Sorry if this annoys you, but I was wondering if you were ever going to finish Shiratorizawa Antics? bc on your ao3 it says there’s only 2 chapters left for it

I reread it frequently and I’m sorry if you’ve already talked about it, I’m just wondering if it’s discontinued or something?

hey no worries, you’re good. I’m still working on the final 2 chapters for SA and I don’t plan on discontinuing it. currently aiming to finish the series before the olympics end, but we’ll see about that!

Fire and Water

The current scene of my comic has a whole lot of this goin’ on

....so I wanted to share how I’m doing the fire and water effects xD To start with, I’m using Medibang Paint Pro, but this can probably be done in Photoshop using the same blending options. The brushes used (other than default) were from Yuumei’s cloud tutorial which I repurpose for.........a lot.

Fire

Use an airbrush and just sorta squiggle on the shape you’re going for. Erase a bit to give it fiery tendrils.

Duplicate the layer twice, so you’ve got this:

On Under Fire A, change the hue of the layer to yellow. Run it through a gaussian blur of ~20 to get this:

For Under Fire B, change the hue to red and run it through a gaussian blur of ~5-10:

Set both layers Under Fire A and Under Fire B to the ‘Add’ blending mode. This will give the fire a nice glowy outline:

Duplicate the base Fire layer again, and make it white. How I usually do color-switches like this is just lock the transparency of the layer (Protect Alpha) and then drop a rectangle of color over it.

Gaussian blur it, change the blending mode to “Add”, and reduce the opacity of the layer to ~65% (with fire and glowy things, there’s a lot of “blur+add”)

Duplicate the base fire layer again (leave it the orange this time), blur it a bit, switch to “Add” at ~50% capacity

Select the Fire layer and contract the select by ~10-15. Then, on a new layer, fill the selection with white, blending mode “Add”, ~70% opacity:

For particle effects (like embers and water splashes), this is where it gets a little woogly. I’m using Yuumei’s Whispy Cloud Brush, which I imported into Medibang with the following settings:

Using that brush, I drop some scattered motes like

Then I duplicate that layer, make the motes white, switch it to “Add” to make them more glowy:

Water

Water usually starts out with mooshing out the basic shape with a sorta taupe-y color. Your color choice may vary, it’s just the setting of my world casting everything in red that does this for me:

Once the base color is down, I use a watercolor-brush and add some “texture” to the water--what you see under the sorta smokey stuff. I added the smokey texture using Yuumei’s thick cloud brush to give it a bit more darkness in that spot. There’s a lot of coming back to adjust as the effect is built up.

You also see on this layer some splatters. These were added later on using the base water color and the standard Medibang Splatter brush.

Make a new clipping layer above the water base and smudge some white on there with the watercolor brush. I try to sorta follow where the water would “fold” (which in this case was along the stone’s edges):

On a new clipping layer (”Multiply” blending mode, ~75% opacity) I add a bit of shading. The water’s directly in the light here so the shading was more a soft gradient and some where the water folds around the rocks:

On a new clipping layer, with a thin white hard brush, add some wooshes where in the direction of the water’s flow:

On a new clipping later, using the splatter brush, I added some BIG white splatters and then smudged them up a bit. Switch the layer to Overlay ~30%:

And some more splatters using the base water color on a normal clipping later at 30% opacity:

Then to make the color more watery, I made a new clipping layer, Overlay, ~75% opacity. On that layer I added a teal overlay:

Change the base water later to 80% opacity to make it translucent:

For the seafoam, I mostly go nuts with Yuumei’s cloudbrush along the edges and folds of the water on a new layer (not clipping) with the Add blending mode at 75% opacity. To make it more splashy, I also added particle effects on the same layer using the splatter brush:

Lastly, I made a new layer under the foam at around 50% opacity. On that layer, I added some soft white fog using the fluffy cloud brush to give it a sort of misty effect:

All in all, there’s a lot of steps, but the important thing is they’re easily repeatable.

Not to be literally the biggest sap ever but I didn’t think I ever thought about the shiratorizawa guys until I came across your fic. I liked Semi and Shirabu mainly and found it through the latter’s tags and it changed my life. Everyone is so ridiculously in character (!!!) and I love Goshiki’s development specifically…

The scream i let out when the shiratorizawa antics chapter came out!!! I knew, i knew that mc was gonna end up with ushijima! The vibes were there and their back and forth was subtle and immaculate! I shall patiently wait in anticipation for the epilogue! My question would also be, when did you decide on ushijima being endgame?

I think you may have gotten the vibe for like... the first 8-ish chapters, I was going hog wild with the things I wrote..... no plan.... no drafts.... just pure vibes from noon to midnight writing whatever the hell I wanted (thanks pandemic). starting from chap 9 (a conversation with ushijima) to the end, you can see that's when I started to drop all these hints between ushijima and the mc (tendou saying he'll go bald if the two got together, ushijima catching mc from falling down the stairs at national, ushijima considering throwing the ball during the golden week chapter, ushijima completely killing it with the dating sim chapter, etc.). I had the intention for quite a while, but I also really wanted to make sure every member of the team got their own "special" moment :)

Just read the update and I’ll go more in depth in my ao3 comment after my second read but OHMYGOD IM SO IN LOVE the team taking her out to eat after her acceptance to uni was so sweet I love them so much. Tendo knowing when to call her with his guess magic or whatever was cute. Goshiki was a cutie as usual but his little speech was just adorable.

Now my main event. The loml. My absolute sweetest pookie. My ushiwaka. I’m so happy they got their little moment. The way they could communicate with their double meanings was so sweet.

I’m so excited for the last chapter but it’s gonna be so bittersweet. I can’t believe it’s almost over and that I’ve been here since practically the beginning

HELLO!!! I'm so happy I was following you to see that you updated Shiratorizawa Antics. It's genuinely been a while since I've been in the Haikyuu fandom and you were one of the folks I was actively checking up on for AO3 fanfic updates! I'm so happy that I got to read it and it was so wonderful, crushed my heart a little (in a good way).

Just for my *personal* knowledge and you can outright deny to answer this, but are you thinking about doing a romantic endgame or is it all platonic? I'm happy with either, it's just something I've always been curious about.

Either way, I'm so happy I was able to come back and read this series. I'm looking forward to reading it and seeing how our lovely heroes end! <3

Jk but I honestly think Ushijima’s endgame. As much as Goshiki’ a crush on mc is really cute, it feels more like a puppy love that you get with an older unattainable person. While with Ushijima it feels more authentic with the conversations they had and the support they give each other. A bonus is Ushijima winning “mc’s” route in the dating simulator :)
