Hey, y'all! Can someone please please tell me about the process for finding the right motorized wheelchair??
I've needed an electric wheelchair for years, and I've finally gotten the right prescription and the wheelchair-accessible housing I need.
But now I need to pick a wheelchair, and I STILL don't even know where to start.
The main issue is that I have no way of trying out different models of chair, and so I have no way of knowing what will and won't hurt my back - and so I ALSO have no way of knowing if I need a custom wheelchair or not.
I live in the United States in a major metropolitan area, and my insurance will ONLY pay for one chair, so as far as I know, it needs to be the right one on the first try. (Unless there's a trial-and-return policy? I have no idea. I have Medicare and Medicaid.)
I feel like there must be some kind of specialist who can help me find the right chair, but no healthcare provider I've seen has had that kind of expertise.
Where do I find these people? What do I do?? How can I find a place that allows me to try out different chairs?? Literally any advice is appreciated. Thank you in advance. <3

made a new protest sign for my motorized wheelchair. people tend to gawk at the external side of the elevating leg rests the most, which is rude but also making it a prime spot for a protest sign. using ableism to my advantage I suppose... [IMAGE DESCRIPTIONS: 1: photo. motorized wheelchair. protest sign on external side of elevating legs rests. sigh description: horizontal rectangle. Thick white border. Within that a red rectangle with a horizontal pink triangle where the point is facing left. The pink triangle is a bit more than half the width of the graphic. The main text, modern white font except silent (yellow), genocide (green), fascism (green) each line has a black rectangle behind it that is horizontal. The text reads don't be silent in times of genocide & fascism. right of The text quote in times of genocide end quote there is a watermelon slice illustration a symbol of Palestinian liberation. & to the left of the lines genocide and fascism there is an image of an orange with a yellow circle & line going diagonally aka no orange as in no orange fascist Underneath the larger text, same font same style of white text with black rectangle behind it but in a smaller size it reads leave no oppressed groups behind including the disability community. 2: horizontal rectangle. a short but chatty video where I talk about being neurodivergent & thus sometimes I'm sensitive to light. wearing sunglasses helps, but I've found as I start to go out again (now that I have the wheelchair), that this can be misunderstood. [IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Video thumbnail. A horizontal rectangle. Colorful background which consists of a variety of images based on the wheelchair symbol. To the left is a photo of myself looking contemplative as my hand is on my chin. I'm wearing a red t-shirt, a black and white horizontal striped arm warmer, oversized black rims cat eyeglasses, and a rainbow flower crown headband on my brown hair which is being pushed back by the headband. To the left of me on top of the collage are three rectangles with texting them. The first one a bit diagonal on top black with white text reads disability and.. the second and larger rectangle which accepts most of the space reads neurodivergent accommodations and misunderstandings. ( I'm not trying to be rude...) There's a white small diagonal rectangle in the mid-right-hand corner that reads plus wheelchair update. And lastly, there is a thin black rectangle towards the bottom right that reads Rebel Wheels NYC]

did some wheelchair driving practice in the garage! hard to do in a small space but i'm figuring it out. what strikes me is just how... not-exhausted i feel. it reminds me of the first time i got a wheelchair escort at the doctor, like. i had come to expect a certain level of exhaustion after an activity, but using the chair made me feel noticeably less exhausted. and today, i was just moving around for ~10, 20 mins and if i had been walking i'd feel like crap right now, but i dont.
i do need to learn to unclench my thighs though. 😬.

Finding the Best Electric Wheelchair for Sale: A Comprehensive Guide
Finding the right electric wheelchair can be a daunting task, especially with the myriad of options available on the market today. Electric wheelchairs, also known as powered wheelchairs, are designed to enhance mobility and independence for individuals with limited physical capabilities.
This comprehensive guide aims to help you navigate the process of selecting the best electric wheelchair for your needs, whether you're considering an electric wheelchair for sale or exploring various models, ensuring that you make an informed decision.
Understanding Electric Wheelchairs
Electric wheelchairs are motorised mobility devices that allow users to move independently without the physical exertion required by manual wheelchairs. They are powered by batteries and controlled via a joystick or other control mechanisms. The primary types of electric wheelchairs include:
Rear-Wheel Drive: These models have two large wheels at the back, providing stability and comfort, especially on uneven terrain.
Mid-Wheel Drive: Featuring wheels positioned in the middle, these chairs offer excellent manoeuvrability and a tight turning radius, making them ideal for indoor use.
Front-Wheel Drive: With the drive wheels at the front, these chairs excel at overcoming obstacles but may require some getting used to in terms of steering.
Key Factors to Consider
When searching for the best electric wheelchair, several factors should be taken into account:
1. User Needs and Lifestyle
Consider how you plan to use the wheelchair. Will it primarily be for indoor use, outdoor adventures, or a combination of both? Understanding your lifestyle will help you choose a model that meets your specific requirements.
2. Weight Capacity
Different electric wheelchairs have varying weight capacities. Ensure that the model you choose can comfortably accommodate your weight, as this will affect performance and safety.
3. Battery Life and Range
Battery life is crucial for ensuring that you can use your wheelchair throughout the day without needing frequent recharges. Look for models that offer a sufficient range to meet your daily activities.
4. Portability
If you plan to travel with your wheelchair, consider its weight and whether it can be easily folded or disassembled for transport. Lightweight models are often more convenient for travel.
5. Comfort and Adjustability
Comfort is paramount, especially if you will be using the wheelchair for extended periods. Look for features such as padded seating, adjustable armrests, and footrests to enhance your comfort.
6. Safety Features
Safety should never be compromised. Check for features such as anti-tip designs, automatic braking systems, and visibility lights to ensure safe operation.
Exploring Features
Electric wheelchairs come with a variety of features that can enhance usability and comfort:
Joystick Control: Most electric wheelchairs are equipped with a joystick for easy navigation. Some models offer alternative control options for users with limited hand mobility.
Suspension Systems: A good suspension system can improve ride quality, especially on uneven surfaces.
Storage Options: Consider whether you need storage compartments or baskets for carrying personal items while on the go.
Trying Before You Buy
Whenever possible, it is advisable to test drive different models before making a purchase. This hands-on experience allows you to assess comfort, manoeuvrability, and ease of use. Many suppliers offer trial periods or in-store demonstrations, which can be invaluable in making your decision.
Budget Considerations
Electric wheelchairs can vary significantly in price, depending on the features and technology included. While it may be tempting to opt for the cheapest option, consider the long-term benefits of investing in a quality wheelchair that meets your needs. Additionally, explore funding options, such as insurance coverage or grants, which may help offset costs.
Maintenance and Support
After purchasing an electric wheelchair, regular maintenance is essential to ensure its longevity and performance. Familiarise yourself with the manufacturer's guidelines for care and maintenance. Additionally, consider the availability of customer support and service options in your area, as this can be crucial if you encounter any issues with your wheelchair.
Community and Resources
Engaging with communities of electric wheelchair users can provide valuable insights and support. Online forums, local support groups, and social media platforms can be excellent resources for sharing experiences, tips, and recommendations.
Final Thoughts
Finding the best electric wheelchair for your needs involves careful consideration of various factors, including your lifestyle, comfort, and budget. By understanding the different types of electric wheelchairs available and evaluating your specific requirements, you can make an informed decision that enhances your mobility and independence.
Remember to take advantage of trial opportunities and community resources to ensure you choose the right model for your needs.

Can anyone who uses a wheelchair (especially a motorized chair) please explain to me what the process was like to find the right chair?
I live in America and it seems that the doctors just want me to order one online without trying it at all, which seems insane for such a very very specific and very expensive medical device.
In order to find an office chair that didn't hurt my back, I went to every single furniture store in Chicago. So it seems wild that the selection process for something way more expensive and important would be so vague and confusing. I'm really scared that I'll get the wrong one.
How do you get the right wheelchair??????
#wheelchair users#wheelchair user#new wheelchair user#I'm finally about to hopefully move into housing that would allow a wheelchair to go in and out#i have needed a chair for 5 years and have been struggling painfully and enormously without one#and now I'm close to getting it and the process is not at all clear#original#help#crippled#cripple punk#disabled#wheelchair#motorized wheelchair#electric wheelchairs#mobility aids#electric wheelchair#powerchair

I was proud of several things on this one. The wheelchair, the leaves, her face at that upward angle. I think she’s enjoying herself.

it's easy to miss if you're able-bodied and extremely sheltered, but the fact that all architectural "accessibility" is designed with the (false) presumption that the disabled person in need of the accommodation will have an able bodied person to assist them, is a glaring oversight and failure of design, in my opinion
#vasira rambles#like those steep ramps for wheelchairs#idk if you've rolled a wheelchair uphill as the person in the wheelchair but it's an exhausting and difficult feat#but u can just slap a ramp onto a building and call it accessible#but it's only accessible if the wheelchair user has a motor on their chair or another person to assist#and that sucks#like ideally we all live to die of old age right#statistically in that case we will all become disabled at some point#but the way architecture and city planning is built has very little regard for this#and we are all worse off for it
