Regulus had learned to not ask questions.

Dating James Potter had its....unique qualities, and looking the other way when he and his friends were wreaking havoc was one of them. Remus had advised him long ago to just ignore it, as that gave him plausible deniability.

But this time, he just...couldn't. He couldn't leave well enough alone. He had to ask.

"James...James...Potter!" He yelled at a frantic-looking James, who was currently running across the grounds, arms full and head swiveling.

"Don't ask..." Dorcas muttered next to him, not even looking up from her book.

But he couldn't not ask. He left the spot where the rest of his friends were studying and ran up to James, who was now walking slowly around by the edge of the lake, muttering 'Pads? Where are you?' clearly looking for something.

"James!" he said again, this time finally gaining the older boy's attention.

"Erm...yes, Reg?" James responded, obviously trying to look innocent but failing miserably.

Regulus sighed. "Why are you holding a duck, James."

James shifted from foot to foot, the struggling animal still flapping a bit in his arms. "Erm...what if I said this hasn't always been a duck? And...this isn't the only not-duck currently wandering the grounds?"

Regulus stared, taking in James's words, before exhaling sharply. "Never mind. I don't want to know."

And he returned to his spot with Dorcas.

"Would you really throw away? Your life? Your potential? Your future? Would you throw it away for a war you don't even have to be a part of?" Lily demanded. James looked at her with a look that made her think that, yes he would. He would throw it all away, and he even looked a little offended that she was asking. So Lily threw in a new question, one that would trip him up.  "Would you die for this?"

But of course, the question did not trip him up, in fact, he didn't even hesitate before answering.

"I would die for you." James had the same burning look in his eyes that he had had the first night she'd kissed him. 

"Why?" Lily asked her voice barely above a whisper. 

James studied her face with a look of longing that she hadn't seen before. Or maybe just one she hadn't registered. He looked as if he was trying to see exactly what he could say without scaring her off. He just sighed in response. Lily didn't know what he had seen, but apparently it wasn't enough. She never was, she thought bitterly and turned away. 

"Don't ask questions you already know the answer to," James whispered, so quietly that she almost hadn't heard him. But she had, and Lily froze.

Based off an anonymous request that started this microfic and now it has taken on its own life because people keep requesting more....

"Evans!" James called, running up to the redhead in question, sweating slightly.

She turned, looking at him appraisingly. "Potter. Why do you have a duck in your hands?"

She didn't even look surprised, was the thing. Internally, James wondered if they'd taken that ability from her long ago. "Erm...you had plans with Remus, right?"

"Yes..." Lily agreed, looking suspicious. "But he's late."

"So he never made it to you?" James confirmed with a nod, already turning to run in the other direction.

Lily, however, seemed to need more information. "Potter!"

James turned back around, skidding to a halt. "Yes?" he asked, trying to arrange his features in an innocent expression.

"Tell me that duck isn't Remus," Lily almost begged, looking slightly terrified.

Instantly, James relaxed. Because he didn't have to lie. "Oh! It's not!" he assured her before running off.

As he ran, however, the duck in his arms honked angrily.

"Shut it, Pete, there's no way I'm asking her for help!" James argued with the indignant duck, clutching it firmly.

Another honk made him snort in return.

"Fine! Fine, I'll ask someone. But...not yet. Give me some time!"

The duck did not look pleased.
