Imagine you and your fankids or child f/os experiencing a thunderstorm!
If your kids are scared of the thunder and lightning, do you try your best to distract them or comfort them? Or maybe you try to show them that there’s nothing to be afraid of, if so, how would you do that?
If you’re the one who’s afraid of thunder and lightning, do your kids do their best to comfort you? Or are you both scared together? Is there another f/o there to comfort you both?
Maybe you and your kids love thunderstorms and want to watch! Do you gather round a window to enjoy the show, or do you pile into the car and go full storm chaser to get the up close and personal experience?

Map Overview
Lots:
Wakaba
You’ll get your first view of Mt. Komorebi itself from Wakaba, the neighborhood at the base of the mountain. It’s a beautiful residential area with plenty to do. If it’s your first day in town, it’s good to take it slow and start here. Set the mood with a stroll through the gardens or go for a swim near the waterfall. Remember to return respectful greetings when you receive them, and pay attention to shoe removal signs in genkan entryways.
If you’re traveling with kids, make sure to hit up the Festival of Youth in the main plaza. Kids will love meeting Yamachan, the town mascot, and joining the Voidcritter Hunt. While they’re off doing that, you can check out the vending machine collectibles or try the festival-exclusive character crepes, too!
Oh, and speaking of food… you simply have to try hot pot. Sukiyaki is my favorite, but mostly I enjoy it because it’s perfect for a nice meal together. You can cook it right at the kotatsu table where you’re warm and comfy. Plus, seconds are encouraged! And thirds! Try to stop me from having more than one bowl, I dare you.
Komorebi Fact: Lots of folks like to use chopsticks when they’re eating, but your utensil choice is ultimately up to you. (I just think it just makes picking up maki rolls easier.) And some foods, like yummy taiyaki, you can hold in your hands!
Senbamachi
Once you’ve gotten acclimated, head up the mountain a bit to Senbamachi, meaning Thousand Leaves Town. This more traditional area is set right into nature. It’s idyllic, scenic, and serene. Most of the folks here have learned to live in the moment and take life as it comes. It really encourages people to settle into their emotions and find balance.
My favorite thing to do is gather some friends and take a hike. The sign at the trailhead lays out all the different places you can visit, and there’s so much to see along the way. Once you’ve chosen a destination, take it easy and relax into the moment with each other. The best part about hiking is being together with friends and family. Whether you’re stopping for a photo on the bridge or listening to your voices echo back at you from the cave, it just feels good to bond over the natural wonders around you.
Of course, everyone has different experiences and different Sentiments about things. On the last hike I led, my friend and I were enjoying ourselves before we ran into denkimushi aka electric bugs. She forgot her spray, so she kinda… got zapped. She's still a bit mad at me for leading her through that area unprepared, but she'll come around. Probably.
When you finish your hike, whether it’s meditative or energetic, pause for a moment at the Festival of Lights to admire the beauty around you. This tradition helps us remember the dead and celebrate the light. In the evening, there are fireworks, and you can watch the lanterns float along the river. Remember to make a wish for the future at the tanabata tree.
Komorebi Fact: Being aware of yourself and the present moment is super important here. Some people like mindful walks, while others prefer relaxing to traditional Japanese folk music. Find whatever works for you to center yourself.
Yukimatsu
Lots of people come to vacation in Yukimatsu especially. (That’s where all the snow is!) There are a few swanky rentals for out-of-towners since it’s right next to all the action, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find locals here too. Who could stay away from the onsen bathhouse and the snow sports?
I grew up learning to snowboard on the bunny slope here. Of course, I spent a lot of time wiping out at first, but now you can find me up on the mountain for at least a few hours a day! It just became part of my Lifestyle as I made it a habit over time. Now, I can’t imagine a day where I’m not strapped onto my board.
But don’t be intimidated! Skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels are welcome, whether you’re on the bunny slope or one of the four bigger trails. And if that scares you, no problem! Try sledding, too. You can go alone or pair up with another Sim to catch a little air. My mom used to take me when I was a toddler, and it’s one of my fondest memories.
So take some time to have a little fun here. Learn how to start rock climbing at the beginner’s climbing route, or explore a cave on a snowy hike. And once you’re done, and probably chilled to the bone, head over to the onsen for the most relaxing experience in the world. I’m not exaggerating. Plan to spend a few hours here at least. Once you slip into that water, everything kind of… floats away. All your stresses, your fears, your injuries… none of it matters as much in the soothing heat.
Komorebi Fact: We all have our own Lifestyle, and Mt. Komorebi offers something for everyone. Even just looking around in Yukimatsu, you can see Outdoorsy Sims enjoying a hike, Workaholic salarymen glued to their computers, Junk Food Fiends grabbing snacks from vending machines, and Energetic Sims (like me!) flying down the mountain. That which makes you happiest may be just around the corner.
The Summit
I hope you took a moment to check out that beginner’s climbing course in Yukimatsu! If you want to head up to the peak of Mt. Komorebi, you’re going to need those skills. Group excursions usually start at the onsen, but once you get out of that water, you’re in for the trip of a lifetime. Dress warmly and bring a few snacks to tide you over.
Take the gondola up to the top of the ski slopes, where you’ll find the first climbing obstacle. After that, there’s a series of challenges awaiting you. If you’re new to the sport, take the opportunity to rest at the base camps along the way, but if you’ve got the experience, try to explore a little! There are caves and other surprises on the way up. (For instance, you might find a secluded little spot for a quick Woo-Hoo up there—something about life-and-death danger really gets some Sims going. 😉)
Don’t undertake this excursion lightly, though! The weather gets worse the higher you climb, and you may end up caught in a thundersnow storm. Yes, you read that right. They’re intense blizzards that take place in the middle of a thunderstorm. And with the lightning and the booming and the wind… it gets really dangerous while you’re clinging to the side of a cliff for dear life. And if you fall from these heights… it doesn’t bear thinking about. Just be careful.
Finally, once you reach the top, everything seems to stop. I can tell you from experience that standing on that peak, staring out at the other mountains and a sky full of clouds below me, everything makes sense. The people with you make sense. Your journey makes sense. And this town, this world, with its beauty and excitement and peace, makes the most sense of all.

Official Blog: Discover Mountains of Fun in The Sims 4 Snowy Escape
The Sims team has released an official blog for The Sims 4 Snowy Escape Expansion.
Sul sul, Simmers! Welcome to Mt. Komorebi! I’m your local guide, and today, we’re going a bit deeper into the world I love so much. You might have seen it on a map or in a video like the one below, but that stuff just scratches the surface, and I can tell you a lot more!
If you’re moving in or on your way for vacation, I’ve got the perfect plan for you.

Back at it again with a couple more HC prompts, which imma just dump in one, and you can pick which ones you want. Puddles with the kiddos, family baking sessions when both are regressed, Ro wanting attention whilst Logan is reading, so climbing all over his book, how their reactions to new stuffies differ, regressed versus non-regressed birthdays.... Etc... 👍
okokokokok buckle up everyone
Puddles:
this is the only one where i have to be like .. i don't think so :0 see virgil can get very nervous when it rains because he's so anxious about 'is it gonna storm? will there be thunder? will we be hit by lightning? will there be a flood? what if one of us slips and hurts our head??' that he just cannot relax enough to be able to jump around in puddles because 'WHAT IF I SLIP IM GONNA DIE' and the wetness on his skin sets off the wrong sensory feelings so jumping in muddy puddles is a no for him (as much as he loves peppa pig)
and roman is a fussy little thing, he may not care as much for his appearance when he's small but i think he will still be conscious enough to notice if he gets wet hair and muddy clothes - plus i feel like roman's mood is quite tied to the weather, on dark days he tends to fee a little more gloomy, ao again not sure about this especially if he wouldn't have his baby brother there with him
Baking:
OH BOY so roman is a great cook okay? like chef level he has honed his skills so that he can make romantic meals for handsome princes, but baking? nu uh, too technical, he ain't got time for that. Patton is the baker of the house and makes cookies and cupcakes way too often for Logan's liking (but secretly he loves them of course, he's just concerned for everybody's teeths) but both CGs will cook dinner when the boys are little
When the boys are regressed they're not allowed much in the kitchen anymore. after roman tried to make breakfast in bed for his CGs and started a very small but very real fire he has lost some kitchen rights (ficlet coming to you at some point perhaps) and is not allowed in the kitchen without at least one CG. even if he can switch so quickly between headspaces, he ends up either 1) too stubborn to come out of little space, or 2) a kittle bit clumsy when he comes out of it
but to make up for roman being upset by this slight loss of independence (he is a big kid after all) patton and he do weekly baking sessions! and there's always a theme. most recently they had animal crossing themed cupcakes, a little mermaid themed jello (not technically baking but roman wanted to but little fish gummies in the jelly), and... the next one is a secret because i might put it in chapter 7 (: in fact chapter 7 will feature the first instance of this tradition!!
virgil has pyrophobia (fear of fire) and so is never keen to be in the kitchen while there's food preparation going on (but he was allowed to help with the under the sea jello!!) so roman and pattons baking sessions are an excuse for mama and baby bonding time! the tradition didn't start until after virgil's separation anxiety from patton had eased up a little so luckily there's barely any tears
mama baby bonding time consists of but is not limited to: sitting on mama's lap, doing puzzles together, (vee trying to suck on a puzzle piece and crying when he's told not to), mama reading baby books to vee, vee touching all the textures and flaps in the baby books, snuggles
Ro wanting attention while Lo is reading:
this is 1000% canon!! later in the series logan will often be at work in his room and have the boys with him because patton is busy with something or another. they realise they really do need to keep working for thomas' sake but manage to integrate the boys' littlespaces into it. Eg. logan dangling baby plastic keys from one hand to amuse girgil while he's typing with the other
but when it's quiet time, when patton is in virgil's room because the baby is having a nap and papa wants to watch over him, when roman hasn't been little because he's been working or simply not in the mood earlier that day, when logan is just chilling, just reading a stephen hawking book in the living room, when he's literally just vibing, roman can and will launch himself into logan's lap sending the book flying and logan isn't allowed to tell him off because 'I'm little now! i want attention now!! hi mom!!!!'
New stuffies:
AHHHHHHHHH this this this is so so cute!!
roman never used to care much for soft toys before okay? before he was ever a little sure he appreciated disney action figures (he used them to block out scenes he wrote for theatre productions and screenplays and fanfiction) sure he always had a soft spot for Mrs Fluffybottom his childhood toy, but she always just sat on a shelf, he never fet the need to cuddle her or play with her
but when he realises he's little, when he starts playing with vee, when he sees how much vee cares about his soft animals, when patton and logan buy him a present to welcome him to the littlespace family and it's a golden teddy bear (soon to be named Aladdin) with big brown beady eyes and a satin crimson bow around its neck? yeah big kids love stuffies too
and now whenever roman is gifted a new toy (soft or otherwise) he essentially gets the zoomies!!! his brain is going a million miles a minute with all the game possibilities and with the excitement of NEW PRESENT!!! and with the happiness that his caregivers thought about him and he's been a good enough boy to deserve gifts?? yeah he's so so so excited he canNOT stand still he runs around the house for a whole hour flinging his new toy around (yeah he's a bit rough with them and there's been more than one torn limp or loose eye but he doesn't care it just shows how much they're loved!)
Now virgil: this boy is very very very emotionally attached to his stuffies. when he was a "dark side" he couldn't have much soft stuff because it just went against everything the household stood for and he couldn't risk the others finding out about how not-scary he really was, but he allowed himself a single stuffed rabbit that was easy to hide and that he loved with all of his being. it was his security blanket and his one item that could offer him comfort in a oanic attack and his only posession that he felt was true to him and not true to the scary facade he put up to scare thomas and the "light sides" into listening to him
without spoiling anything, that bunny was left in that house when he moved to the "light sides"
and in his new home virgil started collecting soft toys whenever he needed comfort. everytime he felt unwanted, every time he had an anxiety attack, everytime there was a thunderstorm predicted for the next week he would get himself a new soft toy because that was the only way he knew to comfort himself. needless to say he's got a pretty big collection now. you might think he became desensitized to new toys because of how many times he had gotten himself a new one, and you might be partly right.
that is until for the first time ever he is given a stuffie by someone else... when logan buys him a soft toy in apology for accidentally revealing his regression to everyone ((yes i am writing this fic!))
it wasn't really logan's fault, virgil should have been more aware he should have been more careful he should have hidden it all better but the logical side was guilt-ridden nonetheless. virgil hadn't expected much to be honest, the sincere apology was enough for him
but when logan blushed and shyly opened a box and handed him a black cat stuffie? virgil had to fight very very hard not to outright sob on the spot. he simply took it, thanked logan shakily, and prayed that logan didn't point out the fact that tears were falling onto the fluff of his new stuffed friend Jiji
now whenever he gets a new toy it's different than before - it's not because he's upset and needs comfort, it happens less often now but it's more special, it could be for a holiday or as a way of saying he's been very sweet or just because patton simply couldn't resist this one because look at its cute lil eyes! but each and everytime he knows when he is handed a new toy by one of his family members it really means 'i love you'
and he buries his face in its softness - it used to be to hide his tears, but now he just can't help but squeeze it tight and close and let the feeling of love wash over him
Birthdays:
yknow that episode of steven universe where steven wears a regal cape and a golden crown? yeah that's roman whether he's little or not
seriously this kid is very much the 'it's my birthweek!' type
lots of singing, lots of 'but i'm the birthday boy!!' to try to get thtings he really shouldn't be getting (like a third cookie) (and yes patton caves every single time) (patton is eventually banned from making decisions on romans behalf during his "birthweek")
there's not much difference at all between little romans birthday and big romans birthday, he's just an excitable boy whether he's a kiddo or not - this may or may not make the caregivers question whether maybe he actually was a little before virgil's regression was revealed
(irrelevant but patton definitely makes the pun 'you're a little? a little what? finish your sentences silly billy!')
virgil hates his birthday. hates it.
too much attention, too many things that could go wrong, too much pressure on it being a good day. what if his anxiety is bad that day? what if he doesn't want everyone watching him open presents? what if he's genuinely terrified that people think walking towards him with a big grin, singing at him, and carrying a cakeful of literal fire is a somehow a fun activity??
when he first moved into the house he made it very clear that he does not have a birthday so don't even try to throw him a party
naturally roman and patton were devastated, but after a failed attempt at getting virgil to enjoy his birthday they obeyed logan's request that they not try to push the idea on virgil any further
but the first birthday after they become a little family, it's a bit different
they don't push it, not at first, but virgil does wake up to patton already in his room and cooing at him adoringly , immediately sending him into his regressed headspace
then he's given a new soft toy. that wasn't so bad
then roman let him choose what disney film they watched. that wasnt bad either
then logan cuddled him for an hour and they might have fallen asleep together not noticing the smell of vanilla coming from the kitchen
then there was a new paci, a new rattle, another new soft toy, and cake cut up into tiny squares so he could nibble on it with his fingers
there was no loud singing no big surprises no bright lights or fire or anything else that he hated about birthdays
there was only love and toys and comfort. so virgil really didn't mind birthdays much after that
#wowie wow wow wow that was a lot i hope this is ok??#long post#all caps#food tw#pyrophobia tw#little/big concepts#agere virgil#little virgil#little roman#cg logan#cg patton#asks#anon#agedre roman

Survey #350
“let’s play a love game, play a love game / do you want love, or you want fame? / are you in the game?”
Who was your first good kiss with? Jason. Would you kiss this person again? I know I fucking would and I hate it more than I could possibly express. Name something that is on your bedroom wall? Lots of artwork, mostly of meerkats. What accessory do you want in your bedroom? I need another desk to put stuff on. If you could paint your walls any color what would it be? Something pastel. Maybe like, peach. Soft and warm and would really bring light to the room. What does your phone case look like? It's just this boring purple one that came with the phone. What do you take the most pictures of? My camera roll says my pets, hahaha. What is the point of Twitter for you? Liking Mark's shit lmao. What does your planner look like? I don’t have one. If you get into an argument what is it usually about? My anxiety, I think. What are you always in the mood for? Ummm probably a car ride where I can control the music in the passenger seat. It is very, very rare I'll turn that opportunity down. What’s the last emergency you dealt with? I don't really know; I'm thankfully not in these situations very much, especially when you're cooped up at home. I probably haven't been actually engaged in an emergency since I had to call 911 for my mom before she found out about her cancer. She was basically immobile from agony in her abdomen. Do you have a son? I'm perfectly happy without a son, or kids period. Are you married? No. Have you ever worn a suit? I haven't. Have you ever had to call 911? Twice for Mom. How many keys are on your key-ring? Just one for the house. What’s the last thing you created? An RP post would count as art creation, I'd say. Who are your closest friends? Sara, Girt, and uh... Well, they might be it as far as friends I consider truly close to me. I have a few other people I consider good friends, but we're just not like... on that "close" level, you know? Lisa is maybe another, and Lyndsey perhaps, both WoW friends. Are you ready to have a family? I hate that "have a family" tends to mean get married and have kids, which I'm guessing is what you're implying. If that's the case, no, given I don't want kids and am not fit to get married right now. I'm not even with anyone. I'm content right now with just living with my mom and my two pets, who are children well enough to me. Have you ever taken a DNA test? No. Do you have a family cemetery? No. Would you say you have a high sex drive or not so much? *shrugs* I think it's pretty normal. How do you feel about swallowing pills? What do you mean how do I "feel" about it? I just do it if I need to. What animal is the scariest in your opinion? Some kind of bug, probably. Giant centipedes creep me the fuck out, for one, and I've heard their bite is incredibly painful. I've also always been very afraid of Australia's funnel web spiders since watching some show on Animal Planet when I was younger; I think it scarred me for life, aha. And let's not forget the murder hornets. No thnx, rather die. :') Have you ever questioned your sanity? Way more than once, my friend. How do you feel about people wearing fur coats? Are you for or against it? I am VIOLENTLY against it unless it is for survival in extreme climates and you don't have access to other material. That aside, there is NO way you could possibly convince me that it's okay to wear the fur of something once living on yourself for ~fashion~. What’s the worst thing a friend has either done or said to you? Let's not go here. What’s fake about you? Like extensions, fake nails, botox etc. Nothing. If you got the chance, would you audition for a reality show? No. Have you ever gotten into a Facebook fight? Haha, yeah. Favorite flavor of jelly bean? Probably watermelon or strawberry. I'm not a massive jellybean fan. Do you use Tinder? If yes, have you ever met up with someone you matched? I've never tried it, no. What book/movie has made you cry the hardest? Either The Notebook or Titanic. Something you feared as a kid but don’t anymore? Thunderstorms. What’s your skincare routine? I don't really have one. Just wash it with water in the shower and then use a washcloth when I feel the need. Would you rather have a snake or a tarantula as a pet? I want both, but I prefer snakes. What is something you are NOT looking forward to? I both am and am not looking forward to my second Covid vaccine because it's notoriously worse than the first; the only bright side to it is that after the potential side effects blow over, I'm job hunting. What do you usually do right when you wake up? Check the time on my phone. Would you rather eat your pizza cold or hot? Hot, but I like both. Who taught you how to swim? Dad, I think? Can you do push-ups? No. Do you like Doritos? Yesssss. Who is the closest friend that you live by? I don't know. Have you ever banged your head against something? I've had two concussions before, so, y'know. Have you ever jumped on a trampoline? Yeah, I loved that as a kid. Do you like watching scary movies? Yeah. Has anyone ever told you that you have a big butt? No, considering I have like no ass, rip. Has one of your friends ever tried to "hook you up?" Ugh, yes. Do you prefer landmarks or street names when being given directions? Landmarks, by a mile. Although, I'm super bad with directions, so it probably wouldn't really matter much. Do you read the prologues in the beginnings of books? Yeah, you got to. Does your house have more than one fireplace? No. What was your favourite gym class moment? The one and only thing I liked about gym as a kid was when you took one of those rainbow tarps and made like, an air bubble underneath to make this awesome dome everyone sat in. Ya missed out if you didn't do that. Do you think that ocean boardwalks are fun? Yeah. Do you dread when people ask you to sign their yearbooks? Not at all; I was always flattered, knowing they cared enough to want mine. Apple Jacks: yay or nay? I looove those. Do you have a favorite Scooby-Doo movie? Haha yeah, I think it's the second one? Such iconic scenes. It's the one with the Mary Jane girl that Shaggy liked... oh, jokes that went over your head as a kid. Who were your last 3 Facebook messages from and what do they say? I'm too lazy to list the convos themselves, but the people involved are my friends Chelsea and Ian, as well as a friend's mother. Do you turn your phone off at night when you go to sleep? No. It's always on vibrate, and I just turn the brightness way down. What is the sexual orientation of the last person you talked to? She's straight. What’s your favourite hairstyle on the opposite sex? Don't you fucking dare laugh, emo hair is A++. Has anyone ever played a prank on you? What happened? Not a big one, no. Do you like the Silent Hill movies? Do I?! I love the first one (though for a while I wasn't very happy they swapped the lead role from Harry to his wife), and while the second is literal trash story-wise and it's ALL over the damn place, I still enjoy it with just how much I adore SH as a whole. What movie scared you the most out of any other movies? The Rite, because the concept of being raped and impregnated by a demon is fucking horrifying to me. Have you ever wanted to be on American Idol? When was this? Nah. Name 5 things you don’t believe in. 1.) "Everything happens for a reason;" 2.) karma; 3.) destiny/fate; 4.) psychics, fortune tellers, all that; and 5.) luck, at least in the sense of someone having set "good" or "bad" luck. If you could have any friend that you’ve lost back, who would you pick? Probably Megan. If you have pets, who normally puts food and water in their dish? Me for both of them. Do you organize the pictures on your computer into different folders or are they all just under “My Pictures”? I have folders. Do you think if someone is in a relationship, that it is acceptable to have sleepovers with other people of their preferred sex? Eh, nah, that feels a bit far to me. I am very firmly for friends still being able to hang out even if they're each other's preferred gender, but a sleepover sounds a bit too intimate, even without sharing a bed. Would you shoot a gun if given the chance? If you’ve shot a gun before, how many different types of guns have you shot? No. I'm very intimidated by guns and nearly shook when I merely handed a friend his (not for anything bad, he just carried it with him when he goes out), and I've got noooo plans of holding one again unless my life depends on it. Do you feel uncomfortable sharing things like artwork or poetry you’ve written? Is it because you don’t think it’s good enough to show off or because it’s too personal? You. Have. Zero. Idea. It's for both reasons, and it's far more severe in person. Online, I actually don't mind much, oddly enough... I can't quite pin down why. Do you have any siblings you absolutely despise? Why do you despise them? No. Do knives scare you? Is it from watching scary movies? Knives scare me like five times more than guns. Scary movies have nothing to do with it, though. They're just so sharp and the idea of being stabbed by one is terrifying. As someone with a history of self-mutilation too (not with knives, but I've thought about it and once planned to slit my throat with one, but Mom stopped me), they just make me incredibly uncomfortable to the point I can barely hold a "real" knife to just slice food. Have you ever climbed a chain-link fence? Many times. What is your LEAST favorite Disney animated movie? That I've seen, uhhhhh... I don't know man, there are way too many Disney movies lmao. Who was the last person’s house you went to besides your own? My sister's. On YouTube, who are two people you find hilarious? I'm just counting GameGrumps as one, and then you can't forget Shane Dawson, regardless of the controversy. He probably made me laugh more than any other YouTuber. Do you shave your pits? Yeah. Do you know anyone who has been on life support, and survived? I don't think so. Besides the USA, what is your favorite country? I'm not nearly informed enough about foreign countries' politics and laws and mannerisms to have a favorite. Would you rather go to Europe or Asia? Europe. Would you rather go to Africa or Australia? Africa. Would you rather go to Mexico or Canada? Canada. Do you think emo/scene hair is attractive? I love emo and scene hair, don't @ me, it's cute as fuck. Have you ever seen a ghost orb picture? Lots, actually, at one of my old houses that I totally know was haunted. Do you think abortion should be illegal? NO. You would NOT end abortions. You would end SAFE abortions. Do any of your pets have strange habits? Explain? Venus, my ball python, is extremely odd with food to the point I sometimes worry about her, but she's always been this way and is healthy, so I guess it's nothing really worth fretting over. Anyway, when I place her rat in her terrarium, she gets excited first and will pretty much frantically examine her surroundings, like slithering around everywhere, and even when she has clearly found the rat (she'll even prod it with her snout), she usually won't immediately eat. She just like... sits there and has to continue to verify for ten minutes that it's food. I know it's thawed perfectly, btw. So anyway, THAT'S weird... As for Roman, dear god, that cat's just weird, lmao. Especially in the morning, he's very hyper and will bolt around the house sometimes, he "plays" with nothing all the time, he "meerkat"s at nothing that I can nothing, etc. etc. etc. He's a weirdo lol. Have you ever told an extremely inappropriate joke? Oh god, I said something really inapprops once when my friend Chelsea startled me. I won't be repeating it lmao. Who in life have you felt the strongest need to protect? Sara, I think. Who have you most feared in your life? My dad. He doesn't scare me anymore, but he did. What was the quickest friendship you ever made? Oh idk. What is the worst word anyone ever used to describe you? "Martyr." And not the kind that dies for their beliefs. It hurt me so badly to know someone thought of me that way, and I'll probably never let it go. If you have any pets, were they adopted from the humane society? No. Roman is one of the billion kittens born to the cats my sister's in-laws have, and Venus is from a ball python breeding business in Florida called The Gourmet Rodent (they sell f/t rodents too, obvs) Do you like home design, like picking out paint colors and furniture? Not really. My grandmother though, whew, that was her calling for sure. Have you seen any of the old James Bond movies? Nope. List all of your features that you have ever gotten compliments on: My hair, my eyes, my tattoos, my hands, I think my nose, my dimples, my smile, and my boobs lmao. Have you ever been in a hot air balloon? And if not, would you ever want to go in one? I haven't. I think it'd be kinda cool, but they seem too easy to fall out of, and I'm afraid of heights. I'd probably go in one if given the opportunity. Do you have any stains on your shirt currently? No, but there are two small rips. It's just an old tank top. Do you listen to local bands? No. Not that I'm opposed, I just don't know of any I really enjoy. Do you watch YouTube videos often? Many, many daily. Do your parents fight? Do they even talk at all? They're divorced; they used to fight a lot when they were together. Now they only talk if they have reason to. Have you ever watched a movie that's in a complete different language, so you had to read sub-titles? No. Do people with yellow teeth disgust you? Dude, fuck off, no. My teeth are kinda yellow, and I'm extremely self-conscious about it, so seriously fuck this question. You never know for sure why someone's teeth may seem yellowish. Do you drink alcohol on New Year’s Eve? Usually a drink or two. Do you wear rings? I always have two on, yeah. Are you hungry right now? No, I literally just ate a breakfast bowl. Have you ever tried smoking a cigarette? No; I haven't the slightest interest in doing so.

『 finn cole. twenty-two. cismale. he/him. 』 oh heavens, is that ROMAN COSTA from SYCAMORE WAY i see roaming around mapleview? minnie may’s always calling them -CONNIVING & -UNBRIDLED. i happen to think they’re not that bad! they’re a pretty cool UNEMPLOYED and every time i’ve seen them, they’ve always been +STAUNCH & +ASTUTE. i hope i see them around again! 『 jean. 22. est. she/her. 』
hi squad , hope you’re all having a solid day <3 , i’m jean & this is my brand spankin’ new baby boy roman . i’m throwing a few random tidbits and things below but will be writing up a full blown bio once i have some more time to rly dive in . come thru & let’s party ? PLOT ?
tw : addiction !
he’s the son of STEFANO ( his intro here ) , rock star & basically best bud . he has two half-siblings now ( both just babies ) that his almost new mom left @ their doorstep for his dad to raise ( and he likes to think he helps out a bit too ).
his biological mother left him and his old man when he was born , not knowing her at all ( and yes , resentful for it ). his dad’s recent fiance ( ex - fiance ) also left the family behind for whatever reason without a trace so yes - you guessed it , roman has mommy issues / abandonment issues galore :-)
growing up as the son to a famous musician had its perks ( the money of COURSE & heading on tour with the coolest dude ever , the social media fame , people treating you differently ) , but it also had some downsides ( the money , the fame ( paps are the Worst !!! ) , and people treating you differently ). funny how those are so similar . although stefano did / does his best as a dad to keep things as normal as possible - it’s somewhat out of his control . roman felt some pressure to act a certain way ( especially if the paparazzi was around - picture a lil kid with cameras flashing in his eyes ok ) , on social media as that came with a built-in following , and he never truly knew who to trust as they got close to him ( a) because of the mommy issues probably, afraid of close relationships & b) are they in it for him or for the money / fame / etc ? )
growing up in the world’s greatest city ( new york ), meant that he had access to everything at his fingertips . and he loved it . a bit of an adrenaline junkie , he loved the excitement , craved the flashing lights when he left & never once had a dull moment . ( except for when he slept in until ... noon , sometimes ). new york perhaps did make him grow up a bit quicker than most though , and roman found himself mixing with some of the wrong crowds / some of the older crowds while he was just shy of a teen . at this point , the alcohol & drugs didn’t seem major as he was still able to keep his average grades up & be the great son / brother he was expected to be - but during college ( he stayed in nyc and went to nyu ) began his downfall of reliance and commitment to drugs . he became more than just the life of the party , and instead , unhealthy + dangerous - to himself and those around him . you see , his father and family moved down to his soon to be absent mother’s hometown - mapleview , and roman obviously chose to stay in school , to stay in his home - new york . who would want to move to a place in the middle of nowhere that has the name maple in it ? and with his dad’s fiance who he was never all too found of ? anyway . hitting rock bottom felt repetitive & with his father away , it was all too easy to hide the regretful mornings & flunking grades . UNTIL a wild night turned into one with roman thrown into jail with one phone call . after his court ordered rehab & probation ( still on probation tbh ) , roman and his father decided that it’d be best if he moved down to mapleview for a bit after all . ( i wouldn’t say he’s the happiest & it’s p clear that he’s on outsider .... but he’s making the best of it ! plus it seems he came back at the perfect time - now his father being the sole caretaker of the babies . ) he’s been here now for about 6-7 months .
personality wise , i’d say he’s a bit harsh , definitely aware of who he is & a bit cocky . he’s extremely sarcastic / snarky ( i like to think a bit like tony stark tbh ) & doesn’t take all too much seriously . on the bright side , he is loyal to a fault and would do absolutely anything for his half-siblings & especially his father . probably the first to throw a punch in a fight that he knows he’ll lose . he’s intelligent ( though he didn’t get the musical skills that his father has ) , and is able to read people pretty well . he’s blunt , but hardly means to be rude ( even tho it may come off as such ) . roman’s curious by nature & will ask questions that may come off as judgmental ... basically know what he says ≠ what he means , but will still just laugh it off without apology if they’re offended . he’s also ... fun , courageous ! and willing to do anything to get the adrenaline his body craves .
some headcanons ! loves : thunderstorms , rolled cigarettes , morning sun , good cell service , new sneakers , 90s grunge & euro-dance music , new york sports , going live on instagram , sunglasses , fast cars . // hates : his bad eyesight , shy people , littering , the smell of gasoline , long lines , flip-flops , skiing , cracking knuckles , singing shows , man-buns .
wanted :
the next-door neighbor ( TAKEN BY OPEN )
the drug dealer ( TAKEN BY OPEN )
good influence ( TAKEN BY OPEN )
the previous boss ( TAKEN BY OPEN )
when roman first got to mapleview , this person hired him graciously . unfortunately , due to whatever circumstances , also had to fire him just a few short months later .
the friends with benefits ( TAKEN BY OPEN )
can have multiple of these tbh , with mommy issues , i assume he’s a bit all over the place in this department .
the enabler ( TAKEN BY OPEN )
this person would be somewhat of a bad influence on roman , especially since he’s still on probation . maybe wanting to take him out to bars / clubs / for a drink . or just doing things that aren’t on the ~legal side of the world .
the enemy ( TAKEN BY OPEN )
can have multiple , of course !
the childhood friend ( TAKEN BY OPEN )
if anyone is from nyc :~)
the challenger ( TAKEN BY OPEN )
someone else with a sharp mouth, who refuses to accept any of his shit. catch them arguing or fighting every time they’re in a room together. it’s always been that way.
the match ( TAKEN BY OPEN )
tinder plot !
the baby-sitter ( TAKEN BY OPEN )
the person that helps watch the twins when dad / roman are unable to .
the user ( TAKEN BY OPEN )
someone that’s using him for something , whether that be to get closer to his father / his studio , for the money / fame , literally anything .
the heartache ( TAKEN BY OPEN )
a relationship where the fell hard & fast and of course it went south fast .
the adventure sidekick ( TAKEN BY OPEN )
gimmie those 3am adventures !
the secret ( TAKEN BY OPEN )
for whatever reason , the two have to keep their relationship / them hanging out a secret .
ALL & EVERYTHING !

Running with the Devil
Kat too in a deep breath as she stepped onto the elevator. This was going to be her first team meeting as the Black Widow. Her life had changed so much in the last year. Went from being a normal twenty-something woman trying to figure out where she belongs into the world. Then her life was rocked when the truth about her family came to light. Kat knew what she had to do then, and she began to train. Now she would dawn the red hourglass that was her mothers. The door started to close but was stopped by a hand. The door opened up to reveal the last person she wanted to see, James. He gave her a little smirk and slinked into the elevator.
“Hello, darling, are you ready for your first team meeting.” Kat rolled her eyes. Why did he have to be such a prick sometimes? She looked over at him and he was staring blankly at the wall. His back was perfectly straight like the soldier he was. The shield engulfed both of his shoulders since he was much slimmer than his dad. She trailed her eyes down to see his sleeves were rolled up to the elbow. The veins in his arms snaked up to the end of the fabric leaving her memorized. She wondered what it would be like.
“Kat.” James snapped his fingers in front of her face pulling her out of her trace. “This is stopped. You are going to miss the meeting if you don’t get off.” She collected her composure and followed behind him.
The hallways were long in the compound with many different doors and secret passageways. Unlike all her friends Kat didn’t grow up getting into trouble by sneaking into the wrong room because they were playing hide and seek. She looked around taking in the sights and memories that scattered the walls as they walked. On the left was Steve Roger’s shield. On the right was a photograph of the original six Avengers. Kat stopped looking at the photograph and smiled. Steve and Tony standing next to each other with Tony placing bunny ears over his head. They were so in love even if they didn’t know it yet. Then next to them was Thor holding her mother in a bridal style. She was flicking off the camera with a big grin on her face. Clint and Bruce were next. Clint was trying to jump onto Bruce’s back, was failing miserably. She placed a finger over Clint missing him every day.
Kat’s Uncle Clint had died after a mission had gone sour well what she was told was that he died in a car accident. She remembers she was only eight standing next to her Pops as her mother fell to her knees at the only man, she called brother, casket. She had never seen her mom be as broken as she was that day. Natasha was strong and didn’t break easily but even Bucky couldn’t comfort her.
“Yeah, I miss him too, but we need to go. Sam doesn’t like it when people are late.” He laid a hand on her shoulder, but she didn’t move. This was the first time she was able to see how her family really was. The heroes they were.
“Few more minutes.” She whispered turning to look at him. “Please.” He nodded staying right beside her. Their hands glazed against one another. They both felt it but refused to acknowledge it.
“You’re late. I’m ashamed of both of you especially you James.” James dropped his head and apologize.
“It won’t happen again, but Sam where is everyone else. I thought this was a team meeting.” He gestured for them to sit down and pulled files that surrounded them. Kat looked around not understanding much that was on them, but she did understand one symbol and that symbol was Hydra. She reached out and pulled the file down closer.
“Sam, are we going to fight Hydra.”
“Yes, you two are going on a mission together to retrieve classified information that Hydra has.” James jumped up and slammed a fist against the table. His nostrils flared with anger.
“No, that would be a suicide mission. I’m not going in there with Kat. She is untrained and barely knows what she is doing. She’s going to get herself killed.” Kat glared at him out of disbelief.
“Well, I don’t want to go on a mission with you either Mr. America.”
“It’s Captain America.” He shot back.
“Whatever, last time I check the last mission you went on was a complete failure. Also, you are new to this hero thing too.” She huffed.
“Last time I check I grew up with this. I have been training since I was fourteen. I have been on tons of missions for two years of my life.” He got closer to her. They were nosed to nose at this point. He was about a foot taller than her, but she could hold her own. Kat wasn’t about to back down.
“James, you must forget that I was raised by the best assassins in the world. I may not have been raised in the superhero world but I was raised to be strong. Also, I have a black belt in karate.” She grabbed his right arm spinning him around and pinning him down to the table. She kicked his legs out and moved a knee to sit right onto the family jewels. She leaned down close to his ear. She could feel the shock wither through his body. “So, I can kick your ass if I want to. Don’t underestimate me, again.” James didn’t know to be angry or impressed. Well, he was a little angry this woman he knew to be nothing but miss stuck up wannabe had potential. She might be even better than him, but he would never admit it.
“Okay, that’s enough. You leave in twenty minutes. Go pack whatever you will need and be ready at the helipad.”
“So, have you heard from Arne lately.” Kat paused and looked at James with a glare.
“No, why you ask?” Which was the truth? Neither one of them had tried to speak to each other after she got on the plane. No phone calls. No texts. It was best like this she thought. Arne wanted a way out of his father’s shadow, and she wanted to step right into her mother’s. Kat couldn’t drag him into this.
“I haven’t heard from him since you came back home.” Kat softens her look. What did he mean he hasn’t spoken to Arne in over a year? They were best friends. “What are you talking about?” James shrugged his shoulders.
“I texted him the night before you came home. Then after that nothing. What happened while you were in California?” Everything happened. She was her happiest there. Every night when she closed her eyes, she can see him twirling her around on the beach. Their laugher was so loud that it put them in their own little world. He would pull her close and gently kiss her.
“You love him, don’t you?” She opened her eyes and touched her cheek not realizing that a tear had slipped away. Kat looked at James and she never seen the way he was looking at her before. He was good having many masks but this time they were all gone. He looked heartbroken like someone had just killed his dog.
“No, and why would you care? Jealous or something.” At that question, the mask was back.
“Or something.” Yeah, never had the guts to tell you. James adjusted his belt and walked head of her stopping at a door. It said supply closet, but he knew better.
“Forget it, we have a mission to complete.”
Kat rolled her eyes. She wasn’t going to worry about James’ feelings too much. He had his chance along time ago but he’s a coward no matter how much he put up a stern front. In the room was a row of computers each one-off except one at the very end. Kat ran ahead of him even though he tried stopping her. This was easy, plug in the USB drive and get out.
“Stop, this seems way to easy. This could be a trap, Kat.” She waved him off and got down to business. Right, when she plugged the drive in an alarm went off.
“Shit!”
“I told you. Let’s go.” James tried pulling her out of the room, but she wouldn’t budge. This was her first mission and she was going to complete it. The screen said that it was halfway done, they could actually pull this off.
“Mr. America, go guard the door and I will finish this.” James glared at her not liking this plan one bit. Then she looked up at him with her pleading blue eyes and he agreed. Damn this girl was going to get herself killed. He went and stood by the door waiting for someone to come. This alarm went off over a half-hour ago and not one goon had come yet. Something wasn’t right. He banged on the door. “Hurry up we need to go now.” Kat swung the door open. She gave him a cheeky smile and dangled the drive in front of his nose.
“What are you waiting for we got to go.” She rushed down the hall while he just looked at her perplexed. Scratched what he said early. She is going to get him killed. Kat ran and ran looking for an exit but no such luck. Everything was either a dead end or locked down. James was right something weird was going on. Someone by now had to try to stop them. Then she halted. Kat couldn’t believe what she was seeing. It was her sister, Anastasia. Her eyes were ghost-like staring into Kat’s soul. There was no recognition.
“Ana, it’s me, Katrina.” She didn’t move just kept staring forward. Kat started to move forward but she felt a hand on her shoulder stopping her.
“Kat, that’s not her. We have to be careful.” She jerked him away. He didn’t understand that was her baby sister. She basically helped raise her. All the bedtime stories flashed before her eyes. Holding Ana when she was scared of thunderstorms or if there was a monster in the closet.
“Ana, look at me. I’m your sister. It’s your Катрина.” Kat stepped closer and was only a few feet from her. If she wanted to, she could outstretch her arms and hug her. She stepped closer and then Ana pulled a gun out, still didn’t say anything. All of the doors around them opened up to revealed Hydra agents. There were probably at least thirty of them but all she cared about was her sister.
“Kat get close to me. There’s too many so we need a plan.” She looked over at him with determination in her eyes. Then back at the spot, her sister was, and Ana was gone. Kat ran straight to the first door that was available.
James watched as Kat ran out of the room. Fuck, they were going to die. He made his way over to the door she slipped out of but was stopped by agents. Well, let’s see if this training worked. He through his shield knocking some of them down but they still didn’t stop.
Kat ran and ran. She had to find Ana. She had to. Then luck prevailed.
“Put the gun down.”
“No! I have a mission to complete. “Ana fired but the bullet missed.
“Ana, listen to me. We can take you home. You can come home.” She fired again but missed her.
“I don’t know you and that’s not my name. This is my home!” She shouted. She rubbed both hands to her face like she was trying to fight the noise that was in her head. Kat could see a flicker in her eyes. A flicker of realization. Then it was gone.
“Your name is Anastasia Maria Barnes. You are my sister. Your favorite color is purple, and you hate pineapple on your pizza. You still believe in Santa Clause. “Ana fired a shot again. It was blocked by James’s shield. Kat turned around for the first time she was glad to see James. He through the shield once again knocking Ana down. Kat ran to her and pulled her into her arms.
“Kat, back away. That’s not Ana. She will kill you.”
“She’s my sister,” Kat yelled. A second later a shot went off that rang in James’ ears. The world stood still; his world stood still.
“Noooooo!” James fell to his knees as he watched Kat fall. Blood soaking around her. She tilted her head to look at him. Begging him to save her and then eyes closed. Ana ran off too scared to understand what she had just done. James ran to Kat and pulled her close to his chest.
“No, stay with me. You can’t die like this.” He pulled his jacket off and pressed it to the wound. He had to stop the bleeding. She couldn’t die. He was supposed to protect her. He promised to protect Kat.
“Help!” James rushed in with Kat slumped in his arms. She was barely breathing and losing a lot of blood. One of the doctors that were supplied for the compound rushed trying to take her out of his arms, but he wouldn’t let go. James needed to know that Kat was going to be okay. He couldn’t live with himself if she died and worst because he wasn’t able to protect her. James pulled her in closer as the doctor showed him where to put her down. James laid her down gently and the doctors pushed him out of the way causing him to leave the room. The doctor locked the door. All James could do was watch as they tried to save her.
James slid down the wall and sat feeling a wave of tiredness rush over him. He looked down at his uniform not being able to tell the difference between his blood and Kat’s blood. He checked himself looking for wounds himself but only found some bruises and cuts. He laid his head on the door frame closing his eyes but all he could see was the bullet piercing into Kat’s chest and the pleading in her eyes to save her. A single tear slipped away, and his strong front was gone.
“Where is she? Where is my daughter?” The door to the emergency part of the hall slammed open to reveal Bucky raging with anger. James jolted awake and looked up at the sight of the man he called family. A wave of cold washed over him. Bucky looked like he was the winter solider again which sent fear through James. Bucky looked around wildly until he laid his eyes on James. He went over and hauled James up by the neck of his suit to his feet. James’s heart quicken. There was a pit in his stomach fearing that his Uncle would blame him.
“Where’s Katrina?” Bucky didn’t move from his position just waited for an answer.
“She’s in there. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I tried to protect her.” James calm composure slipped away and his voice broke. Bucky pulled him in tight. Both men shaking as they cried.
“I know you did son. I know you did.” Bucky pulled back and clapped a hand over his nephew’s shoulder. He examined him and saw all of the blood. He saw the bruises and shadows that had form under his eyes. This boy was holding so much in. There was a lot of pain behind his eyes. The kind of pain he saw in Steve’s own eyes. The pain that none of them wanted their children to adore.
Several hours had passed, the doctor came out to tell them what was happening, and it was nothing good. Bucky went into the room, James tried to come with, but Bucky insisted that he would go in first. Bucky needed to go in first. James understood but that didn’t mean it wasn’t driving him crazy not to see Kat. Kat.
Bucky walked into the room and saw his daughter was breathing but asleep. The doctor’s said she wouldn’t be awake for several hours since she lost so much blood. Kat looked so small with her long auburn hair floating around her. Bucky pulled up a chair and picked up her cold hand.
“Hey, baby girl, what did you get yourself into? Gave me and your mom a real scare. She’s out trying to find the bastard that did this to you.” If he only knew the truth. “You have to wake up okay. We can’t lose you too.” He sniffed trying not to cry again. He had to be strong, for his family. Then he heard a knock on the door. He looked up and saw James once again. There was something going on between James and Kat but that was none of Bucky’s business. He could tell by the way James’s eyes darted to Kat as he spoke to Bucky. Never leaving the spot.
“I’m sorry. Pops is here and he wants to talk to you.” Bucky stood up, placing a kiss to the top of Kat’s head, and left. James came to replace him sitting in the same chair. His heart broke seeing her so still.
“I really wish you were cursing me out right now like you always are. Telling me what a jerk I am. That you were fine and that a bullet wound was just a scratch.” He chuckled but then paused as he watched her chest rise and fall without a sign of her waking up. “I’m sorry Kat. I didn’t want you to get hurt because I.” He stopped not wanting to finish that sentence. He stood up and left the room leaving her to her peace.
“Steve, stop. You are telling me that my daughter, my tiny dancer, did this to my other daughter. I knew they were going on a mission, but I didn’t know it was Hydra. Someone should have told me it was hydra!” Bucky’s voice raised with each word. This is why Natasha and him decided to get out of the game. To hang up their knives and guns for playdates and recitals.
“Hey, I didn’t know myself. I haven’t been in the complete loop for a long time. Bruce just told me because my son might have been hurt.” Bucky pushed his hair out of his face. His hair was now much longer then what he normally kept it. It reminded him too much of the winter solider days but now it was a little greyer.
“I’m sorry. It’s just a lot to handle. We didn’t choose the life we had. Then we both tried to make sure that our children didn’t have to deal with the pain and death. No amount of protection could because Hydra will always find me and hurt the people I care about. Anastasia is brainwashed and Katrina won’t wake up. She almost died. I’m going after them, Steve. I’m going to get them son of a bitches.” Bucky began to walk away without another word. Steve grabbed hold of Bucky’s arm making him stop in his track. He grimaced by the touch. He panned his eyes up at Steve’s seeing the pleading look in his best friend’s eyes. Bucky relaxed a little.
“You aren’t going out there alone.” Bucky shook his head.
“I can’t ask you to do this. You hung up the shield for a good reason and I can’t bring you back in.” Steve nodded.
“Yes, you can because they hurt my family too. James was there, and your daughters are my nieces. Now suit up.”
James stood in the training room not knowing what to do. These Hydra goons needed to die. They needed to pay but he needed help. He pulled out his phone and called the one person he knew would help him. He just didn’t know if that person would pick up.
Arne looked at the clock and it read three am. Who the hell would be calling him this late at night? He rolled over and picked up the phone and answered it. He didn’t even bother to read the caller ID.
“Kat’s been shot. You need to come here now.” Arne dropped the phone. His chest burned. No matter how many girls he slept with they weren’t Kat. Tears slipped down his cheeks. He wasn’t there to protect her. He never told her how much he loved her, and she could be dead. Arne picked up the phone once again with rage boiling his blood.
“Who did this?”
“Hydra. I need your help to take them down.” Arne opened the wooden chest at the foot of his bed and pulled out Dainsleif. It was powerful and he promised not to use it. Once it was taken out of it scabbard it must kill a man and where he was going, he hoped he was going to kill many.
“I will be there by sun-up.”

Stormy Season
A part of Seasons, the mage Pidge and dragon familiar Lance AU.
Made as part of a prompt challenge by @hailqiqi and the Pidgance Positivity Discord Server. Lance has a run in with Griffin, Pidge makes an incorrect assumption and is upset about it, a disciplinary action occurs, and soulmates are mentioned.
Final draft is 10 words shy of the 1500 word limit. Score.
~~~~~~
“Pidge,” Lance whispered in her ear. “Pidge, please, I neeeeed it.”
She ignored him, a difficult task with his tiny claws digging anxiously in her skin as he skittered around her shoulders.
Pidge knew exactly what Lance wanted, but she refused to let him have it.
“He has so many,” Lance begged. “He won’t miss one.”
“You already know what the answer is,” she told him. “You can’t just go stealing things, Lance, especially officers in the Guard.”
Pidge returned to her observation of Guard Officer Griffin. He did have an awful lot of medals on his uniform. They glinted in the sun as he laid into a terrified cadet for not having a clean uniform.
“He was a jerk to Keith,” Lance continued.
“You’re a jerk to Keith half the time,” Pidge responded dryly. Her eyes scanned the area and she growled in annoyance. Why had Shiro insisted on meeting here instead of his own shop? Even uniformed mages looked bored at the display of arms.
She hated that it was necessary. At least it made non-magic users feel better amid the recent strange happenings at the Daibazaal border.
“We’re friends. It’s different,” Lance insisted.
“You’re friends since when?” Pidge asked, legitimately curious. “The two of you do nothing but glare and insult each other every time you’re in the same room.”
The entire squad of cadets, including the mages, dropped to the ground on Griffin’s order, doing the first push up out of fifty to come.
A wall came up in front of Lance’s mind and Pidge didn’t press the extent of their bond. If Lance wanted to keep his problem with Keith private then so be it.
He settled down, splayed out around the back of her neck, refusing to think about anything other than how much he wanted one of Griffin’s medals for his hoard.
Pidge didn’t mind so much. Even though his scales were hard, Lance made an acceptable scarf this late in the fall.
“Sorry I’m late.”
Pidge turned around and greeted an apologetic Shiro with a hug.
“It’s fine,” she told him lightly. “I couldn’t get all my shopping in today anyway. Dad is busy with work and Mom is determined to get our new sweaters made. She’s even got Matt helping.”
Shiro laughed and crossed his arms in amusement. “You’re not afraid Matt is going to put a pattern of a peanut on yours, are you?”
“Real funny,” she said, giving him a good glare for extra measure. “As long as you don’t give him the idea. So,” she needed to change the subject, “why the meeting in the city square?”
Takashi Shirogane was a man who wore his emotions on his sleeve. When the subject was unrelated to the events surrounding the curse on his arm, he couldn’t fool a soul. So when his reaction to Pidge’s question was to avoid eye contact and smile, she knew something was up.
“Hunk and Keith kicked me out,” he said with a defeated shrug. “They have a project I’m not allowed to help with.”
Pidge bit the inside of her lip in contemplation. There was nothing either man would ever keep from Shiro. Keith was too close a friend - and Hunk was his familiar! Inklings of suspicion clouded her mind. It wasn’t a birthday or holiday coming up, was it?
“Okay, well, I’ve got the order you wanted,” she told him. “But its at my parents’ place. It’s too big for me to carry. Matt and I should be able to get it over to the shop after a couple of trips, though.”
“No!” Shiro exclaimed abruptly, his eyes wide with panic.
Stunned, Pidge almost wasn’t how to respond.
“I mean, no, it's okay,” he backtracked. “You made all those potions for us, we’ll take care of it. It’s been a while since I’ve had a good chat with your family anyway. Don’t make more work for yourself - take Lance and go enjoy some time off.”
Pidge bore a glare into her friend, tilting her head as if looking at him from a different angle might help shed some light on the situation. “What’s going on, Shiro. You’re acting weirder than usual.”
“Nothing!” he insisted. “Hunk and Keith are just super busy. You and Lance - “ He paused abruptly. “Where’s Lance?”
A sting of pain hit quickly. No matter how busy her friends were, they always made time to see her while she was in town. Were they upset she wasn’t visiting enough? The feeling vanished as soon as it come as she realized Lance’s familiar weight was gone. He never strayed far from her side in town -
A gunshot broke through the ambient crowd noise and took the air out of her lungs. Her heart stopped when she caught sight of Lance’s small blue figure climbing around the body of Officer Griffin, no doubt examining each and every medal.
“Oh Ancients, no,” Pidge groaned, and ran towards the scuffle.
~~~~
“I’m sorry.”
“Too late,” Pidge said, arms crossed in a huff.
“I couldn’t help it. Those were the shiniest medals I’ve ever seen,” Lance said in his defense. He sighed in defeat, flopping down on the grass with his arms flailed out. “At least he was decent enough to tell me what polish he uses.”
Still banned from her childhood home on risk of seeing the sweaters before they were finished, and apparently unable to go to Shiro’s shop, the two had taken residence in the city garden. Absentmindedly she reached out to a rose. It blossomed a deep red in thanks for her magic.
“You were lucky that’s all you came away with,” Pidge said angrily. “What if you’d gotten seriously hurt?”
“But I’m not?” Lance shrugged. “I love you, Pidge. I’d never do something to make you really upset. You’re my best friend, my soulmate.”
Pidge tried to hide her blush by joining Lance on the grass, enjoying the view of the cloudless sky. The last thing she wanted was to fall to his sweet words so easily. “I am upset,” she admitted. “But not just with you. It seems like no one wants to see us.”
Lance rolled over to his side. “I’ll make it up to you,” he said, and it sounded sincere enough.
Pidge adjusted her head to face him. Her heart melted in his truly sorrowful eyes.
She sighed, letting the stress and frustration from the day’s events leave her body. Lance was safe, that was the most important thing, and she trusted her friends with whatever they needed to keep her away from. If it was dangerous, they were all more than capable of handling it.
The sun was nice to for relaxing, but the shade from the clouds made it better in the heat of the day.
“Wait,” Pidge said with realization. “Where did the clouds come from? There were none just a minute ago.”
Lance grinned as the skies quickly became overcast. “Just wait for it. I told you I’d make it up to you,” he said cryptically.
It call came together in her brain - like the sudden clap of thunder.
“It was you,” she accused. “Shiro asked to meet me here because you asked him to do something. When did you have the time to talk to him alone this trip?”
“Not this trip,” Lance corrected smugly. “Last trip, while you were messing with your mom’s garden.”
Her jaw dropped, stunned that not only was this all planned - but so far in advance. “You little snake,” she accused, no insult intended.
“Just keep watching. You never get to enjoy the power and beauty of a thunderstorm - always looking after your plants.”
She did, and didn’t even mind when Lance took hold of her hand. The clouds rolled together in strange formations, creating an impressive structure and lightning display unlike anything she’d ever seen. Before the storm could rain on them, it dissipated as quickly as it had begun, a brilliant double rainbow capping off nature’s display.
“Shiro is impressive as always,” she said with a smile.
“It was the best fireworks I could come up with on short notice,” Lance said sheepishly. “Just wait until you see the sunset.” He dug into his pocket and placed the contents of it in her palm. “I took the stone from that figurine you bought me. Hunk and Keith worked hard and fast to make it look nice - they knew you’d get suspicious. I hope you like it.”
The diamond ring sparkled as light hit it on all sides. The beauty took her breath away, but the magic fire imbued inside of it kindled her heart.
“I know we don’t really need it, since we have the bond, but I want you to have a gem. It's only proper for a dragon’s mage.”
He squawked in surprise as she hugged him tightly. “It's perfect. Thank you, Lance.”
Maybe her friends keeping secrets wasn’t such a bad thing.

Boyfriend’s Background Commentary - The Twilight Saga Part Uno
Movie: Twilight
Director: Catherine Hardwicke
Cinematography: Elliot Davis
Budget: 37 million USD
Release Date: November 21, 2008 (Canada)
Watched: August 21st, 2018
Boyfriend: @shiftaria
Part Uno - Part Dos - Part Tres - Part Cuatro - Part Cinco
With very little convincing, I managed to get my boyfriend to watch Twilight, about 10 years later. After all, he’s never read the books or really seen the movies, so, I thought it was about time. Having read and watched the sage myself over the years, I have this entire series implanted in my head, since I am that lame, so, to watch this with someone with fresh eyes is about to be very interesting.
Now this is the first movie, and like these movies, they try to start off like the book, and it’s pretty cool like the visual was welcoming, yet, the lighting was rather bright. With the brightness being as such, it makes this seem like such a fantasy world when it’s really just a teen romance.
Just a heads up, we’ve attempted watching this a while back and never finished. This is attempt number two.
Anyways, we get introduced to Bella Swan, who is off to live with her father that is pretty on the other side of the country, because she doesn’t want to travel around with her mother and Phil; Bella’s mother’s new husband. So, off to one of the rainiest places in the world. Which can totally be relatable, because so do Shifter and myself live literally in one of the rainiest parts of the world, literally twelve hours away from Forks.
We know a total of four characters, two of which don’t even make any kind of impact to the plot. Now, we are introduced to two more; Jacob Black; who made mud pies with Bella when they were little, and Jacob’s father; Billy Black, Charlie Swan’s best friend. We are then introduced to Bella’s lovely truck that can take a beating, which was rebuilt by Jacob. Bella does the lovely thing by hitting Jacob with the door as thank you.
First day at a new school, where all the guys just want to fuck her. Making friends with Mike, Jessica, Eric, and Angela, though Angela would be the only one that could even be called a friend, then besides Jacob (at least at the moment).
PA Announcement from Shifter: lots of three point mid-length shots, ei: a longer shot that has three different framings with two cameras moved that are transitioned between on an action beat.
This moment now is to lunch, where the Cullen’s are introduced. All of which come walking in white, then he comes Edward; dressed in black. I agree with Shifter that this was very in your face visual metaphor about Edward being the black sheep of the Cullen family. Also, another point that Shifter had pointed out, they don’t focus on it either. Like movies are either blunt about the metaphor or more in the person’s face, this movie is kind of pulling a middle ground, which is apparently throwing Shifter kind of off. Now for me, Edward just makes the scene awkward with staring, borderline glaring.
Back to class, which I now think is Biology. And shoot to Edward with wings behind his head, that once again is a shot at a metaphor. Back to Bella, who is standing in front of a fan, blowing her wonderful scent towards Edward. Jump to Edward very much overreacting. Now, this is where my wonderful boyfriend comments on their acting. This short story of it all is high school students putting on a play with a poorly written script, so their acting is either stiff or overacting.
We now get Buttcrack Santa and Bella getting really awkward with people because she hasn’t really been to Forks in a really long time. Now, I mentioned really shitty lighting with this movie. Thanks to Shifter he made a really good point. The scenes are really graded blue to give the feeling that it was at the risk of raining at any point. Like it’s fitting for the movie but the only issue was, it made the movie too fantasy-like.
Nice Edward, he apologizes for not talking to her when she sat next to him when she first arrived. It’s all way too strange, to begin with. He tries to be nice, only, Bella almost gets killed later that day, risking Edward and his family to be found out just because he went to save her. Back to being old and mean Edward. At least Alice tried to be nice to her. These scenes are just Edward mood whiplash. And she tries to invite him down to La Push as well, to be nice. Bella gets teased, and finds about the ‘Cold Ones’. Now we’re watching a Canadian History documentary, not that it wasn’t appreciated.
If Dr.Cullen might be a matchmaker, but Bella is a good friend and matchmaker herself for her friends. And she goes out of her way to do some serious research on something that shouldn’t be real, yet it’s very much is. Which leads to a very interesting way that might as well equal to coming out. But it was a rather good exchange.
Shifter finds that entire scene good, mainly because of the information dump that was given to him. Like the vampire camouflage, and the white, diamond skin. He was watching the movie with interest. Bella was asking questions, which was really good. The only line that made us cringe, was about Bella being Edward’s own brand of heroin.
Now with the movie slowing down a bit, Bella actually went out of her way for the Cullen’s to not worry about her. She gets a look into Edward’s life, through a music video with a beautiful piano, which goes to Charlie meeting Edward.
Que Charlie’s badass acting skills, especially with a shotgun. Very threatening, and very clever. Edward being very polite and say your daughter is going off the play baseball. Now, if Edward only had told us what Charlie was thinking at that moment.
Baseball! In a thunderstorm! For what reason!? To hide them making a loud boom when the ball hits the bat. Kind of surprised that nothing broke while they were playing since super strength is a thing. Like this scene was another music video, just a bit more fun than it was previously with the piano music. Really shows the family, but it’s a subplot that comes out of nowhere, yet this was pulled from the book since it’s the way to introduce our first three baddies of the series.
Thank god for Alice’s vision because they could have gotten Bella killed. Now, this is where I kind of get salty. They totally had time to get Bella out of there, just put her in the jeep and go, it would have saved like the last 30 minutes of the movie from being a fucking mess of unnecessary drama and Bella wouldn’t have to be mean to Charlie just to keep him safe.
Off to Arizona, Bella goes with Jasper and Alice, kind of putting Bella’s mom at risk. Why are they coming into a hotel during the day in Arizona? No clue, but let’s hope they don’t get found out. Just chill in a room with two vampires until your vampire boyfriend calls to let you know that you both need to disappear for a while. Now, to maybe an hour later, another phone call, but not any phone call, mom is worried about you, only to be a trap. Also, I’m honestly not surprised that Victoria got Bella’s information for James. They’re vampires, pretty easy to figure out a way to hack into a computer or something.
We all know that Bella is a complete idiot, so, she just goes alone, leaving no note or anything for the Cullen’s. Back to her old ballet studio, with glass everywhere, doesn’t that scream very bad things are about to happen. Oh, and smart on James for using a recording to bring Bella to him. Yet, dumb on Bella to use pepper spray, like what is that to do on a vampire?
Bella gets thrown across the floor, head bashing into a corner, and yes, she starts bleeding. Bring in sadistic James, who has a video camera, filming all of this, along with whatever thought told him to break Bella’s leg at that moment. Oh where, oh where is Edward? Oh, he finally arrived, but alone, and Bella is very much hurt. How hasn’t she passed out from her leg being broken is beyond me. Edward tried to get them away, but James has Edward back into a fight. James has the upper hand, Edward is too frantic with concern over Bella and the fact that her scent is filling the air due to the blood, giving James the chance to bite her.
Back to music video mode with inner monologue, and probably a seizure warning. Like I mentioned before, this entire part could have not happened if Edward and Bella just left the field, but whatever. Finally, after all of that, we get Bella frantic in a hospital room due to Edward saying that they shouldn’t be together. Kind of disappointed that we didn’t get to see Bella apologize to Charlie about all of this, it would have been nice to see since Charlie is kind of a huge part of the series, more so than Bella’s mom (I honestly can’t remember her name and way too lazy to even google it).
Father judging Edward scene, it’s very obvious that Charlie doesn’t trust Edward that much anymore for getting his daughter hurt and “hurting” her. But Bella is in a very beautiful dress, even if she’s in a cast. With words from Shifter, I would have to agree they dragged out the ending here a little much, but my main issue was why didn’t they have this nice lighting for the entire movie? It was soft and much more realistic in my opinion.
All in all, it was a good start to this review. Hopefully, I can get the next one out as soon as possible, because I can see this taking off somewhere.

i got all the parts i wished for (it's an ache & it shines through me)
[anyway someone said they wanted carm & laura & their baby running errands n stuff etc on a cold november day so here u go, this has no real substance & is rly just gay]
//
i got all the parts i wished for (it's an ache & it shines through me)
.
is it a sign? or just a landmine?/ or a feeling roaming free?/ it's overtaken me/ gonna hold it 'til it dries up/ or pocket it for another day/ if it's me i cannot give up/ i'd rather that she stayed/ oh, slack jawed me/ can't you see?/ there's so many rhythms and harmonies/ & i'm walking the dog back —sylvan esso, “slack jaw”
//
the morning is the kind of harsh bright that tells you that winter will happen soon, that this is one of the last days you can comfortably wear sneakers and spend time at the park without freezing. you yawn once, just waking up, and when you turn over, there’s your wife and your dog and your son, all sound asleep, all various degrees of small. you watch them all for a few minutes, curled up and tangled, and your chest hurts, because they’re the most beautiful things you’ve ever seen. you think they get more beautiful every day.
eventually, your stomach grumbles and carm cracks an eye open with a little smile. she’s tender with you, seemingly more so as time goes on, soft and sweet and honest. ‘good morning,’ she says in german, then yawns and shakes her head and says it again in english.
‘good morning,’ you say, and you want to kiss her but you can’t—you look down at your son and your dog again and she laughs, shifting to tickle both of their tummies. your dog scrambles around, trying to stand up, while your son squeaks out a little, delighted laugh and then babbles, reaching for you while he also has a death grip on carm’s hair. his eyes are a blue you don’t think you’d ever seen before until you watched them open for the first time.
you are so full of love in this moment, on this cold morning, that it knocks the wind out of you. carm looks at you curiously, because your breath catches and you feel like you might cry, but then she’s kissing your cheek and your dog is licking your son’s foot, which is making him laugh, and they’re all kind of a mess, and you just close your eyes and listen.
//
carmilla does things carefully now. not in a way that worries you—she’s not scared of hurting you, not timid. she just—cares. takes her time to make you dinner before you get home from work, a recipe she’d learned years ago in mumbai; just yesterday you’d watched her sit on the floor and rub waterproofing wax into all of your winter boots, working it in patiently with her hands, taking special effort along the seams.
you know why—the most special, quiet reasons. it’d taken you two years to convince her to go to therapy—four broken hands that hadn’t healed at vampire speed, more nightmares than you could possibly keep track of, and a lot of withholding sex—but she’d gone. with carm, you’ve learned that you need to go slow, with just about everything, but especially this. when she’d been in therapy a few months you’d suggested an emotional support dog for her, especially for during the day when you weren’t there. she’d certainly been enjoying her trust fund time, but you’d come home from work to her cowering in the shower, shivering, freezing and despondent. you’d come home to her sitting in the snow on your back porch in february, drinking whiskey and watching the sunset, and it was so cold out her eyelashes were coated with the remnants of frozen tears. you’d come home to carm hurt in so many ways, or reliving that hurt, tiny and beautiful and deeply sorrowful.
so you’d done your research and when you’d brought home a puppy to foster—his fur deep, deep black, his eyes light grey, with a sharp face, missing a leg; he was pulled out of rubble from a hurricane in the south—carmilla had held him very carefully, pet the length of his body with incredible gentleness, and smiled up at you. she’d decided to name him wittgenstein, so you’d insisted on calling him wit, much to her frustration. he’d very quickly become an important part of your family, and they’re scared of the same things: thunderstorms, sudden loud noises, when the subway gets stalled underground.
they’d healed, and it’d been years before you brought up the idea of children. when you had, though, carmilla had agreed much more quickly than you ever thought she would—but she had gestured toward your small, sleeping dog, his little sweaters in the corner and his organic dog food and his leash and snowboots, and then shrugged. you’d laughed and kissed her but you had understood: she is full of love, and she has always been full of care, even when it hadn’t seemed like it.
you’d adopted max months later, and carm had been terrified of him for a few days, you’re pretty sure. but she’s a fantastic mom, which you’d watched bloom and grow. she speaks lots of languages to him, whispers little songs when he’s crying. he seems to really like grabbing onto her hair, and she always gets up at night when he’s fussing.
the first time you’d brought him to visit her at work, in her little office with a mess of papers on the desk and what you’re pretty sure is hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of first editions and journals from famous philosophers on her shelf, she’d led you to a small café near campus, and a group of her undergrad students had run into you, and they had all melted at seeing her with this tiny, beautiful baby. she had grumbled but eventually laughed, his fingers curled around one of hers.
//
this morning you put max in his room, let wit stay by his playpen, and then walk back to your bed with carm trailing behind. you’re both laughing and you feel young again, you feel twenty again, when you lay this girl down beneath you and kiss her deeply, when you pull her body toward yours until she’s gasping your name in the golden light through the window. the hints of winter sun.
//
you lazily take a shower together, and you wash her hair, which she almost never lets you do. you kiss there too, although it’s without pretense, this intimacy. you get dressed in an easy rhythm, having shared this space for years. it strikes you sometimes at how profound and intense these ordinary moments of love are: of course you have fallen in love with her grand gestures—sneaking into palaces to dance at midnight, proposing on the roof of the philosophy building in the middle of a meteor shower.
but you hadn’t realized the magnitude of your love until you were grocery shopping years and years ago, and you had been getting vegan burgers from the freezer aisle, and when you had found her after she’d wandered off, she was closely inspecting pears, peering at them intensely. you’d been so floored by your fondness for her—this odd, brilliant, almost quotidian creature—that you still remember it now.
and this happens all the time, your love for her. when she’s making coffee and curses slightly when she spills a few grounds, then sighs and gets a clorox wipe from under the sink, when she talks quietly to max, when she smiles at you while you’re on the subway, holding your hand and not shaking at all.
//
today you have to run errands, but they’re not really important, so you bundle max up in his stroller and put wit’s sweater on, then his little boots. they’re really fucking cute, so you make carm wait so you can take pictures of them. she slouches and sighs but she’d put on a hat and a scarf and a legitimate weather-appropriate coat without having to be convinced or reminded, so you take it as a win.
she walks wit while you take the stroller, and you make her stop in victroire and of course she’s the one to find something; you go to jimmy’s for another coffee, chat with tahir, your favorite barista, throw the ball for a few minutes for wit at trinity bellwoods. it’s cold, and so you stop in at kenzo for ramen, try to feed max little tiny bits of noodles without making too much of a mess. you go to f as in frank and carm spends an inordinate amount of time trying on vintage sweatshirts, but she’s in a great mood today so she models them very seriously, which makes you laugh. it’s the only reason she does it, you think, which makes you love her more.
eventually, you can tell she’s getting tired, and max is getting fussy, and wit is panting. you make them all go with you to pick up groceries, though, the only real errand you’d had to run. you walk back with them to your little brownstone on euclid, and you’ve worked it out well enough by now that you can push the stroller, walk the dog, and hold her hand.
when you mention this, she laughs.
‘we really are parents then, hey?’
the tiny inflection at the end makes you stop, and take a deep breath, and she stops too, worriedly.
you shake your head, kiss her with all your might, so softly, right there in the middle of the sidewalk, golden leaves falling around, the last gasp of fall before the barren branches and snow. your son is babbling and your dog is shuffling around your legs, and carmilla—your wife—sniffles, just barely.
you back up and it takes you a second to form words, because her eyes are so dark and brimming with tears.
‘that was just very canadian of you,’ you tell her. ‘the “hey?”.’
she rolls her eyes with a messy, teary laugh. ‘that’s what caused a kiss like that?’
you shrug—you know you don’t have to explain it to her, not really.
she smiles, a grin, and you know what that means. ‘laura, i’m wearing blundstones.’
‘oh my god,’ you say, start pushing the stroller again as she jogs to catch up.
‘i have toque on—from roots.’
‘you’re an idiot,’ you grumble, but you’re laughing too.
‘i’ll make old fashioned’s with maple syrup while we watch degrassi tonight.’
‘i literally hate you,’ you say, but you glance over at her, dark hair and eyes and the prettiest skin, her warm heart and her beautiful brain, the golden light of the day waning, shimmering.
‘i love you too,’ she says, and reaches out to take your hand.

Singing in the Moonlight Ch 14: The Way You Look Tonight
Here we go.....
The next day when Meena awoke she felt more reluctant to leave the fuzzy world of dreams than she ever had before. She was tempted to pull the covers back up and dive back into sleep but she stopped when she heard the odd sound of her phone vibrating against the wood of her nightstand. Sleepily she reached out and picked up the phone, scanning over the screen to see if it was worth waking up.
The moment that she saw a text from Johnny flashing on the screen her heart pounded in her chest and any residual sleepiness melted away like the last snow under the sun’s rays. She rolled over in bed and cradled the phone to her chest and she eagerly read the message, her smile never fading from her face, actually growing larger with each second that she stared at the screen.
J: Mornin beautiful.
Meena giggled to herself when she read the simple text. It didn’t say much but she felt a little flutter in her chest because he had thought of her that morning, enough to send her a text. And he had called her beautiful. She fought the urge to duck under her covers and hide from his compliment and instead curled into a tighter ball so she could begin to formulate a reply. It felt like hours before she finally picked one of the million responses running through her mind and typed it out.
M: Good morning! :)
She was applauding herself on the cute reply when suddenly the screen changed to display an incoming call from Johnny. She nearly dropped the phone she was so surprised. Meena stared at her phone for a few seconds before she realized that she was keeping Johnny’s call waiting. She scrambled to frantically pick up the phone and pressed it to her ear, hoping that she didn’t sound to breathless or awkward when she answered.
“H-Hello?” She fumbled her words slightly but any embarrassment that she might have felt disappeared the instant that Johnny’s smooth voice came to life in her phone’s speaker.
“ ‘Ey Meena.” He seemed a little nervous and as a result his accent grew stronger, which only made Meena’s blush deepen. She had always loved his accent and by now she was fairly good at deciphering his words when it thickened.
“I was just callin’ cause I um… I wanted ter see if it was okay fer me ter pick ya up around six tonight?” Meena felt her heartbeat immediately pick up as she realized that he was talking about picking her up for their date. It hadn’t been a dream; she was going on a date with Johnny, finally!
“Y-yeah! That sounds great. I can’t wait.” Her excitement was hard to conceal she eagerly clutched her phone close to her ear as if by doing that time would fast forward and she would be seeing him in person, on a date. A date!!
He chuckled smoothly and his voice softened, his nervousness disappearing to be replaced by an alluringly soft tone that made her melt completely, “Me too love. I got it all planned aht. All I need now is ya and then everythin’ will be perfect.”
Meena felt her breath catch in her throat and she almost cursed him for being so charming but she wouldn’t trade the way that he made her heart pound irregularly in her chest for anything. She let out a nervous giggle as she tried to think of some way to reply to his flirting, but she was saved by the sound of Ash’s voice yelling in the background of Johnny’s call.
“Hey Lover Boy!! Get off the phone and help me lift this damn table. It’s freaking heavy!” Johnny let out a disgruntled huff that made Meena giggle again, but the softness in his voice never disappeared as he returned his attention back to her.
“Sorry love. I gotta go deal wif a grumpy porcupine. I’ll see ya at 6?” Meena was smiling so hard she was convinced that he would be able to see her expression just by listening to her talk, and she giggled again at his light teasing.
“I’ll be waiting for you. Now, you better go appease her before she takes her revenge.” Johnny’s laugh joined hers and she felt a reluctant pull in her chest at the thought of hanging up on him.
“I’ll see you soon Beautiful.” He chuckled and then the line went silent, her phone clicking as he hung up and their conversation ended. Meena laid in her bed for a few more minutes, staring at her phone with a look that bordered on deliriously happy. Finally she rolled over and flipped on her speaker, which immediately began spitting out her favorite music. She leapt out of bed and rushed over to her bathroom, snagging her towel as she went and swaying her hips as she sang along to the music and slid across the slippery tile in an improvised dance move.
She belted out happily in the shower and got dressed in the outfit that her mother had helped her pick out the night before: a pair of dark jeans and a loose white button up with thin black stripes and little purple flowers sprinkled all over it. She slipped on her converse and practically danced down the stairs, singing softly under her breath as she slid into the dining room where her mom was setting out the last of the pancakes.
Meena greeted her family happily, bestowing a kiss on her mother’s cheek as she accepted her plate and eagerly settled herself into her seat. Leslie watched her with a knowing smile and shook her head with a giggle when Meena eagerly dug into her pancakes. Meena was halfway through with her pancakes when she finally felt the intense gaze scrutinizing her every move. She looked up in confusion and locked gazes with her grandfather who was watching her in suspicious confusion, his coffee cup clasped in his grasp and his breakfast untouched. Meena quickly looked at her mother and grandmother who immediately looked down at their plates and pretended that they hadn’t been watching her since her uncharacteristically energetic entrance.
“What?” She finally asked, subconsciously taking a long sip of her orange juice. Everyone remained silent for a few seconds before her grandfather finally spoke up, his voice hard and colored with a ‘no nonsense’ tone.
“You sure seem happy this morning Meena… any special reason?” Meena felt her face heat up and her gaze remained glued to her plate as she stirred her food around, hoping desperately that they would just forget it and leave her be. It was a feeble hope, especially with a close-knit family like hers, but she couldn’t help but hold onto it nonetheless.
Finally Leslie broke the silence, “She’s got a date tonight!”
Her voice was high with excitement and pride as she blurted out Meena’s secret for the whole table to hear. Meena immediately looked up to seat her mother a despaired look that was promptly ignored in favor of her mother’s own ecstatic anticipation.
“Mom!” She groaned and nervously glanced at her grandfather whose face was dark with stubborn fury. She never should have trusted her mother to keep a secret considering that she had invited the whole neighborhood over to congratulate Meena when she auditioned for Buster’s talent contest the second time around. Leslie couldn’t help but gush over her only baby, it was in her nature.
“What?! Not my baby girl!” Her grandfather protested thunderously and Meena felt herself sink down into her seat in mortification as her mother shot her grandfather a furious look. A familiar battle of wills was taking place and her only solace as she watched her protective family battle it out was her grandmother’s hand as it patted her thigh and came accompanied by a soft smile. At least one animal in this family didn’t have to make a big deal out of everything.
“And just who exactly is this rapscallion that asked my granddaughter out without asking my permission first?!” Her grandfather banged the table with his fist but Leslie just rolled her eyes angrily gestured in no particular direction.
“Dad! This isn’t the middle ages! Meena can make her own decisions, she’s a grown mammal now and if she wants to go on a date she doesn’t need our permission.” She hissed out but Meena’s grandpa only huffed stubbornly and crossed his arms over his chest.
“In my day mammals had more respect-“ He muttered grumpily but was quickly cut off when Leslie sent him a pointed glare and gestured to Meena who was trying desperately to disappear behind her ears. She stiffened when her grandfather’s attention returned to her, but thankfully his rant had vented some of his protective ire and his mood had downgraded from hurricane to thunderstorm.
“So who is this mammal?” He muttered seriously, taking a sip of his coffee as he waited for Meena to extricate herself from her cocoon of safety. Slowly she emerged and regarded her grandfather with nervous baby blues that immediately made his expression soften. She glanced at her mother who nodded encouragingly, her smile wide and happy.
“Um… w-well it’s… Johnny?” It came out as a stuttered question rather than a statement but instead of descending into another rant Meena’s grandfather just calmly took another sip of his coffee and cut into his pancakes. Meena gaped at his calm form and looked to her mother with wide eyes, obviously expecting some kind of explosive reaction like he was known for but Leslie looked just as confused.
“Grandpa?” She asked tentatively and waited as he slowly chewed the pancake and then glanced over at her, his eyes soft and loving.
“That’s that gorilla boy right?” He asked and Meena nodded slowly, still confused and increasingly worried that maybe her grandfather had been replaced by an alien or something else to cause such a drastic personality change.
“He’s a good boy.” Was his only response and Meena felt relief like she had never known flow through her. She had been expecting a fight with her grandfather about her date with Johnny but she had never expected such easy acceptance from him. It was a shock to say the least.
“But if he tries anything I’ll teach him a thing or two.” He muttered and Meena felt a small measure of relief at his idle threat if only because it was so much more like him than easy acceptance. She chuckled and cut herself another bite of pancakes, her good mood and her appetite returning.
“Sure grandpa.” She said indulgently as she smiled down into her pancakes, smiling when the breakfast conversation turned away from her love life and towards last night’s episode of Leopardy. Meena giggled when her grandfather and mother burst into another argument about one of the answers last night.
She spent the rest of the day trying to distract herself, nervously flitting around the house trying to find things to do. After a couple hours her mother finally kicked her out of the kitchen with an affectionate huff.
“I love you sweetheart but you’re driving me crazy with all of this hovering. Go watch TV with your grandparents or something.” Meena frowned and wandered over to the living room, plopping down on the couch next to her grandmother who patted her knee comfortingly before turning her attention back to the old movie that was playing on TV.
Meena spent the next hour almost obsessively watching the clock before finally giving up and trying to pay attention to the movie. She actually found herself enjoying the black and white romance as the figures gracefully danced across the screen. She was dreamily watching the moose onscreen as he cradled the gazelle in his arms, softly serenading her in one of the most romantic movie scenes that she had ever seen when the doorbell finally cut through her daze.
Her heart jumped into her throat and her gaze shot to the clock where the hands rested innocently on 6 o’clock. Meena leapt off of the couch and ran past her mother as she walked out of the kitchen, headed for the door as she wiped her hands off on her apron.
“I got it! I’ll get it!!” She called almost frantically as she slid to a stop in front of the door, taking a second to take a deep breath and gather herself before pulling the door open. Her heart practically froze in her chest when she saw him standing there, his hands still buried in his chaotic hair, obviously caught in the middle of him trying to style it. As soon as he saw her his surprised look morphed into a goofy smile and her heart started beating her chest again, albeit erratically.
Some day, when I'm awfully low, When the world is cold, I will feel a glow just thinking of you And the way you look tonight.
“Wow.” He said softly, his eyes roaming over her form quickly before returning to her face, a pink blush now dusting both of their cheeks, “Ya look amazin’ love.”
Meena felt her face heat up more and she forced herself to open her mouth and get out some kind of reply, “Th-thanks J-Johnny. You look n-nice too.” She fiddled with the hem of her shirt and looked up at him anxiously. He made no comment on her stuttered reply and instead detangled her hand from her shirt, clasping it in his own affectionately.
“Thanks love. Ya ready ter go?” He asked, shifting a little anxiously, but never once dropping her hand from his grasp. Meena nodded and reached over to grab her jacket, smiling gratefully up at him when he released her hand only to help her get the jacket on. She was in the middle of slipping her other arm into her jacket when her grandfather’s voice called out from the living room and stopped her in her tracks.
“Meena?! Is that boy at the door? Bring him inside so I can have a chat with him!” Meena and Johnny’s eyes widened simultaneously in panic and she frantically put on her jacket while ushering him out of the house and towards where his truck was waiting on the street.
“Go go go.” She hissed as she shut the door behind her and let him lead her to his truck, his hand clasping hers once more. He quickly opened the door to his truck, and helped her in, making sure that she was settled before running around to the driver’s side. Johnny nervously started the truck and they drove away with the soft sounds of the radio filling the nervous silence between them.
Johnny couldn’t help himself as he continuously glanced at her out of the corner of his eye, trying to gauge her mood as they drove. She seemed nervous but the small smile on her lips had yet to fade, and those blue eyes that he loved so much sparkled with excitement in a way that made him take a deep breath to steady his pounding heart.
After a few minutes they pulled up in front of his and Ash’s apartment and his nerves returned as confusion colored her expression. He hopped out of the parked car and almost tripped in his hurry to get to her side of the car so he could open the door for her and head off any conclusions that she might jump to.
She gave him a nervous smile and accepted his hand as he lead her out of the truck, through the building and into the apartment where he finally released her to hurry into the kitchen. For half of a second Meena was disappointed that they were staying in, it felt more like friends hanging out than lovers on a date but then she peeked into the kitchen and saw the disaster that was barely contained in there.
The sink was piled high with dirty dishes and the charred remains of various attempts at some indiscernible dish lay morosely in the garbage can. Johnny was nervously muttering to himself as he grabbed two mismatched wine glasses from the cupboard. Despite the mess and the wasted food that would normally make her heart hurt, Meena saw the real meaning behind the disaster. Johnny had tried to cook for her, several times if the pile of dishes was any indication, and he was pouring wine into the different wine glasses, his hands shaking slightly. The obvious effort and dedication that he had put towards this night was enough to charm her beyond belief. No one but this sweet gorilla had ever gone this far to please her and if their date turned into a movie marathon with takeout, well then she would enjoy every second with him.
Johnny turned around; the wine glasses in his hands, to find Meena looking at the horrific state that he had left the kitchen in. He grinned sheepishly and shrugged as he handed her the glass and nervously took a sip from his own.
“As ya can see I’m not much of a cook.” She giggled in response and cradled the glass delicately in her hands, all confusion and doubt having evaporated to reveal that smile that made him feel warm and tingly inside.
“I don’t mind.” She said softly and his heart gave an erratic thump as he fell in love with her all over again. He knew that cooking was sacred to her and he had done his best to prepare something edible for them but he was hopeless in the kitchen and all that had resulted was a charred mess. He had been trying to hide it from her, thinking that she would be offended by his culinary blasphemy but instead she accepted it, accepted him, and kept on smiling.
“Ash went aht ter see a movie or summit so we got the whole apartment to ourselves tonight.” He rambled a little nervously and Meena too a sip of her wine, the taste stinging her tongue gently as it went down. Johnny felt his courage and excitement well up all over again and he led the way to the living room, waiting for a second so Meena could take off her jacket.
Meena stopped suddenly when he didn’t sit on the couch and instead went to the open window. He surprise only grew as he lifted it all the way open and climbed out onto the fire escape. Tentatively she followed him but stood frozen at the window, inexplicably scared that the fire escape wouldn’t be able to handle a mammal of her size.
Johnny reappeared in front of the window when she didn’t immediately follow him up the stairs and held out his hand for her to take. She shakily clasped his and stepped forward, shooting him another nervous look and receiving an enamored smile in return.
“Daan’t worry love. I gotcha.” His voice was so soft that it was almost a whisper but his voice might as well have been the only sound in the world as she let him pull her out into the night, mesmerized by the tender way that he looked at her. She barely noticed as he led her up the stairs, past dark windows until the finally reached the roof.
He helped her onto the roof but before she could look around his hands quickly came up to cover her eyes so all she saw was darkness and the heat from her blushing cheeks rivaled that of his calloused hands. Suddenly his smooth voice was right next to her ear, his tone caressing each word with utter affection.
“Surprise.” Then his hands disappeared and the scene before her stole the very breath from her body.
You're lovely, with your smile so warm And your cheeks so soft, There is nothing for me but to love you, And the way you look tonight.
The entire rooftop was decorated in light, with strings of light gently illuminating the perimeter of the rooftop and various candles gently accenting the center of the roof where a table and two chairs had been set up. The table was covered in what looked like a white bed sheet and a pizza box sat innocently between two plates. She felt a thread of amusement at how contrary but surprisingly fitting the pizza box was but she couldn’t muster up any outward emotion besides delighted shock.
“Oh Johnny.” She whispered breathlessly and next to her his tense form immediately relaxed. He took her hand and guided her over to the table, even going so far as to pull out her chair for her and place two pieces of her favorite veggie pizza on her plate. She smiled gratefully up at him and resisted the urge to gape at her surroundings in favor of turning the full force of her bright smile on him.
He was nervously picking at his pizza, the wine glass cradled in a death grip in his other hand, “I uh… I kna its nothin’ fancy but I uh… well…”
For once Meena was the one to interrupt by reaching across the table and placing her hand over top of his in a way that she hoped was reassuring, “Johnny. This is better than any fancy restaurant could ever be. Thank you.”
He melted instantly and flipped his hand over so that he could bring hers up to his lips and place a delicate kiss on her skin, “Anythin’ fer you Meena.”
Meena’s skin burned pleasantly where his lips touched it and she reluctantly drew her hand back so that she could eat her dinner. Pizza and wine was an interesting but not unpleasant combination and as they grew more comfortable in their new situation, Johnny and Meena quickly began to talk just like they always had before outright romance had been thrown into the mix.
They talked about important topics like music and their lives but at the same time they exchanged stories that left them breathless with laughter. By the time they had exhausted every topic the sun hand sunk below the horizon and the pink sky had darkened to reveal the sparkling heavens. Meena felt like she was in heaven as she turned her gaze up to the sky, automatically searching for her favorite constellations.
Johnny, on the other hand, couldn’t tear his eyes away from the perfect mammal sitting in front of him, the candlelight dancing on her skin in the most beautiful way and the stars glinting in the blue of her eyes. He wondered how he had ever gotten so lucky as to convince her to go out with him when she could have anyone that she wanted.
With each word your tenderness grows, Tearing my fears apart And that laugh that wrinkles your nose, Touches my foolish heart.
“‘Ey Meena.” Johnny’s voice brought her back down to Earth and she turned her attention back to him as he stood up from his seat and moved over to where she was sitting, “I got another surprise for ya.”
Clumsily Meena stood as well and watched in fascination as he took her hand for what felt like the millionth time that night and pulled her gently over to a raised part of the roof where he had laid out a blanket and a few pillows, obviously pilfered from the couch. She felt trepidation rise up in her like a tidal wave when he climbed up onto the platform and layback against the pillows and she stood nervously at the edge, hoping that she was reading the situation wrong.
Johnny looked back at her in confusion when she didn’t join him and it only took one look into her nervous baby blues to realize how this must look to her. His face went cherry red and he quickly scrambled into a sitting position, tense with embarrassment and the intense need to explain and comfort her.
“Wait! This isn’t- I didnae mean- Stars!” He blurted out a line of nonsense, gesturing helplessly at the sky as if that alone would explain. Meena’s face was about as red as his but she still hesitated, just as confused.
“I just thought tha’… well I thought we could look at the stars. And I wanted ya ter be comfortable and…” He rubbed the back of his neck nervously, his gaze glued to the blanket below him so he didn’t notice when Meena’s expression changed to one of delight rather than confusion and fear, or even the anger that he half-expected. He was in the middle of berating himself for ruining their first date when she climbed onto the platform and settled back against the pillows. Her cheeks were still red with the lingering embarrassment of their misunderstanding, but she was smiling again and searching the sky.
Suddenly she pointed up at the sky in a way that reminded him of how they had found cloud formations together, “See that group of stars in the shape of a pinwheel?” she asked and Johnny tentatively laid back down, throwing a glance the sea of lights above them to see if the pinwheel shape that she was talking about was obvious. It wasn’t.
“Yeah…” He said tentatively, deciding to play along and let her continue on with her story. Meena smiled to herself, fully aware that he probably hadn’t found the galaxy, but happy that he was at least pretending for her.
“It’s called the Hercules constellation.” She said softly and Johnny relaxed into the pillows as she explained the myth of the great Geek hero and how the constellations around her were the great monsters that he had faced in battle. Occasionally he would glance up at the stars occasionally to see if he could find the formation but except for one lucky instance it was just a see of bright dots to him. But to Meena it was like a celestial tapestry, telling stories from long ago so he kept his eyes on her and through her enthusiasm he saw them.
He had expected star gazing to be the thing he least enjoyed about tonight because it was usually a quiet activity but Ash had convinced him that it was a good idea with a glint in her eyes. He should have known that Ash would know all about Meena’s obvious love for the stars and for the millionth time that day he sent her a mental thank you because without her insistence he would never have gotten to see the way Meena’s eyes seemed to be filled with the stars she loved. Her stories almost seemed to run together as he watched her, listening but not really absorbing the tales. He knew it was a date taboo to not listen to the girl but when she looked like that, with such breathless happiness, how could he not get lost in her smile?
Meena suddenly realized that she had been talking for what felt like forever, her words filling up the air while Johnny remained silent until prompted. She glanced over at him, slightly worried that something was wrong, but he was propped up on one arm, his cheek resting in the palm of one hand, and his brown eyes watching her with the softest look she had ever seen. She rolled over slightly to look at him as well and her stomach fluttered when he leaned in close and his gaze lit up with an unfamiliar but not unwelcome look.
That was when she saw it. Out of the corner of her eye a flash of light as it streaked across the sky to some unknown destination. She pulled back with a gasp and looked up at the sky as if her gaze would bring it back or inspire another star to fall.
“Johnny did you see that?” She whispered ecstatically, feeling suddenly as if her voice at normal volume would break the magical spell, “It was a shooting star! I saw a shooting star!”
She finally unglued herself from the sky and looked back at Johnny who was smiling crookedly up at her again. A familiar blush colored her cheeks when she realized that she had interrupted a very important moment but she couldn’t feel ashamed when he sat up a little bit and glanced up at the stars.
“Well ya better make a wish then.” He winked and Meena giggled in response, her eyes sliding shut and her face tilted upwards as if it would help send her wish into the universe. Johnny stealthily leapt off of the platform and hurried over to where his phone was plugged into a small speaker next to the table. He quickly chose the song he had picked out for that night and a gentle beat echoed through the air.
Meena opened her eyes when the music came on, her sensitive ears easily picking up his movements so that she was looking right at him when he slowly made his way over to her, somehow keeping his steps in time with the music. She spun so her feet hung off the side of the platform, her shoes inches from the ground, and when he reached her and offered his hand to her she gladly took it.
Yes you're lovely, never, ever change Keep that breathless charm. Won't you please arrange it? 'Cause I love you Just the way you look tonight.
Meena let out a little sound of happiness and surprise when he pulled her to him and began to slowly spin her around the rooftop, his strong arms wrapped around her body in ways that she had only dreamed about. She settled easily into his embrace and banished any nervous feelings that tried to well up to somewhere where they couldn’t ruin this moment.
Slowly she leaned forward until she was resting her head on Johnny’s shoulder and the sound of his quick heartbeat filled her senses. It was nice to know that he was just as nervous as she was and her body relaxed so that even the gentle pressure of his hand on her lower back wasn’t enough to make her blush. It was too perfect, and then it got better.
Johnny’s soft, smooth voice rang out as he accompanied the singer and Meena was quite sure that if she died here and now it would be okay because she was living out her very fantasy. Johnny voice flowed in the silence of the rooftop, overpowering the original singer so that only Meena could hear him singing, and to be honest it was what she preferred.
She looked up when he spun them around with a flourish, dipping her slightly before guiding her back into his arms and to the spot where she could rest her head against him once more. The gentle smile that had been on her face for the whole night widened and she buried her face in his button down shirt, inhaling the warm scent of motor oil and the fresh scent of cologne that she actually liked.
As the song sped up just slightly his voice and his sincerity strengthened with it and Meena couldn’t resist looking up at him to see it in his face. He was looking down at her, and probably had been the entire time and as soon as she looked up at him she couldn’t tear her eyes away.
The tender music started to fade slightly and his words grew sifters he leaned in once more, their twirling dance moves having faded into a gentle swaying so that they could gaze at each other uninterrupted. As the song faded away into silence, Meena felt her heart pounding in time with Johnny’s own frantic heartbeat and she leaned up to meet him, the ghost of his name on her lips as they inched towards each other. The world around the disappeared completely, even as the next soft song began and a mischievous breeze enveloped the rooftop and threw them into muted darkness as it snuffed out the majority of the candles. They were left with the dim light of the string lights and the soft moonlight that hung above them.
It only made Meena’s eyes that much brighter, in an almost ethereal sense and Johnny closed the rest of the distance between them, their eyes sliding shut as their lips met and their hearts stopped in reverent silence for the moment. Johnny’s hand came up to cup her face as he deepened the kiss slightly, Meena’s inexperienced lips pliable against his own as he shaped and remade her with his own.
They kissed for what felt like forever, their brains giddily fuzzy as they tried to process the new sensations and feelings that such a simple action could evoke. Finally the need for oxygen tore them apart and they separated just enough to draw in air, their lips still brushing occasionally in small kisses that were like aftershocks to the original earthquake. It was like they had stepped into a small piece of heaven.
With each word your tenderness grows, Tearing my fears apart And that laugh that wrinkles your nose, Touches my foolish heart.
As the moment gradually faded away they remained locked in some kind of embrace for the rest of the night. The next few hours were filled with little kisses that Johnny rained down on not only her lips but also her lips, her cheeks, even her hands. Each one was treasured and either incited a giggle or an adorable blush that made Johnny want to kiss her more.
It was with an air of reluctance that they finally climbed down from the roof and slowly made their way to Johnny’s truck, their hands clasped together like an unbreakable tether between the two of them. Johnny opened her door for her once more but this time he moved slowly as he made his way to the driver’s seat, and the truck’s pace as it weaved it’s way to her house was relaxed and nearly below the speed limit.
When they finally pulled up in front of her house, the mood in the truck had lost the sparkle of new love. Neither of them wanted the night to end, but time stopped for no mammal and they had to accept their fate. There was definite promise of more to come between them, unspoken but completely clear. Meena looked over at Johnny as he fiddled with his keys for a minute before morosely getting out of the car to escort her to her front door.
They walked with hands clasped until they reached the door and they stopped to face each other. Meena looked up at Johnny and squeezed his hand until he gave her a smile again.
“I had a really nice time tonight.” She said softly and his smile grew half in pride in himself but mostly at the idea that she was happy.
“So did I.” He tried desperately not to drown in her blue eyes, knowing that they would have to part at any second. Meena saw him get lost in his thoughts and in a rare move of boldness she brought her hands up to cup his face and guided him down to her lips for another deep kiss. The electricity of the first kiss had not faded in the slightest as they both short circuited upon contact, their lips moving together with greater ease as they got used to each other. Johnny’s arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her flush against him, effectively eliminating any distance between the two of them.
After a few minutes, Meena felt herself being drawn in again and she slowly pulled back, cutting them off rather suddenly than gradually pulling away like the first time. Johnny was left wanting as she released him and instead grasped the doorknob.
“G-Goodnight.” Was the last thing he heard before she disappeared inside the house and was left standing on the porch by himself.
Yes you're lovely, never, ever change Keep that breathless charm. Won't you please arrange it? 'Cause I love you Just the way you look tonight. Just the way you look tonight.
He took a few seconds to come back down to Earth and stumbled dazedly back to his truck, getting into the driver’s seat with about half of his usual grace and ease. He sat there for a few minutes, smiling to himself as he replayed their night over and over again in his head. He glanced back at her house again before starting his truck and driving away, his heart practically burning with joy.
Darling Just the way you look tonight.
As soon as Meena closed the door behind her she melted back against it, almost sliding down to the floor as her weak knees struggle to hold herself up in wake of such an amazing kiss, an amazing date. He hand tentatively came up to caress her lips, which still tingled from where he had kissed and her entire face went red. She sunk the rest of the way to the floor, grinning brightly to herself as she hugged her knees and released the happy giggles that had been bubbling up inside her all night. She probably looked insane, but love made you kind of crazy right? And she was completely at peace with that.
Johnny was halfway down the street when his joy finally burst forth from him in a breathless laugh and he turned up the music that pounded from his stereo, the beat only magnifying his joy as he leaned his head out the window and let the cool night air hit him straight in the face. What a world, what a life he thought to himself and then took a deep breath and yelled out the window for the whole world to hear, “I’m in love!"

OKAY DEATH NOTE 2017 THOUGHTS
Under a cut for length not spoilers because honestly who fucking cares
-So the movie commits many sins but principle among them are two 1) The Death Note is basically just a vehicle for gore porn, pretty much indistinguishable functionally from any other 'Cursed Object' type horror movie. There's lip service paid to the suspense trappings of the original work but Wingard is clearly much more interested in the kind of brutal deaths that can be extracted from the Death Note's flexibility of options and far less in the moral quandaries that such an object would create, and Wingard's pre-release interview that expressed an interest in creating a Hard-R version of the story was at least for me a clear indicator that he was Wrong for the project, since grisly deaths are not what makes the story interesting, or in fact are even a priority. The fact that the default way the Death Note kills in the original canon is a heart attack (by all intents a fairly 'clean' method of death) is there for a reason, as is the 2017 version's curious decision to specifically omit that detail.
(In Wingard's interview he expresses a desire to include the "adult themes of anime" which specifically include "nudity, swearing, tons of violence" to him, which suggests that his familiarity with the medium starts and ends with Ninja Scroll and nothing else and that he probably didn't actually watch Death Note outside of a cliffs notes he had an intern scribble out or something)
2) And this is much more fundamentally antithetical to the original work, but Light's transition from Villain protagonist to Reluctant Misunderstood Anti-Hero.
in the original canon it's certainly possible to find Light's end goal aspirational, even if the actual empathy with Light himself doesn't last very long, and part of the paradox of the manga/anime is Light being a pointedly and unmistakably Terrible Person while also being a compellling and interesting protagonist. Even if you don't necessarily want Light to succeed, watching him operate and maneuver through various obstacles on the path to his goal is fascinating on its own terms.
Death Note 2017!Light, by contrast, is given great, excruciating measures to make him Highly Sympathetic to the audience, and indeed we are meant to interpret him specifically as a Good Kid Who Took A Wrong Turn and is now Way In Over His Head. His mom died at the hands of Joe Chill a crook who got away with it, giving him a nice clean Batman justification, he's bullied at school, is extremely concerned with his actions being percieved as good and perhaps most crucially, tries to limit his body count outside of criminals (American!Light reacts extremely negatively to the mere IDEA of killing his dad when he calls Kira out, whereas canon!Light, while certainly not enthusiastic about the idea, was right there weighing the pros and cons, reasonably prepared to do so if he proved to be enough of a problem).
He doesn't even use the Death Note initially of his own volition; Ryuk has to be there to straight-up Devil on His Shoulder-him into it (in a hilariously over-the-top introduction, more on that later), and Misa (sorry, MIA) is constantly pushing him to go darker when his resolve wavers, and indeed seems way more into the idea of using the Death Note on a visceral level than Light is.
All of this is contrary to one of the crucial points of Death Note in its original form-- Light was a person of privilege surrounded by a loving family and with infinite potential who had absolutely no reason to have become a power-hungry arbiter of "justice" with a god complex, and yet when a bit of power happened to fall into his hands that's exactly what he became. He didn't need a traumatic event or a bad situation to become Kira, just the possibility that he could do it and get away with it.
But even in a Death Note adaptation where the first death we get is someone's head being cut off at the jaw with a fucking ladder, this seems like too dark a conclusion for Adam Wingard to come to, so even when his body count starts rising we get constant excuses and reminders that he's A Good Kid, Honest, He's Really Trying To Do The Right Thing He's Just Got So Many Bad Influences That Pushed Him This Way and in the face of the original work's frankness (and Wingard's talk of "adult themes") this just comes off as cloying and toothless.
Nevermind that in light (heh) of the extremely whitewashed nature of this adaptation, the almost fetishistic effort of the writing team to sanitize Troubled White Teen Boy Light Turner (Who Has His Whole Life Ahead Of Him) of as much active culpability as possible is certainly quite telling isn't it
Okay that out of the way, time for some just Random Bad Shit lol
-just so we know exactly what we're dealing with and what director Adam Wingard thinks is cool one of the very first shots of the movie is Misa (sorry, MIA) at cheerleading practice but see she's not like THOSE OTHER SHEEPLE who are all ACTUALLY PRACTICING AT CHEER PRACTICE SHE'S A COOL DISAFFECTED REBEL BECAUSE SHE DOESN'T WANNA PRACTICE AT CHEER PRACTICE god look at these PHONIES all having fun and laughing OUR GIRL IS SO COOL SHE'D MUCH RATHER SMOKE AND LOOK BORED WHAT A BADASS -And like later in the movie she's all to Light "I'M A CHEERLEADER nothing i ever did mattered before i met you!!" like then WHY ARE YOU A CHEERLEADER WHY WERE YOU THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE?????? YOU CAN DO LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE MY KIDDO -So the Light/Mia relationship is kind of a mess because not only do they try and play it up as the emotional lynchpin of the narrative (no, for real) but the reversal with Mia being the one who becomes super obsessed with the Death Note (even to the point where she tries to set up Light to die so she can get it) and her being the Other Bad Influence on Light really manages to make even the original Death Note's bad track record with its women fucking shine by comparison. If the original Light/Misa dynamic was basically a Joker/Harley setup written by someone who understood that it's an abusive relationship, new!Light/Mia is the Hot Topic Romanticized Joker/Harley but also Joker is the Real Victim here apparently -Like they literally get off to using the Death Note together and make out while scanning the internet for targets-- like there COULD absolutely be a place for there to be commentary on Bored Well-Off White Kids abusing power for the fun of it, but again there's no room for insight when there's those practical gore effects to throw around -Dear god there is not a HINT of subtlety in this fucking thing, an especially egregious stylistic choice when the manga/anime is (while ofc prone to Light's.... extreme and borderline comically evil reactions) overwhelmingly grounded with-- especially compared to many anime and manga in general-- comparatively moderate supernatural elements and touches, especially in terms of its visual detail and art direction. Wingard's Death Note on the other hand, has thunderstorms AND flickering lights that accompany Ryuk's appearances until they... don't (ARE YOU PICKING UP THE SUBTLE FAUSTIAN ELEMENTS HERE AUDIENCE????????), a trip through a Spooky Dark Abandoned Mansion that features a close-up of a busted doll accompanied by a creepy child's laugh NO REALLY IM SERIOUS and deaths that frequently end in torrents of blood because that's what we're really here for apparently -Speaking of a lack of subtlety, while I get the logic in casting Dafoe for Ryuk he ends up being both underutilized and a sadly uninteresting choice, since the apparent direction for him to go more Norman Osbourne really takes away any degree of ambiguity Ryuk has as a patently neutral party in the whole thing (at least as far as the original goes; this really wants to set him up as a Red Herring possible antagonist in a thread that goes absolutely nowhere and ends up meaning nothing). Like I think he could have worked if the performance was a little lower-key and he had not-terrible writing to work with, but at least someone's having fun in this mess so wth -L fans are gonna be fucking pissed off because HOLY HELL they didn't not fuck him up either -Canon L: Sherlock Holmes but with sweets instead of hard drugs and also he sits weird sometimes -Death Note 2017!L: Fucking Weirdo Asshole With Bizarre Rituals galore and also he can't sleep without Watari awkwardly singing the greatest hits of Celine Dion SHUT UP IM SERIOUS because okay -So the wierd race bullshit definitely doesn't stop at Light because the framing of L (who is played by Keith Stanfield, a black actor and OH BOY I CAN ALREADY HEAR THE IMNOTRACISTBUTS COMING IN) is pointedly, aggressively antagonistic. Rather than giving Stanfield the collected, analytical, somewhat awkward detective characterized in the source material, Death Note 2017's L's erratic tics and behaviourisms are meant to make the audience find him uncomfortable rather than compelling in his own right, because autistic-coded super detective is such an interesting and not at all gross and played-out formation of a character. Because again, the movie has no real interest in being suspenseful or focusing on the cat-and-mouse game, L figures out that Light is Kira with very little deduction or buildup, and indeed aside from a pointedly brief midpoint conversation and a completely stupid and pointless chase scene near the end, the two barely interact, so the whole aspect of two strong wills directly competing within inches of each other is tossed aside. -Also WHO THE FUCK THOUGHT A SCENE OF A YOUNG BLACK MAN BEING SLAMMED INTO A TABLE AND NEARLY CHOKED OUT BY A WHITE COP WITH ANGER ISSUES AND A SELF-RIGHTEOUS STREAK IN DEFENSE OF A GUILTY WHITE KID WHO ULTIMATELY GETS AWAY WITH IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TASTE WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT -Speaking of poor taste we couldn't find more than one Japanese actor for a speaking role (Watari, natch, with barely a handful of lines) BUT WE CERTAINLY COULD FOR THIS SEX CLUB SCENE WITH A ROOM PACKED FULL OF DEAD JAPANESE PEOPLE IN FETISH GEAR -Ryuk himself also looks Fuckin Bad and they know it since the overwhelming majority of his shots are him BLURRED THE FUCK OUT IN MIDDLE DISTANCE OR OFF IN THE CORNER -"many people have tried to write the 4 letters in my name into the Death Note but nobody has gotten farther than 2 :)" your full name was literally in there but ok -"all the deaths have to be physically possible" Ferris Wheel magically collapses for no reason to facilitate a death -"I need L's full name to kill him, I'll just take control of Watari with the Death Note EVEN THOUGH WATARI IS A FUCKING ALIAS" and also if this was in fact his real name and L knew it WHY WOULD HE HAVE LET HIM GO AROUND WITH HIS FACE UNCOVERED LIKE????????????????????????????????? -Reveals L without ceremony during the nightclub murder investigation/pretends like there's a mystery and a reveal to be had for the audience and awkwardly attempts to re-enact bits of the original introduction to the character anyway
Ultimately there's more that I'm probably forgetting but wow Death Note 2017 is just impressively dumb. Like, original Death Note could get pretty dumb especially in the last half, but that was more a case of working itself into a corner over time and its reach extending beyond its grasp on occasion. This just has no aspirations to even try.
Like, shit, I honestly don't like Death Note all that much but I can at least appreciate that it has some weight to it and made an effort to build a complex character-driven narrative while proposing a thoughtful moral paradox, which is more than I can say for the 'fans' who wanted to adapt it and decided this was the best possible approach lmao

SQW Summer 2K17 Day 7
Parent Trap
Heyo! This one is a little later, but a little longer than all the rest! It’s a second part set five years later to my SQW day 5 post!
Henry sat at the counter, waiting. He didn’t have to wait long until Deputy Nolan took a seat right next to him and ordered a coffee.
“Are you sure the storm will be big enough next week?” Henry asked, without looking up from his milkshake.
“No one can really predict the weather,” Deputy Nolan reminded him, “but it looks like a doozy.”
“And Ma will be on duty?”
“I’ll make sure of it,” Deputy Nolan promised. “How are you going to get Regina to the station?”
“Leave that to me,” Henry told him.
“Are you sure this is a good idea? Meddling in your moms’ love life?” he asked.
Henry finally turned to look at the deputy. “David, I’m fifteen and for the five years since the divorce they’be both been miserable. The first two years, okay, I got it. It was awkward and there was still a lot of tension. But now? Only those two can’t see what’s right in front of them.”
“Emma told Mary Margaret about the fights when it first started,” Deputy Nolan said, “Emma told her that it was what was best for all of you, especially you. She hated thinking of what it was doing to you.”
“I was ten not that long ago and let me tell you, I don’t remember tension until Ma left the house,” Henry pointed out. “That’s really when Mom thought she was sleeping around.”
David shifted uncomfortably. “You’re very candid about all of this.”
“I have to be. Neither of the other two are being logical about this situation,” Henry said.
“Love isn’t about logic,” Deputy Nolan told him. “Love doesn’t work that way.”
“I have to try,” Henry insisted.
***
The storm arrived as the weatherman predicted. No one was very prepared seeing as the weather channel has a way of never being completely accurate. This worked out well in Deputy Nolan’s favor. He told Emma that he and Mary Margaret hadn’t fortified their basement and asked her to pick up an emergency shift for him. She, of course, readily agreed.
Henry had a plan of his own to get Regina to the station. He knew she was a tad overprotective and had a tracking app on his phone, so he stashed it in one of the filing cabinets that Emma barely opened. He hoped the first person Emma would call for backup on his behalf would be Deputy Nolan since Henry would be with him. He didn’t want to scare his parents that much.
***
Regina paced. She’d been pacing for fifteen minutes. The storm outside was getting bad and Henry wasn’t home. She pulled out her phone and saw that he was at the Sheriff station. She tried to convince herself that he was fine-- he was with Emma-- but she was thoroughly convinced that her basement was safer.
She called him, but his phone went straight to voicemail. She looked outside and took a deep breath. God, she hated storms, but this was her baby boy. She ran to the car in her raincoat and drove to the station. When she arrived she was relieved to see Emma… until she didn’t see Henry.
“Where is he?” she asked, slightly panicked.
“Where’s who?”
“Henry!”
“He’s not here? I haven’t seen him all day,” Emma told her.
“The app on his phone says he’s here,” Regina insisted.
“Oh, come on! You still track his phone? He’s fifteen!”
“Exactly. He’s fifteen. And besides, I use it for emergencies only.”
“Well it must be wrong because he’s not here.”
Suddenly the wind picked up outside and a loud thundercrack pierced the air.
Regina dropped to the floor with her hands over her head.
Emma was up from her chair in a second and crouching next to her, speaking in a soothing voice, “Regina? Hey, it’s okay.”
Regina hadn’t had this type of comfort in five years. She sat up slowly and pressed herself against the blonde’s firm body. “We still don’t know where Henry is,” she whispered.
“I’ll call David. He might know,” Emma said. She got up, promising she’d be back quickly, and called David.
“Emma?”
“David, have you seen Henry?”
“He was walking by and I saw the storm getting bad not that long ago. He’s here and safe. We just tried to call Regina, but she didn’t answer,” David told her.
“She came looking for him here,” Emma told him. “Thanks for looking out for him. We’ll pick him up when we can.”
“Take your time. It’s really bad out there and I’d rather him even have to spend the night then anyone risking anything.”
“Really? You’re a lifesaver, David.”
“What are friends for?”
The two exchanged goodbyes and Emma returned to Regina, who was still sitting on the floor, but had pressed herself against the wall with her knees pulled up to her chest. Her jaw was tense, eyes unfocused ahead of her, and her right would sit still. Emma could see how hard she was trying to not have a panic attack-- especially in front of her.
Emma sat down next to Regina and wrapped an arm around her and pulled her close again.
Regina turned into the comfort and buried her face in Emma’s neck.
Emma rocked slightly, trying to help Regina calm down.
This was something Emma very quickly learned about Regina when they first met. She hated storms. Not just hated-- she was terrified. She was anxious during light thunderstorms, but with ones like the one outside she was a full blown mess. A month into their relationship there was a horrible storm and Regina, as much as she tried to fight it, couldn’t handle it. Emma had immediately asked her what she needed and did what she could. Regina had thought that the relationship would be over then and there, but it just bonded the pair even more.
“Regina,” Emma called softly, “if we move to the supply closet it might muffle the storm a bit more.”
Regina nodded into Emma’s neck and Emma helped lead her over to the supply closet. There were so many reams of paper, Emma hoped they absorbed the sounds outside.
The two sat there in silence for a few minutes, Regina with her head on Emma’s shoulder and Emma rubbing Regina’s arm. When Regina seemed to be a bit more calm, Emma decided to try and get her mind off of the situation.
“How have you been handling these alone?” Emma asked, knowing full well that since the two had split there had been at least half a dozen of these types of storms.
“I bought noise cancelling headphones,” Regina replied quietly, “I go to the basement and sleep on the pull out couch while listening to music.”
“You know, the first time it happened after we divorced-- oh I’d say about a year and a half after-- I drove to your house,” Emma confessed. “I knew it was going to be bad for you and I was torn between being there for you and leaving you alone like I knew we agreed on.”
Regina shifted to look up at Emma and gave her a small smile. “At the time I either would’ve been very grateful or very angry.”
Emma laughed, “yeah, I figured those were the two emotions you could’ve had.”
“For what it’s worth, I’m grateful you thought of me then,” Regina told her.
Emma gave her a sad smile. “It’s not like I could just forget.”
Regina pulled Emma into a tight hug. “I’m sorry.”
“You never let me feel alone on my birthday, so you must’ve never forgotten either,” Emma replied.
Regina pulled back. “How could I?”
Emma shrugged. “I guess I always thought you’d never consider it your job anymore.”
“It was never my job, Emma. I hated seeing you so… so depressed those first few years we were together,” Regina told her. “I knew I never wanted to see you like that again.”
“Having the kid over and you sending him with mountains of food was definitely a shock the first time. Especially since it wasn’t my day to have him,” Emma said. “I’ll admit I teared up when I saw him at my door. You did sometimes special for me every year and I feel like I’ve done nothing for you since… since the divorce.”
“The third year after we separated,” Regina started, “I was up for reelection. I was told you worked your butt off to promote me.”
“You heard about that?” Emma asked. “Well, I didn’t want a different boss. We work.”
There was a tense silence.
“We do as coworkers,” Regina said softly.
“Regina, look,” Emma pulled back so she could look Regina in the eye. “I miss us. And I don’t mean being together or being married-- I still think we made the right decision-- but we were such good friends. We don’t have to be in a relationship to have family outings, or watch movies on the couch, or even go to a freaking PTA meeting together. I miss us as a team. We’ve been avoiding each other for the last five years and I think it’s affecting Henry more than our actual fights.”
Regina sighed and ran a hand through her hair. “I know. I know you’re right. And I haven’t helped the situation much-”
“Hey, neither of us were. Don’t take it all on yourself,” Emma interrupted.
Regina smiled and snuggled into Emma’s side. “I do miss this too, you know.”
“I know,” Emma said quietly, pressing a kiss into Regina’s hair, “but I don’t think I trust myself with you.”
“Trust was my issue, if I remember correctly,” Regina pointed out.
“Yes it was, but I didn’t handle that very well.” Emma paused before getting serious. “I didn’t cheat on you, Regina.”
“I knew that as soon as you brought up giving birth to Henry,” Regina confessed. “I had forgotten in those ten years how much you hadn’t wanted to be pregnant, but you did it for us as a family. You reminded me of that the day we went to Dr. Hopper’s office.”
“The kid may have been a pain in the ass the carry, but he was worth every minute,” Emma said.
“I’m also very grateful that you didn’t fight for full custody,” Regina told her.
Emma furrowed her brow. “Were you afraid I was going to?”
“At the time, yes I was,” Regina replied.
“I never had any intentions of that,” Emma told her. “I never would’ve taken him away from you.”
“It took about a year for that the sink in, but I never did thank you,” Regina said.
“It’s what good coparents do,” Emma pointed out.
“Well, while we didn’t work out as a married couple, I’m glad we can at least be decent coparents.”
“We could be better,” Emma said. “We could try to start next week with a dinner and a movie night?”
Regina looked at Emma and smiled. “I’d like that.”
“Until then, I’m here for you to wait out the storm, okay?”
“Okay,” Regina said, holding onto Emma tight.

Survey #108
*too lazy to think of song lyrics*
Are you a dreamer or a do-er? Ehhhh not sure... I'm really a mix of both. Do you think people get what they deserve? In most cases, nope. Does it take a lot of physical pain to make you cry? Yes. Name the strangest game you’ve ever played (video game or real game): SH2 was such a mindfuck. SH3, too. Do you like sitting in the front, back, or middle of the classroom? Front because I'm blind as shit. Do you ever see commercials for restaurants that aren’t even in your area? Uhhhh maybe? Do you know anyone who has been struck by lightning before? She wasn't directly struck, but my mom was washing out a can during a thunderstorm, something was struck, the electricity pulsed through the pipes, and the water shocked her. Which is better: living where there’s lots of tornadoes or lots of hurricanes? Hurricanes. I'm used to them. I know severe hurricanes are technically worse because the scope of damage is far larger and there's also water damage, but I think tornadoes are WAAAAY more frightening. Would you pay if your dog needed an operation? Well, technically, Teddy needs one and we can't afford it. He's had an enlarged prostate for years, but by now, even if we had the money, him undergoing surgery would be dangerous with his age. I wouldn't be comfortable doing it. If you’re a girl, what’s your favorite color of eyeliner? So apparently boys can't wear eyeliner, that's nice to know. I only wear black. Have you ever overflown a bathtub? No. Why did you ignore the last person you ignored? I had nothing to say. But I guess that's not really "ignoring." What’s your favorite pizza place? Domino's, probs. I don't like their crust much though. What’s at the top of your to do list in life? Stay happy. Do you ever eat leftover pizza cold? I actually like cold pizza, so long it's not a few days old. Then it's too hard. Where are you the most ticklish? FEET DON'T FUCKING TOUCH MY FEET Would you put your life in danger to rescue someone? A few people, yes. When you’re wanting a midnight snack, what do you normally get? I never really want a midnight snack. But probably like those packets of six, little peanut butter crackers if we have them. Which cartoon character would you want to keep as a pet? Awwww Courage <3 Or Pikachu, but that's an anime, so w/e. Do you like marshmallows? I don't love them, but I can eat a few. What is your favorite flavor of candy cane? The fruity flavor ones. Especially blueberry and strawberry omgggg. Do you have any shoeboxes full of old photos/letters/other memorable stuff? I have a huge box, dude. When was the last time you felt seriously embarrassed? Uhhhh... I'm not sure. A LOT of things embarrass me, but I dunno about seriously. Have you ever liked a song, looked up the lyrics to it, then hated it? No. I'm not the kind where lyrics depend on if I like the song or not, it's sound. I have songs I like that have fucking awful lyrics. I do know when to draw the line, though. What’s your favorite Christmas song? "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" and "Christmas Chimes." Did you like the show Invader Zim? I actually never watched it even though I wanted to back then. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen in a grocery store? Okay so real shit Wal-Mart now has animal masks. Like, furry head masks. In the middle of the fucking hall. Do you prefer to pull off band-aids slowly or quickly? Lol I admit I do it slowly. Have you ever met any bands/band members before? No. But it is one of my goals to one day buy backstage passes to Metallica for especially my mom, hopefully me too. She. Would. Sob. Do you enjoy riding around town looking at Christmas lights? Awwww, I miss doing that. We can't afford that extra gas money now, but also we live in a rural area, so there's not all that much to see. There's a few people who go all-out though. What’s a good book you’d recommend? If I could recommend only one book, "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo. Fucking. Phenomenal. What states have you been to in the past year? Just NC. Have you ever sleepwalked? No. What’s your favorite superhero movie? Uhhhh. I really liked the Batman movie with Bane, and one of the Spiderman movies, but I don't remember which. This isn't really a spoiler anymore, so, the one where his girlfriend dies. Do you struggle with acne? No. Totally did through puberty, but it stopped when I was like... 18, maybe? Possibly 17? Around what year did you start using the internet, anyways? Hmmm... 2004 or perhaps 2003? I became more active when Meerkat Manor came out, but before that I was all about Webkinz and Neopets. What did you do for your 16th birthday? My 16th was awful, all I'm saying. Have you ever fostered an animal? You mean like, briefly watched? No. What’s your favorite form of exercise? Swimming. Do you have a back pack in a shape of an animal? I don't think I ever did. Do you still take hot showers when it’s hot out? My showers are pretty much always relatively hot. What’s your favorite type of cake? Red velvet. Name something you thought was cool when you were younger but don’t now? Who the fuck was that monkey that was on a lot of shirts I don't remember. What was the last song you downloaded onto your computer? "Rocket Man" by NSP. What color are your headphones, if you have any? Black. Do you honestly like The Beatles or are you just conforming? I've never liked the Beatles. What was the last video message you received on your phone? Sara sent me a video of... Jem, I think? Who did you last talk to in Facebook chat? Don. When writing $ sign, do you draw one line through the S or two? Ummmm I think two. I write it so rarely I don't even know. Do you feel bad for people your age who have never had a significant other? No. Some people don't want one. When do you plan on moving out? If you’re already moved out, how old were you? I doubt I will until I'm in a long-term relationship. I don't think I'd do well living alone. Would you kiss the last person you texted? Only if I knew she wanted me to. What do you think of guys wearing colored skinny jeans? Go for it. Where do you normally get your hair cut? We go to a family friend named Kenesa. Would you trade last names with your best friend? Sara's yes, I like hers. Colleen no. Would you ever get blonde highlights? I have natural blonde-ish highlights, mostly towards the end of my hair. Will you go to your high school reunion? Nope. Have you stayed up past 3 in the morning this week? I think so. Do you ever not speak to someone because you’re afraid you’ll annoy them? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH Personally, do you think you have a nice smile? Nope. What animal have you always wanted as a pet but couldn’t have? Probably a ferret. They're just a lot of maintenance.

The 1975 are a band that have been capturing the hearts of thousands since their break in to the music scene in early 2014 with the release of Chocolate, a single from their debut self-titled album. At least, that’s when I first caught wind of them up here in Canada. I’ll admit, I wasn’t much of a fan at first, being put off by lead singer Matt Healy’s at times hard to understand vocals. At the same time though, even I couldn’t deny how infectious and catchy Chocolate was, whether I could understand it or not.
I didn’t become the massive fan I am now until last year, months after the release of their second album, i like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it. I gave the band a second try and quickly became enamoured the their music. Though their use of callbacks to the 80’s in their instrumentals and quirky lyrics, the 1975 have managed to establish a unique and unmistakable sound for themselves.
Here are my top 10 personal favourite songs by the band. Keep in mind that I’m not claiming to be a professional music critic here (though I do lovecriticizing music, but that’s a topic for another day). These songs are my favourites for a combination of reasons, which I will explain for each pick.
Enjoy, and feel free to leave your favourites in the comments if you’re a 1975 fan too!
10. fallingforyou
The spacey, airy, atmosphere of this song to me always perfect captures the feeling of being intoxicated by love, or even lust. It’s a good sex song – and you’ll hear me say that about a lot of 1975 songs. The biggest reason that this song made my list is the sentimental attachment I have to it. When I hear it, I can’t help but be reminded of the night that my boyfriend and I spent last summer before we were dating, drunk at a friend’s house, sharing a couch meant for one person all night. To me, that innocence and wonder at the prospect of finally being with that person you’ve wanted for a long time – yeah, that’s what gets me about this one.
Favourite lyric: What time you coming out?/We started losing light/I’ll never make it right if you don’t want me round/I’m so excited for the night/All we need’s my bike and your enormous house
9. UGH!
I will stand by my opinion that this is by far the most catchy 1975 song. The bubbly beat contrasts the kind of depressing lyrics about a cocaine addiction, and what can I say – I’m a sucker for upbeat sounding songs with deeper lyrics. I love listening to this song and focusing on a different layer of it each time. I also love the more raw tone Healy’s voice has here, especially in the chorus.
FL: Oh the kick won’t last for long/But the song only lasts 3 minutes/I think I’ve lost my phone/So won’t you call it up for me?
8. Me
Now this is a song that sounds depressing, and is depressing. Healy takes on very personal issues here in this song that even if you are unable to relate to, are easy to understand. The raw emotion in his voice and the lyrics he sings always stirs something deep inside of me. You can’t help but vividly feel his pain as he sings about considering taking his own life. The simple ping-pong beat and slower synths in the background allow for all of the focus on Healy and his words, and it works incredibly well. This is one of my go-to feel sad songs, and I adore it.
FL: I’m sorry but I’d rather be getting high than watching my family die
7. Love Me
The jarring guitar riff at the beginning of this song was what I hated about it most when I first heard it, and now it’s the very thing I love most about it. This is probably the most retro sounding song the band has recorded, and my God I love it. So does my mom for that same reason. With Love Me, I don’t pay much attention to the lyrics, but rather just enjoy every second of the instrumental. It’s a song that I love blasting in my car with the windows rolled down, and though I love that the 1975 can evoke a strong emotional response from me with their lyrics, I love that they can do it with their actual music too.
FL: Hey! Would you like to look outside sometimes?/I’m just with my friends online
6. Menswear
Speaking of amazing instrumentals, that’s all the first two minutes of this song really is, and it’s the best part of it. Well, the buildup that the instrumental creates is the best part of it actually. As the beat kicks in and the sounds become more complex I can’t help but feel my emotions build with the music. I anticipate the moment the lyrics explode into the mix, somehow always managing to catch me off-guard no matter how many times I hear the song. But the lyrics here aren’t lacking either – they’re witty, a little passive-aggressive, but most of all fun. This is a song I never get tired of hearing.
FL: He looks just like me, but 6 foot 3/So I reckon you could knock him out
5. Robbers
I feel like this is the 1975 song that makes almost everyone’s favourite list, but there’s a reason for that. The instrumental fade-in at the beginning of the song that somehow manages to set the tone perfectly, the chilling lyrics and the longing way that Healy sings them – to me, it’s an almost perfect song. It’s just so atmospheric, and I get absorbed in all 4 minutes and 15 seconds the way I would in a good book. This is also another 1975 song that has a lot of sentimental value to me, and for that reason it always hits me a little harder when Healy sings, you look so cool.
FL: But if you just take off your mask/You’d find out everything’s gone wrong/Now everybody’s dead/And they’re driving past my old school/And he’s got his gun, he’s got his suit on/She says, ‘Babe, you look so cool’
4. A Change of Heart
This song is an anomaly to me. Normally, I’d be annoyed by the whining synths, passive-aggressive lyrics, and the melody that is all over the place, but again, those are the things that I love about this song. The bouncy synth on the beat that almost sounds like tin drums, the simplicity of the song that somehow makes it more complex – I adore it. While I do think it’s instrumental is its strong point, A Change of Heart’s lyrics are a lot of fun too. That feeling of realizing someone isn’t exactly who you thought they were and regretting starting anything with them in the first place is again something that I find very relatable. Here, Healy uses the lyrics to paint both himself and this girl in a not-so-nice light, making the whole story feel a lot more like reality than an ego-boost or a ‘holier than thou,’ sort of thing. I also have to acknowledge the reference to Robbers here- it adds some layers to the story and is a smart way of rewarding 1975 fans for their careful listening.
FL: You smashed a glass into pieces/That’s around the time I left/And you were coming across as clever/Then you lit the wrong end of your cigarette
3. Somebody Else
I could call this the song that truly got me into the 1975. I watched the music video by my friend’s recommendation the day it came out and after that I was hooked. Again, it’s just so damn atmospheric. I can always insert myself into the narrator’s position – hazy, confused, miserable, jealous, a little drunk. It became the soundtrack to my summer of 2016 and what I was going through around that time in my personal life only made the song that much more important to me. I remember one night I had gone for a run when a thunderstorm had broken out while I was far from home, and I put this song on repeat as I embraced getting soaking wet and seeing the lighting in the distance. It’s moments I’ve had like that one with this song that make it one of my all-time not just 1975 songs, but songs in general. I could go on for hours about it’s tone, lyrics, music, and of course it’s music video, but I have 2 more songs to go.
FL: Get someone you love?/Get someone you need?/Fuck that, get money/I can’t give you my soul, ’cause we’re never alone
2. Sex
Objectively, I believe this is 1975’s best song. It was their first single in 2013, and for a lot of fans, including myself I think it embodies what we love about the band. The driving guitars, and Healy’s classic vocals and racy lyrics all come together here to create the band’s most obviously ‘rock’ sounding song. Everything about it works so well, I don’t even know what I can say that everyone else hasn’t. It’s a song that I always want to hear, I never tire of, and everyone seems to like. It’s smart, undeniably catchy, and has that thing that I’m a sucker for – the upbeat sound with the sadder but clever lyrics, this time about someone being a little more invested in an affair than the other is. It’s a good sex song, I guess, but a great song in general.
FL: And she said use your hands and my spare time/We’ve got one thing in common, it’s this tongue of mine
1. You
Yes, this is my number one. I don’t even know where to begin with this song and what it means for me. Have you ever seen or read The Perks of Being A Wallflower? If you have, then you’ll know what I mean when I say that this is my tunnel song. I don’t know if there are many other songs in the world that can make me feel what this one does. The lyrics, though vague, symbolize a lot for me in terms of my personal life. That’s how I could summarize this song for me – personal. It represents overcoming obstacles, getting over something that had been dragging me down for 4 years, moving to a big city away from everything that was hurting me at home. That’s not to say that the instrumental doesn’t play a part in this emotional climax for me, in fact, it might play a bigger role. Those opening notes always signify to me that I’m going to feel okay, that I’m going to be okay, and when those triumphant sounding guitars kick in during the chorus, that’s exactly how I feel. Proud that I’ve made it, proud that it ‘takes a bit more,’ to truly bring me down. This song will forever hold a place in my heart that none other could, and it truly sums up why I love the 1975 and their music.
FL: It takes a bit more than you
