the biggest on pet names absolutely loves them. loves using them loves being called them. all around you rarely hear your actual name from him

at the start he definitely uses babe/handsome/gorgeous/cutie. the typical sweet things but as your relationship evolves you definitely come up with things that are special to the two of you.

Jacob likes to be called my love (he's a little embarrassed about this at the start) and hubby. To him those two are like the ultimate endearments that prove you do actually love him. he's your sweetheart so that defs gets thrown around as well.

In my opinion Jacob's body type is the cuddliest so cuddlebear is a big one as well.

Hey, thanks so much for your ask! I honestly wasn’t sure how to approach them going on a date so these are headcanons about what they’re like dating in general :) I hope that’s okay! If I get some ideas for their ideal dates then I’ll be sure to post those too! These can be applied to a canon s/o, gender neutral reader insert etc. These are just my opinion so please feel free to agree or disagree! Also I’ll do some other characters in a part 2 including Li Yong and some others :)

Ah Sahm

A cheeky and flirty little shit by nature but it’s very easy to make him blush with a few choice words if he’s caught off guard. He also loves making his s/o a little flustered in return with kisses to their knuckles, by running his mouth or simply by letting his eyes rake over them a certain way

So incredibly gentle with his s/o even when he knows he doesn’t have to be. Gentle touches, kisses and words are a must from him, especially gentle kisses. Loving is the one part of his life in which he doesn’t really feel the need to put on a brave face. His s/o will get to see the kindest, softest and most giving side of him

Doesn’t get jealous at all, it’s just not really in her nature. She’s happy in the relationship when her s/o is, she doesn’t really mind what form that takes. Once she has feelings for someone she’ll very quickly let them know, what they do with that information is up to them

However, she is fiercely protective of her s/o as she’s very much scared of losing them like she’s lost so many other things in her life. She’s also more than a little hesitant to get attached or fall in love with someone at first because of this. But once she trusts she trusts deeply and fully

She might not admit it at first but she absolutely loves being held and taken care of every once in awhile. If her s/o do something nice for her she just melts because she’s not used to being cared for. Gifting her something she’s been talking about is one of the easiest ways to make her smile brightly and give her s/o an excited kiss on the cheek

She doesn’t use too many terms of endearment for her s/o but when she does then it’s usually gorgeous, angel or dear. If her s/o calls her by a term of endearment then she’d probably blush, and it’s hard to make her blush otherwise. It just makes her feel so cherished

Bolo

He’s got an arm around his s/o at any given opportunity. He just likes being able to have them close and let them feel him there. It grounds him in addition to letting his s/o know that he’s there for them. He’ll also kiss their temple or forehead a lot too

Is protective even more so than Ah Toy. He’s lost and has been through a lot in his lifetime so he wants to shield his s/o from any of that. That overprotectiveness doesn’t come from a place of mistrust or anything like that, he just wants to keep them safe as best as he can. But one stern telling off from his s/o is more than enough to dampen that down

He loves with his heart and not at all with his head and when he falls, he falls hard. Will smile randomly or get in a bit of a haze when thinking about his s/o and gets an elbow in the ribs for daydreaming about them instead of paying attention to whatever Young Jun is saying

He loves making his s/o blush. It’s one of his favourite pastimes and he has it down to a fine art to the point where he can elicit a blush from his s/o from the minute they wake up in the morning or at any of the most random points throughout the day

Princess/Prince is his go-to. He uses it both affectionately and when he’s being cheeky. He’ll use baby girl/boy in a similar way but not as often because he knows how flustered it gets them so he’ll save that for special occasions. Any term of endearment you can think of he’s probably used for his s/o at some stage including but not limited to sweetness, babe and many others

Young Jun

Immediately mellows out upon having an s/o. He takes someone wanting a relationship with him very seriously as he’s never really had anything other than a fling before

He absolutely showers his s/o in love and affection as often as they let him. Isn’t shy about displaying affection in public at all as he’s just thankful that he can

A very attentive lover and he’s happy to be essentially whatever his s/o needs him to be for them. Likes listening to his s/o ramble about their day and will sit there listening with nothing but affection in his eyes as he does

He falls hard and so very quickly. He’ll probably feel pure infatuation at first and try to whoo the person he’s attracted however he’ll soon calm down and start treating them as more than someone he’s physically attracted to. It just might take him awhile to come to terms with the fact that he’s feeling something other than lust

Loves using nicknames. Sugar, gorgeous, doll and beautiful/handsome are his favourites. Especially gorgeous. Gorgeous is his favourite to use for them because that’s exactly what they are to him and he wants them to know that. u know what? i think it’s okay to want more inclusivity in ‘x reader’ smut fanfic. i think it’s okay to be frustrated about how it’s hard to find. if you’re a writer you might be looking for ways to do that but finding it difficult or feeling unsure of a way to do so accurately. i know it can be a bit hard, especially when it’s about sex. i have also seen that some writers are worried about inaccurately representing or depicting diverse readers, especially when it comes to penetration and sex acts involving genitals. if you’re struggling with that and are looking for some ways to be more inclusive here’s some tips! (minors do not interact, obviously)

try to avoid pronouns. non-gendered nicknames and pet names are still fine! if you are concerned about your writing sounding too unnatural, go through and reread it. you’ll find that it sounds a lot more natural than you thought! if “they” still seems awkward in a sentence you can try something like “honey” or change it (if possible, depends on the dialogue) so that the character is talking TO the reader and use they!

some good gender neutral pet names: honey, love, baby, lovely, cutie, babe, master (instead of mommy, daddy, or mistress) or my liege/liege (instead of princess/prince). “good baby” or “that’s my baby” or “there’s a good baby” work instead of “good girl/boy.”

if your fic mentions people referring to the reader as a girl or woman EVEN AS A TERM OF ENDEARMENT, you NEED to mention that if you’ve stated there are no pronouns used.

avoid mentioning hair or skin. with hair that includes both the LENGTH AND THE TEXTURE! some people have hair that won’t allow anyone to run their fingers through it. “running their fingers over your hair/toying with your hair” are great alternatives. avoiding using “soft” or color descriptors when describing hair or skin is also a good idea. (not just for POC but also for people with severe acne, burn scars, people who can’t grow hair, etc.)

avoid mentioning clothing or choose gender neutral clothing. “underwear” is better than “panties.” some trans men do not wear bras and some people don’t wear lingerie. but you can still build anticipation by slowing down the removal of clothing or going into detail about the emotional (mention if the reader/love interest is feeling nervous or anxious or desired) or physical details (is the love interest kissing the reader as they slide up your shirt? are they staring with hooded eyes as more of your skin is being revealed?).

always describing the reader as wearing a dress or skirt or heels or a blouse CAN cause dysphoria esp if your fic is labeled as having a gender neutral reader or does not use pronouns. this one specifically causes me the most dysphoria. (i def agree that the idea of clothing being gendered is stupid, but when it’s mentioned in fics it’s usually prolific in people who write for afab reader and mentioned frequently, SPECIFICALLY by love interest. it’s almost always a comment about how sexy or hot the reader is in the dress, making it seem like the love interest is being turned on by the FEMINITY of the reader.)

you can still portray that the romantic/sexual interest in the fic finds the reader sexy without going into detail about what they’re wearing. try mentioning body parts more, or using pants and shirts because everyone wears them regardless of gender. also a good tip if you still want to include specific clothing in a fic: specify if the reader is feminine or masculine before hand. or if they’re cis, specify that.

for body parts try to avoid using the terms “breasts” or “tits.” instead use “chest” or “nipples” instead. sometimes mentioning how “your breasts fill his hands” or how “your breasts jiggle” can exclude not ONLY people who have had top surgery but also women with smaller breasts. use chest or nipples. having the love interest say “your nipples are so cute and sensitive” or “i love leaving marks around your nipples” or “i love kissing down your chest and making you feel good.”

specify afab or amab reader if you have genital specific penetration in it. i feel like most people are aware but that can cause a LOT of dysphoria for binary (male or female) trans people. and also, your fic can still be for a gender neutral reader if you include afab/amab. if it’s NOT for a gender neutral reader don’t put afab/amab. be aware that assigned gender at birth is something mostly used to describe someone who is transgender. if your reader is cis, don’t use afab/amab. you can also specify trans woman or trans man reader if you are writing about a binary trans reader.

afab does not mean feminine and amab does not mean masculine. as a non-binary person this is a personal frustration of me and a lot of other non-binary trans people. afab nb people are not “woman lite” and amab nb people are not “feminine men.” as a way to make things more inclusive and a good first step into writing for trans readers if you’re not trans, you can try to first write fluff/suggestive fluff with a reader that is masculine but does not use pronouns or one who is feminine but does not use pronouns. feminine does not mean female and masculine does not mean male.

trying to specify if a character is more masculine or feminine? you can do this by getting specific about clothing, (dress or suit? lingerie or silky boxers?) or general features (solid and stocky, or delicate and graceful? facial hair? make up?). but the important thing is how the other characters in the story treat and interact with the reader. a masculine reader is less likely to be fawned over and stared at by every man in the room. they are less likely to be treated like a “lady.” a feminine reader is less likely to be called strong. they’re less likely to be called “bro” and have people use crass sexual language around them (obvs in the bedroom it’s different).

okay, let’s talk about sex now: here’s some tips for writing afab smut. i know most fanfic writers are afab but i’m still gonna go into it! it’s okay to write from the love interests point of view if you are at a loss or don’t have experience with afab genitals. you can write about what actions the reader takes that feels good for them. look up the most sensitive spots on afab bodies. (not gonna super into it cause this is already long and the info is easy to find). in general pleasure is the same regardless of genitals. mentioning tightness or how wet the reader gets and how good they feel are great things to include. focusing on how good the reader feels, or how good they look like they’re feeling. if you’re really feeling unsure or uncomfortable writing afab penetration, remember that everyone likes oral and everyone has a butthole. penetration is supposed to feel good! and penetration is not the be all end all or only way to have sex!

tips for writing amab smut: gonna mention the same thing here! if you’re really not sure you can try switching the POV to the love interest’s perspective! remember that penetration is supposed to feel good, both receiving and giving. writing from the person who’s being penetrated’s perspective is also a good place to start. ever written pegging fics? try writing it the same way but change any mention of “strap” to “dick.” there you go! otherwise my tips are gonna be the same as above. pleasure isn’t gendered. what in general what feels good.

tips for writing gender neutral smut: that’s right! you can, AND you can make it just as hot without mentioning reader’s genitals. writing giving oral is going to be the same regardless of who’s giving it. you can always talk about the love interest putting their head between the reader’s thighs. mentioning licking and sucking is okay because that feels good for everyone regardless of genitals. focus on how it feels instead of what is physically happening. use those adjectives friends. hand stuff? fingering and penetration are gender neutral. we all got holes. put stuff in em. write about it. hell yeah.

stuff to use instead of describing genitals: sex (as a noun), between your thighs/legs, inside/inside of you, hole (yeah i know that one isn’t the most creative but...it’s still hot). penetrating is also gender neutral. try length, you (“you feel so good inside me, i can feel all of you, etc.”) it (it’s so big, i can’t believe it’s inside me, etc,”) describing how the penetration feels or how the person penetrating feels is also good.

a strap on is a dick. if anyone in the story is using one, try having everyone in the story call it that. i know i mentioned it earlier but i want it to have it’s own bullet point. it’s a great way to build up to becoming comfortable with keeping the right pronouns for a trans character mid smut scene, or as practice for writing a fic with a trans man that hasn’t had bottom surgery.

dom and sub and top and bottom are not the same. someone can bottom AND dom. someone can top AND sub. top is who’s penetrating and bottom is who is being penetrated. a switch is someone who likes to both dom and sub. a vers is someone who tops and bottoms. SOMETIMES people use switch instead of verse. if you use or discuss a switch please say what kind of switch. top and bottom is mostly used for gay sex. if you’re writing about a heterosexual cis couple, a cis female reader domming a cis male one, she isn’t topping him. she’s only topping IF she’s using a strap on. using top and bottom when you mean dom or sub is taking and redefining terms created by and for the gay community, so please use them correctly. (my opinion. some may disagree but it seems to be a sense of frustration for many of us.)

you can dom and bottom and you can sub and top. penetration does not determine power dynamics. size and age difference do not determine power dynamics. gender and genitals do NOT determine power dynamics.

listen to your lgbtq+ and poc readers. if you write something and you want to know if it’s inclusive enough or if it portrays lgbtq+ characters just ask and be open to what we have to say. most of us won’t try to attack you, we’ll be grateful you’re trying to write something for us at all. inclusive writing may not get as many notes either, but inclusivity is not about popularity.

if you only feeling comfortable writing for your own gender, even if you’re cis? ask yourself why. is it because thats the only kind of reader you feel comfortable writing? that’s okay. is it because you’re only comfortable writing PIV smut scenes and don’t feel you know enough about other sexual dynamics to be able to portray them well? that’s okay too. but that doesn’t mean that everyone in your story has to be cis. it’s not an excuse for not writing a trans love interest. trans people are diverse. trans men are not all masculine and trans women are not all feminine. non-binary people are not all androgynous. trans men do not all have vaginas and trans women do not all have penises either.

fic writers that only write for a POC or trans reader (or both) are doing as much as they can to bring more inclusivity and diversity among writers. asking us to ‘write more inclusively’ or ‘make the reader more vague so EVERYONE can read it’ or whatever isn’t okay. those of us that write for POC and gay/trans reader are few. a lot of the time we can’t FIND fics written that include us. sooo we create them. instead of complaining, you should reblog their fics.

it’s okay to write for a reader or about a character that is a different race or skin color from you, but you can NOT fetishize them. don’t try to use aave in your fics when you’re white. don’t CHANGE the race of characters that are POC. no mention of how beautiful their skin color is because it’s different than yours. no changing black or brown characters to white. no trying to write characters as “culturally black.” NO talking about bbc or calling physical features or languages exotic. the number one example i can think of is white bnha fans changing sero’s ethnicity to hispanic so he can use spanish bc it’s their kink. do not fetishize languages or cultures or ethnicity or race. that is not inclusivity.

you can write whatever you want, but please tag it and label it correctly. writing is supposed to be fun so do it because you want to. it’s okay to only write for yourself. i’m not trying to tell you you HAVE to write in a way that includes everyone all the time. but please tag your shit right. when you tag shit as afab/no pronouns and then use “baby girl” or promote it as gender neutral amab reader and then make them super fem you’re gonna give people dysphoria. when your fics always describe the reader as white or cis or amab/afab or fem/masc or whatever, label it.

if you like inclusivity and wished you saw more of it, you have to participate. write and reblog inclusive fics. reblog fics from lgbtq+ writers. reblog from POC writers. even if the fic isn’t written for or about you. read fics even tho they’re not. read gender neutral fics. you don’t have to read fics that are about things you don’t like, but read x reader fanfics even when you can’t self insert into them. if you want more diversity or inclusivity, if you think it’s important, YOU have to try to make that happen. instead of reblogging posts about how you support it, do something to show your support.

Headcanons for my favorite queer Danganronpa ships (+AroAce Chihiro): Dr1 & Udg~

Celesgiri:

- They are the two who start dating after consistent events of being done with everyone else’s shit together. It was probably the fifth time Leon got his good throwing hand stuck in a pickles jar where they decided to say fuck these people and make out in the closest that night, ditching their friends game night in the middle of charades.

- When Celestia first saw Kyoko’s hands without her gloves on, she was shocked. Not so much because of the scars, but because of the look of shame and discomfort that was blatant in Kyoko’s features. That night they had a talk and Celestia repeatedly told Kyoko that she was beautiful and reassured her that Celestia adored her. That would be the same night where they shared their first “I love you”s.

- Kyoko is one of the very few people who know about Celestia’s vampire fetish and always teases her about it. For Halloween she decided to surprise her by dressing up as one, and Kyoko swears she has never seen Celestia blush so much.

- Celestia loves to teasingly flirt with Kyoko whenever Kyoko is busy. She definitely looked up pick up lines and fancy French terms of endearment to use before Kyoko starts her work. Kyoko always rolls her eyes at Celestia’s antics, but deep down inside they both know they are the highlight of Kyoko’s day.

Ikuzono:

- Sayaka loves to kiss the few scars Mukuro has and has only shown her. It’s always a very intimate and vulnerable moment for the two, and Mukuro always gets a bit worried and insecure when she shows them so Sayaka happily reassures Mukuro that she is beautiful before showering her in kisses.

- Mukuro has definitely beaten up a few guys who have stared at Sayaka for too long in a certain way before. Having an idol for a girlfriend is rough, but thankfully it allows her to flex her amazing strength and muscles, which Sayaka always finds hella attractive and will thank her with a kiss, regardless of whether the paparazzi is there or not.

- Mukuro sometimes has nightmares about Junko. During these nights Sayaka will come in, spoon her, and quietly sing Mukuro back to sleep until she is snoozing again while snuggled up in Sayaka’s arms.

- Mukuro has a wolf onesie while Sayaka has a koala bear onesie and they always have cuddly dates in them at least once a month (once it was every night of the week for two months). Mukuro always gets bashful wearing her onesie, meanwhile Sayaka is just gushing over how cute her girlfriend is.

Tokomaru/Syomaru:

- They always share a bed ever since the udg events. Even when Toko got over her worry about ghosts, they still share a bed and stay up late talking to each other until they both pass out. It’s really helpful for times when one of them has a nightmare as sometimes Toko doesn’t wake up, so Komaru just quietly holds her and soothes Toko as she calms down in her sleep.

- Jill loves to gush on Komaru and show off. She’s actually decently strong, so they will carry Komaru around and bench press her at times to show how strong they are and how they can protect her like how they protect Toko. (Jill is a protector alter for Toko’s DID system, and that protective nature rubs off onto Komaru after they start dating and as Jill grows more and more fond of Komaru)

- Komaru and her girlfriends love to take baths together. It started off when Toko was in a depressive swing and Komaru helped her get through the necessities (cooking Toko meals, brushing her hair, etc.) and it ended up making Toko very happy, so they continued to do it. Toko likes bubble baths and Jill loves bath bombs, and Komaru always brings scented candles so it’s always just a nice relaxing moment between the girlfriends.

- Toko is a little spoon who will never admit that fact out loud, while Jill is a big spoon. Komaru loves it because she constantly gets to be both the big spoon and the little spoon, and cuddle times with her girlfriends always leaves her in a state of pure bliss.

Ishimondo:

- Mondo was probably Taka’s last straw before he accepted the fact that he liked guys. Like he is chill with gay people but he never fully saw himself as one, constantly questioning it but thanks to heteronormativity he repressed those thoughts a bit, and then he looks at Mondo and went “ah, so this is what it means to ‘gay panic’”.

- Mondo likes to follow Taka to help him keep the others in line with school rules. Whenever someone seems to question Taka or is about to berate Taka for being so stringent, they get a death glare from Mondo that reads “you better listen to my boyfriend”. Taka always thinks it’s his authority that makes the others listen out of respect, and Mondo doesn’t have the heart to tell him the truth.

- Bro is their casual tough guy way of a cute pet name for each other. This is mainly because Mondo called Taka babes once, and Taka gay panicked so much that he passed out. Poor baby couldn’t handle how soft it made him. It was both very concerning and very cute to Mondo who ended up watching over Taka until he regained his composure.

-they are like so supportive of everyone else, either being the big gay brothers or the dads of everyone else. They have a mlm-wlw solidity with Sakuraoi where they take care of everyone and all the baby gays. They also have monthly game nights where they playfully compete against each other in a joke battle between the gays and the lesbians. Just lots of lgbtq+ jokes and fluff and support, all in good fun and never any hard feelings towards who wins and who loses. Really they are just a badass yet very considerate and soft couple with one another.

Sakuraoi:

- Aoi definitely asked Sakura out first, and knowing her it was either to get something to eat with her or to work out together. They both really admire each other so they would be down for whatever, but neither is big on PDA in public besides hugging and hand-holding and the occasional kiss on the cheek or pet name. It took the others about a month to realize the two were dating because they were so casual about it and both forgot to tell the others, figuring the other had already done so.

- So much body positivity from both of these girls. For real, imagine comments like Ishimaru accidentally calling Sakura a guy happens all the time, so it probably means the world when Aoi just love spams a million gender neutral and feminine compliments telling Sakura how beautiful she is and how Aoi can’t believe she is dating the most gorgeous woman in the world.

- Meanwhile, Aoi sometimes worries about her weight as she is not only an athlete but also from constantly being judged for eating doughnuts so much and her other comfort foods. But Sakura tells her that those things make her happy and when she is happy she is beautiful because Aoi has the most captivating smile. They both in a way just remind each other that they are both beautiful and loved every day, but both know that the other genuinely means it.

- Sakura is amazing at baking and Aoi melts over the wife material her girlfriend is. Whenever she is stressed, Sakura bakes something with one of the other girls to cheer Aoi up, and they end up having a cuddly sleepover. Aoi in return always makes sure to comfort Sakura whenever she is stressed, with Sakura not being the type to let things get to her often so Aoi is always the worried, accepting, and loving girlfriend when Sakura needs it.

Chihiro:

- They are AroAce, but they are open to QPPs. I see Taka and Mondo being the most likely candidates, but they are more like Chihiro’s gay dads though.

- Chihiro has said sexuality can fuck itself. Taka passed out from both the sheer shock and horror of that moment.

- They probs have the worst anxiety when trying to explain the Aro spectrum and how QPRs work, so they are extremely appreciative for their friends who accept them and love them for who they are.

- They are the softest thing, I would imagine them being an amazing snuggler platonically cause they still love cuddle time, they just ain’t into romance. They are also super supportive and great at being a hype person. They are generally just precious and deserve the world and all the validation it has to offer to them.

Possessive Markers in Kazakh (or, why all those cute pet names end in ‘m’)

Been thinking about writing this one up for a while, but a combination of heavy snow and encouragement from @thissupposedcrime (who wanted to be tagged when this got posted) means it’s time. It’s thoroughly warmed my heart to see writers going out of their way to find and use Kazakh terms of endearment in their YOI writing. So few people know much of anything about Kazakhstan and Otabek is such fabulous representation to get people interested. This isn’t about correcting anything, just explaining a construction that you might be seeing if you’re reading or writing Otabek-centered fics. Or if you’re just interested in learning a little more about the language.

A quick disclaimer: My background is in linguistics and I’ve done a fair bit of work on Turkic languages of the former USSR, but I’m not a native speaker of Kazakh or any other Turkic language. I spent almost 9 months in Kazakhstan, mostly in Almaty, studying the language, but I’m not fluent. I’m pretty confident in explaining this topic, but if you know more than I do and you see a mistake, please let me know (thanks to @qisforqazaq and @spaceman2823 noting a few spelling mistakes, which have been corrected, and @starkysnarks for native speaker confirmation).

So, a little background about Kazakh as a language: Kazakh is a Turkic language, closely related to (among other things) Turkish. Unless you start buying into overly-ambitious attempts to trace all human languages to a common linguistic ancestor, Kazakh is unrelated to any Indo-European language (English, Russian, French, Hindi, Farsi, etc.) except by contact. This means that some of the ways words are created and strung together are entirely new to someone only familiar with languages from this family.

Indo-European possessives are typically marked on the noun doing the possessing (one of the common functions of the genitive case), if a word is changed at all:

English: Yuri’s cat ← ‘s indicates ownership of following noun

Russian: коньки Виктора (kon’ki Viktora, - Victor’s skates) ← ‘a’ marks genitive case (the genitive ending depends on gender and number of the inflected noun)

Kazakh does have a genitive case, but it also has another structure that marks possession on the thing that’s possessed. So we get constructions like:

Отабектiң мысығы (Otabekting mysyghy - Otabek’s cat) ← here, both the owner and what is owned have endings reflecting that relationship. Otabek has a genitive -ting ending (which has a couple of forms that depend on the phonetics of the root word), and mysyq has an ending showing that it is possessed by a 3rd person subject (this also varies slightly depending on the phonetics of the root word).

(note: I’m being pretty lax in my transliterations to avoid using nonstandard Latin characters, and largely defaulting to standard transliteration for Russian Cyrillic but I did make sure that each Kazakh Cyrillic letter had a unique transliteration)

This ending agrees with its subject in being 1st, 2nd or 3rd person, with some phonetic variation. Here’s a few more examples:

Менiң шайым (Mening shajim - My tea) (var. m/im/ym)

Сенiң алмаң (Sening almang - Your (inf.) apple) (var. ng/ing/yng)

Сiздiң кiтабыңыз (Sizding kitabyngyz - Your (form.) book) (var. ngiz/ngyz/ingiz/yngyz)

Оның есiгi (Oning esigi - Its door) (var. i/y/si/sy)

I won’t go into a lot of detail about the different variants of each here, but 1st person always includes [m], 2nd person always includes [ng], third person always ends with i or y. If folks ask for a writeup about how Kazakh affixes depend on phonetic features, I’d probably write that up separately.

A side note about the informal/polite versions of ‘you’: If you Google Translate up some Kazakh dialogue, it defaults to using the more formal ciз (siz) which probably isn’t what you want when you’re writing heartfelt dialogue between friends, family or lovers (so, basically all the Kazakh dialogue I’ve seen in fanfiction).

So, what about plurals? This is where we hit the thing about forming words in Kazakh that really lets this happen. So, where in a language like Russian, a single given case ending will contain information about the gender AND number AND case of the noun, Kazakh uses separate endings for all of these things (except gender - Turkic languages don’t have grammatical gender at all. Anywhere the language identifies the gender of something, it does so using distinct root words). So, plurals just entail adding an ending. And aren’t marked as frequently (This doesn’t work out perfectly in pronouns because of language contact and colonialism, but I’m not going to rehash my whole thesis here - but can you tell that ‘siz’ used to be a plural?).

Бiздiң қаламыз (Bizding qalamyz - Our city)

Сендердiң иттерiң (Senderding ïtterring - Your (pl., fam) dogs)

Сiздердiң мектебiңiз (Sizderding mektebingiz - You (pl, form.) school)

Олардың бақшасы (Olardyng baqshasy - Their garden)

In an inflectional language like Russian, there wouldn’t be room to include this kind of ending because it couldn’t also encode information about other cases. Because Kazakh is an agglutinating language, you can keep tacking on suffixes all day. In fact, you can encode a whole clause in one word that would take many in an Indo-European language like English:

Жазушыларымыздан (zhazushylarymyzdan) - That which is from our writers

Back to cutesy affectionate language, though. One of the other advantages of this structure is that it allows you to indicate an association or relationship without using a possessive pronoun. So, all of the places where жаным, ботам, күнім, сүйіктім, or алтыным turn up, they have a relationship to the speaker embedded in them. So, for example, zhanym isn’t the word for soul, zhan is.

Жан - zhan - soul (жаным - zhanym - my soul)

Күн - kün - sun (also, day; күнім - künim - my sun)

Сүйікті - süjikti - favorite, chosen (сүйіктім - süyiktim- my chosen one)

Алтын - altyn - gold (алтыным - altynym - my gold/treasure; this word was also transliterated by a certain show as ‘altin’ So, yes, it is Otabek’s family name, which means him using it as a term of endearment seems particularly pointed.)

So, let’s say that you wanted to write Otabek talking to Yuri about his cat. He might teasingly refer to the cat as сүйіктің (süyikting, your most favored one). Even if they were speaking Russian (this kind of thing def. slips into the way that Kazakh speakers speak Russian, especially when comfy with friends, because it’s just not as elegant in Russian) (also, when drunk and not remembering that not everyone speaks all the languages you do and some words are just easier #multilingualproblems).

Final point: you can put these endings on anything. Even names. So, you might get a construction like Отабегiм (Otabegim - my Otabek) or Бекам (Bekam - my Beka, though it might just as likely be Bekem). Since I’m trying to write this in a ship-neutral way, here’s a list of every character I’ve seen Otabek shipped with on Ao3 with this construction for first person.

Юрийым (Yuriyim - my Yuri) This works for Plisetsky or Katsuki

Милам (Milam - my Mila)

Жэй-Жэйым (Je-Jeyim - my JJ); (shit, if you just use Jean with French pronunciation, you get жан, which gives you жаным - 5 points to JJBek)

Лeом (Leom - my Leo (uses Spanish pronunciation of Leo) - I’m not confident on the spelling, but yes this does exist. If you take this one up, it might turn into Левiм, using the Russian translation of Leo (cf. Tolstoy). The Kazakh translation of Leo is Aslan (cf. Farsi for ‘lion,’ tyvm CS Lewis), which is also used as a name - Aslanym with the 1st person possessive ending.)

Викторым (Viktorym - yeah, this one’s out there, too. I don’t think I read it, but the summary seemed to suggest it followed from shared pining over oblivious, unresponsive men named Yuri)

Кристофым/Крисiм (Cristophym/Chrisim - because is there anyone in the YOI universe with whom he *hasn’t* been romantically linked?)

Пичитiм (Phichitim - a puzzling, but adorable thought.)

Сюң-гилiм (Seung-gilim - there’s actually a couple of these out there)

this is purely based on my own personal opinions. agree or disagree, either way, enjoy!

- I see Chani as the type to (over time) fall for one of his really good friends

- Very playful (both before and after you two are in a relationship)

- Once he starts to realize his newfound feelings for you, he desperately tries not to let it effect the way he acts in front of you

- But fails miserably

- Where he used to jokingly smack, poke and ruffle your hair without a second thought, he’s now constantly hesitant to touch you in the slightest way

- The stronger his feelings get, the more awkward he becomes

- “Chan, hurry! The movies starting!”

- “O-Ok, coming.”

- “Chani… Why are you sitting all the way on the other side of the couch…?”
