Tumblr media Tumblr media
Roarkit loudly complains as Flitchest pulls them over to quickly groom their pelt. They manage to wriggle away and scurry off to the front of the crowd for their ceremony, where they are renamed to Roarpaw and apprenticed to Lakehusk
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beampaw purrs so hard that they're shaking as they touch noses with Pikepounce

Tumblr media
A harsh sparring session left Squirrelpaw bruised. They worry they will do badly in a real fight against FlightClan
Tumblr media
Health
Flitchest tells Lakehusk that they might have to accept that their leg that was so badly mangled will always now be weaker. At least they still have it, but that's cold consolation to Lakehusk, who feels like they were so close to healing perfectly Flitchest notices Avalanchebeetle limping across camp and gives them exercises to help strengthen their weak leg and reduce pain Shalenibble's grief lessened Frogcry's claw-wound healed but scarred Hazyseed's cat bite healed Oddflight has a running nose Macavity's heat exhaustion abated Snapmuzzle is no longer suffering from heat stroke Squirrelpaw no longer has greencough Frannie recovered from heat stroke

Kokushibo headcanon of dating him? In general Nfsw and sfw? Or maybe just the headcanons with Muzan, Akaza, douma, Kokushibo
Kokushibo Dating Headcannons
Wordcount: 354 words
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kokushibo is a little on the quiet side, but you don't have to be quiet to date him. You can be loud or relaxed, it doesn't matter to him.
Kokushibo doesn't care about looks at all; he's into personality. He likes his partner's thought process and their values (whether they're different to his or not, he still finds it fascinating).
Kokushibo wants to show you affection, he's just clueless on how to. His hugs and kisses (even hand-holding) is a little awkward so he lets you take the lead).
Kokushibo is surprisingly a jealous lover. He doesn't quite care about low-leveled demons or average humans, but any Demon Slayers or powerful demons you're friends with gets him jealous. He's afraid you'll leave him for someone stronger than him or someone who can better understand affectionate gestures. He might eat the demon(s) who got him jealous and absorb their strength.
Kokushibo likes it when you're both existing in each other's space doing your own separate things. The tranquility of the moment is unlike any other and it's one of his favorite memories to look back on in his hundreds of years of life.
Kokushibo's love languages are spending time and buying gifts for you. He likes getting you hair ornaments and hand-held fans, sometimes a kimono if one catches his eye.
Kokushibo might entertain the idea of training you to defend yourself (whether you're a human or demon, it doesn't matter). He decides that he won't and he'll just be around you all the time to protect you.
Kokushibo is the definition of scary dog privileges. His silence and appearance is intimidating to everyone, but he's very gentle and thoughtful towards you.
Kokushibo remembers everything you say. Whether it's talking about your favorite food or what someone said, he'll remember it (he even remembers when you told him you tripped a few months ago).
Kokushibo might give you a little light show with his Moon Breathing if you ask (beg) him enough.

Thank you for requesting! I do apologize for how long it took, I was waiting until I temporarily closed my inbox to see if there would be any repeating requests. I've also been busy in my life so it's been hard to find time to write, but I should be able to start writing more frequently in a few weeks.

"they have returned!" you heard the tsahìk, mo'at, announce from outside of your tent, and you made your way out immediately. neytiri was your closest friend, and you had waited anxiously for ten moons for her to return.
"NEYTIRI!" you called out, running to engulf her into a tight embrace, until you saw the look on her face. she looked numb, empty, almost as if she had lost a loved one. ironic isn't it?
you stopped running right in front of her, too scared to hug her. something had happened, you knew it, every single one of them had the same look on their faces, all except jake. because he wasn't there.
"where is jake?" you asked, eyeing the five of them. the silence they gave you as a response, and the way the muddy floor seemed to be the most interesting thing to them, gave you the only answer you needed. he is with eywa now.
"no." you shook your head in denial, "n- no." your voice cracked as tears began brimming in your eyes. as much as you hated the fact that a uniltìranyu had sneaked his way into your clan by calling himself a warrior, which he told you was a lie further along the line, he had grown to be, besides neytiri, your closest friend.
"i am sorry." you apologised for yourself, before taking your shaking self back to your tent. you hated crying in front of people, you hated showing that much vulnerability to someone you barley knew. of course you knew neytiri, and her children. you just didn't want to cry in front of the children, especially given their situation.
as soon as you entered, and closed the door to your tent, you broke down. knees buckling underneath you, sending you to the ground, as you wept, and wailed loudly, now realising that you would no longer see the man you once called a friend. you were too out of current reality to care about the other na'vi hearing you. they were probably feeling similar emotions to you, they had also lost a loved olo'hapxìtu, their former olo'eyktan.
TRANSLATIONS
uniltìranyu = dreamwalker
olo'hapxìtu = clan member
olo'eyktan = clan leader

Gongoozler lore drop
I just realized something
In my hc
▪︎ gongoozler and mutated gongoozler are the same guy
In iron lung there's a lore about blood ocean
iirc in iron lung the blood ocean was transported from earth and there was a portal to the blood lake(scp-354) that's where the gongoozler came from, after living in the ocean for a while it got mutated/evolved to be able to survive
The blood lake(scp-354)👇
Tumblr media
▪︎ I gave friends to my gongoozler and mutated gongoozler
while the original gongoozler loves yancy's music, the mutated one adopted convict
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do you see where I'm going?
In many people's hc they said yancy and convict could be the same guy
I REALIZED AFTER THE BFFS GOT SEPARATED ON PLANET EARTH THEY'VE FOUND EACH OTHERS AGAIN ON THE BLOOD MOON IM GONNA CRY AAAAAAAA

Thirteen of you are actual sickos who voted smash for Vince McMahon. I NEED to know what is going on inside of your heads. Unless, idk, you thought "smash" implied violence.
Great showing from the Best Friends this week. OC, Danhausen, Trent, and Chuck (and Trent and Chuck together!) join their friend Kris Stat as certified smashes. Though, somehow a threesome with Best Friends the tag team rated higher (66.7%) than Chuck or Trent separately (66.2% and 61.3%, respectively).
You guys definitely prefer House of Black Julia Hart over Varsity Blonds Julia, and who could blame you! She is a powerful combination of scary and beautiful.
I was out at a bar with my husband when the request for Andy Kaufman came in, and I said to him, "Someone just submitted Andy Kaufman??? He didn't wrestle." And my husband replied, "Yeah he did. He called himself the intergender world champion and offered $1000 and his hand in marriage to any woman who could defeat him." So that was a neat history lesson and definitely shed some light on the line "Andy Kaufman in a wrestling match" in the REM song "Man on the Moon," which I'd previously assumed was some kind of weird Michael Stipe metaphor.
I have seen some complaints about the images I've used for some of these wrestlers, and I don't disagree! Anyone who requests a wrestler is encouraged to add a photo to their ask! And since you can't include photos in anonymous asks, if you don't want your username associated with the poll, mention that in your ask and I'll create a separate post for the poll instead of replying to your ask. I did also find a source for photos that isn't just a Google image search, so image thirstiness will improve soon.
And now for some of my favorite tags and comments
@howlinghunters on Best Friends: #These two have always given me#'Someone will die.' 'OF FUN!' vibes
@are-we-really-doing-this on Danhausen: #I’d suck the tattoos off his body
@jennegatron on Chuck Taylor: #I would let chuck awful waffle me (please tell me wtf this means it sounds terrifying)
@jennegatron again on Trent Beretta: #his brain is so smooth#but he's simply so hot
@rosabellebelieve on Orange Cassidy: #make him into pulp
@wrassle-castle on Vince McMahon: #if i fuck him can i also kill him?#cause i'd take that L#for the greater good
@tahiri-veyla on Kane: #the only appropriate smash for this is with a semi
@dm-me-your-weltanschauung on Vince McMahon:

Fic Stats Meme
Rules: Give us the links to your fics with the most hits, second most kudos, third most comments, fourth most bookmarks, fifth most words, and your fic with the least amount of words.
Both @elwenyere and @goddammitjim had open tags and this sounded fun! Let's see what the stats say:
Most hits
Slow Waters - Star Wars, 37k, Codywan, 7123 hits
The events of seven days in the mid-autumn of 2025, between the arrival of the Fett brothers -- the three-man Ranger team nicknamed "The Clones" by the general public -- to the Tokyo Shatterdome, and the last mission made against the Kaiju invasion.
Second most kudos
Inexpressibly to Untangle - Star Wars, 6k, Codywan, 533 kudos
"He’d always wondered why they’d called it that, when they can see real stars all the time, and the rearrangement of blood pressure just greys out his vision. It’s nothing like crisp white sparks of light on a vast black field, or a little speck of red on a purple sunset, or three yellow suns burning in tandem on the horizon." A post-Order 66 canon AU in which Obi-Wan and Cody crash-land on Endor.
Third most comments
Portrait of Monsieur X - Captive Prince, 37k, Damen/Laurent, 47 comment threads
"Without moving, Laurent spoke. “I wonder how long it takes for a portrait to become something different than its subject,” he said quietly. Damen wondered if this was a question he was truly meant to answer." It's the 1890s and Damen is hired to paint Laurent's portrait. A fic with guilt, ruin, and love.
Fourth most bookmarks
Wolfssegen - Star Wars, 7k, Codywan, 42 bookmarks
"Three years ago, just after Cody took on the old house on the outskirts of a small town, there had been a full moon, and Cody had woken the next morning to find the mangled remains of an iron wolf trap strewn across his back steps. The next full moon, he'd dragged a chair outside and waited up all night, and watched the patient glow of Obi-Wan's eyes from just beyond the tree-line." A vaguely historical, vaguely German story about wolves and magic.
Fifth most words
What Year Was Our House Built? - Star Wars, Codywan, 23,713 words
Cody and Obi-Wan live a peaceful, domestic life in a beautiful house, but all is not what it seems. When they start to have dreams of a different world, and objects start to appear in their home, and something in the basement just doesn't feel right-- that's when someone has to ask: What Year Was Our House Built?
Least words (not counting artworks)
Corn? - Venom (Marvel), Chickens, 354 words
A brief glimpse into the navigations of chickens Sonny and Cher in Eddie and Venom's life.
Tags: Open for anyone who sees this!! what a fun little glimpse into what I usually try not to look at. Numbers are not usually very large but I'm so proud of everything on this list. Yes, even the chicken one.

Okay so I'm writing a thing about Forgiveness in Wings of Fire and it's occurring to me now that...The Strawberry scene has some serious tonal issues.
Like, I've been thinking of the Strawberry scene as a foreboding bad mess of writing choices so much that I forgot how....actually bad it is.
Even ignoring the moral issues and what not it poses it's just...badly written, in the middle of Darkstalker literally choking and shrinking Kinkajou is gloating. The writing of Darkstalker is all over the place framing him as a simple power hunger manipulative monster again and then they proceed to frame him like a scared child who wanted to do there best.
(Page 353, Darkness of Dragons)
"But my powers!" he cried. His voice was higher, less cavernous and booming now, as his lungs shrank. "All my magic...can't I keep any of it? The mind reading? Wait-" ---------------------------------------- "Didn't I help you?" Darkstalker said in a lost, small voice, looking up at Moon. "Didn't I save dragons, too? I'm not evil...I'm not..."
And like I get there trying to write a desperate villain plea but knowing what we know about Darkstalker it just rings hollow. This isn't Darkstalker grasping for straws, this is Darkstalker, the child, wondering what he did wrong. And as someone who hates Darkstalker the 'not evil' line is genuinely heart breaking.
How are the character's treating this actually horrific scene....welllllllllll
(Page 352, Darkness of Dragons)
"What?" Darkstaker said, choking. "But how I didn't see-" "I know," Kinkajou said proudly. "Never saw me coming! Taking down by a ball of fluff! Who's insignificant NOW frogface!" (She says as she knowingly rewrites a person's mind) ----------------------------------------
(Page 353, Darkness of Dragons)
"I really thought he was going to choose this for himself," Moon said, tipping her head at the shrinking dragon. "Oh, I knew he wouldn't," Kinkajou said. "But I couldn't tell you my awesome plan, obviously"
(Page 354, Darkness of Dragons)
"What in the world?" Moon asked. "Oh, yeah I made him half Rainwing," Kinkajou said, fighting back a giggle. "I thought that would look good for him. And it turned out so pretty!"
...Ok most of these are Kinkajou and I will be unsurprised if this scene made people hate Kinkajou (Really wish Kinkajou was not a vessel of which the worst Wings of Fire writing decisions, literally right after this is the Winter Epilogue and you know how I feel about that!)
But there's a total whiplash, what's going on is horrifying, serious, even without the ethical conundrums, it's a big bad getting defeated, one that killed hundreds of people...and this is how there treating it.
It's...just not that great really. Don't really have much to add I just forgot how bad the Strawberry scene is.

2d4 Random Calendars: Lunar and Zodiac
This is part two of a series on calendars! See this master post for more calendar content: https://www.tumblr.com/randomtable/713543620842700800/random-calendar-series-masterpost?source=share
2. A lunisolar calendar, based on the cycle of a single moon but reconciled with the cycle of the seasons. The months are 8d6 days long. The year is usually 5d4 months long, but every 2d4 years there is a leap month added to keep the lunar calendar relatively aligned with the seasons of the solar year.
3. An uneven zodiac calendar. There are 5d4 chosen constellations and the year is divided unevenly into that many parts based on when each one is nearest the sun in the sky. Roll 8d6 for each month to determine its length.
4. A lunar calendar, based on the cycle of a single moon. The lunar cycle lasts 8d6 and a fraction days (for example, 29 1/2 days), so the months alternate between rounding up and rounding down (for example, some months are 29 days and some are 30). The year is 5d4 months long. (See Bonus: Solar Years in Lunar Calendars below to create the seasons which don’t quite match up with this zodiac calendar)
5. A lunar calendar, based on the cycle of a single moon. The lunar cycle lasts 8d6 days, and the year is 5d4 months long. (See Bonus: Solar Years in Lunar Calendars below to create the seasons which don’t quite match up with this zodiac calendar)
6. A zodiac calendar. There are 5d4 chosen constellations, and the year is divided evenly into that many parts based on when each one is nearest the sun in the sky. These zodiac months last 8d6 days.
7. A lunar calendar, with two moons in a resonant orbit. For every two cycles of one moon, the other makes three, and so months are based on the time between their alignments. These months last 10d6 days; you can divide this number by 2 and 3 to get the cycles of each individual moon. A year is 4d4 months long. (See Bonus: Solar Years in Lunar Calendars below to create the seasons which don’t quite match up with this lunar calendar.)
8. A perfectly aligned lunisolar calendar. The months are 8d6 days long, and the year is 5d4 months long. This exactly lines up with the number of days in a solar year.
Start of the Lunar Month:
for lunar and lunisolar calendars, the months begin on (1d4): 1. The day of the first appearance of the crescent moon. 2. The day of the new moon. 3. The day of the full moon. 4. The day after the full moon.
Bonus: Solar Years in Lunar Calendars
For results 4, 5 and 7, the number of months in your year is the closest approximation to how long it takes your planet to orbit its sun (which is to say, how long it takes for a full cycle of four seasons to occur.) Your solar year is actually 4d4 days longer or shorter than your lunar year. [note: if you manage to roll a number higher than the length of your months here, use the difference between the two instead]. The number of days in your solar year divided by four tells you how long each season is.
Because the solar year doesn’t line up exactly with the years of your lunar calendar, the months will cycle through all the seasons over the course of several years. You can figure out how long this lunar-solar cycle is: Divide the number of days in your longer year by the difference between the longer and shorter year. (On Earth, the solar year is 365 days and the lunar year is 354 days. 365-354=11, and 365/11=33.18, so it takes 33 years for the months to re-align with the seasons.) This cycle may have some significance to your society!

Rare 'blue supermoon' — the biggest and brightest full moon of the year — rises Aug. 30 | Live Science
The biggest and brightest full moon of 2023 will rise on Aug. 30, and its strange name deserves an explanation. Called a "blue supermoon," it is the result of three lunar phenomena happening at once.
The "blue" supermoon's name has nothing to do with the moon's color. In fact, it will actually be orange. The blue supermoon gets the first part of its name for a different reason: It's the second full moon in August.
There are two types of blue moon. The August blue supermoon falls into the first category: two full moons occurring in the same month. That's occasionally inevitable; a new full moon rises every  29.5 days. Given that the Sturgeon Moon occurred on Aug. 1, 2023, the Aug. 30 full moon will be a blue moon. Blue moons of this type, called "calendar blue moons," occur roughly every two or three years, with the next one occurring on May 31, 2026, according to timeanddate.
The second type of blue moon, called a "seasonal blue moon," describes the third full moon of four during one astronomical season. This occurs when a calendar year has 13 full moons instead of the typical 12. (A lunar year — 12 orbits of Earth by the moon — takes 354 days, while Earth's solar year is 365 days.) The next seasonal blue moon, which also happens every two or three years, will occur on Aug. 19, 2024, according to timeanddate.
So, where does the second part of the name come from? A supermoon occurs when the full moon is close to its nearest point to Earth in its orbit. The moon's orbit of Earth is elliptical, so every month, it reaches a closest point (perigee) and farthest point (apogee). Moons that come within 90% of perigee in a given month qualify as supermoons, according to Fred Espenak, an astronomer and former eclipse calculator for NASA.
August's second full moon is the third and closest of four supermoons in 2023. At 222,043 miles (357,344 kilometers) from Earth, it will be the biggest and brightest supermoon of 2023, though it will be only 20 miles (33 kilometers) closer than Aug. 1's full moon, which was 222,023 miles (357,311 km) away.
The next full moon will be the Harvest Moon, on Sept. 29. In addition to being one of the best-known full moons of the year, it's the last supermoon in 2023.
Find out the exact time of moonrise for your location, and prepare for the spectacular sight of the blue supermoon on the eastern horizon next week.  ...

10 Exciting Facts About Easter Sunday
By: Shash Wighton
Updated: 3 December 2022
Tumblr media
For those who grew up without much religion in their lives, Easter Sunday was more about chocolate Easter eggs and little more than that.
This day means much more to Christians, though, with some preferring to call it “Resurrection Sunday.”
This is because the New Testament describes Easter Sunday as the day that Jesus Christ rose from the dead, three days after he had been crucified by the Romans all the way back in 30 AD.
Tumblr media
Easter has got to be one of the most confusing celebrations held throughout the year due to this fact, but we’re here to clear this up for you.
First, let’s go into why this happens in the first place.
As we now all know, Easter Sunday is connected to the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
This gets a little complicated, as this event was only recorded in the Jewish calendar that happened just after the Jewish festival of Passover.
The Jewish calendar doesn’t sync up with the Gregorian calendar, which most of the world relies upon, as it’s based on lunar cycles rather than the movements of the sun.
While a solar year contains 365.24 days, a lunar year only contains about 354.
The date of Passover also changes, as it takes place on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the 20th of March, which also ultimately affects the date Easter Sunday lands on.
Obviously, it is still possible to calculate what date Easter Sunday will fall on, but it involves a bit of maths and the consultation of charts, so we won’t bore you with that and instead suggest you simply Google it!
Tumblr media
Not just in English, either, as the Dutch and German for Easter are Ooster and Ostern, respectively.
In Old English, the celebration was usually recorded as Ēastrun, Ēastre, Ēastru, or Ēostre.
The origin of Easter’s name doesn’t stop there, though.
In 725, Saint Bede, a Benedictine monk in the old English kingdom of Northumbria, wrote that the name is connected to the pagan goddess Ēostre.
Feasts were celebrated in honor of Ēostre in Ēosturmōnaþ (Month of Ēostre), which is the equivalent to April today.
At some point, the Pagan goddess’ name was appropriated by Christians for the name of Easter Sunday.
Tumblr media
Like Easter Sunday, Good Friday also has a couple of other names, including Great Friday, Holy Friday, and even Great and Holy Friday.
Just like Easter Sunday, Good Friday changes date every year due to its connection to Jesus Christ.
Good Friday commemorates the day when Christ was crucified and killed by the Romans.
As Christ’s crucifixion happened a set amount of time before he was resurrected, the date is fixed according to Easter Sunday.
Fun Fact: Good Friday is not named such because the day was a happy day, but because “good” used to be a synonym of “pious” and “holy.”
Tumblr media
Many Christians around the world observe the tradition of Lent.
During this period, diligent Christians must give up a Lenten sacrifice (some form of pleasure or luxury) for forty days.
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and runs until Easter Sunday.
Traditionally, people in the English-speaking world would use up their eggs, dairy, and other richer foods the day before they began a fast for Lent on Ash Wednesday.
Because of this, Shrove Tuesday began to be known as Pancake Day in the UK.
The tradition crossed the channel into France, where it became known as Mardi Gras (which translates to “Fat Tuesday”).
Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, or however you want to call it is the day that slowly evolved into a day where celebrants feast on finer foods, especially on pancakes.
Tumblr media
The eating of lamb on this day goes back further than Christ himself, as it is actually connected to the Jewish festival of Passover.
Passover celebrates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, and at the end of it, a “Passover lamb” is slaughtered and eaten.
The tradition of eating lamb at the end of Passover was likely continued by those who eventually converted to Christianity, and the tradition of eating lamb on Easter Sunday began.
It’s been justified by Christians as the lamb is said to represent Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, but these days many non-religious British families also enjoy a lamb roast on Easter Sunday.
Tumblr media
The Eastern Orthodox Church, which includes the Russian and Greek Orthodox Churches, celebrates many similar holidays to other Christians, including Easter Sunday.
For them, it lies on a different date, as events in the Orthodox Church are calculated according to the Julian Calendar, which much of the world used before changing to the current Gregorian calendar in the 16th Century.
So the date is different because of the use of two different calendar systems, but that’s not all.
When the Eastern Orthodox Church was formed, they decided to use a different formula for calculating what day Easter Sunday fell on.
Because of this, there’s actually no set number of days between Easter and Orthodox Easter, with the two occasionally falling on the same day!
Tumblr media
These days, it’s not a good Easter Sunday without more chocolate eggs than you should probably eat. However, that hasn’t always been the case and still isn’t in some Christian countries.
Before Easter Sunday was celebrated with chocolate Easter Eggs, people used actual eggs dyed with natural plant dyes and decorated with intricate designs.
This tradition is said to go back to some of the earliest days of Christianity, with the eggs originally dyed red to represent the blood that Christ shed when he was crucified.
Followers of the Greek Orthodox Church still paint their Easter eggs red.
The painting of Easter Eggs is still carried out in most countries with ties to the various Orthodox Christian churches, with chocolate Easter eggs considered a more “Western” notion.
Tumblr media
In 1772, Easter Sunday fell on April 5.
It also happened to be the day when Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen first set foot on the island, which came to be known in the English-speaking world as Easter Island.
It was already called Rapa Nui by the island’s local inhabitants, but Roggeveen decided to name it after Easter Sunday anyway.
Well, sort of.
He actually named it Paasch-Eyland, which, in 18th-century Dutch, translated to “Easter Island" in English.
Tumblr media
As we now know, the date of Easter Sunday is calculated according to a formula that, among other things, takes both the lunar and solar calendars into account.
Because of this, Easter Sunday can be anywhere between March 22 and April 25.
One would easily be forgiven for thinking that any given dates that Easter Sunday land on do not actually repeat themselves in a cycle, as it seems to be different every year.
That’s not exactly true, though.
The specific cycle that it goes through (e.g., April 1 in 2018, April 21 in 2019, April 12 in 2020, and so on) has so many factors affecting it that it takes a mind-bending 5.7 million years to repeat itself.

Katie came over after work, we scarfed down some pizza (both of us were too excited to eat much), and we got our backpacks together for the expedition. We took everyone’s suggestions, and also added a large textbook, 2 disposable cameras (spoiler alert: we got 1-hour photo development, and not a single photo came out as anything but a dark smudge) and several skeins of bright orange yarn (my idea).
The trip down didn’t seem to take as long as before, though that probably had something to do with not worrying that something was going to jump out at us behind every curve.
When we got down to the door, we propped it open with the textbook. It didn’t seem too likely to close on its own, but better safe than sorry. Then we tied one end of the orange yarn to the nearest tree, and started down the path.
It was mostly quiet--no birdsong or anything--except that sometimes a gentle breeze would blow and the silver trees would kind of ring. Eventually we managed to spot the full moon, shining brilliantly off of some of the trees. The whole place was just stunningly beautiful. There were lampposts all along the path (kudos to whomever said we’d end up in Narnia lol), so we didn’t need our flashlights, but we couldn’t see very far into the woods. Every once in awhile the branches would jangle like something was moving through them: the first time it happened, Katie and jumped and grabbed each other and stared around in terror, but when nothing happened, we eventually decided it had either been a gust of wind or some kind of small animal (do they HAVE squirrels in metal forests?!), and after awhile we stopped doing more than jumping out of our skin every time it happened.
It wasn’t long before we had finished up a skein of yarn--a full 354 yards, according to the label!--and had to tie on a second one. While I was fiddling with the yarn, Katie said she saw something odd up ahead. When we got there, we found that the entire forest is not silver.
The silver trees slowly but surely gave way to gold trees. I really got scared at this point, because I remembered what @esmeiolanthe said about gold and diamond trees. I told Katie, and it kind of freaked her out too, though I think in general she’s much braver than I am. But we kept walking, and nothing changed: the trees ringing in the soft breeze, the moon shining above and the lampposts on either side, and an occasional rustle (more like a crash) in the woods.
The gold trees looked like maples (leaves shaped like the one on the Canadian flag). We tied another skein of yarn on, and another one, and eventually Katie tugged on my arm and pointed ahead. This time, I could see what she did: @esmeiolanthe was right. There were diamond trees.
These were absolutely stunning, and I would have been speechless at the sight if I hadn’t already been nearly speechless with fear. They were shaped like weeping willows, with long silvery streamers of narrow diamond leaflets glittering in the light of the lampposts and the moon. There was a lot more noise here--the willow branches moved a lot more than the oak or maples--and still those occasional crashes.
Finally, as we were getting to the very end of the fifth skein (I only took 7), the path slowly opened out, and we found ourselves on a little pebbled beach around an enormous lake.
The moon was shining brightly on the water. As far as we could see in the distance there were metal trees of various colors leading down to the beach, which was studded with the occasional lamppost (though they weren’t nearly as necessary here, since the moon was so bright out in the open.
On the far side of the lake we could see what looked like a beautiful palace, all lit up, and we could hear faint music echoing over the water.
And there wasn’t a ferryman there--but there was a boat. Just one rowboat with two oars and a lantern at one end.
We did NOT take the oars. In fact, I convinced Katie that we should go back: that we had explored enough for one night. Eventually she agreed, and we tied the end of the yarn to another tree and headed back up the path.
I was getting hungry by the time we reached the stairs--which, from this end looked set into an ivy-covered stone wall, the ends of which I couldn’t see--and was glad we had brought water and snacks for the hike back up the stairs.
We had gone down at about 7 pm, and when we got back it was only 8, though I would have sworn we spent much more than an hour down there. Katie and I ate the rest of the pizza and discussed what to do next.
Katie wanted to get in the boat and paddle across to the palace, to see what the music was all about. I remembered the thing about the ferryman, so I didn’t want to have anything to do with the boat: I wanted to walk along the beach and see if there was anything else to be seen on this side of the lake. After all, if we walk far enough, and the palace really is on the other side of the lake, we should come to it eventually, right? (Though it’s probably a few miles the whole way around--quite a hike.)
I’m really relying on you folks to give me some idea what you think we should do next: I think your advice might help Katie and me to make up our minds. Please comment or send an ask: what do you think we should do the next time we go down? Walk along the beach? Cross the lake in the boat? A secret third option? We know not to each anything we find down there, and not to steal the ferryman’s oars, but is there anything else we should be aware of??
