‘I’ve starred in The Archers for 20 years but could never afford my own farm’
Fame & Fortune: The BBC actor on money mistakes, theatre hecklers, and his 20-year radio stint
Tumblr media

Andrew Wincott is an actor, best known for playing Adam in the BBC Radio 4 drama The Archers, which he joined 20 years ago. After studying English and then doing teacher training at Oxford, the 61-year-old taught for two years before going to Webber Douglas drama school, where fellow actors Hugh Bonneville and Rebecca Front were contemporaries.
He then worked on the regional theatre circuit, and later became a member of the BBC Radio Drama Company, before joining the cast of The Archers in 2003. The father of one lives in Clapham, south London.
How did your start in life affect your outlook on money?
My two brothers and I grew up in Oxfordshire where my parents ran a catering business.
But the 1970s were a difficult time for a lot of businesses, so after 10 years enjoying an idyllic life in the countryside, we moved into the flat above the restaurant and cake shop the family owned, Wincott’s, in Banbury.
Work always came first for my parents, so for a number of years we didn’t go away in the summer.
Did you receive pocket money?
Yes, and I spent it on Marvel comics, and later on albums like Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here, which I played endlessly in the mid-70s.
What was your first job?
After leaving school in 1978, before going to university, I worked at the Dragon Prep School in Oxford doing a variety of jobs, one of which involved keeping the headmaster’s drinks cupboard well-stocked, and serving gin and tonics at garden parties.
The G&Ts I poured were notoriously generous. Occasionally I even got to ‘sample’ the headmaster’s gin myself.
But my first proper acting job, which also secured my Equity card [a trade union for the performing arts], came after I gatecrashed an audition in 1987 and landed the part of Alec in Tess of the D’ Urbervilles at the Orchard Theatre Company in Barnstaple, which toured the West Country.

How long did you work in regional theatre for? Was it lucrative?
The best part of a decade, appearing everywhere from Colchester to Perth, and Harrogate to Theatr Clwyd in Wales, doing both Shakespeare and modern plays, often playing leading roles.
Money was minimal – I was paid about £160-£170 a week on my first acting job – but the Equity Touring allowance helped.
Regional theatre allowed me to hone my skills as an actor. Once, I was heckled by an inebriated audience member who loudly greeted every entrance I made in Tess with a cry of “Asshole!”.
However, you just have to stay focused. He was gone by the interval – probably back to the bar. This was in Falmouth, now affectionately rebranded among friends as “Foulmouth”!
Have you experienced any lean times as an actor?
It took me nine months to land my first proper acting job, and until then I was working on the fringe – just earning expenses, or profit sharing if I was lucky.
Most actors have good years and bad years. So you have to set aside money to see you through the lean spells, as well as save enough to pay your tax bill at the end of the year.
How did you land the part of Adam in The Archers?
I actually played a Danish agricultural student for a few months in the 1990s – but then, a decade or so later, I was invited to audition with a dozen other actors for the role of Adam at Pebble Mill in 2003.
I heard nothing for 10 days, but was then asked to come back for a recall [second audition] and was offered the role.
Now, it's like having a second family. This month I’ve been a cast regular for almost exactly 20 years. Providing you aren’t written out (or killed off), there’s a certain security.
Coincidentally, my mother grew up on a Home Farm [a key location in the radio drama] and went to the same school, although not at the same time, as Godfrey Baseley, who created The Archers.
Does The Archers pay enough for you to buy a farm of your own?
The cast only works on The Archers for about one week in the month – we record blocks of episodes several weeks ahead of transmission – and radio pays somewhere between theatre and television.
So I doubt it would pay for a farm in the UK, though it might eventually just pay for a small farmhouse in rural Andalucia, where I enjoy spending time.
So who knows? I might become a Spanish granjero and grow olives one day.
You also find time to record audiobooks and video games?
I’ve recorded hundreds of audiobooks and video games over the last 15 years or so. An audiobook takes days, if not weeks, to prepare and then record in studio.
I’ve voiced everything from The Wind in the Willows to Nineteen Eighty-Four and the classics of Flaubert.
But it's hard work for often little reward. It can be fun creating bizarre voices for elves, orks or extraterrestrials in fantasy books, but the concentration required when the red light is on is second to none.
It's just you, the words on the page and the voices in your imagination.

Have you got a pension?
Yes, I took out an Equity pension through my union years ago and still pay into it. I also have a SIPP.
What’s been your best investment?
The investment I made in going to drama school in the mid-1980s. Doing that gave me classical training as an actor. I probably wouldn’t be in The Archers today without that.
Do you own a property?
Yes, a second floor, two-bedroom flat in a property in Clapham, south London, dating back to the 1900s. I bought it for £60,000 in 1991, though it’s now worth a considerable six-figure sum, I imagine.
It’s an excellent location for getting in and out of town.
Are you a spender or a saver?
Instinctively a saver. As an actor you never know what’s around the corner, and we know if we're working there will be tax to pay. Not to mention investing for the future.
What’s your greatest financial indulgence?
Every now and then, I'll spend a few days in southern Spain, specifically Las Alpujarras – the foothills of the Sierra Nevada – where I can recharge my batteries, or prepare a book for audio in tranquility. I'm learning Spanish now, too.
What has been your worst financial decision?
Buying into the Woodford Equity Investment Fund, as part of my SIPP.
Although Neil Woodford was considered a star fund manager, the fund collapsed and the administrator is now embroiled in collective litigation to recoup losses. Never a dull moment.
Do you donate to charity?
Yes, Art Fund, which facilitates the acquisition of artworks for the nation. Doing so also entitles you to half-price admission to special exhibitions, such as those at the Tate, the Courtauld or the National Gallery.
Do you plan to do a June Spencer (Peggy Archer) and still be in The Archers when you’re 100?
Who knows? The Archers is an extraordinary institution, part of our cultural fabric as a farming nation – it boasts such longevity, too.
Maybe my character will outlive me? I'd like to think he will… before the next generation takes over.
The Archers, Radio 4, weekdays at 7pm; Omnibus edition, Sundays at 10am

"The original "Uncle Tom",
Rev. Josiah Henson and wife; Dresden ,Canada (c1907)
Josiah Henson (June 15, 1789 – May 5, 1883) was an author, abolitionist, and minister. Born into slavery in Charles County, Maryland, he escaped to Upper Canada (now Ontario) in 1830, and founded a settlement and laborer's school for other fugitive slaves at Dawn, near Dresden in Kent County. Henson's autobiography, The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada, as Narrated by Himself (1849), is widely believed to have inspired the character of the fugitive slave, George Harris, in Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), who returned to Kentucky for his wife and escaped across the Ohio River, eventually to Canada. Following the success of Stowe's novel, Henson issued an expanded version of his memoir in 1858, Truth Stranger Than Fiction. Father Henson's Story of His Own Life (published Boston: John P. Jewett & Company, 1858). Interest in his life continued, and nearly two decades later, his life story was updated and published as Uncle Tom's Story of His Life: An Autobiography of the Rev. Josiah Henson (1876).
Josiah Henson was born on a farm near Port Tobacco in Charles County, Maryland. When he was a boy, his father was punished for standing up to a slave owner, receiving one hundred lashes and having his right ear nailed to the whipping-post, and then cut off. His father was later sold to someone in Alabama. Following his family's master's death, young Josiah was separated from his mother, brothers, and sisters. His mother pleaded with her new owner Isaac Riley, Riley agreed to buy back Henson so she could at least have her youngest child with her; on condition he would work in the fields. Riley would not regret his decision, for Henson rose in his owners' esteem, and was eventually entrusted as the supervisor of his master's farm, located in Montgomery County, Maryland (in what is now North Bethesda). In 1825, Mr. Riley fell onto economic hardship and was sued by a brother in law. Desperate, he begged Henson (with tears in his eyes) to promise to help him. Duty bound, Henson agreed. Mr. R then told him that he needed to take his 18 slaves to his brother in Kentucky by foot. They arrived in Daviess County Kentucky in the middle of April 1825 at the plantation of Mr. Amos Riley. In September 1828 Henson returned to Maryland in an attempt to buy his freedom from Issac Riley.
He tried to buy his freedom by giving his master $350 which he had saved up, and a note promising a further $100. Originally Henson only needed to pay the extra $100 by note, Mr. Riley however, added an extra zero to the paper and changed the fee to $1000. Cheated of his money, Henson returned to Kentucky and then escaped to Kent County, U.C., in 1830, after learning he might be sold again. There he founded a settlement and laborer's school for other fugitive slaves at Dawn, Upper Canada. Henson crossed into Upper Canada via the Niagara River, with his wife Nancy and their four children. Upper Canada had become a refuge for slaves from the United States after 1793, when Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe passed "An Act to prevent further introduction of Slaves, and to limit the Term of Contracts for Servitude within this Province". The legislation did not immediately end slavery in the colony, but it did prevent the importation of slaves, meaning that any U.S. slave who set foot in what would eventually become Ontario, was free. By the time Henson arrived, others had already made Upper Canada home, including African Loyalists from the American Revolution, and refugees from the War of 1812.
Henson first worked farms near Fort Erie, then Waterloo, moving with friends to Colchester by 1834 to set up a African settlement on rented land. Through contacts and financial assistance there, he was able to purchase 200 acres (0.81 km2) in Dawn Township, in next-door Kent County, to realize his vision of a self-sufficient community. The Dawn Settlement eventually prospered, reaching a population of 500 at its height, and exporting black walnut lumber to the United States and Britain. Henson purchased an additional 200 acres (0.81 km2) next to the Settlement, where his family lived. Henson also became an active Methodist preacher, and spoke as an abolitionist on routes between Tennessee and Ontario. He also served in the Canadian army as a military officer, having led a African militia unit in the Rebellion of 1837. Though many residents of the Dawn Settlement returned to the United States after slavery was abolished there, Henson and his wife continued to live in Dawn for the rest of their lives. Henson died at the age of 93 in Dresden, on May 5, 1883.

Information on Graham Coxon
Early life
Coxon was born on 12 March 1969 in Rinteln, West Germany, where his father, Bob Coxon, was stationed as a clarinet player and band leader in the British Army.
As a child, he moved first to Spondon, Derby, England, a period during which he became a fan of Derby County.
He then moved to Colchester, Essex, England, where he grew up and met fellow Blur member Damon Albarn at The Stanway School, then known as Stanway Comprehensive, at the age of 11.
At the beginning of their relationship, Coxon would play the saxophone on Albarn's original songs before playing the guitar in several small Colchester bands. He appeared on the popular BBC children's show Blue Peter twice.
Blur
Coxon studied Fine Arts at Goldsmiths College, London, for two years, where early on he met bassist Alex James.
In his time there he mixed with upcoming talents such as Damien Hirst, Michael Landy, Sam Taylor-Wood, and Abigail Lane, some of the future leading lights of the Britart movement. His musical interests were heavily influenced by Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett, whose work he had discovered by 1986.
He quit college due to the increasing success of his band at the time, Seymour, which later changed its name to Blur because the recording company, Food Records, thought Seymour was too 'student-ish'.
They presented a list to the band of preferred names which included "The Shining Path" and "Blur". As well as providing all guitars, backing vocals, and occasional drums, Coxon's lo-fi and alternative musical style and tastes influenced the band's less commercial music in the late 1990s.
He sang lead vocals on songs including "Red Necks", "You're So Great" from the album Blur, and "Coffee & TV", as well as a section of the chorus of "Tender", the bridge of "Lonesome Street" and a section of "Thought I Was a Spaceman" on The Magic Whip.
During the 1995 period of the media-dubbed 'Battle of Britpop', Coxon became increasingly weary and suspicious of the music industry.
His behaviour was occasionally awkward, such as refusing to appear in the video for Blur song "Country House" unless he could dress as a milkman and take no part in any action with which he felt uncomfortable.
In November 2001, Coxon was admitted to the Priory Hospital for 28 days to be treated for alcoholism. During this time, Blur began the recording sessions that would produce the material for their next album, Think Tank.
In February 2002, Coxon rejoined the band in the studio for the rest of the recording of Think Tank but after five days was asked by then manager Chris Morrison not to go back into the studio as the other members of the band had reported that the session was not going too well with him present.
Coxon took this as a sign and left the band. As he stated in an interview in 2006, "I had a breakthrough, I think my life just became calmer, I gave up drinking.
My priorities changed as I had a young daughter. The group didn't want me to record for the Think Tank album, so I took it as a sign to leave".
His last contribution to Blur was a song called "Battery in Your Leg", the closing song on Blur's 2003 album Think Tank, before leaving the line-up. Damon Albarn later revealed that the song "Sweet Song" was written after he had been looking at a photograph of Coxon.
After Damon Albarn's revealing that he and Coxon had rebuilt their relationship, on 9 December 2008, Blur announced that the whole band would reunite for a show at Hyde Park on 3 July 2009.
More dates were announced and the band played festival dates at Glastonbury, T in the Park and Oxegen 2009 as well as headlining shows in Manchester, Newcastle, Wolverhampton, Goldsmiths College and the East Anglian Railway Museum in Colchester. Blur also played one show in Lyon, France.
On 17 April 2010, the band released their first single since 2003, "Fool's Day", for the Record Store Day event as a 7" limited to 1000 copies.
The band released the single as a free download on their official website the next day.
More recently Blur announced via the NME website that they would reunite every so often and record more singles, preferably on 7 inch. However, Damon also stated that an album was not on its way as they were all too busy with their own individual projects.
On 19 February 2015, Coxon and the band announced on social media that they would be releasing their eighth studio album on 27 April, titled The Magic Whip, Blur's first album in 12 years and first in 16 years in their original lineup.
Solo work
Coxon had already released three solo albums while a member of Blur before his 2002 departure.
His first, The Sky Is Too High was released on his own Transcopic label in 1998.
This was followed by The Golden D in 2000 and Crow Sit on Blood Tree in 2001.
After going solo full-time, he released The Kiss of Morning in 2002. The album was promoted with the single "Escape Song". In 2004, Coxon released his fifth solo album Happiness in Magazines, produced by ex-Blur and The Smiths producer Stephen Street.
This proved to be his most successful album to date, and he received the NME Award for Best Solo Artist in 2005.
In March 2006 he released his sixth solo album, called Love Travels at Illegal Speeds, again produced by Stephen Street. It marked Coxon's first album away from his now-defunct indie label 'Transcopic'.
The LP was preceded by the singles "Standing on My Own Again" on 27 February and "You & I". Coxon embarked on a tour of the UK, starting at Newcastle University.
He was also involved in a single supporting the England national football team at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
The song was a re-working of the Sham 69 hit "Hurry Up Harry", and was released as "Sham 69 and The Special Assembly" (as well as Coxon and Sham 69, Virgin Radio DJ Christian O'Connell, who had run a competition on his show to find a band to record a song in support of the team, was involved in the recording of the song). "Hurry Up England" entered the UK Singles Chart at No. 10.
In October 2006, Coxon released a double live album Burnt to Bitz: At the Astoria immediately after his sold-out London Astoria show. The album features 27 songs, with at least one song from each of his albums. In July 2007 Coxon released a single with Paul Weller, called "This Old Town". The single peaked at No. 39 in the UK Singles Chart.
Coxon's seventh 15-track studio album titled The Spinning Top, produced again by Stephen Street, was released on 11 May 2009.
Coxon stated that the LP, which is primarily acoustic, followed a narrative – the story of a man from birth to death.
"The album is mainly an acoustic journey although there is, of course, some explosive electric guitar action," he explained. "There are some guests too! Robyn Hitchcock supplies some counter-attack guitar, Jas Singh plays dilruba and jori with his friends Gurjit Sembhi on taus and Jaskase Singh on esraj.
Danny Thompson plays the legendary Victoria, Graham Fox gives plenty of swing on the drums and sizzle cymbals and Louis Vause tinkles the ivories."
Pre-release response had been positive, with Monday Field of Frank Booth Review dubbing the album "a staggering artistic achievement, and Coxon's best solo release to date."
His eighth solo album A+E was released in April 2012.
Coxon wrote and recorded the score for the 2017 Channel 4 / Netflix television series The End of the F***ing World; it was his first original score.
The soundtrack was released in January 2018.
In September of the same year, Coxon embarked on a solo tour in North America that featured some of the songs from his score.
In February 2020, Coxon released an album for the fictional band Bloodwitch, to be a part of the soundtrack of the Netflix series I Am Not Okay with This, featuring singer Tatyana Richaud.
In 2021, Coxon published Superstate, a graphic novel accompanied by a studio album of the same name, bringing the concept of a dystopian futuristic universe. The cover art, much like most of his solo works, was illustrated by himself.
Following in 2023, the folk rock band The Waeve, consisting of Graham Coxon and Rose Elinor Dougall as members, released their debut self-titled album, with an England-wide tour.
Transcopic and other contributions
Coxon's independent label, Transcopic, was co-managed with his friend, and then business partner, Jamie Davis. Davis now runs Independent label Ark Recordings.
Coxon illustrated and designed all of his own album art, and collaborated with his friend Nick Craske creating abstract digital work for the release of The Spinning Top; they also filmed two music videos, "Sorrow's Army" and "'In The Morning".
Coxon also continued painting a series of personal work, most of which remained unseen until 2004, when he exhibited at the ICA in London.
Coxon has also been involved in remixing other peoples tracks, including Idlewild and Lowgold both of which were released as b-sides and the latter remix was later re-released on the bands anthology release Keep Music Miserable.
In September 2006, Coxon revealed a musical soundscape, "english shoes squeek", created especially for "Verheaven" an exhibition at London's Riflemaker Gallery of the work of artist Julie Verhoeven.
Coxon appeared on John McCusker's Under One Sky, providing the song "All Has Gone".
In 2009, Coxon was involved in the creation of the Pete Doherty solo album Grace/Wastelands.
Doherty had entered a period of sobriety, during which he holed up with Coxon to work on his debut solo album, Grace/Wasteland, (released 24 March 2009) a diverse collection of 12 songs that bounce between reggae and Doherty's standard post-punk. Coxon played on all but one track on the album.

Mary I's Fight For The Throne
24th July - Mary sets off on a royal progress
On the 24th July, after Mary "arranged with her chaplains that they should give thanks and pour forth prayers to Almighty God, the first and sole author of this victory" 1, the new queen of England leaves her castle of Framlingham for Ipswich.
Upon entering the city she is gifted "eleven pounds sterling in gold; with her unmatched kindness she accepted this sum with much gratitude. As soon as her Highness had entered the town, some pretty little boys presented her with a golden heart inscribed 'the heart of the people'." 2 There, Mary is reunited with her household servant Francis Englefield, imprisoned since February.
Various people flock to see Mary, offering fealty and begging pardon, including Elizabeth Howard, Duchess of Richmond and widow of Mary's half brother Henry Fitzroy. Mary refuses to see her "because of a letter she had rashly sent to the [Privy] Council, which mentioned the queen with little honour and scant respect." 3
After Ipswich Mary moves on to Colchester, lodging in the house of her mother's former lady, Muriel Christmas. Here in Colchester, she writes to Peter Carew and other esquires thanking them for their proclamations:
Trusty and right wellbeloved, we greet you well and your letter addressed hither perceive your diligence, your faithfulness and true hearts ready to serve and to have defended us against our traitors and rebels, who now God be thanked are under feet, and the chief thereof as the Duke of Northumberland and others admitted to ward in our Tower of London and other prisons. Wherefore as ye have well deserved we give you and all our good subjects in your company our right thanks, minding to consider the same to your comfort, requiring and praying you all this trouble now being overlaid, to desire our said subjects in God’s peace and ours to repair home to their dwelling places and there to remain till we shall need their further services, with continual prayer to God for his grace to preserve us and the coming wealth to his glory. Given under our signet at our town of Colchester, the first year of our reign 4
After leaving Colchester she returns to her palace at Beaulieu. Around 2am, Mary's cousin and Jane Grey's mother Frances, Duchess of Suffolk, arrives "to tell her that her husband had been the victim of an attempt to poison him, and that the Duke of Northumberland had done it. She then prayed for her husband's release from the Tower, where he had been imprisoned two days previously." 5 Mary is merciful and allows the Duke of Suffolk's sentence to be commuted to house arrest.
On the 28th, Mary finally meets with the Imperial ambassadors after sending "a special messenger to beg us to make haste and press on to our destination this same day." 6 After their arrival, between 10pm and midnight, she tells them the haste has been prompted by letters found on Henry Dudley "who was on his way back from France with letters from the King for the Lady Jane of Suffolk, whom he styled Queen of England." 7
Mary carries on her progress to London, meeting up with her sister Elizabeth at Wanstead. Elizabeth had wrote to her older sister "to congratulate her on her accession, and to beg her to let her know in what dress she desires to see her when she goes to salute her: whether her garb shall be mourning or not." 8
Now, the sisters reunite in the wake of their brothers death, and Mary welcomes her sister "with great warmth, even to kissing all her ladies." 9
Meanwhile...
On the 25th, at 3pm, the Duke of Northumberland arrives at the Tower. He, his sons and co-conspirators including Sir John Gates, Sir Thomas Palmer and Francis Hastings, earl of Huntingdon, are brought by the Earl of Arundel along "streets full of people, which cursed him and called him traitor without measure." 10
The Duchess of Northumberland is let out of prison and sets out to meet Mary, but "the Queen ordered her to return to London, and refused to give her audience." 11
After raising a rebellion to help Mary, on the 28th July Edward Hastings is sworn on to her Privy Council. A day after, his co-leader Sir Edmund Peckham is also sworn on. 12

That night, at the estate of Lord Verney, 19th Baron Willoughby de Broke, the game of whist took an unprecedented turn. First, the Earl of Colchester showed up with his beau, a foreign Lady that enchanted the whole room with a male-like wit and quite the sharp tongue, as charming and easy-going, the perfect company, that he was. Second, when the men retired for a game of whist and the ladies stayed in the living room, at the second hand Lady Colchester entered, declaring she always found whist such a fascinating concept but never had the chance to assist in one game, back in Bukhara. She moved her hands in a way that was as unusual as mesmerising to watch, long fingers clad in cream silk under her purple gown, complimenting the tone of her skin. Chatting with Lord Hastings about the Middle East where he was sent in his service, she took no notice of the gasps and outrage she cause by sitting directly on Colchester's lap, as the worst of the women, and her gracious hand, deftly placed on the green, sent what felt like a breeze, as if the room itself breathed. The cards on the table didn't move, tho, and everyone thought it was an impression. She smiled amiably, a glint of intelligence in her eyes, as she bent to press a long kiss to her husband. They won the game, somehow, even if Willoughby de Broke had all the best cards. And the next morning, Lady Verney discovered her most precious tiara, a family heirloom that was passed from generations from one Verney wife to the other ever since Cromwell's Protectorate and that was told to be blessed by unnamed powers, was gone. And yet, who would have suspected the Colchesters, so amiable, so lovely if a little too forward -dued to the exotic nature of the lady, no doubt, that's what the contesses and baronesses at the dinner said anyway- and, as was clear to everyone, always in plain eyesight, catching everyone's attention.

They're on duty for the Queen, making a show and totally not doing anything mischievous! I can't believe it took me this long before drawing a game of whist.
Till Queendom Come is a project about an Indian Rakshasi who’s trying to find her lost heart after the East India Company stole it, a Jotunn who didn’t feel like going back to Norway after the Vikings invasions, and the youngest granddaughter of the last druid of St. Ives who’s now trying to keep on the family tradition on her own in spite of being the wrong gender to do so. Started as a project set in Edwardian England, born in a urge of sudden irritation about seeing Victoria being romanticised everywhere by a cynical comic artist who majored in English. You can read it or on Webtoon!

Hospital staff have begun their strike over plans to move their jobs out of the NHS.
Hundreds of cleaners, porters, caterers and other members of Unison who work at East Suffolk and North Essex Foundation Trust (ESNEFT) walked out on Monday.
The industrial action will continue until Friday and will see sites including Colchester Hospital and Aldeburgh Community Hospital in Suffolk affected.
The trust said it was "working hard" to ensure patients would "receive the service they expect".
"Our top priority is patient care and safety and we are working hard to plan for the period of industrial action to make sure everyone who uses our hospitals continues to receive the service they expect," said chief executive Nick Hulme.
"We are disappointed to learn that Unison has gone down this route while we are still actively involved in ongoing conversations with them and their members.
"We are listening to our staff about the issues that are important to them."
He added that while a full business case had not yet been submitted to the trust board, it wanted to engage with staff and the union to get the "best possible service for our patients".
Tumblr media
NHS foundation trust chief executive Nick Hulme said the priority was patient care and safety
Natalia Janusz, a housekeeper of six years at Colchester Hospital, said many of her colleagues felt they were just "a number".
"Everyone forgets about us but we are important, we are united and we are together," said the 36-year-old.
Tracy Lavery, who has worked at the hospital for 16 years, added: "We go above and beyond, we're not just cleaners - we're counsellors.
"We signed up to work for the NHS because it's something we really, really believe in and are passionate about.
"How dare they outsource us like we're nothing."
Tumblr media
Natalia Janusz has worked as a housekeeper at Colchester Hospital for six years
Unison previously said members were concerned that outsourcing contracts would threaten pay and conditions, and put patient safety at risk.
It said the majority of workers affected by the issue were at Colchester Hospital with most "soft facility management" services at Ipswich Hospital already outsourced to a private company.
However, Unison said staff at Ipswich had received fewer days of annual leave and lower sick pay when their jobs were outsourced, and they had missed out on a one-off payment for NHS staff.

After graduating in 1984 from Leeds University with a BA (Hons), I entered the world of Marketing, moving on to Product Manager with Arthur Sanderson & sons (now Sanderson Design Group).
In 1988 I decided to set up my own Soft Furnishing company and thus Jane Greer Interiors was born. Since then I have developed a wide client base mainly around Colchester where I am lucky enough to have repeat customers.
My workroom is now ideally situated at home where I can appreciate the beautiful country views while immersing myself in the process of cutting and designing with fabric.
I like to think that I offer an extremely high standard of workmanship at very competitive prices. My relaxed, approachable style inspires people and in so doing helps clients to succeed in creating beautiful, affordable interiors.
