Today on our walk I snapped a couple pictures of the lovely mountain ash in the park, which is in full bloom. I wrote a couplet for my daily poem, and also decided to somehow paint a picture of the blooming tree. I started out thinking it would be a contour drawing again, but there are too many lines already, so I attempted to capture it with color, texture, shading, and overall watercolor paper layer. Brushes: Outline: technical pen Color: Fill from reference layer— except for the white flowers, which are dry ink Shading/Texture: I adapted the dry ink brush— increased the shape spacing and jitter just a bit. The Sitka Mountain Ash is native to the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. It’s beautiful red berries are not really toxic, but definitely inedible in their raw form. There are stories about their use in native traditions, however they are rarely used. Except, by the #bohemianwaxwing , which come every year to Anchorage in the spring time to eat the fermented berries from the fall. I've been tending a little sapling that finally rooted this year. Sprouting beautiful lush green leaves. 🌿 Sadly she hadn't flowered or fruited yet. But I believe she must be looking out for me. 🌿 Yesterday and today a beautiful lush Rowan was presented to me and I was able to harvest the berries. Happy New Year!

I was trying to take a picture of this peacock who had moulted his showy tail feathers when I noticed the even more dramatic show of Sorbus rehderiana (mountain ash) berries at the back of the border! This small tree is originally from China where it is found in forest margins and thickets. It can have fruits that are pinkish white to crimson, here it was fruiting well at the Royal Botanic Garden Kew, London.
