It seems like I’m on a streak of very unsettling books, and I’m loving it.🧚🏻‍♀️✨💅🏻 I’ve heard a lot of mixed opinions about Lapvona but so far I’m enjoying the plot. Yes, it is devastating and, well… gross. BUT the characters are unique and very interesting. They make me feel uneasy because of how unpredictable they are, and I think that’s great in this story. Woke up feeling like I'd slept sounder than I had in a long time, which was nice, but accompanied by a much stronger-than-usual feeling that I don't want to get out of bed, and it soon became obvious that both things are caused by the fact that I have some kind of bug or something, I feel horrible. [interestingly in this passage from the paper (2003) the interest rate/inflation causal chain is reversed from the way policy is employed rn or the assumptions of that policy. the only other place where it seems to me it fails to be at least mostly timely even now is the rhetorical place of its insistence on looking at what sectors are inflationary and how that relates to quality of life/personal wealth. ofc rn basic needs are the real locus of inflation. and ofc “The prospect of wage rises within a goods sector experiencing price deflation appears bleak” is the opposite of what we see rn. but that’s not really an analytical issue per se. frankly the paper doesn’t go far enough in the Raymond Geuss-style political realist direction we might expect from class-conflict oriented kaleckians - i.e. many owning-class economic decisions are treated as in some sense natural/reactive rather than political and the cynicism isn’t strong enough for my tastes... but it expresses the intraclass conflict of the housing market well. anyway i wont claim to have a particularly good grasp on this whole framework]
