Listen, unfortunately we all know that in canonverse this is a very teetery tripod. Nielan go into it thinking they have the most solid leg and don't notice the cracks. Nieyao is a bundle of splinters held together with duct tape and wire. Xiyao I think actually winds up being the most solid leg until Nie Huaisang takes a hacksaw to it. It's just a mess.

In a modern AU they're honestly all very solid, even if they're each looking at the leg they're not a part of going "dunno how the fuck it works, but it does."

Wangningxian

Lan Wangji and Wen Ning, left to their own devices, will enjoy a quiet afternoon of reading, handcrafts, or other parallel play.

They don't return to the table. It had been a stupid idea anyway, Wen Ning thinks; too serious, too tribunal. Wei Ying doesn't like to talk about it, like he doesn't like to talk about anything that's really fucked him up, but he knows family dinners for him growing up weren't the most comfortable affairs. Instead he and Lan Zhan budge over on the couch, though there's already enough room (there's always enough room, if it's for Wei Ying), and Wei Ying, tripping on his tiptoes the way he does when he's nervous, perches on the L-shaped edge of the cushion. The reflective vest Lan Zhan has bullied him into wearing whenever he goes out night-running dangles off one shoulder, coquetry in neon orange. 

He is too far away. 

Wen Ning extends a leg and prods at Wei Ying with his toes, making Wei Ying yelp, ticklish, and for a moment nearly smile, until Wei Ying gives in to what he clearly wants and scoots up against Wen Ning's side, the third overlapping piece in their tableau. A very wiggly tableau it will be, indeed, now that Wei Ying has joined it. They would not have it any other way. "So you guys kiss now," Wei Ying says, into the hole in the leggings over Wen Ning's thigh. Wen Ning keeps thinking he should fix that, and then forgetting. "How long has that been going on?"

"Just tonight," Wen Ning says, making his tongue go slowly. Behind him Lan Zhan makes a small noise, negative; one of his hands withdraws from Wen Ning's waist and reaches for his phone. They wait while he types, Wen Ning looking at the contrast between Wei Ying's cheek and his own black spandex, Wei Ying staring into the crack where the cushions meet the back of the couch. He seems like he's worn himself out; he curls around Wen Ning's leg like it's a stuffed toy.

It is times like this that Wen Ning is reminded of how much slighter Wei Ying is, than either himself or Lan Zhan. He imagines lifting his leg and carrying Wei Ying up atop it, like a fragile sparrow, hollow-boned, fluffed up against the cold. "Almost nine days," the lady in Lan Zhan's phone says. "When Wen Ning brought you back from the library. Kissed him then. Did not plan it. But." His fingers have stilled; Lan Zhan types with one whole hand, cradling the phone in his other, instead of with his two thumbs like everyone else. It's hopelessly endearing: our little old-fashioned man, Wei Ying calls him, and then tugs at his hair or tweaks his ear. "But you liked it? Mm. Can't blame you for that." Wen Ning can feel the flex of Wei Ying's jaw as he mumbles. A small hum like the vibration of a string starts at the top of Wen Ning's scalp and travels down through his body. The nausea has not left him, or the guilt, but Wen Ning plunges his hands into that hum and lets it fill all his corners. Now that they are speaking, it is better; though they've barely begun. The waiting was the hardest part. It's never as bad as you think it will be, he tells himself. He bites his tongue to get moisture back into his mouth. "We did- we did-, we haven't done anything between then," he says. Lan Zhan's arms tighten around him. Wen Ning leans back against him gratefully. "Um. When we went to that weird cafe with Lan Zhan's brother? That was what we were talking about." Behind him he feels Lan Zhan nod. "I wondered," Wei Ying says. He curls tighter, the movement like a brace before a leap. "Were you going to tell me?" Oh: Wen Ning's lungs have been stolen away. One of Lan Zhan's hands leaves him again, this time to reach out and press down on the top of Wei Ying's head. It's a bad angle; he has to strain, and even so he mostly gets the end of his ponytail. Wei Ying hides his face in the crook of Wen Ning's knee. Wen Ning has to blink rapidly and swallow, twice when the first time isn't enough. He's not sure what he means to say; what comes out is clumsier and more honest than he wants. "I didn't want you to feel left out. I'm sorry." Against his neck, Lan Zhan grunts agreement. He's petting the rough-chopped ends of Wei Ying's hair, the ends sticking up between his knuckles and then smoothing flat again. "Just," Wei Ying says. It's difficult to hear him, pressed as far as he is into Wen Ning's leg, but Wen Ning doesn't imagine he or Lan Zhan are right now giving him anything but their complete intent focus. "You have to tell me if you don't want me around any more, okay? That's rule, ah, rule eighty-nine of being my friend." He laughs, his shoulders twitching. Wen Ning needs to hug him so badly it's rooted his ass to the tasteful cream-colored microfiber. "Okay," he says, chokes on it. "Yeah. D-deal. Definitely want you here though. Right Lan Zhan?" "Mn," Lan Zhan rumbles emphatically. Wei Ying droops. He goes from light upon Wen Ning's knee to hundredweight, sinking like a stone in water. Somehow, Wen Ning manages to curl his leg and reach his arms and get Wei Ying bundled up against them both, his hair splaying out over Wen Ning's throat and his sharp wrists tucked up against Lan Zhan's sternum. He's still laughing, a little, and Wen Ning listens carefully in case the tears he can hear behind them start to spill over. "'S funny," he's saying. Wen Ning slings an arm over his him and wraps even closer. "I thought, hah, I thought out of all of us it would be me who would fuck up and accidentally kiss someone, but wow, Lan Zhan! Who knew you had it in you!" His body can't seem to decide whether it wants to tremble or to sag. It tries to do both, with different parts. Wen Ning looks up from under his eyelashes to see how Lan Zhan reacts to Wei Ying's implication that he'd kiss him, and sees Lan Zhan staring solemnly back at him, the same emotion reflected. He frowns and reaches to set Lan Zhan's hand on Wei Ying's hip where his has been. Lan Zhan resists him. "Like, you guys are my best friends, you know? My best friends, and I've told you this but I mean it, and if you two want to go off and kiss I'm really really happy to let you do that I don't want to get in the way and make you not want to be around me any more because I'm--" Lan Zhan is trying to communicate something to Wen Ning with a frustrated glare and the minute tilt of his chin. Wen Ning has an inkling what it is, and staunchly ignores him, because despite the warm-butter feeling spreading over him Lan Zhan is wrong. "--and I was like, to myself, what if it doesn't break everything? But obviously that's absurd, I always break everything, and--" "Wei Ying," Wen Ning says, in desperation, as Lan Zhan gives up all pretence of fighting fair and begins attempting to shove Wei Ying completely into Wen Ning's lap. He knows Wen Ning won't try to pull away when Wei Ying needs to be held, the bastard. "If you, when you, you, you, you-- kiss Lan Zhan! Please! He wants you to!" It is an uncomfortable position to be frozen in, for the beats that follow. Wei Ying's elbow is digging into the soft part under Wen Ning's ribs, and Lan Zhan's ankle is somehow twisted underneath them all. There's a heavy thud from the apartment above; as the three of them clutch at each other and stare, barely breathing, they hear harried footsteps and the muffled tones of a child being scolded. "Ooh, someone's in trouble," Wei Ying says. And then: "Wait, no. I meant. What?" Lan Zhan is glowering in abject betrayal at the wall over Wen Ning's right shoulder. His ears are slowly turning pink. "Hhhn," Wei Ying says, like a untied rubber balloon, and then-- frantically, scrambling over their tangled legs-- It is not that Wen Ning isn't jealous of what they have, Wei Ying and Lan Zhan. It is rather, to be witness to so wonderful a thing feels like a privilege. When Lan Zhan's hands come up to frame Wei Ying's face, when Wei Ying's lips part, it is more than beautiful; it is necessary. Wen Ning can feel himself grinning, wide and goofy, even as he loses feeling in his calves. It's just-- it's been such a long time, and he's-- he's happy for them. He's so happy. He's...crying? "Oh," Wei Ying says, "Oh, oh, oh," and twists in a violent motion, and Wen Ning is, for the third time in his most immediate history, completely blindsided by the knowledge of a mouth over his own. I haven't brushed my teeth, he thinks, which is a nonsense thing to think, because he did brush his teeth this morning, of course, and he hasn't even started getting ready for bed yet, and also, he had Lan Zhan's tongue in his mouth not even an hour ago, and he had Lan Zhan's tongue in his mouth and now he has Wei Ying's-- He becomes dimly aware that Lan Zhan is stroking his arm, where it's curved to trap Wei Ying flush against his chest. Wen Ning makes the executive decision to panic about this later. There are too many things happening right now to keep track of freaking out. For example: the discovery that brushing the tips of his fingers over the soft skin behind Wei Ying's ear makes him gasp and shudder all over. "Lan Zhan," Wen Ning says, amazed. It's too momentous a thing to keep to himself. "Look." He does it again, and they both watch Wei Ying's eyelids flutter. It feels like there's a volcano under his skin. "M-maybe we should stop and talk ab, about this like adults," he says. It comes out breathless. He does not want to stop and talk about this like adults. "Nonononononono," Wei Ying says, hands shooting out to fasten on their shoulders. "We did talking, now is kissing, can we do more of the kissing? I like kissing. I like kissing you. Both. Both of you." His face screws up. "You might have a point. I think I might pass out? But in a good way?" Lan Zhan looks deeply alarmed. He and Wen Ning maneuver Wei Ying so he has his head between his knees, their hands meeting over the bony seam of his spine. Lan Zhan squeezes Wen Ning's fingers. The volcano turns into a horde of extremely peppy wind-up toys. Or maybe this is what butterflies feel like? "Running," Lan Zhan says, gathering the strands of Wei Ying's hair back from his face. It takes Wen Ning a moment to understand; in his defense, he's fairly certain his brain has been forcibly disconnected. "Right, um, electrolytes. And sugar." He peels himself away (Wei Ying makes a pathetic noise, which twinges at Wen Ning's heart, but he's in good hands) and nearly faceplants on the edge of the rug as pins and needles shoot up his legs. Because Lan Zhan is a good and righteous man, he has the kind of orange juice that's full-sugar, and without bits. Wen Ning pours them all glasses just to be on the safe side, and also takes the opportunity to stick his head in the freezer and think thoughts that are not about confirming his love for his two closest friends via double fellatio. When he returns Wei Ying is sitting upright, Lan Zhan's arm around him. He refuses to drink until Wen Ning is cuddled up with them. See, Wen Ning's therapist says, as he tucks himself against the long line of Lan Zhan's body, Lan Zhan's eyebrows knitted as he rewinds the movie back to the beginning of the scene the left off on. Wei Ying slaps indiscriminately across the limbs within reach when Lan Zhan reaches the right spot; he makes the whole couch rock, and Wen Ning thinks he might burst, from loving them. Not as bad as you thought, at all. So much better.

In the same everybody lives universe as WangNingXian marriage, Lan Xichen says “you know what?? If Lan Wangji can have two husbands, I can have two husbands too!!!” And who does Lan Xichen decide to marry? His own fucking sworn brothers. At some point he realized that the whole sworn brothers thing was just a cop out, and what he REALLY wanted was to get both Nie Mingjue and Meng Yao in bed and have them sworn to him forever. Kinda like marriage. How funny. 

So he goes to Nie Mingjue and he says “Me, you, and Meng Yao, sworn in holy matrimony, what do you think?” and Nie Mingjue says “Fuck it, why not” Because despite some of the fucked up things Meng Yao has done (and no he’s not Jin Guangyao, because the Jins are stinky! WIG!) he still loves his little twink and he regrets how things fell out with them. And since Meng Yao is always down to get absolutely WRECKED by both of these men at any time or place, he agrees (oh and he like loves them?? like a lot, but he may not say it).

Lan Wangji becomes sect leader, Lan Xichen moves to Qinghe, and Qinghe Nie becomes THE most well run sect in all of cultivation history. With the power of TWO sect leaders and mastermind Meng Yao there’s absolutely nothing that can stop them. Anyone who tries??? EVISCERATED. You’ve never seen such happy and powerful individuals drunk off the passion of being ‘THAT BITCH’. They cultivate into immortality and live happily ever after. The End.

Ok now I'm kinda cheating with this cause wei wuxian's in this twice but ningxian and wangningxian (even though I can't really tell where I am with ningxian yet but it's cute)

1. Wen ning is basically wei wuxian's most second loyal person next to wangji and I think he deserves a kiss every once in a while from wei wuixan (if not the lips then at least his forehead or cheek)

2. Why let wen ning be the third wheel when wei wuxian has two hands y'know? Also I think wangji can tolerate wen ning the most out of anybody. Though he did slap him once...he just has to learn to stop being jealous of the fierce corpses in wei wuxian's life

Also I really hope I'm not the only one who has thought about all 3 of them raising sizhui at least once

It's always so difficult to pick an ultimate favourite anything - my 'fav' bookmark tag on ao3 has 26 items. Can I give 26 favourites?

But if I narrow it down to the fav that I've thought about the most since reading (which... probably still includes three or four fics), and that had the biggest influence on me, I'll have to come back again to throughline by lunatea.

It's no secret that this modern AU WangNingXian case fic was a big part of my inspiration to write Confluence. The ending broke my heart so badly it took me a week to gather my thoughts enough to leave a comment, and it just ticked so many of my boxes.

U - when did you start writing fanfic?

I wrote some as a teenager but not in any serious capacity. Aside from a few once-offs back then my "real" start date would be April 2020.

T - when did you start reading fanfic?

... also April 2020 - MDZS is really the first time I've been interested and invested in a franchise in a way that I wanted content like that. I'm generally content to experience a story as it is and then move on, even stories I loved a lot.

H - original characters or no?

For the most part I'm in fandom to explore the characters themselves, and just don't personally enjoy OCs (either reading about them or writing them - nothing against those who do, though!). That said I have added a pretty substantial one to my longfic WBKB and I love her a lot so it's not any kind of rule, just a trend.

6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?

oh that’s hard i think! i’m usually willing to be convinced on most things ahaha. so nothing that i hated that i was convinced on, but something that I had difficulties with--maybe.... wangningxian? because i really like one-sided ningxian (represent) but sometimes i want to read happy things ;~; so it’s like, well, i want wangxian to be happy. but ningxian? but. hm. it’s hard to sell me on wangningxian without a certain amount of suspension of disbelief on my part bc lwj is so single-minded, but! i have read some really sweet wangningxian that i like very much, so that’s really nice! :D

i also usually have a LOT of aversion towards any “wwx is jfm’s bio son” aus, but i DID read one where he was jfm’s bio son by trans!wcz, and THAT was like okAY now you have my Attention 👀

16. If you could change anything in the show [CQL], what would you change?

no censorship 😩 like, not just for wangxian, but for really spectacularly vicious wwx and nuanced jgy. also for blood pool, dead!wen ning etc. no fucking yin iron!!!

but! since that’s kind of a facetious answer: i would have done more intersplicing of past and present timelines. i think part of the power of mdzs is the slow revelation of things as events converge, and while I like how CQL did it in that like, once the worst was over, the worst was over--i think that the converging timelines is really excellent. discovering who these people are that we’re rooting for as they’re orbiting each other? god. i love that. it gives a real sense of like, all of those terrible things? they are in the past, even as they are very real. mdzs i think is ultimately about moving forward from the things that hurt you, so I really like that we have a stronger grasp of the way we are In The Present, but the past is right there next to you trying to pull you back. but we still make it out. you know? idk. i love that structure.

SONG LAN:

Sexuality Headcanon: oh he is demisexual all the way! I can’t really picture him really being interested until he meets and forms a bond with xxc.

Gender Headcanon: Song Lan was always called a boy and had he/him used for him so I think for most of his life we was like “guess I’m a boy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯” and then again, met xxc who changes presentation and pronouns more than he changes hanfu (xxc that’s gross do ur laundry pls!) and Song Lan is like “ :o you can do that?” And xxc is like “??? Of course you can? Anyway please use they/them for me today I am in a mood” and so Song Lan is experimenting with it now!

A ship I have with said character: songxiao first and foremost! But I also like him with Lan Xichen and Wen Ning! ... Song Lan is pretty much my fandom bicycle. I feel like Song Lan is the type of guy that needs someone to look out for and coddle, so he gets along well with characters who would want that or need it, ie. xxc loves the attention and wen ning and lan xichen both need and deserve to be coddled for once so. >_>

A BROTP I have with said character: I like to think he keeps correspondence with lwj considering PARALLELS and imo he and mianmian would be bros too I think!!!

A NOTP I have with said character: ... I honestly don’t think I really have one? I’ve never seen a character that I didn’t think could have SOMETHING with him in some way. Even Xue Yang! Xue Yang has a ~thing~ for him (hatred or otherwise) that inspires a kind of passion and Song “obviously has the biggest dick in the series and you can’t tell me otherwise” Lan is ok with indulging it bc he has a thing for subduing him without having to be called on it. ...I forget where I was going with this... anyway no notps here! Song Lan harem rights!

A random headcanon: Song Lan CAN NOT handle spicy food in any way. Refuses to even touch it. He gives all spicy dishes to Xiao Xingchen who destroyed his taste buds with too much spicy food years ago.

General Opinion over said character: Song Lan is my favorite character in the series and by this point I think everyone knows. My ONE qualm is that a lot of us Song Lan fans tend to put him on a pedestal so to speak, and we can forget that he has flaws. Like he’s pretty vengeful and angry! We see that! It’s what ends up accidentally driving xxc away and caused his downfall at yi city! But aside from that... I love him and I will never not love him ❤️

WEN NING:

Sexuality Headcanon: Disnt really care either way until he met Personal Closet Key Wei Wuxian, then was all “oh don’t you just love when men? 🥰”

Gender Headcanon: HE 👏 IS 👏 TRANSMASC 👏 and wen qing does all his gender affirmative surgeries bc she doesn’t trust anyone else to do them properly and her baby bro can have whatever he wants!

A ship I have with said character: ningxian has a place always in my heart and tbh is actually my preferred wwx ship, but I like a little wangningxian also! Basically wen ning harem rights also. He deserves as many boyfriends as he wants.

A BROTP I have with said character: he and yanli would have been BEST FRIENDS were it not for shenanigans. They have similar personalities and they need friends!

A NOTP I have with said character: again, wen ning gets as many boyfriends as he wants. I suppose if pressed I wouldn’t ship him with any jins just bc ... yeah. But anything is possible? I’ve seen wen ning/Jin zixuan done before.

A random headcanon: the only reason he and wen qing lived for as long as they did is bc wen ning used to be a mama’s boy once upon a time and learned all mama wen’s recipes. Wen qing can’t cook and would poison them all. Seriously... au where he and yanli swap soup recipes when????

General Opinion over said character: I also love wen ning a whole lot! I feel like trying to find content specifically just for him as a main character like for fic is kinda hard tho? Like... he takes a backseat whenever wwx is involved unless you are digging for ningxian SPECIFICALLY. Which is understandable since he is a supporting character, but I think he deserves MORE.

How I feel about this character:

Jiang Yanli: ULTIMATE EXAMPLE OF CHARACTERS WHO DESERVED BETTER. Jiang Yanli is everything. She is the it girl. She is my favorite female character except for MAYBE A-Qing. She makes me wish I had a big sister, y’all. God, I wish she had gotten to meet her son - like, actually meet him, and get to know him. (When she died, he was... what, a year old at most? Not MUCH personality there, gotta say.) I wish she had gotten to grow old, man. Jiang Yanli was born to be a grandma, and the fact that she never got to be. Is upsetting. My girl is artistic, she is smart, she is brave (standing up to Jin Zixun!!!! A man who is 100% stronger than her!!!!! From a much stronger and wealthier sect!!!!) and GOD is she kind. Yanli, my beloved <3

Wei Wuxian: He is the main character and he is the main character for a REASON. This man? A mess, through and through. He is also a genius and he will not let you forget it, nor will he let you forget how SEXY he is. Yes Wei Wuxian we know your ass is fat you don’t need to remind me. I love this freaky lil necromancer. So sexy of him to invent that. He doesn’t have a SINGLE uncomplicated relationship, no, that’s too easy. He doesn’t even get to have a simple relationship with A-Yuan, because of course he doesn’t. Wei Wuxian is a flawed man who has committed atrocities and kindnesses in turn. He is simultaneously a grave robber who desecrates corpses on the regular, and ALSO the kind of dude who will attempt (and succeed) to resurrect a guy who he barely knows, even though it seems hopeless, because he is duty-bound. He takes his debt to the Wen siblings so, so seriously, he takes so much so seriously and that is why he doesn’t put effort into, for example, naming his weapons, or other bullshit. He has priorities, man. I love him. 

Romantic Ships:

Jiang Yanli: I’m a slut for xuanli, my token straight ship. Half of it is because I just really love Jin Ling, and if they weren’t a thing... he wouldn’t be either. But ALSO: Jin Zixuan resents her not because she’s her, but because he is being forced to marry her. Once that pressure is pulled off (though honestly? Not completely, because let’s be real - Madame Jin was probably pushing for that marriage all through Sunshot) and he gets the chance to... actually get to know her? He falls in love, y’all. I like to think Jiang Yanli, softhearted as she is, made him work to woo her as much as she was able. Gotta put effort into Jiang Yanli, Zixuan, it’s what she DESERVES! Other than them, yanqing is very good! I read some fics where she married Lan Xichen, which was lovely, and then there’s that series where she gets married to Jin Guangyao instead of Zixuan (though I can’t remember the name of it, rip.) There are very many options, for Yanli, and all of them good. give her a harem

Wei Wuxian: Wangxian goes without saying - they’re the core of the series, after all, if I didn’t like them at least a little... there wouldn’t be a point in me running a blog for this series, would there? Ningxian, unrequited or otherwise, is also very sexy. Wangningxian, too, and, as mentioned in the ask about Lan Xichen, I am into xixian! Xiaoxian also slaps - I’ve written a blurb for them, and plan on expanding it into something larger... at some point. Also, there are some really great (though DEFINITELY not for the light-hearted) xuexian fics out there, if you’re interested.

Non-Romantic Ships/BroTPS:

Jiang Yanli: Yanli and her brothers, Yanli and Wen Ning, Yanli and Everyone, Basically. Everyone should be friends with Jiang Yanli. She is very friend-shaped, and honestly? If everyone was her friend, a lot of shit would’ve gone down better. 

Wei Wuxian: I think the dynamic between Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, and Jiang Yanli is just. So fuckin’ delicious. There are layers of love and devotion and propriety and conflicts of all of those things and GOD. I love them. I also thing Wei Wuxian should’ve been a menace as a child on the streets with Xue Yang. I would’ve liked to see it. Nie Huaisang is also a Very Good Bro, who I love him with immensely (and also think he should kiss a little bit)

Unpopular Opinion:

Jiang Yanli: Not to NSFW, but a lot of y’all seem to think she’s the kinkiest bitch on the block, and honestly? I don’t see it. I think her favorite position is missionary. I am so sorry to the pegging stans I just don’t think she has the core strength to make that good.

Wei Wuxian: HE. IS. MORALLY. GRAY. AT. BEST. Particularly during Sunshot and the immediate aftermath, but honestly, Wei Wuxian is not the liberator of the people, or something. He is a very talented man who, when he feels it is the right thing to do, will do anything - and what is right can be subjective and situational. He’s his own villain in a lot of ways, and the villain of many other people’s stories. Honestly, I can’t blame people for being afraid of him, or trying to put limits on what he can do - unchecked power is always bad. Always. Even when someone I like has it. 

What I wish would happen/had happened in canon:

Jiang Yanli: Uh. I wish she had fucking LIVED? I get WHY she had to die, so Jin Ling could... be Jin Ling, and Jiang Cheng would finally have something he really, truly couldn’t forgive Wei Wuxian for. I get that her death is the final nail in his coffin, or whatever. But seeing her simply get INJURED for him would’ve been enough, I think? I don’t think she needed to die, is what I’m saying, and I think MDZS could’ve been even more interesting, narratively speaking, if she hadn’t. Then again, I’m a Xuan Lu simp, so it is possible I simply wish we had had More Of Her.

Wei Wuxian: Therapy, as always. Otherwise, he’s pretty much got it made? Man came back from the dead, got some old friends back, solved a mystery, found out his sort-of son he raised in a graveyard for a while wasn’t dead at all, and then got married to the love of his life. He’s good on that front. Reconciliation with Jiang Cheng is really all I want, past that.

Wen Ning for the character ask (I know you like him)

YES AND I'M GLAD YOU ASKED, IN THIS ESSAY I WILL

How I feel about this character: Is it weird that he's literally my favorite character in the MDZS universe? Am I weird? He's not the most interesting or well-written character, but he brings me so much joy and comfort. I think of him daily. Hourly. Am I weird? Maybe I just love the "sheep in wolf's clothing" trope so much. Maybe I gravitate towards non-human characters in any fantasy setting. Maybe I just find him weirdly relatable. Idk. I love him. I physically cannot shut up about him. I have like 8 unpublished drafts and somehow they're all about Wen Ning. I want to talk about him at any given moment. (That’s your official permission to scream anything about him in my inbox, btw.) Am I weird? And my serious thoughts about his personality are pretty much summed up in my other post.

Ok, let me just... hide the rest of it under the cut, because I have a lot to say about him.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: NingXian is valid and everyone is sleeping on their ship. (I get why, the drama is more popular than the novel or donghua/manhua, and while CQL!Wen Ning is precious and amazing, he has Zero Sexy Vibes in comparison to his animated version. Who is one of the most attractive characters there, in my humble opinion. Definitely in the top 5. Please check him out.). And I think they have a very nice dynamic, and their story is both romantic and heartbreaking. Except it’s probably going to end very sadly in a world where Lan Wangji exists and is a jealous bitch. I respect WangNingXian though (Wei Wuxian has two hands, indeed), but most of the content I've seen explores their already established relationship? And I feel like WN and LWJ need to... get to know each other first. I think they definitely going to have so much Respect for each other post-canon, and they can develop a close relationship, but I don't see exactly how yet. ChengNing is fine, but it HAS to be enemies-to-lovers for me to enjoy it. Again, they have a lot of stuff that needs sorting out, and I want to see it first.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Wei Wuxian, yes, because their friendship is amazing. TBH their relationship is more meaningful if you view it as platonic and not romantic, even if I like the ship. Their fates are so tied to each other in so many ways, and they complement each other so well. WWX is someone who managed to turn WN’s life upside down in a colorful explosion of words and ideas, someone who pushed him out of his comfort zone, who brought the best out of him - his bravery, and loyalty, and strong sense of justice - and who literally challenged death to bring him back. And won. And WN is one of the few reliable and constant things in WWX’s life, because he’s always there for him. Even when WWX’s family was gone, and his brother publicly cast him out, and Lan Wangji seemed like his enemy, and the whole world turned against him, both in his first and second lives - there wasn’t a time when Wen Ning wasn’t on his side.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I really, really like Competent Wen Ning. I often notice other people’s headcanons about him being generally unremarkable in life, a bad/mediocre cultivator, barely wielding a sword, not so skilled as a healer, etc., and... Yeah, fair enough, there is solid evidence to that in canon, but. I like to think that he was at least somewhat good at these things. He was one of the best archers WWX has ever seen. He knew Wen sect sword forms well enough to teach them to Sizhui in the extras - and even WWX had to admit that these were Sizhui’s best moves. He was scolded by Wen Qing for preparing bad medicine, yeah, but c’mon, it’s Wen Qing, the bar is sky high. And she wasn’t in a great mood, either. So Wen Ning might have a lot of hidden talents, actually. AND a crippling performance anxiety. Name a more iconic duo.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I want him to get a hobby. Or a job. Or something. I feel like he should build a nice little house. Maybe start a garden. Maybe become a weird village doctor? He should definitely adopt a stray cat or even several. Cats are going to love him, he can sit still for hours while they sleep on his lap. Idk. I feel like WN leaving WWX to find his own purpose in life was such a big moment for both of them, because yes, Wen Ning’s life has always revolved around someone else. And then he finally stopped following Wei Wuxian around and... started following the juniors, I guess. Which is a decision I 100% support and love. But I also want him to have something just for himself.

Knowing that lwj would probably rather spontaneously combust than willingly return to koi tower it’s sizhui who comes back from a guest lecture at 11 years old and says “hanguang jun, jin ling’s family has a corpse chained up in the basement?”

A few days later said chained corpse shows up on his dads bed looking extra morose and tortured while lwj heals various cuts and pops his leg back into place

they try to keep sizhui away at first, stop his memories from triggering to protect him from the realization that the world he loves made him an orphan twice over. but the kid is doggedly persistent and after a few visits it seems like nothing will happen. lwj introduces wen ning as “someone who needs us”

(sizhui is newly seventeen when he makes the connection- this is wen ning. hanguang-jun was friends with the yiling laozu who controlled the ghost general. both hanguang-jun and wen ning act like they’ve lost someone they loved. sizhui dreams that night of a blurry, charcoal covered face feeding him soup but the hands are so familiar. he spends the next day in the cold pond and vows never to bring it up to either of them)

Wen Ning lives in a long forgotten shrine just inside the border of cloud recesses closest to the jingshi. it’s only big enough for a few mats and most of the roof tiles are broken but it’s safer than bringing wn to the jingshi. When they find out who the martial god is that the shrine was built for they take care to always make sure his idol statue has a white flower to hold.

in beginning visiting is mostly just sitting in companionable silence. its easier when hanguang-jun brings sizhui, who asks some hard to dodge questions but is content knowing his dad has a friend. wen ning helps him with talismans (all of wwx’s work that the cultivation world still dares to use). 

wen ning makes a fire pit so at least lwj can have tea. maybe it’ll entice him to stay longer...

jin guangyao comes by soon after the stealing. he makes noises about visiting xichen but wangji sees his eyes darting around corners and past the treeline. A paper man trips the outer wards of the jingshi

lwj goes to the temple after escorting jgy out to find holes punched in every wall, broken tiles scattered over the floor and wen ning crouched terribly still amid the wreckage (a normal man would be heaving with sobs but wen ning is dead and can only smash out his feelings)

wangji sweeps everything into a pile and then starts playing his qin. he only plays wei ying’s songs. wen ning doesnt move for hours until he suddenly just falls over on his side. 

wangji hadn’t known until then whether or not wen ning actually needed sleep. turns out he doesnt need it but can be persuaded into it

lwj lays out two mats and they sleep through the night (fitfully, wen ning reaches out in his dreams and grabs the front of lwj’s robes. lwj holds on to his wrist the rest of the night)

Lwj was never resentful toward wen ning. Wen Ning kept wwx safe when wangji could not. Wen Ning is obviously in love with wei ying but at this point it’s a blessing to be around someone who doesn’t hate the love of lwj’s life. It takes a few days to get the words out (which wen ning spends constantly fearful lwj is gonna kill him for real for failing to keep wwx from dying, which would be just what he deserves) but lwj knows now to tell the people he loves what is important. So he doesn’t let this misunderstanding lie for very long

lwj feels guilty. even though he was enthralled, if lwj hadn’t intervened then wen ning could have spent this time in blissful ignorance, unaware of the miserable fact of wei wuxian’s death. but at the same time lwj is comforted by having someone to weather the grief with. someone else who loved wei ying (he doesn’t know it for a long time, but wen ning thinks the same)

one night wen ning follows lwj out on a night hunt. he makes sure to follow unseen- but ends up intervening when lwj takes on many more ghouls than he can handle. 

wen ning understands that this is lwj’s coping mechanism, throwing himself into the chaos, but he’s already watched one person he loved drive himself to ruin so he does everything possible to keep hanguang-jun in one piece, physically and mentally

so they night hunt together. wen ning gets to help a-yuan grow up (although he’s walking on eggshells the whole time). every year he helps lan wangji make a fire outside the temple and they burn joss paper. the rabbits love wen ning possibly even more than they love lan wangji and like to chew on his robes (wen ning lets them bc he is a noodle)

the art happens here bc only healing around the bunnies

Bonus wangningxian 

lan wangji would never let wn accompany him on night hunts when other sects are involved, but something about both jiang cheng and jin rulan and sizhui being at dafan mountain makes wen ning follow. he felt a major disturbance in the world just a few days prior. worrying never did wen ning wrong yet

he pretends to still be enthralled so the others don’t suspect wwx summoned him intentionally (of course he knows it’s wwx under the mask bc power of love and also nobody else is strong enough in demonic cultivation to control him)

when wwx asks next time they meet in yueyang, wen ning pretends to not know who broke him out of koi tower. he can save face for lan wangji that way. and besides, anyone can see that lwj and wwx are the kind of soulmates wen ning will never be to someone. 

lwj lets it slip anyway while he’s wasted. wwx accurately guesses at wen ning covering for lwj but is still an oblivious idiot

after the golden core reveal wangji and wen ning both carry wwx away

wei wuxian wakes up in a boat with his head in lan zhan’s lap and his feet tangled with wen ning’s boots. theyre nice boots- like something lan zhan would buy in white

they go to the guanyin temple. wwx is thankful that wen ning and lan zhan have had each other all the years he’s been dead. he wonders aloud if sizhui would be friends with wen ning now that they’ve all met, because obviously wen ning didn’t know any of the juniors until yi city

this is getting long so everything else happens as usual, wwx still goes on his lonely mental healing vacation, he runs into sizhui and lan zhan and wen ning on a night hunt on his way back and realizes watching the three of them interact that they’ve already been 3/4 of a family just waiting for him to come back

and it was all Gay and Good the end
