Thoughts on the Netflix Witcher:

Not many people are tossing a coin to their Witcher, are they? Geralt still has to buy his own drinks, it seems.

Jaskier’s lyrics need, er, work, but Joey Batey has a lovely voice.

Love the wardrobe design, Yen’s in particular. It’s distinctive, not always “pretty” in that it sometimes feels like medieval experimental haute couture, and combines sexuality with hard lines. It feels very her.

I love Freya Allan’s Ciri. Allan’s a really good actress, in my opinion, with a really hard arc to carry, and also apparently show!Ciri has the same effect as games!Ciri - that of me turning into Geralt and muttering “must protect” a lot and wanting to stab anyone who tries to hurt her. Her eyes are very cool.

I think it's interesting that in the books, Yen is clearly based off Polish archetypes and the wild raven curls are part of that; in both the games and the show, it's played down. (Not least because I've seen her in other stuff and Chalotra naturally has pretty poker-straight hair, so curling that for any length of time without the curls falling out, even with a ton of product, would be a pain.)

My one issue is that I still think she looks a bit young and I would've been perfectly happy to chuck out the whole "sorceresses enchant themselves to look early twenties forever" thing, but actually... I also kind of really like the "soft-faced, soft-voiced enchantress is actually hard as nails" idea. It lets her presence speak for itself, which Chalotra does very well, and means people tend to underestimate Yen, which is also handy. I mean... I will always be frustrated by “somehow, conveniently, they look like a 22-year-old actress and a 35-or-so leading man”, but Chalotra’s work itself is good. It's different from the Yen in my head, but I like her performance and interpretation.

I like Triss, and I like seeing her here. I hope they’ll go more into their friendship. It’s been rocky at times, but I found it quite annoying how the games treated all that, as opposed to the books. This is one of those things where I’m really glad it’s adapting the books in particular.

Critical stuff, written in December, with warnings for discussions of consent and stuff:

The Last Wish is the short story where Geralt and Yen meet, with the capture of the djinn. I read it once, coming up for four years ago? now, so I'm really muzzy on memories and it might well have been like that originally. Now, knowing Sapkowski, who does pull this shit, it probably was. (I love his female characters as characters. It’s just that often, his gender worldbuilding bothers me. The two shouldn’t be different, but they often are.)

All right, so the sexual dynamics going on are... uncomfortable, and perhaps you get a bit inured to it in the books because there's just so much uncomfortable stuff, but it stands out a bit more starkly in the show, which has been better for it. (I do not like rapey canons. At all. I have no idea how I got into the Witcher; really liking the female mains and liking Slavic mythology? And the fact that the games and show were pretty good with how they treated it as part of someone's story rather than a "haha, look, so titillating" on-screen scene? And certainly, Calanthe and her people killing themselves to avoid enslavement, torture and rape is depressingly historically accurate. Anyway.)

Things I'm bothered by:

The implication that the orgy is basically sex pollen/a possible humiliation tactic, rather than her manouvering her way into circles with everyone's embarrassing secret being "we like to willingly fuck the whole village," which would also have been political humiliation. I mean, you can make a point that she's had a background of being sexually and romantically manipulated most of her adult life - look at the Istredd thing, for a start, with the rectors - and is just shrug about it all, but. It's different from Stregobor's illusion because these are real people. They all look like they've just come out of a trance and scrabble panickedly for clothes and their reputations, they look like didn't know quite where they were, and spells for that kind of thing had been established an ep or two earlier in the series.

So the first time Geralt and Yen meet, we've got non-con sex played for laughs, or at least played off as "yeah, she does that, don't worry about it" (which is fed into by Geralt's later enchantment, which I actually don't mind, humiliating him and then sending him to hang because he's in the way is somehow less objectionable to me? Maybe because i just hate non-con storylines that much, or maybe because it's less of a direct attack). And then when they meet, you've got: strong-arming him into a bath (sure, he says yes and I guess you can say he figured there'd be sex, but he seems surprised about it all), getting naked in front of him when he's already in a position where it'd be difficult/awkward to leave, the first kiss which has a pretext but was very specifically a kiss and which again, he's kind of too taken-aback/assessing to reciprocate... I mean, if all this sounds kind of OK, swap the genders; heck, even watching it at the time, some of it was pinging me as "hey, this sounds too much like rl things that have happened".

Now, one can say, "Well, he stuck around, didn't he?" - hmm, OK, but you've got the trickier things of magical intimidation at play (even before the enchantment, he knows he's dealing with a powerful sorceress who fucks with people's heads) and just "eh, I guess I'll go with the flow" that can kind of characterise Geralt. And even Witchers freeze. And you can say, "Well, she could probably tell he was attracted to her, with magical mojo if not just through observation." Aye, but dude was kinda busy and on-duty and clearly mistrustful of her, so he would probably never have acted on it - and didn't, because of all those factors. The later thank-god-we're-alive/angry sex when they actually get it together? Totally fine with that, that seems about par for the course with those two.

I also feel like the fact that Geralt, who I fondly say is the biggest horndog in Temeria a lot of the time and will rarely turn down a bit of afternoon delight, doesn't make a move and stays questioning her, albeit amusedly, says a lot about where their relationship is at that point and the fact he's still trying to figure her out. (Not that that implies he's not interested; quite the opposite, mistrustful boffing is kind of a thing he does at times, and heck, look at Renfri.) And on Yen's part, it's definitely more of a power play than needing to save bathwater (I mean, she's pretty rich).

Now, as said, the original story was prob at least a bit like this, because Sapkowski *eyeroll*, but considering the amount they changed (Istredd's entire backstory! A whole bunch of Yen’s! Yennefer's transformation! A bunch of other things), they could've probably adjusted this and/or at least put a different lens on it in the script. It's also frustrating because a lot of people I've seen make this argument are using it for "Yen is such a bitch, Geralt deserves better, I hate her." I'm not interested in char-bashing. No, I love games!Yen (one of my favourite characters in... anything) and what of books!Yen I've read, and I really enjoy Chalotra's version... aside from these scenes.

And aye, one can say that Geralt/Yen is about two people who've been shaped by a truly awful world learning to be better and of course they have their flaws (uh, completely ignoring consent is a pretty darn large one), but it's definitely played as intriguing/romantic/casual mischief.

Update, as of January, when I went back to it:

I literally love every single other scene with her. Hmm. Also, I’ve spoken to a couple of people about this, and neither one of them had it ping to them as coercion. Perhaps I’m just overthinking things or not being good at romance storylines again. Just... not sure, I guess. Nothing else bothered me. Is this my books knowledge being wonky? Am I being daft? If anyone else has thoughts, I’d be glad to hear them.

LONDON — Claudio Belotti knows he cut the denim that became the jeans Meghan Markle wore on one of her first outings as the fiancee of Britain’s Prince Harry.

That’s because he cuts all of the fabric for Hiut Denim Co., a 7-year-old company that makes jeans in Cardigan, Wales. Belotti is a craftsman with 50 years of experience that gives his work a personal touch — something that’s not quite couture but not exactly mass-produced either.

“There’s a story behind each one,” Belotti said. “You’re paying for the skill.”

Customer demand for something unique is helping small companies like Hiut buck the globalization trend and set up shop in developed countries that had long seen such work disappear. While international brands like H&M and Zara still dominate the clothing market, small manufacturers are finding a niche by using technology and skill to bring down costs and targeting well-heeled customers who are willing to pay a little more for clothes that aren’t churned out by the thousands half a world away.

Profits at smaller national clothing firms grew 2 per cent over the last five years, compared with a 25 per cent decline at the top 700 traditional multinationals, according to research by Kantar Consulting.

Their success comes from promoting their small size and individuality, said Jaideep Prabhu, a professor of enterprise at Cambridge University’s Judge Business School.

“It’s a different kind of manufacturing,” he said. “They are not the Satanic mills. These are very cool little boutiques.”

Hiut, which makes nothing but jeans, employs 16 people in Cardigan and makes 160 pairs a week. Women’s styles range from 145 pounds ($192) to 185 pounds ($244), men’s go for 150 pounds to 235 pounds. Each is signed by the person who sewed it, known in the company as a “Grand Master.” By contrast, Primark says it sources products from 1,071 factories in 31 countries and keeps costs down by “buying in vast quantities.” The most expensive pair of jeans on the company’s website sells for 20 pounds.

Many of these small manufacturers also try to stand out by embracing social issues, from reducing waste to paying a living wage.

Hiut, for example, highlights its efforts to put people back to work in a small town that was devastated when a factory that employed 400 people and made 35,000 pairs of jeans a week shut down. Underscoring the years of craftsmanship that go into each pair of jeans, the company offers “free repairs for life.”

This kind of customer service helps form a “personal relationship” between a brand and the shopper that is valuable, says Anusha Couttigane of Kantar Consulting.

Customers notice. Laura Lewis-Davies, a museum worker who from Wales, says she wants to support independent businesses when she can and bought a pair of Hiut jeans after seeing a story about Markle wearing the brand.

“Well-crafted things bring more joy,” she said. “I’d rather buy fewer things but know they’re good quality (and) made by people who are working in good conditions for a fair salary.”

The rise of small clothing makers reflects a broader shift in consumer preferences away from big brands — as evident, say, in the boom in craft beers. In fashion, technology is fueling the trend.

The internet provides a cheap way to reach customers, while off-the-shelf artificial intelligence programs allow companies to accurately forecast demand and order materials so they can make small batches and avoid unwanted stock. That makes it possible to produce clothes that are more customized.

“Data is the backbone for this and the trigger,” said Achim Berg, a senior partner at McKinsey & Co. in Frankfurt who advises fashion and luxury goods companies. “It’s not custom-made, but it gives the consumer the opportunity to be more individual.”

A survey of 500 companies by McKinsey and The Business of Fashion, an influential industry news website, identified personalization as this year’s No. 1 trend. Consumers are willing to hand over personal information to get more customized products and services, according to a 2016 survey by Salesforce.com, which provides online sales and marketing tools for businesses.

Established brands have recognized the trend and offering to customize products, too. Adidas, for example, offers the chance to mix and match colours and materials on things like the sole and laces on some of its shoes.

But making clothes on a smaller scale has also gained a moral tinge after scandals about sweatshops, child labour and unsafe working practices hit global brands in recent years. The 2013 collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh, which killed 1,100 and injured 2,500 others, highlighted the grim conditions in factories that export to the United States and Europe.

Jenny Holloway, who employs 100 people at Fashion Enter in London, said she’s not interested in making as many garments as possible and selling them as fast as she can.

“I’d like to say we’ve done a massive business plan and we refer to it. We don’t,” Holloway said. “We sit down and have a cup of tea and we have a chat and we evaluate how things sit with us. How does that client fit our ethics? … It isn’t about money and making that big buck. It’s about sustainability.”

Prabhu sees this as part of a bigger shift away from the model of outsourcing production to low-cost countries like China. “You’re trying to constantly keep up with your customers. Your competitive advantage is to give them something closer to their needs.”

Hiut Denim is an example of this backlash.

The company is based in a town of some 4,000 people where 10 per cent of the population once made jeans. Then, a decade ago, the factory shut down as the owners moved production to Morocco and later to China.

When David and Clare Hieatt decided to start making jeans again, they were determined to take advantage of the years of professional experience going to waste. They hoped that would give their products a “story” to market.

Markle’s decision to wear Hiut jeans in Wales boosted that effort. The company now has a waiting list of three months.

“For the town it’s been incredible because it gives people a confidence to go, ’Wow. This town makes a world-class product,”’ David Hieatt said. “We lost our mojo when we lost 400 jobs, but now we’re getting it back. That’s a very cool story.”

PARIS — Paris — the City of Light, lovelocks and the Seine River— was the backdrop Tuesday in Chanel’s sublime couture collection that showed designer Karl Lagerfeld is still at the top of his game at 84.

Penelope Cruz, Pharrell Williams and Lily Allen applauded after the cinematic runway display in which the French fashion house painstaking recreated a Parisian cityscape — all inside the nave of the Grand Palais.

No detail was spared: from the padlocks on the famed Pont des Arts bridge to the surrounding riverside booksellers (with Chanel-themed literature), to thick city stones and the majestic domed French Academy.

But this fall-winter season, couture was the true star of the show. Here are some highlights from Tuesday’s collections.

CHANEL’S PARISIAN HEIGHTS Mirroring the nostalgic Parisian decor, Chanel’s 67 accomplished looks came in the colors of the city.

Light gray evoked zinc rooftops, almond green for historic building roofs, anthracite for roads and gold and silver — so said the program — for “reflections of the moon in the rippling Seine.”

Pinks and mauves reflected sunrise; black and deep navy, the night. White and beige captured the French capital’s annoyingly changeable weather.

The myriad interlocking crystal embroideries, meanwhile, were said to mirror cobblestones and netted tulle, embroidered with gold, evoked lovers’ padlocks on the Pont des Arts (that were famously banned by Paris authorities).

These poetical explanations were nice but unnecessary for a collection that didn’t need any gimmicks to impress. Lagerfeld raised the bar this season — and it was the inspired sleeve silhouette that did it.

Sleeves flapped and unfurled in a unique bell shape achieved thanks to an open zipper up the arm. It possessed a fresh sporty-meets-regal air.

The unfurling shape moved down the body into long split skirts with open panels at the sides, and another skirt underneath. Folded cuff boots furthered this unfurling dynamic, as the cuff opened out of the shoe stylishly — in black, white, gray or embroidered sequins. ___

LILY ALLEN ON FEMALE EMPOWERMENT British singer Lily Allen, who called Chanel’s couture “incredible” and sported new platinum tresses, also spoke about female empowerment to The Associated Press amid the Time’s Up and #MeToo movements.

The feminist 33-year-old said she has “impostor syndrome” regarding her fame and still finds it “hard to accept” being successful as a woman. She added: “maybe it’s a societal thing, or maybe it’s something we internalize from a young age.”

Allen also expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of online pro-women campaigns.

“There’s ‘Instagram empowerment’ and it’s not really very real … The more we become so focused on the visual aspect of women, we lose the value of everything else … it can’t be a hashtag thing,” she said. “I’d like to see more implementation of change and policy at government level.” ___

ALEXIS MABILLE’S ARTISTRY It was a mixed couture bag for Alexis Mabille.

The French designer stumbled at the start of his collection with several sheer lace looks that lacked originality. But later into the 47-piece display inside the chic Salle Pleyel concert hall he really found his mojo.

Off-kilter floor-length trapeze gowns with stripes were followed by dresses that opened up or fanned out dramatically at the chest — the focal point of his best designs.

A series of tiered tulle gowns with extreme-cinched waists — one in dark vanilla and another where colors subtly blended from azure-white to butter — were the work of a true artist.

What I am passionate about

Now here is a something that I honestly have been wanting to talk about. Well for starters I am a wrestling fan, I have been a fan since I was 10 years old. There were times where I was like why do I even watch this and should I stop watching this. That hasn’t happened to me yet, yes I know how it works and I know what the in and outs are, I have enjoyed and you better give me a reason one day on to stop watching it.

So for me it all started on an episode of WWE Monday Night Raw on April 28, 2008 my dad said to me “you wanna go to this wrestling show in New Jersey with my friend and his son” and I was like “yeah why not.” At first I had no idea what was even going on, I was just a 10 year old kid clueless trying to figure it out what was even happening. Then after the that night it hit me and I enjoyed it, that was the most fun I had at that young of an age, I thought it was the coolest thing in the world at that time. It had stuck with me ever since, me and my dad still say this on how “imagine if we never went to that Monday Night Raw that day with my friend.”

Then it all clicked after that, I got my friends involved in it and they started liking it too. Of course we were all young kids at that time and I can’t believe that was a big part of our friendships. It was apart of my life and now it also was with my friends. I do not regret anything revolving around that. I went to a bunch of WWE live event shows in the summer of 2008 at Madison Square Garden, that night was literally so enjoyable I saw my first steel cage match and I liked it as well. Another show I went to was a WWE Friday Night Smackdown on January 2, 2009. You could not believe how excited I was, I was dressed up as one of my favorite wrestlers his name was Jeff Hardy and I thought I was the coolest kid ever. Being apart of something like that was crazy I still have the camera from that night in my room somewhere on how happy I was.

I will take you back to arguably the best days of my life April 7, 2013. So WWE biggest promotional show is known as WrestleMania, starting back in 1985 at Madison Square Garden. Every year it gets bigger and better. According to Forbes, WWE’s WrestleMania is in the top 10 of most valuable sporting events. So back to 2013, WrestleMania 29 at MetLife Stadium was something I have never witnessed before. A sea of 80,676 people united as one as we watched amazing performers take it to “The Grandest Stage Of Them All.” Names like The Undertaker, John Cena, Triple H, CM Punk, Brock Lesnar, The Rock and more. I have never been apart of something like that then never before. So many spectacular matches and so many big memorable moments that’ll never forget.

As I witnessed three huge main events all in a row, starting The Undertaker vs. CM Punk. Going into that match was The Undertaker’s 20-0 WrestleMania Undefeated Streak was on the line. With a long feud revolving around how The Undertaker’s former manager Paul Bearer died and all through that build up was that CM Punk was mocking The Undertaker by hitting him with his urn that Paul Bearer had his “powers” in and also mocking Paul Bearer’s death. CM Punk said that “he was the 1 in 20-1.” Which is him saying that he will end The Streak. That was match of the night in my opinion without any doubt which was won by The Undertaker to extend his WrestleMania Undefeated Streak to 21-0. Next was a match that was between Triple H and Brock Lesnar. This was the second encountering between the two, this feud would start to build up when Brock Lesnar attacked Triple H’s father-in-law, the CEO of WWE Vince McMahon and then eventually Triple H’s friends. Eventually the match would be announced as a No Holds Barred match with a stipulation added after Triple H signed the contract. Which would be known that Triple H’s wrestling career was on the line. A big waste of match in my opinion there was no point to have a second match between the two, but Triple H would win the match with hitting his finisher “The Pedigree” onto steel steps.

WrestleMania has had some of the biggest moments and names perform on that stage many times. Big time main events like at WrestleMania I with Hulk Hogan and Mr. T vs. “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff. Or like at WrestleMania III whereas they called it “the irresistible force meets the immovable object.” As Hulk Hogan took on Andre the Giant for the WWF Championship in front of 93, 173 people. Hogan picked Andre upped and body slammed him and the place went insane. WrestleMania VI in Toronto, Canada two of the biggest names in the company at that time Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior went one on one for in a Winner Take All Match. How bout WrestleMania XI in Anaheim, California where it was the first Iron Man Match between Bret “Hitman” Hart and Shawn Michaels for the WWF Championship. Shawn Michaels would be the winner as the announcer would say ‘the boyhood dream has come true for Shawn Michaels.” Or even maybe two years later in Boston, Massachusetts for WrestleMania XIV between Shawn Michaels and Stone Cold Steve Austin for the WWF Championship. Or even at WrestleMania X8 where we saw the passing of the torch was in full force between The Rock and Hulk Hogan. Where that brought us to a Once in a Lifetime match between John Cena and The Rock at WrestleMania XXVIII and putting that in the rematch of the century at WrestleMania 29. Or how we saw the ending of The Undertaker’s Undefeated Streak at WrestleMania XXX against Brock Lesnar. Even in that same show where we saw Daniel Bryan completed “The Underdog Story” where he won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. What about WrestleMania 31 at Levi’s Stadium we saw big moment in a dream match 15 years in the making since WWE bought WCW in 2001. As Triple H took on WCW’s franchise “The Icon” Sting. The Undertaker made his return to WWE after losing his undefeated streak a year ago with a young Bray Wyatt where he proclaimed himself as “The New Face of Fear.” Later in the night for WrestleMania 31, the Money in the Bank winner Seth Rollins interrupted the main event making it a triple threat match between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship calling it “The Heist of the Century” as Seth Rollins stole the title. Whereas the latest name to perform on that stage was the returning “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey she made her WWE in-ring debut at WrestleMania 34 and it did not disappoint.

Now time to go into something that is annoying, how they say those wrestlers aren’t real athletes well I hate to break it to you but they are. I’ll give you a history lesson if that involves them playing a sport at the collegiate level or the professional level, olympic games, or powerlifting. I will even list them for you on how many of those wrestlers did that before going to the WWE.

As you see from this their have been many wrestlers who are given athletes. The have every right to be named athletes given the fact that they wrestle every single day of the year with no breaks is actually incredible I really do not know how there bodies do it. They are such inspiring people and are like superheroes to young kids. This is truly something that I love with passion every single day.

WWE also does a lot of events in a year to year basis. WWE now has a streaming platform which will give you all WWE content on any platform on phones, tables, smart tv’s, gaming consoles and more. This is called WWE Network for paid subscribers it’s $9.99 USD, but they also give a 30-day free trial as well for new subscribers. An idea that was originally produced in 2012 but never was fully released until 2014. In 2014, WWE had their first live broadcast on the show, which was WrestleMania XXX, since then they have produced 88 live events with 17 more events confirmed. They have had multiple events all around the United States, and even in different countries like Canada, England, and just recently in Saudi Arabia. Currently in 2018, we have gone through 7 events. January’s show had (WWE NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia) and (Royal Rumble), February’s show had (Elimination Chamber), March’s show had (Fastlane), in April they had three events (WWE NXT TakeOver: New Orleans), (WrestleMania 34) and (The Greatest Royal Rumble). All great action between the 4 months, all big matches and big events.

With the launch of WWE Network they will hopefully do a global expansion to find talent in different countries outside of North America. Personally I am very excited about because they aren't in this country and I would like to see what they got as a wrestler or as WWE calls them “Sports Entertainers.” Last week in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia WWE hosted tryouts to find talent from that country, they ended up with four guys and they were announced on at the event (The Greatest Royal Rumble) that event was a success for the country that WWE and Saudi Arabia will be making another appearance in November. Last year WWE did a tournament in the United Kingdom to crown the first ever WWE United Kingdom Champion. They had some money issues with the project before but is now doing a two-day event in June. As members of WWE’s NXT roster with WWE UK roster and other United Kingdom wrestlers will be in England for the event. By boosting this expansion they can literally make this a global company.

This has been apart of my life for so long and I honestly don’t ever see this passion for wrestling end ever. A lot of countries take pro wrestling as an actual sport. Japan has a lot of wrestling in their country and they take it serious and very different. I have no regrets and I love it. A lot of people say to me “you know its fake right” and I'm like yeah “but you think tv shows and movies are real” I don't like the negativity from it at all. So I'm very passionate about it and if someone had a problem with it, then thats their fault because they are missing out on some great to watch.
