It comes time for them to see each other. He has a key to Hen’s house for when the worst thing imaginable happens and so does she. He pushes the key in the lock, already smiling to himself and nods to Hen and Karen who are on the couch.

“Lemme taste,” he hears as he walks down the hall to Hen’s kitchen. “These ones! You’ve got to put them out for me this year. I prefer oat milk these days so remember that.”

“Dad doesn’t buy oat milk,” he hears Christopher next.

“Well, I’m sure I could convince him to.” And then Eddie sees it. Chris is smiling wide, frosting on his cheeks, Buck’s face mirroring his expression as he paints the side of the gingerbread house. Denny must be in the bathroom.

“Hey, Buck,” he greets, cheeks hurting as he smiles. He leans in to give him a kiss on the cheek, kind of getting a taste of the sweet and tart strawberry frosting they made and humming in delight.

Buck’s shuffling with his tie in the mirror. Eddie’s ready like always, dress shoes just waiting for him by the door. He waits in the doorway, slumped on it and Buck sucks his teeth. “Come ‘ere,” Eddie signals. He hates how Buck hesitates, and he doesn’t understand. Is he wanted? Is he hated? What’s the goal of all this?

Dr.Miller seems hellbent on getting them back together and Eddie’s willing to fight. With Shannon, he buried his head in the sand, dug his heels in as she tried to pry about where he was at. And he gets urges to do that here, but he’s not failing Buck more than he already has. He takes the tie in hand, a gift from Maddie, and fixes it straight. “You still don’t know how to do these, huh?”

Buck rolls his eyes and sighs. “I get it, I’m younger than our five year old.” Eddie opens his mouth to protest. It wasn’t a dig, it was meant to be a light—hearted joke. They aren’t there yet. Maybe they won’t ever be there again. He wants to tap Buck under his chin, a light and fond touch he used to do all the time, but he just leaves the room instead.

His husband follows behind. He turns around before he opens the door. “What if we stayed home? That’ll still be us doing the assignment, right? We can just watch a movie that you like—”

“And you’ll fall asleep.” He huffs out a tiny laugh.

“And I’ll fall asleep, but we would’ve gotten at least 20 uninterrupted minutes together.”

Basically, Buck is trying to reform his image and Eddie is coming out so they are fake dating. Theyre both singers and they're doing a collab album which is like pre relationship songs, relationship songs, and then the break up and a lot of the fic is like fan reactions and theories and stuff.
