GODZILLA
Happy anniversary to the king of the monsters!
I was watching a Dino Diego video about the story behind the creation of The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and decided to make this. Not exactly a "timeline" drawing since Godzilla is kinda unrelated to the previous monsters (who knows if that's true), but they're strangely related at the same time, being some of the first depictions of kaiju, curiously inspired by dinosaurs, and I wanted to put them together. Also, I always wanted to draw both the Rhedosaurus and the sea monster, and this was the perfect excuse (I hope Harryhausen isn't looking down on this from heaven with disapproval since he didn't liked Godzilla lol)
Always glad to draw dino-monsters :)

The Brontosaurus armature from King Kong and The Son of Kong (both 1933). Looks as huggable as a rat terrier, but that foam-rubber scowl is the face of one mean fucker.

Somehow, Godzilla Minus One does the impossible: it makes it personal. It makes the lizard, an amorphous metaphor throughout its years, the spectre not just of WWII, but of survivor guilt, of grief, of the ghosts of those lost coming back to say 'how dare you move on, how dare you live whilst we have perished.' Not only that, but it made me feel Hiroshima and Nagasaki in a way that, whilst spectacular, Oppenheimer failed to do. Such a fucking good movie.

Btw, here is a gallery of Pacific Rim concept art. There are also some other storyboards floating around, iirc?

okay, so i recently watched a god-awful movie from 1971 called "Horror of the Blood Monsters". while it contained some so-bad-it's good moments, it was mostly unbearable to watch. however, the parts that were the most interesting and entertaining, were colorized clips from a 1956 black-&-white Filipino english language film called "Tagani" (Alternatively called "Kahariang Bato" for the Tagalong release). I mean just look at this!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this looks so fun!
Tumblr media
there's elaborate creature costuming that is really fun to see and at times fairly impressive for a low budget Filipino production in the 50s! i mean, just look at these sequences involving humanoid crab and bat creatures!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and there's a surprising amount of body diversity too! there are fat folks and a few actors with dwarfism who don't appear to be playing nonhuman roles!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so, i thought, i should find a copy of Tagani that i can watch since that's what i'd really like to be watching in the first place. but...
i can't fucking find it anywhere.
no uploads, no streaming, no home video releases, not even any indications of film reels being shown of it. what the fuck? where is Tagani??? have i stumbled into lost media?
the only indications of its existence are the footage in Horror of the Blood Monsters, a poster, and a trailer uploaded to youtube. i found links to the film uploaded to youtube when i searched on duckduckgo, but when i clicked on them, the uploads were gone! I was able to find a 1080p copy of HotBM, so in a just world, i would be able to find a 1080p copy of Tagani as well.
if anyone has this magnificent film archived or knows where i can go to find a copy of this, please let me know! i'd love to watch it and help preserve it! if you'd like to watch the Tagani segments in Horror of the Blood Monsters, i recommend skipping most of the portions involving the main cast of white american actors for the best experience. I do not recommend watching the full film as it's SO boring in most scenes. but the Tagani scenes never fail to entertain

I remember that I posted this Moder illustration back when I made it in 2022, but I completely forgot that I also drew a corresponding Ītzpāpālōtl from No One Gets Out Alive, so I'm posting both of them! Both monsters were designed by Keith Thompson. If he's done concept art for a movie, I want to see that movie.

Not only were these two books an unforgettable part of my childhood, but they heavily influenced the writing of The Monstrous Adventures of Mummy Man and Waffles!
Movie Monsters by Alan Ormsby offers a glimpse at each of the classic movie monsters like Dracula, the Wolfman, and (of course) the Mummy. This is followed by illustrated pages that teach you how to do your own monster makeup. There’s even a script for a monster play you can perform with friends!
Meanwhile, How to Care For Your Monster by Norman Bridwell gives you pointers on exactly that, so you can make your very own vampire, Frankenstein Monster, werewolf, or mummy happy.
As a kid, I loved these books to death. As an adult, I still do. They made me who I am, and I’m happy to do my part in keeping the love of monsters alive.
If you or someone in your life enjoys monsters, spooky stuff, goofy humor, and fun, please give The Monstrous Adventures of Mummy Man and Waffles a try. You can order it by clicking on the book title here, or ask for it at your local library!
