Why Chara Undertale is a Muse of Time

From the dawn of 2009, it has been the Homestuck's duty to assign characters from different media a title from their RPG-inspired typology system. Although it is full of holes, has little cannon info, and can be interpreted in so many ways it is honestly pointless to argue about which character is which Classpect, it is my duty as not only a Homestuck, but as a Tumblr blogger to assert that my interpretation is right and that everyone else is wrong.

So here is why Chara is so obviously a Muse of Time, it is actually atextual to suggest any other classpect.

First of all, Toby Fox is a Homestuck fan. He read the comic, he wrote a comic, and he made music for the comic. Therefore, it is not unthinkable that we can look to Chara's design, and dialogue, for clues for their classpect.

Chara was inspired by the Cherubs. The red cheeks, their Al-like speech patterns, their green shirt, their focus on absolutes, the way they were briefly a part of an entity that fought with itself, they have a sibling relationship with someone who is very much their opposite (at least at the time,) it is all very much Cherub inspired. This will be important later.

Secondly, let's look at their ideology. Aspect is the themes that follow you, which informs how you see the world. Chara is very much focused on power. They want all of it they can have. They define themselves by it, and the chase for it. They are noted to be very efficient and particular in how they pour their water, and it is not a stretch to say they keep these traits are probably a key part of their personality. Additionally, they are surrounded by death. They die, cause the death of another, and are only encountered in the route where you kill everyone. You only see them in sepia-toned flashbacks of the past otherwise, or if you believe in the NarraChara theory, narrating the present, using their words to define how we experience Undertale in the moment. Yeah, this is a Time-bound character no doubt.

Thirdly, let's talk about their role in the story. This is what defines their class, and is the tricker part of classpecting. Chara is defined by absence. The fact that their name is actually their name, not Frisk's, is the twist at one of the ends of the game. They are only vaguely alluded to by those that know them, and they don't have a voice bite. We only encounter them in a route where they are pushed so far we don't know if their personality is what we see, and it's at the end of the hardest route too. It would be easier to say Chara is a complete non-character, except...they are the reason the game happens. Their choices indirectly lead to Asgore causing the war, which directly impacts every character in the game. They impact Asriel so much that he is only saved when reminded of them. In fact, much of Asriels/Flowey's actions are defined by Chara's impact on them, and Undertale as a story would have to be completely rewritten without them. Hell, if you believe in NarraChara, they are the narrator. Imagine playing Undertale without the iconic narration! This is all a dead ringer for the Muse class. They are the indirect, most passive, almost absent character that ends up impacting absolutely everything.

Chara is a Muse of Time, baby.

(Oh, and about that cherub stuff? The only two Classpects of the Cherubs we know are the Lord of Time and the Muse of Space. The Lord has iconic red cheeks, and the Muse becomes the Narrator in half of the epilogues. Checkmate, atheists!)

My reasoning below is below but im curious what ppl would choose instead for god tiers

-Thief of Heart: The one who takes or steals with feelings, and passion for their own advancement.

Utena did steal Anthy from the rest of the student council and eventually from Akio, but in a way that was mostly benefitting herself even if her motives were good.

-Muse of Time: The one who inspires and is controlled by fate, and decay for the advancement of others.

Anthy is a muse because shes the epicenter of the revolution. She is so used to the continued failed attempts from Akio but still inspires Utena to try still.

I wont be drawing it but Akio would just be a witch of blood compared to Anthy being a master class

THE MUSE-SEER OF BLOOD-TIME

The Lord-Muse of Hope-Void is someone who wants to make a better future for themself and for others, but they don’t exactly know where to start or what to do, so they unfortunately remain stagnant for a long period of time before they decide or alternatively, have their mind made for them by someone else. The Lord-Muse of Hope-Void is at a conflict with themself because they don’t know how they want to go about pursuing their dreams, if they even do at all, and whether they want to take a more active or passive route of getting to what they want, if they even put in the effort at all.

The Lord-Muse of Hope-Void can control and manipulate the secrets and the information, as well as the Hopes and the desires of those around them, or they can subtly influence people into building the future that the Lord-Muse wants instead, but they probably cannot have both and cannot walk the very thin line between the two worlds of power so they must eventually make a choice before it’s too late. The Lord-Muse of Hope-Void is held back by standards or barriers that they had once set up to protect themself from the dangers of the world, but ironically it is keeping them too safe and they cannot experience the world and all of the things it offers, both good and bad, from within their safety shield and if they ever want to grow as a person, to get stronger and get wiser, they will need to leave their comfort zone and come to terms with what they need to do and the world that they had been hiding from. 

The Lord-Muse of Hope-Void is part Lord of Hope, which means that they are powerful beyond belief and that their words hold too much power, they can sway a person’s thoughts and Hopes with a sincere speech, and they can choose to twist and manipulate a person’s understanding or desires to get what they want when they want. They are dangerous, but not all powerful, and their one true weakness is a complete lack of Hope for them to manipulate and use to their own benefit.

The Lord-Muse of Hope-Void is part Lord of Void, which means that they are the one who controls the world from the shadow, they are the one who makes decisions for everyone else and determines who knows what and who doesn’t have power, and they are the one who decides who gets to be influential or known and who gets to be forgotten by history. They are in control of who gets to be known and who fades into the shadows, controlling the unknown and the secrets and all the lies of the universe, and if they so felt like it, they could just completely cloud over someone’s life and make them disappear forever.

The Lord-Muse of Hope-Void is part Muse of Hope, which means that they are ambitious and optimistic, they try to bring out the best in those around them, and they want to make sure that everyone is having a good time and that they’re happy and content with their lives. They feed off the power and the happiness of the people around them, drawing energy from the positive emotions and the dreams of their close friends and family, and if they’re not happy or discontent with something, you will know as they will either tell you or immediately jump into action trying to fix it.

The Lord-Muse of Hope-Void is part Muse of Void, which means that they are one with the shadows and the mysteries of the universe, they act as a puppeteer and inspire people to do their bidding, silently controlling people from the shadows via their secrets and insecurities. They are almost like a devil on your shoulder, whispering for you to lie and deceive others just for the fun of it and to spread chaos and misinformation, but it can be hard to resist the allure of the Muse just simply because of their air that surrounds them that seems to draw people in.

He's usually a quieter kid, unless we're talking about writing music. He's a baritone, which no one expects.

Ends up being a conductor and songwriter for Ophira's musical theater group. Everything falls into place, probably because of his classpect.

Symphogear Time!!!!

Tachibana Hibiki: Bard of Void

I knew I would have to limit Hibiki to the Void aspect since she specializes in unarmed combat. This was particularly tricky given her overwhelming association with Light, but luckily there are inversion prone classes to work with.

Bard was an ideal fit for someone whose goal of bringing the world together to a place of mutual understanding is so fundamentally at odds with her skill set as a combatant.

Ultimately, Hibiki is at her strongest when she is at her most passive: not fighting, but beseeching. Reaching out with an open fist to every villain and god she encounters, and in so doing insuring the total destruction of their plans.

The whole "haha she sings the song of the apocalypse because she's a bard" thing was a nice bonus!

Kazanari Tsubasa: Rogue of Blood

Ah, the lush irony of Tsubasa and blood. Despite her constant rejection of the constraints of her bloodline, there is no denying that Tsubasa has internalized the ideals of her family and pursues them with relentless fury. If Blood as an aspect represents the indelible effects that the people around us have on our lives and selves, well. Tsubasa certainly captures the complicated pain and glory of that.

However, the thing that truly makes her a rogue of blood, in my opinion, is the way she interacts with other people's family trauma. Consistently, she has the capacity to take on other people's fear of vulnerability and intimacy, cracking through their walls to allow those deeper bonds to form. Breaking in, but never stealing.

Add to that her association with Breath/Flight/Wings, and Rogue looks even more appealing for its ability to interact with an aspect to the point of its own opposite.

Yukine Chris: Prince of Life

Bang bang big gun go shooty pow boom.

I mean, there are legitimate reasons too, but this one is pretty straight forward. Chris is a very rich character, but uhhhhh. Not a super deep one.

In more serious terms, Chris is very much defined by her relationship to death. She is a killer, yes, but she doesn't want to be. The immense value she places on life, whether her own or others' suggests that she is not a Doom player, but a Life one.

Her willingness to sacrifice her own life to achieve the Biggest Bang also comes to mind. Whether she is using her life as a weapon, or using her weapons to protect lives, she's very much a Weapon of Life. And thus, a Prince of it too.

Maria Cadenzavna Eve: Seer of Hope

I feel like this is another relatively self-evident one. Maria always sees the best in people, even in her abusers. Whether it's the brain maze for the Linker recipe, or pretending to be Finé, Maria always sees the possibility for success.

Where light is the best possible turnout, hope is the impossible made manifest.

Also, her weapon is not designed for direct combat, but rather for redirection of immense amounts of energy. That screams "hopey bullshit" to me, as well as being a more passive style of combat overall.

Akatsuki Kirika: Knight of Mind

Okay, so, the underlying logic here basically comes down to "beep boop this bitch gay." Can you believe they legit named her 'eclipsed sunlight reflecting off the moon'? I love how obnoxious the names in this show are.

That in mind, why not heart? I actually waffled on this one a lot. Heart seems so obvious for the genki girl desperately in love with the moon. Right? But...

The thing is,

Tsukuyomi Shirabe: Maid of Heart

Girl has 0 impulse control. I almost said 0 chill but that's not true. If anything she has too much chill. She is so unhingedly chill about following all her most insane and self-destructive impulses. Every heart player ever does this, whether it's Dirk's beheading or Nepeta confronting Gamzee.

Bonus: Fraymotif (Light and Heart): Total Eclipse. If you're thinking this has IMMENSE deja vu, it's because I've definitely covered this before, here.

Anyway, imagine a cool fun total eclipse of the heart reference here

More personalized than Collective Effervescence, Total Eclipse is a pretty simple 1-to-1 translation of Kirika and Shirabe's various duet superpowers. I imagine it would functionally involve Kirika identifying strategic decision their enemy could make in her own and Shirabe's favour, and Shirabe forces the enemy into an emotional state conducive to making those bad choices. Like I said, it's basically 1-to-1 with how their duets function.

Kohinata Miku: Lord of Space

I have not watched Season 5, but if Miku doesn't get back her Symphogear by the end of it, I will be BURNING SOCIETY TO THE GROUND.

Anyway, as the Great Unmaker whose power was so immense that she unmade the concept of Original Sin, I think we can go ahead and give her a master title.

And when it comes to "able to destroy anything, anywhere, right down to the very concept of it" well. That's gotta be space.

Elfnein: Muse of Time.

This one was so easy that I kind of feel like it must be wrong. Too easy!

But I mean, she's literally the most passive person in the show, whose primary skill set is in giving other people enough time. That's muse of time behaviours!!

ETA: I've now watched enough of S5 to get to That Part now, and I'm more sure than ever. Even in the moment of utmost need, Elfnein's special ability is to summon previously killed allies for a cameo fight. I cannot think of anything more "too passive to live, too powerful to die."

Little Stan getting manipulated by Bill has excellent angst potential but consider.

Stanley just, keeps tricking Bill. Because Bill would definitely massively underestimate Stanley and how far he’ll go to protect Ford (like in the actual show). We also know Stanley has the street smarts between the twins and could absolutely tell Bill is full of it.
