LAIKA: Frame x Frame Now Open!

August has been quite the busy month both for us archivists (moves, vacations, etc) and the whole Laika community! In addition to new glimpses at Wildwood, the closure of Hidden Worlds at the Museum of Pop Culture after 17 months and the 15th anniversary remastered rerelease of Coraline, LAIKA: Frame x Frame is now open at BFI Southbank!

The exhibit seems to have first opened for Empire VIP Club members on Sunday, August 10th alongside a premiere screening of the Coraline 15th anniversary remaster. For this premiere, Henry Selick and Teri Hatcher were in attendance with both speaking about the film. 

Unfortunately, comprehensive documentation on this exhibit is proving hard to find and neither of our two person team is able to make it to London. 🚨 NEW EXHIBIT 🚨

Good news, UK and Europe LAIKAns! 

The British Film Institute has recently announced a new, free LAIKA exhibit titled LAIKA: Frame x Frame. LAIKA: Frame x Frame will run at BFI Southbank from August 12 to October 1, 2024 in tandem with a stop motion film series. 

This exhibit will feature over 700 artifacts with some “never before seen in public” (VERY interesting), new life-size recreations and an interactive element involving cabinets and drawers. From the descriptions, it seems different from any other exhibition or display LAIKA has ever done and we are all very curious to see photos of it (our team is entirely North America based and broke, unfortunately).

It will also feature a look at Wildwood. The press release also mentions a 2025 release, though we still do not have a date. 

LAIKA-linked special guests include Henry Selick, Chris Butler, Sam Fell and “further to be announced”. For any LAIKAns attending this exhibit on dates where there will be panels, please kindly consider filming this event if permitted. Any media/documentation of any kind of this exhibit, once open, would be GREATLY appreciated by our team. Please feel free to submit any photo, video, and/or audio to laikaarchivists@gmail.com.
