thinking about fandom and wicked and how having three different iterations of a story impact one another in the current fandom climate. because on one hand, fan creators have, for as long as i can remember, been fucking with elphaba’s gender expression and/or identity. i think it comes along with the whole ‘being born different from your peers/being born in a body that others you/ostracization for something you can’t control’ narrative she has going on. you can always identify with and relate with elphaba if you’ve ever felt outcasted in some way. and the gender fuckery goes a step further if you look at the book and the whole ‘elphaba was born with both genitals’ thing because there’s A Lot that could be unpacked there. so while it’s not like, a fandom headcanon or widespread trend or anything, people do and have been ascribing varying levels of femininity and androgyny and masculinity to elphaba
but then again. the masculinization of black women is a real and damaging stereotype/bias. and in that case hackles can be (rightfully, imo) raised if fan content depicts cynthia erivo’s elphaba in a non-feminine way. because her particular elphaba is fairly feminine and there is like, an actual precedent of misogynoir both irl and in fandom spaces.
i don’t really know what to make of it. i’ve always thought that since elphaba’s story is so widely relatable that it would make sense for any actor of a stigmatized group to play her (be it jewish like idina or black like cynthia) but it never occurred to me to think about how a new (explicitly black) iteration of the character would impact previously established fandom practice as wicked becomes even more mainstream and a whole new audience joins the fandom. would the solution be to use idina’s elphaba in fan content that wants to mess with elphaba’s gender expression? i feel like that would introduce a whole new set of problems if someone was also using ariana’s glinda or writing a fic taking from the movie
#wicked#wicked the musical#wicked movie#wicked 2024#elphaba thropp#wicked the movie#fandom discourse#meta#in case anyone who’s reading this is wondering: yes this was inspired by twt reacting to that one fanart of a gelphie fic#i’ve found myself thinking a lot about how fandom has changed and the interaction between fandom on different sites#wicked part one#fandom meta#discourse

forever obsessed with dynamics between vampires, specifically that of a maker and fledgling, as a way to explore abuse. the creation of a vampire itself can so easily be a literalization of the lasting impacts of trauma and also much more simply the ways a perpetrator might shape their victim’s very identity. the extremes of isolation in the way that the new vampire, in most narratives, must cut all ties to their mortal life, or else go through an elaborate charade to maintain the facade of humanity, while forever still being removed from it. and the sheer dependence and vulnerability of being in an entirely new state of being, wholly uncertain of what it entails, and relying on another person to define… everything.
#or just the moral dilemmas#rewatching amc interview is kind of making me insane#that moment in episode two when louis is looking for a sort of assurance in the fact that lestat may actually have some good in him#look at how he cares about music look at the simple wondrous things that can bring him joy#and then the immediate dread when the opera performance turns out to be imperfect because he knows how lestat will react to *that*#I think there’s also something really interesting in the highlighting of lestat upbraids the less skilled singer before killing him#(slowly)#but also I will wait to watch more before I articulate my thoughts#vampires#interview with the vampire#amc interview with the vampire#I do still find the lestat and claudia film and novel dynamic by far the most compelling for how she tries to usurp him but almost to be him#but I’m enjoying this#I’m very curious if I will like show claudia more on rewatch#the movie always resonated most with me (sue me lol) because there seemed to be more simultaneous fondness and attachment even at the end#dark stories of the north

The discussion around the fandomization of the I/P conflict is so fucking relevant because why did I just see someone in a discord for a reaction channel that reacts to musicals and cartoons suggest them to react to the Columbia ""protests"" with a heart emoji as if it's another episode of their favorite show and SIX other people agreed with that
#No seriously what the fuck#This is a reaction channel that does musicals and cartoons. Why do you think they want to suddenly talk about politics#Why are you suggesting violent (antisemitic) protests as if they're your favorite episode of a cartoon#Do you not see how fucked up that is#What would there even be to react to in the protest???#'oh wow those people sure are angry about Palestine. I agree. Oh wow they're screaming at Jews to go back to Poland how nice#'oh look they attacked someone how funny'#LIKE HELLO???#THIS ISN'T A NEWS CHANNEL IT'S A FUNNY GUY REACTING TO FUNNY SHOWS. HOW THE HELL DO YOU MAKE JOKES ABOUT THIS?#oh right I forgot this is a show for you guys#mango rambles#personal fruits#Jumblr#ישראבלר

Batfam Goes to See Hamilton (Thanks to Jason Todd)
note: based on the fact that i saw hamilton on broadway today!
So, Jason somehow managed to drag the entire Batfam to see Hamilton—because yes, Red Hood is a theater nerd, and apparently, none of them can say no when he’s excited about something. Here’s how it went down:
Jason Todd: Living for it. Jason knows all the lyrics by heart and is practically singing under his breath the whole time. He’s vibing hard to every song, mouthing along to My Shot like he’s in the show. You’d think he was a one-man standing ovation from the way he keeps reacting to every scene. He also goes full nerd mode explaining all the historical inaccuracies and why they don’t matter because the storytelling is incredible.
Bruce Wayne: Very confused, but engaged. He’s trying to get into it, but you can see the gears turning in his head, over-analyzing every political angle and historical context. He does appreciate the themes of legacy, sacrifice, and honor (classic Bruce). He might’ve even shed a few tears during It’s Quiet Uptown, but he’ll deny it forever.
Dick Grayson: Having the time of his life. Dick is the one clapping the loudest, laughing at all the jokes, and crying during the emotional songs. He’s completely caught up in the performance, and by the time The Room Where It Happens comes on, he’s all but bouncing in his seat. He also loves the choreography and probably made a mental note to learn the dances later.
Tim Drake: Secretly loving it but pretending to be indifferent. Tim walked in like he was only going to humor Jason, but by the end of Act 1, he’s fully invested. He tries to keep a straight face, but you can catch him mouthing the words to Wait for It and tapping his fingers during The Room Where It Happens. He’s obsessed with the way the show mixes history, strategy, and storytelling, and he’s definitely taking mental notes on things to google later for a deep dive into historical rabbit holes. After the show, he’s already re-watching bootleg clips on YouTube, but if anyone asks, he’ll just say, “It was fine.”
Damian Wayne: Not impressed. Damian doesn’t see the appeal. He’s sitting there with his arms crossed, giving side-eye to everyone clapping or singing along. “I could’ve done better,” he mutters after Guns and Ships, but you catch him tapping his foot during Yorktown, and he seems unusually focused during the duel scenes. Maybe it’s growing on him… but he’ll never admit it.
Stephanie Brown: Living her best life. Steph is totally into it. She’s laughing at all the jokes, especially King George’s bits, and probably even got Bruce to crack a smile. She’s belting out Helpless and Satisfied in her seat and whispering excitedly to Cass about how they should come back for the next performance. She’s already planning a Hamilton-themed karaoke night after.
Cassandra Cain: Loving the energy. Cass isn’t much for words, but she’s totally feeling the performance. The choreography and intensity of the actors keep her fully engaged. She’s watching every movement with laser focus, and you can see her appreciating the way the actors tell the story through body language. She’s not super vocal about it, but afterward, she signs to Jason that it was “powerful.”
Duke Thomas: Totally into the music. Duke is all about the beats and rhythm. He’s vibing in his seat, really feeling the music and lyrics. You catch him nodding along during Wait for It and The Room Where It Happens, and he’s probably already added the soundtrack to his Spotify. He’s impressed by the storytelling through music and keeps shooting Jason looks like, “Okay, you were right—this is awesome.”
At the end of the show, Jason’s the first to stand up, clapping like his life depends on it, and despite the varied reactions, everyone else follows suit.
#tim drake#jason todd#dick grayson#bruce wayne#damian wayne#stephanie brown#cassandra cain#duke thomas#batfam#the batfam go see hamilton#they all leave with a ne found appreciation for musical theater and a few new songs in their playlists#i just watched hamilton on broadway and it was the greatest thing ever#phillips actor naruto ran up the stairs and i lost it#they did so good like i think the cast did soo good embodying the characters#i already wanna go again#the reactions arent well thought out so i dont think this is accurate to how i think they would actually react ykwim?

currently thinking about how many times we see Till at various ages just...casually injured. Just appearing with scratches and bruises and sometimes blood for No Discernible Reason (the reason is very discernible and it makes me cry)
#the one of him as a literal toddler actually broke me though cause I actually didn't notice it until just now when rewatching round 6#I just paused at that screen and thought "hey I don't think it's normal for toddlers to have a bunch of red scratches on their cheek#then I thought too hard and cried#I also thought his bruises in black sorrow were just weird shading or appeared after he encountered the thing#but those bruises were there since the beginning of the music video#the lip one anyway#I wonder if any of the other kids ever asked him about it tbh#just going up and asking “hey why the fuck are you always injured”#I wonder how he'd react#alien stage#alnst#alnst till#alien stage till

This is it. I was just asking why react videos hit so hard and it's because sharing Music with people and watching it make them feel
i love reaction videos so much simply because my love language is showing people movies i like and watching them intently going "did you like it? did you see that part?"
