(Sorry for the late Tumblr update; Rachel's laptop is attempting to join the happy haunts.)
CONTENT ADVISORY: because the 2023 film version of The Haunted Mansion involves convincing a living soul to die and join the happy haunts, this episode discusses suicide.
Welcome, foolish mortals, to Wonderful World of Darklords! We are your hosts--your podcast hosts. Kindly load the full episode, and make room (on your hard drive) for every byte. There's no turning back now. Unless you stop listening five minutes in, I suppose. There's always that way out...
This episode is primarily drawing on the 2023 Haunted Mansion movie since it has a darklord and a plot, but if you prefer other versions of the Mansion, don't worry; we're incorporating as many as possible. Topics discussed include:
How to give Alistair Crump, a fun but cartoonishly evil villain, an element of tragedy and relatability;
How to essentially turn the Haunted Mansion into Hill House, Hell House, or the Overlook;
Alternate versions of the domain that highlight other ghosts as the darklord or boss, including Ramsley the butler, Constance Hatchaway, Henry Ravenswood, or even Madam Leota;
So, so, SO many mechanics from the older material to represent hauntings;
And more!

Grim Grinning Gauntlet, Michael Loving's version of the haunted mansion as a pure dungeon crawl, is available here:Â https://www.dmsguild.com/product/254923/Grim-Grinning-Gauntlet

OTD in Music History: Legendary composer, conductor, and virtuoso pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873 - 1943) makes his first public appearance as a concert pianist, at the âMoscow Electrical Exhibitionâ in 1892. Among other things, he performed his own âMorceaux de Fantaisieâ (Op. 3) -- a then-four-part piano suite which included one of the most famous pieces he would ever compose, the âPrelude in c#.â Rachmaninoff was paid 50 rubles for this appearance. That doesn't mean much to us today... so as a point of comparison, we can note that he was paid only *40* rubles (which was still approximately two monthsâ worth of wages for a common factory worker in Russia at that time) by a music publisher in exchange for the *copyright* to the entire âMorceaux de Fantaisieâ set. Of course, had Rachmaninoff merely held onto the copyright in the Prelude in c# *alone*, it would have made him a fortune down the line⊠Rachmaninoff originally conceived of the âMorceauxâ as a set of four pieces, but he ended up adding a fifth piece after reading an interview which Pyotr Tchaikovsky (1840 â 1893) granted to a Russian newspaper critic a few weeks after his debut public concert, in which he cited Rachmaninoff as one of the most outstanding young musicians in Russia. Rachmaninoff idolized Tchaikovsky, and was thrilled by this praise. As he later recounted: "I immediately sat down at the piano and composed a fifth piece (the âSerenadeâ) on the spot." Rachmaninov premiered this five-piece version of the suite at a subsequent concert appearance in December 1892, and two months later he also gave Tchaikovsky one of the first copies of the newly-published score to the set. (Tchaikovsky loved it.) PICTURED: A c. 1900 real photo postcard, showing a young Rachmaninoff as he would have appeared at the beginning of his international concert career.

My dear friend's account for their podcast, Wonderful World of Darklords, is locked out of Tumblr for mysterious reasons (read: Tumblr bot failure). And on the day of their monthly episode drop too, so I am posting for them. My friends take inspiration from Disney films (well, normally...in April they do non-Disney) and convert them into Ravenloft Domains of Dread. I write a small portion of the show as "Yensid" (aka Azalin using a false name) , the warlock D's patron who writes up the reports on each of these Domains. Anyway, here is their pitch. Give it a listen if you're interested: Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! In the spirit of April Fool's Day, we're once again taking a break from Disney movies for this month's episode (yes, we know Disney distributed the Ghiblis for a while, but we operate under strict Calvinball rules in which Home Alone can be a regular episode but Princess Mononoke can't). There's so much nightmare fuel in Princess Mononoke that it's almost redundant to turn it into a horror setting, but turning it into a Ravenloft domain is another matter entirely. Topics discussed include:
How to give Irontown and the forest an unforgivable, irredeemable darklord when one of the movie's main themes is that no one is unforgivable or irredeemable (except Jigo, who we're going to discuss a lot);
A Disney movie that we will never, ever make an episode about, but that actually has quite a bit of thematic overlap with Princess Mononoke, so you can just pretend this is that episode if you want;
Multiple AU possibilities for the darklord, ranging from "fairly obvious" to "high-concept fever dream;"
The canon darklord who can fill the same role as Lord Asano but with more personality;
and more!
The full writeup for the Mononoke Forest is available for free on DM's Guild:Â https://www.dmsguild.com/product/476619/Mononoke-Forest-A-Ravenloft-Domain-of-Dread?affiliate_id=241770

Quelle merveille !

"Of course. Art is a blessingâI'm particular towards music myself."
"It's been an experience learning of the different composers they have in other worlds...I seem to be partial to Rachm*nioff at the moment. Have you heard of his Morceaux de fantaisie? The prelude in C sharp is a favorite."
â Â : My muse and others. (If they social and outgoing or more introverted, and why. If they prefer communicating with others face to face or in written form, e.t.c.).Â
he's a bit of both, but he's definitely more used to being an introvert. he thinks a lot, and it was easy for him to spend days without saying anything if he didn't find someone worth talking to. (also because being in charge of a brainwashed army means everyone listens to you and understands exactly what you mean with the least amount of words.)
his long monologues now are basically...his thoughts taking spoken form.
socializing was a pointless activity until he met klaus, and then it was fun. talking with others face-to-face is much preferred, because he can read micro-expressions that way, which are very interesting for him! but if he hates your guts it's better to stick to letters (or text...).

Magdalena Bay | Imaginal Disk
đ§ Cry for Me
Nala Sinephro | Endlessness
Water Damage | In E
NilĂŒfer Yanya | My Method Actor

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! In the spirit of Thanksgiving and of thankfulness for you, our listeners, we're presenting the domain you chose in our Listeners' Choice poll: Spirited Away. Yubaba is an excellent villain, Chihiro's parents and No-Face give us some phenomenal horror moments, and we actually see the bathhouse's borders close in the first twenty minutes of the movie...but the bathhouse feels more like a Domain of Delight than of Dread, and Yubaba doesn't have much of a backstory even in ancillary materials, so we had our work cut out for us. Topics discussed include:
An Act of Ultimate Darkness and element of tragedy/relatability for Yubaba that plays into some themes we might not have been able to work into the domain otherwise;
Why Zeniba and Yubaba hate each other with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns, and how to play up that rivalry in a way that lends itself to more traditional D&D antics than Ghibli movies typically allow;
How to get your PCs to seek out jobs in the bathhouse and sign their names away to Yubaba even though there's no way in the Nine Hells they're going to think it's a good idea;
The sorts of adventures one can have in a setting that doesn't lend itself to combat, puzzle-solving, or the disarming of traps;
and more!
