in the comments of one of those "chinese and american netizens discover common ground and misconceptions" posts someone responded to the incredulity over legal child marriage in the US (As of June 2024, child marriage is legal in 37 states.[2][3][4][5]) by linking to an article about smuggled child brides being brought to china illegally

idk why. as some kind of rebuttal i guess? but it does speak to a lot of conversations where someone fails to identify the salient point under discussion: in this case the fact that it is legal in place A, to the shock of people from place B, where it is illegal. people are aware that illegal things happen. illegal child marriages take place in just about every country on earth where child marriage is illegal because, without exception, every country contains a solid bedrock of cunts in it somewhere.

but the fucking point was that it was legal! and i just. remain so exhausted by the lack of, i don't even know what this is. not literacy, not critical thinking, that would be the next step up from this level of failure. "we are talking about x". inability to understand what part of the conversation is the point. so deeply bewildering and exhausting. it's so dumb that it feels genuinely deliberate.
