Hijabi MC Shenanigans+Headcanons in Saligia
Guy
Guy: *tries to kiss MC in the beginning*
MC, punching him: NO KISSING
Toa
Toa: This has absolutely no alcohol content. Have you ever HAD wine before?
MC: No, nor do I ever plan to because my religion STRICTLY FORBIDS EVEN GOING NEAR THE STUFF
Toa:
Fenn
MC be dodging his advances like a Bollywood action movie protagonist
Roy
MC: At least I can have some semblance of normalcy
Lynt
Lynt tryna use her as a pillow, but she politely declines, since her religion forbids her from coming into contact with men
Other Things That May or May Not Have Happened
MC draping her duvet over her head as a makeshift hijab when unexpected visitors come
MC gets caught washing her feet in the sink for wudhu
MC feeling incredibly disoriented bc she has no idea which way the Qiblah (the direction of the Kabah in Mecca) is, so offering prayer is a nightmare and a half
MC lowkey upset bc the Quran does not exist in Saligia (iirc). And Lou wishes he could help
Rio and Thoma getting worried about MC during Ramadhan (whenever that is. It's super stressful not knowing when the Islamic calendar lines up with the calendar here) bc she's going from dawn till dusk without food or drink for a month
MC happily answering her friends' questions about her religion (they are genuinely curious)
MC's S-Rank friends apologizing for what they did in the first few chapters (I cannot be certain if they fully understand the true ramifications of what they've done, but they feel bad regardless, since they don't like to see MC upset)
Lance would be genuinely curious about her religion also and try to make a safe space for her (Lance doesn't discriminate, a person in need of a safe space is a person in need of a safe space)
Sherry and Violet go shopping with MC often and they often find some really cute and modest clothes for her
J*sper is normal in this AU, so he actually respects her religion
Tino freaks out and profusely apologizes whenever he accidentally makes something haram to eat for her. Knight would also do the same
Grayson wondering why she only eats fruits and vegetables here, and she tell him that she is not sure if the meats are halal, and she does not want to take any chances and accidentally eat something haram
to all the hijabi CoD players, I write this for you

I'm glad the show retconned Chidi as actually being Nigerian and just raised in Senegal (presumably in Dakar?) because that is literally the only thing that makes sense.
#the good place#chidi anagonye#they picked senegal at random by pointing at a map and calling it a day i just know it#probably bc they realized every single mc spoke english as first language#sorry but if he was senegalese first of all his name would be babacar or moussa or abdoul not 'chidi'#he would also be muslim and therefore not be drinking wine#i found this shit SO distracting in the first season lol#he'd say something like 'france enslaved my country for 300 years'#and i'd just be like 'well france did a lot of shit but also you're clearly from nigeria so no they didn't'

So you want to write about horses.
Specifically, you want to write about horses in your medieval-inspired fantasy novel, rpg, or daydream fantasy. Knights in shinning armor on noble steeds, damsels in distress(or not!) on fine prancing mount, or an evil sorcerer cackling on a fierce charger above your poor tandem MCs.
Whatever it is you're imagining, a medieval horse appears. But you know nothing about horses. I can help.
(If you would like to begin with my first basic Basics post, start here)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/31abbb9ab643c649ddf1ba7f469953b2/94092aa183bc00c3-83/s540x810/482a72d2ea8d970e8eb8ce25ddbd25fdf842965f.jpg)
^ When thinking knight, you're probably imagining a horse like this.
Preface: When talking about fiction, there is always a question of historical accuracy. That is wholly up to you. But you will at least, after reading this, know more of the historical fact involving horses, and certainly know about some of the more commonly-complained about fallacies involving horses in media.
Now, the above still is from the film Ladyhawke (1985), which is often credited for popularizing the Friesian breed in the United States. I can almost guarantee you have see a Friesian in a film or on TV. The recent series Shadow and Bone had a central character ride a Friesian in one episode. They epitomize the romantic nobility and grace of knights. Except they don't.
The horse you see above came into existence in 1879, primarily as a harness and agricultural use horse. Horses known as Friesian horses have existed since the 11th century, but those horses were completely different from the breed created in the 19th century. The modern Friesian is a trotting breed, made to pull carriages and look beautiful doing it. They have a long back, short neck, and due to inbreeding, a host of nasty genetic problems including dwarfism, aortic rupture, hydrocephalus, and megaesophagus.
However, breeds that trace ancestry back to beyond the middle ages do exist, and they have been breed to look much the same for generations. Introducing:
The Barb/Berber Horse
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/aeb6a44c9e474042c17a2cf5848ceadb/94092aa183bc00c3-68/s540x810/bf036c205ac6f63fff3a37ee70d2f92934ef3345.webp)
^Kinda just looks like A Horse™
The Barb comes from North Africa, and was spread into Europe through the Muslim conquest of Spain, where the breed mixed with the native Andalusian breed to create the Spanish Jennet, which is possibly the most widely successful horse breed in all of history. The Jennet is currently extinct*, but due to its durability, it was the horse used by the Spanish AND the British to invade the Americas, and descendants of the Jennet survive in local breeds from Argentina to Canada.
*a revitalization breed does exist of the same name
The Andalusian/Lusitano/Pure Raza Espanol
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/7873266dec879a4ee6ae0bfb08abf636/94092aa183bc00c3-ca/s540x810/609384b6de43908479b2208efcc45d6e407248c7.jpg)
^The true Fabio of horses, known for thick flowing locks and sweet dispositions
Possibly the horse that most strongly resembles the ancient knighly horse, this noble creature used to be the preferred horse of film, before the Friesian rise in popularity. Horses of Spanish bloodlines are Andalusian, horses of Portuguese bloodlines are Lusitano, but the characteristics of both breeds are nearly identical. They are also known for a fancy 'high stepping' movement, in which they raise their knees higher than other breeds naturally.
The Arabian
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b8c455f88bf3c0717c4d07df0cc7a7e3/94092aa183bc00c3-ce/s540x810/03067a89b338fca517d180febc959daccac492f7.jpg)
^Note the narrow, 'dished' face and raised tail, breed characteristics
The ancient horse of the desert, made famous through books such as The Black Stallion, King of the Wind, and films such as Hildago. These horses are known for their stamina and intelligence, and were traditionally used as war horses by the desert tribes of the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabian has descendants in almost all modern breeds, as it is used to add strength and stamina to the original stock, despite being a relatively small horse. During the Napoleonic wars, this horse became the prized war horse of Europe as well, with Napoleon himself preferring to ride Arabians into battle.
The Mongolian Horse
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1e85f05840f04fc3cf005ed01bcbcd15/94092aa183bc00c3-9f/s540x810/5338978094ecd8c1e0ce40f306477cc8c00d06f8.jpg)
^Thick head, thick body, this horse is made to survive winter on the steppes
Introduced to Europe from the Hunnic invasions that ended the rule of Rome, the Mongolian horse is made to survive, thrive, and run in harsh cold weather. This horse allowed Ghengis Khan and his soldiers to conqure one of the largest empires to ever exist, from Korea to Poland. This compact horse would have mixed with the native stock of Russian, Eastern European, and Germanic tribes to help create the ancient northern horses, resulting in a thicker breed of horse in the north, and a lighter breed of horse in the south of Europe. Modern-day pony breeds such as the Exmoor, Fjord, Icelandic, and other have been found to have genetic ties to the Mongolian horse.
These horses do not exactly look like the modern image of knights on massive horses, but it is useful to remember that 1. people back then were a lot smaller and 2. horses back then were a lot smaller. Of course, there were hundreds of other local breeds during the middle ages, but many have been modernized and become today's sport, work, or pleasure horses.
During the middle ages, horses were not actually defined by breed. They were defined by the work the horse was suited and trained to preform. There were five main types of medieval horses.
The Destrier
Also called The Great Horse for its size, strength, and price, this horse was the renown mount of knights and kings in battle. These horses were highly trained for battle, and could be taught to do such things as striking out at soldiers in front, kicking at soldiers from the back, and even leaping all four feet in the air to protect it's rider. They would wear the most armor, and these horses would likely be closest in appearance to the modern Andalusian.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ede496ddbaaf0d859e8b40236dbd26fa/94092aa183bc00c3-00/s400x600/226a63da15e22c79f13321d0c3aabb0322a8eab4.jpg)
^Ornate heavy armor on a model horse. This armor was made for a horse not much more than 15hh, what today would be a small horse.
The Courser/The Charger
A lighter horse than the destrier, the courser is also a warhorse, highly trained and well-bred, but a little less expensive. A knight might not be able to afford a destrier, especially as a minor knight, but every knight should have a courser. The Spanish Jennet is the epitome of the medieval courser, and in fact was the horse used by Richard II. According to Shakespeare, the horse's name was White Surrey, although other sources claim the horse was Roan Barbary, and was a Barb or Berber horse*.
*Bought from Spain and likely a cross of Spanish and African blood, so a Jennet. But Jennet was also a classification of a horse type in those days, so, sources are muddled.
The Rouncey
The 'average' horse of the time, this horse was used mainly for riding, but could sometimes be ridden into battle if trained properly, and were the preferred horse for lower-class fighters such as archers or men-at-arms. As it described a riding horse, these horses came in all shapes and sizes, from all lineages, and in all colors. In peacetime they could be used to draw carriages or work fields. A proud and expensive destrier would never be caught pulling a plow.
The Palfrey
A highly-bred, highly trained horse, this horse is a high quality riding horse known for a specific gait, called an ambling gait. This horse had a special pattern of moving its feet that gave the rider a considerably more comfortable ride than the traditional 4 gaited horse. After the middle ages, these horses almost disappeared, only to be recovered in the Americas in the form of 'gaited' horses such as the Paso Fino, the Rocky Mountain Horse, the Missouri Foxtrotter, and the Tennessee Walking Horse. The Icelandic horse has also retained the special Tölt gait that may* be the exact gait of medieval ambling horses.
*may, I am not a gaited horse expert.
The Packhorse
This describes any kind of horse, usually a rouncey, that is used not for riding but to carry supplies. Packhorses could also be mules, donkeys, and ponies, so long as they could carry weight for long miles. These were supply horses, carrying food, weapons, tents, whatever else may be needed.
Knights, Horses, and the Battlefield
^ What an incredible creature of power and nobility. The man is fine too, I guess.
Now, if you have seen the above scene, you have probably seen The Hollow Crown, a historical drama with a few late Medieval battle scenes. In these scenes, knight clashes against knight in a furious charge, leading to pitched battles on horseback. I'm not going to say that never happened, but by and large cavalry was directed against infantry, not other cavalry, or used to conduct maneuvers requiring speed and surprise, such as a charge, a circling maneuver, a bluff retreat and most importantly, to chase down routing enemy soldiers. A knight on horseback was most effective in close quarters against unmounted and surprised soldiers. Lances were the primary weapon, allowing a mounted warrior length to spear and batter down at enemies, and a sword was secondary, as it had a shorter length, and would be used if a mounted warrior was surrounded by infantry or in battle against another knight. Throughout the medieval period, horses sometimes were removed from the fight all together due to unfavorable land, and kept in reserve to either help the army flee or to chase down the fleeing enemy.
Hungry for more?
There are many sources out there to learn more about the medieval period and knights in particular. I would highly recommend that you not look at Medieval Times sources, if only because better sources are out there. I enjoy the videos produce by Jason Kingsley CBE (Yes, that Jason Kingsley CBE) on his Modern History TV YouTube Channel, and find them to be accurate as far as I'm aware.

My 2 cents on the Critics Choice Nomination
I think everyone's been confusing Fan Favorite & Better Actor. YES, we love Sam as Lestat. And YES, we love Lestat. But fake-blonde white man to fake-blonde white man, who REALLY did a better job in S2: Ben Daniels as Santiago, or Sam Reid as Lestat?
Cuz what's interesting is that Ben Daniels hasn't been part of this convo at all.
And it's THIS snub, IMO, that's actually the most telling, most egregious flex of AMC's OBVIOUS priorities to guarantee that Sam Reid has all the attention & accolades in his pocket ready to go in time for S3, when Lestat is the MC.
Even before S2 aired, the reviews were singing Ben's praises, saying he was giving Sam a run for his money as THE campiest & most entertaining character in S2.
Esp. since we don't get the maliciously charming Lestat in S2--that was Season ONE Lestat. Sam was BARELY in S2; we mostly only got Dreamstat, who's far more chill & seductive & even SWEET/romantic. That was NOT the pony-on-meth meme he was in S1. His most prominent part (aside from 2x3) was the Trial in 2x7, when he had to share the stage with Ben. And NGL, Ben was putting Sam through his paces darn near the whole time. Ben Daniels was in more scenes than Sam, and had a MUCH bigger stage presence all season.
But for some strange reason, Ben NEVER comes up in these award nominations. This is how I know the fix is in, and they're rigging the game in Sam's favor. He's got white privilege AND pretty privilege, lord have mercy.
Is it Sam's fault? Definitely not. But is it undeserved? Arguably yes! This is the media machine making sure fan favorite Sam/Lestat's rollout for S3 is pitch perfect. 👌
Now S3 can flex that its main actor's been nominated for XYZ, and bring in all the extra press & media attention that S1 AND S2 were sorely lacking.
IWTV is FINALLY on Netflix & all these more accessible streaming platforms, just in time to garner interest in S3.
Coincidence?
I've been pissed at AMC for sabotaging this show (and specifically Jacob) ever since S1. Jacob walked so Sam could run, as usual in Blaxploitation. That's beating a dead horse--Bipoc fans have been screaming since Day 1 that the white media machine DGAF about us, and only care about Asians up to a certain point--esp. not if you're dark-skinned & Muslim. So I totally get them not giving Assad any shine--he didn't stand a effing chance, DUH.
But not giving THE most consistently present white male supporting actor in S2 any shine is FAR stranger; and it's what convinces me most of all that AMC is deliberately pushing Sam forward cuz they know Sam's pretty face is gonna carry this whole show going forward, even when they KNOW his presence in S2 was lacking. EVERY reactor I've seen complained about how much they missed Lestat & wished he was in the season more. So how in the HELL is Sam the one getting nominated over everyone else who's been in the season more than him? SUS!

FUN FACT: i actually did not plan on making salauddin a love interest or at least not have so many cutesy moments with our reader but then i wanted to write a muslim character and make him attractive without u know going all pda and touchy touchy with mc like most characters do. i wanted to make him show affection, show love and interest and care while staying in his limits according to his religion. the kohl scene was a lil him testing his boundaries but i just couldnt resist NOT writing it down. maybe one of yalls s/o or future s/o (especiallay muslim men) could read and take notes instead of thinking haunting adeline is the norm for booktok girlies😭

Hii!! I just finished the demo for the game and can I just say I am so in love with Rayyan 😭 he’s so cute to me. It’s even funnier cause I’m also a competitive tennis player and a Muslim too and it’s super fun seeing that kind of person be in a story. I can’t stop thinking about doing basic cultural/religious things w them :’) the actions can be so basic and/or domestic but with Rayyan, it makes the idea so much fun yknow like imagine eating breakfast together during Ramadan?? Chefs kiss. It would be so fun with them.
I never expected there to be an IF about tennis tbh so this was really fun to read. During the match scenes, I think I probably spent a little too much time and thinking in the matches because I got too excited (I brought out ms paint and the court diagram to figure out what choices would work best)
I’m usually not a slice of life fan but this IF really got me tied down to it 🥺 I love it sm and I’m looking forward to future chapters. Thank you for creating this ❤️
Awww this is adorable, I can definitely imagine MC and Rayyan having a sleepy, breakfast together long before the sun comes up, still too early to be talking much, but enjoying each other's company.
It's also so good to hear that you found the matches engaging :) thanks for the lovely message!

People also just make their atheists mcs so boring, as someone who had gone through a fucked up crisis of faith during my teen years I can say with certainly it was not a purely logical thing but a combination of a bunch of factors and a lot for weird emotions, like my relationship with grief, luck, and what it means to be a "deviant". Like guys just make your atheists just as weird as your religious folk, atheists aren't some magically more knowledgeable and logical beings, I dont believe a good god can exist yet I still rant to god/universe sometimes, I also believe in free will but I also sometimes worry that fate itself is conspiring against me, I belive in living for yourself but I still loosely follow some teachings I grew up with (mostly the ones about remembering those poorer from you exist and that you shouldn't waste food, and that you shouldnt do harmful things unless its strictlynecessaryto protect yourself)
(Then again I think the reason so many atheist mcs are so boring to me is because almost all of them come from a white atheist former Christian perspective, while I grew up shia muslim and identify as agonists rather than strictly atheist, so my maybe I just got bored from seeing the same perspective over and over)
nah i get that cuz like even tho i guess im technically athiest or agnostic too (used to ID as agnostic but now i dont ID as anything cuz i feel like those imply a history with belief that i just Don't Have lol. i think for a long time it was just "how tf would i know" and that was that) and athiest characters can be so bizarre to me cuz like. i was raised catholic but i literally didnt ever believe in it cuz it didn't make sense to me. but i thought of it as like, a cool cultural thing i guess?? and I didn't really realize people were serious until i was like 11 lmao. and even then i grew outta that smarmy athiest shit when i was like 14 fasdfdsfasdf
but a lotta athiest characters used to believe and then stopped at some point and its like.. is that why they can't be normal about it? do they have any spirituality or wonder or are they full time committed to The Bit? idk. its weird.
i mean part of the reason im trying to world build so much for hanheppi people is that i just don't grok religion. reading from the perspectives of other religious people kind of broadened my horizons but i just dont really get it and idk how to have my questions answered without it sounding like im taking the piss or smth lol. so im just doing more research but like. REALLY slowly.
really slowly because i keep getting caught up in world building things that i do understand better, like hierarchy and city planning and the gender system :p
im supposed to be doing my final on Hanheppi faith and I straight up still do not really get religion. BTW if you're reading this and are religious, or weren't and converted, or you used to be, can u let me know what the fuck is up I am DYING to understand cuz I have, like, a genuine appreciation for the spiritual. I fuck with an adoration of nature and the world around you and big overwhelming emotions, i just can't connect that shit to religion.
honestly there's almost TOO many books about it. It's hard for me to figure out which of these millions of religious books to read because there are so many, with insane biases and history im not aware of, and i have no idea which ones will give me the insight I'll need to Really Lock In.
I understand a lot of surface level ideas about being religious but when people describe it to me what I don't really get is how all of that then transfers into you going "and so that's why i've converted to Buddhism" or something. like what makes it all funnel into the choice of one specific religion rather than another.
ok sorry this ask got away from me. point is: yeagh

One time when I was a teen, I was watching an American TV show and a character in one of the episodes was horribly and wrongly explaining something to the main characters and one of the MCs was like oh I read about this in Islam and it's called "talaq" and she made it seem like a very mysterious and complex ritual and stuff.
Anyways, the word talaq is just divorce in Arabic lmao.
Also guess what they portrayed the Muslim character in the show as😍😍💣💣

I do like that Zachary Ying and the Dragon Emperor does include the characters having a discussion about theological implications of magic, spirits, and the Chinese underworld being real. especially given that the mc is religious (Muslim) and the question would matter.
Lots of things like to skip over characters having any questions about religion in the face of finding out magic is real.

so PLEASE anyone correct me if i’m wrong, but from what i remember, when honouring ramadan it is allowed to eat before/after the sun sets?
it could be nice if during whenever the month falls the team or mc could do like group meals with rayyan so they’re not honouring it alone? especially if they don’t have a large muslim support system at cargill
but if that’s completely wrong/insensitive then that’s completely fine as well!
Ahh!! I love that idea its so wholesome 😍 😊 definitely will incorporate it into the IF- From what I know (please feel free to correct me), Ramadan follows the lunar calendar so the date varies from year to year, but it would usually fall during the Spring semester (this year it was from 11 Mar to 9 Apr) so that would make it 100% possible for the team to make an effort to break fast with Rayyan as a team, after afternoon training!
I can imagine Deepal/MC shifting their morning runs even earlier (so Rayyan can eat before the sun rises) or later (after Rayyan has eaten) too.
