A new local discovery. Cefn Park MX Track, which just happens to be 15-20 minutes up the road from us.  Having moved to the area at the end of last year, our new local surroundings still produce some great finds.  I had a fun couple of hours at the weekend watching and photographing the action on the track.  It did make me smile to see how riders improved and upped their game when they saw a photographer track side, but of course, it gave me some great images too.  I will be heading back there sometime...

¿Qué le ha dado México a la Copa Libertadores?

'Bofo' y las Chivas regalaron una de las imágenes icónicas para el futbol mexicano 

En los últimos días se mencionó la posibilidad del regreso a la Libertadores y aquí recordamos los mejores momentos

La Copa Libertadores es el torneo más prestigioso de América y los clubes mexicanos formaron parte de la competencia por muchos años pero en 2016 se decidió poner fin a la participación de equipos de la Liga MX.

En declaraciones a RG La Deportiva, Mikel Arriola, presidente de la Liga MX, señaló que este año será clave para definir el posible regreso del balompié azteca a las competencias de la Conmebol tanto a nivel de clubes como selección, sin embargo, parece que aún falta mucho camino por recorrer para que México regrese a la Libertadores.

A la espera que de que los equipos aztecas firmen su regreso al principal torneo de Sudamérica, ESPN Digital recuerda lo que ha dado México a la Copa Libertadores.

Actuaciones históricas

Los clubes mexicanos destacaron en la competencia sudamericana por ser protagonistas e incluso pelear en varias ocasiones por el prestigioso título. A continuación recordamos los equipos de la Liga MX que llegaron a la Gran Final así como otras plantillas que tuvieron participaciones sobresalientes.

Cruz Azul

En el 2001, La Máquina se convirtió en el primer equipo en llegar a la Final de la Copa Libertadores y estuvo muy cerca de coronarse. El conjunto cementero se enfrentó a Boca Juniors y perdió la ida en el Estadio Azteca, pero igualó el marcador global en La Bombonera provocando que el título se definiera desde los 11 pasos, instancia en la cual el plantel mexicano no estuvo a la altura y el conjunto xeneize se llevó el trofeo.

Chivas

El Rebaño Sagrado fue el segundo club de la Liga MX en disputar el título de la principal competencia de Conmebol en 2010. En su camino a la final, Chivas superó a Vélez Sarsfield, Libertad y Universidad de Chile y disputó el título ante el Internacional de Brasil. El conjunto carioca se proclamó campeón al ganar por marcador global de 5-3.

Cinco años antes, los tapatíos realizaron una histórica serie contra Boca Juniors en 2005. En Cuartos de Final, el Rebaño Sagrado brindó una de las mayores satisfacciones a su afición al vencer por 4-0 en la ida al conjunto argentino. En la vuelta, disputada en La Bombonera, los ánimos se calentaron entre los jugadores provocando una histórica bronca, en la cual Adolfo Bautista fue el principal protagonista al ser víctima de un escupitajo de Jorge Benítez.

Tigres

En 2015, Tigres se convirtió en el último equipo mexicano en llegar a la Final de la Libertadores. Los aficionados mexicanos creían que los felinos tenían posibilidades reales de convertirse en campeón al contar con una poderosa plantilla y el fichaje estrella de André-Pierre Gignac. Sin embargo, River Plate, rival de Tigres en la Final, fue mejor y en el Monumental se llevó el trofeo con un contundente 3-0.

América

Una de las actuaciones más recordadas de un equipo mexicano en la Libertadores fue la que protagonizó América en la edición 2000. En una semifinal memorable ante Boca Juniors, las Águilas perdieron la ida por 4-1 y en la vuelta se quedaron muy cerca de conseguir una remontada histórica pero Walter Samuel frustró el sueño azulcrema de disputar la gran final.

Tijuana

En la edición 2013, Xolos estuvo muy cerca de hacer historia. El conjunto fronterizo, que en cuartos de final se enfrentó al Atlético Mineiro, tuvo en sus manos la oportunidad de clasificar a las semifinales pero un penal fallado por Duvier Riascos impidió que Tijuana avanzara a la siguiente ronda.

Impacto comercial y televisivo

En datos publicados en 2015 por la consultora deportiva Mxsports, un año antes de que la Federación Mexicana de Futbol anunciara que los clubes aztecas abandonarían el torneo sudamericano, se informó sobre el importante impacto económico de los equipos de la Liga MX en la Libertadores.

Al contar con la presencia de representantes del balompié mexicano, la Conmebol incrementaba sus ganancias entre un 20% y 30%. La inclusión de clubes aztecas estaba acompañada de patrocinadores importantes.

Por otro lado, México era junto a Brasil los países que mayor audiencia televisa registraban en los partidos de Copa Libertadores, según señaló la consultora.

Polémicas

Los clubes mexicanos no estuvieron libres de polémica en la competencia de la Conmebol al protagonizar varias trifulcas que siguen presentes en la memoria de los hinchas.

Una de las más recordadas fue la bronca entre jugadores de América y Sao Caetano en 2004. Los ánimos se calentaron de tal manera que algunos aficionados del cuadro de Coapa incluso lograron ingresar a la cancha e intercambiaron golpes con futbolistas del cuadro brasileño.

De manera similar, en la final de 2010 entre Internacional y Chivas, los rojiblancos perdieron el título y al final del partido intercambiaron palabras poco amistosas con los elementos del club brasileño provocando una enorme bronca mientras había personas en el campo preparando el escenario para la ceremonia del campeón. La trifulca duró varios minutos pero al final se pudo llevar a cabo la coronación del campeón.

Figuras

Cuauhtémoc Blanco

Uno de los ídolos más importantes en la historia del América presume de ser uno de los máximos goleadores aztecas en la Copa Libertadores con 15 dianas. Blanco nunca disputó la final de la competencia pero fue uno de los mejores representantes del campeonato azteca.

Francisco Palencia

Fue pieza clave para que La Máquina disputara la Final ante Boca Juniors. El 'Gatillero', quien presume de 17 dianas en la justa sudamericana, marcó en el partido de vuelta ante los Xeneizes en La Bombonera y sus actuaciones en esa campaña de la Libertadores sigue en el corazón de los aficionados celestes.

Adolfo Bautista

El exjugador de las Chivas es uno de los mexicanos más sobresalientes en la historia de la Libertadores. 'Bofo' será recordado por su papel en la goleada histórica ante Boca Juniors y por ser el líder que guió a las Chivas a la final en 2010. El azteca no estuvo libre de polémica y su bronca en La Bombonera siempre será recordada.

Salvador Cabañas

El exfutbolista paraguayo fue protagonista de una de las mayores hazañas de un club mexicano en la Libertadores. En 2008, América consiguió la remontada ante el Flamengo con dos goles de Cabañas. Esa hazaña fue denominada como el "maracanazo azulcrema” y Salvador registró 18 goles en el torneo de la Conmebol.

2018 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations Kicks Off at RedBud

The World’s largest motocross event has kicked off at the famous RedBud circuit in the hills of Michigan! The Monster Energy Motocross of Nations is the most unique event of the season and today hosted an already massive crowd.

The rowdy American fans were joined by the always passionate athletes from around the world today. With countless events throughout the weekend RedBud hosted the first two this afternoon with the Official Opening Press conference and the Teams Presentation to the crowd.

The Opening press conference was the first of the two which started with Youthstream Vice President David Luongo, FIM/CMS Director Tony Skillington, and the 2018 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations Organizer’s Amy & Tim Ritchie sharing some words about this weekend’s event.

Youthstream Vice President Mr. David Luongo: “It is a great honor to be back in the USA with the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, we have not been here in many years and the fans have high expectations, the American fans are amazing! We are sure it will be a fantastic weekend and on the sporting side it will be one of the most exciting Motocross of Nations in years. We really have the best riders in the world with many top riders in all the classes so it is very exciting and we hope to have good racing. We just cannot wait for tomorrow morning with the engines start!”

FIM/CMS Director Tony Skillington: “I would like to thank all of those who made this event possible especially Youthstream for the foresight to return to the USA again and also to find the great partnership with the Amy and Tim Ritchie, MXSports, and the AMA. The Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations is a very unique event, year after year it creates the best atmosphere that our sport can provide. We have the very best of the best here and like the fans we look forward to a great racing weekend.”

2018 Monster Energy Motocross of Nations Organizer Amy Ritchie: “Our dad went to this race 40 years ago in Germany and this was his dream, to host the Motocross of Nations.” Then Tim Ritchie continued: “We are very excited to host this event, we have been working on it for a very long time. We have had a very good time working with the Youthstream crew and they have been good to work with, other than that I just want to say welcome everyone.”

Following the words from the officials the teams of the USA, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Belgium, Switzerland, Australia, and Italy shared their expectations in front of national and international media before concluding with the popular team Puerto Rico!

With the conclusion of the opening press conference the teams and media took a small break before heading to the starting area where thousands of fans lined the fences as the teams of 30 nations were presented to the crowd one by one. Each team hopped in the back of a Dodge Ram truck starting with the 30th team on the entry list, Guatemala, and working up the list to defending champions France before ending with a bang as the home team USA of both present and past editions brought the crowd to a massive roar.

The amazing Friday moments only further raised the level of an enthusiasm for both the fans and competitors. While celebrations at the track continue the riders and teams have set their focus to tomorrow’s Qualifying day.

Both the events today were live streamed as will tomorrow’s LIVE Studio Show hosted by Paul Malin and Jeff Emig while the today’s teams presentation, tomorrow’s Studio Show, and all of the weekend’s racing is being streamed live on MXGP-TV.com.
