Aristotle on the Middle Ground

We all want to do the right thing at the right time. But how can we know what's the right thing to do in any given situation?

If i want to be brave, how can i make sure I'm not being reckless?

When does confidence become arrogance?

Aristotle addresses this issue, referring to the solution as the "golden mean"

Aristotle argued that doing the right thing, comes down to being virtuous. Through practice, repetition and imitation of others, we can train ourselves to excel at any virtue. Want to be kind? Simply do kind things often. Want to be forgiving? Copy a forgiving person you know. Do and you will be.

He famously wrote: We are what repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

However, it's not easy to know the right action to do. Every moral decision, every choice, is unique.

Aristotle said that the good act is the "mean" between two extremes. Two vices: the vice of excess and the vice of deficiency. In short, as the ancient Greek poet Hesiod wrote: Moderation in all things.
