sometimes i do feel kind of caught between wanting to keep tumblr a place of escapism for myself and my mutuals and using my blog as like. a sort of cultural historical archive.

i think a lot of the times when i rb posts abt current events, i'm not really thinking about it in a "oh i have to share this with other people so that they can see it" kind of way; i'm thinking about it in a "this is a slice of this very specific moment in time from a very specific cultural perspective, and i want to archive that." because i never really liked studying history in textbooks and stuff growing up, but i've since discovered how deeply engrossing it is to immerse myself in the casual records of a moment in time and to have that fill in the image of that historical event in my mind.

and obviously, blogging is a very down-to-the-minute method of doing it with pretty decent automatic timekeeping these days. since i've had this blog for so long now, it's become really interesting for me to sometimes look back on what i reblogged at a particular historical moment and understand those feelings and compare them to the present.

anyway all this just to articulate some thoughts bouncing around in my head and also sort of apologize for blogging about politics when there are people who use this website as an escape from the real world

Hey there. First time follower to your blog (very cool btw). My question is: does supergirl still have a rivalry with Power Girl? Or have they buried the hatchet by now?

Yes… but also not really? I’m going to use this ask as an excuse to fully lay out how inconsistently Kara and Karen’s dynamic has been written since DC randomly decided to focus on their (usually nonexistent/insignificant) relationship, because it's really annoying to me, but the TLDR is: when written by Leah Williams the hatchet is buried and they get along fine, but when written by Mariko Tamaki there's still a lot of unresolved tension between them.

In Action Comics #1052, Leah Williams introduced the new dynamic between Kara and Karen (this is the first time they've interacted since the New 52!):

Here, the rivalry between them is one-sided, with Karen expressing that she feels out of place and inferior around Kara and the rest of the Super-Family. Important to note that Kara doesn't share these feelings at all! In fact, earlier in the issue when talking about Karen's newfound psychic abilities (don't ask me how she got them, I have no idea), Kara says this:

"Setting aside the fact that I should have learned this news from you—Omen tells me you've some psychic capacity now, yes?"

So from Kara's perspective, her and Karen are close enough to where they should be sharing whatever new developments occur in their lives, but obviously Karen doesn't feel the same way.

The next time they interact is in Power Girl Special (2023), again written by Leah Williams, where Karen reads Kara's diary and discovers how much she really means to Kara:

Personally, I find this a little ridiculous since Kara and Karen have never been particularly close, so Kara saying that she views Karen as "an extension of [her] soul" and that they "share a bond that no one else in this world could possibly conceive of" just seems so out of nowhere, but it aligns with what Williams established in Action Comics #1052, so. whatever. At the end of the issue Kara and Karen hug it out, and Karen accepts the love that Kara has for her:

Kara even let's Karen take her cat (Streaky) at the very end of this issue, so clearly they've left off on good terms right? Wrong!

Their next interaction is written by Mariko Tamaki in Supergirl Special (2023), and their relationship starts from ground zero. This time Kara is the one who has an issue with Karen, and Karen is the one that reaches out to her. Tamaki writes Kara as being insecure of herself now that Karen is operating along with the rest of the Super-Family. In the issue we're shown two instances where Kara is attempting to do something heroic, but Karen swoops in and finishes the job before her (first at the beginning of the issue where Karen catches Toyman before Kara can, and again later on where Karen rescues a man from a collapsing building before Kara can reach him). When Karen tries to check on Kara they speak coldly to one another:

(Side note: the editor's notation isn't even correct, Kara and Karen have their therapy session in Action Comics #1052, not #1053. Kara isn't even in that story. But whatever!) Later on, Lois comes to check on Kara because of her recent behavior, and Kara says this:

"When I was a girl… No matter what I did… I was always one step behind. And the faster I tried to go… The more I fell behind. I left my planet just as it was turning to dust. Just as my world was falling apart and taking everyone with it. Everyone but me. Because I had a job to do. I had a destiny. But I was still already falling behind. I was too late. To be the one thing I was sent to be."

So, essentially, Kara's one-sided beef with Karen stems from her not arriving to Earth on time after Krypton's destruction and not being able to protect and raise Kal like she was intended to. So seeing Karen be more accomplished and experienced than her makes her feel insecure and causes her to lash out. Personally, I find this petty and insecure characterization to be pretty lame for a version of Kara that's incredibly accomplished and has already had years of experience at this point (remember: she's been a hero for as long as Nightwing has!), but whatever. After Lois leaves, Karen comes to Kara's apartment and checks in on her again. They laugh about the guy Karen saved getting the two of them mixed up and then have this interaction:

Very sweet, they've come to an understanding. I mean, we already saw them have an entirely different dynamic and work out their differences in Action Comics #1052 and Power Girl Special (2023), but who cares!

Their next interaction is in Power Girl (2023) #5-7 and they're back to being written by Leah Williams. The only real thing to note about their dynamic in these issues is that they're able to work together perfectly fine and without any lingering tension. They investigate a mystery together, do some science together, and get transported to another world together—perfectly content and happy to be working with one another. Because again, they've already come to an understanding (twice over now!). So, from now on, they're going to get along just fine right? Wrong again!

Their next and final interaction (for now) is in Action Comics #1070, written by Mariko Tamaki. In this issue, Kara is about to embark on a long journey into space, but before she can leave Karen stops her:

Personally, this comes off as needlessly hostile and out of place to me! Even if you ignore everything that Williams has written with these two (which it seems like that's what Tamaki is doing), this doesn't even align with where they left off in the Supergirl Special. They agreed that they share the same "destiny" in the special, but here Kara is once again avoidant and Karen has to nag her to try and find out what her issue is. It's frustrating.

So again, to answer your question, they both have and seemingly haven't buried the hatchet. It just depends on whether Williams is writing them, or if Tamaki is.

A potentially sensitive blog and I need to say it mentions abuse of autistic children.

The two critical factor about me which I suppose lead to this blog are two loves and a hatred:

I love the Murderbot Diaries and the character who I (don’t need to say this, but some people may have missed it) love the most (other than SecUnit, obviously) is Gurathin*.

I also love science, it’s my passion: especially the communication of science.

My hatred (and this will need clarifying, as I have limited reserves of hate and use it sparingly) is of the people who run, coordinate, organise and monetize the anti-vaccination movement. I don’t hate someone caught up in their often seemingly plausible and oh so seductive lies, I hate the Wakefields and the Kennedys and the Bigtrees.

And one reason I hate them is for the way they portray autism: they claim autistic children are “vaccine damaged” and they promote dangerous “cures” (horrific things like MMS, aka bleach).

As if autism were a thing to be feared, that autistic children are somehow broken.

I HATE THIS

This idea that you can cure autism, that autism could or should be defeated, that it’s a form of damage.

Hopefully that indicates where I’m coming from…

The Corporation Rim in The Murderbot Diaries is a capitalist hellscape.

In this horrific future world where we have the literal, explicit, slavery of constructs and the enslavement of bond workers I can imagine that those in power might encourage (even force) parents of autistic children to “treat them”, make them “normal”.

Hopefully you can see this would be very much NOT what I’d see as a good thing, but an extension of the terrible things we already see being done today.

And what if one “treatment” was a form of augmentation: something that is in the autistic person's brain “correcting” their behaviour to “act normal”, a device which might be said to “govern” their behaviour. Like ABA, but a device in your brain.

In the Murderbot Diaries we have Gurathin, an augmented individual who has made his way to Preservation. The nature of his augments are never made explicit (though he does apparently have a better connection with the feed, and visual augments- though we don’t know if the two are related). I think Gurathin is great, and the Murderbot Gurathin canon relationship is brilliant and extremely funny, Exit Strategy:

(“I don’t want to be a pet robot.”

“I don’t think anyone wants that.”

That was Gurathin. I don’t like him. “I don’t like you.”

“I know.”

He sounded like he thought it was funny. “That is not funny.”

“I’m going to mark your cognition level at fifty-five percent.”

“Fuck you.”

“Let’s make that sixty percent.”)

There is friction, a lot of it, in their relationship. An obvious root cause of this is their similarity**, as Murderbot says in Fugitive Telemetry to take just one little example:

“Gurathin seems to hate talking to strange humans almost as much as I do. ”

Perhaps his augments are why? Perhaps Gurathin’s augments��� purpose (or one purpose) was to moderate his behaviour, like the awful treatments promoted for autistic children in our world, the augments’ intent was to make him act like “normal”, or allistic people. Perhaps this is why he (remarkably) notices that their SecUnit is acting unusually, or not like a normal SecUnit? Perhaps Gurathin knows what it is to have something in your head controlling you, like SecUnit’s governor module.

Gurathin asks:

“You don’t blame humans for…what happened to you?”

I wonder what happened to Gurathin?

I’m so glad the both of them found Preservation.

Michael Clifford hair timeline

As some of you might know, this blog started from the frustration of missing certain things in the 5SOS fandom. I’m a 1D fan, I’m used to seeing masterposts about anything and everything. That’s very much not the case in the 5SOS fandom. So I figured, if it’s not here, I might as well go and do it myself. A while back I came to the conclusion there doesn’t seem to be a proper detailed timeline of Michael’s hair journey. So of course, I decided to make one. I heavily underestimated the amount of time this would cost, but I (mostly) had fun making this. So, now I would like to present you with the finished result. It should have every hair color ever in here, but if I somehow missed something or got something wrong, please let me know. I’ve tried my best to be as thorough as possible, but I only became a fan in 2020 and basically had to work my way through 5SOS history for this.

I used Michael’s instagram as a guide and filled in the gaps with interviews, tour diaries, etc. Thankfully he documented most of his hair changes on instagram, which made my job a little easier. So let’s get going!

I have combined 4 pictures into a collage, to prevent having to post close to 50 pictures below each other. The order of every collage is left to right, top to bottom.

So we start with Michael’s natural hair color,. This is a picture I found on Google, I have no idea about the exact date. But this is his natural hair before he started dying it. The next picture is the very first time he dyed his hair, this was a red-ish brown. This picture was posted on January 2 2013. Then later on in the same month he decided to dye his hair darker, to a chocolate brown, which he posted a picture of on January 27. His first bold color happens about a month later. On March 30 2013 he posted this picture of himself with dark blue hair and some lighter blue highlights in his fringe.

The next change comes June 19 2013. When the blue has been mostly removed, you can tell there’s some blue left in the fringe from the highlights, and the rest of his hair still has a blue-green tinge to it. This picture is a screenshot from the 5SOS vs. food video, Michael did post a picture of it on instagram captioned: “when I went blonde for a day”, but the color of that one is quite saturated. So is a better representation. After that, we move on to galaxy hair! The first picture with this hair was posted on instagram on June 19 2013. I thought this was a separate color from the 3rd picture in this collage, but it’s possible it’s the light playing tricks. Picture 3 was posted on June 26, exactly a week after the previous one. On July 6 we move on to the next change, bleach blonde! I think this is the first time he bleached his whole hair. Since the previous color’s were all darker than his own hair, he wouldn’t necessarily have needed bleach. As seen in the first picture of this collage, his hair wasn’t bleached yet. Except for the highlighted fringe. I assume a color removing product was used to get most of the blue dye out, because he said he went blonde “for a day”, which doesn’t indicate fading to me.

The bleach blonde seem to stay for a while, because the next change is almost 3 months later. September 28 2013 brings the reveal of the smurf blue hair. This obviously fades over time, leaving a light, almost pastel blue color as seen in the screenshot I included from their Australia/New Zealand tour diary, opening for One Direction. As October 21 comes around we get a brand new color, bright pink! This faded into a pastel pink as can be seen in the screenshot from this thank you video, posted on November 24.

Up next is reverse skunk, as posted on instagram on November 26 2013. This seems to last a good while, because the next change doesn’t come until 2014, judging by this twitcam from January 18 where the reverse skunk hair is still present. February 10, is when this picture of the purple hair was posted. Moving on to March 21, we get dark red, or maybe dark brown with red highlights, it’s hard to pinpoint what exactly this color is. There is no instagram picture for this one, so I’ve used a screenshot from the 5SOS Livestream to show this one. While writing this I discovered in this video, posted on March 13. where his hair was also this color already. The 4th screenshot from the Don’t Stop video, to demonstrate how long their hair lasted. The video was released May 18 2014. So I’m assuming it was filmed somewhere in (late) April.

The next hair color in line is brown, the picture in this collage was posted to on May 18. However, going back through Michael’s instagram it seems like he already had this color at the start of the There’s No Place Like Home tour in Sydney, on April 30 2014. It’s likely he dyed it right before the start of  tour. The next change comes a little quicker, the earliest I could pinpoint this brown/blonde combo is May 18 at the Billboard music awards 2014. I can’t pinpoint, when exactly he got it done, but I’m assuming it was close before the BBMA’s. Moving on, we’re getting to the iconic green hair era. Again it’s hard to pinpoint when he exactly got it. There’s only 1 picture of it on his instagram, which was uploaded in July. The picture I used is from the Capital Summertime Ball 2014, held on June 21. The website describes it as “his new green hair”. So I’m assuming this is where he debuted it. After green we get this mystery lilac type color. I only found it in this Target Prank video on the 5SOS Youtube channel. Since they are promoting 5SOS1, which was released June 27, 2014, the video can be narrowed down to late June, early July of 2014. That’s as close as I could get it. I even went back to check if maybe they pre-filmed this in february/march and this was the faded purple hair, but the timeline still holds up.

September 1 2014 is when we see a new hair color appear on instagram. For (what appears to be) the video of Good Girls Michael bleached his hair to a white blonde. A better picture is the screenshot from the Good Girls video I included. The next change we see is on September 4 at the 5SOS performance for the iTunes festival 2014. This means that either he bleached his hair a while before September 1 or it was just a transition before the red with the orange undertone. This color fades throughout September judging by the pictures on instagram. I probably should have included one in here, but you can easily find them if you look for them. However on September 29 it seems the color got a refresh, looking nice and bright again.

The first picture in this collage, posted December 17 2014, shows the hair fading again. Then on December 18, at the People Magazine Awards the hair seems refreshed again. It looks to me as if the color has a slightly less orange undertone as well. But that’s hard to determine from 1 picture. The next picture, posted February 4 2015 shows the red has once again faded.  After the red he moves on to this purple color. The first time we see it on instagram is February 18 in a video from the studio. The picture used for illustration was posted on February 27. 

A better view of the violet/purple hair can be seen in the screenshot from the Japan Tour Diaries part 1. In part 2 you can already see the color fading again. The next picture, posted February 28 2015 shows and even more drastic fade, where his hair has turned almost blonde again. Then around March 15 his hair goes fully white blonde again. At the start of the ROWYSO tour in Portugal, May 4, Michael’s hair is still blonde. However 2 days later in Spain, on May 6, he seems to be back to a violet/blue color, like he had previously. 

Then May 24 2015 we move to the next change, (jet) black hair (sorry, it had to be done). On July 16 a touch of color is brought into the hair, with addition of a few colorful streaks in his fringe. right on time for the start of the next leg of the ROWYSO tour that starts in Las Vegas. On July 23 he seems to have added a feather extension in the mix. This may have just been a temporary thing, because I can’t find any further evidence of this beyond the 1 instagram picture. Then August 29 brings a drastic change. From black we move back to blonde.

The blonde seems to last for quite some time. Judging by this performance of Hey Everybody, his hair was still blonde on November 11 2015 (the video was uploaded on the day of the performance, I checked). But then November 22 brings us red hair at the American Music Awards. Judging by other pictures on his instagram this seems to be a more true (less orange) red than in 2014. The red slowly fades, first to a more orange toned color in Bali (picture posted January 2 2016). And eventually it fades all the way to blonde wint a soft hint of red/pink in the 3rd picture, posted January 25 2016. Shortly after he premieres a teal hair color at the G’day USA red carpet on January 28. 

The teal color sticks around for a while, even during the first leg of the SLFL tour. The last I saw of it was on March 12 2016, at the Philippines show. Then in between the Asian and Euopean leg the color changes from teal to brown, as seen at the Sheffield SLFL show on April 5. Then in the break between their last Dublin show (April 27) and their Vienna show (May 12) he bleaches his hair again. After this the era of Michael frequently coloring his hair seems to be done. He stays blonde, at some point he grows it out until only the long parts of his hair are still blonde. As can be seen in this picture posted on October 16 2017. Then at the start of the Meet You There Tour in Japan (August 2 2018) the colored hair makes a brief return with this pink moment. It doesn’t seem to last long however, since I can’t find a lot about it after Japan. So it may have been a temporary thing.

October 9 2018 he posts the first picture in this collage. It’s very possible this is faded pink from the previous picture. Or maybe he dyed it a lighter shade later on. After this the colored hair stops, but we do occasionally get various shades of blonde. The second picture, from November 16 2018, shows a caramel tone to his hair. In the third picture, posted on October 21 2018, we see sort of a dirty blonde. We end this timeline the way we started, back to natural hair. because of quarantine the bleached blonde grew out and eventually disappeared once he cut it. So we have come full circle. We started with natural hair and we are ending it with natural hair. If we get any more changes in the future I will be sure to add them to the timeline.

Finally, a few facts, for fun. 

In total, Michael has had 29 color changes in a span of roughly 8 years.* 

He’s had the most colors in 2013 and 2014 (both years he’s had 8 different colors)

The orange red was the color he had the longest, 150 days to be precise (based on the information available).

* Not counting fades or the “blonde for a day. Since they are part of 1 color or were just used to transition to another color. Also not counting the various shades of bleached blonde in the last collage, since it’s hard to tell if they are actually different, or if it’s light. I did count the transition from blonde to natural.

Kaylor Rises?

We’ll never know the mechanics or reasons for Joshlie going on a break (or even if they just decided to be more casual for a bit). Maybe it was Taylor related, maybe it was all the stuff with his family, maybe it was the spectre of differing religions, maybe it was the age gap, maybe he started to agree that a ‘lingerie model’ was unsuitable in the long run… But one fact we do know, from investigative journalism done on the Kushners and also from looking at contemporaneous gossip blogs is: Joshlie have taken breaks. We don’t know exactly exactly how many, or why. But we know that they did. Again, this is one of the biggest pieces of ‘evidence’ that they’re real because why bother faking problems and breaks? Why not present yourselves as head-over-heels? It doesn’t make sense, but it’s what happened. And it also opens the door to some romantic!Kaylor. And in March 2014, Josh disappears from the picture and Taylor is suddenly a massive presence - way beyond the fun, highkey promotion we saw up till now. 

1 March 2014 - We see Kaylor both attend a Pre-Oscar Party. I think a Joshlie break was what led Karlie to go to LA and stay with Taylor. At this stage, they’d known each other publicly for about five months but, if we factor in possible negotiations, they might have known each other for much longer. I really do think they were good friends by this stage, because Taylor is a terrible actress and they clearly really enjoyed each other’s company. It was as good a place as any for Karlie to go and lick wounds. 

2 March 2014 - Kaylor attend the Vanity Fair Oscar Party and the Vogue profile talks about this being where they connected and decided to do the road trip: “A few months later they saw each other again at an Oscars after-party, and Kloss suggested they do something spontaneous. “I’d been to Big Sur once before, and I was like, ‘We should just do it,’ ” says Swift.” I suspect this story is a bit of a lie - but I do think it is true that they hooked up around this time, and decided to take a road trip to Big Sur. Taylor had been there once before, with Jake Gyllenhaal. Karlie had never been. It’s interesting that for Taylor it was already a “romantic” place, at the very least publicly, and it’s where she decided to go with Karlie at this point. 

Also, in terms of the “lie” factor - they’re saying this is where they reconnected but they were partying together the literal night before. So they’re obviously blurring reality a bit in the interview. Which is okay, maybe they misremembered or misspoke. But when factored into a pattern, it seems an odd thing to get confused about. 

The road trip itself is ICONIC. Taylor allegedly plays Karlie the whole of 1989. They take a million gorgeous photos. The daisy thing happens. 

5 March 2014 - Karlie posts the ‘Karlie loves Taylor’ sand pic. Taylor likes.

24 March 2014 - Taylor diaries that she’s moved into her Tribeca apartment in the “last few weeks” which means they are in the same city and that, when Karlie was in LA, Tay was still permanently based there. 

1 April 2014 - Karlie attends The New Museum annual Spring Gala without Josh.

1 April 2014 - Josh attends a New York Observer event without Karlie. His family is out in full force - again, this is their family business. It’s actually really odd that he is there on his own. Oh, and by the way - Mikey Hess isn’t there either lmao. 

3 April 2014 - Kaylor go to the gym and then out for lunch at the Butcher’s Daughter (which, for the record, is very close to Josh’s apartment but since he and Karlie have not interacted publicly in well over a month that seems irrelevant). They are papped continuously on both halves of the date. 

14 April 2014 - Kaylor are papped in NYC.

21 April 2014 - Taylor is papped with Cara and the articles that follow are all about “gal pals”. I do not think Cara and Taylor were together at this point but it’s vital to see the rollout of the “Girl Squad” PR strategy. It was not just about Karlie. Karlie was meant to be the ‘main’ Squad girl, but there were others.

26 April 2014 - Kaylor are papped in NYC

2 May 2014 - Karlie brings Derek as her +1 to the memorial service for L’Wren Scott.

4 May 2014 - Karlie posts a photo of herself with Taylor and Kate Bosworth at The Jane Hotel for Harry Josh’s party.

5 May 2014 - Kaylor get ready together and then attend the Met together. Josh is also there with his brother and Ivanka. Kaylor interact with the Kushners because this photo gets taken. We also get this pic (peep Tay’s dress in the background). Karlie sits at a table with Josh, and Taylor sits very, very far away. (Here is a pic of them seated). Now, it’s possible the tickets were booked and the seating arrangements made well before Joshlie went on a break. Or it’s possible going there was just a stunt and Karlie and Josh were very much together.

If Josh was a beard contract, this would’ve been reversed. Karlie would have showed up and walked the red carpet with Josh and sat with Taylor once inside. Instead, Karlie was papped with Taylor on the outside, and sat in the cheap seats with Josh, on the other side of the room from Taylor, once inside. If Josh and Karlie both needed a beard, why would they allow Karlie to show up and walk the red carpet with her girlfriend when they both attended the event?

And here’s what’s interesting: Taylor references this evening extensively at the end of the Wildest Dreams MV. She closely replicates the outfits - Karlie’s, Josh’s and her own - and casts herself as the “other woman”. It’s a telling video because that twist in the end is not necessary for the song to make sense (at all), Tay’s character is hurt and surprised by the MV love interest having a partner, and in the end the love interest’s feelings seem genuine as he runs after her - but she’s already gone. It’s a pretty loud scene in all and I’m not sure how else to interpret it, really. It’s also interesting that Tay’s character in the video falls in love with her ‘onscreen’ partner - kind of how Kaylor probably started as somewhat scripted ‘Famous Friends’ but possibly grew feelings.

Taylor also references this evening in LWYMMD when a 2014 Met Taylor appears several times. A zombie Taylor wearing the dress she wore in the OOTW MV buries a Taylor wearing this 2014 Met Gala dress and later she appears again. Considering all the other “Taylors” are extremely iconic (for example Kanye interrupting dress), I’m not sure why 2014 Met Gala Tay is here. It’s not the best example of one of her princess dresses… It’s not indicative of an ‘era’...

Unless the evening was important to Taylor herself, and the most logical reason for that would be Joshlie. It seems that this was the night that Tay, like her character in the MV, found herself cast in the unfortunate role of “other woman” - a part she would have struggled with ever since. So, with that in mind, here are some photos of Kaylor from that night where Taylor looks miserable: x x x

CONCLUSION: From late February/early March it seemed as though Kaylor were together and possibly exclusive or at least getting somewhat serious. However, in early May Josh and Karlie reconnected around the time of the Met Gala - that’s what the Wildest Dreams MV seems to suggest at least. The fact that they interacted and sat together despite not apparently going ‘together’ is very loud. 

However, Joshlie were not fully back together at this Met Gala stage. I believe they reunited proper only at the end of May, at which point the Kaylor dynamic shifted gears.

However… the contract for the publicity deal was still in place and they had to carry on carrying on. It’s telling that their respective close friends didn’t exactly warm up to one another - their personal friend groups never really meshed. This contradicts the het narrative of them being just extremely great friends. If they really were, why wouldn’t they be hanging out with each other’s main people (in very simple terms, people like Derek and Abigail)? And before you @me, a few likes are not great evidence of hangouts - Josh also liked a bunch of Tay’s posts, and it’s pretty clear they were never friends.

More likely, Karlie and Taylor hooked up… And, of course, Karlie was an important part of this era’s publicity rollout. And that’s where things got messy.

Goof Week: Goofy Birthday Shortstacular!

Hyuck all you happy people! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY GOOFY! The celebration already got on track today with a look at the two part goof troop pilot. You can find that here.  

That review kicked off GOOF WEEK my weeklong look at all things Goofy, but as is tradition on this blog the birthday of one of the big three wouldn’t’t be complete without a look at their theatrical shorts career. And with this one i’ve covered all three of Disney’s biggest stars having covered Donald last june (and will again next month) and Mickey in September so it’s long overdue that my boy gets a shot and even longer overdue I watched some of his classic shorts. 

A large part of why I started doing these is because I love classic theatrical shorts and the reason I love looking at the Disney ones is, unlike Looney Toons or Tom and Jerry, I didn’t grow up with these and Disney never replayed them. At most you’d get one or a small slice of one in a House of Mouse episode. So this is a fun way to dive right into history and see a piece of Disney I’ve only started scratching the surface of. 

This is a fun one too. I ended bumping this up to 12 shorts again, and i’m glad as it allowed me to take a look at some of the weirder stuff and we go all over the place: We have dancing, goofy begging for a smoke, goofy devlopnig a split personality that calls him fat a bunch, a prototypical max who is a LOT, trips to medevil times and cowboy times, a tex avery esque noir short, and the lead in short to National treasure. If any of that sounds like a real good time to you, then keep reading under the cut!

Mickey’s Revue (1933)

Goofy was created by his VA Pinto Colvig, who based the character on the local happy go lucky moron from his home town, and after a dicussion with Walt it was decided to roll him into Mickey’s growing supporting cast. 

My guess from here is they decided to do a dry run to make sure the character worked with audeinces before giving him a full time roll. Given Goofy’s been both a staple of Mickey’s supporting cast and often more popular than the mouse or even the duck, you can see how that went. 

Colvig was awesome. While Bill Farmer is my preferred Goofy, I still tip my hat to the original and it’s clear this was a character he was born t play and it shows: a lot of characters take a short or too to really find their personality. Goofy.. has his early shorts persona straight out of the box> The only weird thing is he’s an ol dman here.. but otherwise his schick here, loudly eating peanuts, laughing a bit too loud and annoying everyone around him with no genuine malice.. that’s Goofy and Pinto really hit onto something and as we’ll see today had a TON of range beyond this. 

As for the rest of the short.. it’s forgetable. It’s not BAD, but it’s just Mickey and friends capering on stage. Nothing really out of the oridnary for these early Mickey Shorts, especially since some of them could get really damn creative.

The Whoopee Party (1933)

Now we have Goofy’s first proper appearance, going from joke character in the crowd to full member of Mickey’s friend group. 

This one is also just okay, but better than the last: Mickey and friends throw a wild party, with Mickey, Goofy and Horace making the sammiches. Goofy dosen’t do much btu gets a good gag or two, and overall it’s alright. Enjoyabl efor it’s lively animation and not much else. 

Goofy and Wilbur (1936) Three years later we get Goofy’s proper debut, a cute short about him using his Cricket friend to fish. That’s not the exestitnal nightmare that it sounds like mind you as Wilbur simply tricks them into Goofy’s net an donly gets eaten when they catch on and Goofy runs to his aid. The short really is more about Wilbur but it’s fair: like with Donald , who was paired with Pluto in his first solo short, they wanted to test the waters before having Goofy carry a cartoon himself. As we’ll see he very well could, but it’s fair to want ot backdor pilot it first and it’s easily one of the best shorts of today’s batch.

How to Play Baseball (1937)

First off while they make a good effort I already know how ot play baseball short...

How To Play Baseball is my faviorite of the Goofy Shorts on Disney Plus, which is a VERY small batch. Especailly since most of Today’s shorts aren’t at all problematic or inapproriate for kids. This one is a gem though. It’s one of the How To Shorts where a narrator goes ove rgoofy trying and failing at an activity though this one’s a tad diffrent. 

 The How To Narrator teaches us about baseball before narrating the world series game. It’s full of cleve slapstick, high speed animation and plain fun. It’s also part of the trend that would dominate Goofy’s sports career of putting him in whatever roll the shorts needed. Here he’s everyone at once, others he’s his old goofy self, other time sh’es just a normal joe. But Colvig does every version amazingly, so it all meshes and that general goofy design is so appealing it just WORKS.  So yeah while i’m not into sports I do genuinely love the How To shorts, as they were my faviorite part of House of Mouse and still are, and the originals are every bit as classic as their reputation says they are. 

A Knight For A Day (1946)

This one is the only other one of these on Disney Plus and it’s decent enough. Nothing incredibble or extra specail: Goofy plays a Squire who has to fil lin for his Knight in a tournament and tries to win a princesses hand against another douchier goofy. Simple stuff iwth some fun gags, but it just dosen’t feel all that fresh, especially since Disney already did a much better shorts with knights with Mickey’s “Ye Olden Days”. It just dosen’t feel as fun or creative as that one was btu on it’s own it’s fine. Nothing great, nothing terrible, just fine. First short of the day to feature Goofy’s faceless blonde love interest who in domestic shorts is his wife and by the same extension Max’s now dead mother. 

Tomorrow We Diet (1951)

We’ve got three from 1951 here. By this point Goofy had traditioned from lovable bumbler to every man, taking on a more generalized personality to fit into every day slice of life scenarios, using those to brilliantly contrast the goofy animated comedy with the more mundane setting it comes from. And sometimes it’s just straight up sticom humor with the ocasoinal joke you could only do in a cartoon.  And sometimes.. you get a version of Goofy who lives in a mirror taunting Goofy over being fat and then trying to keep him on his diet while it’s not clear if thi sis a split personality, a mirror ghost tormenting him that took his form and is doing this so Goofy breaks the mirror and frees him, or his evil doppleganger from another universe. 

Yeah .. one of the centerpieces of this short is Goofy’s reflection/split personality/earth 3 doppleganger/some sort of evil genie taunt shim abotu the fact he’s putting on weight startnig by saying “Hey Fat”... because apparently in this unvierse the best weight joke they can come up with is literally just calling someone fat. I bet I know who rules THIS timeline with an iron fist....

The first half of this short is Goofy being told he’s fat by a bunch of people and the second half is his hallucination/psychotic break/guardian asshole tormenting him with the diet. And I do mean tormenting: He knocks away all of Goofy’s food, then suggests he not even eat his carrot and STARVE himself, which is just deeply unhealthy, and earlier forces Goofy to let him read his book and then tell shim to just diet anyway. Which granted dieting IS sensible.

So yeah this short as you can probably guess by the fact it involves the term “Hey Fat” which was only said by a human being once.. Dick Kinney or Mick Shaffer, the writers of ths short,  when one pitched the line to the other and they laughed for some reason and put it in the script. But with that you can wager this short is REALLY outdated> Overating CAN be a problem and fat shaming still exists, but it’s far less tolerated and far less of a thing.

And hell I can tolerate a good natured weight joke, the Critic had some great ones, especially as a fat guy myself... but this isn’t good natured. The entire joke is, as the man said above HE’S FAT.. So as a legit short. it’s deeply unfunny at best, horribly insulting at worst. But as a so bad it’s good short? it’s GOLD. From the whole mirror goofy thing, to the fact fat is seen as a legit insult here or something to just call fat people because that’s what the writers thoguht humans, even in the 50′s talked like it’s just riffably cruel.. though it will obviously depend onthe viewers tolerance for both fat jokes and how creepy the short can be and again as a short it sucks. As something to be mocked for fun.. it’s fat with potential

Father’s Are People (1951)

Hey Kids you wanna see Max and Goofy reenact Problem Child? 

Given I did Goof Troop earlier this week and i’m finishing this week with A Goofy Movie, it shouldn’t come as a huge shocker that I wanted to cover the first short with Goofy’s son Juinor, who’d later be remolded into Max. 

The short STARTS promising with Goofy having a kid and the hyjinks that comes from having a baby child: Goofy passes out Cigars because Lung Cancer was the preferred way of celebrating having a child in the 50′s, runs himself ragid helping out, which I give the short credit for as “Donald’s Diary” three years later would play a man helping a woman around the house for horror. Here George (Goofy would often go by George Geef in later shorts) pitches in and while he’s clearly exausted he is trying to help with the boy. 

It takes a turn though once we jump ahead to a toddler Junior. Seriously a red head named junior... there’s no way that’s a coincidence. Anyways, the problem is unlike problem child, where Junor dosen’t really go after his dad but the assholes around his pushover dad who genuinely deserve it, this Junior goes after Goofy who at wors tis mildly negelectful but clearly loves his boy> He also DOES try to take a brus hto the kid... but it’s hard to be too mad about that as it was acceptable at the time and he dosen’t actually paddle a three year old. It’s like a less horrfying version of donald puttin ga penguin to a shotguns face in that the targeted party dosen’t see the threat and that goofy isn’t some form of sociopath in this short like Donald was there. It’s just not very funny and only worth watching at all for the historical value. 

No Smoking! (1951) (Patreon Selection by WeirdKev27)

This is my first of two Patreon selections, my patreon is here if you want to chip in a buck to pick a short for Donald’s birthday next month, by longtime friend and backer of the blog Kev. He suggested this one for the sheer absurdity of Goofy smooking.. and was right on the money> This one is DELGITHFUL. 

It works on two levels: it works on the modern level of seeing such an iconic cartoon grapple with trying to quit smoking, first smoknig so constantly a giant cloud appears over him and he has about 80 cigs in his mouth at once, but then trying to quit and being surrounded bycigs before finally DESPERATELY begging for one. As I discovered you really HAVEN’T lived till you’ve heard goofy madly call out “Smoke, smoke gotta have a smoke”. 

But while the novelty IS great.. it’s also just a good cartoon. Outside of some blatant racisim at the start, with a native american sterotype introducing smoking to colmbus which feels so wrong to type I need a shower and really puts a damper on the short which after that.. is just really funny. From the smoking through the ages, to the very creative smoking gags it’s just fun.. and it is CLEARLY anti-smoking, showing both the insane amount of cigrte smoker can go through and how mad the addiction can drive you. It’s not bad... though if you can’t stomach the blatant and terrible racisim.. I get that and it’s fair. 

Two Gun Goofy (1952)

This is one of two “put Goofy in another setting all together” pieces, both in the same year which tells me they were trying to find new stuff to do for Goofy. Thi sisn’t unheard of in cartoons: Around the same time and before Bugs Bunny went all over the world and thorugh time and space, and Mickey went through the looking glass and had two fantasy shorts, so i’ts not unusual

But what IS neat about these next two shorts is they combined the two goofys: he has his goofy demanor and oblivoiusness from the classic shorts, but still has his deeper, slightly less goofy voice from the everyman shorts and is still treated as an average joe, just one now undertaking genre careers, here a cowboy and next a detective

This short is decent. I’m a sucker for cowboy episodes apparently: either old west style showdowns or having the characters go to a dude ranch or something. So naturally I picked this one and was told Max was in it an dhe is... in a two second cameo when Goofy has a thought bubble after meeting faceless lady.

But this is a really enjoyable picture. not Disne’y sbest but good stuff. It also pairs Goofy with pete which really is a perfect pairing, putting our scowling rotund villian against our skinny well meaning hero. And while i’ts a common gag in a lto of things I do love Goofy accidently beating the shit out of pete as the short finds fun ways to do it. All in all worth a watch. 

How to Be a Detective (1952)

This one was a REALLY fun one. Like with westerns i’m a sucker for a good noir parody, even if ironically I haven’t watched much of either genre proper. Add in the fact this is clearly inspiried by Tex Avery’s work and i’m sold on this fun madcap romp with an approraitely more noirsh narrator. 

Goofy is naturally a detective and hired by the faceless woman to find “Al” having to contend with both a goon he keeps failing to recognize and The Chief of Police, played by Pete, who keeps telling him “I told ya to stay off the case Goof!”. It’s just the delivery makes it funny any time he says it as does his instance... and the punchline, which I won’t spoil to both that an dthe overaching mystery i sa gem. This one’s on youtube, seek it out, it’s damn fun. Before I go thoguh I also love how Goofy is Given “Goof Balls”. Yes GOOFY GETS DRUGGED and I am here for it

Father’s Day Out (1953)

I couldn’t find any GIF’s for this one, not even one’s in teh same tag that were unrelated so here, have more smoking Goofy. It will never not be funny.

This one is ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhtastic. Goofy is overworked, wnats to rest on his weeknd, and stuff gets in the way. Oh and halfway through he abrubtly has to take Max to the beach. It’s.. not much honestly. It’s like the simpsons if it wasn’t funny. 

How To Hook Up Your Home Theater (2007) (Emma Fici Patreon Selection)

You may notice the MASSIVE time jump here. That’s because while Disney still does theatrical shorts nowadays, in part because Pixar’s shorts turned out to be a huge hit, they almost never use the classic cast. This delightful anamoly is one of the few exceptions and was picked by Emma out of sheer curosity. And she picked well this short is fun, feelnig like a big budget version of the House of Mouse How To Shorts I loved so an dhaving a modern yet still ultimatley timeless subject: while the tech featured is missin ga streaming box and 4k, otherwise it really has aged incredibly well and getting all the diffrent modes set up and what not is a hassel we al lcan agree with. 

It’s a fun short with lots of good gags and humor as Goofy tries to set up his Home Theater before the big game, and worth a watch. Weirdly not on Disney+ though try explaining that one. 

One final note is for whatever reason this was paired up with National Treasure: Book of Secrets. 

My BEST GUESS i sthat it appeals to the kinds of dads who’d watch National Traesure: Book of Secrets as well as kids since it’s an adventure film. Though it now makes me want to see Nicholas Cage voice goofy. Get on it Disney. Not forever though, Bill’s a treasure. Just for a gag like Don Cheadle vocing Donald.. oh god put them together.. and then have them do a movie together I don’t think they have and do not know why.

For the record despite not being a GOOD short Tommorow we diet is at least intresting, hence i’ts ranknig while Father’s weekend is just a boring 50′s version of problem child. Fathers are People at least has some good gags to set it off.

手紙を受け取った - I got a Letterようこそ

It truly is amazing how the brain can quite literally just decide to devise new projects then suddenly give itself an unstoppable craving to do it. I guess that's what this blog will be. A way to settle my craving for three things. A diary to reflect back on in roughly 2023, an incredibly simple memory tool for certain words and just a place to post random rubbish in relation to current on-going events.For a little background, I've been doing casual learning of Japanese for roughly a year now. I decided to take it seriously by pursuing a dream of quitting my job and going to University as well as participate in a 'night school' course for an entry-level 3 Certification in Practical Japanese. In a good turn of events, I was accepted into University (though with the current situation it seems that will be most likely be disrupted) and achieved that level 3 certification! As such, this blog will mostly be a small compendium of random words and their explanations as well as (when the time comes) my time In Japan. If all goes to plan and assuming the world does not end, I should be there for a year of study in 2021. Not going to lie, going from enjoying Japanese games as a child to completing a level 3 with horizons of actually moving there for a year is daunting hence why I'm so eager to get to at least a decent degree.As for where I am now, I can read both hiragana and katakana to a good level and each day I make the attempt to pick up more kanji to add to my vocabulary.

 It's very much like collecting pokemon and makes all the difference reading a sentence and not being thrown off by a random 美 or 森本. It's my actual speaking which requires practice so hopefully, I'll have willing speaking partners in Uni...Hopefully...Funnily enough, the kanji I use most in my user name is 雨 mostly because I enjoy how much it actually looks like rain. It was also the first kanji I ever learned, something which I believe my cousin told me around age 7. To be honest, he was the one that introduced me to some classic Japanese games as a child and is probably the reason for all of this. Boom. Butterfly effect.The Silent Hill reference for this blog post is not just because I'm listening to Akira Yamaoka but rather something else for this blog. Since my work is shut, I'm earning furlough pay however that doesn't mean I've personally stopped working. After completing some work for my Father, I decided to buy the novel version of Silent Hill 2. To my knowledge, there is not an English official translation of this book, and it's actually quite rare in western countries. It will be arriving from Japan so I'm very uncertain when it will arrive. Regardless, I want to make it my long and extensive project to translate two pages a day. It will be a major learning experience for me and once complete I can post it here. I hope that's legal. It's for educational purposes so. I'll probably make a blog post about Silent Hill 2, I rate it one of the greatest games of all time.Anyway, that's it from me, expect a post tomorrow and I'll see you then.手紙 =  Tegami. Hello loves!  If you’re still following me, may I just say thank you for your patience.  I know it has been too long since I have created one of my review posts.  I can only apologize.  I love you all, but I needed a break.  So I was gone for a while.  When I came back – the fandom had changed.  Mostly, people just changed their names, actually.  But it took me a while to find everyone.  And, of course, new people had joined the fandom – or at least I was introduced to people – so they’re new to me.  

I’m going to organize this by book instead of by love interest because some authors are keeping the pairings a secret and I don’t want to ruin their surprise.

I don’t think I’m back up to reading 80 fics a week … but I do think I’ve read quite a few (too many?) fics this week.  Let’s find out how many, shall we?

The characters in this story are pure, beautiful, supportive, strong, and loving.  I have fallen in love with Liam and with Bastien in this story – and I know with certainty that this wasn’t the author’s intention – but I also know she fully supports falling in love with these characters.  Of course, if you’re a Drake fan (as I am) this series will make you happy also.  It’s not a love triangle and yet I still felt so much of that drama that I love in these stories. This series is drama at it’s BEST.  The drama doesn’t come from misunderstandings but from the plot. It’s not over – but it will be soon.  So catch up!

Despite the author being drunk when she wrote this fic and named her character the wrong name – this is a hot story about a much tougher Minah (Myrah) who is flirting with danger when she flirts with Vince.

Only the First of Many (https://walkerismychoice.tumblr.com/post/182799720138/only-the-first-of-many-ernest-sinclaire-x-mc) by @walkerismychoice  As the author says – this is a retelling of the diamond scene from book 2 chapter 9 but from Ernest’s POV.  This is a sweet, hot, tender, and a beautiful rendition.  If you didn’t buy that chapter – this is a great way to read it. If you did – this is an even better way to relive it.

Oh shit!  I read 89 fics this week!  Granted 46 of them were one series, but I still!  I commented and reblogged 89 fics.  I guess I have to say – I’m back baby!

But seriously – I probably will not be able to maintain this pace.  I have to actually read a book next week.  LOL

How to Use Google Reader to Quickly Find and Share Content

These days continuously sharing great content with your social media fans and followers is pretty much a requirement to maintain a social online presence.  By sharing good content (other than your own), you build credibility with the people who follow you.  After all, don’t your fans and followers deserve something more than just the occasional sales pitch?

Okay, so as online business owners it’s easy to understand why we need to share content.  The real question is:  How can we do it efficiently?  With the bucket-loads of blogs and Web 2.0 sites out there, finding good quality content to share can be a real “time suck” not to mention overwhelming and exhausting.

Google Reader to the Rescue

If you know how to use Google Reader properly, it can be an excellent time saving tool to help you find the most up-to-date content for social sharing or even curating for your own blog posts.  After all, why should you have to search for content when it can be delivered to you?

If you’re not familiar with Google Reader, or feed readers in general, just know that feed readers allow you the ability to subscribe to your favorite RSS feeds.  If you follow 20 different blogs for example, you can view updates for all 20 blogs in one central location.  In addition to blogs, you can also subscribe to social profiles, Google alerts, Craigslist searches, forums, etc. pretty much anything that has RSS enabled.

Before you can get started subscribing to feeds, you will obviously need a Google account if you don’t already have one.  You should be able to sign up right from www.google.com/reader.

So here we go.  As usual you have your choice of video, text or (better yet) both.

Finding and Subscribing to Feeds

When looking for feeds to subscribe to, make sure you select feeds from good quality sources that are in or at least similar to your niche.  Select feeds that your target audience will enjoy reading.

If you’re not in the internet marketing/make money online niche, or you just want to build your own subscriptions, here is a non-exhaustive list of sites to find quality blog feeds:

Google Blog Search

Subscribing to a blog feed is easy, or at least it should be.  Look for an orange RSS  icon on a blog you wish to subscribe to.  Most sites have one but some don’t.  If you can’t find the RSS icon, sometimes it works to add “/feed” (without the quotes) to the end of the site’s main URL.  If it works correctly you should see a XML version of the site.

Just copy the feed URL and then click the “Subscribe” button in Google Reader, paste in the URL and click “Add”.

If you want to make quick work of the process of subscribing to feeds, do yourself a favor and install the Chrome Reader extension for Google Chrome.  This gives you the ability to subscribe to and manage feeds right from Chrome’s browser bar.

In addition to blog feeds, why not subscribe to the social feeds for the people you follow the most?  You can add the feeds to receive updates for anyone’s Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, YouTube, Ezinearticles, etc. profiles.  Just don’t be a social stalker.

If you’re wondering where to find the RSS feeds for social accounts, check out this article by Derek Armson of APD Internet Marketing.  He put a lot of time and research into finding these feeds so leave him a nice little comment while you’re there.

Organizing Your Feeds

Once you get a good number of feed subscriptions it can begin to get really messy if you don’t keep them properly organized.  I suggest organizing your feeds into different categories right off the bat.

This can be easily done by creating folders named after your categories.

Just click the little black arrow to the right of the desired feed and select “New folder”.

Since feeds can be organized in multiple different folders, it might make sense to create a separate folder that combines all the feeds together in every category.   This would allow you to browse, search and sort all feeds at once.

As you browse through your feeds you may occasionally come across posts or articles that you would like to revisit at a later time.  When this happens, consider tagging these posts with “Revisit”.  This will give you easy access to them later.  Otherwise they may be difficult to find if they are buried among the stream of updates.

Just click “Add tags” at the end of the post and assign a name to the tag.  Just remember to tag future posts that you want to revisit with the same tag name.

If you’re wondering what the difference is between folders and tags, folders are for organizing feeds.  They will automatically update when a new post is published.  Tags are used for categorizing and organizing individual posts.

Finding Content to Share

Okay, so you’ve done a whole bunch of work.  You’ve added dozens if not hundreds of feeds.  You’ve organized them into different folders and you are floating down a rapidly flowing river of never-ending content.  Now what?

I like to begin my quest for content by changing Google Reader to “List View”.  This minimizes the posts so that only the headlines will be visible.

I then select my desired folder and sort by “newest”.

This is the best way I have found to find the most recently published up to the minute content.  Just simply browse for headlines that sound interesting.

You can also sort the list by the “oldest” posts.  This lists all of the posts in reverse order starting from 30 days prior.  This is very useful if you are generating a list of the best blog posts of the month for example.

You also have the option to sort the list by “magic”.  This means Google Reader will sort the posts based on what it thinks you enjoy reading.  It uses information about your past reading behavior and your history for starring and sharing content.  So make sure you “star” the items that you really like.

In addition to sorting and browsing, Google Reader also has many different search options available.  By clicking the drop down menu on the right side of the search bar, you have the ability to search all items, read items, starred items or recommended items.  You can also search individual feeds or folders.

Not all Google search operators will work with Google Reader but you can still use:  “ ” (phrase search), the vertical pipe | (or), and the * (word wildcard).

Sharing the Content

At this point you should be finding a lot of good content that your fans and followers are going to love you for, but what is the most efficient way to share it?  After all, this article is about improving your social media workload, right?

Well, if you’re a Google Plus user, you have it pretty easy.  Just click the “G+ Share” button at the end of every post.

But what if you want to share it to Facebook, Twitter, or somewhere else instead?

Easy enough, just go to Reader Settings.

Then click the “Send To” tab and check the boxes on every social site that you want the ability to share to.  You can also create a custom link if you would like to send content to your blog for example.

Now go back to Google Reader and you will see a “Send to” option below the posts that will allow you to send the content to any social site that you have enabled.

So that about wraps it up.  Hopefully this article helps to lower your social workload so you can spend more time focusing on other things.

Yes, it’s true.  It can take a bit of time up front to subscribe and organize all the feeds but if you’re willing to make that initial time investment then you will more than make up for it in the long run.  Besides, if you are in the internet marketing niche then you have NO EXCUSES because I have already done the hard part for you.  Just subscribe to the feed bundles below.

Anatomy lesson, Chicago Indian Latin wedding included!

I’ve started to realize my blog post are becoming more and more like diary entries lately and so I’m going to embrace this instead of trying to avoid it! I began this chapter with the intention to break down the various components of an Indian wedding including the super exuberant baraat through the Ganesh Puja and onto the ceremony under the mandap. I wanted to compare and contrast the traditions of South Asian weddings to other cultures and highlight how same they really are; there are loads of parallels including the pre-parties i, mandap to the chuppa, the #bridetribe, etc, etc but I changed course on this entry about halfway through my first draft. Instead, I want to focus not on the anatomy, per se, but the extremities that hold together a union, any union in fact.

When I sit down to write, I pause about every 5-10 minutes not only because I have the attention span of a gnat but also so I can review our team’s photo captures to be sure what I am writing is parallel to what we’ve shot. I started to notice many of the shots I chose for our blog post outside of my favorite portraits - face forward captures of people- are shots featuring hands and feet. After taking another break to pontificate about the possibility of a hand or foot fetish, I realized that quite literally, the hands hold the union together and the feet carry it to the next adventure and thus did not edit my photo selections. So, dear diary, I want to divulge my admiration of the ways that we hold onto love and take it to the next level.

That sweet biology based, old Roman idea that rocking your diamond on your left hand was anatomically correct based on that fourth finger’s job to house the one vein directly to your heart is just a little bit outdated and also not entirely correct; as it turns out all fingers have veins that run to your heart! So really one could don wedding rings on any or all of your fingers if it is truly to express a union coming from the heart, right?! Alas, ever the hopeless romantic waiting for my chance to rock a diamond and a big fan of shiny distractions, let’s get back to the topic on hand, shall we?? Hands are, indeed, an extension of our hearts, whether we are speaking anatomically, metaphysically or just as an accessory. We extend our hand to greet one another with handshakes, high fives and even hold hands to show our intimacy with someone dear to us. It seems fitting then that our grip on life, love and all things physical are ‘held close’, be it in the ‘palm of your hand’ or one even could be ‘wrapped around your finger!’. I love all these references to ‘handling’ love and how we have a ‘hand in’ making our own choice in love.

Certainly in Indian culture, choice in your partner is not traditionally the way marriages have been made. Lucky for Veronica + Kapil, their getting together was kismet when the stars aligned them on Coffee Meets Bagel. Her traditional Latin roots paired with his Indian heritage made way for this really unique, cultural fusion of a wedding where East meets West, and you know how we love a good cultural exchange!! Hand in hand, these two made really sweet intentions of unifying their very different families into one big celebration that ultimately showed more similarity than difference. In a time when small variations cause major riffs, it’s so important that we handle the opportunities to come together in the most conscious ways we can. We, too, have a hand in making choices that can lead us forward instead of backward. And our sweet couple did that so perfectly on their wedding weekend! From the pre-party at the mariachi lead sangeet all the way to the wedding reception dance floor where Kapil’s parents celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary, the spirit of love of was handled so kindly and so perfectly.

And dance they did! There were many sweet moments captured on the dance floor including breaks for samba, bhangra and even some sweet beats from Bruno Mars. I have not soon forgotten about the multitude of good footwear at this awesome wedding. Kapil made certain his crew of dapper groomsmen could stand up for him in comfort throughout the day and gifted all the guys a pair of classic, Air Jordans! After all, #Chicago ya’ll! Even Veronica kicked off her high heels and rocked a pair of her own Nike’s and helped keep the dance floor energy all the way up!!

They say feet are your biggest access point to the rest of your body as the pores on your tootsies are the largest. It is also said that the reflexology which connects your hands and feet to other organs in your body can truly help circulation not to mention your connection to the rest of your body. Obviously, I’m no Dr. Oz but having been a wedding photographer for the last decade, I’ve become very versed in the world of post-wedding foot rubs so I can walk again in the days following. That said, a proper pair of shoes for all night dancing or just for fashion's sake is always a great idea in my book. Again, fashion and function are totally able to live in the same arena and especially if that ballpark has you dancing with your boo! And so far as feet carrying us forward to other amazing adventures off of the dance floor, let’s go ahead and be hopeless romantics together, shall we? I know you clicked on that Bruno Mars link and are singing along. It’s totally cool!

Hello! Welcome to my blog, I guess. Does this really need an introduction if the audience will probably be just me and the odd explorer (?) who randomly finds this? Anyway, I wanted to start this “diary” thing (log? I don’t know, I haven’t planned that far) because life has been extremely difficult these past few months and while I’m simultaneously moderately impressed at how long I’ve held on for without doing much, I realize that I’m definitely breaking apart and my mind is going haywire. I mean, just 10 minutes ago the idea of shaving my head popped into my head because tying my hair back by my neck made me look ugly. And that’s definitely not something my usual rational self would even dream of because I’ve worked so hard (more like waited so long) to get rid of all of the layers.

I don’t know where I’m going with this. It sounded a lot better in my head 4 hours ago when I was driving back from Waterloo (where I go to school -- my family lives in Toronto, about 1.5 hours away). I think I even came up with a few topics I wanted to talk about, since I don’t really have anyone to talk to these days and my mind just feels so cooped up and trapped. This thought is kind of paradoxical to me sometimes because I crave deep social interactions where I can talk about anything that’s on my mind, and when that happens I can probably talk for a while, yet I very much enjoy silence and definitely get tired of hanging out with people after a certain amount of time -- like an introvert. But I feel extremely lonely and get bored quickly when I’m alone.

I don’t know how much censorship to put into these entries. I would love to be straight up and just use names as is, but there’s always the risk someone I know will find this and spread shit around and I’m tired of that. And who knows, maybe I’ll post it to some social media account just so somebody (anybody) I know can read it and gain insight into my life and maybe offer me the odd piece of advice or comfort I need. I think I’ll keep all names private. But if you’re reading this and you know the story, don’t be a little shit. These are my words and feelings and unfortunately if they don’t sit well with you, bring it up to me privately. Don’t spread it around and ruin lives (mainly mine)... I’m sick and tired of that happening.

Anyway, onto the first story I suppose. Oh actually sorry I have something else, more like a note. I’m writing this somewhat spontaneously, as I’m pretty much just typing up whatever I say in my head. So I guess just pretend I’m having a deep talk or something with you, because that’s what most of this stuff will be… deep talks.

Ok back to what I was getting at -- first story. What to choose? There are so many. I would like to write about what happened two nights ago (because to be honest that’s what has been running through my mind since then and ruining my mind), but I don’t think that’s a good story to start off with LOOOOL. I think I’ll start with home.

Home to me has a lot of meanings. People always say “home is where the heart is” and I think that is the phrase I associate with home maybe 95% of the time (ok I came up with a random number because I knew I had another side to this but it’s not coming to me at the moment). I think I spend a lot of time thinking about the concept of home. Personally, I don’t think I have a location (like a city) I can call home. I don’t think that there’s somewhere I can see myself (or with a partner, if anyone will ever like my depressive ass -- ok disclaimer I have more sides to me I promise I’m just in a bubble of suffering right now) for an extended period of time. “Settling down”, I mean. Might be a combination of my feeling towards family (story for another time, it’s long and controversial), straight up lack of travelling/knowledge about other places, and how young I still am (I’m 22, I don’t think “settling down” is something I really need to care about?).

When I was in high school, I knew that I didn’t want to go a university in Toronto. I didn’t have a great home life in high school, and desperately wanted to go somewhere far but not too far. So I decided to go to UW -- a reputable, relatively new university with coloured faculties (who doesn’t like colour? To be honest I think that was what attracted me the most at first), and a dance community I could probably find my way into to improve my skills (their competitive dance team had won first place in a well-known competition the previous year, and I had been training in urban dance for approximately 2 years back then). So Waterloo became my home away from home and will still be until I finish up my undergrad (in 8 months!!!) and then I’ll move back to Toronto for approximately 3-4 months until I go to London for my Master’s program (assuming I snag one of the 6 spots -- I’m getting nervous just thinking about it). Waterloo has been great for the most part, but has turned sour since the beginning of the year (drama with friends who I lived with; a story for another time, though I’ve tried to forget about it because it hurt me so much). I knew I wasn’t going to be here for a long time (5 years isn’t that long), but I know it’ll always have a special spot in my heart because of all the amazing people I’ve met here.

Sorry, my thoughts can get a little fragmented and sentence cohesion and paragraph closure sometimes suffer... Revision usually catches that, but this isn’t some fancy thing so I’m sorry for everything above and everything to come~

I mostly think about home when I think about Shanghai or when people ask me where I was born. I love being asked about my birthplace but I hate the question that always follows: “When did you come to Canada?” because that always (or usually, I shall not assume) leads people to see me as Canadian-born because I came over when I was 8 months old. I absolutely hate this. It’s actually one of my pet peeves, because I actually feel very connected to Shanghai and always long to go back. I think because my parents made the decision somewhat spontaneously (their life wasn’t extravagant back in China and my uncle was willing to sponsor their immigration so they decided to come over), I feel that I was “robbed” (not really robbed but I can’t think of a better word right now) of a life I could’ve easily lived. I think this is why I prefer living like a local when I go back to visit, because I want to experience the life I never had. And it’s a super convenient one! Why can’t everything be cheaper, transit more extensive, tech more advanced?! Sigh. Another perk of going back is being forced to be offline from social media. It really taught me to just enjoy life and not wait on other people to make things happen. Though I’d love to live in Shanghai, there are so many barriers to deal with. Like the language. I’m not terrible at Chinese, but it’s still relatively poor and translating it from Shanghainese (which I’m much better at but is pretty much dead for people below my age -- thanks government!!!) doesn’t always work. I also dislike speaking it because I’m not confident at all. There’s also the issue of having too much family there (literally all of my relatives), so it’ll never really feel like I’m independent (especially being the youngest cousin, oh lord I’ll always be a baby). I guess even though it’ll always be a place I love, it wouldn’t serve as a place I’d live for a long time (I don’t think I’d last a year there, if I’m being honest about it).

I guess talking about more spiritual homes, I’ve said before that I love having deep talks. I love it when people are comfortable enough with each other that they are willing to share bits and pieces of their private lives, and these are the relationships I crave, though they are the hardest to find and the most painful to lose. I don’t have people I can truly call home anymore. It was my boyfriend for 1.5 years but we broke up halfway through July (another story, wow!). Some of my friends (not anymore, they’re avoiding me) were home to me but obviously not anymore. I recently joined another group of people who like to dance but I still don’t feel like I’m a part of the group (despite how much time I spend with them) because of a couple of reasons, but I think they’re wary about truly accepting me because of my previous attitudes towards them (I had personal reasons as to why I didn’t want to join them but they just know that I didn’t want anything to do with them for a long time) and because for some members my reputation precedes me (mainly because of those personal reasons but also because I was a huge influence on the urban dance community here #successstory -- just kidding, I was overthrown).

Something I’d love to do is to just start somewhere new where nobody knows me, where my reputation doesn’t precede me, and just live life how I want it. There’s so many things I’m scared to do because of social barriers. But I guess there’s also things I’m scared of doing alone (like dining and clubbing). I can never win, haha.

How do I end this thing, do I need a name? I was thinking about this earlier and was trying to come up with some online alias that I don’t predictably use. I decided on using Tori, which is the name I use for my Pokemon games, haha. It also means ‘bird’ in Japanese, and I guess these entries will help me find my way to freedom.
