Sometimes I find it mind-blowing that my brother and I grew up in the same house, in the same family. When we are done having family lunch and I get up to help my grandmother clean up at the same time that he puts on his headphones and sits on the couch next to my father, when he decides to leave our family weekend early plainly because he's bored, I want to shake him, I want to scream in his face: Don't you feel it too? This overwhelming urge to be perfect? When I chose to pursue engineering instead of philosophy because our parents are engineers, and our aunt, and our uncle, and our grandad, he chose to study history. He didn't like physics. When my grandmother casually mentions that she sees me far more often than him. Me, who lives in another country. Does he get tears in his eyes when our mother comments on his weight? Does it make him feel small when our father ignores the ending of a story he's telling? Is he ever scared that his voice is too loud? Why doesn't he have a seven-step skincare routine? Is he really not scared of disappointing them? Does he really not feel guilty if he doesn't answer to one of my texts? Because I can not go a day without talking to my mother and feeling like a bad daughter.

Is he scared of crying in front of people, too?

Or, do I feel all of these things so that he doesn't have to?

Apparently the local university’s undergraduate entomology course sends students to catch insect specimens at the same place I like to go birdwatching, which explains why I saw three enormous frat looking dudes with tiny bug nets and overheard one emphatically say “bro BRO I told you we already have enough lepidopterans”

If my mom sees a significant amount of blood she gets lightheaded, and has fainted on some occasions. Once it happened when we were kids, I wasn't there to witness it but I heard the story from my dad. Basically my brothers, around 7 or 8 at the time, were playing outside while my mom was making their lunch, and she accidentally cut her finger. It wasn't anything serious, but it drew a fair bit of blood and she passed out. My dad saw this and rushed over, but he didn't really know what to do so he just sort of started slapping her to wake her up (not recommended, but he had no idea and panicked)

At that exact moment my brothers both came in from playing, and all they saw was our mom unconscious on the floor and our dad slapping her. So, like, without even saying a word to each other they both just INSTANTLY start whaling on him, like, full blown attack mode to defend our mom. Which obviously didn't help the situation, but she did wake up and everything was fine.

Now our dad says that he's actually really glad they attacked him over what they thought was going on, because it means he raised good boys. And I still think that's true, they're very good boys.

It would be difficult to contest the fact that the bond between siblings is extra-special! Especially because many of them have spent most of their entire lives together. History of Siblings Day

Siblings Day was created by Claudia Evart, a freelance paralegal professional from Manhattan, New York, USA. Evart was inspired to start Siblings Day after she had the tragic experience of losing both her brother and her sister in separate accidents at an early age. The date of Siblings Day is very important to its founder as it marks the birthday of her sister, Lisette.

In an effort to promote the day, Evart began the Siblings Day Foundation as a charitable organization in 1995. Since then, the founder has dedicated herself to convincing American government officials to recognize the day. Her success in this effort has included 49 state governors, many congressmen and congresswomen, as well as US presidents Obama, Bush and Clinton.

Mostly, however, Evart wants the public all over the world to recognize the day and use it to appreciate their own brothers and sisters. The Siblings Day Foundation also offers resources for people who need help with their sibling relationships.

In addition to the United States, Siblings Day is celebrated in many countries, including Australia, Brazil, India, Japan, Nigeria, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and many more.

Sometimes called Brothers and Sisters Day, this is a day of celebration and recognition for siblings around the world, whether they have passed on or are still living.
