The Most Annoying Trope Showdown: Round 1, Poll 6

Soulmates

soulmates is a universe setting where every person has a single romantic partner they are tied to their entire or most of their lives in mysterious and magical ways depending on the setting

Propaganda:

as an aromantic person never once in my life have i seen a soulmate story that made me feel acknowledged in any capacity besides the ones using the story to complain about soulmate stories. any pairing outside the monogamous norm literally has to go against the laws of the Universe. sometimes people do try to subvert monogamous expectations! but these attempts need to be subversive of the trope because of the "one true love" the trope is defined by, and imo a trope isnt worth it if it needs to be subverted to mean anything. it never works for me.

Love At First Sight

Falling in love with someone upon meeting/seeing them for the first time.

Propaganda:

No shame to people who enjoy this trope, but I can't see it as anything other than lazy and boring, and also a bit forced. It's like the writers knew that these characters had to get together, but they didn't feel like showing the process of how they fell in love. So, they just have the guy spot the girl from across the room and decide he loves her because her hair looks nice or something. IMO relationships in fiction are much more interesting when they build up and the characters realize their love for each other by actually spending time together and getting to know each other. There's no real reason to be invested in their relationship when it seemed to just spawn instantaneously.

It feeds into the heteronormative idea that men and women cannot be friends without falling in love with each other. Also it’s just really annoying, especially from an aro/ace perspective, like why are you acting like this??

I don't know if this is because writers want to include a relationship but just didn't know how to write one, or were too lazy to write one, or feel like they HAVE to include a romantic subplot despite not being all that interested in it, but the end result is a romantic subplot with all of the tedium and none of the good parts. (For the fanfiction version, see the Soulmate AU.) There's no chemistry, no development, not the slightest consideration for how or whether the characters might actually be compatible, they just lock eyes once and immediately fall head over heels.

Cabby's lesbian-coding in Inanimate Insanity Invitational

I went through everything current episode of Inanimate Insanity Invitational, and official art to find every piece of evidence hinting at Cabby being a lesbian.

Because the finale is coming up, what a better time to post this!

I am lesbian Cabby's strongest soldier.

First off, official art.

New Years Official art (couldn't find exact date, possibly 2023 or 2022 considering the fact it contains Bot's old design.)

Here, we see Test Tube and Cabby having a nice little chat. This may not seem like much, until you consider Cabby's behaviour around Test Tube (which we will get into in a moment.)

Pride Month art (semi-offical, cakebrunch is apart of the II team as a Storyboard artist.)

Cabby is seen holding a file, coloured like the Lesbian flag, pretty self explainitory.

This may not look like it implies alot, however it contains some canon LGBTQ characters holding their flags!

Paintbrush and Bot are both non-binary.

Lightbulb is transgender.

Balloon is Aromantic.

Paper and OJ are heavily hinted at by the team (mostly Justin.)

Before I get onto the show, I wanted to add that Cabby's VA, Casey Landman said herself she is playing Cabby in a "sapphic" way ON PURPOSE.

Cabby's admiration towards Test Tube

In Snapshot Showdown, Cabby seems to be very determined in protecting Test Tube from OJ.

In the same episode, Cabby seems to be very excited to show her team her files when Test Tube asks them.

In Best Served Cold, the teams get mixed up and reorganised after The Sinkers lost nearly all of their team, resulting in Cabby losing all of her teammates, but she is thankful that she still has Test Tube with her. She also mentions how she wants to "make things right" with Test Tube, after their conflict in Tragedy at Sixy Feet. Cabby also uses the word "valuable" to describe her.

Cabby goes on and offers Test Tube for them to "combine their intelligence" and from and alliance.

Cabby tells Test Tube that she "likes them" and says if they can work it out, they can make it far, together.

Later on in the episode, Cabby goes as far as to trust Test Tube with her files, possibly one of her most crucial items.

She also says she values Test Tube's insight.

Only then for Test Tube to betray them later on at the elimination ceremony...

Cabby then says that she wanted to keep Test Tube's "history."

Cabby's flirty behavior

On rare occasions, Cabby can act a bit "flirty" towards female and non-binary contestant.

Qualifications:

chronic pain due to literally shattering into pieces and being put back together with molten gold. canon nonbinary [he/they]. i don’t have the spoons for a ramble on their character arc but i am holding them gently in my little hands.

They are canonically depicted with chronic pain. This a major part of their character development and how they interact with other characters in the campaign. The actor who portrays them is also bisexual and deals with chronic pain; Taliesin Jaffe.

A literal jaded punk rock. They were soft once... and then they turnd into stone. His body was shattered and glued back together by his enby housemate with melted gold. They have a hole in their head covered with glass through which you can see the brain and the chaos magic that brought them back from the brink of death. They're Constantly in pain and sometimes they don't remember who they screwed over(they crime) and what their relationship is like with people. He's a barbarian and when he rages he warps time, space, gravity or probability around him. Strongest member of their group/family Bells Hells. There's strength, but there's pain. There's pain, but there's strength. I love him very much. I'm not enby, they still give me gender envy (just like every other of his creator's characters). His coping mechanisms are not healthy in any way and he means a lot to me.

Frodo Baggins-The Lord Of The Rings

Qualifications:

Frodo & Sam are very homoerotic. As JRRT knew and loved several openly gay authors, one of his closest friends was suspected of being gay, and with other historical events of the time, you can’t convince me it wasn’t at least a little bit subconsciously on purpose. Frodo, of course, has ptsd and probably some form of chronic illness due to the lingering effects of his nazgul wound.

Propaganda:

Frodo carried the weight of the world on his shoulders and was forever changed by it. The literal devil’s soul was constantly around his neck, always tempting him, growing stronger by the minute, twisting him and torturing him mentally. He didn’t know how his journey would end when he offered to take on the burden of destroying the most evil object in the world, but he chose to do it anyway. And he was forever ruined by it - so much that he never truly came home, not really. And once he was home, life was so thoroughly ruined for him that he could not stay. There is one other known account of this happening - Arwen’s mother, who was captured and tortured for years by orcs, and while her body was healed, her mind could not be, and she, too, sailed away. Do you understand that? Frodo’s journey was on the same level as *being captured and tortured for years on end.* He is probably the gayest non-canon confirmed character I have ever come across, queer-coded through and through, and his ptsd was enough that he could not come home, and had to sail to paradise to find peace. He deserves everything.

✨ How did you come up with the OC’s name?

I wanted to use a word that meant ice that wasn't extremely obvious, and Rime ended up being perfect! To be specific it means hoar frost.

🌼 How old are they? (Or approximate age range)

Same age as Blaze! She was created ~100 years ago, but like Shadow she was frozen and didn't age until she got woken up.

🌺 Do they have any love interest(s)?

She's aro, so no romantic love interest. That said, she and Blaze do definitely end up in a relationship :3

🍕 What is their favorite food?

Surprisingly, anything spicy!

🎹 Do they have any hobbies?

Ice skating! Rime can create her own ice and propell herself pretty easily, but outside of fighting she's discovered she loves the elegance of truly dancing on ice, and challenges herself to learn difficult jumps. She also likes going for long morning walks, especially on a crisp winter morning when the ground is still covered in frost.

❤️ What is one of your OC’s best memories?

Most of their memories as a child with their brother, although a lot of them are bittersweet to look back on now.

✂️ What is one of your OC’s worst memories?

Seeing her brother die before being frozen.

🧊 Is their current design the first one?

Yup! Some of their fur colour has changed ever so slightly (her muzzle and ear/chest fluff are now pure white rather than the same off white as the rest of her fur) but that's it.

@transgendershadowthehedgehog made a post about how Blaze should have an aro cryomancer rival, and I ran with the idea.

🌂 What genre do they belong in?

@mari-madas gave me the idea that the Sol dimension is centered more around fantasy in contrast with Sonic's dimension being more sci fi. Not a hard and fast rule as they both have magic and tech, but it's about the Aesthetic™. So, fantasy!

💚 What is your OC’s gender identity and sexuality?

Aromantic nonbinary lesbian! Or as she would describe herself, girlthing.

🙌 How many sibling does your OC have?

Just the one, her adopted brother, Gertrude's grandson! Possibly also a Sol version of Biolizard, but I haven't come up with anything for that idea yet

🍎 What is the OC’s relationship w/their parents like?

Like Shadow, Rime was made rather than born, so technically doesn't have parents. But her creator, the witch Gertrude, was basically a mother to her... In a way.

Rime was always perfectly happy with Gertrude and never really thinks anything was wrong with how they grew up. But anyone else might think differently, as Rime was treated more like an animal than a person. Not with (much) malice, Gertrude just assumed that Rime didn't have the intelligence of a regular mobian. This allowed Rime to grow up pretty feral, which she considers a good thing! She won't look too deeply into it. She DOESN'T have mommy issues, promise (lying).

✏️ How often do you draw/write about the OC?

Definitely more since this showndown, which I'm glad of! I want to draw her more in the future too, she simply hasn't been around long enough for me to have made a lot of art for her.

💎 Do you ever see yourself killing off the OC?

I mean... gestures to Shadow "dying" at the end of sa2. A similar thing happens to Rime, so while she does die, it's not permanent.

💀 Does your OC have any phobias?

Large open areas, especially at night. Being in space is particularly awful for her (not that she'd show it)

she prefers dual-wielding two short blades but can fight with pretty much anything. she's ambidextrous she's autistic she's even sex-repulsed ace. she sighs longingly when reunited with her weapons. she's from planet academia and dresses like an off-duty librarian. literally one of the most iconic moments of the entire series is when she gets challenged to a duel and absolutely wipes the floor with her opponent even though she doesn't even like rapiers that much. 'swords don't lie.' 

OK I’m sure you’re getting just about every character from The Locked Tomb but Cam is my favorite. She's a nerd AND a jock. She is in this deeply intense and loving and unhealthily codependent soulbond partnership with her best friend second cousin and prince. She is smart and deadpan snarky and fights like a grease fire and I have never been able to get that line out of my head.

For Olivier:

She is only female general in her nation, and guards the northern border. She fights with a sword even though there are other people with guns. Olivier is unmarried despite being older (not sure how old exactly, but she is a general, and that takes time). To the best of my knowledge she shows no interest in anyone, thus making it possible to interpret her as aromantic and asexual, or as a lesbian. The bit where Mustang offers to take her on a date and she threatens to eat so much she will bankrupt him is funny.

otto mentallis and bob zanotto used to get high together and argue (married bickering lbr).

in helmut's mind, otto is represented by the "handsy" dr. touch (they were fuckin for sure).

meanwhile in bob's mind, a projection of otto says, "we all imagined helmut with someone taller" (suggesting bob is insecure about being good enough for helmut, and SPECIFICALLY worried that otto and helmut... make a better couple?!)

in helmut's memory of the wedding, a figment of otto is in attendance. but in bob's memory of the same event, otto is conspicuously absent.

and [spoilers] says of the old guard's party pad, "i remember this place! we used to fool around on the beanbags! :}" (THEY WERE ALL FUCKIN FOR SURE)

their whole group was a bunch of fringe-of-society hippie psychic weirdos having free love all over the beanbags-- and i think that otto, helmut, and bob in particular were in a loose triadic polycule. i can easily see otto and bob getting high and talking about what a ~feast for the senses~ helmut is, having casual sex, etc. but bob's self esteem was too low to consider that helmut and otto would have anything flattering to say about him when the two of them were alone together.

so like, bob wanted to tie the knot (HE proposed, after all...! very telling...!) and yadda yadda I'm not saying exclusive relationships are evil or that bob didn't love helmut, I LOVE the gay wedding, but i just get the impression that bob's fear of losing helmut to otto factored into that decision somewhat.

and of course otto bowed out because they are all friends here, if they want to be exclusive good for them, his friends are happy and that's what's most important! i genuinely don't think it bothered him, bc otto seems to experience a sort of... modular attraction model? if i can shamelessly project for a moment-- he doesnt seem clingy OR distant. he's fully engaged and invested when he's with someone, yet he's not heartbroken when they leave either, because he doesn't form expectations of other people like that. establish intimacy on a case by case basis, and if you care about each other it doesn't really matter who's kissing who, because kissing is an expression of current preferences and boundaries, not an expression of emotional commitment.

then the showdown with maligula... not only does bob get saved by helmut (survivor's guilt, not feeling good enough or like it should have been him, etc), but otto is responsible for helmut's body being lost. we know otto blames himself, and I'm sure in his grief bob might have been even harder on otto than he was already inclined to be... ):

like, maybe the aftermath of THAT is when all bob's bitterness and insecurity would come bursting out, and otto would feel terrible, because he had no idea bob felt that way-- and if they were two parts of a poly triad they obviously cared about each other, but now bob is hurting too much to accept otto's support when maybe he could rly use it... )':

and i just feel so BAD for otto, because he feels like an aromantic pansexual who was thriving with his friend group and living his best life, and then they all paired off in exclusive romantic and sexual relationships. kind of like, the way cassie's projection of lucy is characterized--? "ooh cassie tried to be my friend, but i was too busy making googley eyes at ford!"

and THEN not only do they (presumably) ostracize him in intimacy, but the fallout from the maligula thing destroys them all, so otto is left to single-handedly create the Psychonauts as a memorial and a legacy for the psychic six. put on a smile, be a source of stability for his friends! but i guess they all just thought that made him cold or uncaring, unrelatable in his comparatively unaffected mental state ):

i mean... otto and ford were the very first of the besties to arrive in green needle gulch. and after everything, ford busted his own brain, so otto can't even commiserate about bygone days with him! otto is all alone! and he is just out here coping and making dumb jokes and doing art and science to constructively vent his feelings about it...!

Desperate to be real, clings to any and all instances of being treated as such. Lied about no longer being a telepath. Heavy empath, which makes crowds difficult. Wants to mend bridges with the Rangers. Feels xeir trip down the route of villain is out of xeir control. Accepted therapy but scared of revealing too much.

Derives name from the shadow of moon, constantly feels like a shadow xemself, falling into darkness and becoming indistinct. Relies primarily on telepathy as Umbra.

Slightly taller than average, long dark hair, dark eyes. Fueled nearly entirely by cigs and ANGER. Has no guilt about using the telepathy as needed. No remorse for being getting in the way of her plans. She wants power to feel in control, to not be haunted by her past, to have strength enough to destroy whatever gets in her way. Had a thing for Ortega, might still have a thing for Ortega. Too flirty for her own interests. Trends hot and cold depending on her mood. Probably the most adjusted with her trauma. Has the least connection with her puppet. You care about me? For real?? HOW DARE YOU.

They are canonically depicted with chronic pain. This a major part of their character development and how they interact with other characters in the campaign. The actor who portrays them is also bisexual and deals with chronic pain; Taliesin Jaffe.

A literal jaded punk rock. They were soft once... and then they turnd into stone. His body was shattered and glued back together by his enby housemate with melted gold. They have a hole in their head covered with glass through which you can see the brain and the chaos magic that brought them back from the brink of death. They're Constantly in pain and sometimes they don't remember who they screwed over(they crime) and what their relationship is like with people. He's a barbarian and when he rages he warps time, space, gravity or probability around him. Strongest member of their group/family Bells Hells. There's strength, but there's pain. There's pain, but there's strength. I love him very much. I'm not enby, they still give me gender envy (just like every other of his creator's characters). His coping mechanisms are not healthy in any way and he means a lot to me.

Robin Buckley-Stranger Things

Qualifications:

Canon lesbian and VERY heavily coded to be neurodivergent in some way (but it's the '80s so she's not catching a diagnosis any time soon). And by very heavily coded I mean literally says the words "I don't really have a filter, or a strong grasp of social cues."

Propaganda:

Canon lesbian with an iconic coming out scene! Is also described as hyper, knows a shit ton about languages (and in fact knows 4 including English) and films and rabies, is bothered by certain textures, is distracted easily but also notices a lot of smaller details, talks very fast, and doesn't have a good grasp of social cues. Also of note is that she mentions taking 6 months longer to walk than most babies, which is notable because developmental delays usually accompany autism. Robin is also noted to be less coordinated or balanced than her peers (to the point that there are a couple moments where another character reassures her about doing something requiring coordination) as well as being a "weird runner." This could possibly point to dyspraxia, which in addition to being it's own thing, is also known to have high rates of comorbidity in those who have ADHD and/or ASD. With all of this in mind, a lot of people see her as having ADHD or Autism, or even having them both. Again, it's not like she can just get diagnosed in the show to confirm it given the time period (hell, it's hard for people, particularly women, to get diagnosed even today). Additionally the lack of vocabulary to properly explain her experiences, or for other characters to do the same in regards to Robin is also due to the time frame (See: "she's hyper", "a weird runner". That being said the first time has the character saying it later befriend her and the latter ends up being used in a more fond manner. Even Robin herself mentions thinking that her whole life is "one big error", because, again she doesn't have any resources to show her what might be going on). As a nice side note, her friends generally treat her well, such as the aforementioned instance of reassuring her in an area she feels less confident in, and her friends in general enjoy her company and stick by her if need be, which I thought was nice (One of whom she has come out to, which makes it all the more meaningful in conservative small town Indiana in the '80s because... yeah.) Basically, there's a lot of evidence and also I just really like her character so here we are. Given season four is where a lot of this comes up, I am whacking away anyone who said she got annoying in season four.

Relationship Status: Relationship anarchist-adjacent

I have some partners and friends that have certain privileges and proximity that others don't, but a lot of that is done by whatever is practical and fair. For example when I look to hangout with partners I usually go by who asked first and/or who I haven't talked to as much recently which are both sort of attempts at fairness even in the context that only one or two of my relationships will probably lead to a structure that's similar to what monogamous people would recognize. Also I'm aromantic so most of my relationships are ??? and some of the oldest ones have romo aspects but barely.

Favorite Color: Varies per headmate, purple is probably current favorite with blue and then green or gold after that. Maybe pink in there somewhere too but that's mostly just from me, Fran.

Favorite Food: Pizza! Maybe something like Mac and cheese or chicken nuggets after that, food is hard lol
