Music in various languages
I've talked about how interacting with different cultures is good, I figure I'll also try to recommend some songs. (many songs beneath the cut). I'm going to include a couple different genres, but obviously I won't be including every.
I hit audio limit :/
Norwegian language (Norway):
[Pt: Du må ikke sove by klarspråk]. [album: du må ikke sove. shows a warped photo of Donald Trump on tv.] genre: rock / (punk?) / spoken word / social criticism. it's an antifascist song, quoting a famous illegal WWII poem by the same title "you mustn't sleep".
[PT: regn & gitar by Jomas] [album: evig kronisk. shows man looking at a garden holding a retro phone.] It's a more soft quiet song about waiting for someone in the rain.
(I could recommend many more Norwegian songs so don't feel afraid to ask if you're at all interested)
Sámi language (Norway / Sweden / Finland / Russia):
I don't have the necessary letters on my keyboard to write PT. But this is a Inari Sami song by Amoc. I don't speak that language. here are the lyrics on genius. here's a dictionary, not sure if it's the right Sámi language. The genre is like atmospheric rock or something, the instruments are amazing.
[PT: áddjá by resirkulert] [album cover: áddjá] translation: grandfather (Sámi) by recycled (Norwegian). genre: yoik/joik - a Sami Music genre which is mostly about vocal technique.
French language (France / Benin / Congo / Democratic republic of Congo / Monaco / Senegal / Switzerland / Belgium / Ivory coast ++)
[PT: Soleil noir by 47ter] [album: petit princes. Photo of three boys on stairs]. A rap song by a trio from France. It's about "a black sun" about liking the dark and rain and not liking summer.
[PT: Déprime hostile by Pogo crash control]. [album: Déprime hostile. Shows a digital drawing of a head cut open with a cocktail]. genre: punk / metal. The band is from France. The song is about hostile depression or something.
[PT: plus rien ne m'étonne by Tiken Jah Fakoly]. [album: coup de guele. It shows a face pointed towards the ceiling]. The artist is from Ivory coast (AKA côte d'ivoire). genre: Reggae. It's about colonialism.
[PT: formidable by stromae]. [album: racine carée. it shows the side of a man's face, he has short hair]. The artist is Belgian. Genre: hip hop. The song is about a breakup or something.
Scots Gaelic (UK: Scotland)
[PT: Faileas air an airidh by Runrig]. [album: 50 great songs]. genre: traditional folk. The song is about waking up on a ship or something.
German language (Germany / Belgium / Austria / Switzerland)
[PT: 99 Luftballons by Nena]. [album: Nena]. Genre: synth pop / pop rock. This is an antiwar song from 1983 about the cold war.
A last song even though I hit Audio limit:
Kunst by Lebanon Hanover. (link). It is a gothic rock song about art.

As much as I adore conlangs, I really like how the Imperial Radch books handle language. The book is entirely in English but you're constantly aware that you're reading a "translation," both of the Radchaai language Breq speaks as default, and also the various other languages she encounters. We don't hear the words but we hear her fretting about terms of address (the beloathed gendering on Nilt) and concepts that do or don't translate (Awn switching out of Radchaai when she needs a language where "citizen," "civilized," and "Radchaai person" aren't all the same word) and noting people's registers and accents. The snatches of lyrics we hear don't scan or rhyme--even, and this is what sells it to me, the real-world songs with English lyrics, which get the same "literal translation" style as everything else--because we aren't hearing the actual words, we're hearing Breq's understanding of what they mean. I think it's a cool way to acknowledge linguistic complexity and some of the difficulties of multilingual/multicultural communication, which of course becomes a larger theme when we get to the plot with the Presgar Translators.
#imperial radch#also a great example of the 'you don't have to be Tolkien' phenomenon#if you want to think about linguistic differences by building all the languages in your setting#and being able to explain what those differences are through actual texts in the language in question#that's AWESOME#but it's not the only way to do it#it's also interesting because of course this style only works in book form#everyone's speaking different languages but in a written account they're all 'translated' for you#but of course if it was a TV series they would all have to be speaking a language the audience understands#(or you *would* have to go wild with conlangs)#and i think that's really cool as well--#how for a series where song is so central we don't actually hear any of the actual in-universe words or any of the music#it's all been filtered#and again you know this is happening but seeing the examples of how real songs--the shape hymns and 'L'homme Arme'--are presented#makes you a lot more viscerally aware of how limited your perspective is#it's good#ann leckie i love you

it's crazy how the neva flows and my petersburg happen right next to each other. juxtaposing gleb's militaristic anthem with dmitry's free spirited and spontaneous i-want song... they're both singing about their fathers and living up to their legacy, but while gleb feels trapped by his, dmitry takes the lessons for what they are and still chooses to make his own place in this world. and anya sings a verse in both songs, one not so much by choice, and another because it's an invitation to participate and be acknowledged as a figure in his story.
even the scenes leading up to their respective songs parallel one another. anya is in danger, in one scene she is alone and another she has an ally. both men are trying to convince her to trust them; she trusts one of them. both scenes result in either physical violence or the threat of something worse. anya has agency in one scene all the way through. in the other scene, she does not.
#anastasia broadway#anastasia musical#anastasia#dimya#sort of ahslkjdf#i could go on and on about anya's response in both scenes too#like even just her body language alone speaks a thousand words#but that is a different post#and this was supposed to be more about gleb and dmitry specifically ahldsjkf#dmitry and gleb are foils i said what i said!!!!!!

Not a question, but more of a confession and I was wondering if someone else is in the same boat as me. I feel like I'm the only Käärijä fan where I live right now (outside of europe) and I feel like a weirdo whenever I try to get people into his music. I always get the whole ''but you don't even speak finnish, why do you listen to this ? etc.'' End of rant, have a great day
Hey Anon thanks for dropping this in my askbox 😊
First off, the whole "why listen to X artist if you don't speak X language" thing feels pretty outdated.
When it comes to music, it's not always about understanding every single word, it's about feeling it. That's exactly what Käärijä has accomplished with his music. Despite the language barrier, he has thousands of fans outside Finland who listen, enjoy and even sing along, regardless of not speaking Finnish. I think that's one of the most beautiful things—an artist gaining worldwide popularity singing in their own language and still reaching new fans every day.
We might not fully understand what Käärijä sings about, the meanings behind his lyrics, all the cultural references, or the nuances in between the lines, but we still listen to his music, enjoy it, dance to it and sing along at concerts. And that's the beauty of music—it's something you can appreciate and connect with even without fully understanding every word.
This said, people who think it's weird to enjoy music in a language you don't understand could stand to open their minds a bit and avoid quick judgments. So what if you're listening to a song in a language you don't speak? Is there anything wrong with that? Absolutely not!
Life's too short to worry about what others think, and if they don't want to give Käärijä a fair shot without judging, they're the ones missing out on some great bangers 🔥
#ask#i've also had to deal with people asking me why i listen to music in x language if i don't understand what it says#it really makes you feel like you're the odd one out#but don't pay attention to them and do whatever you want in life as long as you're not hurting anyone#i wish people wouldn't be so quick to judge and that they'd give you the chance to show them something new and different#käärijä

I'm probably yelling into the void, but anyway. I have been slightly obsessed with Les Mis for a little over a year, and I was reading it in my native language (Estonian). Obviously, I had read before how Grantaire "admired, loved, and venerated Enjolras," but you know how things are more personal in your native language?
English is my 2nd/3rd language, so I didn't know what "venerated" meant at first, I googled it and got my answer, but oh boy, it's something else to read "Grantaire imetles, armastas ja jumaldas teda." Obliviously, the word "love" is more powerful because "love" in English has somehow become just a word, so reading "armastas" on its own was a wow. But reading a word that means worship? As in, Grantaired worshiped Enjolras as if he were a God? That's something else. Like "jumaldama" comes from the word "jumal," which means God.
Was it probably translated like that because there simply isn't a better word in Estonian? Probably. But I do have to go and scream into my pillow now
#les miserables#les mis#grantaire#enjolras#enjoltaire#my favourite pastime is looking for differences in translations#Especially turning the musical because then the words had to rhyme as well and fit in the music#the idea was always the same but the sayings used were almost always just a little bit different to fit the language and culture

With playlists I create and don't keep private because I like to share them around, I always try and keep the songs in the English realm. Max I stretch it into French, especially when it comes to my Good Omen's Playlists because the fact that both Crowley and Aziraphale (the angel tries, cmon) know French helps me make sense of it, sometimes I dare some Italian
However
I keep both European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese songs at bay cause, sure, people fuck with English and French, even Italian, but Portuguese? We live in our little world, our songs aren't mainstream
But
There's this Brazillian song that has been stuck in my head for weeks and every time I listen to it I can only picture Crowley post season 2 getting absolutely smashed while listening to it
As an exception, I added it to the Crowley & Aziraphale Playlist because...They know every language in the world, yeah? Brazillian Portuguese counts, surely?
(Sneaky lil link to the playlist wink wink)
You guys need to listen to it. Very Brazilian, surely not everyone's cup of tea, but, fucking hell-
I didn't find any good translation to english of the song (which is a shame, really. It's a lovely little song. IDK about internationally, but European Portuguese people tend to look down on Brazillian songs for some stupid ass reason, but, fucking hell, this fucking song-) so I put my professional skills as a translator into good use because I need you guys to see my vision
I'm gonna leave the video linked here and put the translation below if you want to check it.
Just
Cmon
So fucking Crowley coded - if you nevermind the whole farmland undertones because, cmon. It's Brazillian folk. What did you expect? Just feel the vibe, for real
youtube
Translation below by yours truly. If you catch a mistake, don't tell the people that actually pay me to translate shit, 'kay? I need to pay my bills
Our Picture - Ana Castela
Everybody has a love that when they lay down and look up at the ceiling
They wonder: If it was today, would we work out?
An episode that will never air, an unfinished album
A story that was interrupted in the middle, you can only imagine the rest
It's this longing that takes, that takes
That takes over me
And it doesn't make me feel remorse, nor anger
Nor hatred, only makes me feel sorry for the end
Now that picture of us getting married at the church
It won't be hung up, it only exists in my head
The two of us looking after the cattle, the cowboy daughter
Our life on the countryside only exists in my head
It will still be love even if it doesn't last our whole lives
It will still be love even if it doesn't last our whole lives
There are things that even if we want to, we can't forget
The end of 2017
Me starting dentistry and you working as a vet
Your denim shirt in my truck
My friends ask what happened to you
My father doesn't give up, he still wants to be a grandpa
Time wasn't so nice with the both of us
It could have been, but it wasn't
Now that picture of us getting married at the church
It won't be hung up, it only exists in my head
The two of us looking after the cattle, the cowboy daughter
Our life on the countryside only exists in my head
It will still be love even if it doesn't last our whole lives
It will still be love even if it doesn't last our whole lives

It's fucking weird how rude people are about immigration sometimes. And I don't just mean bigots being biased and stuff. I mean that, on a REGULAR basis, people ask me if I'm thinking about "going back to the US". And I'm just like... no? What do you mean "back to the US"? I live in Germany. I LIVE IN GERMANY.
I literally fucking started learning German and obsessing on German culture in high school, then I went to college in the US and majored in German Studies, including two study-abroad programs in Germany, then I moved to Germany for grad school and lived there for three years and worked in various German-speaking jobs while studying, then I had to temporarily return to the US but found a German-translation-based job at the US branch of a German company, and made a bunch of German or at least German-speaking friends in my new US city, and then a few years later I was able to move back to Germany, where I got a work visa sponsored by my employer and a full-time salaried job, and after a few more years I acquired my permanent residency, and soon I'll be applying for citizenship.
And people still sometimes ask me whether I'm considering "going back to the US". Like... dude? Would you ask a Mexican living in the US about their plans for "going back to Mexico"? That is rude as fuck.
Immigration is fucking hard. Why on earth would I have gone through all this shit just to throw it up in the air like "Oh well, never mind!"
#i'm sorry but this honestly makes me rage#why do so many people take my commitment to this country and culture so unseriously?#i have learned the language#i have worked here in the same full-time job for six years now#ffs my number-one most played musical artist on last.fm of ALL TIME is a german-language band#(four of my top ten most-played artists are german-language musicians for that matter)#is it because i'm white and upper-middle-class#so i come across as one of those irritating globe-hopping laptop-working culturally oblivious 'expat' types?#I AM NOT A FUCKING EXPAT#I AM AN IMMIGRANT#i have moved to a different country and i am not very financially well off and i am humbly grateful to live here#and i have learned the damn language (yes that's worth repeating) and am not interested in jumping from brazil to thailand to spain to etc.#cosmo gyres#tag rant#grump grump#god this shit drives me up the wall

ok i do need to ask, do we like KNOW know that some egg admins have been playing as other silly npcs during this downtime or are we speculating. like i've seen people identifying admins with varying strength of basis since the eggs first existed but like. for a while there anytime an npc spoke portuguese everyone thought it was richas and then occasionally it would be agent 18 lmao so. . . are we doing that now or do we like Know lmfao
oh and to be clear i do mean varying strength; people were apparently spotting a leo admin's speech patterns earlier and since leo has such a distinct pattern (tho i'm not fluent in spanish LMAO) i'm inclined to believe that. but yea for a while people seemed to think portuguese=richas and to be fair there weren't many non-english npcs for a WHILE and really no portuguese besides richas (that we knew of) but it does mean i'm a bit more skeptical now when the audience starts trying to clock npc admins lmfao
#qsmp#this is not neg this is just me not being on y'all's same wavelength for the millionth time#sometimes i feel like i'm not cut out to be in a minecraft fandom lmfao#which is wild bc i started my fandom journey as one. maybe that's why lmao mcyt fan spaces are way different than 2012#anyway i'm apparently super bad with minecraft admin body language bc i never spot it#philza minecraft spotting his kids were Imposters from a mile away blew my fucking mind#bonus shoutout to etoiles who clocked dapper as a code fighting him#and who also had to clock his imposter daughter lol rip the legend#shut up vic#block game brainrot#oh and when phil clocked that bobby was filling in for tallulah tho that one was kinda obvious (lag)#i'm pretty sure fit has also clocked an admin filling in for ramon but i don't remember when or who#definitely pre-purgatory though#ah and when the eggs were missing and pierre clocked pomme and then used her ninho pearl lmao#while she was snipybara#that time roier laid on the ground and played sad music when a different admin filled in for bobby#and ofc cellbit noticing elisangela(iirc) was richas and teasing them#me when the parents can spot their kids a mile away: 🥰

can argue to death with me about how age restrictions on youtube are necessary but i will be DAMNED before i say Hinds Hall deserved to be age restricted. average american child on youtube can listen to H*rbu D*rbu (censoring in hopes to avoid algorithm engagement with the song) which is IOF praising genocidal propaganda, and- big fucking shocker- its not age restricted. i’m 100% sure the only reason Hind’s Hall was restricted was to deliberately suppress and avoid the spread of the song.
#tauto talks#i know damn well that it doesn’t matter that it’s songs in different languages shit in arabic is not free from age restrictions just because#it would not take a kid much leg work for someone to find an english translation if they wanted it#pop culture has an inseparable impact on the public perception of so fucking much and it sucks to say but i bet some people hadn’t had#everything delivered in a way that made them care#macklemore has a weird history of social activism in his music i apologize every day for making fun of him in highschool for thrift shop#like his song kevin does a lot to tackle americas overprescription to addiction to jail or death pipeline#it is sympathetic to the experience of an addict in ways a lot of people generally in society are not#this song did a bit to turn perspective to industries at fault and not the individual suffering#so watching hinds hall be age restricted? feels deliberate. as every move of suppression has felt#feeling particularly full of grief and hate today because i graduate soon#i can only think of every writer like me who did not get to see the stage like i will and it aches#stories the world will never see because it removed the chance#it’s almost like the youth of america are some of the most vibrant and opinionated and energetic parts of the population. youth affords time#change spreading like wildfire cannot be put out as fast as it grows#keep burning#free palestine#palestine#gaza genocide#free gaza#eyes on rafah#eyes on sudan#eyes on congo#eyes on darfur#liberate the world#hoping a swift but painful death to colonization

I loove the android robin au it's really one of the most interesting au I have seen in a while.
I am always happy to see new post abt it
Also making my favourite characters go through hell and then receiving comfort from their people is like the best thing ever for me so every time I see a whump!Robin post I like automatically
People loving android!Robin makes me so happy anansnssndsnsns she's curious and excitable and full of wonder and the world keeps punishing her for simply being alive. Sometimes it's too painful even for me, big whump lover 😭😭 though seriously, there is not enough Robin whump, and while all the characters in the show are very whumpeable, hurting my little blorbo Robin feels special because... she's just so deeply lonely. She's lonely and she thinks she deserves to be because of something wrong with her (pulling this interpretation from Surviving Hawkins lore which is canon to me 😭). That was a big idea I had when I first came up with android!Robin... that there is something wrong with her. Broken. In this AU she's literally broken in a lot of way (battery and memory problems, weak joints in her lower half, etc), but that's all within the range of normal robot problems. The real issue with her is that she's sentient. It terrifies people because it really brings out the existencial horror of... well, existing. It terrifies Robin most of all. She is the problem. She is what's wrong with her. She shouldn't exist.
But at the same time, she loves being alive so much! She doesn't understand it and doesn't know how it happened, but it happened, and now she's real and wants to experience life and the world and know people like human beings do. So it's her constant battle to become human despite humans having hurt her so much in the past... only for Nancy to already see her as human. Just one made of metal and plastic, but human nonetheless. She's the first person to see her that way and maybe everyone else thinks she's crazy, but Nancy is used to that. She's so sure of this, though, of Robin's self-awareness. She trusts her so blindly. She doesn't even need proof. And not only does she believe her, but she defends her humanity in front of her friends and family so ardently, fighting so hard for Robin to be aknowledged by everyone else as human. Fighting so hard to give her a home and family for the first time in her life.
Nancy has it bad for Robin, really. She's just so in love, even if everyone else thinks she's crazy for falling in love with a machine (no one thinks she is, though, because they all know Robin, and once you know Robin, it's impossible not to love her).
#ronance#android!Robin AU#robin buckley#😭😭 every day im emotional about her at 4 am#ok nice things now:#nancy takes her shopping for the first time! because robin never quite developed her own style#and being a girly girl to Nancy clothes are such a big part of your identity#robin finds these cool chains peoole wear as necklaces and bracelets and all these rings and she loves how they all look on her#and this jacket with different patches on it... she never thought she'd be the kind of girl to like shopping but she's so excited#because its the first time she's choosing what clothes to wear#Nancy introduces her to many different kinds of music alongside Steve#and then eventually the whole gang joins them. everyone gets to suggest one artist and soon Robin has this long asf playlist#to listen to so she can figure out what she likes#same with movies - they all now have weekly movie nights so they can show Robin different films#robin slowly discovering her passions... she reads a lot and finds out she loves languages and literature#and she decides she wants to get into college to study something related to it#she also decides she wants to travel through Europe and wants to bring Nancy with her#she decorates her room with movie and music posters#she decides she really likes cyndi lauper#she tries to learn how to dance with youtube tutorials#dragging Nancy into it#she gets to watch a lot of movies at her job at the movie theater#and she makes friends with her coworkers there#she's not fully and truly becoming a person#she has never been this happy#my posts#thank you for your ask i love talking about android!robin

learning languages is fun because you'll come across a new word that doesn't really translate that succinctly into your first language and when you get an idea of the meaning it's like :O
#i just learned about the french word “rythmer”#it can literally mean to give rhythm or tempo to music#but it also has the figurative meaning of like. forming the pattern of something?#like. you could say “les vacances chez sa grande-mère ont rythmé son enfance”#which means like. “holidays at [their] grandmother's formed the pattern or rythm of [their] childhood” which!! is really cool to me!!#this is actually making me very happy#i can't really explain Why. i just love learning about how different languages come up with unique ways to communicate things#“learning languages is hard” yeah ik. but it can still be fun sometimes.#also. if anyone comes at me being like “you can never REALLY translate something succinctly because languages are never equivalent-”#i know. lmao.
