I shared one of your posts with a friend and we started talking about the Fortress of Solitude... She brought up that the Fortress used to be a shrine to Kryptonian culture but it mostly gets used as a way to get exposition/plot devices. Do y'all have any thoughts about it?

I would agree with your friend! It's one of the many consequences of Superman's immigrant allegory getting lost over time/generally being inconsistent. I love the idea of the Fortress of Solitude being this isolated space for Clark to connect with his lost culture, detached from Earth influence. It's an archive- the last remnants of an extinct culture protected by the last of its kind.

I think something important is this idea that an archive is never a substitute for lived experience in a culture. Yes, Clark can study Kryptonian culture and language(s?!) as much as he can, but that's not the same as growing up among Kryptonians on Krypton, where that culture is passed down to you in context of the world around it. Nuances like cultural mannerisms or jokes don't always get recorded in a historical archive.

I thoroughly disagree with takes on Superman that don't consider that diaspora distance he has from his Kryptonian culture- treating it like the Fortress' archive is more than enough to just "install acting and speaking like a Kryptonian" into Clark's character. As if that's how it is for diasporic people when we read historical archives of our culture. It adds a dimension to Clark's prevailing themes of loneliness- that he can be surrounded by the last records of Kryptonian culture and still feel so lonely.

“Your son just kicked me, Miss Luthor-Danvers.”

Kara looked over to the couch, where Lena bad stopped reading her book, which now lay propped on the dome of her stomach. She looked absolutely exhausted, with dark circles beneath her eyes, marring paler than usual skin.

The pregnancy was taking its toll on Lena, but just as difficult for Lena was the order to remain on pelvic rest, as were the Herculean caloric requirements of gestating a Kryptonian child on Earth. Lena Luthor was the type of woman who grew more fatigued from orders to lay up in bed, and Kara had to practically bat her phone out of her hand to stop her from answering emails at all hours of the night.

Kara swung out from behind the kitchen island, carrying another smoothie with a carefully selected mix of fruits, vegetables, and protein powder.

“Blegh,” Lena said, as she choked down a gulp of the stuff. Does it have to be so sweet?”

Kara didn’t answer. Lena looked haggard by her own usual standards, but to Kara, she was the most gorgeous thing she’d ever seen. Yes, she was pale, but there as a rosy glow in her cheeks and though she sighed and complained and groused, rarely had there been such joy in her eyes. One of Kara’s new favorite things was catching Lena unawares, finding her smiling at nothing and cradling protective arms around the new life coming to being within her.

After she gulped down the last of the thick, gloppy shake -which Lena had given the appetizing name of ‘nutrient slurry mark one’, she turned halfway on the couch.

“There he goes again,” said Lena, sighing.

Kara reached out with a trembling hand, resting it gently on the warm curve of Lena’s skin. She went quiet for a moment, forcing back the tears. Thinking about this overwhelmed her. She’d never dreamed she’d really have this, much less with the most beautiful and kind woman she’d ever known. A soft twitch against her palm made her grin from ear to ear.

“I’m glad you’re enjoying this. I’d like to get some sleep.”

Kara chewed at her lip for a moment.

“What if I try singing to him?”

Lena raised a sharp eyebrow.

“Alex gave me an article that says that babies can hear us while they’re in the womb.”

Lena’s head fell back against the cushions.

“Do you know any lullabies?”

Kara swallowed, hard.

“Yes.”

There was a pause, as Kara worked herself up, pulling the words from the lost days of her youth, across an ocean of stars beneath a far distant sun.

She more spoke than sang at first, until her voice grew into something soft and light, like a rare flower opening its petals to greet the sun. By the time she really began to sing, Lena was smiling, listening intently.

Kara dug deep in her memory for the words to the traditional Kryptonian lullaby, a promise from a young mother to her child lost in the wilderness, an invocation to come home safe to loving arms before the reunited in the final verses.

When Kara finished she looked up and saw that Lena was fast asleep, her hand now resting atop Kara’s as it rested on Lena’s belly. Tenderly, Kara drew her hand back and, with practiced ease, raised Lena in her arms and carried her back to the bedroom, another Kryptonian verse flowing softly from old memories, and the eventually they slept, until sunrise.

silly ramble: kara edition :)

as someone who dreads the idea of having a child or being fully responsible of one I view kara with a lot of respect and sadness.

yes she’s a caretaker and meant to clean but that’s the role she was assigned as an android. and the a big point of this story is: what do androids truly want? she took the mother role for a little (android) girl who didn’t have one but what if she didn’t want to? she was as scared and inexperienced as alice was, she just has some additional info because of her programming. I just think we should really start talking about kara as her own character rather than ‘alices mom’ . of course she was a wonderful parental figure to alice but is that all she is?

she has her own hopes and fears and I feel so bad for her and having to endure everything and taking care of alice in the process. I love the bond between the two of them it’s so sweet and beautiful but if I just wish we got more of a perspective on how terrified through everything kara probably was. I understand she had to bottle up her fear to make sure alice was safe but like. yea.

me and kara got into her narrative in goblet of fire, and how everything we’re percieving about her is from harry’s pov. like i remember reading the books and being so like.. shocked ?? when it was revealed she was engaged to bill. because it didn’t really make sense to how she was introduced, and molly sort of mirrors that confusion with her anti fleur agenda. it’s such a leap !!! harry views her as this representation of feminity but in the weak sense, disregarding her as a component almost immediately. she’s so effortlessly beautiful and lovely and girls hate her and boys objectify her so people (harry) literally forgets that she was the chosen one from her school out of everyone who entered their names into the goblet !! + contrary to the film’s depiction of beauxbatons, it isn’t actually a girls school in the books. but still, harry looks at her and all he sees is girl. like harry doesn’t even really speak to her in gof and everything we know about her so far is his observations, men fawning over her how beautiful she is and girls hating her. <- harry your sexism is showing..

and then at the burrow, harry actually gets to know fleur first hand, and i think that’s why it feels like such a leap narratively that she ends up with bill. because it doesn’t fall in line with how harry thought of her in gof.

i think fleur has a lot of rage on the inside, very fiery and a lot more competitive and more of a threat than people actually understand. she’s canonically a quidditch player and still she’s described as this frail beautiful thing that’ll surely break if you’re too rough. people don’t view her as a person even, which is also interesting because she’s quite literally part creature !!! in all honesty, she’s probably a lot like book!ginny and the two of them would probably get along really well if ginny’s could get past her own internalized misogyny

which is why i think fleur & butch post-war ginny end up having an affair behind bills back :~) 💖💖

Let's see, we've got . . . Kon, Match, Tim, Kara, Billy, Damian, Serling, Greta, Jason, Black Zero, Jazz, Dani, Tucker, Val, MANY AUs/fic-related arts, random rarepairs and wildly niche concepts, and every possible excuse to show off Kon's tits and fluster Tim, not necessarily simultaneously but not necessarily NOT simultaneously.

This is the first time I've been able to watch an episode of maws as it airs so here's my take on S2E6!

• Clark is actually being mean and sassy and I love him for it like yes bby please wake up in a better mood next time you were kidnapped not murdered

• I didn't realize in the preview clip that aired a few days ago but Kara's eyes grey out even when she says "model citizen" at the beginning of the episode!

• the look when Clark sees Lois : (( the poor boy didn't even have time to process the breakup before he got knocked out and thrown into space but also she was the first thing he thought of when Kara asked if anyone cared for the real him :((((

• Clark says ow when he fights with Kara over the Polaroid! It's so natural that it took me a second to realize that he probably doesn't normally feel pain from playful roughhousing??

• the fact that Clark immediately clocks Kara the way Jimmy clocked him and Lois. The little shimmer in his eye when he asks if she likes him

• "what, no, what? I don't even know what that means. Stop being all weird with your stupid earth brain" this whole sequence makes me REALLY REALLY look forward to a post-brainiac maws where Clark and Kara can just be cousins in metropolis together (which I fully believe the maws crew will make happen)

• Cousin snowball fight I cryyy

• For a second I almost believed we were actually going to see space traveling and new planets but makes sense

• ok it's been lowkey before this episode but is Clark actually kryptonian super saiyan I don't know the lore

• Kara actually did genocide while brainwashed oh no

• I'm sorry I'm sorry WHAT Jimmy and Lois both 1. Found MM and the brain from the OTHER DIMENSION they traveled to and 2. WENT INTO SPACE TO FIND CLARK my joy is unending I love this show

• Clark is actually going to be used as a weapon nooo poor boy just wants to help I can't handle a world where the maws version of Clark Kent is a murderer :((((

Final thoughts, love! The maws crew is already doing such a good job of making Clark and Kara feel like cousins and I'm so happy she's in the show even though I was honestly hesitant about it at first. The next episode is called Olsen's eleven and once again I am. My joy is immeasurable. I love this show. I love that we get to experience it every week instead of all at once because now I get to comb through all the small animation details while I waitt!!! I'm just sad there were no phones in this episode because HOW will I know if it's still Monday may 9th now???

So, I now got back into Detroit: Become Human, and I have to say, I've honestly missed Connor and his beautiful face that reminds me of the learning puppy.

I also just found out that people make stories about the game and about my dude. I mean, everyone and anyone make up stories on paper and scenarios in their heads about anything. I can't really say I'm surprised about it.

What I am surprised is how no one, well, as far as I've read, has not made a story about reader being an android that was made to be specifically paired with Connor. I'd honestly very much like to read something like that.

Or should I make something like it? I do feel like writing, even though I'm working about 4 days out of the week, I'll be able to have enough time to come up with some stuff. Should be fun writing about a character with an already-made love interest.

Me, reading Chris Kent’s stories to help me with my research for a project: I love this guy. Why won’t DC bring the actual Chris back? …Well crap all of this arc might be tricky to work with, but it should be fine.

Me, learning about there being others besides Nightwing and Flamebird from their myths: Ok, this might help with the name issues.

I played Detroit Become Human with my mom who’s never really touched a video game… very fun experience, i totally recommend

some takeaways:

We got the peaceful ending + deviant Connor + Kara and crew makes it to Canada

Said the camera movement was going to give her a headache

she thought it would make a good movie

When we opened Alice’s box of drawings, she thought Todd killed the wife

Found Carl a little weird at first for having a Black android but then felt bad cause she thought she killed Leo

After meeting everyone at Jericho, asked if it was a cult

She absolutely hated North. Felt she was annoying cause she always yelled at Markus and wanted him to kill everyone

The beginning of Pirates Cove was fun:

“I wish Luther would do something, why am I going out to fix the car…Why are we leaving the car? Alice is gonna get sick. Watch, now Kara’s gonna say something ridiculous-

We need to find shelter! We have to get out of the cold!

See?”

Wasn’t a fan of the Alice Twist. She thought that meant everything we did was a waste a time. Said it was odd since Alice didn’t act like an android or have an LED. She paused the game and googled it to see if anyone else felt the same

During the rambling about Cole and Hanks stance on androids in the Connor vs Sixty scene “Is Connor supposed to be Hank’s son now? It’s good he’s able to move on from something like that but Connor’s like a grown man, I think it’s better if they’re just work friends.“

When presented the choices in Markus’ demonstration she said “Why are we singing on the battlefield? They’re gonna kill him. That’s the worst option” the song reminded her of wade in the water. Wasn’t a fan of singing to beat the game but she was glad everyone lived and the androids were free. Thought they had very nice voices

Her favorite character was Markus cause he wanted what was best for everyone and made a good leader. Connor was cool and Kara was kinda repetitive

Said it was like they tried to make a futuristic dystopian world, but then decided to recreate the civil rights movement. That it was weird sometimes but overall an interesting concept.

Anytime she sees any media about AI or robots she’ll say it’s “Just like Detroit!” so… I think she liked it 😁
