BAND AU SPOILERS AHEAD

“Oh,” Jade says. She doesn’t say anything else, just moves her hands down to Kit’s left hip, where the zipper on her leather pants is stuck halfway up, the arc of her underwear visible. She sighs softly. “Kit. You could’ve asked me for help. I was right there. I wouldn’t have minded.” 

“You were busy,” Kit says. The zipper is just the tip of the iceberg tonight, but it’s the only thing Jade could possibly fix right now. “And it’s not just…”

Jade sighs again, more tired than exasperated, Kit thinks. She doesn’t say anything else, just jiggles the zipper until it unsticks, then runs it down and back up, until it gets stuck halfway again. 

“Um.” Jade says, face falling. She jiggles at the zipper again, but it doesn’t move. “You’re right. It is stuck.” 

Kit makes a face. Obviously she was right. They’re her damn pants. “Great. Now what?” 

“Don’t you have, like, twelve pairs of these?” Jade asks.

“Not here,” Kit says. They’re all at Sorsha’s, or the dry-cleaners, or crumpled on Jade’s floor.

“We could get a safety pin or something?” Jade suggests. 

“Jade! We are not putting a safety pin through my leather pants.” Kit has to hold back an actual gasp. The very thought…

“God, I don’t know, then, Kit! You could just leave it. It’s fine. They’ll stay. They’re basically spray-painted to your butt.”

Hi Graydon! And you must be Elora,” Jade says, a cheerful pitch in her voice.

Last week, Jade, in a move of total betrayal, invited Kit’s childhood friend, Graydon, to try out for their band. Graydon offered to bring his friend, Elora, a singer. Kit is not enthused about trialing Elora in the slightest–they don’t need another singer. Kit’s just fine, thank you very much. And she doesn’t know Elora from a sack of bricks. At least she likes Graydon, trusts him not to be weird about her family, knows he’s probably incredibly talented on bass, because he was always the kind of kid who succeeded at everything he tried his hand at, including stupid macaroni art projects in elementary school.

Sorsha nods at her and leaves them. Graydon pushes Elora into the studio and lets the door shut behind them. He’s carrying an unwieldy bass case.

“Hi again,” Graydon says.

“Hi!” Elora says. Kit immediately narrows her eyes at her. She carries a “sun’s out” tote bag on her shoulder (gag), and she twirls a strand of her hair around her finger nervously.

Jade obliges her after an awkward moment that Kit has absolutely no problem extending. “I’m Jade,” she says. “This is Kit.”

“Hi,” Kit says.

Jade purses her lips.

“I love that song!” Elora says. “I prepared a couple of songs but if you want we can just do that.”

“Uh, Elora is the girl I told you about before. She’s a really great singer,” Graydon says. Upon being more formally introduced, Elora perks up.

“It’s so nice to meet you all!” Elora says, holding out a hand to shake. Kit’s hands grip her guitar a little harder. Kit’s only known her for two seconds, but she seems infuriatingly upbeat. Like all of her sentences end in punctuation other than a period. Elora’s gaze travels over both of their faces before settling on Kit’s and her eyes widen slightly as she seems to take in the person in front of her.

“Oh, you’re Madmartigan and Sorsha’s daughter, right? Gray didn’t mention that! Let me tell you, I felt like I was dreaming when Sorsha Tanthalos opened the front door.”

Kit bristles at the mention of her parents. Elora better not be one of those weird obsessed fans of her parents’ band. “Yes,” she says, cautiously, pushing some hair out of her eyes. “Are you going to be a weird fangirl about it? We actually don’t need a singer if you are.”

“Oh, no, it’s not like that! It’s just a small world, I guess. Willow is my godfather, I’ve heard a lot about you because of the whole band and everything, you know?”

“Well I’ve heard nothing about you,” Kit says. Which is true. Her mom and Willow had a falling out when she was a little kid, all around the same time her dad…

Anyway. It’s not like anyone was eager for stories about Willow’s goddaughter.

“Oh,” Elora’s face falls, “Well, I guess that makes sense.”

“So. You gonna sing or are we gonna plot out our family trees?” Kit grumbles; Jade elbows her lightly. “What?”

“Be nice,” Jade says, and Kit huffs. “Whenever you’re ready, Elora. Maybe just something you prepared? We can do You Belong With Me later.”

Kit glares. They absolutely will not be doing You Belong With Me with this random girl. It’s a Kit and Jade specialty.

Graydon gives Elora a little thumbs up, which is funny, since he’s not even confirmed to be in the band. Kit sighs, resigned to the fact that she’s going to have to at least hear Elora out.

“Can I use this?” Elora asks, tapping the keyboard that they occasionally use when they need more than their guitar and drums.

“Yep,” Jade says, giving her an encouraging gesture. Kit sighs deeply and Jade shoots her another capital-L Look.

Elora settles herself behind the keyboard, pressing a few buttons, tapping a couple of keys until she’s satisfied.

Jade picks up the mic stand that they rarely use and shifts it over in front of the keyboard. Elora looks obviously out of her depth with a real microphone. The last time she performed was probably some high school talent show.

She fiddles with the stand for a few seconds before Graydon intervenes and raises it to the right height for her.

“Thanks,” she says, smiling cheerfully at him and then turning it on Kit and Jade. Kit ups the scowl factor a bit. Jade smiles sunnily and steps unsubtly on Kit’s toes.

Kit steps backwards, glaring at her.

Elora places her hands on the keyboard and taps out a note.

Oh, no.
