percy — he and sally went/still go on grocery trips, and he rants to annabeth if the price goes up. want to know how the economy's doing? ask percy about bread prices.

demigods who do not know how much an average loaf of bread from the store costs:

annabeth — maybe back when she was with luke and thalia, but she's been in camp half-blood for most of her life. bread just appears on a plate in front of her, who is she to question it.

frank — he's a nepo baby.

hazel — she's been dead for 70 years. seeing what the price has been inflated to now may kill her.

jason — he was raised by wolves. lupa does not have time to worry about the inflation rate of bread.

nico — he was cut off from modern society for 70 years.

piper — she's also a nepo baby. and she spent a lot of time shoplifting, so the illusion of cost doesn't apply to her.

The mischaracterization of people from PJO is so funny, but ESPECIALLY from HOO onward like.

Hazel, who’s always ready to fight in the same way Percy is? Hazel, who made it explicitly clear she probably would’ve rocked Octavian’s shit had he not been blackmailing her? Who gets so angry on behalf of the people she loves, to the point where she doesn’t forgive those who have wronged them? Who Percy described as cursing up a storm in one of their first interactions? Who’s been shown time and time again to be FAST to anger? That Hazel?

Or Nico, who’s “a misunderstood emo. A small bean. Cute like a wet cat and innocent like a bunny.”

Nico, who’s cannonically described by most characters as “scary and unnerving?” Nico, who, for a long time, is one of the angriest characters in the series? Who’s only sassy and sarcastic because it took him FOUR YEARS to mellow out? Who’s described as being one of the most powerful demigods, who a lot of people still consider the scariest? Who’s come into his own as a character from TTC to TSATS? That Nico?

Or Annabeth who’s, “cold and calculating. Doesn’t show emotion or express herself”

Annabeth, who’s the most expressive person in the series? Who cries in EVERY book in the OG series? Whether it be for Luke, or Thalia, or Percy, or Chiron, or a literal DOG? Who expresses passion like no other when it comes to architecture and her other interests? Who’s expressed compassion for people she didn’t know? People who at times posed a threat to her? Who isn’t afraid to be angry, or happy, or snide, or rude, or excited, or scared, or ecstatic? Who’s been unapologetically herself since the moment the series started? That’s who doesn’t show emotion? That’s Annabeth?

a huge chunk of the pjo fandom has turned into such a superficial, judgemental and PROBLEMATIC group who defeat the purpose and point that the books were trying to make, it's so fucking atrocious. the prime example of mischaracterizing/reducing the value of characters who are already misunderstood/misjudged in canon. this fandom does this to every.single.character.ever omg

percy jackson is so relatable to many people is because he didn't have to capacity to absorb textbook knowledge but was HIGH on street smart knowledge that got him to succeed. the whole point of his character is that he had low self esteem because he was ridiculed at school by the faculty and the students for being a 'dumb' and 'useless' guy that made him think he's an inconvenience to his mom. the baggage he carried is so overlooked.

the fandom saying stuff like 'annabeth had adhd and dyslexia too but she carried percy' is so fucking disrespectful. one, she's an athena kid who's supposed to be smart that's like the whole point, and that does NOT mean percy wouldn't survive without her. he's a DIFFERENT character and he doesn't need to be a scholar to be a powerful demigod who has his own identity. stop belittling him and comparing all of their adhd/dyslexia struggles. just because annabeth is smarter does NOT mean percy has less value than her, and that whatever comes out of his mouth is just silly gibberish, which is exactly what y'all are trying to imply. no he did NOT get by with just "luck" he's smart and capable enough to actually achieve things. It isn't rocket science.

making jokes like his only purpose is to have a goofy personality and wondering how he 'pulled' annabeth is NOT cute whatsoever. just deprives him of his canon developement and fails to recognise him as an important person because he is not book smart. the level of belittlement. in a way rick also contributes to this character assassination because he added another scene of piper saying something along the lines of 'thank god annabeth is there to keep percy from going wild/doing something stupid' like no miss girl

I could go on about how the fandom infantilizes nico, brushes of hazel's flaws/traits because she's a 'smol' bean (when she literally cusses out octavian, why do y'all hate the idea of her being bold/badass when she literally is??) belittling frank's power because he's 'just an innocent goof', saying stuff like 'in my head leo is a tall guy because rick did him dirty with the height when he is so hot' that's basically implying that he loses his attractiveness because he's short and wanting to confine him into those toxic masculinity standards

slandering rachel and calling her a pick me for liking annabeth as though annabeth already had a claim over percy in BOTL when he wasn't even in a relationship and even had a small liking to rachel (belittling BOTH rachel and percy in the process, is percy not allowed to have feelings too? is he only obligated to like annabeth?), also with the fandom's clear misogyny in their treatment of nico liking percy vs rachel liking percy, go on a moral policing hunt when it comes to jason, piper and percy but goes right ahead to defend and glaze luke's behaviour to annabeth, percy and silena (also victim blaming silena because she was manipulated as a teenager by a fully grown adult who KNEW what he was doing, using her)

stubbornly not wanting to recognise jason as an important character and reducing him into a 'whiney pick me guy who wanted everything to be about himself' and that he's 'boring' not realising that his abusive environment both as a baby and as a teenager suppressed him into struggling and not being able to feel worthy to even have feelings of his own, villianizing and getting on pipers throat for calling percy unimpressive simply because she LOVED and was LOYAL to her then boyfriend?? is she not allowed to have a preference??? heck id be more concerned if she did call percy hot whilst being in a relationship wtf.

and DONT get me started on the grover belittlement and erasure please, saying that percy and grover are only annabeth's 'sidekicks' on quests, as though he wasn't capable to go on a hunt for pan all by HIMSELF not knowing he'll ever be back.

jason's whole 'fighting a titian with his bare hands' is hardly mentioned in heroes of olympus and i firmly believe its because rick didn't want jason to see powerful and we see that with hazel & nico to their accomplishments are pushed to the side to make percy seem better percy is extremely powerful and has great feats and accomplished many things even gods haven't but hazel literally took down gaea and jason fought a titain with his bare hands when he was 14/15 its like the seven (frank, jason, and hazel especially) never get to see there fully potential because no one can be better than percy

Okay, so I like to imagine that all pjo characters have some weird traits from their powers that really aren't that noticeable unless you point it out, so here is my list of weird traits they all have

Percy: gets dehydrated really easily, needs way more water than the average person. Also, his hands get wrinkles faster in water (like under 5 minutes)

Jason: has a lot of static around him all the time, shocks people every time he touches them. Also, he's just completely given up on trying to get his hair to sit normally

Hazel: has really spatial awareness, but only when she is outside in contact with dirt. She also hates concrete with a burning passion, like it blocks her senses almost, and it just feels weird. Let that girl roll around in the grass

Piper: never gets a sore throat, like literally never, she can be surrounded by people with strep throat and never get sick

Leo: has never gotten a cold or the flu because his body is so naturally hot that a virus can't survive inside him. He also has a larger lung capacity and is always taking deep breaths, like he needs a lot of oxygen, and he can not hold his breath for longer than 10 seconds, no matter how hard he tries

Nico: is really food at figuring out and manipulating someone's fears. Like he knows someone's fear within 3 seconds of being near them. Also, he can never be snuck up on because he just knows if someone is near him (he is sensing their soul, and that's why) but large crows also suck because all those souls get overwhelming

Frank: Complete disney princess vibes, is really good at understanding what an animal wants due to body language and animals are just drawn to him, birds will just land on him at random points of the day if he is outside

Annabeth: really good situational awareness and is really good at coming to compromises. She can get two complete opposing sides to agree on something if she tries hard enough. Battle tactics also mean diplomatic solutions

Will: can tell if someone is sick just by looking at them, can also tell what that disease is if he touches them. Also, he never gets sunburned

When you really think about it, Percy Jackson comes off worse than most of the other protagonists in the Heroes of Olympus series. Who wiped Iapetus's memory and then left him to rot? Percy did. Who promised to one day come back for Calypso, only to forget all about her? Percy did. Who asked for recognition for the minor gods, but only cared about a handful of them? Percy.

But you actually visited and checked on Iapetus? Nico. Who actually went back for Calypso? Leo. Who actually made sure all deities got honoured? Jason. Percy never lived up to the potential and the hype that Rick Riordan built around him. He's probably one of the most boring protagonists. I still remember how he initially felt ashamed to have Tyson as a brother. I know that he felt that way because of peer pressure and everything, but it still makes me uncomfortable to think about.

So I think that's my problem with Percy Jackson. Some of his character traits are relatable, but not nearly enough. He feels like a very three dimensional character, but he's also not that relatable to me. Percy was a kid who always got in trouble at school. I'm the kid who never speaks, and subsequently is usually tolerated. I was bullied once in grade 4, but that was it. Most of the time, nobody in school seems to hate me (I suppose it is hard to hate someone who never expresses themself, though). I feel more kinship with Nico di Angelo, Jason Grace, Frank Zhang, etc. I don't hate Percy, but he's not going to be in my top five favorite characters from Rick Riordan's books.

I LOVE LOVE LOVEE how its canon that Jason is super physically clingy and just generally really giddy and adorable while he's excited. This is shown multiple times it warms my heart 🥹 also he canonically gives out the best hugs too which is super refreshing since everyone always assumes that he's cold and intimidating 🥹🔫

a few examples of this from the books:

When he bear hugged Percy after he came back to tartarus. (HoH)

When opened his arms out to nico excitedly after he said he'd stay at Camp half blood. And gave him the most bone crushing hug ever after nico gave permission (Boo)

When he excitedly leaned in and kissed Piper after she figured out the meaning of the Storm/Fire line in the prophecy. (HoH)

When he was super excited to talk about Roman historic leaders he kept yapping on and on about them to the point he didn't even realize that Leo was mocking him, bc he was just too excited (HoH)

When apollo noted that Jason's eyes noticeably "brightened" after he mentioned to jason that Thalia said hello. (TOA)

When he wanted Thalia to stay w him in the lost hero and talk more :(
