Seeking advice from folks who hopefully have more knowledge than me for three very different kinds ofnew (to me) music to listen to in the coming year:
- choral, shapenote and plainchant music that *isn’t* Christmas carols. I fucking adore music from these genres every year at Christmas and then realise I don’t know where to look for more that isn’t Christmassy. I did a bit of a short dive when we were watching Carols From Kings this year and saw some potential pointers, but please point me at your favourites. Modern or traditional arrangements of medieval, renaissance and 17th century work, or newer works; please, lay them on me!
- modern music made by indigenous peoples from the Americas, Sami, Mongolian Steppes, Ainu, Australian Aboriginal folk and South Pacific Islanders. I don’t mind the genres, but I’d really love to hear more music people who have been so marginalised and silenced are making now with the internet to share and distribute it, and hopefully ways to get paid for it too on places like Bandcamp. I’ve heard some stunning modern Mongolian throat singing and rapping and I’ve seen incredible mixes of traditional and modern dance from folk like Notorious Cree, but I admit I’m not 100% sure where to start in looking for more. If this is your music, please put ways I can pay you to listen to your music because I’m very aware how shitty streaming services are for that!
- good writing playlists of 1910s music hall and 1920s Chicago jazz and blues; I’m working on a queer urban fantasy novel set in 1920s Chicago with significant flashbacks to 1910s England and it’s always nice to have soundtracks to set the mood while you write!

MONDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “Something About Suburbia” by Tim a.k.a. Chris Andrews 55th Anniversary Video Edition! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGbYBpyaANs  In May 1968, this was the B-side of a single that disc jockeys favored over the A-side—perhaps because they wanted to live in the ‘burbs. Written by Rod Thomas, the sing-along-song puts British music hall with mod pop. He wrote it as “a young man working in a steel works in Cardiff while living some eight miles away in a quiet village.” On a cosmic jukebox it would play next to Herman’s Hermits, The Kinks, and The Monkees. The recording session (at Abbey Road) put Tim together with the talented Paul Korda, who’d become Tim’s musical partner for the next couple years. Paul produced this track with orchestration by Cy Payne (Brotherhood of Man, Idle Race). The song also appeared in the 1968 film “The Tyrant King” and it became the masthead for the 2013 Cherry Red compilation CD that celebrated the music of Chris/Tim and Fleur de Lys.
If this is your introduction to Chris Andrews, he’s a British singer-songwriter and recording artist whose songs have been covered by Roger Daltrey, David Essex, and Davy Jones (Monkees)—with whom Chris worked with for years (Davy could’ve sung this song). Under the name Tim Andrews, Chris was a champion of late 60s psychedelic pop and (later), as Kris Ryder, he released New Wave synthpop sides in the 80s. Chris was also part of the seminal freakbeat band Fleur de Lys. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGbYBpyaANs

Another wander through the canyons of his mind …
Mercurial muso Phil Jackson takes us on more mental (as in pertaining to the mind, not, well, ‘mental’) meanderings on his latest release Wildberry. What Phil describes as “a story and a journey in a diary of random songs and instrumentals that give a feel and glimpse into my mind at this moment in time” is a mellow soundtrack to Suffolk life that exudes a summery vibe that maybe belies the underlying realities: from cod cowboy country in There’s A New Horizon, to the Neil Innesesque musichall psychedelic rag of In My Garden; and from the Western-twang-spiked bluesy slink of American Heat to You Go Walkin’’s very 80s Bergerac accordion-laced-reggae languid lope.
Click Click (poking fun at the Insta generation? American tourists? the surveillance state?) with its low near spoken drawl and a rag you could happily set Laurel and Hardy’s little dance to, brings more country flavours; On A Rainy Day’s pealing acoustic trilling piano and synth wash call to mind (my mind, at least) a chill room Slave To The Rhythm as rendered by the Spandau boys; while the title track’s backporch boogie evokes Bob Dylan jamming with JJ Cale and Marc Bolan (with some nice slide accents and a wild organ break!)
Three instrumentals punctuate the album: Phil taps his inner Debussy with some fine piano in both the rippling, dripping, burbling Water, and the hypnotic The Wind And The Sea (dare I say, a candidate for proper ‘art’ music?); while Pyjamas combines a bustling Ibiza beat with a sitar-mimicking rising and falling acoustic guitar for a touch of upbeat (but still relaxed) new agery, complete with subcontinental string wash and farfisa/synth melismatic warbling lines.
Bookending the album are the reflective, contemplative piano and breathy vox of opener Curious One, and the closing, Donovan-ish, Macy with its high falsetto wordless ornamentation and a surprisingly anthemic progression (leaving Plunger waiting in vain for a ‘break out’ into a festival scarf-waver!)
Singlehandedly (barring the hoofbeat percussion underpinning there’s a new horizon courtesy of cajonist Jess Davies) Phil has produced another laid back quirky wry collection that’s perfect for heatwave vegging in Wimbledon fortnight… forget strawberries, have some Wildberry!
Wildberry is available now for streaming/download (and a vinyl option as well) from Phil’s Bandccamp site: https://philjackson.bandcamp.com/album/wildberry
There are videos for several of the songs on his YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@jacksonmusicman/videos

Saturday, I visited my old hometown for some sightseeing and nostalgia—and naturally fit in some record hunting. The ancient Tarrytown Music Hall has been well-revived in recent years after lying dormant for most of my youth; in addition to hosting the Nick Lowes and Nancy Griffiths of the world, it has a small two-room “record store” of donated vinyl above the marquee, deftly named Marquee Records. I didn’t find anything worth getting, but picked up a sweet Music Hall t-shirt. Around the block was a deli—that also had a plethora of used Mantovani for sale. Again, I didn’t get any vinyl, but I did get a bottled water…because I headed a mile south, parked, pulled my Dahon folding bike out of the trunk and rode across the Hudson River on The Bridge Formerly Known As Tappan Zee (as with most people who grew up in the area, I have a real problem with the fact that the new bridge that replaced The Tap has a different name; it will not be mentioned here). It was a gorgeous day and my inner 13-year-old, who once plotted with a friend how we could theoretically get to the Tap’s maintenance walkway underneath and cross the river was thrilled to get to finally live out the dream safely and legally!

🔵CHAPTER 250: A STAR IS BORN 🔵 Byron Giaskin was going home from his work as the police's doctor. Today he took a different way, sometimes he liked to change it, and as he was walking he passed Wilton Music Hall, or Wilton's. He didn't like places like this, he thought the morals were low in such places. What was his surprise when he saw his cousin Violet as being the star of the show! So against his will, he entered and took a drink as he was hearing some music and the sweetest voice ever, singing. There weren't many people, two lovebirds and some bachelors - or he thought so. With Violet, singing and dancing, there was Peter Edwards, Ann's brother. Both were very talented. He stayed all the show, he wanted to say hi to his cousin, he didn't know she was in town! #victorianplaymo #victorian_playmo #wiltons #wiltonsmusichall #playmobiltoys #playmobilfigures #playmobilcollector #victorianlondon #victorianera #victoriantimes #victorianplaymobil #playmobilpictures #playmobilphotos #musichall #artist #london1891 #victorianinspiration #victorianinspired #playmobil https://www.instagram.com/p/CKHFzP8puRt/?igshid=1b5zwvlp2g305
