Scientists have for the first time discovered a cave on the Moon.

At least 100m deep, it could be an ideal place for humans to build a permanent base, they say.

It is just one in probably hundreds of caves hidden in an “underground, undiscovered world”, according to the researchers.

Countries are racing to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon, but they will need to protect astronauts from radiation, extreme temperatures, and space weather.

Helen Sharman, the first British astronaut to travel to space, told BBC News that the newly-discovered cave looked like a good place for a base, and suggested humans could potentially be living in lunar pits in 20-30 years.

But, she said, this cave is so deep that astronauts might need to abseil in and use “jet packs or a lift” to get out.

Lorenzo Bruzzone and Leonardo Carrer at the University of Trento in Italy found the cave by using radar to penetrate the opening of a pit on a rocky plain called the Mare Tranquillitatis.

It is visible to the naked eye from Earth, and is also where Apollo 11 landed in 1969.

Random Thought of the Day

Metal detecting on the beach of the Sea of Tranquility!

Since water was discovered on the moon many scientists are hoping to make a lunar base (lack of water was a main limiting factor apparently). A lot of things are theoretically easier in low gravity including building more spacecraft and achieving escape velocity to travel further out into space. Now, to get metal for that everyone is talking about mining but I had a thought:

The Moon gets hit with a lot more meteors/meteorites than Earth. Meteorites that make it through Earth’s atmosphere are classified as “Iron”, “Stony” and “Stony-iron”. While most meteorites are apparently “Stony”, that’s still a lot of potential metal bearing meteorites sitting on or near the surface (if at the bottom of the craters). So potential is there.

I love the image of an astronaut with a Hawaiian shirt and kaki shorts over their spacesuit waving around a metal detector as they stroll about the Moon and that’s just, their job. X’D

In 1999, Moonbase Alpha, nestled in the Lunar crater Plato, is a scientific research colony and watchdog over silos of atomic waste from Earth stored on the Moon's far side. On September 13, 1999, magnetic energy builds to cause an explosive chain-reaction of the waste, blasting the Moon out of Earth's orbit and off the plane of the ecliptic, out of the Solar System. The inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha are unable to return to Earth and must survive on their wandering Moon as it is displaced further into unknown space by freak space warps. Along the way, they are joined by an alien woman with the ability to change herself into any living creature at will.
