So is the Plastic Man who was in the All-Star Squadron and the Freedom Fighters the same guy who's still around today with the Justice League? The current one is so rarely serious in interviews I can't find any concrete information.
I know there's plenty of other Golden Agers who are still around, but he still looks exactly the same and so does this "Woozy" Winks guy who's in a lot of pictures with him.
Same guy. Same weird, WEIRD guy.
Tumblr media
(A recent "glamor shot" published by Mammoth City Magazine) Because his identity is publically available I can help clear up some confusion for you. Plastic Man's birth name is Patrick "Eel" O'Brien. Little is known about his birth family save some measure of Irish ancestry. His father was abusive and abandoned Eel at a young age to a Catholic nunnery. Eel counts the main factor in his fall toward crime being his lack of a positive male role model, meaning the most affection and attention he got was from street toughs and gangsters. He started by running simple errands, then couriering illicit goods, then dealing, by the time of his adulthood he was running a small outfit in Mammoth City, New Jersey. Everything went wrong when he was shot during a robbery of the Crawford Chemical Works. Blundering into a rack of barrels a large industrial acid was dumped all over him, even entering his wound. He was presumed dead but actually ended up under the care of an order of monks known as Rest Haven. Taken in and given asylum despite his criminal past, O'Brien discovered that he could morph his body in any way he desired, save for its color. Viewing the monks as role models in his new life, Eel gave up crime and decided to make the most of his second chance. His crime career was helped by Wolfgang "Woozy" Winks (as far as I can tell that is the man's legal name) a former small time criminal who became a bumbling if loyal confidant to the man of rubber. He was, of course, drafted into the All Star Squadron during the war where he gravitated toward working alongside Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters. He says that despite pitching it as wanting to be "as close to Phantom Lady as possible, mrrrowww" (sic) it was actually because like earlier in his life he respected Uncle Sam as a reasonable and appreciative male role model. For his famous sense of humor he was regarded as a trustworthy and respected member of the Freedom Fighters until the war's end. He was left behind when the Freedom Fighters made their exodus to Earth X, although the reasons have never been made fully clear as to why. He spent the next several decades working for the FBI, hunting down mobsters, killers and robbers under a low profile as to not upset the provisions of the Keane Act. At some point during this period he engaged in a prolonged affair with a woman named Angel McDunnagh (She is by all accounts a very kind and patient but utterly mundane woman. Do not go looking for her. Seriously don't. He tends to get testy if she complains about people snooping.) which resulted in the birth of their son Ernie Luke McDunnagh O'Brien. It just so happens that around this same time, Superman's appearance and the formation of the JLA rendered the Keane Act moot when Plastic Man reappeared on the scene. This lead to Angel and Eel separating and Eel becoming rapidly estranged from his son. Plastic Man would eventually be granted membership on the Justice League where he served with distinction and commendation, risking life and limb for his comrades, innocents and all mankind more than once. Even eventually making an effort to step back into his son's life. At this moment in time he is associated both with The Terrifics, a group of respected superhuman multiversal explorers as well as the brand new "Justice League Unlimited" initiative. As I have said many, MANY times before, I will not judge a man like Plastic Man by his attitude. Especially when there's not a damn thing wrong with his attitude. The man grew up in the shadow of the great depression, abandoned to a nunnery, became a criminal before he finished middle school, was mutagentically deformed and decided all of that was reason enough to turn into the GOOD GUY. And the psychological trade off the he makes is that he's kinda goofy. He has faced the worst of the worst from literal nazis on down the list, I say he gets to break the tension however he damn well feels like it.

Aviary System Intro Post
We've been putting this off for too long it's time to make something. We'll edit this as time goes on. For now, basic info and a list of current headmates. It should be a pretty decent frame of reference for our system, account, and individual headmates.
It's gonna get long so I'm gonna drop a read-more here.
Feel free to ask questions about our system :) we love answering and aren’t shy about interacting with doubles or sourcemates for the most part.
We're traumagenic, probably an OSDD system but not diagnosed. We are pro-endo and will block anti-endo blogs. So if you've got a problem with endogenic systems, get out. You don't know them better than they do.
We won’t block you outright but if you reblog a lot of content from anti-endo users that isn’t outright anti-endo (like generic system experiences with a “endos dni” tag on it), we won’t follow back. We have “anti endo,” “endos dni,” and similar tags filtered so it shows us even if your repost doesn’t have those tags. We have them filtered because anti-endo people suck and we don’t want to accidentally reblog something from them!
On that topic, we're also supportive of xenogenders, neopronouns, otherkin, and other stuff like that. Bigotry will not be tolerated even if we don't have someone in our system who identifies with a certain label.
We don't have a full DNI list yet but it's kinda the usual for the most part, don’t be a dick or a bigot.
We tend to dislike blocking people since we want people to be allowed to speak, but if we say we’re done with an argument and that we’ll start blocking people who try to continue it, we mean it. That’s something we have to do for our mental health and if one member of the system doesn’t start blocking people to end an argument, someone else will.
Some of our headmates are littles and our host age regresses so we may interact with agere content, we feel obligated to say that our littles and regressors are not like this as some sort of kink, this is not DDLG, do not treat them as such. Our littles do not consent to being sexualized and that is a blockable offense for their safety.
Due to having littles we will refrain from following more adult blogs to curate our feeds for their comfort. Also, we won’t reblog or post NSFW on our account. That’s not a DNI, we just probably won’t follow you if you post too much of that, but we’re not gonna like block you or anything.
(Maybe we should make a sideblog dedicated to our littles though? Idk)
We're diagnosed with ADHD but probably also have autism, anxiety, and PTSD.
We consider ourselves a transmasc system because most of us are masculine, so you can call us by he/him, though we're used to people referring to us collectively by plural they/them. Ironically a lot of our headmates consider themselves cis in the wrong body bc plurality is just odd like that- even those who do consider themselves trans do so independently of the body, instead being trans in headspace.
We have a lot of fictives.
We tag posts with whoever made them or reblogged them under the format of [name] post.
Headmates
Condensed down for readability and ease of upkeep! And also because some of us had concerns we were sharing a little too much info.

Hi, fellow migraine sufferer! Okay, now that I'm a bit more awake (I got 4 hours of sleep today), let me try and explain this a bit more.
Literary and religious anthropology often run into a very specific function of religion: When something happens that can't be explained with current methods--anything from hailstones killing people to glowy rocks before we knew what radioactive material was--people will generally come up with a symbolic and cultural context. This is usually lumped in the 'religious' category, because religion can definitely be about morality and gods and whatnot, but it often also served as a gathering point for science before anyone formalized the scientific method. There's a reason Hindu priests pioneered vaccines and Gregor Mendel was a monk; organized religion allowed for scientific advancement.
The example I used was very specific. When I say migraine auras, I am only referring to the visual symptom of seeing colorful lights around a person or object. (None of this, ever, will help anyone diagnose or treat a migraine.) There was a point where New Age religions had shown up, but no one knew that this was a migraine symptom.
New Agers in general tend to be folks who have Weird Shit happen to us. It's part of why New Age religions focus so much on comparative religion. Can't explain this? Maybe someone else talks about it--you won't get hard data, but you might be able to find tips like 'when that colorful stuff happens, go sit down and don't expect to function for a while' or 'when the knocking sounds in the mine, you're about to get the roof caving on your head' or 'if you hear spirits all the time and they're being nice, they might have some good advice occasionally, but try and remember they're also assholes sometimes too'.
Therefore, New Agers found various stuff and figured, well, maybe it's some kind of symbolism. Sometimes your brain does really weird stuff, but it turns out useful or helpful, and we're STILL mapping out how a lot of it works. Unsurprisingly, migraines affect people very differently, but sometimes your brain continues to spit out information. If you're NT\socially gifted, it may be useful information, and you end up conflating that with the colors.
And thus, people thought it was a spiritual phenomenon. In reality, it was a conflation of a couple things: The medical symptoms, the complex interactions of some parts of the brain going into overdrive while others shit the bed, and the symbolic and cultural nature of just trying to figure out what the weird shit is when you don't have data.
Parapsychology is, aside from scammers, usually people with various science degrees and people who have Weird Shit happening coming together to try and figure out what's happening, in as scientific a manner as possible. This is obviously hampered by the fact that the only terms anyone has for these events are religious, which don't always play well with numbers-based sciences, and even soft sciences are kind of addicted to numbers and equations where they really don't work.
But what that means in practice is that this is where science--weird, often wrong, and wholeheartedly attempted science--really does live. It's not very formal, it's a mess, and most people involved are trying to wrangle scientific principles with a day job and possibly not a lot of formal training, but people are trying to do it because they genuinely want to make everyone's life better.
This is science. And this is where scammers hang out. And this is where people are wrong. And the CIA didn't find Gandalf, but they found things that will probably be useful. And all of those things are part of what I can't formally study, but watch because this is important; this is where discovery is, not just of medicine or physics, but anthropology and sociology and psychology and history.
Thank you for discussing this politely, by the way. Screamy McScream up there was weird as hell. I know I don't always make a lot of sense, so if there's something that sounds weird, it usually helps everyone reading to ask about it, and it sounds like I didn't make much sense today.
"You say that psychic powers aren't real. But then why did the CIA invest millions of dollars in parapsychological research during the Cold War?" I don't know how to tell you this, but the CIA are dumb.

The "Third Eye" - It's not what you might think it is
Tumblr media
"How do I open my 'third eye'" is a question that I see very often asked around in the modern witch communities.
The real answer to that question is: long story short, you can't. You don't have access to the kind of training required for it. Unless you have access to legitimate and experienced teachers who really know this stuff back to back, who can walk you through every step of the process, and even then, there's no guarantee of success. It's not something that you can just "do".
The third eye is an ancient Hindu and Buddhist concept. It's not the "sight" or the "sixth sense" of western spiritualism.
The third eye refers to a gate or pathway that leads to the inner and supernatural realms, as well as spaces of higher consciousness. In Buddhism, the third eye symbolizes a state of enlightenment. The reason why it's said to be located in the middle of the forehead, is because it represents the enlightenment achieved through meditation, religious practice, and holy work. Buddhists regard the third eye as the "eye of consciousness", from which enlightenment beyond the physical sight is achieved. Do you know how hard it is to achieve any level of enlightenment? Pretty damn hard is the answer. Devout Buddhist monks and nuns will spend their whole lives working on it, knowing that it may or may not happen by the end of one lifetime.
The divine are the only beings that may come with their third eyes already open. In artworks of Buddhist deities such as Buddha or Guanyin, you will see an urna in between their eyebrows, portraying their third eyes. The god Erlang Shen of Chinese mythology, a nephew of the Emperor of Heaven and a celestial warrior, literally has a third eye, which he uses to see through all realms and dimensions, divine and mortal.
Mortals have to really work at it, if they really want it. But for mortals, no matter how hard you train, it may or may not happen for you.
Now, the third eye in Hinduism. Much thanks to my dearest Indian Hindu mutual @rue-cimon for providing all the helpful information!
You can't just "open" the third eye.
Can you focus on the spot during meditation? Yes. Can you visualize it as a center of energy? Yes.
But you can't open it. It's not "opening the third eye chakra" that New Agers love to toss around.
In Hinduism, it is the god Shiva, who is said to have a literal third eye. Which is why the ajna chakra is so important in Hinduism. It is said to connect one with the Brahman (universe) and allow one to receive "messages" from the past and the future. Hindus will place a tilaka (similar idea as the Buddhist urna) between the eyebrows as a representation of the third eye, to emphasize the importance of the ajna chakra and in honor of Shiva.
Hindus believe that the third eye, when opened, causes complete obliteration (think of it as an apocalypse), and that ability lies only with Shiva. Do you really think that we, mortals, can have that ability? Or should have that ability? Probably not, if you were to ask a Hindu.
So if you were to go with the Hindu side of this: you cannot open the third eye, period. It may not even be possible with a Tantric teacher. And the teachers wouldn't be instructing you on how to "open" that eye, but rather to simply visualize it and be more attuned to it. The least you can do is focus on the spot during meditation. That's it. That's about the most you can do on your own. Focus on the spot between your eyes, let your mind be at ease, try not to visualize anything, and don't think or expect anything. Just focus. Focus on your breath, on the rise and fall of your chest as you breathe. Do this for up to 20 minutes. You might feel different afterwards, but that's not your third eye "opening". It's what meditation, true meditation, will do to your body and mind.
So, bottom line, folks: don't try to pry open your third eye. It's not going to work, and you might even end up getting yourself into a load of trouble in the process.

Second deck just arrived!
Tumblr media
This is the Water Temple Oracle by Suzy Cherub with art by Laila Savolainen. It is a 44 card deck of goddesses and watery sacred sites.
The deck is structured into several "temples" (Mystic Temple, Healer Temple, etc.) each with a "goddess guardian" and "supporting guides" often her consort or children, as well as related symbols.
The goddesses are from many different cultures. There's Aphrodite, Brigid, Sulis Minerva, Our Lady of Lourdes, Ganga, Rán, Anuket, etc. Some examples of "supporting guides" are Ares and Shiva. I'll talk more about this list in a bit.
The art is very pretty. It reminds me of the artist who did the Whispers of the Ocean Oracle only this deck is human centric. The author and artist have done other decks I just don't have any of them.
My issues with this deck are the same sort of issues I have with other multicultural decks in that some of these deities are from living cultures and here they are shoved into a product that will mostly be consumed by people who are not from that culture with instructions like "call on Lord Shiva to fix x problem in your life". So working with this deck will be interesting.
My other issue with this deck is related to the first but one of the goddesses in this deck is Tara and I honestly cannot recall any connection with water and her. It was a bit jarring to get to the very end of the deck and see a "Tibetan Buddhist Monk" card. Does anyone know of any associations between Tara and watery sacred sites or is she in the deck because white New Agers think Vajrayana Buddhism is cool?

Podcast #392: How Jesuit Spirituality Can Improve Your Life
500 years ago, St. Ignatius of Loyola, a soldier turned religious convert, created the Society of Jesus. My guest today argues that many of the principles Ignatius used to guide the Jesuit order are just as applicable to living a flourishing life today.  His name is Father James Martin, he became a Jesuit priest after a stint in corporate America, and he’s the author of The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything: A Spirituality for Real Life. Today Father Martin and I discuss why the insights of Ignatian spirituality have proven useful to people from various faiths and backgrounds, and what these insights can teach us citizens of modernity. We discuss why you should pay more attention to your desires, the benefits of living simply, and how to free yourself from what Ignatius called “disordered attachments.” We also explore how not to be disappointed with your friends, how to improve those relationships, and how to think the best of others and ourselves.   While Father Martin’s advice is obviously given in the context of faith, nonbelievers will also find plenty of insights in this show. Show Highlights * The story of Ignatius of Loyola and how the Society of Jesus came to be  * The sometimes humorous, but also tragic vanity of Ignatius  * How Fr. Martin found his way into the priesthood, and the Society of Jesus specifically  * 4 tenets of Ignatian spirituality * The difference(s) between Christianity and Stoicism  * Why folks from all walks of life have appreciated the message of Fr. Martin’s book  * What is “the examen”? How does one practice it? * Why should we pay attention to our desires? * How do you learn to want to want the things you know are good? * What are “disordered attachments”? How do they mess us up? * How do we get over our disordered attachments?  * “Act like your best self would” * How to live simply without becoming a monk  * What is the principle of the presupposition? How can it help our relationships?  * How to love people as they are  * Keeping and nurturing friendships in adulthood  * The virtue of obedience  Resources/People/Articles Mentioned in Podcast * AoM series on spiritual disciplines  * Thomas Merton  * What Do You Want to Want? * You Can’t Return to Eden * Agere contra — acting against * Why You Should Go to Church — Even If You Aren’t Sure of Your Beliefs * Want to Feel Like a Man?
