wilds era complaining under the cut I just finally figured out a thing that's been making my brain itchy

Honestly as much more as I liked TotK than BotW because all I really wanted from BotW was more atmospheric spaces and more story, learning that Fujibayashi was an experience designer for horror attractions makes everything I hated about the last three big zelda titles (the ones he directed) make so much sense.

If you've known me for the past few years, you have definitely heard me complain about not being able to ride my horse in the desert, despite the reason for that limitation being a story beat that you have to resolve, and despite resolving it, you still cannot use that mechanic in that area.

I thought this was just a Me, Personally complaint -- but it's actually a perfect summary of the Entire Issue I have:

Fujibayashi's games don't prioritize story at all. By his own description, everything in his games are about mechanics and getting from point a to point b to make you use those mechanics. The story is just set dressing to get you to move around the map, which is true of all games to an extent. And because that's true of all games to an extent, I thought this was just an issue I had with open world games.

But Hollow Knight doesn't have that problem, nor does Psychonauts 2, nor Journey, nor really any other open world game that I've played. This is because -- per the developers -- those maps expanded organically and were built out as the story expanded.

So the issue is that most of those games use mechanics as a vehicle for you to explore the world and story. Fujibayashi's games use the world and story as a vehicle for you to explore the mechanics.

And Fujibayashi is a solid environmental storyteller, but he's also really not a storyteller. It's clearly not what he enjoys doing and not what he prioritizes. He likes planning routes and making puzzles, which is great! Games rely on that skillset! It's very important!

Except, people who play narrative games usually want a compelling narrative more than a trick to get from here to there. Fans will take the long road to find lore at the end of it. Aunoma was better at that, which is why traveling in OoT and WW sucks for 70% of the game but the stories are more devoted and the hints were more compelling, but now he just (by his own description) mostly nods or shakes his head at whatever Fujibayashi is doing.

For comparison, look at Journey, which is ONLY environmental storytelling. There is No dialogue or really any developed characters, and it is one of the most highly rated, heavily awarded games in recent history.

I genuinely did and do enjoy TotK. But it REALLY concerns me if the director hadn't thought of it as directly referencing prior games, despite considering himself a huge fan of the series. Especially because TotK even mimicked the plot of his OWN game (Zelda is whisked away, goes back in time, seals herself in an unreachable state to make a sword to defeat the evil that came from below and then is an immortal who magically turns human because of love, Impa is the only one who knows about it, the sky people inventing the kingdom of Hyrule, etc).

I do honestly assume that's a mistranslation of him not having heard that some people thought it was recreating Ocarina of Time, specifically, because he later seemed to be on team 'It's All Intentionally The Same Legend Being Retold in Each Game' (which is all well and good).

All this to say, I think Fujibayashi is a skilled engineer but that man needs a co-director who really prioritizes story. If Nintendo gets him one we'll probably get a really good game out of it.

Hi, this is a big post about my new TTRPG, Defy the Gods, which I’m Kickstarting soon. It’s a queer sword & sorcery adventure-romance set in fantasy ancient Mesopotamia. I was inspired by Conan, Clash of the Titans (1981!) and Princess Mononoke. (I've also got a BlueSky megathread going about it.)

(Btw hi I'm Chris, a queer, trans game designer in Columbus, Ohio. This will be my second published game. The first was a furry pack of nonsense called Raccoon Sky Pirates.)

Defy the Gods is sword & sorcery as a story game. My favorite PbtA games emulate specific stories and lead you to resonant emotional moments like you find in those stories. Here, I used PbtA to emulate sword & sorcery, with an emphasis on the romantic moments—but also plenty of metal 🤘. You use the flirtation mechanics (taken from Thirsty Sword Lesbians) to tempt, support, or thwart others. But then, you can roll too high (taken from Apocalypse Keys), where you get more than you bargained for. Like Conan running out of the Tower of the Elephant while it crumbles around him.

Also like Conan, you have a glorious destiny, but in this case it ain’t good. Rising to your most powerful self makes you monstrous, heralding your character’s end as a hero and their beginning as an NPC antagonist.

It’s a queer game. You can fall in love with anyone, or make them fall in love with you. But because the game is also about power, the gods and tyrants wait to stomp on you if your enticement falls flat. Like if you flirt with someone in the wrong neighborhood. Every character has their own arc, and one of the things I had the most fun with was making those feel like queer problems as well as ancient-world sword & sorcery problems.

Play a fierce Sword, chaos-loving Sorcerer, fugitive Revenant, mischievous Sailor, immortal-sworn Vessel, or wild-raised Wolfling. (All character portraits by Thalie Shelen @thalieshelen)

The Sword is big-hearted and violent. You have a move that lets you kill any human-sized mortal NPC within arm’s reach, without rolling, if you’re not already in combat. This always causes more problems than it solves.

While most players roll just 2d6 & add their stat, the Sorcerer casts spells by rolling a lot of dice & looking for patterns in them. If you can’t find any patterns, your sorcery runs amok. This chaos is kind of lovely. For instance, you're always changing your body—sometimes on purpose, sometimes not. But always gorgeous.

The Revenant is like Inanna, or if Eurydice made it out. They escaped the land of the dead. They aren’t who they were in their past life, nor who they were as a shade. They're still figuring out who they are now. Demons pursue them to claw them back to the Underworld.

The Sailor can call on a cast of past friends and lovers for help. They always have a plan, and an eye for the exit. One of their moves lets you fill in the map of the otherwise unknown world.

The Vessel is in love with a minor god. They channel their patron’s power by wounding themself, but their patron can also soothe their pain.

The Wolfling was raised by animals in the Wilds and is curious about the humans, but they belong in neither world. They're definitely the part most directly inspired by Princess Mononoke.

The World Forces are the antagonist. You build them at the table, in quick rounds of pick lists. They are:

The Pantheon: gods, goddesses, and demons. They make the rules, but maybe you can break them.

The City: tyrants, the wealthy, and others with the gods' blessing. They push you to the margins, but you can fight to be seen.

The Wilds: gigantic creatures and their trackless wilderness home. It's place of danger and new rules, but you'll probably break them.

The Shadow of Atlantis: long-gone elders. They dared to scorn the gods, and the Pantheon destroyed them for it, but through you they may live again.

Death: a hungry, totalitarian force. Its underground domain is the end for all mortals and the mockery of hope. But maybe you can return.

“Alright come on!” Steve bangs his bat on the side of the walls as he walks down the alley. He’s aware of the flashes of shadows moving around him. Aware of the smell of blood getting stronger around town.

He thought he’d be done with this. It had been six months since their last fight with Vecna. They closed all the portals for good but some creatures still managed to make their way out.

Steve and the rest of the screw had spent all of their spare time patrolling the streets and following a tip line (the police scanner Dustin tapped into) looking.

Does it make him mad he’s had to cancel every date he’s had since they started this? Kinda. Does he think he’ll ever be on a normal date again? No.

The point is he missed his free time! He’s tired of these sons of bitches messing up his life and he misses his beauty sleep! Sue him.

Forgive him for not being excited to chase down another upside down creature and possibly get his face eaten.

Which brings us to here.

“C’mon kitty kitty! Let’s gooooo! Hurry up and show yourself so I can go home!”

Nothing. Just the dark alleyway with the sound of rustling bags and newspapers flying in the radioactive wind.

“C’mon fucker! Let’s end-WOAH” he finds himself being thrown into the air and winces as he lands harshly on the concrete.

There’s a weight on top of him. More human than demo dog. He feels legs straddle his waist and arms holding his chest down.

“Steve.” His eyes fly open.

Eddie Munson is straddling him. Dead Eddie Munson is looking down at him with pupils more like slits than the wide doe eyes that haunt Steve’s dreams.

Eddie’s breathing so hard his mouth is open and Steve can spot teeth that look sharper than normal. Can see more teeth than he remembers humans having. His mouth has a red ring around it, some dried red liquid reaching all the way to his chin.

Eddie leans down until their foreheads are touching. Like he’s pleading with Steve.

“Man, you’ve gotta help me.”

This little piece came to me out of the blue that is inspired by that once scene in Princess Mononoke. You know the one.

RIP to who could’ve been Benjicot Blackwood, you absolutely made those few minutes your own and my heart is forever yours. You were just too good.

You hated to admit it, but Benjicot was handing you your ass on a diamond encrusted gold plater. He currently had you trying to create some distance between the two of you, however he was smart enough to prevent you from doing so by closing the gap between you once again, which served nothing but to infuriate you.

And that infuriation must’ve been evident as you could hear Benjicot chuckle at your growing annoyance with him and your lack of retaliation. ‘I was expecting more from you,’ Ben started as your swords clashed, ‘considering the amount of shit that you talked beforehand about how easily you could take me, but it seems that’s all it was, shit.’

You gritted your teeth as you managed to push him back and managed to nick him with your sword, but that was about as much luck as the gods were going to grant you that day as Ben looked at his newly acquired cut on the back of his hand in disbelief, before looking back up at you as his eyes narrowed and jaw clenched as he engaged in a clashing of swords with you once more.

You honestly didn’t remember how you and Benji got on opposite sides of the others sword, it just happened and now all you could do for the rest of your life was hate him simply for being a Blackwood, the ancient grudge long forgotten to time as sin begets sin became the norm for your waring houses.

You must’ve been too far within your own mind to be aware of your footing for just as Benji was about to bring his sword down on yours, you tripped over something and landed flat on the grass, blinking up in confusion as Benjicot took this as an opportunity to keep you to the ground with his sword held to your throat.

‘I’ll cut your throat, that’ll shut you up.’ He snarled, his face merely a hairs breath away from yours that all you could see was him, and you wouldn’t mind dying right then and there if Benjicot Blackwood was the last man you saw before the stranger took you.

‘You’re beautiful.’ You said out of impulse, almost as though they were words that you have been meaning to tell him but couldn’t, you were born to hate him as he was born to hate you, and yet your heart sang of his soft hair, plush lips and his fierce but kind eyes.

Benji’s glare faltered as did the grip on his sword as he looked at you as though you had said something completely unfounded, his eyes flickered with uncertainty as they dart across your face for any signs that you were lying; there wasn’t.

You were being truthful and it wasn’t until upon that revelation did Benjicot recognise what he was feeling towards you, and for once it wasn’t hatred.

At first, Kusuriuri himself wasn't interested. You were just like the other humans he had met: naive and stubborn, oblivious to the existence of "Mononoke"—spirits that are known to transform into powerful monsters after being influenced by human emotions and actions. But you have a good heart, he'll give you that.

Slowly, as time progressed by, you've grown to become aware of them, while developing a sense of respect and appreciation for Kusuriuri—like Kayo, therefore making him change his way of treatment towards you. He became kinder, more lenient, and perhaps a bit of fondness was added to his dictionary.

Observing you had become one of his habits, as he watched you from afar with an attentive gaze. Your lovely eyes, your vibrant smile, the way you handle the butterflies with tenderness, all of it went into the paper in his hand him. His hand moved languidly with precision, memories of you sprouting from the tip of his brush, forever engraved into the canva, blooming like flowers. He couldn't help it, you were just too pure, too good for him: A kitsune and a mortal, separated by fate. Kusuriuri sighed, looking up from his drawing, as his eyes landed on you again. It was almost finished, with your eyes still missing. Goodness' sake, was it hard to capture the beauty of them, to truly express them through ink and paint.

"... I need to finish my painting.." Kusuriuri mumbled to himself, albeit a bit frustrated. He just hoped that you wouldn't notice him, despite his obviously intense staring, 'he's not a creep he promise.'

He looked down at the unfinished drawing, before looking back up again, startled by the sight of you in front of him. "Ah— [Name]-san... Do you need my help with anything?" Kusuriuri asked, trying to make his voice sound calm and collected, hiding the slight tremble. Dear Heaven, you were even more gorgeous up close, so delightful that he had to restrain himself from fainting right then and there. He kept eye contact with you, hoping to distract you from the portrait he was hiding beneath his sleeves.

"You seem troubled, Kusuriuri-sama. Is there anything I can do to help you?" You questioned calmly, a hint of concern in your voice. "A— Well... It's nothing, really. I'm just feeling a bit stressed." He lied, averting his gaze. "Then... Would you like some tea to ease it off?"

"... Sure. A cup of tea sounds nice."

The Red Thread [The Medicine Seller/Kusuriuri x Reader Soulmate AU]

When you'd first seen the thin red string that was neatly tied to your pinkie finger, you knew immediately that Okuninushi no Mikoto, the God of Love and Marriage, had bound you to your soulmate.

You so badly wanted to meet them, but you were a little afraid that they might not be what you had imagined. However, as days turned into weeks and weeks into months, the red string remained a constant reminder of the divine connection you shared with your soulmate. You found yourself growing more and more curious about who they could be, wondering if they were thinking about you too.

The anticipation and excitement continued to build, filling your heart with a mixture of hope and apprehension. Every time you looked at the string, you felt a surge of warmth and comfort, knowing that somewhere out there, your soulmate was waiting for you.

Thus, you began your journey through the land of Edo in search of the one connected to you by the red string of fate.

From bustling streets and rural villages to serene gardens and sacred shrines, the sense of connection you felt grew stronger. With each step you took, you felt an unfamiliar, small tug on your pinkie.

However, nothing came from those small tugs on the string. Despite the initial excitement and hope that had filled your heart, the absence of any further signals left you feeling uncertain and restless. You began to wonder if perhaps you had misinterpreted the signs or if the timing was simply not right.

As you were about to lose all hope, you suddenly felt that one constant pull, and you almost thought your finger was going to come off.

Curiosity is eating you alive. You take a deep breath and stand, following the string whenever it tugs. It was as if it was guiding you.

You want to know who you are connected to and why. You follow until the red string leads you to a red torii gate. Passing through, you're met with a gorgeous garden of pink hydrangeas and a beautiful shrine covered in papar Ofuda.

You stare at it in awe for a moment until the red string begins to glow brightly.

Slowly, you approach the shrine and see a man sitting on the engawa.

He had dirty blonde hair and wore a purple bandanna. He's dressed in a vibrant kimono with beautiful psychedelic patterns, and his appearance looks elven-like. The outsides of his eyes are outlined by strange markings, with the ones underneath forming the appearance of teardrops. And his upper lip is painted purple, making it appear that he is constantly smiling.

He doesn't look human at all. In fact, he remained like a sly fox. But the red string seems to connect to him as it does to you.

For a moment, you stare at him until his gaze meets yours.

"Oh!" His voice is velvety and attractive as he raises a tad, "A visitor."

Suddenly, you felt naked as he shamelessly eyed you up and down; the corners of his mouth curled along with his painted lips in an amused smirk.

"To what do I owe the pleasure of this special visit?" He asked.

"Are you... my soulmate?" You asked shyly, slowly inching your way closer.

You wanted to get closer to him, but stopped a few feet from him so as not to invade his personal space. You were strangers. The enchanted Ofuda covering the shrine acts as a warning to you to keep away.

"Hmm, perhaps I am." He tilts his head in question. "First, I'm hunting Mononoke, and the next thing I know is that I have a red string tied to my finger."

He then eyed the string tied to your own finger as his smile widens. Gently, he pulls at the red thread as if trying to pull you forward.

"It would seem the old man has a sense of humor," He said.

Your face heats up in embarrassment as you shyly avert your gaze toward the ground. However, another tug on the string brings your attention back to him.

"Anyway, I've been waiting for you to come find me," He replies.

"Y-you have?"

He nods.

"Though, you'll have to excuse all these... decorations," he says, gesturing towards the paper ofuda covering the shrine. "They were for safety measures in case you were a mononoke. Okuninushi is an old friend of mine, and I had assumed this was his way of a joke. But apparently I was wrong."

"Uh, do you have a name?" You asked him.

"I'm just a humble medicine seller," He answers nonchalantly.

"You don't have a name?" You tilt your head in question.

Another smile graced his painted lips, and he is like a fox.

"I am but a humble medicine seller, nothing more."

Did he simply not have a name, or was he hiding it out of habit? Either way, you decided to call him as is.

"Kusuriuri, then," you say.

The Medicine Seller, or "Kusuriuri," grins in response, the sight of his sharp canines making your heart thump faster as the red string of fate that connects you both glows brighter.

Soon, he silently motions you over to sit next to him, which, after a little hesitation, you do.

For a moment, neither of you speak, the tranquil silence enveloping the space between you like a soft, comforting blanket, creating an atmosphere filled with anticipation. You feel Kusuriuri's enigmatic gaze on you, and for a second, you think that he's displeased by what he sees.

What if he finds you mediocre, ugly, or disgusting?

"Are you happy with the result?" He suddenly asked, nearly making you jump.

"Eh?" You meet his gaze. "M-me..?"

He nods in response, a gentle affirmation that propels your heart into a flurry of emotions as you realize the depth of his query.

"Yes."

Oh! Apparently he was having the same thoughts as you and is now asking if you're happy with the outcome.
