Just for fun...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a weird Noble Savage idealism which verges on a fetish, a perception that primitive peoples were all peaceful and harmonious... until European people came along.
But it isn't true. Look at your likelihood of dying a violent death in tribal societies.
https://quadrant.org.au/opinion/bennelong-papers/2013/05/the-long-bloody-history-of-aboriginal-violence/
The long history of Aboriginal violence — Part II
TRIBAL warfare and paybacks were endemic. In "Journey to Horseshoe Bend", anthropologist T.G.H. Strehlow described a black-on-black massacre in 1875 in the Finke River area of Central Australia, triggered by a perceived sacrilege:
"The warriors turned their murderous attention to the women and older children and either clubbed or speared them to death. Finally, according to the grim custom of warriors and avengers they broke the limbs of the infants, leaving them to die ‘natural deaths’. The final number of the dead could well have reached the high figure of 80 to 100 men, women and children."
Revenge killings by the victims’ clan involved more than 60 people, with the two exchanges accounting for about 20% of members of the two clans. (When Pauline Hanson, then member for Oxley, quoted this account in 1996, an Aboriginal woman elder replied, "Mrs Hanson should receive a traditional Urgarapul punishment: having her hands and feet crippled.")
Escaped convict William Buckley, who lived for three decades with tribes around Port Phillip, recounted constant raids, ambushes, and small battles, typically involving one to three fatalities. He noted the Watouronga of Geelong in night raids ‘destroyed without mercy men, women and children.’
Historian Geoff Blainey concluded that annual death rates from North-East Arnhem Land and Port Philip, were comparable with countries involved in the two world wars, although Blainey’s estimate could be somewhat on the high side.
Other black-on-black massacres include accounts from anthropologist Bill Stanner of an entire camp massacre, an Aurukun massacre in the early 20th century, Strehlow’s account of the wiping out of the Plenty River local group of Udebatara in Central Australia, and the killing of a large group of men, women and children near Mt Eba, also in Central Australia.
Strehlow’s wife Kathleen Strehlow wrote:
“It would be no exaggeration to say that the system worked as one of sheer terror in the days before the white man came. This terror was instilled from earliest childhood and continued unabated through life until the extremity of old age seemed to guarantee some immunity from the attentions of blood avenger or sorcerer alike for wrongs real or imaginary…children were not exempted from capital punishment for persistent offences against the old tribal code.”
The Murngin (now Yolngu) in NE Arnhem Land during 1920s practiced a deadly warfare that placed it among the world’s most lethal societies. The then-rate for homicides of 330 per 100,000 (which Jarrett suggests could be grossly under-estimated) was 15 times the 2006-07 "very remote national Indigenous rate" of 22, and 300 times the 2006-7 national non-Indigenous rate. That Murngin rate was worse than in Mexico’s present Ciudad Juarez drug capital (300 homicides per 100,000), and more than three times worse than the worst national current rate (Honduras).
And they didn't even have to kill.
http://hawaii-guide.info/past.and.present/history/tahitian.takeover/
Hawaii Tahitian Takeover
Around 1000 A.D., Tahitians from the islands of Ra’iatea, Bora Bora, and Huahine arrived in Hawaii. With their larger statures, they easily overpowered the islands’ inhabitants, descendants of Polynesian settlers that had arrived several hundred years prior.
Although the Tahitians didn’t slaughter the natives, they reduced them to commoners, calling them menehune (an insult meaning “people of small status”) and imposed their own political system and customs on them.
The people who are purported to be Hawaii's "indigenous" or "first nations" or "first peoples" aren't. They're invaders, colonizers and occupiers who arrived second, subjugated the people who were already there and made them second-class citizens.

mmmm buck is the naive young hero who's full of heart and thinks a little bit too much with his muscles sometimes who was separated from his family in mt olympus (maybe maddie is the one waiting for him?? bc the buckleys suck lol) while bobby is the retired, jaded trainer who's lost everything and has no intention of trying to build a life for himself again until buck shows up on his doorstep asking him to teach him how to be a hero. eddie is the sassy, sarcastic meg character who is surprisingly charmed by buck's earnest advances and who secretly sold his soul (to protect chris maybe????) hen, chimney, ravi and lucy are the muses. annnnd idk who would be hades in this instance but, y'know what amy?? i see the vision!!!

Kinda curious about all your WIPs but I need to know either about The Less I know The Better or kdfjfkjfksjfdksj ahah
theres too many wips if im being honest JDJDDJ but okay so
kdfjkjkkdksk or whatever is a s2 steddie au where Steve saves Eddie from a demodog and thus has to explain to him about the upside down and all that jazz. here’s a little snippet:
Steve lifted the bat, swung, and let it connect with a sickening crunch. He was in the forest, near Hawkins National Lab. It was dark. There were a few spare chittering sounds around him. The same chittering, that had in fact dragged him into the forest in the first place. The chittering sound he couldn’t push out of his head. The sound that haunted his nightmares. The Demogorgon. Except it wasn’t. This was different. The sound had pulled him into the woods, wanting to follow it before any of the kids got involved.
and then The Less I Know the Better is a s3 steddie au where Eddie, friends with band class Robin Buckley, goes to support said friend at Scoops when he meets Steve Harrington and they spend the few weeks before the “incident” becoming closer and closer and falling a little in love or whatever it is teenagers do these days 🙄 and then the russian torture happens and Eddie isn’t there (or maybe he is tbh i haven’t fully decided) but he’s at the movie theatre and he sees Robin and Steve who look horrific and definitely out of it and tries to make sure they’re okay and safe and ends up getting involved with the meat monster. here’s a little sneaky peak of that one too <3
“Alright, I’ll bite, Munson. What’s your burning question?”
“What the fuck do you call that monstrosity you’re attempting to eat? It looks like a fairy threw up in a bowl.” That pulled a sharp laugh out of Steve, which threw Eddie for a loop. His stomach fluttered nervously and he squashed it down. Steve’s genuine laughter, a blessing to his ears. Like the eagles had arrived to save him from Mt Doom, it made him feel light inside. Robin glanced at them when she heard Steve laugh and from the look on her face Eddie was in for it now. “No, I’m serious. That is horrifying.”
“That is your opinion, Munson. Erica calls it the unicorn special and I refuse to get on her bad side.” Steve replied, as if Eddie was supposed to know who Erica was. Is that his girlfriend? In response to his questioning look, Steve rolled his eyes and gestured to where a group of children were bothering Robin. The one at the front was asking for continuous samples of the various flavours. “The one at the front, that’s Erica Sinclair. Lucas’s younger sister. He was one of the ones here the other day.” Steve supplied and Eddie nodded in recognition. It felt like a lot of information that Steve was never willing to share.

Basler to the Beardmore 3: The Beardmore Glacier
As usual, if the pictures aren't working for you, please go to the official blog to see everything formatted properly.
On leaving CTAM our practical business was completed for the day, so it was time at last to do some sightseeing. We were near the top of our glacier as it was, so we flew to the southern end of the mountain range to our east and then turned to round it, and suddenly, this was revealed:
Tumblr media
I knew the Beardmore was huge. No one has made any underestimations of it, in my reading. What I was not expecting, with all the analogies of glaciers to rivers, was that the Beardmore was practically a lake, if not a sea. We had just been on such a wide plain of ice that I thought that must have been it, but the real thing caught my breath in its vastness.
Tumblr media
I can try to explain how big it was by reminding you these photos are taken from a plane quite high up, but a far better analogy can be made with a picture. The Beardmore Glacier is, on average, about the same width as the Salt Lake Valley (a little over 25km), which is similarly flanked by mountain ranges. Helpfully, the latter has has a modern American city sprawled across it, providing a context that most people will find more relatable than plains of ice. So here is a similar angle of that:
Tumblr media
Not only were we turning the corner here, but the ice was as well, and the force of that showed on the surface. See, ice is a fluid! From this angle you can easily see that the glacier ice is in fact a light blue. This is the natural colour of ice; if the ice cubes in your summer drink were big enough, they would be blue, too.
Tumblr media
When Shackleton first explored the Beardmore he reported it to be blue ice all the way up, with frequent crevasses, an account on which Scott based his plans. Some freak weather deposited thick soft snow on the bottom half of the glacier in December 1911, hiding the hard slippery surface under a blanket of miserable heavy stuff to pull a sledge through. By the time they got up here they were clear of it; I mention this now because my shots of the lower Beardmore are all into the sun so you can’t see that, in 2019, it was blue ice down there as well.
The clear blue ice of the upper Beardmore was not free of difficulty, however. Where the glacier meets the polar plateau – or, rather, where the plateau flows into the glacier – the ice breaks up as it pours over submerged mountains and buckles on itself. These are the Shackleton Ice Falls. It was a tricky enough business finding a path through them on the way up; each returning party had a worse time here on their journey back down. When the Polar Party failed to return in autumn 1912, those who had been on the Southern Journey all thought they must have died in an accident here.
Tumblr media
The mountain we had come around was of no less interest. We did a few loops of the area, so I got to see that it had an unusual bench of loose rock that had been caught and pulled along by the glacier into quite an impressive moraine.
Tumblr media
I thought I knew what this must be when I saw it, but, not having seen any photos, I didn’t want to jump to conclusions. After some investigation upon arriving home* I’m pretty sure this is in fact the Mt Buckley moraine where the Polar Party stopped for half a day’s ‘geologizing’ after surviving the harrowing icefalls. This was most likely a scientific gloss on giving Taff Evans a rest, as his condition was already starting to worry Scott, but it was here that they found a fossil Glossopteris plant which would ultimately contribute to proving the theory of continental drift. 35 pounds of geological samples, mostly from this moraine, were found with the Polar Party’s belongings when the search party found their last camp the next summer.
After another loop or two (I began to suspect that Steve was enjoying himself) we set off down the length of the glacier. This is some way down from Mt Buckley, where there is a slight pinch and the Beardmore turns a little more due north. That makes the nearer mountain The Cloudmaker, so named because the cold dry air coming off the plateau meets the damper air of the lower elevations at this turn, and produces clouds and fog. The far one with the distinctive fang shape is Mt Kyffin. It’s in the background of one of my favourite historic photos but I was astonished how big it was in context, in an already big place.
Tumblr media
You can also see, here, the different textures of the glacier surface. On the western side is a wide smooth path, which is the way ascending parties came. Down the middle was a vast labyrinth of the most hideous pressure. We hadn’t flown any closer to the ice falls than the photo above, but this gives you some idea why the explorers thought them so harrowing. The photo above is deceptive, because it looks like it’s taken from standing-human height on the ground – I am in fact a thousand feet up, in a plane. Looking down on the pressure, like this:
Tumblr media
. . . was like flying over Manhattan:
Tumblr media
As mentioned before, we had an incredibly clear and calm day at our disposal, so the Cloudmaker was off duty. Further down the glacier I got a stunning view of the smooth ‘highway’ on the west side, gleaming in the sun, with the mouth of the Beardmore ahead:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Around here we started to get into some turbulence, so instead of figuratively bouncing around the fuselage taking photos, I was instructed to strap in, in order not to do so literally. This prevented me from taking a bunch of glamour shots of Mt Kyffin, but that was providential, because it meant I saw this instead:
Tumblr media
The two things I most wanted to get a sense of, on the Beardmore, were at the top and bottom: the Shackleton Ice Falls, as described above, and the feature known as The Gateway, a narrow pass at the bottom that allowed access onto the glacier without having to deal with the similarly hazardous glacier/ice shelf interface. There are few photos or sketches of this area from 1911, as explorers had their hands too full with heavy sledges sinking deep in the soft snow that wasn’t supposed to be there, but Bowers snapped this one of the dog teams turning back from the Gateway and I recognised it instantly.
Tumblr media
The hazard they were supposed to be avoiding, by ascending via the Gateway, was a ‘chasm’ over which they never could have taken their sledges. What sort of chasm? Well, this is some idea:
Tumblr media
With that, we had left the Beardmore behind, and were on our way back across the Barrier to home. It should have been a quiet and relatively boring flight, but there were some more points of interest along the way, so I’m not letting you off the plane yet!
*Photographic records of this part of the world are scanty, one reason why I needed to go myself, and I hope my going has contributed positively to that record. Some helpful sources for ID-in what was historically known as Mt Buckley have been:

I had a dream last night that the trailer dropped and we basically broke tumblr.... in my dream I actually saw the trailer and I was like what the FUCK... it was voiceovers from Bobby and several clips from different episodes and then one clip that was clearly the episode after the blackout... and Eddie was some place with Buck.. his house I think... and he said something to Buck like ‘I need you here’ or ‘I missed you’ I can’t remember exactly but whatever he said to Buck was painfully obvious that he was telling Buck that he loves him and by Eddie’s facial expression (something like this >> 🥺) he was really adamant that Buck really heard and understood what he was saying to him. And Buck looked so shocked at whatever Eddie said. His eyes were teary and he just stood there with his mouth open, totally not expecting it. Idk I have very vivid dreams and even me in the dream was freaking out watching the trailer. Yeah this dream sounds like bs but I swear I dreamed this entire thing and then woke up like 🤔🤨 hold up and checked online to see if the trailer dropped lmao. I know they haven’t filmed that much so I don’t expect the trailer to drop yet but I was still checking because of my dream
ren did you speak to god last night
ok but seriously I need this fucking trailer to drop. I'm desperate, let me see my firefam. also if any of that happened,,,,,,,,I think I would immediately pass away and then come back to freak the fuck out with you all. pining eddie is a need at this point along with a recovery arc for him
also I get dreams like that too except mine are usually much stranger, but last night I dreamed there was a 2019 dish granted with the 2015 version of steven lim. extremely cursed video lemme tell you, but it was an unusually mundane dream for me

Bathing Beth – Retro Swimsuit for Teen-Elder
Tumblr media
With summer here, I thought I’d share this swimsuit 🌞 (aka this project has been sitting in my folder almost done for half a year and i finally got the motivation to finish it). It’s another piece of clothing made with my Beth Harmon sim in mind, but is sure to look good on anyone.
Luckily for me, the retro swimsuit from TS4 Seasons was a close match. A conversion and simple mesh edit were all I needed for it to be fit for Beth. Gone were the buttons and in its place a belt clasp, and voila, I give you Bathing Beth.
