The Spine of Night (2021) The rotoscoped animation is pretty low budget but man, the dark fantasy vibes are off the charts. If you're a fan of stuff like Heavy Metal or Fire and Ice, you'll probably dig this. On Shudder.

Movies watched in 2024
The Spine of Night (2021, USA)
Directors & Writers: Philip Gelatt & Morgan Galen King
Mini-review:
This was a weird experience for me. It has such rich and original lore, paired with a beautiful aesthetic, even if the character animation takes a bit to get used to. And yet, I couldn't help but feel pretty bored throughout most of it. Does that mean it's a bad movie? Definitely not, but I think I'm just not the target audience for it. Still, The Spine of Night is worth a watch if you're looking for a unique and visually stunning take on the dark fantasy genre.

Two scientists living in a module in the woods are searching for a breakthrough in unusual animal behavior. The area they are researching was the site of a cult massacre. Strange things start happening.
They Remain (2018) is a paranoid waking nightmare. It sets a mood where you’re never exactly sure what is going on or how much time has passed, and that kind of scares you too. There’s an ambiguity that some viewers will not care for, but I enjoy the uncertainty of what is and isn’t real. William Jackson Harper and Rebecca Henderson are both fantastic.
This film is also an allegory for the biblical story of Adam and Eve. A man and woman living together in nature, seeking knowledge, receiving instructions from their employer, and being called by a voice in the trees. I think it really works, and I felt like turning on all the lights after it ended.
