EVIL DEAD RISE (2023)
This was a lot of fun, it had a lot of what I like in horror, creeps, spooks, scares, but most importantly the film was good. It stayed pretty simple with its story but went hard on its special effects, the wall crawling was out of sight! Seriously, do yourself a favor and check this out, it is a brutal and wonderful flick produced by Bruce Campbell so you know it is authentic too.
⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
Trigger Warning Projectile Vomiting
After a cute little intro where an Evil Dead Rises out of bed to scalp her friend (then she scalps her other friend a little too close to the shoulders) and we get our glorious title, we go back in time one whole day to meet the dysfunctional family we will be spending the majority of the movie with. We have our mother who just dyed her hair a fiery red, two (2) daughters, one (1) son, and an Aunt who just flew into the picture. Mama Ellie sends her kids away so she and Sister Beth can talk about what has been going on while sis has been away but there is an earthquake! While Mama Ellie worries about her kids, Dan, her son is exploring a newly exposed room and taking things from it (like a big scary book, dun dun dun!). I like how in this version he is attracted to the book but opening it was an accident and when the words started playing on the recordings he tried to stop it but The Evil Dead wouldn’t let him! This makes a lot more sense than when the characters would just sit there while evil scary things were being said!
The creeping evil whooshes along the city streets and into Mama Ellie, causing her great bodily pain but also making her into The Evil Dead Ellie! This scene is like the woodland scenes from The Evil Dead and Evil Dead but it takes place in an elevator with power cords so it is different and fresh feeling. She comes home and tells her family about how she dreams to cut them open and live inside them and they know right away something is very wrong with mom. Both the elevator and the stairs have been destroyed so there is no where they can go but stay in the apartment. Oh, apparently Ellie straight up dies for a little at this point? Okay then.
Ellie comes back to life because, spoiler alert, The Evil Dead are never really dead, and there is this incredible boiling bathtub scene that leads into a longer fight scene that is so gross and creepy, a must watch. They love the “an Evil Dead eats an eyeball then spits it into a human's mouth” gag, they did that in, what, Evil Dead II (correct me if I’m wrong)? They are able to get Evil Ellie out of the apartment because of her bloodlust and the neighbors but she had already gotten her blood into Bridgette (the older daughter) so she was starting to turn in the kitchen. It doesn’t take long before The Evil Dead takes her over completely and she is fighting Aunt Beth, Dan, and Kassie. It is little Kassie who puts an end to her tirade by stabbing her through the head. Brutal! This only puts her down for a small amount of time though and she is right back up stabbing Dan in no time. Yikes. Poor sucker goes down but what else is deserved of the guy who starts the whole thing?
Evil Ellie tunnels through the ceiling to get back into the apartment so things are especially unsafe in there, what with three (3) dead and two (2) Evil Dead just waltzing around. Beth and Kassie break out into the hallway which is lined with dead people which cannot be a good thing and while they try to break out all The Evil Dead come alive and come for them and tell them they are going to die. “Dead by dawn, dead by dawn!” Suddenly the elevator half works, half fills with so much blood it overloads itself and comes crashing into the basement and while that is happening Evil Ellie, Evil Bridgett, and Evil Dan transform into one big Evil Dead Baddie who is unspeakably ugly and honestly seems to be worse than if the three of them just stayed apart but what do I know. It was very reminiscent of Silent Hill and one of the characters in the game (Asphyxia is the character but much less put together).
Actually this whole progression of more villains, harder villains, and even a changing villain makes this movie feel like a video game and I quite like that, it is a very fun aspect of the film. Some sort of tree cutting company parks its cars in the basement which is good luck for Beth but also for us because we get some classic Evil Dead chainsaw scenes! After a struggle and almost losing Kassie (eep!) Beth has the three headed creature on the ropes and finds an economic way to chop the thing to bits, thus saving the day! Hooray! The creeping evil still hangs around and comes for the next unsuspecting victim which is who we met at the top of the film, but hey, at least little Kassie is safe.

The Spine of Night (2021) The rotoscoped animation is pretty low budget but man, the dark fantasy vibes are off the charts. If you're a fan of stuff like Heavy Metal or Fire and Ice, you'll probably dig this. On Shudder.

The Spine of Night

Movies watched in 2024
The Spine of Night (2021, USA)
Directors & Writers: Philip Gelatt & Morgan Galen King
Mini-review:
This was a weird experience for me. It has such rich and original lore, paired with a beautiful aesthetic, even if the character animation takes a bit to get used to. And yet, I couldn't help but feel pretty bored throughout most of it. Does that mean it's a bad movie? Definitely not, but I think I'm just not the target audience for it. Still, The Spine of Night is worth a watch if you're looking for a unique and visually stunning take on the dark fantasy genre.

BEST DOCUMENTARIES OF 2024
Documentary as a genre can encompass any medium: feature film, TV mini-series, or even podcasts. Here are my picks for the best Docs of the Year:
Honorable Mentions:
The Road to Ruane Scott Evans / Michael Gill
Steve! (Martin) Morgan Neville
Devo Chris Smith
Piece By Piece Morgan Neville
10. Kings from Queens: The Run DMC Story Kirk Fraser
9. Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band Thom Zimny
8. Music By John Williams Laurent Bouzereau
7. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story Ian Bonhote / Peter Ettedgui
6. Apollo 13: Survival Peter Middleton
5. Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos Alex Gibney
Gibney gives The Sopranos the 2-part documentary treatment with the show’s creator. As a fan I could’ve watched Gibney and Chase talk all day!
4. Will & Harper Josh Greenbaum
Documenting the road trip between comic superstar Will Farrell and his friend and collaborator Harper Steele following their transition shows a lot about friendship and love between two longtime friends as well as America’s reaction.
3. God Save Texas Richard Linklater / Alex Stapleton / Liliana Sosa
This docu-series looks at the past, present and future of Texas from a lot of different perspectives, but Linklater’s episode about the prison industrial system is riveting.
2. Beatles ‘64 David Tedeschi
60 years later, looking back at the year that The Beatles took the world by storm, there’s still some rare unseen footage that is captivating to see!
1. Flipside Chris Wilcha
Director Wilcha turns the camera on himself as he returns to the NJ record store he used to work at and tries to help revive and look back at his own abandoned film projects. But it’s really symbolic of aging Gen Xers trying to get back to their creative rebellious nature they once had as they get older and deal with the real world. Of all the docs I saw in 2024, this one truly spoke to me and had something to say about finishing what you start and what it means to hang onto (and let go of) physical media!

INTERVIEW
The List
21 Apr – 4 May 1995
It’s a wonderful life
With the dust only just beginning to settle on PETER CAPALDI’s Oscar, the Scottish actor is regaining his sense of perspective. He speaks to Kathleen Morgan.
[transcript under the cut]
For someone who has just been catapulted into the world of Oscar winners, Peter Capaldi is sounding rather tetchy. Days after the golden award was thrust into his sweaty palms under the gaze of a worldwide television audience of about a billion people, the actor is desperate to inject some reality back into his life.
That has involved beating off a string of journalists he believes are determined to wrap his achievement in tartan. The fact that Capaldi’s directorial debut Franz Kafka’s It’s A Wonderful Life attracted a coveted Hollywood accolade is utterly divorced from the small matter of his Scottish roots. Anyone who dares suggest otherwise is likely to feel the rough edge of a nippy sweetie.
‘Scottish journalists want your Scottishness to be what people love, but it’s in a kind of kitsch way,’ says Capaldi in an impeccable Bishopbriggs accent. ‘It’s liberating to be Scottish, and also to be appreciated as a creative person.’
Behind his reluctance to play the Scottish card, Capaldi is immensely proud of winning the award for best short live action film with Franz Kafka – a black comedy starring Richard E. Grant and Capaldi’s wife Elaine Collins. Funded by the Scottish Film Production Fund and BBC Scotland, the 25-minute Tartan Short has attracted not only a lump of metal for his London mantelpiece, but the attention of Hollywood executives, craved by any aspiring filmmaker. It is not the blissful memory of thirty seconds of fame Capaldi relishes, but the prospect of directing a full-length feature film. Without the tartan bows.
In the days before his Oscar-winning performance at the Los Angeles event, Capaldi was busy touting the script for Moon Man – ‘a sort of film noir comedy fantasy.’ Days afterwards, he believes he has bagged a deal which would see his dream become a reality. Until it is signed and sealed, he is unwilling to divulge the details, but he stresses his commitment to using Scottish actors if – when – it goes ahead.
Capaldi is in no doubt where his loyalties lie. They are certainly not rooted in a dewy-eyed devotion to Scotland. ‘I would like to do a large section of the film in Glasgow, but I don’t know if I’ll be allowed to do that,’ he says. ‘I will certainly use a large number of Scottish people, but my loyalty is to the project. It’s a bit difficult to be curtailed by meaningless nationalistic instincts. I don’t see the point in filming something in Glasgow when it’s more economic to film it somewhere else.’
Tough talking from the 33-year-old actor who in 1983 captured the heart of a nation in Bill Forsyth’s gentle comedy Local Hero. The film that put the north-east fishing village of Pennan and its public phone box on the cinematic map, also proved a turning point for Capaldi. An aspiring actor, Capaldi had caught the eye of Forsyth, who decided he was a safe bet and plunged him into the role of the blundering Oldsen. ‘I was thrown in at the deep end, doing something I had wanted to do five years before,’ says Capaldi, adding in typical monotones: ‘It was scary.’
It was also a triumph for someone who had been rejected for drama school in London and had gone to Glasgow School of Art instead – a move that pleased his parents, who believed his career prospects had improved as a result. ‘They always supported me, but were worried for me because they were just ordinary folk,’ says Capaldi. ‘You move into a world they don’t understand – it saddens and hurts them because it’s not as if they can talk to someone who might be able to get you a wee job somewhere. They really wanted me to go to art school and do the drama on the side like any other responsible, normal person.’
On Oscar night, Capaldi’s family was no doubt relieved he had chosen to ignore his responsible, normal impulses and pursue a career in film. Since his often hilarious face was launched on the big screen in Local Hero, he has had a few memorable, if sporadic successes. In 1988, he was John Malkovich’s Machiavellian side-kick in Dangerous Liaisons and in 1992, he wrote and starred in the wonderfully frustrating feel-good movie Soft Top, Hard Shoulder. Based unashamedly on his own Italian-Glasgow family background, it captured the agonies and ecstasies felt by anyone who has made a long, nostalgic journey from London to Glasgow.
Ask Capaldi about his roots and you are likely to get a scathing reply. ‘People would rather like to imagine you have a family with the mother cooking spaghetti,’ he says. When pushed, he reveals his Italian grandfather moved to Glasgow from a village south of Rome: ‘He started off as a shepherd. His business was vagrancy and he moved into ice cream.’
Capaldi has lived in London for eleven years, but wants to move back to Glasgow with Collins and their young daughter. He will do so when he feels he can tap into the film world and make money, without having to apologise for his home address. For now, he is still dealing with what he regards as the patronizing attitude rampant in London television and film circles – something he escaped from briefly in Los Angeles. ‘Your Scottishness is not an issue there,’ he says. ‘People are not discreetly saying you should be going off making a wee Scottish film people don’t want to see, whereas in London, there’s an instinctive agenda.’
It has not been easy so far. Capaldi freely admits there have been mistakes along the way, largely obscured by a lack of media interest: ‘No one wants to hear stories of miserable mediocrity.’ For a few people in the Capaldi household and in the film industry, his most recent achievement was a complete surprise. Bishopbriggs or Beverly Hills-bound, Capaldi sounds like he is capable of a few more like it.
Peter Capaldi stars in Runway One, a comedy thriller due to be broadcast by the BBC in August.

Ruth Inge Hardison (February 3, 1914 – March 23, 2016) was a sculptor, artist, and photographer, known for her busts entitled “Negro Giants in History”. Her collection called “Our Folks”, which features sculpted portraits of everyday people is of note. Her artistic productions surround historical African American portraiture, and she was interested in representing the unspoken voices of the African American past. She was the only woman in the Black Academy of Arts and Letters.
She was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, her family moved to Brooklyn. She acted in the Broadway Productions of “Sweet River” and “Country Wife”. She began sculpting as a hobby. When she took part in the year-long “What a Life” production, she created a sculpture of its cast, which was displayed at the Mansfield Theatre. She studied Music and Creative Writing at Vassar College. She studied at the Art Students League of New York and Tennessee State University.
Her works began as clay, wax, or plaster molds, and were cast into cast stone or bronze. Her first bust in that series was of Harriet Tubman, which measured eight inches in height; she has created busts of W. E. B. Du Bois, Paul Robeson, George Washington Carver, Frederick Douglass, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Sojourner Truth, and Mary McLeod Bethune, among others. Her bronze Douglass bust, for example, was unveiled at Princeton’s Firestone Library. Other public works include a 7-foot abstract figure called “Jubilee” which stands on the campus of Medgar Evers College, a series of 18 children on an outdoor wall of I.S.74 in Hunts Point in the Bronx, and a five-foot mother and child given to Mount Sinai Hospital to express her gratitude for their help in delivering her only child. She created a series of Ingenious Americans, little-known African American inventors, and other notables commissioned and sold by Old Taylor Whiskey. The series of nine busts included Benjamin Banneker, Charles Richard Drew, Matthew Henson, Frederick McKinley Jones, Lewis Latimer, Garrett Morgan, Norbert Rillieux, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, and Granville Woods. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
