david bowie said that his music is very chaotic and experimental and all over the place and eccletic bc the human brain can think a huge number of images per second and it's all about chaos and he wanted to translate this amazing capacity for chaos that our brain has into music
- so he basically gave us music for bi adhd people

BEST DOCUMENTARIES OF 2022
Documentary as a genre can encompass any medium: feature film, TV mini-series, or even podcasts. Here are my picks for the best Docs of the year:
Honorable Mentions:
Meet Me in the Bathroom  Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern
Nothing Compares  Kathryn Ferguson
Trainwreck: Woodstock ’99  Jamie Crawford
George Carlin’s American Dream  Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio
The Beatles and India  Ajoy Bose and Peter Compton
Freedom Uncut  David Austin and George Michael
Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, a Journey, A Song  Daniel Geller and Dayna Goldfine
Sidney  Reginald Hudlin
10. Back to the Drive-In  April Wright
9. Like a Rolling Stone: The Life & Times of Ben Fong-Torres  Suzanne Joe Kai
8. Is That Black Enough for You?!?  Elvis Mitchell
7. Claydream  Marq Evans
6. If These Walls Could Sing  Mary McCartney
5. Stutz  Jonah Hill
Tumblr media
Jonah Hill sits down with his therapist for a doc about the therapist and his approach, that is insightful and thought-provoking.
4. The Pez Outlaw  Amy Bandlien Storkel and Bryan Storkel
Tumblr media
This profile of a man who smuggled rare Pez dispensers into America in the 90s and made millions is so crazy and outlandish you need to see it to believe it!
3. Moonage Daydream  Brett Morgen
Tumblr media
Morgen’s doc about David Bowie was made with the Bowie Estate and had some rare footage of the rock legend, but it was really the sci-fi approach to the subject that made this electric!
2. Good Night Oppy  Ryan White
Tumblr media
The inspirational story of Opportunity, the Mars rover that was expected to live 90 days and explored Mars for 15 years, was the big screen Event Movie of documentaries in 2022!
1. Last Flight Home  Ondi Timoner
Tumblr media
Ondi turned the camera onto her father Eli Timoner towards the end of his life with a cinema vérité account of the family confronting death. This went beyond a movie or a documentary and was truly an emotional life experience that was captured on film by one of the people experiencing it. Nothing but respect and admiration for Ondi and her brave filmmaking at such a time.

David Bowie died on this date, January 10th, in 2016, two days after his 69th birthday and two days after he released his final album, Blackstar (which Bowie recorded as a goodbye, knowing he was dying of cancer). His death hit me hard, as it did for legions of his fans. I bought Blackstar on vinyl on its release date, and I was stunned when Bowie passed away two days later.
Tumblr media
I have a wonderful memory of seeing the Bowie movie Moonage Daydream in 2022 at the Plaza Theatre in Atlanta, with the audience singing along and people dancing in the aisles. It was very much like a blessing, a religious experience.
Tumblr media
Guy the Cat with Bowie's Bookshelf: The Hundred Books that Changed David Bowie's Life, by John O'Connell. Bowie was a voracious reader.

Rest In Peace, David Bowie.

Merry Christmas!!!
I was just wondering— how much do you know about the bootleg record His Master’s Voice - Bowie and the Spiders From Mars’ Last Stand? I can’t find many details about it online and you seem like you’d be wise on the subject
I’m flattered you thought to ask me, but I really don’t know much at all - but I have done some research upon seeing this ask. Not sure exactly what you want to know, but hopefully these crumbs of research give you some info that you aren’t already aware of?
It's a press of the famed 1973 concert where Jeff Beck plays for some songs - the performance in question is last Ziggy Stardust concert, at the Hammersmith Odeon. This is the same concert at which the 1979 documentary was filmed. The bootleg features some little throw-ins at the concert, including a cover of Love Me Do.
The key here, the bootleg-necessitating key here, is Jeff Beck. I believe he was unhappy with his performance on this night, which was being filmed for the doc. Hence, he requested that the footage of him would be removed from the final cut of the film. The footage in question actually wasn't officially available until 2022's Moonage Daydream documentary.
This would not stop people recording the audio themselves at the concert. Thus, TAKLR's Bowie And The Spiders From Mars' Last Stand - His Masters Voice became popular in bootleg circles.
And hence, the second key is TAKRL, or The Amazing Kornyfone Record Label. TAKRL was one of the first bootleg record labels in America. Apparently, they were active from 1973 to around the late 70s. This page has a tracklist for the album, as well as a few quotes from TAKRL. And some moderately goofy comments. You might also be able to find info on other Bowie bootlegs on this site.
For those who'd like to listen, there's an upload of the vinyl to Youtube. Notably, the uploader redacts an intro placed on the B-side before Time, which is apparently something called "Orgies A Tool For Witchcraft" by a Louise Huebner. Apparently she was the only "officially appointed Official Witch in the whole world". You can't find much about her, but I did find an upload of a 1969 album - Louise Huebner's Seduction Through Witchcraft - that seems to include the intro in question. I haven't listened to it at all so I really don't know what it's about. Anyways. Odd little tidbit that the bootlegger chose to add.
Can't figure out the significance of the His Master's Voice reference. Doesn't look to be associated with the HMV label as far as I can tell, and I don't know if TAKRL had any other bootlegs with the reference. The most common album cover I can find is this, but this second one with the iconic His Master's Voice image was hanging around on an online vinyl shop. I'm mostly including it because I just think it's a bit funny

TLDR: 1974 bootleg recording of the final Ziggy Stardust performance (3 July 1973). Featured Jeff Beck.
youtube
Personally, I think the Rock'n'Roll Suicide performance is a highlight.
I hope this helped in some way, and didn't just regurgitate stuff you knew already. Thank you for asking! I love researching these sorts of things. Let me know if you have any specific questions and I will do my very best to answer. Merry Christmas to you as well!
If anyone else has any info, feel encouraged to share.

i recently watched moonage daydream (dir. by brett morgen, 2022), it’s a documentary on david bowie. normally i’m not the type of person to watch documentaries for fun unless i particularly have to, but if i ever have to make a documentary (which i probably will cause i want to go to film school) i would want to look and feel like moonage daydream. it was just so outstanding to look at and hear. it was all so much about sounds and visuals that it felt like watching a fever dream being played in film. it truly captured what i like to think was the essence of who david bowie was.
