Momofuku! I'm a big fan of David Chang and we loved the one in Vegas so of course we had to go to the one here. Best Pork Belly Bao Buns ever! This is Milk.

It has been quite the wait for myself and I’m now just getting around to coming here.

So what’s the fucking story with this place?

Well here goes...

I’m hoping I can do this story justice but here’s the bg story: basically, Christina Tosi was a consultant for David Chang and his restaurant: Momofuku. He was not in the good graces with the health department and needed help badly. A mutual friend connected them and she killed it, Chang offered her a job in the office. She put baking on the back burner for a bit and Chang teased her about how he heard she used to be a killer pastry chef. She started baking for family meal (a staff meal typically served right before dinner service). Chang realized her creativity and in short Tosi carved herself a position at Momofuku as the Pastry Chef. In short, she’s fucking amazing.

Disclaimer: I've left out quite a bit of details there in order to make it short. If you want to know more, I got a lot of my details from Chef’s Table.

Now with that being said here was my experience:  I don’t recall how I stumbled onto Milk Bar cookies, well that’s not true. Here’s how I think it went down at least. 

There was a store opening for this restaurant I worked for in L.A. They were doing some store openings in Colorado, Tennessee, Vegas, and New York. I believe someone had brought back a plethora of cookies back for the staff in L.A. I remember somehow getting one in my hand and it was a corn cookie. 

I thought to myself this could be interesting. The last time I had corn flavored anything, my grandmother had bought some corn gummiesI remember biting into it and a wave of corn hit my palette. Typically when someone claims something is corn, it’s always this weird caricature of what corn would taste like in a cartoon. A basically over exaggerated translation of the flavor.

Wait though, when I tasted Tosi’s it was corn. It has that sweet and savory taste that corn has. It was buttery and soft. My molars are usually good scouts on the perfect softness of a cookie and they were giving me two fucking thumbs up.

I also remember watching Chef’s Table and she had an episode and what really stood out to me was what someone had said...

This is not food that you can eat a lot and feel good ever. But there’s something about Christina’s baking that just overrides my off switch.

Because that’s exactly what it is!

My girlfriend and I were long overdue for a date night and we had just finished up eating Korean BBQ.

Her: Where do you want to get dessert?

Me: I low key want some shaved ice.

Her: We got shaved ice last time.

Me: What about Milk?

We were off to Milk Bar off Melrose!

We were off!

I was pretty excited about going because any time someone went to New York I'd always ask them to get them Corn Cookies and Milk. It was something I really looked forward to because it’s a cookie that’s second to none. So when I heard that they were going to open a Milk Bar in L.A. I was so pumped.

So fucking pumped I forgot about it. Guilty because of every excuse I can come up with right now.

I’m not into sweets unless it’s ice cream or shaved ice. I’m always in need of a palette cleanser something that’s easy to eat but not too heavy like cake. So for me, when it came to Milk Bar cookies, to be this drawn to a cookie was very out of character. It’s no secret Christina has this huge impact in the culinary world.

The pure excitement of just being in the space of Milk Bar alone was exciting. It’s comparable to when I visited Italy and I was able to see the Sistine Chapel for the first time. Obviously, it wasn’t that intense but the pure excitement of just walking into the establishment and taking it all in was more than half the fun.

It had to have been around 10:30p and it was still bustling with people eating outside and hanging out. It looked like we just beat the evening rush. We first took pictures in the baking class section where you can sign up for baking classes.

Everyone there was so incredibly nice. The atmosphere was perfect for getting some late night sweet treats. We got six Corn Cookies and a small cereal milk. I know what you’re thinking six corn cookies might be a bit too much, but we shared one of the six and took the rest home. We’re not out in Melrose area often so we had to stock up while the gettin’ was good.

The result of our experience here was a good one. It is a great place to take a date, if it’s not too crazy busy, or if you’re in need of satisfying that sweet tooth, this is where it’s at.

LOL so my parents and I tried out the food at @momofukunoodlebar and it was...mostly great and somewhat meh 😂 but honestly, overall great restaurant - I’ll explain why I’m so LOL about this place . If you ever come here, stick to the specials - they are actually AMAZING and the things we enjoyed the most about the meal! The seared scallop in particular was fantastic ^-^ I would go back JUST to try out all the specials . The normal menu items are great too! I’d rate them all anywhere between 4-4.5 stars so pretty much anything you order will be a solid pick 👍 except... . THE NOODLES / noodle soup 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ You would think that a place calls itself a noodle bar would have amazing noodles but I was so disappointed because literally everything else was great and the noodles were so...average 🤷🏻‍♂️ oily, odd flavor balance, my stepdad’s noodles were way too spicy...I might as well have just gotten some cup noodles or something . Don’t let that turn you off from going tho - just don’t order any noodles or noodle soups LOLLL because the whole rest of the menu was amazing 👍👍👍 10/10 (except for noodles) would recommend ahahas . Finally trying #Momofuku Noodle Bar. (1) today's dinner menu (2) braised oxtail w/ buttered rice & poached egg (3) pork ramen (4) pea shoots w/ pear, spice, etc. Verdict: better than expected.
