#mouthwatering melon

I wanted to make Monty's Mouthwatering Melon Meltdown today, but...

We wound up with this sad, yellow watermelon. And no, it's not one of the watermelons that's supposed to be yellow.

The lime juice saved the drink this time, but I want to try it again with a better watermelon.

König fluff. Also, mentions of gore. But you know, it's par the course with him.

As if an angel pissed on your head. That's how your kindness and affection feels to König. Unbelievable stroke of unearned luck.

König is the type of guy who will break enemies' backs on his knee like they're made of matchsticks.

Yet when the squad returns to the base and he sees you, his Absolutely Non-Obvious Crush, lounging around the helipad, smiling and waving at the boys - he gets all Nervous under that filthy sniper hood.

"Yo, you won't believe what the big guy did today!" cries out one of your teammates, patting the giant on the back. Lower part of said back, more like it. There isn't anyone on base who could actually reach the top part without standing on their toes.

"He went through five of them in a row, no knife, no nothing, just his bare hands - "

You meet König's tired grey eyes. In passing, because then he looks away, his hidden face suddenly burning.

"It was nothing special..." He mumbles, thick accent lending its jaggedness to his unsure words.

"Nothing special?! He took one of them by the head, smacked it on the concrete and it burst like a melon! Blood was everywhere!!!" That other guy gushes in the background. König winces.

"Hey, I'm sure you did great", you say gently, undeterred by being presented with this mouthwatering visual. "You hungry? Come on, judging by the smells around the cantine, they actually cooked something good for us tonight."

"...Ja, I'm starving."

He wants to say so much more. That he's happy to survive another day of this senseless carnage. To return to this base, which is the only kind of home he's ever known. To return to you.

You know who he is - or rather, what he is - and yet you still wait for him on the tarmac every time. You still greet him like he actually did something worth praising.

His late father used to have a saying: "As if an angel pissed on your head." That's how your kindness and affection feels to König. Unbelievable stroke of unearned luck.

If he knew how to pray, he'd be on his knees every night, thanking powers that be for this miracle.

"Monty Gator's Green with Envy!" "With his glamrock attitude and star-shaped sunglasses, Monty Gator makes a healthy smoothie that puts all other Pizzaplex drinks in the shade. It's speedy to make, so use your spare time for a quick game of Gator Golf!"

Serves: 2 | Preparation Time: 10 Minutes

What You Will Need: 1 apple, cored 1 banana, peeled 1 tsp grated fresh ginger Small handful of spinach Small handful of kale 1 Tbsp chia seeds 1/4 cucumber 15 mint leaves Juice of 2 limes 3 ice cubes Scant 1 cup/7 oz/200 ml apple juice, plus extra if needed 1 tbsp honey

Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.

If it feels thick, add more apple juice. Serve right away. This is certainly a boost you need first thing in the morning.

"Monty's Mouthwatering Melon Meltdown" "Show that you have a smooth side, too, by serving up this marvelous fruity mocktail. The watermelon, mint, lime, honey, and soda combo comes together perfectly for quite a unique taste. Top work!

Makes: 2 | Preparation Time: 10 Minutes

What You Will Need: 3/4 cup/7 oz/200 g watermelon, seeds removed 1 tbsp honey 5 mint leaves Juice of 2 limes 1 1/4 cups/10 fl oz/300 ml soda water, chilled

To Serve: Ice, for the glasses 2 Tbsp grenadine (optional) Extra mint leaves 2 slices lime 2 watermelon wedges

Put the watermelon in a blender with the honey, mint leaves, and lime juice and blend until smooth. Add the soda water and blend for another couple seconds.

Add ice to two tall glasses, top with the watermelon drink, and pour in the grenadine, if using. Garnish each glass with mint leaves, a watermelon wedge, and a slice of lime. Serve immediately.

As you hover on the edge of consciousness, a gentle touch of cool lips caresses your cheek, nose, chin, and jaw, gradually rousing you from your slumber. The room's dim lighting comes into sharper focus as you slowly open your eyes. A delightful aroma fills your nostrils, and the figure of the black-haired hybrid becomes clearer. He continues to shower you with kisses, a tender gesture that evokes a mixture of protest and pleasure, tempting you to remain in this state of blissful drowsiness. 

“Good evening my little witch, and my even littler witch.  I made something for you.” he whispers softly. 

Reaching over to the bedside table, he picks up a small wooden tray, the handles fitting comfortably in his grasp. Resting in the center is a pristine white ceramic plate adorned with a mouthwatering arrangement of eggs, sausage, and toast. Adjacent to it, a small bowl of freshly cut fruit glistens invitingly, while a glass of what appears to be freshly squeezed orange juice completes the ensemble. Another involuntary yawn escapes you, feeling a peculiar weariness despite just waking up. 

“You made this?” You ask in surprise, watching as he impales a succulent piece of honeydew melon with a fork and brings it to your waiting lips. Gratefully, you accept the morsel, savoring the burst of flavor that elicits a growl of hunger from your stomach, yearning for more. The taste is exquisite, as if the fruit were plucked at the exact moment of perfect ripeness, an unlikely find in the remote, chilly embrace of the Appalachian mountains where you currently were. 

Chan's usually untamed waves are unexpectedly styled, catching you off guard amidst the casual disarray of everyone's appearances during this difficult journey. His hair is slicked up and back, accentuating his features and adding an extra touch of allure to his already enticing presence. It's as if he's transformed into a dish as delectable as the meal before you. 

"Well, sort of..." he begins, scratching the back of his neck with a hint of bashfulness. "The truth is, Felix is a much better cook than I am, and he's the one who made this." Chan's face brightens, eager to contribute. "But hey, I cut the fruit! That counts for something, right?" 

You nod appreciatively, your fingers gently caressing the side of his cheek. "It's the thought that counts the most to me. Thank you for remembering I'm a human." As you speak, he slips a halved strawberry between your awaiting lips, following it with a tender kiss. A playful giggle escapes you, curiosity piqued by his unusually affectionate behavior. 

"You're being so sweet today. Did you do something wrong? What happened?" you inquire, amusement dancing in your voice. 

Chan's lips curl into a half-grin, a hint of mischief twinkling in his eyes. "Nothing at all," he replies, his words laced with a tightness of suppressed laughter. "I'm just in an exceptionally good mood, that's all." 

You savor a bite of sausage, fixing Chan with a quizzical look as you raise an eyebrow. "Since you're in such a good mood, can I ask you something?" 

Chan adjusts himself on the bed, tucking his leg beneath him to face you more directly. "The answer will always be yes," he affirms, his gaze steady and attentive. 

Pausing for a moment to gather your thoughts, you carefully phrase your question. "Would you ever turn me?" 

The weight of your inquiry hangs in the air, evident in the way Chan takes a deep breath before responding. "I'm not sure I can answer that right now because..."  

He trails off, searching for the right words to express the complexity of his feelings. Selfishly, he'd love nothing more than to turn you into a vampire and keep you by his side for eternity. However, there's the added factor of your unborn child. While most parents would relish the idea of watching their child age and live a fulfilling life, no parent wants to face their child's mortality, even in old age. Chan yearns to keep you with him forever, but he considers the potential difficulties of being isolated from the baby during the intense blood cravings of early vampire life. Moreover, the transformation would nullify your witch blood, which you have only recently begun to explore and comprehend the true extent of your power. 

All of that was too much to say right now. 

"I really don't know," he finally admits. Sensing the weight of his uncertainty, he redirects the question back to you, hoping your answer might bring some clarity to his own indecision. “Do you want to be turned?”    

Chewing thoughtfully on a piece of toast, you slowly tilt your head from side to side. "I think so," you reply, casting a glance down at your growing belly, which seems to have visibly expanded overnight. A sigh escapes you, carrying with it the palpable effort it now takes to fill your lungs. "I don't know how to change bodies like Jisung. I'm not even sure I have enough power for it, and the idea of growing old is strange to me..." 

"It can be beautiful, actually," Chan interjects, his voice tinged with a mix of nostalgia and contemplation. "Sure, when I was mortal, I never wanted to grow old. But after living for hundreds of years, you come to realize that it's never going to happen, and... I don't know, there's something to be cherished about the mortal lifespan and how your body evolves with your experiences. I'm stuck like this." 

Pouting playfully, you poke your bottom lip out. "Poor Chan, trapped in the exquisite body of a twenty-something with eternal washboard abs. How ever will you manage?" Tugging at his shirt, you evoke a shy protest from him, accompanied by a laugh that hints at the wild encounters you've shared, even in the midst of a club and in front of his brothers, just a few nights ago. 

“Come on, even if you’re not hungry anymore, you’ve got to feed our baby.” His finger delicately brushes against the tip of your nose, giving you a gentle reminder of the shared responsibility you both carry. Retrieving a succulent piece of fruit, he brings it to your lips once more.

Jisung and Felix find solace on a weathered wooden bench, nestled beside the house, their voices mingling under the glow of the crescent moon. Its pale light casts a soft, dreamlike sheen, enveloping them in an enchanting ambiance as they engage in their heartfelt conversation. 

Felix's eyes drift towards the necklace gracing Jisung's neck, a poignant symbol of treasured memories. With a gentle motion, he gestures towards the precious adornment, prompting Jisung to cradle it delicately between his fingers. 

“Have you taken that off lately?”    

A wistful expression crosses Jisung's face, tinged with a hint of regret. "Nah, I haven't taken it off," he admits, glancing over at the snow-haired vampire. "I've experienced so much in such a short span of time, you know?" 

Felix shifts slightly, his gaze fully focused on his old friend. "Eventually, you'll have to let go," he suggests, his tone gentle yet firm. "Which is worse: losing a few days of memories or sacrificing a whole month's worth?" Turning towards Jisung, he offers his support. "Go ahead, I'm here to help," he affirms with a nod. Jisung feels a surge of apprehension, his brows knitting together in a mix of sorrow and reluctance. Letting out a resigned sigh, he lifts the necklace from his shoulders, realizing the wisdom of heeding the advice of a Gumiho. As the pendant hovers above his head, his wide eyes blink in astonishment, taking in the garden's beauty as if seeing it for the first time. A sense of vulnerability washes over him, accentuated by the realization of his weakened state. 

Felix reaches out, his hand resting gently on Jisung's forearm, attempting to assuage the ancient witch's mounting panic. Despite his comforting words, he can still hear the rapid beats of Jisung's heart, an echo of the fear swirling within him. 

"You're safe, Jisung. Remember, we planned to make stops along the way," Felix explains, his touch serving as an anchor. "This is our first stop, under Lysandra's care. She saved Hyunjin and me from the early morning light. It's only been one night." He squeezes Jisung's forearm, hoping to redirect his attention. "How are you feeling?" he asks, his voice filled with genuine concern. 

“Fucking lost…” Jisung finally collapses back against the wall, “I feel like my mind’s all jumbled up…” he confesses, his mind a chaotic mess. His exhaustion is evident as a yawn interrupts his words, followed by a groan. "So, we're still cursed, huh?" 

Felix nods, a touch of apology in his expression, “We’re not in Abysmora yet, we’ve got a ways to go.”  He glances out into the garden, his gaze sweeping over the sprawling woods beyond the imposing gates. "Can you still conjure?" 

Jisung's heavy eyes shift to the bed of flowers nearby, their delicate petals reaching towards the moonlit sky. Uncertainly, he extends his hand towards them. With a snap, the flowers wither and die, their once vibrant colors turning into lifeless, blackened remnants scattered on the ground. 

“I don’t have any control over it.  I meant to close their petals.  And my fingers–” Jisung admits, frustration tainting his voice. He kicks his foot against the dirt, hoping to alleviate the sting radiating from his fingertips. It reminds him of his earlier days, when he was young and inexperienced in harnessing his conjuring abilities. Jisung attempts to recollect his thoughts, but the mental strain only intensifies his exhaustion. The memory of walking with you outside the coffee shop in Twilight Harbour is all that comes to mind. 

Felix ponders aloud, his voice laced with contemplation. "Seems like things haven't changed much," he muses, recalling his previous observations of Jisung struggling to wield his conjuring powers under Edith's curse. "With the next Full Moon still distant, I almost feel like my old self again. If I were naive enough, I'd believe the curse has lifted entirely." 

“And the others?” 

"Well, the little witch was attacked last night," Felix begins, his tone grave. "In fact, you were the one who sensed it—a demon tried to possess her. But it was strange how she seemed to cast it back into the woods. I don't even think she knows how she did it, but it saved her life and the baby's." 

"She cast it out? Like... with conjure?" Jisung's eyebrows furrow with curiosity. 

Felix shrugs, a hint of uncertainty in his response. "It seemed that way, but I'm not sure how. I haven't been able to figure out what's going on with her conjuring abilities. Some of her mistakes can be attributed to being a beginner—" 

"That doesn't make sense. I shared my mind with her back when we fought the newborns, and she should at least be at an intermediate level," Jisung interjects, his frustration clear. 

"There's no way a witch as old as you has forgotten," Felix chuckles lightly. Jisung possesses great power, but he is not without flaws. "Sharing your mind works for the subconscious in a mortal. Her physical body is primed to handle an immense amount of power, but we've had no time to teach her how to access it intentionally." 

"It's only the second time I've ever done that," Jisung says, his voice softening. "You know what goes on up here," he adds, tapping his temple. "I don't like to share that part of myself." 

"It's valuable wisdom, Jisung. It's the reason why you've managed to defy death so many times. You cheat it so much, you ought to be one of us by now," Felix says, his words carrying a hint of humor. 

Jisung’s memory of being told that he was going to lose his conjure, all of the wisdom that Felix was referring to–it rang so loud in his head that he had to find a way to come back to the present and deal with what he could for now. 

A brief silence envelops them, both lost in their thoughts, for only a few moments. 

"And what about Chan?" Jisung inquires, his voice tinged with curiosity. 

"He's doing really well, actually. I can tell he feels a lot stronger after feeding live the other night," Felix responds, his tone filled with a mix of admiration and surprise. 

Jisung's face contorts in confusion. "Hold on, feeding live? What are you talking about?" 

"Back in Twilight Harbour, we discovered that Santiago owns a vampire den. He hosted us in a private room where we all had the opportunity to feed on live, high-quality humans before the journey. It was quite an experience. But you, of course, decided to opt out," Felix explains, a smirk playing on his lips. 

"No shit I opted out, asshole," Jisung retorts, playfully shoving Felix as they share a laugh. "So, Chan fed live? And the little witch was okay with it I guess?" 

Felix's gaze drifts upwards, fixating on the crescent moon, as recollective thoughts dance across the canvas of his mind's eye—memories he'd rather forget. "Yeah, she was completely fine with it," he responds vaguely, withholding any further details. 

Sensing Felix's evasiveness, the ancient witch grows suspicious and forges ahead with another question.  

"And what about Hyunjin?"

Hyunjin settles himself in front of the hearth, the flickering flames captivating his gaze. His knees are drawn close to his chest as he seeks comfort in the warmth. Tentatively, he extends a hand, relishing the sensation of the gentle heat against his palm, only to retract it and brush his fingers against his own icy vampire skin. 

Footsteps echo behind him, accompanied by the familiar scent that swirls around his senses. Another aroma, stronger and sweeter, catches his attention, compelling him to turn his head and investigate. Standing beside him is Lysandra, holding a crystal goblet filled with thick, dark, warm blood. She lowers it toward him, and he accepts it, inhaling its scent before taking a measured sip. Lysandra settles next to him, her own chalice of red wine in hand. 

"You seem to be feeling better tonight," she remarks, her gaze fixed on him as she sips from her glass. 

"It's astonishing what death can do, isn't it?" Hyunjin replies, taking another sip of the viscous liquid and allowing the remnants to linger on his lips. Lysandra observes him intently before speaking once more. 

"You're quite different from your brothers; you remind me of the vampires from my era. Tell me, Hyunjin, how have you managed to uphold the old ways for so long?" Her lips graze the rim of her glass as she takes a delicate sip. "You are undeniably ancient, over a thousand years old, am I correct?" 

"Two thousand years, to be precise," Hyunjin responds, a hint of intrigue in his voice. He drains the last drop from his glass, finishing the blood. "My soul was trapped in purgatory for a millennium," he explains, a tinge of sorrow lacing his words. "I've only recently returned, just a few months ago." 

Lysandra's nod of comprehension is accompanied by a playful remark. "You probably deserved it," she quips, her tone unwavering as she takes another sip from her glass. 

Hyunjin raises a curious eyebrow, his gaze shifting toward her. However, the demon remains unfazed, savoring her wine. 

"I did," he admits, his voice carrying a tinge of remorse. 

Lysandra rises from her seat, elegantly brushing off her floor-length skirt as she finishes the last of her wine. 

"And what did you learn?" she inquires, her voice filled with intrigue. 

Hyunjin's eyes flicker with a mix of pain and determination. 

“That witches are meant to be murdered first, and questions are to be asked of them later.  I hesitated when I should’ve ripped Edith’s head from her shoulders before she could react.” 

The demon chuckles, genuinely amused by the fierce soul concealed beneath Hyunjin's composed exterior. "And yet, here you are, traveling alongside two of them." 

"The Hans have been loyal to my family for generations," Hyunjin explains, a sense of gratitude softening his voice. "Jisung has known us since before our transformation into vampires. And as for the pretty witch... well, she's with my brother. She's an exception." 

Lysandra leans closer, a sly grin tugging at her lips. "So, witches are to be murdered unless you graciously exempt them?" 

Hyunjin senses the intricate web she's attempting to weave with her words, but he refuses to allow himself to become entangled. He didn’t have the bandwidth to play her game right now. He knows his own identity and the significance of those who hold a place in his life. Lysandra should consider herself fortunate that he has shared this much with her. 

"Thank you for the meal," he utters, expressing his gratitude. With a graceful stretch of his long arms above his head, he stands up. 

"Now, if you'll excuse me," Hyunjin declares, skillfully maneuvering past Lysandra. His hands lightly graze her hips as he smoothly passes through the doorway, leaving the room behind him.   

Just as Hyunjin is about to step outside and release the pent-up turmoil brewing within him, a scent of thick, sulfuric blood infiltrates his senses, freezing him in his tracks. The source emanates from a nearby room, its door closed and presumably locked. Being the most intuitive of the three brothers, Hyunjin understands that loitering in the corridor makes him vulnerable to detection by any demon worth its weight in sulfur. However, he notices that the restroom is adjacent, and by pretending to use it, he can mask his true intentions. As he slips into the bathroom, securing the latch on the door, he turns on the sink, briefly glancing up at the sleek oval mirror adorning the stone wall—a striking modernized touch amidst the rustic ambiance of entwined vines cascading down another wall. 

While gazing into his own mesmerizing baby blue eyes, Hyunjin unintentionally drifts into a trance-like state, his ears attuned to the distant murmurs permeating through the barrier. 

"Okay, whoever it was, they're gone now," whispers Santiago's voice, but the other voice appears distorted, as if submerged in water. Hyunjin struggles to decipher its tone or words, relying on Santiago's voice and contextual clues to piece together the unfolding scene. The overwhelming scent of a powerful demon lingers in the air, indicating that something significant is transpiring. He wonders why his brothers haven't arrived yet. Did they not sense it as keenly as he did? Surely, Christophe would have picked up on the scent. 

"I did. Yes, I did," responds the mysterious voice. 

"Thought we could make it a little further tonight, got out too late," another voice chimes in. 

"I don't think the redhead is going to be the problem, but I sense brewing tension with the hybrid," Santiago confides. 

Hyunjin breaks eye contact with his reflection, shifting his gaze sideways, trying to pinpoint the origin of the distorted sound. The voice seems to pass through some kind of filter. 

"It's deeper than Y/N." 

"Yeah, of course I am. Yeah, uh-huh—yeah," the voices continue their cryptic exchange. 

Hyunjin struggles to fathom that such an elaborate conversation could revolve around a petty love triangle, necessitating this level of magic. Suddenly, his eyes widen in realization as he connects the puzzle pieces, unraveling the truth. 

Santiago is summoning a demon, someone higher up in the hierarchy than he, and he’s communicating with them through a sacrifice.

As you and Chan make your way around the corner to join the others in the garden, Felix is the first to notice your presence. His eyes light up as he greets you, "Look who's up! Did she like the food?" The vibrant garden surrounds the four of you, adorned with exotic plants and flowers, basking under the moon and stars. The atmosphere is filled with a contagious sense of happiness, and you find yourself smiling more than ever before. 

Chan shrugs nonchalantly, playfully concocting an exaggerated tale, "Sorry, brother. She only ate the fruit and tossed the rest out." You nudge him with your fist, rolling your eyes at his fanciful story. "I actually loved it, and I finished it all," you interject, eager to reassure Felix. 

"Yes! I've still got it. I taste-tested it, and it was awful," Felix exclaims, his joy infectious. In this moment, surrounded by the beauty of the garden, you can't help but feel a surge of happiness coursing through your veins. 

However, the tranquility is shattered when you notice Jisung leaning against the wall, seemingly dozing off under the curse that plagues you all. 

“Jisung, hey man,” Chan snaps his fingers in front of the witch’s face.  Jisung reacts with alarming force. He grabs Chan's wrist and twists it mercilessly, causing a sickening snap as Chan collapses in agony, desperately attempting to pry Jisung's grip away. You're torn between the instinct to intervene and the fear for your own safety and the life growing inside you. Panic grips your body, rendering you breathless and unable to think clearly. 

Both Felix and Chan cry out in unison as Jisung's power fries their skin, while his twitching head and fluttering eyelids betray his internal struggle. You stand frozen, overwhelmed by the horrifying scene unfolding before you. 

Suddenly, Jisung stops, and the brothers collapse to the ground. His head turns slowly to meet your gaze, and as he opens his mouth, a black, noxious substance oozes from the corner, distorting his voice into a nightmarish tone.  

"I'm on my way," he rasps. 

As Jisung slumps onto a bench, Lysandra rushes to the scene, closely followed by Hyunjin. She kneels down, first checking Felix's pallid skin, then gently touching Chan's forehead.
