The words registered and April felt her heart drop to her stomach and leant on the kitchen counter in front of her for support. “Jackson? What happened to Jackson?”

“He is okay, April. But there was an incident during one of his ride alongs with Ben in the PRT. He's getting treated right as we speak.”

April cast a look over at Harriet, but she was still coloring, unaware of anything amiss. “An incident? What exactly happened, Bailey?”

There was a long pause. “A drug addict held them up for drugs. There was some kind of altercation and he was shot in the leg.”

At the word shot, April was transported back a decade, to falling over her best friend's dead body. She couldn't stop herself from picturing that it was Jackson instead before slamming closed that train of thought. Bailey said he was okay. He was fine.

“And is Ben okay?”

“Ben is a little shaken but not hurt at all. And Avery is getting pampered by every single nurse in the place and being grouchy about the attention.”

April smiled at that, sounded about right.

“Thank you for telling me, Bailey. I appreciate it.”

“Not a problem, I know how you two are. I've got to go. Give it half an hour then you should be right to call him, he's still getting stitched up.”

They said their goodbyes then hung up and April immediately went over to Harriet, picked her up and held her close, breathing in her comforting scent.
