Lae'zel is here!

I'm making redesigns for the main bg3 characters - not because I dislike their designs, but because I like putting characters I like in cute clothing inspired by historical fashion.

I don't like when non-human characters look too human, but also when I was trying to change her proportions my brain was screaming at me that proportions are wrong.

That being said I was thinking about taking her hair away but I didn't want to make her too unrecognizable. So I stopped at making her chest smaller. Listen, she is not a mammal, she doesn't need it anyway. I don't know who first came up with this idea, wasn't me, but I love it.

I also wanted to give her more scars but decided not to - she is young, she still has time to gain more lol. Unless you killed her in your game. I'm leaving extra scars for Karlach then.

HER ARMOR. I wanted to make her feel alien to Faerun, but not too much. So:

💚 I made her armor black. I usually try to make only some small elements black and maybe hair. I did gave Shadowheart and Wyll grey armor so I thought that making Lae'zel's armor pure black will give her this odd feeling.

💚 But I did not design her armor after any historical one. To make her feel more alien.

💚 I did keep the red accents just not as gem stones.

💚 Her armor has zigzags as her ears 🤗

💚 With the designs for the rest of the characters I was looking for inspirations mostly from the Wester Europe and mostly from the 14th and 15th century. But for Lae'zel I wanted something different. So I went for this wide pants (In Polish they are called "szarawary" and google is telling me that correct translation is "galligaskins" but that's the first time I see this word lol). Anyway, I decided to give her this wide pants to give her more Eastern European (16th-18th century) vibe. Still historical inspiration - just different this time.

✦ How do I commission you?

You should send an email to nena00comm@gmail.com, with the title "Commission - your @", for better email organization. The email should contain all the references you can send, such as: poses, images of the character, clothes, details you would like to see in the illustration, etc. The commission request should be made only by email. The final file will be sent as a response to the request.

I usually vary a lot in hours and days, so it will depend on the complexity of the commission. On average, simpler and less colored drawings can take between 7~15 days, while more complex ones can take between 15~25 days. Chibis, even colored and rendered, take about 7~10 days, but if it is very detailed there may be a greater variation in days.

I was wondering how achieve such a wonderful textured finish on your pieces? They are wonderful and I love their resemblance to aged photographs and the speckles of colors in the backgrounds. Your art is mesmerizing :)

you can see some of the texture brush sets i use in my #info_asks tag but i have some more (procreate) tips aside from just brushes

also hi i made this whole thing and then stupidly hit ctrl z to erase ONE word and i lost the entire bottom half of the post and all my image descriptions so fuck you tumblr i had to make this twice

to get a faded photo or old digital screen look, consider duplicating the canvas (once all the layers are merged) and using a gaussian blur tool on the new duplicated layer. then set that to low opacity to add a misty sort of look. looks nice in combination with some chromatic abberation and a small bloom effect. then a subtle noise filter on top:

for faded print effects, it's really worthwhile to learn how to use layer masks. you can use a layer mask to non-destructively 'weather' blocks of colour or lineart, without erasing the layer itself. the weathered ink/block print effect here was made using layer masks which means that if i just hide the mask, the lineart becomes solid black again and easy to alter or colour in:

for old paper effects you can just set a paper texture on multiply over the art sure, but you can also combine it with the blur & bloom thing, a really subtle drop shadow and canvas tilt, and highlights to make it look like an aged photograph of a card. this originally had a transparent bg but i'll post it here with a white bg so that the drop shadow is more obvious. the scuffed edges of the card (left) were hand drawn, simple white stucco brush. the bigger patch of scuffed ink (top right) was a texture stamp.

for block print looks you can move the colour layer out of alignment by a few pixels - but only after you're absolutely sure you're done with it, otherwise you'll get something like this -

i forgot to erase out her eye before i moved the red layer so now her eye defeats the 'look' of a misaligned print. the black lineart and red layer were also given the same layer mask treatment as described above to make them look faded or like the ink didn't stick down right to the paper

you can do this with multiple colour layers too. if the colour layers are separated and set to multiply (as in this cmyk example), it'll leave halos and edges around each shape which mimic old comic book print

just to show what you can do WITHOUT any special brushes, here's a piece of one of my mez tarot cards from before i got any extra brushsets at all. for this one, i added a green tint over everything to mimic a sun-bleached or faded print (my actual goal wasn't 'medieval illustration' but actually 'trading card from the 60s that got left on someone's windowsill for decades'). the background texture is the procreate noise brush. the texture under the green lion drawing is the procreate concrete brush (to make it look painted onto a wall). the lettering and lineart is procreate's 6B pencil. but to properly aim for The Look of it being a printed physical object, i also used a perspective blur so that the edges are out of focus, and metallic gold highlights which don't match the lighting of the actual illustration and appear to be catching some other external light. that texture was made from the procreate noise brush

it's pretty simple compared to my later stuff but i still really like the effect

in terms of colours, you need to keep them unified so that they all appear to be acting under the same external light source, like if someone is holding up a torch to a painting then the painting colours will be glazed with firelight even if there's no painted fire. a really easy way to do this is to slap a multiply layer over everything in one shade - grey-yellow for a weathered paper look, or greenish blue for sunbleached photos. this unifies all the colours of the drawing. or you can apply a gradient map at a low opacity so that there's only a subtle change. or just do it by hand - if you want everything to be slightly tinted yellow, just pick the colours you normally would, but move the colour wheel towards yellow to get a yellowfied version of the base colour. easy

it's really important to consider how fading and weathering can affect printed colour. white paper yellows, black fades. you will rarely see pure black or pure white. which means you can use pure black or pure white to add external effects like the white scuff marks on the hierophant card. if the whole drawing is yellowed from age but there's some white somewhere, it's an easy shorthand to show that the scuff mark or whatever was not originally part of the drawing (great way to add some nasty stains lol)

@miaumiaoumao it amazes me how many art styles you can pull off. that's a very rare skill in my experience and you absolutely slay every time. your silly cartoony comics are always a joy to see, and the way you do lineart in the more realistic styles is asolutely wonderful. im staring at the "peer into the darkness" piece (the second one) while im writing this and i cant stop. the way how it's all pencil-y, grainy and textured scratches some deep itch of mine

@fanaroff i love how squishy and soft you draw your characters. your style is so interesting to me, you push the proportions yet it still looks balanced and right. also your characters often feel very grounded in their environment and space, they feel solid. like i know how they would feel if i could touch them yk? i guess that's what i mean as squishy and soft aha

@wild-moss-art Hi there! I'm more than happy to share art philosophy about lineart! You are correct, I am definitely spending less time than usual on my lineart to get these requests done, but I'm still glad with the final results. :3

Here are the three stages that I take to achieve clean and polished lineart.

1) The Rough Sketch is used to figure out what the final product may look like. No fine details yet, only guidelines and basic shapes. I make sure the proportions, alignment, and composition is correct. The completed Rough Sketch gives me a good idea of what the rendered lines may look like, but is a bit too messy to follow. While I do have the option of erasing all of the guidelines and cleaning up the lines, what I usually do is lower the opacity of the rough sketch and start on a new layer.

2) The Under Drawing is done in a non-black color on top of the rough sketch. Here is where I get into finer detail with expression and anatomy. However, because we are following the messy lines of the rough sketch, the Under Drawing will still look a little unpolished. It is still very suitable for coloring if you plan to render all of the details in the painting stage, or if you are going for a more sketchy style.

In order to get sharp, detailed, finely rendered lines however, an additional stage is required.So lets lower the opacity and start a new layer using black ink this time.

3) When Rendering Lines, I carefully follow all of the details provided by the Under Drawing, which shows exactly where each line should be placed. I take my time going over each line, using the zoom tool and rotating the canvas when needed to get the best angle.

Because the final product should have a sharp and clean look, it can be very time consuming and pain staking to go over all the details. That said, I have a few tips that will help this stage go along faster while adding visual appeal to the final product.

Let's use an example. Suppose you place down your lines and end up with something that looks like this.

It's not bad, but it could use a little work. The expression and level of detail that we want isn't there yet, but it's actually a good starting point. If you are new to line art or still practicing, you may wish to aim something like the drawing above so that we can take it a step further using the steps I will demonstrate in the tutorial below.

So how do we make clean lineart into something even greater?

Here is what I mean by line weight. Lines of lower weight are lighter and thinner. Lines of heavier weight are darker and thicker. Then there are modulated lines, which gradually increase or decrease in weight.

In the example drawing, all of the lines are of equal weight. We can make the line art less monotonous by increasing the weight of certain lines. For demonstration purposes, I will only make changes to the right side of the drawing so that you can see the difference.

To start, we will add another line to the upper eyelid and fill in the gap, creating a new, bolder line.

We will also build up the iris, pupil and highlight, adding details as we go. Already, it is looking more expressive.

Lets build up the nose and mouth lines while keeping the ends nice and thin.

Then, we can add weight to the face and ear lines. For the hair outline, we want to make the lines heavier closer to the roots while keeping the ends thin. Hair lines on the inside can be left alone.

Finally, we make the outside line of the character heavier. With these small changes, we have a much more expressive, detailed, and visually appealing product.

Here I've highlighted in red where the lines remained unchanged. You will definitely want to leave some lines alone while building up others. As a rule, outlines should be thicker while the detail lines on the inside should be thinner.

If you increase the weight of all lines with the same amount, it will remain flat.

So, you should aim to have a variety of light lines, heavy lines, and modulated lines. You may wish to use the eraser to lighten up heavy lines or create modulated ones.

If you can do all the steps above, then a lot of detail and expression will be preserved even when the image is shrunk down

The OC I drew the other day was like a breath of fresh air and it was so easy to put in the canvas. The human/elf version of the dca I'm doing it's taking me ages to finish and it's in the same artstyle (with my stress-relief-easy-fast-and-fun-to-use brush aka fine black lineart 1)

So you'll be seeing more of my personal OCs non DCA related for now

It actually makes me a little sad because I have a lot of things I want to draw of Sun, Moon and Eclipse but they aren't coming out as easily

thank you! and hm good question. I think like anything its ultimately just practice but thinking on it there's a few things that helped 4 me that I don't see mentioned a lot:

the single most important thing that made my art improve almost immediately once I realized it is that you can legitimately do fucking whatever. I think a lot of younger artists that look at like social media art tutorials a lot get it in their heads that there's a single perfect "system" that art functions in, like using a particular brush for lineart, a particular color and overlay filter to shade and highlight, a particular way to draw noses or hair or hands and while I think this certainly works for some people and even kinda happens automatically as you get better at art bc you create shortcuts for yourself you shouldn't really try to force it! I think the mark of a good artist is being able to vary these things, sometimes even within the same piece, and this goes doubly for color bc when you know how to use it well it can shift the mood of a painting a lot! Unless you're going for realism you can always say fuck it; red skin, purple shadows, green highlights. Whatever gets across the feeling you're going for y'know!

learning some basic color theory is obviously super important. I'm not gonna break it down here bc there's like hundreds of youtube videos on it but smth I recommend looking into is the distinction between local and non-local color! It'll help you start looking at art with more of an analytical eye so you can figure out what exactly artists you like are doing so you can try to imitate it in your own work. I personally learned a lot of what I know abt color from post-impressionist painters like Les Nabis, Toulouse-Lautrec, etc but you could just as well look at more contemporary art or even other people on social media

smth that helped me a lot is learning how to mix my own paint! I really think you only really need a handful of base colors (red, blue, yellow, green, pink, sienna, black and white) and should mix everything else from there. Those huge gouache or watercolor paint sets look very pretty but ultimately are mostly just a lot more expensive than they need to be, and mixing the paint yourself helps you figure out a lot about what base colors actually make up a certain hue. This knowledge even carries over into digital art bc the color wheel you have in most art programs is based off of traditional paint mixing so by familiarizing yourself with that you're simultaneously getting better at colorpicking! I used to be a digital-only artist and I saw a huge improvement in my digital art once I started working traditionally

I hope these helped somewhat! I should reiterate I'm not really classically trained in art at all and these are just what helped me figure stuff out! I've found a lot of it is just trying at it until you find something that works for you but maybe this'll speed it along :]

This was my old desktop setup btw (since these are photos I took in May 2023 when I first got my hanfu). Thankfully I got a new laptop and a huge monitor to look at (as my main screen). It's SOOO much better than just looking at a tiny laptop screen, I highly recommend it for ergonomics (if people can afford it)

I originally drew Judar wearing hanfu in 2022! Still one of my personal fave doodles ❤️ Judar is my fave (no one is surprised, I have the most obvious predictable tastes in the world LMAO). A meow meow mf perfect for my tastes.

Judar fits perfectly into the highly specific Sen-core niche that my top faves all tend to fall under - Meow meow mf. C*nty sen-core bastard cat who's violent, threatens people, and ok with murder. Bloodthirsty. Monochrome aesthetic colour palette.

Manga Judar has red eyeliner (?) and anime Judar has purple eyeshadow? Both are good, but I like Judar with red eyeliner since black and red are his theme colours! 🖤❤️ I like how the colours pop, the contrast against his design, and how it matches his red eyes.

In my HCs, Judar wears a type of hanfu called 襦裙 (ruqun). 襦 (ru) is the top of a hanfu, and the wrap-around skirt is called 裙 (qun).

I want him to wear black, white, red, gold, hanfu & hanfu earrings, with red eyeliner and black painted nails 🤗

I still need to pick my headcanon hanfu earrings for Judar... I imagine they'd be gold with red accessories.

I just have to refine the eyes, redraw the hair and hanfu, and then start doing the lineart for it! I love the expression tbh

I love how Ohtaka stylizes and draws the shape of Judar's hair and braids. It's so clever how she simplifies the shapes. It just looks so good. It looks galaxy/tornado shaped… I love how the hatched lines above his eyes in Ohtaka's inking represents his eyeliner... ❤️

I just have to redraw the hair and hanfu and then start doing the lineart for it! Love the expression

I miss my sons, I wanna draw my HC designs of JuAli (with Judar wearing hanfu and Alibaba with tanner skin, wearing traditional Arabic clothes), as a fix-it for the obvious colourism & racial stereotyping going on in Magi's designs of SWANA and South Asian inspired charas...

I bought black and red hanfu back in 2023. I based my Judar hanfu doodles on it 🥺❤️ It's in Judar colours. Black red and white 🖤❤️🤍 I'm so HAPPY to get something that reminds me of my fave 🥰🤭❤️✨ I got it from the Hanfu Story~ They have such a large selection of hanfu and they're all so gorgeous~

Basically Judar themed hanfu~ I love traditional clothes, so it's my dream to collect them! Now I can use it as refs to draw him with the poses and lighting I want teehee. Hanfu & huafu look GORGEOUS to me. I also have Vi��t Phục like áo dài and áo tấc~

The colours are amazing!! I love black and red combo 😭💖 It's way too easy to fall into the fashion hole and collecting traditional clothes but I definitely want more in the future!

Art rambles

When I sketch, I draw out the expressions and decide which ones looks best (I either do it once or a few ~ several times) depending on whether I'm satisfied with it. I like the two most recent 2024 versions I showed~ The old one is still nice... But I prefer the recent versions, because I think it shows how my art style and proportions improved.

The sketch is super messy right now so when I get the time I'll refine them more! It's just to make it consistent with my current style. I'm a little insecure about my sketches, so I prefer posting them on priv for mutuals only.

Since I'm not really a fan of the idea of my sketches/WIPs getting posted around when I'm bound to fix/refine/improve on them later when I get the chance to refine them. Though thankfully with my 2022+ lining style, my sketches look more "aesthetically nice" or "post worthy" to me...

My friends told me that I could just post them on main with no tags and a caption like "Please don't reblog!" and people would probably respect that, but ahh I'm still hesitant about my sketches getting reblogged around...

Perhaps in the future... I do genuinely like my art style and I'm very happy with my art improvement, but I want to keep growing as an artist first. I want to reach the point where I manage to become more technically skilled and confident about my works (even my sketches)

This time I attached IRL photos since I thought these pics turned out pretty~ So I'd prefer to keep these on priv just for mutuals.

Re: My thoughts on the issues with the portrayals of certain cultures in Magi

This is how I feel with my faves. Not just my Magi faves, but in general.

I have my HC designs with Xanxus (KHR), Idate (WATGBS AU), Judar (Magi), etc. So many of my faves.

And also cuz I fucking hate his outfit in canon. It's so ugly imo cuz it's a bastardized/racially stereotyped take on what Indian/South Asian clothes look like.

Doing cultural exchanges/wearing other cultures' clothes' is fine, but I think a lot of the racially stereotyped clothing designs is definitely something to criticize.

As someone Viet/SEAsian, I really despise how EA and SEA media, such as animanga + games, often feed into SWANA and South Asian orientalism and racial stereotyping, disrespectful takes, etc. We don't need these ugly ass "dancer-esque" outfits!!!

SWANA and South Asian traditional clothes have such beautiful patterns, and colours... People are really missing out... I wish popular media would depict that instead!!!

These are the sketches of Casa Court and Clementine the Flying Catmite shaped mutualism fungmammal with the gold flower portal she changed into to keep up with Casa Court's lure cord.

I also drew his house body but added the chimney smoke heart and the water drip from his pipe.

I was more comfortable trying to draw the house body mini sketch than the lure body since Casa Court looks like a how to draw manga character in this.

Clementine the Flying Catmite would protect Casa Court from danger like other parasite fungmammals or other dangerous things like fire.

But if it's ice she would take one for the team and sacrifice herself but Casa Court needs to break her to reform her spores back in place.

This will also spread the fungmammals spores to make more of them but needs to stay away from acid if she is frozen which will kill Clementine.

Casa Court is still non infected realtor but uses Clementine be half infected like keeping up with his lure cord for easy travel and making a clone of Casa Court in case he wants to explore to feed his house body.

Zable Fable saves the interview and yawn stretches while Janet clings to Zable's back.

Zable Fable rubs her eyes then opens her monster bag to walk inside in her inner bag realm to brush her teeth and Janet jumps off her back to sit on the guest bed.

Merve Lively looks out the peephole for danger and then walks to the couch near his door to cross his arms to rest to check up on the ghost REALTORs scouts colony.

Merve Lively sleeps then dream talks to the passed on REALTORs and Real Estate Agent/Brokers in the colony to see how everyone is doing.

=I'm back everyone.=

= Hey our leader Merve is back. =

All the ghost beings crowded around Merve Lively to talk to him while the three headed REALTORs looks at something that is not there.

Merve Lively wonders what is wrong and walks up to them.

=What's wrong?=

The three headed REALTORs points in the direction on where Merve's front door to his mobile home house would be then Merve's physical body feels a breeze of air that makes him shiver then wakes up to see his door open with Zable missing with Janet resting on the bed.

"No!?"

Merve's shadow changes into a wobbly shape to represent the ghost scouts.

=Want us to scout for her?=

Merve Lively looks up then nods and 360 spins around the hops in place to release all of them then stops to close his eyes to scan the area with them for both Zable with the dangers.

"Scatter search!"

"Hope she didn't go far."

Fable is now in control of Zable's closed eyed vessel body to sleep walk but Fable can see by sensing the area but is mostly looking out Zable's upside down blue then now orange heart necklace just to explore this new place while Zable get's her rest.

"Zarvara ken tekay? (I wonder what fun I will find today?)"

"Kerkey cevant kon we. (Huh I guess that person is offering something and I might as well check it out.)"

Fable walks Zable's closed eyed vessel body to sleep walk but while the triangle glasses makes Zable look awake.

Fable in Zable's closed eyed vessel body watches a REALTORs try to lure a buyer that they get pretty close to the house but the buyer changes their mind then sees the house give up to walk back but they see Zable's vessel body checking out the house by touching it.

"Zee ki bure v ty owner? (Such a pretty build and I wonder who the owner is?)"

"Kee kee see ans. (Guess I got my answer.)"

Fable in Zable's closed eyed vessel body senses that the house creature is looking at them then waits for the REALTORs to do their speech then sees them offer their business card for Fable to take it normal like to look up at the house creatures eyes to see the many windows.

Fable makes Zable's body lost in thought while speaking in Ancient Shiften which sounds like gibberish to others and can kind of understand this new creature.

"Yuve ko I we v ty treat? (I wonder how long has this creature tried this speech and is this person a threat?)"

Fable makes Zable's body walks away from the danger but walks backwards up to the house door to stare at it while eating the business card then looks back at the lure body then tries to open the door but can't.

"Wuder Iw zepre Inzide? (I wonder what surprises are inside?)"

This Infected REALTORs thinks this is a easy buyer to pull in but the weasel fungmammal warns them that this buyer seems off like it's too easy.

"You know what I think you should not check out my house."

Fable makes Zable's body knock on the door curiously. "Yht! (Why not!)"

The Infected REALTORs sighs as the weasel fungmammal in their brain telepathy tells the house creature to ask the person to leave then the lure body gesture waves this person off.

"Hey no yelling and now shoo!"

Fable makes Zable's body sighs and walks away then gets snatched by a REALTORs.

"Aew mun! (Aww man!)"

"YEE! (AHH!)"

The very hungry drooling muscular female looking REALTORs picks up Zable's body easily and opens the door to a weird looking house that is sideways then tosses Zable's body in then pushes lure body down on the floor with the enzymes activated.

The snatcher REALTORs closes the door with the house's meltedness tendrils.

"Some people look down on us snatcher types but I pity the hungry ones that restrict themselves for some sort of honor system thing."

"I maybe house poor when it comes to buyer hunting so I snatch them up at night when they distracted and by themselves it's much easier to catch than luring the old school say with a silly speech."

"What is that smell and this strange song?" "AH!"

"D-dream move 555 Boy Crazy Boy Band. Eh."

Fable heavy breathes in the enzymes to get knocked out to quickly wake up Zable then uses Janet's translate to say that then makes her sleep to make Zable's body limp to "die" and slowly sinks in the floor but pushes the body back up to have a discontinued all different flavored 90's fruit flavored soda scented shifter mist song protrude out Zable's body and this plays https://youtube.com/watch?v=yZ68cMjkX_c .

The ground rumbles that the whole house feels it and a you start to hear the same song muffled then slowly get louder that a boy band tour bus rams into the side ways house hitting the lure body making the lure cord stretch like a rubber band then fling back to the brain killing it but the tour bus fades when it hits Zable's vessel body while the stan fans rush to the tour bus to sing the song with the band members for the fans to destroy the rest of the house.

Once the dream move ends with the enemy gone then Fable in Zable's vessel body would get up and looks around to see the monster house gone with debris everywhere with the fleshy pieces everywhere but sees the REALTORs business card then eats it.

"Cvee hove gu? (Where did the home go?)"

Fable in Zable's vessel body shrugs and dusts themself off.

Walks past some other snatcher type REALTORs that get scared then hides away from this mystery person and feels a familiar recent ghost presence pick up Zable's vessel body to bring them back to Merve's mobile home house.

"Fuy brung mye heur? (Why bring me back here?)"

Fable faint falls but Merve Lively carries Zable's body and hears Zable sleep for reals with some snoring.

"This is a strange individual but at least you are safe."

"House Call!"

As Merve Lively walks inside of his house with the light on then you see the shadows fuse within his shadow to save them with a light gray one being the new one.

=That character is scary and I agree with three heads over there.=

Merve Lively closes the door then sets Zable in her bed and noticed the upside down blue heart necklace is glowing.

Merve Lively watches over Zable just in case something weird happens.

Was just supposed to be art style experimentation but I had too much fun and ended up making my first Meet the Artist

art style. the first rule of art style is HAVE FUN. If you have an element you reeeally want to add to your art style but you're like "but my art style doesn't look like that :(" just. add it. Art style is not a law and is ever-changing and art is about having FUN and making COOL-ASS ART

second rule of art style: "art style" just refers to the usual way to employ colours, lineart, form, mood, shape, subject, etc etc etc in your art. All together, it makes up a unique way of drawing that you have.

take LavenderTowne. (I'm not going to post any of her art here bc reposting without permission (even with credit) is shitty, but that's a link to her youtube where you can see what I'm talking about.) Her art is full of pastel colours, round lines/soft edges, large eyes, small noses, feminine-presenting characters, visible and defined lineart, people/humanoids, and a "cute" aesthetic. She goes for a more cartoony effect with largely exaggerated proportions; she's closer to steven universe than she-ra, yk? Additionally, she uses more cel shading than photorealistic rendering.

All those together make up her art style. And not every single one of her drawings has all those elements, but most of them have many.

Meanwhile, Sam Does Arts--despite also drawing non-realistic feminine people in digital art--has a much, much different art style. He has less defined lines, more realistic proportions, softer shading, soft lighting, and a general peaceful, calm, realistic-but-to-the-left vibe.

Art style is just about what choices you make with how you draw. Do you use bright colours or pastel ones? Do you draw in black-and-white? Do you have a lot of thick, defined lines or thinner, vaguer ones? Do you draw X facial feature big or small? Do you go for realism or complete cartoon or somewhere in between? Do you draw people, animals, landscapes, whole scenes, etc? What mood do your pieces tend to have? Do you do round lines or sharp ones? What perspective do you tend to draw from? Do you want your art to look 3-d or 2-d?

It's important to note that you don't need an answer for all of those, and that they're all "usually". You don't have to always use bright, saturated colours just because they're usually present in your art style. You don't always have to avoid drawing feminine people just because you usually draw masculine ones. And you can have more than one art style! My "elaborate detailed painting" style and my usual style are very different, and that's ok.

Finding your art style is literally just going "ok, do I want to do/like to do this or this or this more often?" and then doing it. You can yoink elements from other artists, too; if you like how artist ABC draws eyes, draw eyes like them. If you like how artist XYZ does their shading, shade like them. Just don't take a bunch of elements from one artist's style, because that's then copying them.

Also: you already have an art style. You already have a way you naturally do your art. "Finding your art style" is really about editing your current art style into something you like better, via practice and actually asking yourself "why does my art look like this? what do I want to change about my style?" and then you change it accordingly.

I want to draw more poses and start shifting my style away from "person from the shoulders up with no background", so... I'm doing that. I don't like the way I used to draw eyes, so I changed it. It's a lot easier than it feels at first, and you really just need to spend some time practicing the way you'd rather draw.

I'd like to emphasize that art style is about how you like to draw. It's not about what's popular, or copying cool tv show 273, or what you feel like real artists should be doing. Your art style is one hundred percent about what YOU want to do and what YOU find fun to draw.

That can be what's popular, btw. It can be similar to the cool tv show you like. But don't do something just because you feel like you have to. Do you want to draw nothing but photorealistic cacti? DO IT. Art is for you.

anyway!! i hope that is a tad bit helpful!! feel free to ask more if you have more questions, I had a Lot more thoughts about this than i'd thought it did :D

Hey! I'm the one who asked the poorly worded art process question. I'm here to give it another try by being more specific. The problem is . . . that's hard. Because that was about a specific as I can get, since I kind of want to know everything about how your art works.

Big things, like how you come up with ideas, or how you design characters. But small things, too, like what tools you use for drawing, how you balance between traditional and digital art, and how you decide what color to use for your unique and beautiful line art.

I want to be more specific so you can answer, but the question in my head is too vague and broad for me to be specific about it. So . . . here are some subquestions of my question, I guess! Maybe that helps?

and yes, this is far more answerable! i hope i can satiate some of your hunger for insight without writing a whole book.

HOW DO I COME UP WITH IDEAS?

this is obviously going to be very different for everyone. i very rarely have to dig for ideas or sit down and brainstorm, unless of course i am trying to achieve something very specific, like fulfill art contest criteria or working on a commission. my brain is very visually wired, so a lot of my ideas literally just pop up in my head (i know of several artists with aphantasia - some people don't have any visuals in their head at all and I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THAT'S LIKE AND I AM IN AWE OF THESE ARTISTS), sometimes i see a character or character design and im like HNNNG i need to draw them, or i just... have a concept i really want to Exist and i'm going to figure out how.

my biggest problem is that often, when i get an idea i want to DRAW IT, NOW NOW NOWNOWNOW, and that's just Not Feasible. sometimes because i'm Literally In Bed, sometimes because i have too many things i need to do or draw first... but i need to clear up space in my head, because my Urge To Draw will be like, beeping and whirring until i satisfy it... so i write it down on my TO DRAW-list! it's a real list that exists on my phone and i have to use it frequently. if i keep scrolling down i start finding weird notes that i have NO idea are supposed to mean anymore, but that's fine. i can't satisfy every Art Urge. sometimes i need to let them pass.

HOW DO I DESIGN CHARACTERS?

this one might vary a bit, but it can often be boiled down to "i sketch around until i figure something that Works." many of my characters, especially my older characters, became characters by accident when i kept drawing them over and over and i was like Ah I Like Drawing You... You Exist Now. that's how sparrow spellcaster happened, at the very least. this could happen because i had school and i would focus in school by doodling/sketching while listening to class. since i no longer go to school, pretty much all of my new characters are far more intentional. Timian and Vinta specifically exist as a result of a "favourite character fusion" challenge, and a lot of iphimery characters started with a Purpose rather than just harnessing the vibe of something i drew multiple times without thinking.

it helps to write down elements or tropes i want to include, like "sturdy-looking" or "VILLAIN OF EVIL SCARY MAGICS but it's a little girl and the dark magic is bright lightning and not shadows" or something. it can vary from a tiny visual detail to their role in the story. whatever i want to Achieve. my Intent. because my brain works so visually, i just really need to sketch somethign repeatedly until i nail it and can be like Yes That's It.

sketchbooks look a little messy but that’s what they’re for.

WHAT TOOLS DO I USE

for digital art, i’m currently using an ipad pro and procreate. i use a lot of the brushes that came installed, like Mercury is my primary lineart brush, and Moorilla is my primary sketching brush, but i also buy a lot of custom brushes on the hunt for More Delicious Textures (DAUB has a lot of good ones, especially if you want some that imitate traditional art). i have also used Huion and XP-pen tablets and generally recommend them, as well as clip studio paint as an art program (i love it very much and if it wasn’t subscription-based on ipad i would still be using it).

for traditional art, mostly just whatever sketchbook i have + my trusty mechanical pencil. i mean i have two: one with softer lead (it comes out darker) and 0,7 mm thickness, and one that’s 0,5 and harder lead for more light sketching, or if i’m going to line it with ink.

i also have a trusty pentel brush pen that i love DEARLY and feel bad for not having used in a while for reasons i will get to.

when i work on calendar pieces traditionally, i like to draw lines with ink - i use a dip pen with exchangeable nibs - and then color with watercolors. i have several sets because they’re all slightly different and i want the Range.

i sometimes travel with a little sketchbook in my bag and an assortment of pens, so that i can sketch Anytime, Anywhere. i think doodling with a pen can be very useful because you gotta become comfortable with the mistakes and imperfections and keep going anyway. if i doodle at work that’s the tools i have -  regular ball pens and a bunch of paper lying around.

HOW DO I BALANCE BETWEEN DIGITAL AND TRADITIONAL ART?

currently, i... don’t, really. it was easier when i had school, and i would just doodle freely and then maybe use some of my sketches as thumbnails or concept ideas. it’s harder now that i need to intentionally sit down with my sketchbook, and tbh... the ipad works very well for sketching. it’s so CONVENIENT and i have WORK all the time and my time to create art has become much more limited than it was. i miss going to my weirdo art high school where we would try out a whole bunch of different tools and methods. sure, yes, i had to paint with Acrylics My Beloathed, but getting to play around in different mediums is VERY valuable.

i genuinely want to be able to make more time and space for non-digital art again, but i just don’t have the ability to right now. it’s also different now that i’ve moved away from my parent’s place - i used to have an enormous desk and my mother has a large collection of art tools and there was a lot more storage space for whatever i created. digital art is very convenient and very accessible. ah well!

HOW DO I DECIDE ON THE COLOR FOR MY LINEART?

i usually line in black or a very dark color, and when i’m done coloring + shading i might play around with the colors and see what works. if you lock the layer you can just throw all the spaghetti at the wall you want. i decide on whatever fits the piece. i tend to be pretty fast and loose about it too, sometimes you can probably spot parts of my lineart that have slightly mismatchy color, but it’s like... done is better than perfect! i don’t have the energy to overlook every single pixel of my piece or else i would drive myself utterly mad.

-PRICE: the price is calculated on the hours of work I put on it. It is based on the amount of characters, details and background you ask for. The more complicated it is, the more time it takes, the more it costs. Please explain in your email what you would like and your budget and we will come up with a suitable price for both of us!

-WHAT I NEED: photo references and information on what you want, the more the better. They don’t have to be super accurate! You can send ten photos and say: “I want this dress with this character with this other background etc.”

-WHAT I WILL DRAW: I am comfortable drawing nsfw, most kinks, and animals of all kind, real and fantasy alike. I also draw every ship, so don’t be shy in asking! I won’t draw underage nsfw, non-con or dub-con, domestic violence etc. If you’re not sure, ask!

-WHAT FANDOMS? All of them. Just provide references and I’m good. Also, I’m a huge nerd, so there’s a 90% chance that I already know what you’re talking about. I draw OCs too!

-HOW TO PAY: Paypal only. After we agree on a price I will draw the sketch, and after the you have approved of the sketch I will send the invoice that you will need to pay. The invoice will be in euros, but paypal converts that automatically so you don´t have to worry, and it will obviously be the amount we agreed on. I will then proceed with the rest of the drawing once I receive the payment.

-HOW IT WILL WORK: I’ll send you the progress AT LEAST three times: the sketch, the lineart, and the base colors, so you can see them and ask me to change what you don’t like. Do not worry about offending me! The key to a good commission is communication! Also, I won’t be able to change stuff if you don’t tell me in time, so there’s that too ;)

-CAN I SHOW THE DRAWING TO THAT ACTOR? Sure, as long as it’s not nsfw! Please let me know if you do, I’m super curious to know what they said ;)

-DEADLINES: Please let me know if you have any deadlines you want respected. If you want it ready in less than 10 days there’s an extra 10$ fee. If you want it ready in less than 7 days there’s an extra 20$ fee. I’m usually pretty fast with commissions but still, you buy time and you ask for it to be done before other people. Also, if you ask for a deadline please try to reply to emails as promptly as you can manage.

-LIVESTREAMING: I might livestream the last phase of your commission (the coloring) on my Picarto.tv account, if the inspiration strikes and time is there. If you don´t want me to, please say so in advance, even tho I usually ask for permission before I do it.
