Poem: To the Sea, to the Sea! The white gulls are crying
Tune: Walkley
Composer: Neely Bruce
Happy Easter (nearly) to all who celebrate it! Once again we’re breaking from tradition by breaking into Northern Harmony. I thought this tune and this poem would be particularly appropriate to the season: the original words to this tune deal with Jesus’ resurrection, and the motif of sea-journeys in Tolkien’s work has a lot to do with death and resurrection, taking inspiration from sources such as the Voyage of St Brendan and the Old English poem The Seafarer.
The words come from Legolas’ poem of sea-longing, in which he announces he will cross the sea and travel to Valinor - as he of course eventually did (but not without Gimli!). Metrically this poem is an absolute mess, so I have had to really play fast and loose with the syllables to get regular 11-syllable lines out of it, but I’m really happy with the result. Lyrics, heavily amended, are under the cut.
To Sea, to the Sea! The white gulls are crying,
The wind is blowing, and the white foam flying.
West now, west away, the round sun is falling.
Grey ship, O grey ship, do you hear them calling,
Voices of my people now gone before me?
I will leave, I will leave the woods that bore me;
For our days are ending and our years failing.
I will pass the wide waters lonely sailing.
Long, long are the waves on the Last Shore falling,
Sweet are the voices on the Lost Isle calling,
In Elvenhome that no man can discover,
Where leaves fall not: land of my people ever!

Seeking advice from folks who hopefully have more knowledge than me for three very different kinds ofnew (to me) music to listen to in the coming year:
- choral, shapenote and plainchant music that *isn’t* Christmas carols. I fucking adore music from these genres every year at Christmas and then realise I don’t know where to look for more that isn’t Christmassy. I did a bit of a short dive when we were watching Carols From Kings this year and saw some potential pointers, but please point me at your favourites. Modern or traditional arrangements of medieval, renaissance and 17th century work, or newer works; please, lay them on me!
- modern music made by indigenous peoples from the Americas, Sami, Mongolian Steppes, Ainu, Australian Aboriginal folk and South Pacific Islanders. I don’t mind the genres, but I’d really love to hear more music people who have been so marginalised and silenced are making now with the internet to share and distribute it, and hopefully ways to get paid for it too on places like Bandcamp. I’ve heard some stunning modern Mongolian throat singing and rapping and I’ve seen incredible mixes of traditional and modern dance from folk like Notorious Cree, but I admit I’m not 100% sure where to start in looking for more. If this is your music, please put ways I can pay you to listen to your music because I’m very aware how shitty streaming services are for that!
- good writing playlists of 1910s music hall and 1920s Chicago jazz and blues; I’m working on a queer urban fantasy novel set in 1920s Chicago with significant flashbacks to 1910s England and it’s always nice to have soundtracks to set the mood while you write!

Text from Watts (Isaac). Music from The Sacred Harp rev. 1991 (red book), Idumea 47b. Three lines on tenor, one on treble, one on alto down the octave (higher choice notes).
And must this body die? This well-wrought frame decay? And must these active Limbs of mine Lie mould'ring in the clay? Corruption, Earth and Worms Shall but refine this flesh, Till my triumphant Spirit comes To put it on afresh.

I saw a poll earlier about participation in regular in-person activities, with numbers that make me wonder if a lot of people don't know what the options are or how to find them. Here are some that I have always found welcoming to new people; for me, these are ways to leave my apartment and get some human interaction without having to make much conversation (there is a reasonable amount of that if you want it, but since it's understood that you are there to do an activity, the thing you are doing is the point rather than pure socializing). A search for "[activity] [location]" should tell you what's available in your area.
Contra dancing: This goes at the top and gets explanation because it's my favorite. I grew up doing this and love it very very much; I always look for local dances when I move somewhere new. Most dances are very beginner-friendly (though there are some exceptions), and zero dance experience is required to participate. Many will include a lesson for beginners in the half-hour before the main event starts, and there are always instructions throughout the evening. You truly do not need to know anything going in. The convention is to switch partners throughout the night, and it's completely okay to attend alone and ask people you don't know to dance. Try Contra Dancing has a search tool by zip code. Typically $8-15.
Community theatre tech: Acting is an option if that's your thing, but in my experience, tech is easier if you're looking for an activity because there's not usually competition--you often can just volunteer without needing to worry about auditions or casting. Roles like run crew (where you move set between scenes and such) don't require any prior knowledge, and plenty of the other tasks can be learned with a little training. If you turn up reliably, the word will spread--good techies are invaluable. Free to participate.
Community band or chorus: Prior experience in playing an instrument is necessary for the band; for singing, it depends on the type of chorus. Some are auditioned, others are just thrilled by any participation. May require dues.
Shapenote singing: A more niche one and another of my personal favorites (I ignore the religious lyrics and treat them as poetry). This can take some time to pick up, but many places have a small monthly sing that is very welcoming to new people. fasola.org has lots of information about the tradition and where to sing. Free, optional donations accepted.
Library events: Find your local public library's website and look for a calendar or events page to see if anything appeals. Typically free.
Crafting groups: Yarn stores and other craft supply places often have regular open gatherings (typically free) and/or classes (may cost money for teaching and supplies).
Games: If you have a local game store, check their website for events. Or search "[location] [chess club]" or whatever is your thing. Usually free.
Dance: Depends on what is available in your area. A studio where I am has a monthly swing dance, with beginner lessons before, for $10.
Sports: I don't really do these but they presumably exist and can be found like the other things.
The important thing is to just go do the thing. It will probably feel awkward the first time--that's normal! These are all spaces where the point is for people to show up and participate. They want you to be there, and they want you to come back! Otherwise they can't keep existing. Several of these (contra dancing, shapenote, a lot of crafting groups) are especially excited about new people and younger participants and will be thrilled to teach you how to do the thing. And the only way to make it feel comfortable is to plow through the first awkwardness and go back until you decide if you actually enjoy it or not. When you find a thing you like, keep going, and after a little while you end up with a community of people to see regularly who share your interests. This is what humans are supposed to do.

TRACK BY TRACK #3
this post is about Plenary
the title comes from a hymn from the Sacred Harp Book, sung to the tune of Auld Lang Syne
i started going to singings back in 2019, i was shy and i find it hard to read music
shapenote is supposed to be more accessible, but i’m not quite sure it is
lucky the harmonies are all so guessable
stopped going because of the pandemic but it was great to sing about death and crisis and salvation together
i am hoping to write some new shapenote songs soon- think its a good vessel for some contemporary concerns too
the hymn Plenary contains a line that it is sung at the end of our song Plenary
about being unprepared for death and v. v. sad about it
i think its about loss of faith maybe and then how its nice to cobble something together out of the ashes of faith
hybrid posable god figure with automatic grip function, comes with scuba expansion kit
hand of benediction into Vs up! Up yours!!
absolute spiritual cherry picking for maximum personal efficiency
thinking about doubting thomas actually putting his hand in
that priest that wrote rock of ages, sheltering in the mendips (I have just googled it and he was called Augustus Toplady, nice)
as a small gift here are my favourite from the red book:
Bridgewater
I Would See Jesus
Invocation (First)
Ballstown
Ode On Science
All Is Well
Rocky Road
Canaan’s Land
Present Joys
The Greived Soul
and a link to a website where a robot can sing u all the parts separately, and together
ending with the words from...
The Grieved Soul
Come, my soul and let us try
For a little season
Ev’ry burden to lay by,
Come and let us reason.
What is this that casts thee down?
Who are those that grieve thee?
Speak and let the worst be known?
Speaking may relieve thee.

I did not know I needed a merging of Tolkien's verses with Sacred Harp music but now I know I was in darkness and have now seen the light!
Poem: Song of Eärendil
Tune: 26 Samaria
Composer: Maggie Denson-Cagle, 1936
I return briefly to celebrate the discovery of Earendel, an unprecedentedly distant star detected by the Hubble telescope! The name is a reference to the Old English poem Christ I, where Earendel, meaning “shining ray”, is addressed: Eala Earendel, engla beorhtast - “Hail, Earendel, brightest of angels”. But since this line was where Tolkien got his Eärendil idea in the first place, I’m willing to bet that this wasn’t an Old English enthusiast but rather a hardcore Tolkien fan flexing.
This is, of course, another selection of verses from Bilbo’s poem about Eärendil, this time tweaked to focus on the moment when Elwing, in the form of a bird, reunites with Eärendil and brings him the Silmaril to light his way to Valinor. Birds, stars, the sea: what else does a story need?
Lyrics (abridged) are under the cut.

We had the “Social” at our house after the singing yesterday! Apparently, the “Social” is generally a traditional part of these multi-day Sacred Harp Conventions, a way to show hospitality to all the visiting singers; and we opted to host the one for the Western Mass Sacred Harp Convention at our big, queer house!! And let me tell you, this one turned into a proper, old school Northampton House Party!!!! With both floors filled with folks having a fine, fun time! Most, I opted to keep my phone well away, and just let events unfold unobserved by any not present. To just be in the glorious moment! So these are just a couple of random shots I took of the singing that broke out upstairs! One of TWO separate singings from different Shape Note books that were going on in adjacent rooms!! (We have good, thick walls!) I love our home!! And I love this community!!!! So much fun! So much LIFE!!!! #sacredharp #shapenote #wmshc #singing #shapenotesinging #sacredharpsinging #westernmass #westernmasssacredharpconvention #social #queer #transwoman #community #tradition #joy #wmshc2023 (at Northampton, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cptf35LMpwF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
