As the patrol walks back to camp, they playfully headbutt each other, thankfully not as hard as the two buck goats were

Geronimo

Geronimo (Goyahkla, l. c. 1829-1909) was a medicine man and war chief of the Bedonkohe tribe of the Chiricahua Apache nation, best known for his resistance against the encroachment of Mexican and Euro-American settlers and armed forces into Apache territory and as one of the last Native American leaders to surrender to the United States government.

During the Apache Wars (1849-1886), he allied with other leaders such as Cochise (l. c. 1805-1874) and Victorio (l. c. 1825-1880) in attacks on US forces after Apache lands became part of US territories following the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). Between c. 1850 and 1886, Geronimo led raids against villages, outposts, and cattle trains in northern Mexico and southwest US territories, often striking with relatively small bands of warriors against superior numbers and slipping away into the mountains and then back to his homelands in the region of modern-day Arizona and New Mexico.

He surrendered to US authorities three times, but when the terms of his surrender were not honored, he escaped the reservation and returned to launching raids on settlements. He was finally talked into surrendering for good by First Lieutenant Charles B. Gatewood (l. 1853-1896), under the command of General Nelson A. Miles (l. 1839-1925), in 1886. None of the terms stipulated by Miles were honored, but by that time, Geronimo felt he was too old and too tired to continue running. Geronimo's surrender to Gatewood is told accurately, though with some poetic license, in the Hollywood movie Geronimo: An American Legend (1993).

Geronimo was imprisoned at Fort Pickens, Pensacola, Florida, before being moved to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Toward the end of his life, he became a sensation at the St. Louis World's Fair (1904) and President Theodore Roosevelt's Inaugural Parade (1905) as well as other events. Although one of the stipulations of his surrender was his return to his homelands in Arizona, he was held as a prisoner elsewhere for 23 years before dying in 1909 of pneumonia at Fort Sill.

Name & Youth

His Apache name was Goyahkla ("One Who Yawns"), and, according to some scholars, he acquired the name Geronimo during his campaigns against Mexican troops, who would appeal to Saint Jerome (San Jeronimo in Spanish) for assistance. This was possibly Saint Jerome Emiliani (l. 1486-1537), patron of orphans and abandoned children, not the better-known Saint Jerome of Stridon (l. c. 342-420), translator of the Bible into the Vulgate and patron of translators, scholars, and librarians.

Geronimo was born near Turkey Creek near the Gila River in the region now known as Arizona and New Mexico c. 1825. He was the fourth of eight children and had three brothers and four sisters. In his autobiography, Geronimo: The True Story of America's Most Ferocious Warrior (1906), dictated to S. M. Barrett, Geronimo described his youth:

When a child, my mother taught me the legends of our people; taught me of the sun and sky, the moon and stars, the clouds, and storms. She also taught me to kneel and pray to Usen for strength, health, wisdom, and protection. We never prayed against any person, but if we had aught against any individual, we ourselves took vengeance. We were taught that Usen does not care for the petty quarrels of men. My father had often told me of the brave deeds of our warriors, of the pleasures of the chase, and the glories of the warpath. With my brothers and sisters, I played about my father's home. Sometimes we played at hide-and-seek among the rocks and pines; sometimes we loitered in the shade of the cottonwood trees…When we were old enough to be of real service, we went to the field with our parents; not to play, but to toil.

After his father died of illness, his mother did not remarry, and Geronimo took her under his care. In 1846, when he was around 17 years old, he was admitted to the Council of Warriors, which meant he could now join in war parties and also marry. He married Alope of the Nedni-Chiricahua tribe, and they would later have three children. Geronimo set up a home for his family near his mother's teepee, and as he says, "we followed the traditions of our fathers and were happy. Three children came to us – children that played, loitered, and worked as I had done" (Barrett, 25). This happy time in Geronimo's life would not last long, however.

Prompt 21 - Mask

Sirius watched as Remus joked with Lily, their laughter filling the common room. They were squashed into one of the window seats, Remus’s long legs bent around Lily so he would fit. Lily didn’t seem to mind, leaning happily against them to give Remus as much room as she could. They had a book between them and kept flicking to different pages before passing it to the other to read and then peals of laughter sounded again. 

In a lull of their excitement, Remus looked over at Sirius and blushed when he caught the other boy watching him. Sirius let the mask his mother had forced him to create to protect himself from her and other painful things, slide onto his face as he hid his true emotions from his best friend. He gave him a small half smile that didn’t meet his cold, lifeless eyes before turning his attention to the book he hadn’t been reading in his lap. 

“Hey, Pads, you alright?” James asked, ruffling his hair as he plonked himself down on the sofa next to Sirius. Sirius’s hand went straight to his hair as he tried to undo the chaos James had caused. 

“Fine,” He grumbled. James reached over and gently grasped his chin, turning his face to look at it. 

“Oh, Sirius, take that off,” He ordered sadly. Sirius screwed his eyes shut and concentrated until the darkness slid away. “That’s better,” James crooned as Sirius’s grey eyes softened. Remus and Lily’s laughter rang out again and Sirius’s eyes snapped across the room. “Pads, you really need to stop mooning over Moony and just tell him already,” James said softly. Sirius yanked his chin free from James’s fingers and gathered his things together. 

“I can’t risk our friendship, Prongs, it’s too important.” Sadness coloured his words. He glanced one last time at the pair in the window and headed out of the portrait. He didn’t know where he was going, but all he knew was he needed to be away from Remus before he did something stupid.

Perseus Cluster of Galaxies

This Moon-sized patch of sky looks back ten billion light-years and shows about 100,000 galaxies, plus some stars from our own galaxy (points with diffraction spikes).

The cluster's Y shape reveals the gravitational influence of dark matter filaments, the web of the universe which until now was too big to fit in any telescope's view.

The Hidden Galaxy (IC 342)

Euclid took only 5 hours to peer through the thickest part of our own galaxy edge-on and capture this galaxy hidden behind it.

Its spiral shape gives us an idea what the Milky Way would look like from above. The image is false color: red has been shifted towards blue so infrared can be shifted up to red we can see.

Irregular Dwarf Galaxy NGC 6822

Just 1.6 million light-years from Earth, this little companion to the Milky Way is so close that until now it could only be captured in low res by ground telescopes or zoomed in to just one small part by Webb or Hubble.

It has a lot of old, low-metal, first-generation stars that can help astronomers study the universe's history.

Globular Star Cluster NGC 6397

It looks similar to a dwarf galaxy, but is much smaller and closer at just 7800 light-years away, and it's within the Milky Way. Perturbations of its outer stars in streaks and waves give clues about gravitational interactions within the Milky Way.

Again, other telescopes can't see the whole cluster in any detail, both because of its size and the high contrast between the bright center and faint outer stars, which would take Hubble hours to capture. Euclid imaged both in just an hour.

The Horsehead Nebula

This smear of dust lies in the larger star-forming region of the Orion Nebula just below Orion's belt. It's one of the most busy star nurseries in our vicinity, just 1375 light-years away.

Euclid's resolution is such that close study of this one-hour exposure should reveal many baby stars, brown dwarfs, and young Jupiter-mass planets.

All canon ship titles that Kubo gave them! Insane!

I shipped them so hard even before I even knew what shipping was. They were the gateway into so many avenues for me, and without them, I don't think I'd even be writing today. I've never loved a ship more than them (or since).

They're so, so good for each other. Ichigo brings out her more assertive side that she hardly ever gets to express, which also pulls her out of her self-sacrificing funks. Rukia dries the rain in his heart (canon metaphor for depression and helplessness) and constantly pushes him to care more about himself and the people around him.

Not to mention canon sun/moon imagery, a canon rescue arc with a twist (she refuses to be saved because she thinks she deserves to suffer for bringing him into her world), and hits like this:

And so many canon moments in-between! The entirety of the manga to me is their love story until the end.

selene, goddess of the moon (asteroid 580)

Selene, according to Hesiod, is the daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia. It was said that this goddess flew the moon across the sky. The only time she did not was when she was ordered to stop by Zeus during the Gigantomachy so as cloak Heracles and Zeus who searched for an herb to defeat the giants. One of her most famous moments in myth was the story of her love affair with a mortal named Endymion. Selene once flew over the sky and saw the shepherd Endymion asleep on a hill (sometimes it is said that he spelt in a cave). She was enraptured by his beauty; she simply had to be with him on earth. So she waited for the new moon, when no one would notice her absence from the sky, and spent the night next to him as he slept. Selene was a lover of Zeus so it is a bit unclear what happened next - it is thought that she had two children with Zeus but likely 50 daughter with Endymion (possibly a rape situation if he was always asleep - some sources say he was cursed to sleep forevermore because he fell in love with Hera then toss out of the heavens). Some sources note that it was Endymion that chose to sleep forever, others state that Selene begged Zeus to put Endymion to sleep eternally so that he wouldn't age nor would he die, another option is that this was a punishment for Selene from Zeus that she had been having sexual relations with Endymion. IN MY OPINION Selene in your chart can represent a) femininity, b) transformation, c) secret tasks, d) fertility, e) inability to control your sexual temptations, and/or f) unhealthy romantic behaviors that go unchecked.

i encourage you to look into the aspects of selene along with the sign, degree, and house placement. for the more advanced astrologers, take a look at the persona chart of selene AND/OR add the other characters involved to see how they support or impede selene!

WHAT "NOTHING" LOOKS LIKE WHEN CAPTURED BY THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE.

OVERVIEW: "In 1995, astronomer Bob Williams wanted to point the Hubble Space Telescope at a patch of sky filled with absolutely nothing remarkable. For 100 hours.

It was a terrible idea, his colleagues told him, and a waste of valuable telescope time. People would kill for that amount of time with the sharpest tool in the shed, they said, and besides — no way would the distant galaxies Williams hoped to see be bright enough for Hubble to detect.

Plus, another Hubble failure would be a public relations nightmare. Perceptions of the project, which had already cost multiple billions of dollars, were pretty dismal. Not much earlier, astronauts had dragged Hubble into the cargo bay of the space shuttle Endeavour and corrected a disastrous flaw in the prized telescope’s vision. After the fix, the previously blind eye in the sky could finally see stars as more than blurred points of light. And now, finally, it was time to start erasing the frustrations of Hubble’s early years.

Except that staring at nothing and coming up empty didn’t seem like the best way to do that.

But Williams was undeterred. And, to be honest, it didn’t really matter how much his colleagues protested. As director of the Space Telescope Science Institute, he had a certain amount of Hubble’s time at his personal disposal. “The telescope allocation committee would never have approved such a long, risky project,” he explains. “But as director, I had 10 percent of the telescope time, and I could do what I wanted.”

Wiliams suspected the billion light-year stare might capture eons of galactic evolution in a single frame and uncover some of the faintest, farthest galaxies ever seen. And to him, the potential observations were so important and so fundamental for understanding how the universe evolved that the experiment was a no-brainer, consequences be damned.

“Scientific discovery requires risk,” Williams says. “And I was at a point in my career where I said, “If it’s that bad, I’ll resign. I‘ll fall on my sword.’”

So, with his job perhaps on the line, Williams went off, put together a small team of post-docs, and did exactly as he’d planned. For 100 hours, between Dec. 18 and 28, Hubble stared at a patch of sky near the Big Dipper’s handle that was only about 1/30th as wide as the full moon. In total, the telescope took 342 pictures of the region, each of which was exposed for between 25 and 45 minutes. The images were processed and combined, then colored, and 17 days later, released to the public.

It turned out that “nothing” was actually stuffed with of galaxies. More than 3,000 of them came spilling out, some roughly 12 billion years old. Spiral, elliptical, irregular – red, white, blue, and yellow – the smudges of light that leapt from the final composite image cracked the universe in ways scientists never could have imagined."

a/n: much like my previous peter x reader fanfic, i’m pretty sure this works with any of the peters (tobey, andrew, or tom) so feel free to choose whichever you want to imagine this story with.

The snow was a beautiful clean white, the fireplace was crackling with bewitching flames, the songs were cheerful and merry, but Christmas wasn’t complete without her.

Peter gazes at Y/N, who seems to be staring intently at the window, the view being the sight of falling snowflakes and bursts of cold wind that would sway past. But, something else caught his eye. Something that was hanging on top of her—a mistletoe. That vibrant patch of green leaves decorated with dots of red that form into a perfect circle was located directly above her head. She was clever.

“Under a mistletoe?” He questions cheekily as he approaches the surprised woman.

Finally turning around, she faces her boyfriend, who had a smirk plastered on his lips. “What?”

“Why are you under a mistletoe?” He repeats.

Y/N shrugs, deciding to play along. “Oh… I’m waiting for someone.”

A look of hurt spreads across his face as he places a hand over his chest, pretending as though he had just been stabbed. “Really? Who is he? I’m insanely jealous.”

Y/N giggles at his little performance, to which he simply smiles to.

They continue to gaze out at the dark night sky, the moon glowing brightly atop of the world. It was stunning, but, something else was occupying Peter’s stream of thoughts.

“I’m glad you came,” he confesses, sincerity evident in his tone.

Y/N turns back to connect her eyes with his once more, slightly taken aback with his sudden confession. “Of course I would. Why wouldn’t I?”

Peter shrugs, letting a soft sigh escape his lips. “I don’t know, I mean, it’s Christmas eve. I was expecting you to be with your parents.”

Y/N gently grabs onto his hands, pulling him closer. “I’d rather be with you this Christmas.”

Peter smiles warmly at her gesture, appreciating her genuineness. “Me too.”

That was when they finally closed the gap and kissed each other with full of love, the mistletoe still dangling above their heads as they make this Christmas feel more special… together.

So, my understanding is that FengShen Yanyi is before Journey to que west. My question is, are the events of Lotus Lantern before Sun Wukong wants a place in heaven? I know those three stories the most, but I don't know if there are any others that I should know. I also wanted to ask where Chang'e's story falls between these stories.

The Investiture of the Gods, also known by its Chinese names Fengshen Yanyi (Chinese: 封神演義) story is set in the era of the decline of the Shang dynasty (1600–1046 BC) and the rise of the Zhou dynasty (1046–256 BC).

I'm taking this from when the legends are either first mentioned OR have said IN THE TEXT when they are to take place. Chang'e was first mentioned in the Zhou Dynasty, but I am not sure if the story is meant to be even earlier depending. I have also seen that the story of Chang'e first appeared in the Shang Dynasty hexagram "Gui Zang ". The complete story of Chang'e flying to the moon was first recorded in "Huainanzi·Lanmingxun" of the Western Han Dynasty. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, the relationship between Chang'e and Yi was established, and Chang'e turned into a toad that made medicine after entering the moon palace. After the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the image of Chang'e returned to being a woman. In Han Dynasty portraits, Chang'e has the head of a human and the body of a snake. Her hair is in a high bun, she wears a long jacket with wide sleeves, and her long tail is decorated with short, barb-shaped feathers. After the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Chang'e was portrayed as a peerless beauty. 

Xiyouji is also very much in the Tang dynasty and is even said to have prolonged the Tang dynasty within the novel. Wukong’s birth and creation is to be sometime in the Warring States period and to be guessed in the Qin Dynasty. Lotus Lantern ALSO was created in the Tang Dynasty and from my understanding and its first interaction is when Liu Xiang (someone said Liu Xi) is a scholar of the Han Dynasty and went to Beijing to take an exam (this is the version of lotus Lanter were he gets remarried) He passed by the Huashan Temple and wrote a poem in the temple. He teased the temple deity, the Sanseng Mu of Huayue. Sanseng Mu was so angry that they wanted to kill him but fell in love with him in the end. I cannot say that if the original version is meant to be before or after the Wukong has been punished by heaven and is under the mountain but considering that Wukong mentions Erlang's mother and not his nephew that would be a good suggestion that is after in this version. It is in the Qin Dynasty do we see the version that Lotus Lantern being definitively placed after Wukong going on his journey in Tang Dynasty, making the legends VERY recent in comparison to others. This is the version where Chengxiang's father doesn't get remarried and is the more popular of the two honestly.

Marc's pov: Port Problems

Summary: Jackals are attacking the port and Khonshu is a little antsy about it. Marc calls in backup and goes to sort it out.

"The jackals have a reputation for being ruthless and vicious, attacks like this wouldn't be unusual for them, but with the nature of this attack and the timing of it all, it definitely raises suspicions. Find the source."

Right.

Not too early into his night and Khonshu was pulling him out from the alleys to go to the port and deal with an urgent matter. Maintenance workers dead. The cause being the bigger concern.

It was the most coherent Khonshu had been with him in a long time. Marc believed the cause to be the jackals’ arrival has the god well and truly wigged out. He never did like being outshone by anyone. Khonshu wouldn’t say that, of course, but Marc had worked with him enough years to pick up on some things. This wasn’t something he should be going out and doing alone. Their talk hadn't instilled any confidence.

Finger hovered over a few people in his contacts from the Defenders. Group texting sounded like his own personal hell. There was team and then there was team. Fuck that.

He text one person he knew would come.

Port asap. It’s bad. Could do with you.

Jackals weren’t going to wait for anyone. Marc went in alone. A steady stream of animals erupted out from a sewer entrance. Overrunning the port in all directions. Workers fled, trying to outrun the animals. A bloodbath.

One worker had gotten themself into an enclosed space in a forklift. Jackals either side of the door beginning to tear through metal and glass. One squealed as it was hit with a crescent moon into the back of its neck. The other got one to the face within the next second of it looking up.

Both fell back and searched for the aggressor. Marc used the cape to bring him down and pulled out more crescents. Out of view, a few howled in communication with one another. They had a new target now. More civilians were still out there. He needed to find where they were coming from.

Theseus in Crete, Part 2

That same night Theseus did as he was told; but whether he killed the Minotaur with a sword given to him by Ariadne, or with his bare hands, or with his celebrated club, is much disputed. (Theseus in Crete, The Greek Myths by Robert Graves pp 339-342).

Theseus emerged from the labyrinth, covered in the Minotaur’s blood, and Ariadne embraced him passionately before leading him, and the Athenian prisoners who had been freed, to the harbour where they boarded a purloined ship and made their escape. They provisioned on the island of Dia but, that night, while Ariadne slept, Theseus embarked again with the Athenians, leaving the Cretan princess behind. Why Theseus did this is much disputed: some say he had acquired a new mistress; others that the god Dionysus, desiring Ariadne, drove Theseus off; others maintain Theseus wanted to avoid scandal at the Athenian court. Whatever the reason, Theseus’ desertion of the woman who had saved he and his people on Crete, must count as one of the greatest betrayals of all time.

The distraught Ariadne, finding herself alone on Dia, invoked Zeus for vengeance, to which the King of the Gods assented. Eventually Dionysus and his merry train rescued Ariadne and he married her. Graves asserts Ariadne was likely to have been a priestess of the Moon goddess and her marriage to Theseus, representing invading patriarchal Achaeans on Crete, would have made dynastic and religious sense to both parties.
