Can you explain to me why we have to have trans in a story about vikings? Is it for the readers to self-insert? But that doesn't make any sense to me. Isn't being trans a horrible thing? Being stuck in the wrong body sounds nightmarish, so why wouldn't you just pick the gender you identify with? This feels less like being trans, and more like a pathology. These are genuine concerns/questions, I'm not trying to start a fight or anything. It just feels really out of place.

I included the option of being trans in this game because I wanted to explore how a transgender person might have lived and felt in an early medieval setting. Part of the decision came from people asking for it, but another part was my own interest in understanding how someone in that time would have navigated those emotions.

And it's not like I'm forcing you to make your main character trans. You have the choice to ignore that and continue as a cis character, where being transgender won't even be mentioned since I don't have any other characters that are.

I'm a writer and I love to study characters through the words I jot down, doesn't matter if they're trans, gay, straight, sadistic, angelic, toxic, healthy, etc.

As for the idea that reading about being trapped in the wrong body would feel nightmarish, I would argue against it. Writers don’t shy away from exploring abuse simply because it’s horrific. And I'm sure readers don't just want to read stories where everything is butterflies and rainbows. Realism in literature is valid because its a reflection of our world.

Some books do escape that reality, while others confront it head-on. This is one of those books that chooses to confront it. Those who don't want to read about the realities they went through, have the choice to do as you say and pick the gender they identify with. But those few who want to see my (hopefully true and well-written) representation of being trans, have the choice as well.

Also, it's not as though I'm going to portray the MC's experience of being transgender through a modern lens—this will be deeply rooted in the context of the time.

Me: narratively speaking it doesn’t make sense for the dragon hunters, outcasts or berserkers to be comprised entirely of men.

Berk clearly has women warriors and doesn’t discriminate or delegate them to safer roles such as home defence. Women seem to be encouraged to be warriors and be muscly. There is a lot of interesting backstory to delve into with this, either drawing inspiration from the irl female vikings, or the darker implications of a war torn Berk desperate for all the warriors it could get its hands on regardless of birth rates (a man can have a hundred children a year, but a woman is limited to 1).

There are other tribes who blatantly follow these same practices, in some cases to higher extremes than berk. The Wingmaidens value female warriors above males as they are unable to manage the razorwhip population due to the animals gender bias. The defenders of the wing have equal male:female ratios in their village and seem to have a mandatory military service for all citizens, including women as all are in armour. Not to mention that they have a queen rather than the stereotypical chief, possibly mimicking the dragon kingdom that they worship.

Dagur doesn’t take offence to heather being a warrior, and there seems to be warrior women on berserker island, but the armada is shockingly made up entirely of men. The outcasts and dragon hunters take it a step further and have no women visible at any point. Compared to berk, the wingmaidens and the defenders of the wing, this is a massive discrepancy.

The obvious answer is that the creators didn’t have the budget for multiple character models, and so they prioritised the male models to fit the audience expectations. The defenders of the wing only have 1:1 gender ratios because their models are reused hiccup and heather models. The wingmaidens are the only culture with consistent multiple female models because it came later in the series, when the creators realised they had an extreme male heavy cast.

This is incredibly gross and should be talked about more as most modern (5 years old is still modern) cartoons have a male heavy focus in both characters and viewerbase despite a great deal of people claiming that women are fairly represented in media, and that feminism is no longer needed.

I love that in this point in time, we have enough proof that there's almost no chance that someone's Don't Starve OC wouldn't fit into Don't Starve

You worry that the idea for your character is a bit too complicated? - We already have the "actress who thinks she is in a play so she acts like a viking" and "a spider creature guy, but it's actually just a small boy who was eaten by a spider, so they fused"! So you're most likely good!

You worry that the name you want to give them might not work, because it doesn't start with "W"? - No problem at all! There are canon characters in Constant whose first name does not start with "W"! And I don't mean Charlie or Abigail here - I mean Robert(Wagstaf) and Maybelle(Wheeler). As long as you make their last name start with "W", you're good!

You worry that perks you want to give your oc are too disconnected from each other and don't really fit a concept of your character? - Walter exists!

Heck, even if you want to make your oc come from modern times instead of circa 1920, I'm pretty sure it would be possible to, thanks to the fact Wanda exists, so time travel shenanigans are 100% possible there.

And knowing that Webber appears in cult of a lamb now, I'm pretty sure that your oc would work for dst, even if it came from different fandom(like fnaf or undertale)

What I'm trying to say is... don't worry too much when creating Don't Starve OCs. Just have fun. Worst case scenario you’ll just adjust stuff later

You wanna know who handled dead sinners from different eras better than Hazbin Hotel?

Ghosts. (The US version lol)

Those in the back are all different people who died and ended up in an eternal purgatory of sorts; each of them having died in a different era.

You want to know WHY I say they handle the characters better than whatever Vivziepop is doing?

Because they KEEP ASPECTS FROM THEIR ERAS.

The woman in the blue dress (Hetty) was a robber baron who died in the 1800s.

The black woman (Alberta) was a jazz singer who was allegedly murdered from the 1920s.

The guy with an arrow in his neck (Pete) was a boy scout troop leader who died in 1985.

The fancily dressed man (Issac) was a captain in the army who died during the Revolutionary War.

The guy in the suit (Trevor) was a stockbroker who died during the late 1990s.

The woman in the glasses (Flower) was a hippie and a member of the counter-culture revolution who died in the 1960s.

The Native American (Sasappis/goes by Sas) was basically from a tribe who died in the 1500s.

And lastly, the viking (Thorfinn) was a guy who ended up dying in the early 1000s.

You can TELL which era each of these characters are from solely from how they are dressed along with how they speak, though given how long they have been stuck in purgatory in the same location the ones who died earlier LEARN about modern things from the ones who died more later than they did.

They all didn't just die and suddenly start cursing and talking about sex and drugs (an exception to Hetty because she has confirmed herself to use cocaine while Trevor talks about sex frequently and died due to a drug overdose. But he mainly talks about sex because he was a frat/playboy in life, so it makes sense he hadn't matured before his death.) along with suddenly knowing modern lingo from eras they didn't even live long enough to BE in.

This show only confirms that it's not that hard to have different characters from different eras in one room interacting as friends, AND that sex and such isn't needed all the time to make your show 'good'.

Wow, I never watched that show, but yeah! It sounds like they handle dead sinners MUCH better than Hazbin Hotel, I mean, is it really that difficult to just do some research? Viv seriously couldn't of like, searched some fashion trends or like slang from that time period? Seriously how hard would that be?

Retellings is one thing, there's also this obsession with making the Greek Gods and Heroes as other races beside Greek. Like why the need to reimagined this Gods/Heroes like you? Why they need to have body shape/hairs/colour like you? Don't you know that these are cultural figures from the country it hail from?

Like never in my life I want to see Aphrodite looking like me or my people, I have my OWN mythology! If I want a mythology figure that show my culture and society, I just turn to my folktales. Why did the Greek mythos suddenly bear the burden to represent every single person/nation on earth?

You wanna claim that bc Greek mythology is mainstream? I think there's more nuances to it, bc no one in this world know my culture lore except the people from my own country but it doesn't stop us from appreciating our mythos and figures. And if we want to look at our own representation, we just look at our own culture. It's mind-blowing to me that these people can't do the same, and they feel the need to project their identity on another culture instead of embracing theirs.

Honestly I am not sure how is that even considered "empowering" or "representation" to swap existing characters with known background like this! Honestly if someone race swapped the amazing African Orishas to look like Greeks because "we need representations of Greeks in media" I would be insulted. I would be like "why? Ain't greek mythology important enough to create so that you need to insert my myths to African pantheon?"

And I have been called a racist for saying that! As well as other people who say the same as me too 🙄 like if you claim that "whitewashing" is so evil and erasing culture then how is it okay to do the opposite to Greeks (or even depict them as the other end of the spectrum like as if they are Norse vikings or something lol). And usually they do not use the excuse of "universality" or "mainstream" their favorite excuse is:

"There were black people in Greece and they deserve to be represented"

In other words they claim they are right and that anyone who disagrees is a bigot and a racist (the usual formula that is) and so they indeed hire literally any other kind of actors but Greeks or at least Italian and Balkan descend and they do not even make an effort to cast someone that remotely looks like the part sometimes (for example they casted The Rock to play Heracles in 2015. But at least they made an effort with makeup and the lighting of the film to make him remotely look like the part and the casting didn't appear bad or out of place to the degree it is nowadays)

So for once even if that were true (and so far we do not have plenty of archeological evidence for it) they were still considered foreigners and they were not always mingling with society. Where? Athens? Where foreigners even from other GREEK cities were not allowed to live within the walls? Sparta? That didn't allow anyone in their closed society? And we have no clue what was going on in Mycenaean world. But we know ancient myths were including people that Greeks were familiar with.

But do you still wanna go with your little hypothesis that let's say an Egyptian and a Greek had a kid that is mixed? Go ahead and create an original character with an original story. Why race swap an existing one with known story. I swear once I saw someone race swap Antigone. ANTIGONE! The woman was as inbred as she couldn't be more.

Another excuse they use is the modern day Greeks that are born out of immigrants. Are they less of Greeks than I am because they are of different ethnicity? Absolutely not. They are as Greek as I am nationally. They are born in Greece educated in Greece live in Greece. Are they ethnically Greek? No. There is a difference there. And Greeks existed in Africa. We find cities of Greeks in north Africa all the time. Even Odysseus proves this. Lotus Eaters were probably Tynisian. We have Memnon the king of Ethiopia who has an entire poem dedicated to his people in Epic Cycle called "Aithiopis". Why isn't anyone properly representing those? Why do they feel the need to race swap existing characters to achieve that? And I couldn't have said it better Anon! Suddenly greek mythology becomes responsible to represent every nation on earth...instead of focusing at the amazing nations and their stories or myths.

I'm writing more of my Twst fanfic and I'm certain I wanna have a romantic interest for my HTTYD!MC. Recap of my character; They're just a female version of Hiccup as his younger sister who's another Dragon Tamer and second in line to be chief. She's a Viking gets transported to a new world and forced to attend Night Raven with no idea about modern customs lol.

So each character I've fallen for chosen do have something in common with her to build into a relationship but I'm GENIUNELY CONFLICTED. So I'm leaving the choice to you guys with reasons why each of them can bond lol.
