Sirius flopped onto Lily's sofa, "Only two days to go!" They shouted, Lily waiting for the popcorn to finish popping. 

She shouted back from the kitchen, "I feel like we're being so petty?" 

"So what? We deserve to be." 

Lily snorted, carrying the bowl over, "What if Tuney comes?

"She won't", Sirius argued, swinging their legs into a sitting position and grabbing the remote, "What we should be worrying about is if Moony shows up." 

Lily rolled her eyes, "Your ex is not going to show up, no exes show up to their exes gigs, especially one as horrible as you write him to be." 

Sirius pouted, "I miss him." 

Lily grabbed her guitar with a sigh, strumming it and starting to sing one of Sirius' songs. 

Modern au where Lily and Sirius are famous musicians and fairly new friends that decide to create a 'revenge' 3 week long concert together where they sing their own songs about those that hurt them, as well as some covers, and songs they made just for the concert. But through the 3 weeks, people from their past show up and they realise their lives are a lot more intertwined than they thought

i've never read it, and i can't really see any situation in which i will. not only am i wolfstar-ambivalent, i'm also wizards-knowing-loads-about-muggle-pop-culture-ambivalent - so i'm very much not the target audience.

[although i'm not "what's going on in the 1970s"-ambivalent by any means, so there's that.]

but i suspect anyone who reads this blog regularly knew that - and so i also suspect [even though i wouldn't dare to assume this of you and your intentions in asking this, anon] that it might be presumed that i'm going to pop off about several of the phenomena all the young dudes has set into motion...

and sure, the contemporary marauders subfandom is not a space i'm interested in spending any time in - which is why i don't - but i think it's nonetheless worth saying something in defence of it.

all the young dudes deserves more credit than i think it gets in the fandom more widely - especially in those bits of the fandom which are more interested in canon compliance and canon coherence - for being a genuine pop-culture phenomenon. all corners of the fandom have benefitted from this - i guarantee that huge numbers of people who have returned to the harry potter fandom since 2020 have done so because they've read it [or, at the very least, heard of it], and i also guarantee that many of those people have gone on to make a home for themselves in spaces which seem to have very little in common with the marauders subfandom [such as canon-compliant jily or pro-snape spaces]. many of the things it does - especially the integration of muggle pop-culture into its worldbuilding - have clearly influenced how plenty of authors approach their own work, even if that work is otherwise removed from it in vibe. and its aesthetic is all over the non-fic aspects of fandom too - every "canon-compliant" moodboard or edit or playlist i've ever seen would fit well into the atyd universe. i think it doesn't hurt to acknowledge its influence - it doesn't mean that an author can't disagree with its approach.

[or: my view on all the young dudes is very similar to my view on taylor swift. i've never listened to a single one of her albums, i'm not sure i could name more than about five of her songs - and i don't think the five i can name are any good, i sometimes see flashes of the inter-swiftie discourse and it's like reading a text in a language i can only half speak - but i would be a fool to dismiss her broader pop-culture influence, including on musicians i do follow more closely, or the fact that the fandom which surrounds her is both sincerely interesting, not least from an anthropological perspective, and something in which people i like and respect participate.]

i also don't think the divisions between the marauders subfandom and other spaces are as clear-cut as is often made out. and i think that all the young dudes often gets used as a stick with which to beat this point - particularly because people in the marauders subfandom are frequently accused of not having read the books, and elevating atyd's interpretation of characters [especially sirius and remus] and events over the seven-book series.

that the subfandom elevates fanon and headcanon over canon is a legitimate point. but i think we should all get a fucking grip and recognise that this can disinterest us - or even annoy us - and still not be something any of us should think is that deep.

after all, like anyone, i've encountered people in fandom who write unrecognisable versions of characters, are completely resistant to the idea that their interpretation isn't correct, and believe that it's evidence of deep-seated prejudice to pair their faves with different people... and every single one is someone who believes that their approach is meticulously canon-compliant.

or - as the old adage goes - "people who live in glass subfandoms shouldn't throw stones at roadman remus".

marauders era faceclaims/fancasts but it's all musicians from the 60s-80s because i am insane. let's go

first up is kate bush as lily! this felt so obvious. even though she's not a ginger and her eyes are hazel (i think?) instead of green, there's something so sweet and warm about her that makes her a perfect lily to me. and omg the pics of her as a child are sooo ridiculously cute.

next up is andy partridge (my beloved) as james. he is in fact blond but i think the glasses are a wonderful coincidence. and he has a great face for james, very british-looking. honorable mention to steve albini who was my original pick but wasn't quite right (not very british-looking, does have black hair tho) – just wanted to mention that because i really only wanted to include him in this post to piss him off

young chris cornell is literally scary accurate for sirius like his face might as well be directly lifted from my BRAIN. i was really hoping to find a 70s musician for him (these pics are from the late 80s) just for consistency among the marauders, but this was too good not to use

next is alex chilton as remus. the pic on the left was when he was literally 17, while the middle one (and presumably the right one?) are when he's older. i might just be picking him because he reminds me of andrew garfield, who i don't even like as a fancast for remus, but he's infiltrated my subconscious nonetheless. also look at his little peace signs, isn't he so cute and silly and quirky? ok moving on

i'll be honest i struggled with peter but i think i'm pretty happy with greg lake here. the hair is a little dated (these pics are probably from the late 60s?) but i like his big round face. and come on i needed SOMEONE from a prog rock band in this post. it just feels right for it to be peter

alright i really struggled with snape so i'm including a few options and i really want to hear which one people like the best. personally i think the best fit is unfortunately young marilyn manson (first two pics). i was originally going to go with todd rundgren (next two) because of the long face, long hair, bad teeth... why are you booing me i'm right. i like that todd is a 70s guy because it feels more consistent with the other characters, but marilyn's got the goth factor... overall i think they're both DECENT, but i'm not sure if either one has quite the right nose. what do you guys think?

also shoutout to my many rejected snape picks, including steve peregrin took from t rex (not bad but not amazing, i debated including pics but this post is already long enough), rozz williams (too cool-looking), roger waters (meh), and frank zappa (PERFECT nose, but no good pictures without the giant mustache and the rest of his face isn't very snapey to me).

Okay Snily friends! Hi! My Name is Shay and while yes I'm a Jily girlie, I come to your tag bearing gifts (sorta? Idk) anyway, In my language (Arabic) there has been this poem (turned song) that I have always associated with Snily ever since I was a young girl because the lyrics are so crazy spot on it lowkey feels like it was written about this specific ship (it was actually written based on a true story which is heartbreaking when considering the lyrics).

The poem name is (Ana Wa Layla) and it translates to (Me and Layla). A little background on this bit, Qais and Layla are pretty much the equivalent of Romeo and Juliet for Arabs. And the name Layla in Arabic is Written almost exactly like Lily minus two dots.

So the song title could be easily read as (Me and Lily). I'll post the lyrics below and you can be the judge of how well it fits the context of the relationship between Snape and Lily (you're the experts after all and I'm a mere outsider).

(Keep in mind that 1- I am not a professional translator and Arabic is HARD language to translate so I might lose some meanings in the process. And 2- I will only be posting the English translation of the lyrics here so if you'd like to have the Arabic ones let me know and I'll send them to you)

The poem/song starts with a calm symphony (showcasing sorrow) and the first words are a line describing Laila's Lily's eyes:

"My pleas and prayers have died in the alter of your eyes"

And then it's followed by:

"And my flags surrendered to the winds of despair"

"My days shriveled at your closed and locked door"

" Oh Laila Lily"

"And what results did my cries get?"

The musical part that follows these words is more upbeat because the singer/musician wanted the musical intermission between lines to be interrupted as someone reliving their happy memories.

The music then calms again bringing us back to the current state of sorrow and the following lyrics are:

"For two years I couldn't make any music" the literal meaning isn't necessarily about music, it's about the poet losing his passion for everything for two whole years. In the context of Snily it could be interpreted as 6th and 7th years after the events of SWM.

"And there is no light in my skies anymore"

"I released the love in my heart and crushed it, so I could drink the grief that comes out of it in the dirtiest chalice" apologizes for my rough translation, the dirty chalice metaphor is supposed to be a symbol of feeling abandoned.

"I am so torn apart"

"I had no prestige or luxury to tempt you with" this line is talking about the guy Laila left the poet for *Ahem*James *Ahem* since he was far richer and from a well known family (not that Lily would fall for such shallow things as money and fame, but Laila did and that's just how the poem goes)

"So leave me with my pain"

"If you squeeze all the years of my life, you'll find blood dripping from all of my wounds"

"If I had been able to offer luxury, you would not have refused my love"

"But the roughness of my situation.."

"The poorness of my situation.."

"The weakness of my situation.."

"Is my tragedy"

"I suffered, Oh I suffered"

"But I have not revealed my sorrow, and you don't know a thing about my suffering"

"I walk and smile, oh Layla Lily, because I'm stubbornly hoping I could hide my inner demise from those around me"

"For people don't know what is wrong with me to excuse me"

"And they wouldn't even know how to console me"

"Deprivation rests upon my brow and sucks my blood"

"And it allows itself to take away my smiles too"

"But rest assured I forgive you for aborting all my hopes"

"It was never your fault..it was my foolishness" him calling her mudblood in front of everyone in SWM.

This part is followed by upbeat music again, signaling that the happy memories segment is back again before we enter the 2nd part of the poem/song. The poet mentions his reunion with Layla and how hurt he was after that reunion. Personally I feel this part somewhat describes the fall that happened between Snape and Lily (and maybe specifically the talk they had outside of Gryffindor's tower that was signaling the beginning of the end).

"I lost my caravan in the desert"

"And came searching for myself in your eyes" self explanatory line when it comes to Lily's eyes.

"And I seeked warmth in your embrace"

"Like a child carrying my naive dreams" Snape hoping they could go back to how things were before the incident.

"But instead your planted your palms into my soul, and pulled apart my veins" Lily still being bitter and upset about the situation.

"and you mercilessly suppressed my joy"

Another music intermission followed by:

"And now I'm estranged from my home"

"My city has abandoned me"

"And my sailboat couldn't sail away from her"

Dramatic music pause.

"I was exiled, and strangers settled in my country, and they have destroyed everything that I loved" another line about the guy Laila Lily chose over him.

"Your eyes betrayed you" x3 seriously can this poem/song could be anymore Lily Evans coded??

"Believing their fraudulent and lying nature.."

"Or was it his shiny armor that fooled you, My Lady.."

The music in this part starts picking up again where the poet/singer starts coming into terms with his loss and starts making peace with the fact that he will have to live with it

I have seen some fascinating characterizations of Evan Rosier from others, which is brilliant because he’s close to a blank slate in canon! It may be helpful to see how I build my characters based on canon.

Here’s what we know about Evan:

From a pureblood family. Possibly related to the Black sisters through their mother, Druella (Rosier) Black.

In Slytherin, and part of a gang of future Death Eaters that Snape hung out with, including Wilkes, Mulciber, and Avery.

Was a fierce duelist who took out a chunk of Moody’s nose (Moody was an experienced Auror and considered a powerful fighter)

Chose to fight to the death rather than be captured or surrender. Was killed by Mad-Eye Moody.

Here’s what is logical for us to assume:

Brave, fearless, and violent

Dedicated to Voldemort’s cause and believed in pureblood supremacy

Killed Aurors and/or muggleborns (one of the few Death Eaters that we know was actively fighting in the First Wizarding War)

Close to Barty Crouch Jr. (based on Barty’s reaction to the mention of Evan’s name during Igor’s trial and his targeting Mad-Eye Moody well before he teaches at Hogwarts)

Knowledgeable of Dark Arts

Raised in a household that espoused pureblood supremacist ideals (multi-generational Death Eaters)

Pureblood supremacy reinforced at Hogwarts (by other Slytherin students and his friends)

Here are my personal head canons about Evan (based on the above and my imagination)

Close to his family and has at least one sibling (I like to write Pandora Lovegood as his sister, but I’ve seen others add Felix as a younger brother). He gives me protective older brother vibes.

Intelligent, but not particularly interested in school. Favorite class is Care of Magical Creatures because it’s outdoors and potentially dangerous. Definitely in dueling club.

Generally keeps to himself when he’s not around his friends. (I do find it interesting that Snape’s “gang” are not referred to as friends).

Friends with Barty and Regulus

In a modern muggle AU:

Shaggy blonde hair, average height and build, physically unremarkable.

Bisexual or Demisexual

Ambivert

Prefers a few close friends to several acquaintances. Is codependent with his close friends, but not in a clingy way.

Avid weed smoker (pure vibes)

Tattoo artist/Musician-drummer/Fry Cook

Skipped university, or didn’t put in much effort

Would choose tattoos over piercings

Slow to anger, but holds a fierce grudge

When Muggle Studies Met Potions.... Part 2

It pretty much did in your opinion. You sat there, wondering what to say to the man you just bumped into who made you weak at the knees in both a good and bad way. It was awkward, with professors engaged in conversation on either side of the both of you while you had to sit there in silence. The tension was thick enough to cut through, thick enough for everyone to see it surround you two. You couldn’t believe your sense when you realised it was Snape who tried to end the silence. He was not one for talking, let alone talking for the sake of talking. “How are you feeling after your little bump? I know the floor is awful to fall onto” He practically whispered while staring forwards out to the hall. He just wouldn’t look at you even when you replied, “I may get a bruise but it’s not like anyone would see it” You chuckled. Snape didn’t know what to say so you added, “Thank you for the concern, Professor Snape”. You had to admit, it was incredibly awkward. “It’s Severus, unless you want to sound like an annoying student” He replied. “Anyway, what was that infernal thing you were wearing when you were being careless in the hallway?” You thought about how you’d tell him what on earth phones and headphones were, but you had an idea. “After dinner, come to my classroom and I’ll happily show you how it works and tell you what it is?” You didn’t receive an answer, but you thought his curiosity had been piqued enough to warrant a visit from him. You didn’t poke for a response and just ate your dinner.

Once you’d finished you walked back to your office to tidy both the room and yourself up. You felt nervous, you didn’t want to be nervous. Yes, he was mysterious, yes, he was passive-aggressive, but you could not hide your desire to get to know him, and find his soft side. You started to mark some of the last papers in that pile you abandoned to go to dinner; if anything was going to distract you from the nerves and worry, you’d be stood up, and it’d be that. Just as you had finished the last essay, you heard the door open. He showed up. Why did he show up? You couldn’t help but think it; he hated your chosen field of interest and yet, here he was. “Oh, Severus, you came...” You half muttered to him. “You did tell me to come, Professor Y/L/N” he replied “And contrary to everyone’s gossiping and beliefs, I’m not that rude. I wouldn’t ignore an invite extended in kindness, to learn” he whispered, seemingly feeling somewhat hurt by his reputation. “If I am to call you Severus as to ‘not sound like an annoying student’, then you simply have to call me Y/N; I think it’s only fair,” you told the man who looked rather handsome in the candlelight. “If you insist” Severus hissed in his usual way. You smiled slightly and told him all about smartphones and headphones and what their purposes were, and you enjoyed teaching him.

After what was probably seen by Snape as a lecture, you put the headphones over his ears much to his dismay. You then got the phone and opened Spotify to play your favourite song; safe to say, it made him jump just a little bit, which you thought was quite cute. Once the song was over, he asked to look at the phone to see what other songs were on there; he wanted to see if there were any songs he knew, maybe some musicians from the wizarding world put their music on there or made muggle music too. You then told him “You can listen without the headphones, Severus, let the music play out the phone” He took the headphones off and gave them to you so you could do whatever it was you needed to do. A song starts playing through the phone and you turn it up, moving towards him you place the phone on a table and ask for his hand. You were feeling brave at this point and practically forced him to dance with you to the music. “Why are you dancing with me, Y/N?” Snape asked tentatively. “Why not?” You replied, already sad before hearing the answer. “No one ever wants to dance with me, no one here even likes me,” He whispered, clearly worried about the response “Everyone thinks I’m just mean, evil even, when I’m just too used to being alone”. You tightened the grip on his hand, wanting him to know that not everyone thought that. “I don’t think that, not everyone thinks that. Not really,” You said, trying to comfort him “In fact, I quite like you”.

He didn’t know how to react. He had never been on the receiving end of something like that. He wanted to say something but didn’t know what. He could tell his silence was making the situation even more uncomfortable. “I’m sorry, Severus, forget I said anything if that makes it easier” you shyly offered him. He liked being liked especially by someone like you. “No, I appreciate the sentiment and am glad I have at least one friend by the sounds of it” He thanked you. “I have always had a soft spot for you, your kindness, your naivety, you never let anyone feel alone or silly for anything” He admitted. You blushed, feeling embarrassed and nervous. “Right, well, thank you but it’s getting late so we should be going to bed so that we can be ready for our lessons tomorrow,” you said, trying to pack up. You tried to walk past Severus and he grabbed your arm to stop you, “At least let us finish this conversation at some point tomorrow?” he asked. “Okay,” you said, “but only if you bring me some food and butterbeer when you do”. Giggling, you walked away to your room ready to dream about your potential growing relationship with Severus Snape.
