Black Box Diaries (dir. Shiori Itō) x DOXA 2024.
Itō, an experienced journalist, documents her own harrowing legal battle inside the unfriendly Japanese court system after accusing an older male colleague with powerful political ties of rape. This major and rare occurrence is due to a judicial environment designed to protect Japan's patriarchal establishment and shame women from speaking out against sexual violence. As both a piece of journalism and a diary of legal proceedings, the scrappy documentary sparks a reckoning within the protective Eastern society. It proves to be an inspiring template for how other victims and survivors can hope to find a small measure of justice when their voices are otherwise muzzled.
Screened at the 2024 DOXA Documentary Film Festival as part of the Justice Forum program.

The One Piece live action show gives me hope for a Black Lagoon live action show with Rei Hiro as the executive producer and showrunner being James Wan or Chad Sathelski.
Give me Chloe Bennet or Jamie Chung as Revy please!

i can’t believe I watched a 3h 32 mins Russian movie because of tumblr. I like watching long movies, but right now I didn’t have the time for this. Ok, let me start, I don’t like giving spoilers when I talk about movies so don’t worry about that. first of all, I loved the slow motion frames, I LOVED IT. The ambient this whole movie has made me feel like i was in a dream, one in which i was present as a ghost but refused to participate at all. The introduction of the characters was perfect, the characters per se don’t speak a lot during the movie (they are scenes were they don’t even speak for long periods), but all the flashbacks tell you the motivations and conflicts of each character so well. At some point it gets a little confusing with the shots jumping from past to present (or future even if it’s by 5 minutes), however I wouldn’t change that shot of a clock for 2 minutes with just the background sound for nothing. The movie uses sound to narrate characters actions in a way I haven’t seen before. Amazing. The characters don’t speak a lot but that doesn’t make this feel like a silent movie. Everything is noise, in such a way that even silence feels so loud. At the end when he dies (this is not a spoiler, you know he’s gonna die since the start) everything feels quiet for the first time and I feel like I’m there and I could have done something but I didn’t. I felt powerless as everything moved by the unmovable force of time. Amazing film. I don’t know what else to say, I only know I need to go and process all that. Go and watch the movie.

The Spectacular Now (2013)
Directed by: James Ponsoldt
Written by: Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber
Rated R for cursing, underage drinking and some drug use, and teens having sex.
Movie Synopsis: Sutter loves to party, drink, and has no plans for the future. Aimee is a nice girl who isn't part of the big crowds. The two find themselves attracted to each other despite being polar opposites after Sutter wakes up in Aimee's garden.
Review 3.4 stars
The Spectacular Now is a film that shows us the lives of teenagers in a raw way. It doesn't care for overcomplicated drama or flashy lifestyles; it simply flows through the motions from the perspective of "God's favorite drunk" Sutter Keely. However, production-wise the scenes feel short and distressed. Time flies by and relationships develop but as a viewer we aren't given enough time to process them before moving on to the next thing in order to fit into the hour-and-a-half time frame. This causes the characters -that feel like real-life teenagers- to lose their depths as well as time to explore their insecurities and complexities as humans. All in all good film and concept, but the editing and composition of the film leaves a lot to be desired.

Moonage Daydream (2022, dir. Bret Morgan) - review by Rookie-Critic
Moonage Daydream is the Bowie documentary that nobody thought we needed, and done in a way that nobody really expected. It really plays more like a video collage than a documentary. With concert footage and pieces of old interviews overlaid with a myriad of archival footage of the rock icon. A clash of light and sound that somehow manages to form itself into a celebration of the life of David Bowie. It never lets us in too close, this movie isn't interested in uncovering new discoveries about Bowie, nor does it seek to even present a chronology of his work; it does, however, weave itself like a painting through his career in a manner befitting Kirk Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five, where time is merely a suggestion in how events and footage is strung together. Bowie exists in all his forms all at once here. There is a general trend towards the present, but it is scatter-plotted, at best. We see Bowie as the man might have seen himself, as a being unstuck in time, here to live amongst the rest of us for a short time, his sole duty being to delight and entertain. This format, of course, does tend to leave stuff out, but again, this film isn't seeking to give a fully fleshed out picture of the man, the myth, or the legend. Its ultimate goal is to just exist as a capsule of the spirit of the man, the essence of the myth, and to celebrate the legend in a way that, if he were still alive, I feel like Bowie himself would have really appreciated. While I did really enjoy myself with this one, I have to admit I was already a fan of Bowie's, and if you aren't already initiated, you probably won't get much, if anything, out of it. However, to all the David Bowie fans in the audience, seek this one out, it's an absolute trip.
Score: 8/10
Currently available to rent or purchase on digital (iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, etc.) and on DVD & Blu-ray through Decal Releasing/Neon.

31 Days of Horror Day 27: The Silence (2017)
If you’ve seen some of the films I’ve watched, they’ve been zombie films. George A. Romero is my favorite horror director because of the work he did with the zombie genre. Heck, he created the zombie genre. Without him, films like Cargo (2017) wouldn’t exist. And just like Romero’s zombie films, Cargo (2017) goes beyond the blood and gore to tell a more emotional tale. This particular undead…
