Music in various languages
I've talked about how interacting with different cultures is good, I figure I'll also try to recommend some songs. (many songs beneath the cut). I'm going to include a couple different genres, but obviously I won't be including every.
I hit audio limit :/
Norwegian language (Norway):
[Pt: Du må ikke sove by klarspråk]. [album: du må ikke sove. shows a warped photo of Donald Trump on tv.] genre: rock / (punk?) / spoken word / social criticism. it's an antifascist song, quoting a famous illegal WWII poem by the same title "you mustn't sleep".
[PT: regn & gitar by Jomas] [album: evig kronisk. shows man looking at a garden holding a retro phone.] It's a more soft quiet song about waiting for someone in the rain.
(I could recommend many more Norwegian songs so don't feel afraid to ask if you're at all interested)
Sámi language (Norway / Sweden / Finland / Russia):
I don't have the necessary letters on my keyboard to write PT. But this is a Inari Sami song by Amoc. I don't speak that language. here are the lyrics on genius. here's a dictionary, not sure if it's the right Sámi language. The genre is like atmospheric rock or something, the instruments are amazing.
[PT: áddjá by resirkulert] [album cover: áddjá] translation: grandfather (Sámi) by recycled (Norwegian). genre: yoik/joik - a Sami Music genre which is mostly about vocal technique.
French language (France / Benin / Congo / Democratic republic of Congo / Monaco / Senegal / Switzerland / Belgium / Ivory coast ++)
[PT: Soleil noir by 47ter] [album: petit princes. Photo of three boys on stairs]. A rap song by a trio from France. It's about "a black sun" about liking the dark and rain and not liking summer.
[PT: Déprime hostile by Pogo crash control]. [album: Déprime hostile. Shows a digital drawing of a head cut open with a cocktail]. genre: punk / metal. The band is from France. The song is about hostile depression or something.
[PT: plus rien ne m'étonne by Tiken Jah Fakoly]. [album: coup de guele. It shows a face pointed towards the ceiling]. The artist is from Ivory coast (AKA côte d'ivoire). genre: Reggae. It's about colonialism.
[PT: formidable by stromae]. [album: racine carée. it shows the side of a man's face, he has short hair]. The artist is Belgian. Genre: hip hop. The song is about a breakup or something.
Scots Gaelic (UK: Scotland)
[PT: Faileas air an airidh by Runrig]. [album: 50 great songs]. genre: traditional folk. The song is about waking up on a ship or something.
German language (Germany / Belgium / Austria / Switzerland)
[PT: 99 Luftballons by Nena]. [album: Nena]. Genre: synth pop / pop rock. This is an antiwar song from 1983 about the cold war.
A last song even though I hit Audio limit:
Kunst by Lebanon Hanover. (link). It is a gothic rock song about art.

“Father?”
Obviously, the first time Odysseus heard his son say that in ICHBW, he thinks it’s the sweetest sound he’s heard yet in this world. He treasures being called father of Telemachus, and more so from his son’s own lips.
As he settles back into home, however, he slowly starts to mourn what his son calls him. Penelope tells him Telemachus used to call her mommy, then Mom. He still calls her Mom. And he’s Father.
He tries to scold himself, to be thankful that his son is comfortable with him; they’re growing closer, Odysseus is showing his son how to carve and talking about his many adventures in the 20 years away from home (the least traumatic ones, anyway), and Telemachus is talking to him about Ithaca and how training with Athena is going, etc etc., but he’s always Father.
and he mourns that he missed the younger years where he would have been called daddy and Dad. He wants to be a Dad, not a Father.
He’s minding his business around the castle, thinking about whether Athena would like a carved mask or patch for her scarred eye as a gift, when he hears his son’s now familiar, memorized voice call him.
“Hey, Dad!”
He turns his head to see Telemachus, smiling (albeit a bit nervously) and waving for him to come over, pointing out at a bright pair of birds that are building a nest together. (Penelope definitely didn’t tell him that she’d heard Odysseus making miniature puppy eyes every time he called her Mom and Odysseus Father. Of course not.)
Telemachus nearly panics when Odysseus starts crying, figuring that he had some sort of trauma connected to birds (let’s be honest, what doesn’t he have PTSD with), and Odysseus just gives him a big ol bear hug, sniffling and muttering that he loves him.
Telemachus never calls him Father again.

As much as I adore conlangs, I really like how the Imperial Radch books handle language. The book is entirely in English but you're constantly aware that you're reading a "translation," both of the Radchaai language Breq speaks as default, and also the various other languages she encounters. We don't hear the words but we hear her fretting about terms of address (the beloathed gendering on Nilt) and concepts that do or don't translate (Awn switching out of Radchaai when she needs a language where "citizen," "civilized," and "Radchaai person" aren't all the same word) and noting people's registers and accents. The snatches of lyrics we hear don't scan or rhyme--even, and this is what sells it to me, the real-world songs with English lyrics, which get the same "literal translation" style as everything else--because we aren't hearing the actual words, we're hearing Breq's understanding of what they mean. I think it's a cool way to acknowledge linguistic complexity and some of the difficulties of multilingual/multicultural communication, which of course becomes a larger theme when we get to the plot with the Presgar Translators.
#imperial radch#also a great example of the 'you don't have to be Tolkien' phenomenon#if you want to think about linguistic differences by building all the languages in your setting#and being able to explain what those differences are through actual texts in the language in question#that's AWESOME#but it's not the only way to do it#it's also interesting because of course this style only works in book form#everyone's speaking different languages but in a written account they're all 'translated' for you#but of course if it was a TV series they would all have to be speaking a language the audience understands#(or you *would* have to go wild with conlangs)#and i think that's really cool as well--#how for a series where song is so central we don't actually hear any of the actual in-universe words or any of the music#it's all been filtered#and again you know this is happening but seeing the examples of how real songs--the shape hymns and 'L'homme Arme'--are presented#makes you a lot more viscerally aware of how limited your perspective is#it's good#ann leckie i love you

Still not over the difference in Jason and Victor’s delivery of the “we’re all real proud of you, buddy” line.
Because, at least imo from when I’ve seen him, Jason does that scene and line with this almost naive hopefulness. Like he’s telling Johnny they’re proud and he has this vibe of like wanting to say “we’re proud! Now just heal on up and we’ll get outta here.” He has this softer hope that Johnny will make it out of the woods and they’ll all be ok.
Versus Victor Soda who knows that Johnny is dying. He hasn’t quite accepted it, but he’s aware and he’s not pretending he doesn’t get it. His “we’re all real proud of you buddy” is his way of ensuring Johnny knows they love him, they know he fought hard, and he did good but it’s ok to let go now.
#but also this is just when I’ve seen them#they could do it others ways#or be interpreted different ways#this is just my take of when I saw them#also if anyone knows how Dan or JPC do the scene as soda and wants to add!#bc I have audios of them but I feel like the way this scene is done is so reliant on expressions and body language that idk how they really#played soda in this scene#:)#the outsiders musical#the outsiders broadway#sodapop curtis#victor carrillo tracey#jason schmidt

it's crazy how the neva flows and my petersburg happen right next to each other. juxtaposing gleb's militaristic anthem with dmitry's free spirited and spontaneous i-want song... they're both singing about their fathers and living up to their legacy, but while gleb feels trapped by his, dmitry takes the lessons for what they are and still chooses to make his own place in this world. and anya sings a verse in both songs, one not so much by choice, and another because it's an invitation to participate and be acknowledged as a figure in his story.
even the scenes leading up to their respective songs parallel one another. anya is in danger, in one scene she is alone and another she has an ally. both men are trying to convince her to trust them; she trusts one of them. both scenes result in either physical violence or the threat of something worse. anya has agency in one scene all the way through. in the other scene, she does not.
#anastasia broadway#anastasia musical#anastasia#dimya#sort of ahslkjdf#i could go on and on about anya's response in both scenes too#like even just her body language alone speaks a thousand words#but that is a different post#and this was supposed to be more about gleb and dmitry specifically ahldsjkf#dmitry and gleb are foils i said what i said!!!!!!

romanized lyrics are often available for japanese songs i want to sing, but 'accurate' word boundaries trip me up in practice. so i transcribe lyrics in modified roumaji myself to reflect how a singer actually sings them.
in a sense, singing in japanese is an awful lot like rapping. japanese is a rhythmic language; extending the length of vowels or doubling consonants can entirely change the meanings of words.* and singers devoice vowels (or sing out vowels that are normally not voiced) in places i can't always anticipate, too. each line has a rhythm and not getting these things right throws off the beat...
by the time he reaches the bridge in the song i'm currently working through, the singer here is practically beatboxing his lyrics. the percussive effect of his voice set against his drum and bass track is impossible to capture in roumaji, but i've arranged the word boundaries to make enough sense for me to match his tempo:
*which likely explains why japanese vocalists tend not to employ vocal runs; melisma would change rhythmic timing. i want to ensure i'm not doing that when i cover songs.

I'm probably yelling into the void, but anyway. I have been slightly obsessed with Les Mis for a little over a year, and I was reading it in my native language (Estonian). Obviously, I had read before how Grantaire "admired, loved, and venerated Enjolras," but you know how things are more personal in your native language?
English is my 2nd/3rd language, so I didn't know what "venerated" meant at first, I googled it and got my answer, but oh boy, it's something else to read "Grantaire imetles, armastas ja jumaldas teda." Obliviously, the word "love" is more powerful because "love" in English has somehow become just a word, so reading "armastas" on its own was a wow. But reading a word that means worship? As in, Grantaired worshiped Enjolras as if he were a God? That's something else. Like "jumaldama" comes from the word "jumal," which means God.
Was it probably translated like that because there simply isn't a better word in Estonian? Probably. But I do have to go and scream into my pillow now
#les miserables#les mis#grantaire#enjolras#enjoltaire#my favourite pastime is looking for differences in translations#Especially turning the musical because then the words had to rhyme as well and fit in the music#the idea was always the same but the sayings used were almost always just a little bit different to fit the language and culture

With playlists I create and don't keep private because I like to share them around, I always try and keep the songs in the English realm. Max I stretch it into French, especially when it comes to my Good Omen's Playlists because the fact that both Crowley and Aziraphale (the angel tries, cmon) know French helps me make sense of it, sometimes I dare some Italian
However
I keep both European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese songs at bay cause, sure, people fuck with English and French, even Italian, but Portuguese? We live in our little world, our songs aren't mainstream
But
There's this Brazillian song that has been stuck in my head for weeks and every time I listen to it I can only picture Crowley post season 2 getting absolutely smashed while listening to it
As an exception, I added it to the Crowley & Aziraphale Playlist because...They know every language in the world, yeah? Brazillian Portuguese counts, surely?
(Sneaky lil link to the playlist wink wink)
You guys need to listen to it. Very Brazilian, surely not everyone's cup of tea, but, fucking hell-
I didn't find any good translation to english of the song (which is a shame, really. It's a lovely little song. IDK about internationally, but European Portuguese people tend to look down on Brazillian songs for some stupid ass reason, but, fucking hell, this fucking song-) so I put my professional skills as a translator into good use because I need you guys to see my vision
I'm gonna leave the video linked here and put the translation below if you want to check it.
Just
Cmon
So fucking Crowley coded - if you nevermind the whole farmland undertones because, cmon. It's Brazillian folk. What did you expect? Just feel the vibe, for real
youtube
Translation below by yours truly. If you catch a mistake, don't tell the people that actually pay me to translate shit, 'kay? I need to pay my bills
Our Picture - Ana Castela
Everybody has a love that when they lay down and look up at the ceiling
They wonder: If it was today, would we work out?
An episode that will never air, an unfinished album
A story that was interrupted in the middle, you can only imagine the rest
It's this longing that takes, that takes
That takes over me
And it doesn't make me feel remorse, nor anger
Nor hatred, only makes me feel sorry for the end
Now that picture of us getting married at the church
It won't be hung up, it only exists in my head
The two of us looking after the cattle, the cowboy daughter
Our life on the countryside only exists in my head
It will still be love even if it doesn't last our whole lives
It will still be love even if it doesn't last our whole lives
There are things that even if we want to, we can't forget
The end of 2017
Me starting dentistry and you working as a vet
Your denim shirt in my truck
My friends ask what happened to you
My father doesn't give up, he still wants to be a grandpa
Time wasn't so nice with the both of us
It could have been, but it wasn't
Now that picture of us getting married at the church
It won't be hung up, it only exists in my head
The two of us looking after the cattle, the cowboy daughter
Our life on the countryside only exists in my head
It will still be love even if it doesn't last our whole lives
It will still be love even if it doesn't last our whole lives

ive never gone to see an opera live in europe let alone one outside of a major theater that regularly records and broadcasts their productions so grain of salt etc but i think there's some kind of distinct cultural difference between how european companies do "reimagined" productions of operas vs how american companies do it
#sasha speaks#especially thinking about the number of 'canonical' operas that are recently getting adaptations over here#frequently into english language musicals/operettas#not like rent and miss saigon though i mean more like matchbox magic flute#and la périchole getting adapted as songbird by glimmerglass and wno#or the local company that's putting on a 'circus' version of rigoletto with a new english libretto here in dec#(not sure what that will entail yet but i'm intrigued to find out)#hell even the upcoming pirates of penzance revival on bway which is also weirdly enough getting the jazz age new orleans makeover#ik pirates and bway is a different story from Opera(tm) Proper but still. tangential#anyway don't expect much more elaboration tonight i'm in bed rn as i type.#plus i'd want some actual researched data to back up my claim here if i were to really go on#and i have enough school related research to be prioritizing rn as it is#anyway#oh also smth about what content does and does not appeal to american vs european audiences#and by extension what you can and cannot get away with depicting onstage#(for a recent example consider sancta susanna vs grounded)#(okay anyway gn for real this time)
