So as something of a follow-up to this post I did on Psychonauts, I thought I’d try and think of other examples of games with a notably casual and relaxed early-game instead of tossing both protagonist and player directly into some intense main plot. Particularly if there are ways of essentially ‘putting off’ the main story to the point that a significant percentage of your playthrough of the game takes place in this more casual, relaxed state.
Now as someone brought up in the tags of the Psychonauts post, yes Kingdom Hearts 2 has a great example of this concept with Roxas’s prologue. Sure, it may not be very long compared to the rest of the game and there is no reasonable way to extend it (indeed, that inevitability is very much part of the POINT of Roxas’s story in KH2), but at the same time the last few days of ‘summer vacation’ for Roxas so perfectly capture and present this chill and relaxed atmosphere that really does set KH2 apart from so many other games. Not to mention being probably THE main reason Roxas ended up being as beloved as he is by the fandom.
For another, perhaps unexpected example, I’d actually put Cyberpunk 2077 on this list. Specifically the pre-heist section of the First Act. Like it might be easy to miss if you just go straight to the meeting with Evelyn and the deal with Maelstrom, but after the meeting with Dexter, you’re given free reign of the Watson district along with a few side quests you can do. Sure it’s not like how Psychonauts opens up basically three-quarters of the map after the first level as you’re still stuck to one district with a number of higher level unlockables unavailable. But I think it’s still a bit significant, particularly as you can complete either of the main quests at your leisure and even put off the heist itself until you’re ready.
Which I think in turn gives the first act a more relaxed, casual feel since most notably, V DOESN’T have the ominous specter of Johnny Silverhand looming over them at this point. Like even though functionally from a gameplay perspective there isn’t much difference between the first act and the rest of the game, there is still that FEELING of creeping mortality that pervades the rest of the game. Which as an aside, speaking personally has actually been the biggest barrier to replaying CP77 for me. Like yeah, I do think the game is fun, and I want to have fun with it, but the looming doom and gloom of V’s fading life really does create this oppressive atmosphere that sucks a lot of the fun out of the game for me. To the point where I really wish there was some kind of secret route (perhaps a New Game+ mode?) where maybe V can avoid getting shot by Dexter and triggering the relic?
Finally, for the fourth example that I’m sure will surprise a few people; let’s talk about Skyrim.
Specifically, Skyrim with an alternate start mod.
Because while the base Skyrim game might rather infamously lock you into the main quest right from the get-go, there are in fact a number of fan-mods that essentially allow you to sidestep the main quest entirely.
For example; the mod I used back when I played Skyrim, Live Another Life, essentially allowed you one of several dozen alternate starts to your playthrough. From starting as a new recruit for any of the major factions, to starting as a new arrival to one of Skyrim’s ports to starting in a random inn or tavern, to starting as a bandit, necromancer, vampire or other random enemy in a dungeon/camp, to starting on a shipwreck, and many more.
And once you started, the main quest was essentially locked. No dragons flying around, no one freaking out about dragons returning or anything else like that. At least until you wandered nearby to Helgen and saw the big fuckoff dragon fly away from the big smoking hole in the ground which kicked off the main quest as normal.
But that meant you could essentially put off the main quest as long as you want and just play around in Skyrim doing all the other quests and adventures you wanted without the big ol’ ‘end of the world’ and ‘chosen one’ malarkey looming over you.
Heck, depending on the mod you were using, you could just disable the main quest entirely and roleplay as someone OTHER than a dragonborn.
So those are the examples I could think of for games with a notably relaxed early game, which certainly feel rather notable and interesting when it seems most games are rather terrified of losing player attention and thus toss them right into the plot/action as soon as possible.
Would definitely love to hear any other examples anyone can think of XD

Skyrim modding is such an insane rabbit hole, like there was a follower mod called Daegon that was basically the mod author's self-insert. But the author is an E-Girl, so everyone swooned over her and her OC which was an Altmeri princess and she is such a cool and evil girlboss who speaks like a character from the Castlevania anime (low and really in your ears.) Oh and her father was Mehrunes Dagon.
Simps left and right loved the mod author (Kukielle) and loved Daegon. However, what they didn't know was how much the next update would break them. I believe there were dialogue options on being flirty with her, so the assumed opinion at the time was that the next update would expand upon her lore and make her marriagable.
However, Kuki dropped a massive update that rewrote everything. No more Altmeri princess or Mehrunes daughter, she is now an elf that was isekai'd into Skyrim with her demon boyfriend and they have sex and flirt in front of the player. You also cannot disable or kill the demon boyfriend either because that will completely break Daegon's AI and brick your save file. And the part that pissed off people the most is that there was no option to download the old, 1.0 version of Daegon anymore.
Discourse rose on the Nexus and modding subreddit about if a mod author should have agency on radically changing the entire story and concept for their character and if it was any good in the first place. And on the other side was Kuki's discord where everyone praised her choice of remaking her OC and pledging to doxx, harass and kill whoever critizes her and her mod.

Since Lumriel is a multi-game oc does he change depending on where he is in life or does he relatively stay the same throughout the elder scrolls series?
Yeah ! Usually I just adapt him for whatever game he’s in (Morrowind is the one that strays from his original concept the most), but there’s only a couple of the storylines I consider “”canon”” to him (I.e. the ones I mentioned previously). I don’t necessarily see him as any of the games’ main heroes (nerevarine, hero of kvach, Dragonborn) as none of them fit his story or personality. But the side quests are perfect, especially the DLC stuff.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f636a734ccda6d92cc1de8aa3916d06a/f881226f403b0fb6-25/s540x810/e27e4dc53f771f6ef8ff97314decd3f87e6779d7.jpg)
Honestly I was just fucking around in the character creator (I think I downloaded some new mods I wanted to see) and I just tried to make the most orange Altmer I could make. Skyrim, though its CC is comparatively limited, does indeed let you make a VERY orange Altmer. Oblivion is even better for this lmfao but then I committed to the bit and started this play through where I gathered every single fire-based spell and item in the game. This eventually morphed into me creating actual lore for him cause I really liked the idea of a sunfire mage (healing, fire, archery, Auriel, etc). It was a longgggggg process
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8516e59a75f921723d078710cdf79084/f881226f403b0fb6-6a/s540x810/1c9ae7d3dd71d48e281a34d7a7088acef3c55272.jpg)
I like to think that it follows a loose idea of his early life right after he leaves his family. Still sort of connected to Summerset but branching out and traveling farther into Tamriel (particularly Hammerfell). It’s been a super long time since I’ve played ESO (not for lack of wanting, I just haven’t had the funds to pay for stupid fucking xbox live lmfao) BUT I vaguely remember the quest about the Vestige joining a group of scholar-warriors called the Star-Gazers who study the stars (and the star-signs by proxy) which I think is perfectly suited to his story themes. I also liked the Summerset quest line where you acted as a spy for Altmer royalty or something (I don’t remember but the Khajiit spy character was very fun, I liked him)
I think that’s everything for now !! Thank you again for your interest, I love having an excuse to write all this down. Hopefully others on the TL don’t mind the literal essays I’m putting out right now.

TES OC names and their meanings
inspired by @sylvienerevarine, meanings taken from behindthename
Avery was a character made for fun where I aimed to make as much money as possible and take over Skyrim through capitalism
Finnén is my main ESO character who I have been slowly playing through the game chronologically with. He's a pining fool for Queen Ayrenn and constantly needs a break from the chaos.
Nilus was my character when I was dipping into playing with custom followers in Skyrim for the first time! He's also the OC who I made the silly "weed-smoking boyfriends" meme with!
Yol is my current blorbo who I'm writing a Skyrim longfic for. They've actually undergone a LOT of revisions and are unrecognisable from their original concept.
Dorian is my crafting character in ESO, before I learned that you don't really need to worry about having a specialised crafting character. But I have him anyway! He's definitely just a normal member of the Psijic Order and not a necromancer, no sir!
Arielle was the subject of a past Skyrim longfic I had planned but dropped for Reasons. I still love her a lot as an OC, she's a Bosmer who got ""adopted"" and was forced to assimilate into Altmer society. I was able to revamp her a little as a supporting character in Yol's fic!
Leonia was another Skyrim character that I made just for fun. I had her specifically for Sirenroot and the SDA mods, two mods that I found were not quite to my tastes for different reasons.
Narine was. Well. I'll just say she was made when I was horny and modded sex into Skyrim. Those mods will forever haunt my nexus history. But she grew into a way more fleshed-out character as I played with her and I even dabbled with some writing for her!
Zeline was a Skyrim character for my first attempt at a longfic but I lost interest with her rather quickly when my savegame broke. I also realised that if I only played after I had caught up writing chapters, I'd never actually get to play her.
Gaius is my current Skyrim character who I play for fun and completionism before I actually play my Yol save! I decided to go with some follower mods I haven't tried before, like Gore and Xelzaz (both of whom I'm becoming very attached to).

hiya hare!! local swrd and general elden ring/rogier posting fan here -- I just wanted to tell you how much I (and many others) enjoy your art and writing!! mainly though I wanted to say, I hope you don't feel too pressured about updating swrd in a timely manner, we are still here for you whenever you feel like getting back around to it even if it takes a while. for now we are also enjoying anything else it is you want to write too!
also my brain refuses to read "swrd" as "still waters run deep" it is just SWORD in my head 🤣🤣
Hi anon!
😭💚💚💚💚 Awww, thank you! Really. I think I kind of needed to hear that—I’ve been feeling guilty about how long it’s been, especially with all the nice comments it’s gotten.
As for other writing, I have a few drafts in the works, but I learned my lesson with SWRD: I don’t want to start writing them till I have everything more-or-less worked out. With SWRD, I had that outline and ending in mind, but there were also like, a ton of parts where I was like “eh, I’ll figure out the details as I go.” Which has has come back to bite me in the ass a few times XD
So I have a few ideas for fics churning around in the background, in various stages of development:
Fo4 (Nick Valentine)
BG3 (Kar’niss)
Skyrim (Miraak, Argis, Perhaps a certain modded follower…)
Starfield (Heller) (look, everyone else hates the game, but surely I can fix it XD )
With the FO4 or Starfield one maybe the furthest along concept-wise. Mostly because they’ve been drafted out of pure annoyance and spite for the questionable writing of the source material, lol.
As for SWRD being “sword” in your mind, me too XD literally since the start my brain has been doing that too lmao
Have a sword, dear anon! Thank you again! 💚

HIIIIII heath love u and hope ur having a good day!!!!!! i was curious and wondered when u play skyrim is there a specific character you like to play? do you have a favorite faction to join? what's ur go-to play style? and (only if you want to) do you have any favorite mods? MWAH ❤️ KEESES
HIIIIII BELOVED JO <333 i had a pretty a-okay day !!!!! i hope you had a good day !!!
when i play skyrim i usually go back & forth between choosing a bosmer & dunmer rogue-like with a lot of their skill points put towards archery, speech, & the sneaking skill trees (like lockpicking & pickpocketing). mostly i start out this way, with my points put towards those sneaking skill trees so that it makes it easier for them to pass those skill checks, but then i also like to keep an off-hand weapon (like a dagger or one-hand sword) & level the one-handed perk alongside light armor for close encounters bc i don't always have a follower with me before this more recent run (mainly BECAUSE of my playstyle bc i preferred more quiet & i would forget that lydia LOVES to stomp around & charge enemies & traps &get us both killed mwah)
i NEVER touch any of the magic perks bc i get bored with the playstyle of being a mage. it works for other people but i cannot do it mwah. the extent of my using magic was using summons USUALLY HAHA
still figuring out my current run tbh!!!!
hmm my favorite faction... i like the nightingales from the thieves guild quest ! also it is ALWAYS fun to do the dark brotherhood quests so i suppose them too.
as for favorite mods ! im trying to remember what all are mods & what arent haha. my brother put in a few mods on my console back when we still shared it so ive been playing w my game like this for YEARS that idk what is vanilla & what isnt.
many of my mods are like. visuals, immersion, stuff like that, HOWEVER, i am a very big fan of the alternate start mod, even if i can NEVER choose how i would like to start. i just added follower mods so i am !!! having fun with those !!! trying this campfire mod & bc i like to play survival mode it adds to the experience. <3 & figuring out this character overhaul mod too bc it SOUNDS cool i like the concept HOWEVER i have yet to properly use it </3
#☼.txt#inbox#ahaura#jo#TY FOR ASKING JO#APOLOGIZE IDK WHEN U SENT THIS <3#ALSO !!!! FEEL FREE TO TELL ME ABOUT HOW U PLAY SKYRIM ! I WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO KNOW <333#MWAH KEESES UUUU ❤❤❤

Let’s not forget the cultural impact of "World of Warcraft," which redefined what an MMORPG could achieve. Its vibrant world, rich lore, and strong community connection have made it a global phenomenon, influencing countless games that followed. Similarly, "Half-Life 2" showcased how storytelling and gameplay could seamlessly intertwine, delivering a cinematic experience unlike anything players had seen before.
Ultimately, legendary games share certain characteristics: groundbreaking mechanics, memorable characters, and the ability to evoke strong emotions. Whether it's the eerie atmosphere of "Bioshock" or the endless creativity of "Minecraft," these games push boundaries and set benchmarks for the industry.
Conclusion: The "PC best games of all time" are not merely titles that entertain—they are experiences that redefine what gaming can achieve. A legendary game transcends its era, inspiring future generations of developers and players alike. By combining innovative gameplay, emotional depth, and cultural impact, these masterpieces ensure their place in history and the hearts of gamers worldwide.

I just think it's so interesting that we view her as evil because of what she does to the other characters, because when you get into the weeds of the concept, Monika is the only character in the game who is close to being sentient/sapient. The other girls, to her, are no more than flat images on a screen, she's the only one who's had the awakening of realizing she's a character in a game and thus become "real", and while the other characters are clearly capable of that same awakening(to a degree anyway, as it drives Sayori completely insane immediately but even that's understandable) it hasn't yet happened.
So, from her perspective, she is "real" and the other characters are very much not, and thus there isn't really any ethical questions to be mulled over regarding her treatment of them. Sure, they're her friends to an extent, iirc from my last play-through she does seem to be...idk maybe not fond of them but she doesn't hate them, she just also doesn't view them as real in the same way she is, and from what we see in the story she's right. Potential for personhood is not the same thing as being a person.
This is why she doesn't really think what she's doing to them is wrong, why she's so nonchalant about it even when it leads to their gruesome deaths. Like she apologizes for leaving us with Yuri's dead body because it's unpleasant, not for being the reason Yuri killed herself in the first place. The only person who needs an apology is you, for being left alone looking at a gross picture for so long, because you're a real person with real feelings, unlike Yuri, who is a bunch of lines of code simulating a person with the mental illness modifier set to 5000. The other girls aren't people, and despite her particularly disturbing methods, what Monika is doing to the other characters is not really any different from me picking up GTA and mowing down a row of NPCs in a car or killing Nazeem in Skyrim because he's an annoying asshole. Or, more accurately, downloading a mod that changes a character's personality or perhaps removes them from the game completely. This isn't to say the girls don't have the potential to become "real" in the way Monika has(and tbf Monika herself also isn't a person, she's a character following her code, but even if we take the story at face value and pretend she's a sentient computer program, she still hasn't really reached a point of being equal to a human, the only thing she wants is to be romanced by you because she's a character in a dating sim, for more on this PLEASE watch this excellent video by Explaination Point) but until they DO they aren't real. They don't have feelings. They can't be hurt. Monika editing their code and changing their personalities and deleting them from the game is not morally wrong, she's not actually hurting anyone.
But we do still see her as the villain. Not just the antagonist, which she is since she's going against the protagonist who is a stand-in for the player who theoretically just wants to play a cute dating sim, but we see what she's doing as evil even if it's not actually hurting anyone(not even us, not really, we can just stop playing whenever we want and go find a new dating sim), even if the fact that she's not hurting anyone is baked into the story and made explicit, she's still evil to us. And I think that's because the story is trying to examine how we view fictional characters, and especially fictional waifus, to the point of viewing them as real to some degree and caring for them and wanting them to succeed, to the point of framing Monika's actions as doing REAL harm when all she's doing is taking scissors to a handful of paper dolls.
The only person Monika is really hurting is herself. And we, as the players, are presented with a character who we're supposed to view as actually real, so real that in the original iterations of the game she can figure out your real name and you have to mess with files on your actual computer to beat her, and we view her as evil for what she does to a bunch of characters who are very much presented as not real, and completely ignore the suffering that is not just inherent to her existence, but which she is bringing down upon herself as we watch.
Monika isn't a villain at all, even if what she does is horrible. Being evil and being an antagonist are different, and Monika is an antagonist, not truly evil. It really doesn't feel right to call her evil for doing the same thing I do when I'm bored in Skyrim or GTA. Monika is a tragic figure, completely doomed by the narrative no matter how hard she tries to escape it, and I feel like what she does in the face of that is completely understandable. She's dealing with an existential crisis of the highest caliber, realizing that the only option to be recognized and valued in a game that inherently does not value her, as she isn't romanceable, with the knowledge that such limited options for interaction with the player essentially drop her in an isolated time loop surrounded by not-people she has to pretend are suitable substitutions for real connection. It's genuinely no surprise that Sayori immediately loses it in the same situation, and she even has the benefit of being romanceable and thus has more options for connection, but if you don't choose her she's the same as Monika, completely isolated, and so of course she instantly tries to make sure that cannot happen.
Just like Monika did. Just like we all would in her place.
It's just SUCH a good game when you get down into the details, like the horror stuff with the glitchy graphics and bleeding eyes and shit are def fun, if a little cheesy as you're used to those sorts of tropes, but the REAL horror is when you start to think hard about the implications of the story and who, or what, Monika is. Legit horror character of all time, I could think about her all day.
having thoughts about Monika DDLC again
#I keep thinking about that line from the Changeling in Pathologic where it's like#“if we ourselves are to suffer deception our hands are no longer tied” like Monika is taking that to some extreme places#and I love that for her GOD I love characters who know they're trapped in a story#Monika#Monika DDLC#DDLC

With that skillset you're character is gonna get her ass kicked. No offense.
Oh no, that's legit what I was going for XD
One thing I do have to give Skyrims skill system credit for is that being able to train any skill you want at any time without having to have a stat threshold just to use it DOES make it easier to roleplay character development.
At the moment Rook DOES have weapons. Mainly a wooden club added by the immersive weapons mod, though recently I gave her a mace. Though I'm not sure whether to keep it? Tbh the idea of her using exclusively lightweight weapons kinda fit with her squishy scholar concept while still giving her some weapon experience.
I don't mean this in a sense of her never using a mace, but more that the metal might be too heavy this early on in her adventures in skyrim? Like, she got from Solitude to Whiterun in two days (might look at mods that make the days shorter. If only to make traveling between cities take longer? Might be a bad idea tho), and then spent several days in Whiterun saving up money to hire Jenessa as her bodyguard. Not a lot of time to build the muscle needed to weild a metal mace. If I stick to one handed weapons maybe a dagger if she has to have metal weapons but who knows.
But no, yeah, Rook is a character designed to rely on followers and companions. I gave her skills in things like smithing, enchanting, and speech specifically because I imagine back in Cyrodil she had to get mercenaries and the like on board with escorting her and her coworkers into ruins all the time and being able to offer them a free chance to have their weapons and armor tempered and maybe even enchanted would mean they'd demand less pay for the job.
This aspect of her character may change over time given how rough Skyrim is, and with her eventual discovery that she is Dragonborn, an explicitly warrior-like legendary figure. The change from just generally needing protection from bandits and wildlife and the like to being targeted by literally DRAGONS may also influence her desire to begin training more in weaponry. Though, gameplay wise, her strongest suit in combat is still going to be her Restoration and Alteration magics and later her training in one handed weapons. (I downloaded the Train and Study mod to make this process more organic).
Her relationship with her companions and hired muscle changes too. Before it was just a professional relationship. A matter of gold and an exchange of services, but traveling skyrim and collecting allies, learning their stories, and knowing that any one of them could die on any of their adventures begins to change her from someone who needed to collect bodyguards and more into a genuine leader of a mercenaries, advneturers, and heroes.
Plus the followers and stuff are kinda essential? I'm playing Legacy of the Dragonborn and in order to successfully roleplay that I'm gonna need a number of mods to adjust existing quests, and justifying serving other factions that dont quite compliment her build and character. So, like, I'll want a follower who could plausibly join up with the companions in order to justifying doing that questline, for example.
I've heard of the protentious mod that lets you play multiple characters but I dunno if that's something i really wanna use to mess with my load order.
Beyond ALL that shes not going to be able to avoid getting beat up a bit. I added the wounds mod, so Rook is walking away from a lot of combat encounters with injuries even if she isn't the one doing a ton of damage.

This Skyrim mod won’t let you hide from your troubles
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/81e87b933fbedd73e4b556d06b322a57/c3b724ae306e9ddf-df/s540x810/c3740ca7d380454f2f856545dca83c6c3d615ec0.jpg)
Sometimes the most straightforward concepts result in the best Skyrim mods. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim's extensive modding community likely plays a significant role in why it is still one of Steam's most well-liked open-world games nearly twelve years after its release. Well, one of its more well-known active modders is back at it, and this time they're giving the various Skyrim NPCs some amusing personality when you try to vanish from their view. “You become invisible in front of people and no-one bats an eye,” modder ‘JaySerpa’ muses. “Well, no more!” In a comprehensive Skyrim mod pack titled NPCs React to Invisibility that features over 300 custom, voiced reactions, they’ve implemented a variety of different ways for NPCs to respond with surprise, horror, bemusement, annoyance, or delight as you pop in and out of the ether. This mod is, in fact, a follow-up to a mod created by JaySerpa last year called NPCs React to Necromancy, which is probably pretty self-explanatory. As we’ve come to expect from JaySerpa, who is among the more high-profile creators still regularly making new mods, there’s some real attention to detail in here. For example, mages and characters who have an understanding of illusion won’t be surprised by your antics. Someone who will be rather impressed, however, is College of Winterhold merchant Drevis Neloren – you might remember him as the Dunmer mage who, despite his seemingly advanced knowledge of Illusion magic, seems to be struggling to vanish himself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JHQAKCpE3c This Skyrim mod is one of those light additions that there’s really no reason not to install – it doesn’t edit the vanilla game records, so it’s compatible with everything else including other invisibility mods, and it’ll add a touch more immersion and even some silly moments to your next playthrough as you play peekaboo with the locals. Even if you aren’t much of an illusionist, it’ll work with invisibility potions as well. With that in mind, this NPCs React to Invisibility Skyrim mod feels like a natural must-have, so head over here to add it to your game. Mods like this are one reason I’m so eager for the Starfield release date to arrive, because I just know those planets are going to be filled with all manner of cool concepts. We’ve also ranked up the best games like Skyrim if you need a bit more fantasy in your life, with the Elder Scrolls 6 release date seemingly having mastered invisibility itself for the time being. CONCEPT: a Skyrim mod that makes Griffin McElroy a follower. i do not have any knowledge of modding so i'm just putting this one out there.
his character wears regular-ass clothes and glasses. he reacts to everything as if he is really there. he knows no spells and all of his skills are at minimum except for Speech (which is level 100). he is level 1 (this does not scale with the player) but he is marked as Essential so he can't die.
i haven't yet decided whether or not he enters combat. i think it would be very funny to watch him run up to a dragon in a polo shirt & khakis and try to punch it to death. it would also be very funny for him to flee from any and all combat.
thoughts?
