andā€¦ thereā€™s nothing.ā€Ā
Q: Mr. Arnold is tempted into the ball by a Doctor Who Annual and is playing the theme in the music shop scene ā€“ are you a fan of Doctor Who in real life? And what was it like making those jokes and references in front of the Tenth Doctor David Tennant?
A: ā€œIā€™ve always dipped in and out of Doctor Who over the years since Sylvestor McCoy, who was doing it when I first became aware of it when I was growing up. Even if youā€™re not a fan itā€™s one of those shows you canā€™t really get away from, so doing that particular scene in front of David was really fun, and of course Douglas had directed Doctor Who as well. Apart from the amusing situation of two supposed Doctor Who fans talking about Doctor Who without realising theyā€™re in the company of a Doctor Who, I also seem to remember Michael being the one to suggest that he would deliver his ā€œdue to problems at the BBCā€ line directly to David.
Oh, and I think it was actually my idea to grab the annual off the harpsichord before joining the queue behind Crowley at the end of the ballroom scene (which weā€™d shot weeks earlier at this point). When we were blocking it out and rehearsing I knew I had to leave my position and get to the front for my ā€œsurrender the angleā€ line, and then later it just felt like I wouldnā€™t leave without the annual so I ran back through everyone to grab it. Nobody seemed to have a problem with me doing that so I just carried on doing it when we shot it! I do remember it being a fun set with Douglas and the team being very open to suggestions.ā€
Tumblr media
Q: How did you balance filming both Good Omens and BBC Ghosts at the same time?
A: ā€œLuckily both shows were a joy to work on, and everyone seems to know about both of them. We were shooting them in early 2022 and I also had a little part in an ITV drama called ā€˜Stonehouseā€™, starring Matthew Macfadyen. I usually never know when Iā€™m working next so to have three great TV jobs at once was very unusual. There was all this date juggling and I actually almost had to turn down Ghosts due to clashes. Luckily both shows had to move some dates so it worked out. But yes, I spent two weeks up in Scotland shooting all that Good Omens ballroom stuff, then I came back down to London to do Ghosts, knowing Iā€™d be back up to shoot my scenes in the music shop in a couple of weeks. Now, when I found out who was playing my wife in Ghosts I couldnā€™t believe it: Caroline Sheen ā€“ Michael Sheenā€™s cousin! She was amazing and that was another great set in general. I say ā€œsetā€, but itā€™s all filmed in that house which surprised me. Iā€™d worked with KiellĀ [Smith-Bynoe]Ā and JimĀ [Howick]Ā before, and CharlotteĀ [Ritchie]Ā was in the Good Omens radio play a few years ago and a big fan of the book. Charlotteā€™s very musical of course and we got talking about my folding keyboard I had for practising my Good Omens stuff, and she ended up setting it up in the house for us to have a play on!
Now, when weā€™d shot all our internal scenes there was this big storm forecast, and our external scenes were scheduled for the day of the storm, so that had to be moved into the next week. It meant I ended up shooting those scenes outside the house, then going straight back up to Scotland to shoot the Good Omens music shop scene the next day! When I mentioned to Michael Iā€™d just worked with Caroline he said ā€œooh sheā€™s in Ghosts is she!ā€ and revealed that sheā€™d texted him about me which was rather surreal. Then later after the Ghosts wrap party Kiell gave me a part in his Channel 4 Blap, so at the time I felt like I was killing it career wise, but the industry quietened a bit after that and my workload eased off over the year so I was in my overdraft by November.ā€
Q: What are your plans for the future ā€“ can we expect to see you in something else soon?
A: ā€œThis year, after a bit of a quiet start, I was very fortunate to work on a Disney+ show called Rivals which starsā€¦ David Tennant! I think Iā€™m allowed to say my character is called Brian, and I shot five episodes so that was another really amazing job, and great to work with David again (I told him he must be my good luck charm, although I hope heā€™s not sick of me). That should be out at some point in late 2024. Other than that Iā€™ve filmed a few other bits I presume will be out next year, one of which is called Truelove on Channel 4 which actually looks really good. That starts early January. Of course now Season 3 of Good Omens has been greenlit, I would love Neil and the gang to have me back on thatā€¦ but I can only keep my fingers crossed!ā€

Did you get another request? It's headcanons for Astarion, Gale, and Halsin react to his shy gn crush confessing to him before running away because they're scared of being rejected. Thanks!
Okay I DID get the original request, but accidentally published it when I meant to put it in my drafts, apologies! I'd like to thank the Down By The River Music Box Version for giving me the focus I needed to do this in one sitting! XD Also these three are my BOYS I LOVE THEM
Warnings: None! (besides fluff)
Notes: Ā My requests are currently open! My pinned post (found here) contains both a list of characters I write for, and a masterlist!Ā  Original character list - please request for these too!
Tumblr media
Astarion
Before you even start the conversation with him about liking him, Astarion knows what this is going to be about. He just knows - he's been through this enough times to recognise that look on your face.
It's an easy conclusion to come to - to him, it's a thought of... 'who doesn't like him?' He's hardly known someone that he couldn't tempt, one way or another.
As you approach him, his lips are already curling up into that familiar sultry smile of his. He knows exactly how he wants to play this: "Well, well... If it isn't my favourite travelling companion... What brings you to my tent, my dear?"
You feel your cheeks burn as soon as he opens his mouth, your gaze casting aside as the words hit your ears. He always seems to know how to take someone's breath away.
You blurt out your confession as fast as your lips can manage, nothing more than a mash of words, hardly understandable - but Astarion understands with ease. He's been through this a lot, he knows the dance all too well. Before he can let a chuckle leave his throat, you're gone, leaving naught but a cloud of dust in your wake.
Nevertheless, had you been within earshot of the elf, you would have heard a rather dry laugh from his lips. To have someone turn tail from him, it's new. Something about the situation speaks to him though - it shows that, even after he's seen two hundred years of nothing but shadows and debauchery, there's still innocence in the realms. And he sees that it lives on in you. It's almost... endearing to him. Almost. Unfortunately it takes a lot to make his undead heart stir, anymore.
Unlike most, Astarion doesn't chase after you - he doesn't even consider it. In his past, he's never been one to chase after someone who likes him, he's always a magnet for them. He stays comfortably in his tent, eagerly awaiting your return. He knows you will, no matter how shy you are, or how long it takes.
Such a sweet thing... I'm sure they'll come around to speaking more openly eventually. Astarion's thoughts echo all that he knows from his past - one way or another, those who are charmed by him come back; though, he must admit, he does quite like the idea of playing this little game with you, whether you realise you are playing or not.
Tumblr media
Gale
Gale doesn't really label your timid nature or actions as 'shyness', he sees it much more as an air or aura of mystique about you - which he absolutely loves. His scholarly instinct tells him to dive in, to explore all there is about you, and to uncover all of your mysteries. However, he knows you are your own person - if you wish to tell him any secrets you have, he's going to let you do so mostly at your own pace, only nudging or prompting once or twice.
When you approach him one evening, he's so over the moon to tell you about something he's recently figured out, relating to a problem you've been trying to solve outside of camp, that he doesn't initially notice the rather skittish demeanour you've adopted. He's so quick to launch into his little pre-planned speech that he hardly notices you talking to him, until you've already run halfway back to your own tent.
Gale just... Stands there, in stunned - almost offended - silence. Had he done something? Was it his recent discovery? Had he launched into it too quickly - given you too much information all at once? All these thoughts go through his head one after the other. He hadn't even caught what you had said, and that worried him the most: He had no clue whatsoever what you had said to him.
So it isn't long before he's practically marching towards your tent - determination in his eyes. He will find out what you had tried to tell him. He clears his throat to get your attention when he gets close enough, folding his arms over his chest in a rather defensive position. "I suppose you have a reason for running off like that whilst speaking to me?" He questions, quite tensely. As you begin to shakily explain your feelings for him, his arms drop to his sides again.
He's very pleasantly surprised to learn that the only reason you ran off mid-conversation was due to embarrassment, rather than anything that he had done. He would hardly have been able to live with himself if that particular question had gone unanswered. So, he settles himself down in front of you. "Alright.. How about we try this again... With you having my full attention this time?"
Tumblr media
Halsin
Halsin could tell by the look on your face that whatever you wanted to tell him, it was important. Of course, true to his nature, he wasn't about to force it out of you - he's much more content for you to take your time in telling him.
So, he just sits with you, in a peaceful silence, waiting for you to work up your courage to ask him. And when you finally do, Halsin can't say he's shocked by the words - it's not always easy to hide attraction or love from someone who's been alive for over three centuries. What does surprise him, however, is the fact that you're so quick to flee the encounter. Though, he finds it quite sweet that you, unlike him, still have embarassment hinging around socialising - particularly when it is centering around matters of the heart. He doesn't think any less of you for it, a skill like that takes years of practice, and he's had three hundred and fifty years to hone this skill of his.
Throughout all his life, and his many lovers, this kind of thing has happened to him only a handful of times, so it still catches him off-guard most of the time. Thankfully, he knows how to handle the situation.
He gives you some time to yourself, allowing you to collect your thoughts. He knows that if he tries to approach you too quickly, you may become more frazzled, spiral more in your mind. And that is the last thing he wants. If you two are to be with one another - which he hopes is the outcome of the situation - he wants you to have a clear head, and know what you want.
When he does decide it's the right time to go to you, the first thing he does, is ask if you are alright. "How are you faring, my heart?" He takes a chance with the nickname, and he can just about see with the way your head whips round to look at him that he's certainly caught your attention. "You seemed... Out of yourself, before. Perhaps you would like to discuss it?" He moves to sit with you then, and even as he kneels , he towers over most. "At your own pace, of course..." He offers you a smile. It's a kindhearted smile - one that you can tell is straight from his heart. You feel a little more comfortable, and though it is a slow conversation, you get there before dawn.

I've had to disconnect from my dash because of all the negativity; I honestly do not get why people are acting like a semblance of justice+a movie is the worst thing in the world?
I'm mourning for the full six-episode season we lost because ng couldn't pass the utmost basic sub-zero bar for not acting like scum and of course I wish amazon had kicked him out and then sprung for it anyway (and honestly, as long as you're blaming the right person, I think it's fine to feel upset? We deserved better, the cast and crew deserved, Terry deserved better, and this one guy ruins it for everyone because the bar was buried six feet deep beneath the ground and he still managed to go lower, and that does suck, and it is miserable and unfair, so take a moment if you need it šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø) but let's face it, we got off lucky. Arguably, considering this was a standalone novel from the nineties, that then got made, in one of the best book adaptations I've ever seen, into a limited standalone tv miniseries (and, again, emphasising the standalone here, so even if it all goes to hell in a handbasket, we'll still always have S1 and the book; people have been ignoring the Jurassic Park sequels for nearly three decades), and then got a surprise sequel, we were pretty lucky the whole way through.
And regarding the whole what if it's bad thing, I was always going to be worried: I was anxious long before this shit went down, and I was anxious before S2 and even S1, as well. It's not like we ever had any guarantee it was going to be good beforehand either, and at this point, knowing what we do now, I'm not at all sure I'd have trusted ng to write this anyways. So while, yeah sure, I'm maybe a little more anxious now, I trust Michael and David with these characters and I trust Rob and Rhianna with Terry's legacy and story and that they wouldn't have fought so hard for this ending unless they planned to keep fighting and thought they could pull it off. Isn't the problem with this kind of thing normally that what happnes is the creator who cares deeply about the work gets pulled in favour of someone out-of-touch who cares not a jot about the story and needs to leave their own grubby fingerprints all over it? More the other way around here, no?
Anyway, what I also wanted to say was that I really appreciated your 'think of it as the final two episodes of season two' (and all your takes on this situation so far, very level-headed and optimistic, thank you). I mean, you're right, and it's hardly wildly out-there for a series to finish on a feature-length special, and although the filler material in S2 and the compression of S3 maybe means it doesn't exactly resemble what the second book would have been, it was only ever meant to be two books. (Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed S2 and was very glad to get it, even though I am a book/S1 fan and also had the most fun in that time fandom pre/post/around the time of the S1 release, but why does it exist? Ego? You can't tell me you couldn't have fit the important parts of S2 into one season with the S3 plotline.)
Basically, I'm grieving the could-have-beens (imagine if he'd been exposed way earlier and the TP estate had had control of this whole production from the very start!) and I'm a little worried that that hurt'll stick around no matter how good S3 is - which I need to fix, because that's more power over my favourite show and what it means to me that I want to give anyone, let alone someone like that - but at the end of day, I do think it definitely can be done with what we have, and I'm choosing to be hopeful it'll be done well, because, well, why wouldn't I?
(I will say this hasn't been great for my faith in humanity, because I really want to believe not all men are shit and some of them are making it very difficult right now, but that's an entirely different problem and so far believing most people are mostly good has always prevailed in the end so. y'know. we'll get there. might reread discworld, that's always good for that.)
Sorry for venting all this at you! I just kinda felt the need to write it all down once to get it off my chest... have a snack on me? I'm partial to cherry tomatoes, green melon and mandarines at the moment (I stop eating salads in winter, which means I default to eating even more fruit) but I can also offer homemade baked goodies fresh from this morning? šŸ„§
Hi there. šŸ’• You are welcome to vent away & thank you for the delicious-sounding snacks and kind words. I'm glad my posts on the movie boosted your spirits about it. I agree with and can relate to almost everything that you said here so assume that anything that I don't address just has a 'yes, absolutely' nod happening. šŸ™‚ā€ā†•ļø
The one thing I want to touch on here is S2 and this idea of it being "filler" that you mentioned that I think might not be quite accurate. I think you (and anyone else who reads this) might feel more enthused about the idea of a good ending in 90 minutes after reading this so hopefully this'll be another way that I can help?
On why S2 is really the whole story and actually had a lot more going on in every way than S1...
Tumblr media
Ok, I'm going to explain something that drives writers like myself bonkers šŸ˜‚ and that is how some readers or viewers of fictional stories mix up plot and story.
Nothing grinds our gears than reading things like "filler" and "unnecessary subplots" because, while everyone is within their rights to have an opinion on written works, 95% of the time, the person who says phrases like this isn't talking about the quality of the work but of its very existence. They're saying "why did we have to read/watch this? it didn't connect to anything" and that's where they are very, very, very... argh, just tell them, Crowley...
Tumblr media
...thank you, dear. Right, so, why is it wrong?
Because what many people who don't write don't understand about subplots and more character-driven story arcs is that the writers sat down and decided to do that stuff for very, very specific story reasons. Readers and viewers mistake plot for story. Plot only exists in service of story and, so, all plots exist for a purpose in the story. They're all relevant. In fact, the stuff people usually label as "filler" in a story is really exactly where they should be looking to figure out what the story is saying. If you're big mad about all this time you spent with Maggie and Nina in S2, I'd say you might not still understand what S2 was about because you won't understand Aziraphale's story without understanding both Maggie and Nina's struggles in S2, for example.
A story is the whole, overall thing. It's the meanings, themes, and messages in the work. It's what's being said. It's the ideas being put forth by the piece. It's what it's about. It's different from plot, which is just the stuff the writers are making the characters do or not do in order to tell the story that they are looking to tell. Story is the art; plot is a tool used to make that art. Fiction writers can come at their story from almost anywhere to convey what it is that they are trying to say so there is meaning in the fact that they are choosing to tell their stories the way that they are telling them. They came up with these ideas for reasons.
When you dismiss stuff as filler, you're saying that it's lesser than more in-your-face and bigger plots (when, often, it's very much not), and you're telling a writer how they should have written their own story-- most of the time, without even fully seeing the ending of that story or giving any consideration to why it is that the writer wanted you to read or watch the stuff you're saying wasn't necessary. I'm not arguing that every story is perfect but you aren't getting anywhere near close to being able to evaluate a story if you're not willing to dive into what you were given and consider why it was that you were given those things and what they might mean.
Until the main question that you're asking about every single aspect of a story is "what is this saying?", you're not really fully engaging with a work. You won't get there by dismissing what the artists are telling you is important.
The secret sauce to interpreting fiction are subplots, actually. They exist to help highlight the themes of the main story, often in a slightly more direct way. If you want to understand Good Omens, starting with Ineffable Bureaucracy is actually one of the best ways to get at the core of the themes of the story. It's far from wasted time in the story.
There's actually a funny nod to the importance of subplots in 1941 when Aziraphale references Sophocles, the playwright who basically created the concept of the supporting character whose story mirrors and parallels the main character(s). The mention of Sophocles shows up in S2, the season that brings Gabriel more fully into his purpose as exactly that.
Tumblr media
The reason why S2's plot is centered around the honestly pretty easily solvable mystery as to what's happened to Gabriel is because Gabriel, from the get-go, has been the entire story distilled down.
If you follow nothing but Ineffable Bureaucracy in Good Omens, you're going to be closer to getting what it's about and where it's going and what its end game is than you are if you are dismissing it as wasted time when we only have few episodes left. If you haven't yet seen the secret wisdom in Jim-- not to mention understand that Jim and Gabriel are the same person-- then you're probably wigging out more about the movie.
You likely think that S2 was wasted on stuff like Gabriel, or Maggie and Nina's romance, when they should have been getting to Armageddon and The Second Coming already!
You haven't yet noticed that Armageddon has more than one meaning in the series.
It's not always the literal destruction of Earth but also a person's own life crisis. We are all worlds of our own and those worlds can be put at risk if we don't let others in and take care of ourselves and those around us.
When you realize this, you can start to see that S1 goes hard with a freight train of plot all over the place that is related to Armageddon in a more Biblical, apocalyptic sense while it establishes its universe for us but that, once we know how it all works, we can get something like S2... a time where we can step back and start using Armageddon in the more figurative way that the story is also presenting it.
We need to because the story isn't about Heaven or Hell-- it's about being a person. S2 is emphasizing the deeper aspects of the themes and rolling that out at a pace more in line with a person having a few days of inner crisis. When you see that Aziraphale's crisis is the point then you can see how S1 can be about The Four Horsepeople riding to the end of the world and S2 can show War (inner conflict), Pollution (mental health issues), and Famine (symptoms of the other two; lack of food and pleasure and connection; self-starvation and self-denial) as a mental health crisis.
The point is that if you're thinking these characters need to come together to overthrow Heaven and Hell and get to the South Downs Cottage and there's no time slajdflkfwjlkejlje!?!?, then you aren't realizing that not every revolution involves guns and bombs.
People all over the world can start a love train that's far more effective. You might think a subplot about The Hellhound and The Ginger Cat learning to play nice and that they have a fuckton in common and should maybe bury the hatchet and just become eternal bffs already is filler but Crowley and Gabriel aligning is set up for the end game. It's strength in numbers and finding peace and family. They can't overthrow Heaven/Hell without help and Gabriel is the Supreme Archangel. They literally will never have a South Downs Cottage ending without a plot that helped Crowley and Aziraphale see that Gabriel and Beez are on their side.
This is the revolution in Good Omens:
Tumblr media
It will take all the characters coming together to overthrow Heaven/Hell and set up something new for us to get a happy ending and we absolutely will. S2 is Gabriel-centric because Gabriel is the key to all of the characters getting a peaceful ending and because he's a split-directly-down-the-middle mirror of both Crowley and Aziraphale. In a season that is more about Aziraphale's inner Armageddon than about an external threat, Gabriel is vital to telling that story. The plot of S2 is every bit as important to the story as S1. I'd argue that it's even more important because takes the time to go at the themes in a slower, deeper way. It needs to because it's a story of a fall that sets up for a story in S3 of a recovery from one.
Good Omens is the absolute perfect combination of a show that is both very, very detail-oriented and full of depth while also being, secretly, an incredibly simple story. I do not mean simple in a negative way but in a chef's kiss sort of way. Simple in a tight and elegant sort of way. This is something that I think some people might not see when they're theorizing but it's something to keep in mind ahead of the movie. Not just because the movie is shorter-- this would have been relevant if we were having a longer S3, too.
Good Omens has a very engaged fan base that looks for the details, yes. *raises hand* I'm one of them lol. And there will be plenty to pour over in the movie, but... the big thing to keep in mind is that your theory needs to be something that is simple, that can be explained in under a handful of scenes, tops, and that is focused on where Aziraphale's story arc is going above anything and everything else.
If you're beginning with time loops and the birth of a new antichrist baby, I'm telling you from ages of experience reading and writing stories, you're going to be way off. If you are over here composing theories of the story that you are arguing are correct and this theory involves, idk... *makes something up* Crowley is really Elvis and Elvis is really The Bentley and when a rainbow hits Whickber Street at exactly 4 minutes into the new season, Satan will be revealed to really be Jesus, I think maybe you might be missing the point of the details that the show has given already. Like the plot, these details exist to reinforce the themes of the story. Story beats everything else-- it's what this is all about.
And what Good Omens is about? Is best summed up by Michael Sheen, in this single sentence that I really, really agree with and have paraphrased more than once in posts:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good Omens is about the business of living. It's about the human experience, which is the experience of being a person. Everything related to Heaven and Hell and good and evil and Armageddon and supernatural things is plot that only exists to highlight a story about the complexities of being a person.
The supernatural is human and the human is supernatural.
That is what Good Omens is about.
While Crowley and Aziraphale are built as two halves of a whole and are both main characters, Aziraphale is the main character from a technical, story perspective, because he is the character whose story arc is driving both the plot and story forward. He's heading for a happy ending with Crowley in the South Downs by the end of the film. If you're making theories, start with what kind of plot would truly get him there and still fit with all of the themes of the story.
This 'it's about being a person' business is why if you look at S2 as filler and not as a season that is exploring the continuing themes on a deeper level, you're still worried about things like there being no time in a movie to show the story of a new antichrist kid being born or how they're going to fit the whole Second Coming into the movie. You don't yet see that Aziraphale parallels Adam and that being an antichrist is basically just being a person and that Aziraphale is presently the antichrist in the story. There is no antichrist child yet to be born. They won't be cutting it because it's not the story.
Armageddon since S2 has been Aziraphale's own personal one and the story from the end of S2 on is now how, if all the other characters can't come together to help him, it could also trigger Armageddon of the S1, Earth-destroying kind. It's tying a more literal Armageddon into a more figurative one. Because this story is about being a person so Armageddon is just metaphorical for going through a mental health crisis and shutting people out.
This story's themes include that every person matters and we all have to let others in and look out for one another. That there's strength in numbers. That found family and adopted family is as much family as biological family-- often, even more so. That labelling and categorizing people is bullshit and you should always open the cover and read the first sentences of people and help people whose stories begin with the same letters find one another. That it might be surprising who has things in common. It's about all of Heaven and Hell versus all of humanity, in the sense that ideas of being a perfect angel or being seen as an evil demon are concepts felt by human beings that get in the way of peace and healthy, happy living, but that fighting them is a common, human struggle, regardless of from where you come.
If you are too focused on the religious plot being the center of the film, you haven't yet seen the meaning of why the end of S1 was an eleven year old kid saving the world by telling off the bio-dad that was never there for him. You might be one of the people who thought this a silly, anti-climatic ending to that story, and don't yet realize that this is the entire story in a nutshell.
Tumblr media
Adam can only reject Satan and keep the darkness at bay because he is surrounded-- here, literally-- by a family that supports him. He has good people for parents and was lucky enough to grow up with resources that all kids in this world should have. He has an absolutely terrific group of friends. He has this witch lady and her boyfriend and these two gay uncles that just showed up out of nowhere šŸ˜‚ and his human incarnate self has what it needs to make it through this crisis, in this moment, even if he'll probably have others throughout his life, just like all of us. He's not evil incarnate and he doesn't have to be perfect-- he's just a person.
Aziraphale tells Adam this but struggles to see himself in the same way. That's what S2 is about.
S2 is about that other kid who, like Adam, breaks the season down into a single line of dialogue, David Tennant's apparent favorite from the season:
Tumblr media
Jemimah knows who she is and she is happy to claim ownership over her art and contributions to the world. She's living her life with excitement and enthusiasm in a way that gets more complicated as we become traumatized adults. Crowley and Aziraphale struggle with this. They have been making a life together on Earth for thousands of years and each struggle, in their own ways, to truly accept that they are people who are allowed to have a life because they struggle to accept that they are people, just like everyone else.
Their story is about getting to a better place with that. That's really all Good Omens fundamentally is. That's why their ending is going to be to go live in a little cottage together that isn't a business that covers up an angelic embassy that covers up a secret love den. It's just their house-- theirs together for the life they're going to live openly together.
If you want some peace with the film, I'd advise throwing over your theories about The Second Coming and Armageddon needing to happen and antichrist kids and how Jesus fits into everything. Jesus in Good Omens is Crowley romancing Aziraphale at the crucifixion and Aziraphale using what Jesus said to Crowley to reject temptation as invitation to fuck him. I thought Jesus in a single scene or less was the most likely thing for S3 and the same holds for the movie. It's not the story. The only time The Second Coming is mentioned in S2 is by the villain and, to get there, Earth would have to first be destroyed. It won't be.
If the story is about being a messy human walking the Earth and we're in the end game now, then the story is about Aziraphale and only Aziraphale. Everything-- everything-- will be in service of Aziraphale's story arc. We already had just a few episodes with S3 and we now have even less time but the way this is going is still the same. The story is Aziraphale's fall and the other characters coming together to challenge Heaven to keep Aziraphale from eternity in Hell. That's how Armageddon is stopped this time around-- overthrowing Heaven with Aziraphale's fate as the motivation to take on The Metatron. It's nothing to do with Jesus. It's everything to do with Aziraphale.
When you see that, you can see how feasible that is in 90 minutes, with plenty of time for things like 1941, Part 3 and other flashbacks.
I think, when all is said and done, you might wind up appreciating S2 more after the film but you can get there already if you start looking at it less as meaningless fluff and start asking why it is that we were shown this story, in this way, and what that can tell us about the story we're watching.

Maybe an isekai where the transported FeMC knows one of the characters has hypnosis powers (love rival? twist villain? Just The Villain?) and does everything she can to avoid him. That makes him suspicious, so he corners her and uses his powers & learns a lot more than he was expecting...
Anon you have reached into my soul with this prompt. I am SO excited to write this I canā€™t even EXPLAIN.
Whatā€™s worse than being hit by a truck and magically waking up inside of your favourite show?
Knowing all of the plot twists ahead of time.
She could never feel comfortable around her new magical friends! Whenever she looked at them all she saw was the plot:
Casey would lose the love of her life.
Danell would turn to the dark side to try and save her family.
Trevor would permanently lose all of his memories of their time together.
And Ryan?
ā€œSomething the matter?ā€ Ryan said, clocking in on her checked-out look.
Ryan was the villain.
ā€œOh. Sorry, I totally spaced. What did you say?ā€ she replied.
Who was she, you ask? The main character, of course.
The fact that she knew she was a main character was awful. I mean, the first thing she did was dye her naturally bright pink hair a nice earthy brown. And get blue contacts for her purple eyes.
It didnā€™t counteract the curse of a main character, though.
Love interests of every gender threw themselves at her feet. Mysteries and prophecies popped up every two days. She couldnā€™t even walk three steps without stumbling across a mystical artefact to help her and her friends save the world through the āœØpower of friendshipāœØ.
Yay.
So, as they sat around chatting she tried to pretend this group was as normal as possible.
But she couldnā€™t do that with Ryan.
Ryan had these powers, ways of controlling and manipulating the main cast. He rarely used them this early on in the series.
But that didnā€™t mean he wouldnā€™t.
She started out by avoiding him as much as possible. Putting her earbuds in as soon as he spoke. Switching classes (which she always sat in the back of, by the window).
He clocked on pretty quickly - which was annoying.
Then, when cornered about why she was acting so weirdly around him she claimed it was because she had some crush on him which only made him more suspicious and led to three episodes of her friends trying to force them together.
And now?
He was watching her. He knew something was up. He knew that she knew something she shouldnā€™t.
And she had run out of excuses to avoid him.
One by one her friends left to deal with some side plot that had cropped up, and before she could react she was sitting alone with him.
ā€œSo, penny for your thoughts?ā€ He started, pushing the emo black hair out of his eyes.
Total villain stereotype.
ā€œOh, nothing!ā€
Being the main character, her smooth, easy lie, came out jumbled and awkward. Just a by-product of being in the presence of a villain. Or maybe he was activating the part of his powers that made them slip up.
Either way he could read her like a book.
ā€œCome on, I donā€™t bite.ā€ He let some of his deep tone sink into the words and she felt her head go slightly fuzzy.
She jumped to attention at once to snap out of it.
ā€œOh! Wow! I uh, I forgot about the - thing! Gotta go do the thing, yep. See you later, Ryan!ā€ She tripped over air, steadying herself. She was still affected by whatever he had done to her.
ā€œā€¦did I do something?ā€ He asked, voice surprisingly small.
ā€œWhat? No! I told you. I have to go get the thing!ā€ She said, eyes darting away from his gaze.
ā€œReally?ā€ He said, something shifting in his facial expression. He began to raise his hand, and she instinctively shut her eyes to block them out.
He stopped. Looking between her and the glow of his fingertips.
ā€œOh.ā€
Sheā€™d played her card, hearing the curiosity and amusement in his voice.
ā€œHow long have you known?ā€ He asked, calmly. She stood firm, unyielding, eyes squeezed tight.
ā€œI donā€™t know what youā€™re talking about.ā€
ā€œIs that so?ā€ He laughed. ā€œThen why donā€™t you open your eyes?ā€
She felt the temptation, his magic at work, tugging at her. She wanted to open her eyes. No, he wanted her to feel that way.
Stay strong.
ā€œCome onā€¦ just a little peek?ā€ His hands glowed more, her face relaxing as his power sank into her. Sheā€™d feared this day for a while, but now she was living it her mind couldnā€™t find the will to fight back.
Her eyes opened low, and that was enough.
The glow filled her vision, her eyes wide and jaw slack.
ā€œThere you go. That wasnā€™t so hard, was it?ā€ He said, and if she could think sheā€™d have realised that was the exact quote he said during the grand revealā€¦
But she couldnā€™t think. She couldnā€™t begin to imagine resisting.
ā€œNow, why donā€™t you tell me how you knew about my powers hmmm?ā€ His glowing finger beconning her closer.
Her legs moved on their own.
ā€œWell?ā€
She froze, what little part of her was aware tried to fight it. But it was no use.
She spilled it all. How she ended up here. The plot of the show. Everyoneā€™s hidden subplots and character arcs.
By the end of it he simply sat and contemplated what she had told him for a moment.
He stared at the broken woman before him.
ā€œWell, I guess now is when things get interestingā€¦ā€

A Little Parlor Trick
Tumblr media
Characters: Crowley x reader
Summary: A first encounter with the King of Hell stirs a curiosity that you arenā€™t sure you will be able to shake.
Word Count: 1413 words
Prompt: ā€œAnd Iā€™ve got friends on the other side.ā€
A/N: This is for the lovely @caplanbuckybarnes Caplanā€™s Disney Celebration. Itā€™s been a hot minute since I wrote my favourite demon, but he is always worth the wait.
The dull hum of the Impalaā€™s engine faded as Dean turned the key, cutting off the familiar purr that had become background noise during the long drive to New Orleans. The air here felt differentā€”heavier, older, like it was thick with secrets. It clung to your skin, the humidity wrapping around you like a second layer of clothing as you stepped out onto the cracked pavement.
You glanced at the dilapidated house before you. It looked abandoned, but you knew better. A set-up like this was rarely what it seemed, and when dealing with demons, that was the one constant you could rely on.
Sam and Dean exchanged a look. Youā€™d been hunting with the Winchesters for a few months nowā€”long enough to be able to interpret some of their silent language, even if you didnā€™t quite speak it fluently. This was your first real test, your first hunt involving the King of Hell himself, Crowley. Youā€™d heard of him, of courseā€”every hunter worth their salt had. But hearing about him and meeting him were two different things.
"Stay close," Dean murmured, shooting you a quick glance. It wasnā€™t that they didnā€™t trust you; it was just that Crowley was unpredictable. Dangerous. And it was never wise to underestimate a demonā€”especially this one.
You nodded, falling into step behind them as they approached the door. It creaked open, revealing a dimly lit interior. It felt cooler inside, almost cold, and there was an unmistakable smell of incense and something darker, like old magic.
And then you saw him.
Crowley stood in the center of the room, wearing his trademark suit with a deep red silk pocket square tucked neatly in place. He looked like he belonged more in a posh London penthouse than in this rundown Louisiana shack. His dark eyes glinted as he watched the three of you enter, a smirk already playing on his lips.
ā€œWell, well, well. Look what the cat dragged in,ā€ he drawled, his gaze flickering to you with interest. ā€œAnd who might you be? New pet, boys?ā€
You squared your shoulders. ā€œIā€™m not a pet.ā€
Crowleyā€™s smirk widened as he let out a low chuckle, the sound rolling out smooth and lazy. ā€œOh, I like you already. A little fire in the belly. Just what I need.ā€
Dean cut in sharply, his tone gruff. ā€œEnough games, Crowley. You said weā€™d find what we need here. We need information.ā€
ā€œAh, yes. Straight to business as usual, Dean.ā€ Crowleyā€™s gaze lingered on you, his eyes twinkling with mischief. ā€œBut why rush when we can savor the moment?ā€
You held your ground, not wanting to show weakness in front of the demon. ā€œYouā€™re wasting our time. Are you going to help us or not?ā€
Crowley raised an eyebrow, amused. ā€œFeisty.ā€ He waved a hand casually, and the room seemed to shift, shadows growing longer, darker. ā€œAlright, kitten. If you want a little parlor trick, Iā€™ll oblige. After all, I do love putting on a show.ā€
With a snap of his fingers, the lights dimmed even further, and an array of candles flickered to life around the room, casting an eerie glow. You could feel a pulse of magic, something thick and tangible in the air, and it made your skin tingle.
Crowley took a step toward you, his gaze steady and unyielding. ā€œYou see, Iā€™ve got friends on the other side,ā€ he said, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, ā€œand theyā€™ve got quite the talent for giving people what they want.ā€
His words sent a shiver down your spine. There was something in the way he spoke, a kind of hypnotic cadence that made you lean in just a little closer, despite yourself. You knew you shouldnā€™t be intrigued, that you shouldnā€™t feel that pullā€”but it was there, undeniable and growing stronger with every syllable that fell from his lips.
ā€œDonā€™t listen to him,ā€ Sam warned, his voice cutting through the haze that seemed to have settled over your thoughts.
You blinked, shaking off the strange allure that Crowleyā€™s voice had carried. He noticed, of course, the shift in your stance, the way your expression hardened again. But instead of being annoyed, he looked even more entertained.
ā€œOh, come now,ā€ he said with a dismissive wave at Sam, ā€œIā€™m just having a little fun. Itā€™s not often I get such... charming company.ā€ He directed his smile back to you, a hint of darkness behind his otherwise friendly facade. ā€œYou know, itā€™s a pity youā€™re tangled up with these two. Youā€™ve got potential.ā€
You crossed your arms, keeping your expression skeptical. ā€œAnd what exactly does ā€˜potentialā€™ mean coming from the King of Hell?ā€
Crowley tilted his head, considering you for a moment. ā€œIt means youā€™re not like the others. Huntersā€”self-righteous, dull. Youā€™re different. I can see it in your eyes.ā€
ā€œLet me guess,ā€ you retorted. ā€œYouā€™ve got some grand offer that Iā€™d be a fool to refuse?ā€
ā€œWhy, yes,ā€ he replied smoothly, ā€œas a matter of fact, I do.ā€ He extended a hand toward you, palm up. ā€œYouā€™re a hunter. That much is clear. But you donā€™t know what itā€™s like to have real power. To command it, shape it, twist it to your will. I could show you.ā€
Dean stepped forward, placing himself between you and Crowley. ā€œEnough of your crap, Crowley,ā€ he growled. ā€œYouā€™re not turning anyone here into one of your lackeys.ā€
Crowleyā€™s expression barely faltered, but his eyes grew colder, a sharp glint replacing the warmth. ā€œThereā€™s no need to be so possessive, squirrel.ā€ He looked past him, locking eyes with you again. ā€œThe choice is always yours, darling. But youā€™d be wise to consider all your options.ā€
For a moment, you felt that pull again, stronger this time. His words stirred something in you, something deep and unspoken. You werenā€™t tempted by the promise of power exactly, but there was a dark curiosity there, a part of you that wanted to know what he was truly offering, if only to understand why it resonated in the first place.
You took a step forward, brushing past Dean despite his murmured protest. ā€œIā€™m not interested in becoming a demonā€™s plaything,ā€ you said, your voice steady and firm. ā€œBut if youā€™re offering information, Iā€™m listening.ā€
Crowleyā€™s smirk returned, softer this time, almost genuine. ā€œWell, thatā€™s a start.ā€ He snapped his fingers again, and the darkness in the room seemed to recoil, lifting like fog under sunlight. ā€œVery well, then. Iā€™ll give you what you need. But a fair warningā€”things in this world often come with strings attached.ā€
ā€œSpare us the theatrics,ā€ Dean snapped, though his voice betrayed a hint of relief. ā€œJust tell us where to find the damned witch and the knife to kill her.ā€
Crowleyā€™s attention shifted reluctantly back to the elder Winchester. ā€œSheā€™s not far from here. Runs a little apothecary down on Royal Street. Youā€™ll know it when you see it.ā€ He glanced at you one last time, that glimmer of interest still evident in his gaze. ā€œDo be careful, kitten. It would be a shame if I didnā€™t get to see you again.ā€
You turned on your heel and headed for the door with Sam and Dean in tow, trying to ignore the way your heart was beating a little faster than it should have been. Youā€™d expected Crowley to be dangerous, charming even, but you hadnā€™t expected the encounter to linger like this.
As the three of you stepped back outside, Dean shot you a look, his brow furrowing. ā€œYou alright?ā€
You nodded, not quite trusting your voice yet. ā€œYeah,ā€ you replied after a moment. ā€œIā€™m fine.ā€
But as you walked back to the Impala, you couldnā€™t shake the feeling that youā€™d left something behind in that room with Crowleyā€”a piece of yourself, a curiosity awakened. And as much as you tried to ignore it, you couldnā€™t help but wonder if heā€™d seen something in you that even you didnā€™t fully understand.
Inside the Impala, you replayed his words in your mindā€”Youā€™ve got potential. You werenā€™t sure if it was a compliment or a warning, but it echoed there in the back of your thoughts, lingering like the smoke and shadows youā€™d left behind.
Crowley had planted a seed of doubt in youā€”a small, insidious thing. And as the engine rumbled back to life, you couldnā€™t help but think that maybe, just maybe, he knew exactly what he was doing all along.

Solid plans
A little late, but happy birthday to one of my favourite characters! Written for @wolfstarmicrofic prompt - scarecrow (513 words)
4 November 1983
The problem with having a three year old, Remus thought, was that nothing ever seemed to go according to plan. Though, that could be because the three year old in question was the son of James Potter, who hadn't ever followed instructions in his unfortunately short lifetime.
The plan was quite simple: Sirius had been away for a week for work, which had included his 24th birthday, so Remus had planned a surprise birthday lunch for when he arrived home, including all his favourite foods and a cake, baked using Effie Potter's red velvet recipe. It wasn't anything major or complicated, but Sirius would enjoy a simple meal with his family more after his long week.
The plan hinged on two things: first, Remus's ability to bake a cake without screwing it up the way he had always done previously, and second, Harry's cooperation.
The first, shockingly, went fine. Remus followed Effie's instructions to the letter, and managed to produce a tasty, if poorly iced, cake for them to enjoy.
The second part, Harry's cooperation, was where the problem came in. Because he'd been away for a full week, Sirius had not only missed his birthday, but Halloween as well. As such, Harry was insistent that they should welcome his godfather back by recreating Halloween and going trick-or-treating together.
Remus had tried to explain to the little boy that trick-or-treating was not an option, given that it was four days after Halloween and the middle of the day. He had tried to appease him by letting him wear his scarecrow costume, accepting that their birthday lunch would be slightly Wizard of Oz themed, but Harry was still not happy.
Remus spent the morning darting between setting up the table for lunch and stopping Harry from escaping out the front door, armed with his pillow case for candy-collecting. Eventually, Remus cast a shield charm over the door, at which point Harry decided to sit directly in front of it and throw his leftover Halloween candy at the shield, giggling as the sweets bounced off the magic into the room behind him.
Remus was in the kitchen when he felt a tug at the wards, and turned to see Sirius step through the Floo - only to be hit in the middle of his forehead by a flying peppermint toad.
He watched as Sirius took in the scene, from the little scarecrow staring up at him to the half-set table and lobsided birthday cake. Harry ran over to him, letting his godfather scoop him up into a hug and press kisses all over his face.
"Happy Halloween, Padfoot!" Harry yelled.
The pair then turned to Remus, Sirius grinning brightly as Harry giggled in his arms.
"Happy birthday, love," Remus said. "and welcome home!"
Sirius walked across to him and kissed him gently, before pulling him into a hug, Harry still squirming in his arms.
"You're wonderful," he whispered. "I love you both so much."

ARCHER'S WE ARE FANCON EXPERIENCE
i promised i would share my feelings, so here they are!
first of all, while i do still maintain that the venue was too small for how beloved the series is, even with the split into two days, and i have some gripes with merch sales, the organisation was otherwise good. it was always very clear where and when you needed to go and what you needed to do, which is always great for an anxious person like me. all the explanations were in three languages too (thai, english, and chinese), so navigating the space and the benefits was easy. the little setup of things to do before the concert starts was also great - there were merch booths for all of the boys who had merch to sell (which is everyone aside from aouboom), there were photobooths with different 'we are' themed templates, there was also, of course, gasha (or, as i like to call them, gambling machines) but hey! i got some merch off of that as well, so i'm honestly not even complaining.
now, onto the actual show! it was incredible, i can hardly imagine anything that would need to be added or changed. it honoured both the series and the artists on their own in many ways.
there were multiple performances with the entire cast, including a surprise appearance of jj, tee, and pepper (or, our mattmickbeer trio) during one song, who then also stuck around to talk about their characters and favourite scenes. friendship is a huge part of the series and they did not forget that. a lot of stage backgrounds and props were an homage to the series too (the one that felt particularly thought-out to me was the background for 'truth in the eyes', which was a lush garden - a callback to the mv's concept metaphor). the couples performed both their main songs and also one cover each, which were picked out by every cp for different reasons, but all of which were great. before every main song, there was a little video with the couple's moments that encapsulated their relationship, and they were really lovely and well-done (a great way of giving the artists a second to breathe too).
i think there was also pretty much everything each of the main eight could want to do on stage. pond and aou got to dance (together as well!), winny got to rap, phuwin and satang got to sing together. at least from what they said, they were given a lot of creative liberty in terms of choosing what they want to sing and do on stage as well, so that is also lovely. all of the performances were, of course, absolutely fantastic and even exceeded my expectations in some ways.
all the little chats between performances were also wonderful and everyone (or, almost everyone) got really emotional closer to the end. we had marc crying first, talking about how much this experience means to him and thanking poon for being his first real partner, and then the floodgates just opened. poon also teared up, winny started crying because marc started crying, then he cried some more when he actually started speaking himself, then satang started crying too, they talked about how much all of this means to them and how much they mean to each other, they held hands. then dear sweet boom almost sobbed on stage and aou cried too - they were also very thankful for everything and especially each other. pond tried very hard not to cry (and succeeded by breathing out every ten seconds and twirling around the stage), talking about how happy he is that everyone loved the series and them so much, saying that the cast became like a little family, and thanking phuwin for being a great partner, and phuwin also talked about how he was afraid of having high expectations and how grateful he is to the cast and the fans. this was definitely one of those moments, which made the whole experience so much more meaningful and emotional. i also wanted to hug all of them and tell them how amazing they are šŸ˜
the appreciation for the audience was huge throughout. pond kept putting his hand at his forehead to try to see all the fans sitting farther away, at one point aou asked for the lights to be turned on, so they could see everyone, during the last performance (which was 'we are forever'), they all came down from the stage and walked around us, waving at everyone.
after the huge three hour concert, there were still the benefits to work through, which ended up going on for five hours (until almost 2 am). the boys were all really lovely and nice throughout and i'm genuinely impressed by their ability not to let the understandable tiredness that they were all feeling interfere with their interactions with fans and each other.
so, to conclude! this was an absolutely incredible experience and i am so happy i decided to come here for the fancon (and actually managed to get the ticket). there are multiple countries they are going to next, as you know, and there will likely be more added in the future. so if you live in any of those countries, i am definitely saying you should go. and if you don't but it is within your means to go and you just weren't sure whether the fancon is worth an entire trip abroad - i am confirming that it very much is. i am confident you would not regret going.

Blaire Hopburn: My Favourite Character From My Least Favourite Piece of Media
So there's this webcomic called Lease Bound. It's set in Australia in 2017, and it follows Jaden and Riley, two lesbians forced to share an apartment after a mix-up with their leases (hence the title).
It was promoted as a lesbian love story, but it soon became pretty notorious for transphobia.
Jaden works as a bouncer for a female-only lesbian bar, and in Chapter 3, she refuses to let in three trans women, who don't take it well. The webcomic was heavily criticised for the way the trans women were drawn and how they behaved.
Years later, Lease Bound is still being updated regularly - in fact, Chapter 11 introduced a load of trans men and enby characters.
I've been following the updates for a while. The webcomic expresses a lot of views that I do not agree with - namely, that trans women are dangerous perverted men, and that trans men and enbies are either attention-seeking straight women or queer women too scared to question the "trans ideology cult".
And yet I keep coming back. It's partly out of morbid curiosity, to see what on Earth is going to happen next. But I think it's also because of one character I actually quite like.
Blaire Hopburn.
Tumblr media
Blaire is Riley's bisexual girlfriend. She works at the same shop as Riley, in a slightly more senior position. She's also studying cosmetology at university and is part of its LGBTQIA+ club.
In a comic that's been so heavily criticised (and rightly so), what makes Blaire so appealing to me?
It's partly because of her personality. The Cast Page describes her as "a passionate, bubbly woman, who always strives to do what she believes is rightā€¦ Even if not everyoneĀ elseĀ agrees." I generally like characters with those traits. I enjoy watching people who try to be good and make an effort to help others, but don't always do it in the best way.
And another reason I like Blaire is because I read her as autistic.
Blaire Hopburn: Accidentally Autistic?
Quite a few of Blaire's personality traits are things that I, as an autistic person, relate to a lot.
The author has described Blaire as, "So good at picking up when someone is upset, or not looking after themselves, so bad at reading the room regarding how to act." That could resonate with any autistic people who are high on empathy but low on social skills. You feel other people's pain, you want to help them, but you're not sure how. And what you try seems to make things worse.
This aspect of Blaire is present in Chapter 8, on Pages 2 and 3, when she and Jaden make conversation while erecting a bunk bed:
Blaire: So Jaden, is this your first move out of home? Jaden: I know it's a little later than most people... Blaire: Not judging! My 'rents insisted I stay home until I finish studying. Jaden: Oh nice. What are you studying? Blaire: Cosmetology! I tried early childcare and psychology too, but I couldn't handle that sort of selfless responsibility, haha! Jaden: Oh man, I feel that. My mum's in aged care, and takes care of my Nana now. I could not do what she does for a living, haha. Blaire: Do you think you took longer to move out because you felt guilty leaving your mum with your Nana? Jaden: How many years of psychology did you do...? Blaire: Sorry, that was a total guess! I didn't even last a full year!! Jaden: Could've fooled me, haha.
Thankfully, Jaden is nice enough to let that awkward moment pass, but she could have reacted to Blaire's psychoanalysis in a much worse way.
We also see Blaire being bad at socialising on Chapter 9 Page 17. Riley and Blaire have witnessed Jaden having an argument with her mum, and after her mum leaves, Blaire asks Jaden about it:
Tumblr media
Blaire: Did you want to talk about what happened with your mum, Jaden? Riley: BLAIRE...! Jaden: Hey, it's okay. I have been a bit of a downer... Sorry. Riley: No, you don't have to apologise! Blaire: Yeah, it just sounded pretty upsetting. Jaden: You could say that, haha...
That feels very much like something a person would do when they sense something is wrong and zero in on one way of dealing with it. "Come on, let's talk about our feelings! A problem shared is a problem halved, right? Right?"
There's even a point in Chapter 8 where Blaire muses, "Sometimes it feels like Muddles [Riley's pet cat] is able to comfort Riley in ways that I just can't..." Can you imagine how galling it must feel, knowing that a pet, a creature that can't even speak English, is better at helping your girlfriend than you are?
Ouch.
In addition, Blaire's desire to learn about trans topics and be a good trans ally reads a lot like a special interest to me.
Especially the fact that she randomly brings up trans people in conversation, seemingly apropos nothing at all:
Tumblr media
Blaire: Sorry I ditched you, babe. Auntie's keen for me to learn stock ordering. Riley: As long as you don't forget about me when you're a fully fledged store manager. Blaire: Never! So how'd the bunk end up treating you? Riley: Big upgrade from being on the floor. Blaire: And did Mudz approve? Riley: She was up there with me by morning. Blaire: Damn, that is good! Do you think Jaden could be trans?
That conversation with Riley had nothing to do with trans stuff, so Blaire's question is a bolt from the blue. I suspect the thought of Jaden being trans had been playing on Blaire's mind all day, and she was eager to grab the first chance to discuss it with someone.
She does something similar in a reply to an Anon question from when the author still had Tumblr:
Tumblr media
Anon: Compared to others of her demographic, I gotta give Blaire props for dating a butch gal and treating her well. Blaire: Of course! Butches deserve nothing but love! And that goes DOUBLE for trans women!
Again, that Anon didn't mention trans people at all, but Blaire still brought them up. She was just itching to infodump about trans rights, I just know it.
But Blaire's connection to trans stuff leads to the issues I have with the way she's being written.
Blaire Hopburn: Pretty Problematic?
I really don't like how Blaire is currently being utilised in the story. Mainly because she's made out to be kind-of an idiot. She doesn't notice when she's making her girlfriend feel uncomfortable. And she's quite bad at picking up on social cues more generally.
This is demonstrated in Chapter 11 on Pages 31 and 32. Blaire is conversing with Violet, Jaden's coworker, about Violet's daughter Faith. The view Blaire expresses is the strawman argument often used against trans people and their allies - the supposition that we believe that not conforming to your expected gender norms means you must be trans.
Violet: Oh, and thanks for being patient with Faith. I know she's a bit of a handful! Blaire: It's like you said: they're just very passionate. Just not about dresses and skirts, huh?
Violet's response is interesting, as is Blaire's train of thought after the exchange:
Tumblr media
Violet: NOPE! And I couldn't be happier! It makes buying HER clothes so much simpler! I hope SHE will steer clear of razors and makeup in HER teen years too, haha! Anyway, I best be getting my DAUGHTER to bed. See you at Ballroom Night! VROOM! Blaire: ... Blaire: (thinking) Dang it... It looks like Violet needs more help than I first thought... The sooner I get these [leaflets] to her the more time little Faith will have to choose what kind of body they want as an adult...!
Blaire didn't realise that Violet was emphasising the gendered ways to describe Faith because Violet already knows about trans stuff and rejects it. Instead, she just assumed Violet was ignorant and needed some educational leaflets.
(And Blaire also didn't notice the insult hidden in Violet's words. Blaire clearly shaves and wears makeup, so Violet was basically saying she hopes Faith doesn't turn out like Blaire. But Blaire has no reaction to that.)
Blaire is clearly not the best at detecting what people are implying. But that's being written in an exaggerated way, to satirise belief in "trans ideology" as stupid and in denial of reality.
It can almost feel as if Blaire is being portrayed as bad because of her autistic traits.
The author has addressed this in a comment on one of the bonus comic pages that came out after Chapter 11:
Important to keep in mind that none of the characters are written to be autistic. So Blaire isnā€™t being made into a villain or singled out for being autistic. In fact, a lot of her "social missteps" are a positive side to her character. Like she's pushy about gender nonsense, but she's also pushy when it comes to making sure her friends take care of themselves (making sure Jaden was getting her share of pancakes, pointing it out fully). She pushes because she cares. It has both positive and negative outcomes.
The trouble is, just because it wasn't the author's intention doesn't mean that's not how it looks. I know I'm not the only one who sees Blaire as autistic-coded.
And when Blaire's difficulties with social interaction are being played up in conversations about trans people, she isn't being written as a character. She's being used as a tool to poke fun at "the trans cult".
That's what annoys me about her portrayal. She isn't allowed to just be a character in a story - a nice, well-meaning but inexperienced girlfriend who happens to take an interest in trans rights. She has to be an extreme strawman of a trans ally, to push the author's anti-trans agenda.
Blaire Hopburn: Vicious Villain?
One of the webcomic's extra features is an "Actor AU", which includes this interview with Blaire's "actress":
Interviewer: Your character is quite controversial isn't she? Lots of people want her killed off and others are holding out hope for some sort of redemption. Which camp are you in, haha? Blaire's Actress: Neither. Interviewer: Oh...? Blaire's Actress: I actually like evil female characters. There's all these memes about deranged women, malicious women, heartless women... But when one does come along they want her removed or fundamentally changed before she's even spread her wings. Interviewer: Do you think fan opinion might change once Blaire ... takes flight? Blaire's Actress: I hope so. Realistically, both extreme camps will probably end up disappointed. But there's plenty of other great stuff to watch for. Will just have to burn the "Blaire bridge" when we come to it.
The funny thing is that the fans who comment on Lease Bound act as though Blaire is already a horrible person, but ... she really isn't?
At her worst, she's so focused on being a good trans ally that she neglects to check in with how others feel. But that's hardly "deranged" or "malicious" or "heartless", is it? Unless you already believe that supporting "trans ideology" makes you at least one of those things.
The closest thing I see to Blaire being villainous is in the first of the "When Riley Met Brick" bonus pages.
Tumblr media
Blaire: Exploring your femininity in a non-traumatic way might help make things clearer too. Riley: O-okay. Blaire: Why don't we go dress shopping later this week, then? Riley: U-uh... I'm not really... They never feel good. Blaire: Cute plus-size options have come a long way in the last few years. It won't be frumpy like the stuff from your old congregation, I promise! Riley: O-okay... *** Blaire: Well, what do you think? Riley: It's... I feel like I can't breathe... Blaire: Huh? But it's so loose and flow-y... Do you need a bigger size? Riley: N-no, please, get it off. OFF! OFF!! Blaire: Riles! Hey, hey! Don't thrash like that, you'll rip it! Here' I'm untying it, see? Riley: ... Blaire: So, no tie-arounds, zippers or buttons... How about this one? You just pull it straight over your head! Riley: I can't... Please, no more... Blaire: Hmm... I think we need to talk to someone who has a bit more expertise than me, baby...
Blaire is forcing Riley to try on dresses and do something she's really uncomfortable with, until Riley is screaming and thrashing about. That does seem very, very bad. But I wonder if there's more to this than meets the eye.
Riley's backstory hasn't been shown in the webcomic yet, but the author has said that she grew up in a religious cult where she was only allowed to wear dresses, never trousers. Blaire presumably doesn't fully understand how bad Riley's past was, as she assumes the issue is with the style of the dresses Riley has tried so far.
In an extra cast reply (and it's debatable how canon it is), Blaire does seem to grasp that what Riley has gone through was traumatising:
Tumblr media
Blaire: Riley's discomfort with femininity is from being forced into it as a kid. That doesn't mean she HATES girly stuff, she just has internalised misogyny to work through at her own pace!
Yes, Blaire is going about things in the wrong way. But ... she kind-of has a point? I certainly wouldn't call it "internalised misogyny", but it is trauma, and that needs addressing.
Not wanting to wear dresses isn't a problem, but the reason for it can be. Riley's discomfort is clearly rooted in pretty serious trauma, and she needs to be able to sit down with someone and work through that. Sadly, she's not yet confident enough to open up fully about it.
And even if she could, Blaire isn't the right person to do this with. Blaire did study psychology briefly at university, but she didn't last a full year. Her idea of helping Riley is taking her to see Brick, a non-binary person ... who's training to be a veterinary nurse, not a human therapist. Blaire is nowhere near qualified to give Riley the help she needs.
I don't see this as an evil trans ally preying on a poor little lesbian. I see this as two flawed women talking past each other, trying and failing to understand each other, ill-equipped to cope with each other's issues.
And then the other "villainous Blaire" moment is at the end of "When Riley Met Brick", as Blaire criticises Riley for the way she talks to Brick:
Tumblr media
Riley: Maybe I'm just feeling a bit confused because I've never met a trans person befor- Brick: THAT is an assumption rooted in transphobic bias! Trans people aren't a monolith! You can't tell who's trans just by looking at them! Riley: Sorry, I didn't know...! Blaire: You know what they say about assuming babe... Riley: I swear I didn't mean to... Blaire: You need to choose your words with more care. Riley: Right... I'm really sorry...
The dark colours, Blaire's body language and ominous words, the top-down perspective on the scared-looking Riley ... this page is trying to make us see Blaire as in the wrong and Riley as her victim. We're meant to judge her for putting her zealousness for trans acceptance before her concern for her girlfriend's feelings.
That's the last time we've seen Blaire in the webcomic so far, but she's due to reappear in Chapter 13. It seems as though the author is planning to do something big with Blaire - something that will cement her as the villain of Lease Bound. But it hasn't happened yet. And I'm curious to see what it is.
I suspect it's something to do with Blaire being in a more senior position at Riley's workplace, as well as the fact that her aunt works there. There's a risk that Blaire could use her influence with her aunt to force Riley out of a job, after a major disagreement over trans rights or something.
But based on what we've seen so far in the webcomic, I can't picture Blaire doing something like that. She just doesn't seem like the kind of person to do something so extreme.
Basically, it's going to take a lot to convince me that Blaire Hopburn is an irredeemable monster.
TL;DR Lease Bound is massively problematic. The one bright spot for me is Blaire, the nice, eager-to-help, slightly autistic-coded bi lady. Unfortunately, she keeps being turned into a caricature to mock those who support trans rights, and that bothers me.

Iā€™m by no means an expert on the Mahabharata or Hinduism in general (Iā€™d say my knowledge on Hinduism especially is rather limited) but am I wrong in thinking that the game was rigged against Duryodhana from the start?
Thereā€™s no denying that heā€™s far from a saint and some of the things he did were awful but I feel like heā€™s portrayed as such a completely morally black and bankrupt character when itā€™s sort of far from that.
Like as far as major characters are concerned, heā€™s the only one who has absolutely no interest or regard in the caste system whatsoever. Thereā€™s like three speeches of his that very very clearly show that. His intervention with Karna at their first meeting, although perhaps partly due to opportunism depending on your interpretation, is one of the most honourable scenes in the entire epic to me.
Not once has he ever even implied that Karnaā€™s caste is of any importance and throughout their entire relationship, there was no one who he treated with more love and respect than Karna. Even in general, itā€™s well established that his judgements of people are based on their individual qualities and not caste.
Again, not saying that he was a good guy at all but he was also known for being generous and a good ruler. Heā€™s almost always interpreted as a power hungry yet incompetent person but thatā€™s also far from the truth. He was Balaramaā€™s favourite student which means that there was a lot of good about him or why would someone like Balarama even bother with him?
Also, being told that on the day of his birth his uncle told his father to kill him and then his mother saying she should have killed him, is not something that anyone should hear lmfao so I think, in certain aspects, his anger is justified.
Itā€™s also very clear that from the start, Krishna was against him. Every act of his towards Duryodhana was deliberately meant to sabotage him in some way. Even Balarama acknowledged this so itā€™s basically a matter of fact.
So yeah, Iā€™m not saying he was a good guy or that heā€™s just some misunderstood pookie but I think that not acknowledging some of his very good traits and the fact that everything was rigged against him since day 1 is a disservice to the whole point of the epic.
I hope I didnā€™t offend anyone with this. I know for over a billion people the Mahabharata is a religious text and the last thing I want to do is disrespect that regardless of whether I believe in it or not. Iā€™d really like to hear some of your opinions on this take and Iā€™m also really keen on engaging with people about the epic in general <3

So...quick question. How would you rank each CC game in terms of character design? I would love to hear your thoughts!
Oh! Good question! Let me get some pictures, and I'll come back with my list!
1st place: Mysteries of The Past
Tumblr media
I LOVE the character designs of MotP! It does an amazing job at replicating the style of the late 19th century, which it's supposed to be set in, and while some things aren't entirely period-accurate, I love it regardless! Also, the characters' physical appearances are detailed and unique, creating a large diversity among this season's cast.
Plus, Victorian Steampunk is one of my favourite styles (even if I don't wear it), so that's an added bonus for me!
2nd place: The Conspiracy
Tumblr media
This season showcases how much Pretty Simple's character designs have improved since its release, as it brought back many S1 characters. The details in the designs are beautiful, and this is also when PS started trying more facial expressions and poses for the characters. This season is a perfect example of how character designs can be improved with practice, so it earned second place!
3rd place: Travel in Time
Tumblr media
S6 gets third place thanks to how many different periods' styles it's replicated. We had Ancient Times, the 1960s, the Renaissance, the future, the Age of Sails (which I love pirates, so bonus!) and Medieval Asia. This season had so many unique styles within it that it's only fair it should be in the top three! I think the only reason it's not higher up is because it's shorter than the other seasons, and while I don't know if I would want it to go for 60-ish cases, it would have been interesting to see what other times we could have visited.
(I still think we should have visited MotP during S6, but that's an idea for another time, so I'll shut up about it for now!)
4th place: Supernatural Investigations
Tumblr media
S7 gets fourth place, as I love seeing its take on different supernatural creatures. I am a HUGE fan of the paranormal and magic, so this season is right up my alley! While some designs could use improvements (*cough* the demons *cough*), I still like seeing all the different mythical creatures. Regardless of the things I would choose to change to improve some of the characters' designs, it did an excellent job making characters who are so different than what we see in other seasons.
5th place: Save The World
Tumblr media
Save The World is when I feel that Criminal Case really started to branch out with its diversity in character designs. We visit so many countries throughout the seasons that it makes sense for the characters to reflect the differences between nationalities. I won't speak for how accurate some of the designs are for all of the nationalities featured in this season, but I think PS did a good job designing characters to represent each country. You can even see it among the Bureau since few members originate from the same country. Overall, StW has fantastic character designs, even if the following seasons have more details.
6th place: City of Romance
Tumblr media
OMG! Who would have thought we'd ever see the day CoR DIDN'T come in last place on a list?! (At least I don't recall them ever not being in last place...)
Even if CoR failed horribly at being the final season of CC, the character designs are good. Some characters I like more than others, but overall, they have plenty of details without being overwhelming. Had CoR gotten the chance to be a full 30-case season, we might have seen more characters come back from past seasons and see the design improvements like we did in S5 and S6. Like I always say, CoR had the potential to be better than it was, but at least the character designs weren't a total flop!
7th place: Pacific Bay
Tumblr media
(AnxietyFluffy, please forgive me for putting S2 so low on this list.šŸ˜)
While I enjoy PB's plot and characters, unfortunately, I had to put it so low on the list since, compared to other seasons, its character designs aren't as impressive to me. Mainly, it's because it's only the second game, so PS was still working on improving character designs. While I can see an improvement between S1 and S2, it's just not enough for me to put PB higher on the list. But, I still think PB did a good job creating diversity between districts, and while I will always question how the climates of these districts coexist, it was nice to see the differences reflected in the character designs.
8th place: Grimsborough
Tumblr media
Last but certainly not least is Grimsborough! While it's nostalgic and the game introduced me to CC, sadly, its character designs showcase the fact that it's the first game. I would never say the designs are bad, but they're not as good as they were in the following seasons. There's something simplistic about the designs compared to feature seasons, but I still enjoy them. However, I am glad that PS started making the characters more detailed and unique in the following seasons, and I wish we could have seen more S1 characters come back in future seasons to see how much their designs could have improved.
I loved seeing how PS's character designs improved over the course of their 8 games while staying true to their CC style. I've always enjoyed the style and characters of this series, and it was fun to pick which ones I liked most! I'm sure others would put the seasons in a different order based on character designs, but I'll stand by my choices.
Thank you for the ask, eggsandmasks! You always send me some fun brain teasers!šŸ˜

What do you mean when u say Lestat is a Miltonā€™s Satan hero?
Ah! Okay! Going to try and keep this shorter than my Byronic Hero post, haha, but weā€™ll see how we go.
Before we startā€¦
When we talk about Miltonā€™s Satan as a character archetype, weā€™re talking about something that was originated in John Miltonā€™s epic poem, Paradise Lost, which was published in 1667. This was before gothic literature was quote-unquote ā€˜inventedā€™ (as I mentioned in my first Byronic Hero post, gothic literature is widely accepted to have begun with Horace Walpoleā€™s 1764 novel, The Castle of Otranto ā€“ worth the read, even just for the bonkers prophecy-speaking skeletons and a character dying from a helmet falling on his head, haha), but had, and continues to have, an enormous impact on gothic literature and horror in general.
The poem is set across twelve ā€˜booksā€™ (chapters, basically), and is effectively a re-telling of the Book of Genesis but with two narrative throughlines. One throughline is Adam and Eve who represent more conventional biblical heroes in the poem, and the other is Satan (also called Lucifer in the poem). Weā€™ll talk more about them in a sec, but before we begin itā€™s important to note that Paradise Lost was never intended as a criticism of the church.
Milton was a religious man, which is a really important thing to note when we start talking about Paradise Lost, but he was also heavily influenced as a writer by King Charles Iā€™s autocratic rule and the English Civil War which lasted from 1642-1651. Iā€™m not going to get into the nitty gritty of all of that, but whatā€™s important to note is that he wrote Paradise Lost in a really increased period of anti-authority sentiment in the UK and believed strongly in rebellion against authority, which feeds into how he invented his Satan.
Miltonā€™s Satan in Paradise Lost
Luciferā€™s arc in Paradise Lost is a relatively straight forward one. He begins as Godā€™s favourite angel but his pride and his vanity gets the better of him as God starts to invent (and favour) earth and mankind, and he comes to resent Godā€™s authority over the kingdom of heaven. He believes he deserves to be loved as God is, so he leads a rebellion against God, only to lose, and he and the rest of the fallen angels, get cast out of Heaven and into Hell.
Out of spite, Lucifer decides to make Hell his own, with the iconic line ā€œBetter to reign in Hell, then serve in Heavā€™nā€ and to set his sights on corrupting Godā€™s new favourite thing ā€“ Mankind (at this point, just Adam and Eve) ā€“ and heā€™s ultimately pretty darn successful. Iā€™m not going to talk too much about the specific ways that he does that, but itā€™s basically a mix of deception and sowing seeds of lust, and the end result is that humanityā€™s corrupted, and God further punishes Satan by turning him and the other fallen angels into snakes.
The devil had been depicted a few times in literature and poetry before this time ā€“most notably in Danteā€™s Inferno ā€“ but these depictions of the devil were always monstrous. Danteā€™s Satan is a three-mouthed beast keeping his sinnerā€™s constantly in pain, trapped in Hell himself instead of reigning over it, and this is where Miltonā€™s Satan hit the streets and changed character archetypes for good.
Because Miltonā€™s Satan was hot.
Sure, he was evil, proud, vain, impulsive and did terrible things, but he was also charismatic, beautiful, graceful, funny, with all the best lines in the poem. He was ā€œa lonely rebelā€¦[and] an appealing, sympathetic deviant.ā€
And ā€“ I canā€™t stress this enough ā€“ nobody had ever done that before in Western writing. Ā ā€œ[Milton] transformed the way evil was depicted in Western texts and cultural imagery,ā€ and also created the hero-villain archetype, something we now often refer to as an antihero.
On top of that though, Miltonā€™s Satan was deceptive (literally a shapeshifter!), impulsive, had an incestuous family, and made sex sinful by making it lustful (Miltonā€™s thesis over and over in his writing is that sex is great as long as nobody feels lust lol). He was also a loser, haha ā€“ he lost every battle he fought, and is in some ways regarded as a caricature of the epic odyssey hero, but look, Iā€™m not going to get into all of that here.
Miltonā€™s Satan is a tragic struggle between the entirely villainous and the entirely heroic.
Letā€™s just grab a quote from the excellent paper Miltonic Influences in Gothic Victorian Literature:
ā€œAs a rejected, troubled child of God, Satan decides to forcefully take what he thinks he should have by birthright. When he does not succeed, he decides to corrupt Godā€™s new childrenā€¦Satan is narcissistic, vain, proud and jealous. However, he is also remorseful and aware of the wrongness of his actions. He alone thinks he cannot be pardoned for the sins he commits so he forcefully pushes forward in his need for revenge. At the same time, Satan shows disturbingly human characteristics, but also inexplicable immorality. Just when one thinks one can reach a humane reason for Satanā€™s behaviour, one is left baffled by how evil he actually is.ā€
The important thing to remember about your Miltonā€™s Satan archetype is that he was not just invented as a means of Miltonā€™s grappling with autocracy and anti-authority sentiment, he was also really Miltonā€™s way of grappling with humanity.
He leaves Adam and Eve as the Biblical heroes of the story, which makes them hard to engage with. What Milton wanted with Satan was to lean into the fallen angel element of him and show him as a character with the capacity for both good and evil, and the tendency to choose evil, thus making him both ultimately tragic, but also more human than the human characters. He was a way for Milton to explore what he felt were his own sins and moral failings, and in the process of that, became a way for readers to explore that too.
Evolution of Miltonā€™s Satan
Miltonā€™s Satan as an archetype has grown a lot over the years since his invention. Even by the time gothic literature started being ā€˜officiallyā€™ written a century later, the character archetype really existed on a spectrum, with some Miltonā€™s Satanā€™s such as Ambrosio in Matthew Gregory Lewisā€™ 1796 novel, The Monk leaning more villain than hero, and the Monster in Mary Shelleyā€™s 1818 novel, Frankenstein, whoā€™s cast out by his maker and not given the chance he needs in life to be good. The Monster lacks a lot of Miltonā€™s Satanā€™s typical traits like pride and self-love, but he continues the archetypeā€™s throughline of being a cast out child who out of loneliness, becomes vengeful against the authority that rejected him and ultimately depraved/
Like I said, this archetype underpins all antiheroes today, and thereā€™s a lot of writing about characters as wide-ranging as Hannibal Lector to Batman as being owing to Miltonā€™s Satan, so thereā€™s heaps out there to read if youā€™re interested, but yes! Letā€™s talk a little about Lestat.
Lestat as Miltonā€™s Satan
Trying to keep this short(ish, anyway, haha): I really do think Lestat is born out of this archetype. Lestatā€™s an anti-authority character ā€“ an enormous part of which stems from his fatherā€™s autocratic and abusive reign of the household, and the feeling of abandonment by God when his father pulled him out of the church where heā€™d learn to be a priest only to continue his abuse. Lestat in that sense also faces rejection from three ā€˜Godā€™sā€™ / makers not just one one ā€“ his spiritual God, his biological father, and later Magnus as his vampiric maker.
Interestingly too, Miltonic Satanā€™s remain heavily tied to their makerā€™s even after their rejection. In that paper above on Miltonic Influences in Gothic Victorian Literature, they note:
ā€œThe Satanic hero or the hero-villain is a dark, troubled and mysterious individual. He is shaped by life experiences and traits which he inherits from his maker.ā€
Something the show has reminded us a few times now. Lestatā€™s grounding in trauma and abandonment is steeped in the Miltonic trope of rejection by authority leading to rejection of authority, but even beyond that, Miltonā€™s Satan is impulsive, morally weak, self-centered, proud, vain, lonely, beautiful but also, vitally, has a capacity for real good and an ability to love (and, more often, lust, haha). Heā€™s a hero-villain that ultimately draws the viewer in because heā€™s exceptionally human in his monstrousness, and that is what is at the heart of the Miltonā€™s Satan archetype. Heā€™s evil but heā€™s human in a way traditional villains were robbed of, and similarly, heā€™s good but heā€™s human in a way traditional heroes werenā€™t allow to be, and to me that is Lestat in a nutshell.

saw a post about how cliquey the fandom can be, canā€™t find it for the life of me to reblog but thought Iā€™d share some observations Iā€™ve had over the years of basically being a ghost on here. Granted this is less on behaviour and more on how we can section ourselves naturally.
I find that the bigger the fandom the easier it is for it to get divided into little subsections, especially if it has a lot of content in season variation, characters, and location. Ninjago is a very big prime example of this with around 17 seasons, 2 specials and the pilots, many with themes attached to them. thereā€™s a lot that you could cling onto and make it your one big focus on the show.
It also has a giant cast especially when you include roles that are either small or season specific, once I just tried to see how many I could name alone from memory and I got a little over sixty and Iā€™m sure thereā€™s more. When it comes to location we donā€™t have too much in mainland Ninjago that begs to be further explored considering most people we actually take notice in live in the main city. But add in the 15 other realms and we have a whole host of interesting locations to explore.
To circle back to characters we also have a lot in our main cast, with a standard of six ninja, now three students, and if you still want to count Pixal, Misako and Wu because you are in denial, and Garmadonā€™s two season stint in the title sequence, we have 13 whoā€™s been included in the main cast at some point , creating multiple dynamics we can work with and latch onto.for me personally I have always gravitated to the Jay focused side of the fandom because that was where I was most comfortable, looking over character studies, art, headcanons, general Jaya stuff because I have a favourite ship dammit, and skybound analysis because despite how strange of a season it was it was also somehow my comfort season, my favourite one I dare say. I admit it was mainly because I didnā€™t really think about themes and subtext back in the day and just always loved a romance heavy season of anything. I was simple sue me.
But now I love it because as much as I donā€™t wish to admit it I can see a lot of myself in early seasons Jay, not necessarily a good thing but watching him grow out of specific negative behaviours helped me to do so myself. With the season itself itā€™s just fun to pick it apart and notice what exactly was so off to me when I was younger.
And something like this can apply to everyone in the fandom, which is why they stick to their own corners, because thatā€™s where theyā€™re most comfortable. They may stick to a character like Lloyd because he has a lot of angst attached to him to play around with, or someone like dare that because heā€™s a completely comedic character and prime for crack scenarios, or Nya because of her journey of self discovery. There are definitely still people obsessing over SOG or TOE, or possession. And what I do see is people happy to share their thoughts on their own ā€œfixation seasonā€ as I call it.
This is at least how I sort pretty much all media in my own brain and I think itā€™s kinda neat how the internet can work like it. With a whole branching system that if you take certain doors can have you starting off in the surface entirety of the show to looking over really obscure details like how much the word wish is used every season (great post if you can find it).
this definitely became way more in depth than expected but this is what I have noticed. I very much like how much the internet aligns with my thinking patterns and the imaginatory map of my brain.
Now I just need to figure out if this is neurotypical behaviour .

So my opinions on all the Dead Boy Detective/DBDA Characters
All of these are opinions as someone who has watched the show a few times now and also the Doom Patrol episode and Iā€™ll give my opinions on the Doom Patrol versions at the end.
Spoilers for Dead Boy Detectives Show. And Doom Patrol season 3 ep. 3 and that episode alone
Charles Rowland
- Charles is such a sweetheart I love him. Heā€™s always looking out for his friends and literally went to hell for Edwin, and kicked the Night Nurse for him. I just love him so much.
- I felt so bad for him in episode one when he says his dad, ā€œwasnā€™t the nicest guy,ā€ and in episode three when we see him break being forced to see a father k!ll his family over. I was actually crying with him saying he doesnā€™t ā€œwant to be a bad guyā€! It broke me so badly, the abuse he went through and the fear heā€™ll become like his abusers is a very real thing and to see a character go through that makes the story feel more real, and makes me more sad. He could use some therapy.
- Him being the ā€œbrawnā€ of the team is pretty funny to me but thats most because if you watch the cast interactions youā€™ll see what I mean.
- All in all, I love him. He is loving, protective, loyal and has golden retriever with attachment issues energy mixed with scary dog privilege but the dog isnā€™t scary unless provoked.
Edwin Paine/Payne
- Adorable, get him some therapy please! He needs it! Man was so repressed for the first part of this show I thought Iā€™d die before he confessed. But I donā€™t blame him honestly, his death was traumatic and being called a ā€œMary Annā€ whilst being sacrificed likely would put a bad taste in your mouth about the idea of you being queer in any way shape or form. I am so proud of him good job!
- Honestly he just makes me so happy, and I love how he interacts with everyone and grows!
Crystal Palace
- I love her she is so bad ass and I hope wish the best for her
- She needs better taste in men, my suggestion date women
- I want to see a little more of her Nepo baby side of her past cause clearly that was a thing
Niko Sasaki
- Sweetie! I miss her! She was the only other person other than Charles to get Edwin out of his shell and it hurts me so much to see her be gone. Her death will forever haunt me.
Cat King
- I love him so much, he is my favourite kind of not evil but not good guy the kind that plays a game with people by flirting! Ahhh I love him! I donā€™t love that he falls for Edwin(Iā€™ll make a separate post on this issue)
- Anywho I still love him he gives off chaotic gender neutral vibes and the song Sex With a Ghost was made for him, I just love him!
Monty the Crow
- Monty I love you but donā€™t kiss people without consent!
- Honestly he was very important, and sweet he didnā€™t deserve all the pain heā€™s been through, may better things come his way.
Jenny the Butcher
- Badass. I love everything about her. Her style, the way she gives advice, yes I just love her so much. I want to see more of her.
- Her episode made me so sad for her ;-;
Esther Finch
- Honestly I love her as a villain she was so evil, and a genuine threat. She is also so hot and scary I just love her.
David the Demon
- A creep I didnā€™t like him, I donā€™t know what else you want?
Doom Patrol versions!
Charles Rowland
- He was so funny in this, I loved him. I love how the show conveyed a mutual interest from him to Edwin they are both just too dense to say anything about it. I also love that it seems the only thing he knows about America is that they like baseball.
- They did have to go off and hurt me with the fear of water scene, but he was so sweet protecting Edwin from the Night Nurse(who in this is just 10 times scarier)
Edwin Paine
- Him not getting anything about modern times and brushing off his feelings for Edwin was so well done! I love how he tells Larry he ā€œisnā€™t like himā€ saying he isnā€™t queer and that if he were that would be bad, he says this all in a very rude and brash tone and then proceeds to comfort Charles in the nicest to he is capable of.
- Beautiful 10/10
Crystal Palace
- Boss ass Bitch, girl boss. 8/10 I love her but no real opinions yet that is I may go back one day and edit this for her
I hope you liked this dumb post :3

Michael B Jordan x actress!reader
I fell in love with Killmonger again thanks to Wakanda Forever šŸ’–šŸ˜ After rewatching my favourite Michael B Jordan movies, I couldn't help but disassociate a little bit.Ā So, hope you enjoy it! šŸ’˜āœØ

ā”‚CASTING
Y/N always knew she wanted to be an actress. Since she was a little girl and watched with her grandmother some novelas, trying to memorize the lines so she could recite it late at night in her bed. She dreamed to one day star in one of the Hollywood films she had grown up watching; one day she would meet her favorite actors and, if she was lucky, perform alongside them.
At eighteen, with a scholarship for a theater course and her dreams, she moved to LA. The first few weeks were magical; everything was new, and she found herself walking through the locations of her favorite movies. The fantasies quickly ran out of steam; the scholarship was full but didnā€™t cover her expenses, and with her savings dwindling and the money running out like water, Y/N needed a job.
Luckily, a Mexican restaurant was hiring, so Y/N put her Spanish skills to use and got the job with a little persistence and kindness. Although it was a part-time position, she occasionally put in extra time to make up for going out to auditions.
It was her 100th casting test when her nineteenth birthday arrived. Her roommates sung "happy birthday" and bought her a cupcake. Wishing she hadĀ  lucky, Y/N blew the candle.
Ā ā—¦ ā—¦ ā—¦
"They're looking for a Latina actress between the ages of 18 and 24." Julie, one of her roommates, said while grabbing a flyer. "They left it at the college; I thought you may give it a try."
ā€œI guess; It won't harm to give it a shot.ā€ Y/N muttered.
That's how she ended up in a chair, dangling her feet nervously, waiting her turn. Each girl returning from the test had a mixture of delight and disappointment on their faces, leaving her confused. Y/N reread the script for the fiftyth time when her name was called. Before stepping into the room, she took a big breath.
ā€œSo when you're ready, Y/LN.ā€ As he sat down next to three other people, the producer spoke.
Y/N inhaled deeply, closed her eyes to get into character, and started reciting her lines.
"The real monsters donā€™t hide in the dark, under your bed, or in the woods." While speaking, she slowly raised her gaze. ā€œThey live with us; we pass them on the streets daily."Ā
"The truly terrifying monsters are the ones who smile at you before stabbing your back."Ā
Y/N clenched her jaw and took a moment to reflect.
"The real monsters are the ones we call family. The ones we trust with our darkest secrets and fears. Those who should be protecting us are the first to twist a knife in the face of our faults when we least expect it." As she spoke, tears started to form in her eyes.
Y/N expressed gratitude and waited for the producer's debate with his assistants. She wrung her hands nervously, doing a breathing exercise to keep calm.
"Well, we appreciate your performance, but we need to see if you get along with the cast." The producer spoke up, pulling out a piece of paper and holding out his hand. "Memorize these lines and return in about ten minutes.ā€
Ā ā—¦ ā—¦ ā—¦
When Y/N returned, someone was already standing in the center of the room. It was a tall man dressed in a sweatshirt ensemble, his face was tilted as he held the script in his hands.Ā
"Ready, Y/LN?" The man turned around in response to the producer's question.
Y/N gasped as she realized that the person she would be acting with wasĀ  Michael B. fucking Jordan. She brought her hand to her mouth to pull herself together, nodding her head for them to begin.
"You can't believe what they say; it's all just lies. They want to play with your mind, manipulate you so you won't be able to escape their sick game." Michael stated incisively.
"It's funny because they said the same thing about you." Y/N replied while focusing on his eyes. "Why should I believe you are telling the truth?"
"Iā€™d never lie to you." When she turned away, he assured her.
ā€œWell, it seems that they were right. You cannot prove your point.ā€ Y/N said as she started to leave.
Michael held her arm, pulling her back into place and lessening the previous distance.
"And how did they prove it to you? What was the excuse, huh? that they are your family?"
Y/N anxiously bit her lip.
"I can't force you to believe what I say; that is your own choice to decide which course you will take.ā€ Michael spoke while resting his hand on her chest's left side.
While struggling to hold his eyes, Y/N gasped, her heart beating and her cheeks flushed.Ā
"Your heart will tell you what to do; follow your instincts, and if it decides to go beside me,ā€ He held her chin with his other hand. ā€œI'll be waiting for you."
The intensity of his words gave Y/N shivers, and she had to use all her self-control to keep from fainting in his arms.
ā€œHow can I tell if I'm making the right decision? ā€œ As his palm touched her cheek, Y/N asked while tightly closing her eyes.
"You can't, but you've to believe in yourself." Her eyes opened as Michael ended the scene;Ā  they stared at each other for a few seconds before the producer exclaimed ā€˜cutā€™.
"Congratulations, then! You have the part. Youā€™ll get an email with the information in two to three days.ā€ After standing up to greet her, the producer spoke.
ā€œOh my goodness, thank you.ā€ Y/N cheered enthusiastically. ā€œThank you so much, I won't disappoint."Ā
The producer simply nodded his head in agreement and left. Y/N shouted enthusiastically while using a few brazilian swear words to express her happiness.
ā€œI don't know what you said, but I hope it was cheerful.ā€ Michael B. Jordan commented behind her, causing her to leap forward. ā€œOh my bad. I didn't mean to scare you."
"That's okay. I had my head in the clouds. Itā€™s just hard to believe that this is actually happening.ā€ Y/N admitted while grinning.
"Try to believe it; you did a great job and deserved that role." With a hand on her shoulder, Michael reassured her. "Catch you at the recording.ā€
Y/N shook her head, too stunned to speak. When she confirmed that she was the only one in the room, she whispered a hushed ā€˜porraā€™.

Hi, I know I've been MIA for a while, but since the news about the cancellation of Shadow and Bone broke I've been sad and I need to let it all out. I've come to think of my blog here like a safe haven, so there's no better place for this.
These photos are of the very first original amigurumis I've ever made (sorry for the first photo, I hastily put it together just for this post because none of my photos seemed good enough). As you can see they are some of the characters of Shadow & Bone: Alina, the Darkling, Inej and Kaz. This was back in 2021, when the show premiered. Back then I had never heard of the Grishaverse, but when I saw the teaser my curiosity was piqued so I gave the books a chance and I LOVED them. After so many years on a reader's block and at a time in my life where I was struggling to get by, I had something new and exciting to look forward to. I loved the show (watched it twice in a row, actually), I loved the cast and I loved everything surrounding the Grishaverse. I even convinced two of my friends to read the books (and I regret nothing) šŸ˜‚
I was so thrilled I HAD to do something, to create something new inspired by the Grishaverse. At that moment I had been crocheting only for a year but I thought I could try and see if something came out of it. That's how I crocheted Alina, my very first bookish amigurumi. It's not my best work, sure, but till this day I'm so very proud of the result. This was my first attempt at designing an amigurumi, I felt like I was improving my craftsmanship while honouring one of my favourite fantasy sagas. So I kept going, I crocheted the Darkling, made changes to get a better design, started putting more effort into my photos, even replicating the show posters. I kept growing my collection, adding Inej and Kaz and taking fun photos of all of them.
I didn't get far in terms of interactions and likes with them but I didn't care that much, I was just genuinely elated that I was creating something new with my bare hands and that was my priority.
And after them, I stuck to the book amigurumis. Created new patterns and characters, got more involved in photography and photoedition, and strived to do better with each new amigurumi. I got happier too, the thrill to create and share not only my craft but the books I love the most has been the best part of these last three years. And none of that wouldn't have existed without Shadow & Bone, without Leigh Bardugo and her universe, without that amazing cast and all of the writers and staff that have worked tirelessly to bring the Grishaverse to life.
So yeah, I'm heartbroken it has come to this abrupt and unfair end, especially when there was just a season left. In a way it feels like putting an end to a part of my journey as an amigurumi artist, this first part in which I was fumbling to learn and create something new. And as sad as it is, I want to say thank you too. It's not much, but it feels right to use my small amigurumi kingdom and reach to say thank you to everyone involved in the Grishaverse. You've made me unbelievably happy in so many different ways that I have trouble putting it into words.
Thank you as well to everyone who has taken a bit of their time to like, share and leave comments about my Grishaverse amigurumis. You helped me believe in my work and gave me strength to keep crocheting.
I will always remember the first time I showed Alina and the Darkling to my best friends and we talked about how I could crochet the rest, and which ones they wanted to see the most and "omg what if one of the actors noticed your work?????". It will never happen, but imagining the possibility still makes me feel a bit giddy even after two years.
If you've read this far, thank you to you too and sorry for my silly ramblings ā™„ļø If you love S&B too I'm free to cry together about all of the things we will never see on screen anymore.
P.S.: who would've thought that little me having a crush on Prince Caspian (aka the great Ben Barnes) would have ended in crocheting plushies inspired in book characters??? Not me for sure šŸ˜‚
